I see a lot of posts expressing frustration with the fanon idea that certain highly competent characters (yes, this post is about Obi-Wan, but I've seen others) can't take care of themselves and need others to bully them into eating, sleeping, etc.. While I totally get that frustration, I personally very much enjoy that trope. I've been trying to dissect why I enjoyed it since I saw those critiques, and I think I finally managed to put it to words.
(Disclaimer: I live in the United States, so my discussion about healthcare is operating in the framework of the man-eating trash fire that is the American healthcare system.)
I am a busy person outside of fandom. I recently completed a cross-country move. I'm damn good at my job and I love what I do, but it's hard work and a lot of it is on call. I have bills to pay. I have paperwork to fill out. I have messages to send and more messages to reply to. I have a life that is full of things I don't want to do. We all do. It's part of existing in society.
I am also chronically ill.
We live in a system that is actively hostile to putting your own health first. The healthcare system is impossible to navigate even if you are feeling the very pinnacle of health and wellbeing, and good fucking luck trying to do so when you're sick. Good luck trying to go to work and pay your bills and fill your tank. Good luck trying to do your paperwork and cook your meals and clean your apartment. Good luck trying to muster up the energy to respond to the well-meaning communications of friends and family.
But here's the thing- you still have to.
The rest of the world doesn't stop when you're sick. The rest of your life doesn't pause when you need it to. Sometimes you have to sacrifice sleep to make it to a doctor's appointment, or skip breakfast to make it to work on time. Every one of us, to some extent or another, has had to sacrifice what would be best for our health in order to stay functional in this fucked-up, capitalistic, carnivorous society.
So I think my preference for reading and writing fics like the ones I mentioned at the beginning has a certain level of wish fulfillment to it. Someone who is competent and good at their job and has an extraordinary level of responsibility on their shoulders sacrifices their own well-being to keep the rest of the world going-
And someone else makes sure they eat. Someone else makes sure their health gets tended to. Someone else makes sure they sleep, and that the world doesn't fall apart while they do so.
A lot of times, we don't get to make those decisions, or we feel guilty when we do. In reading fics like these, I feel like I get to outsource those decisions- outsourcing self-care, if you will. You don't have to feel guilty about putting your own health first, because you're not making the choice to do so. Someone else is.
It's okay. Get some rest.

I found a youtube channel that does videos about phobias which I find great since that's been one of my special interests for years, however I don't think people realise how AWFUL of an idea it is to put images that can trigger said phobia in the very thumbnail and throughout the entire video.
Like. I get why people do this but for example imagine having astrophobia. You look up astrophobia and want to watch a video talking about it only to be completely unable to learn about your own phobia because It's plastered all over the video. If you didn't already get triggered by the thumbnail.
At least if you're gonna do that, use an unrealistic/drawn image or something alluding to it (eg a teloscope). Not Real Life Space Images. I cannot underestimate how often this happens and how frustrating it is.

*appears with a mic* thoughts on smalletho?
Smalletho was my POV for Double Life and their dynamic was fantastic with Joel being a malewife like he always is and Etho indulging Joel’s craziness at his own expense. I loved how they both would like take damage on purpose to annoy each other. I feel like they really did balance each other out. They’re both dumbasses in the best way. Also them mentioning being allies in the last season in Limited Life was great. Love the crumbs.
Now I don’t post or reblog ship content on this blog BUT I do see a lot of it and I gotta say it’s pretty good. The shippers know what’s up.
Overall, I like em :)

Eight is more than just a sword. He's a test of conviction for all those who want to change the world. He sees if you are worthy of sacrifice and change. He asks if you are willing to trade lives for the sake of ideals, and how far you are willing to go for them. He measures your life and your death, the strength of your beliefs against your belief in them; a proverbial sword in the stone. "A woman once taught me that the most important mission I would have... would be testing the hearts of others. If you cannot abide by the world you wish to create, I will stand against you.
If your ideals can stand against the world, there is nothing my sword will not cut for you."
In essence, he does this by offering himself as the first tool to be used for another's ideals. If those ideals turn out to be flawed and weak, the battles he fights under such a banner will make it evident. Yet it is not his place to judge; only to measure the strength of a person's character, the test of the steel in their soul.

ive gotta say i love how they handled sams and henrys death in the show
he had to die, they could change whatever they wanted but there was no way he could survive bc his death is so deeply tied to ellies survivors guilt. she survived and he didnt she had to watch him, watch tess, watch riley all die from something she survived and it helps fuel her desire to be the cure bc she can stop this. and if sam dies then henry dies bc he was willing to burn the world if it meant sam could live, and loosing his brother (especially by his own hand) put him in a very dangerous state of mind
but by having ellie aware of what happened to sam, having her show that shes infected and use the knowledge that shes the cure, means that (in her mind) shes the reason he died. riley died bc she was trying to make it up to ellie after their fight, tess died bc of trying to get her to the fireflies and helping her escape the hoard, and now sam died bc she failed to save him. she could have, shes the cure, the thing that will fix the world, but she failed and not only did she get him killed but henry died bc of her too
her desire to find the fireflies and her survivors guilt is going to be so strong that i can practically feel the anger that shes gonna have at the end

my absolute favorite thing is how nate and hugh are both very particular different brands of sunshine and everything sgsdhf nate is the reluctant hero who just wanted to help his friend (crush) & then help everyone else & help the pokemon (and gets compared to The Hero hilbert all the time along the way) while hugh is a thunderstorm fiercely protective and caring with a bit of anger issues but so thankful for his friend (obliviously crush) & the mutual care and support and pushing each other to keep getting stronger
they are each other’s sunshine through the storm
(or as I put it less eloquently on twt:
fgdfsdfh I have so many feels, the old ones resurfacing with an added fresh pov on it after all these years)
