Star Trek Picard 3x04 thots
time for thots again
k so if you're new to my thots on star trek you probably should know that while I love picard as a character it is because he's an arrogant asshole who gets away with too much and deserves to be taken down a peg. Its one of the many, many reasons Sisko is my favourite captain, is that Sisko hates Picard for killing his wife and ruining his life. I like the idea that Picard is a hugely divisive figure in Starfleet and across the Federation because of what happened at Wolf 359 but more importantly, what happened afterwards. I think if the show had been a bit less chaotic that would have been the prestige tv to end all prestige tv, i.e. addressing the complex legacy of Picard the man.
anyway all this ties into my feelings that Shaw is right and should say it. Shaw's story of how he survived Wolf 359 was wonderfully affecting especially countering Picard's personal brand of mythmaking, i.e. he is still a man who cannot deal with not being the hero. Which is exactly what I WANT from my star trek. Picard believes one thing about himself, that he is a humble starfleet captain man who has never done anything wrong in his entire life, who isn't a showboater or a storyteller, while being the exact opposite: he should know that fish and chips shouldn't be eaten cold, yet he abandons his lunch to show off to a bunch of cadets. Was this once? Or was it a frequent occurence?
The twist in the tail that Picard's arrogance and showboating cost him the relationship with his son felt a bit lost, but that might have been on me losing focus. I liked and sympathised with Jack, who would have been, what, 18? Going to go make a great declaration, tracking down his biological father on the encouragement of his mother, and being accidentally cruelly rebuked as irrelevant. And then five years later trying to make a good thing of it, asking about hair loss etc, and picard just showing that he's way too self-involved to actually be able to relate.
Its a pity there's not going to be any real emotional fallout, or even Picard learning a lesson in his old age, because the show, after four episodes of doing a Not Bullshit Plot, has decided to bring in some Bullshit in the last few minutes. Jack is having visions!!!! Son of Picard is SPECIAL!!! Why do the changelings want him...and why did they know that the Titan was going to pick him up?? Either changelings are all through the federation (as implied in one ds9 episode, where a changeling tells Odo that there are dozens if not hundreds of sleeper agents throughout the federation who are never mentioned again), or what, Beverly is a changeling? I think it might be the sleeper agents leftover from the dominion war, but that is one hell of a story to pick up if so.
Idly, I wonder if they've ever asked Ira Steven Behr if he wants to come back and do a legacy show? Not that I necessarily want ds9 season 8, but I do find it odd that they've got none of the original writers back in for these last hurrahs with old writers (not since Bryan Fuller kicked it all off with the original concept for Disco, anyway). Today's episode was fine, but again it felt like a remix of some older episodes. I was sort of excited that maybe the nebula would be that Super Changeling that was mentioned in the beta novels (drink), which dies and basically fractures the link, but thats always too much to hope for. Still, space babies.
Anyway, another thot I had this week was that they have totally fucked up the casting of Jack, since he looks 33, not 23, and TNG onward casting was always to cast younger not older. Its like someone got confused, though I can't fault them, he looks so much like a baby patstew it really was a gift.

oh seven my seven. excited for her and Raffi to be reunited maybe, not that there's going to be any space for them to be happy.
it was lovely to have a star trek breakfast, however I did sort of ruin it by not getting up til midday.

btw I think it's strongly implied by Disco 3x04 "Forget Me Not" that the joining between Adira and Tal was only successful because Tal carried Gray's memories, and especially Gray's memories of being in love with and caring for Adira. The Tal symbiont was very, very invested in making sure that Adira didn't die, and I think it expressed every drop of agency it had in order to keep Adira alive, albeit with the side-effect of causing them amnesia.
I think Adira Tal's circumstances are unprecedented even beyond the fact that they're human; I doubt a symbiont was ever transferred from one person involved in a relationship as close as the one Adira and Gray shared, to the other before. And even as tragic as it is, I think it's basically the reason why Adira is able to be joined.
(Yes I realize this is basically ~the power of love~ but honestly what the Trill have going on with their symbionts is pretty much magic so like. I really don't mind this explanation at all)

Hot Jola take incoming, girls, gays, and theys.
So, much has been made of how Keyla is jumproping in the opening scene of 3x04, as it should be. From a lens of Jola analysis, it probably represents Joann's POV as she watches Keyla, while Hugh scans both of them with a tricorder. I didn't go to film school, but the idea that the camera shows what different characters see doesn't seem like a far reach.
My computer refuses to screencap these days, so I'm borrowing from @igetalongwithoutyouverywell (whose @ I think is an A+ Hozier reference?) and their well of screencaps. Here we go.
First we have Keyla jumping rope in the gym, staring straight ahead, as our establishing shot for this bit.
Then they hit the slo-mo (indicated by how fast Culber's hand moves), for Joann watching Keyla, and then Keyla jumping in slo-mo.
Then it cuts back to Culber, and the scene carries on.
Now, because we here at FYJ had two brain cells to knock together, we took this slo-mo to be Joann absolutely lost in the sauce looking at Keyla. People read the look on Joann's face to be concern, or potentially Thirst, and both of those are valid reads, provided they also nail the "gay" element.
But what just jumped out at me was the lighting. Let's compare how Joann is lit (by the huge yellow light source on her left) versus when she turns back to Hugh after watching Keyla.
Besides the slo-mo effect, which disappears when we're presumably back to Hugh's POV in the second shot, Joann is super well lit in the first one, and seems more tired and out of breath by the dim lighting in the second.
(We should also take a moment to credit Hanelle Culpepper, the director of this episode and noted total pro at making black women stand out on camera. Oladejo's skin tone sometimes gets over-darkened and dulled on Disco, but Culpepper totally brought her A game on this one and made her look great.)
What stood out to me about this change is the perspectives- slo-mo Keyla, from Joann's view, is unfocused and lost, but it focuses on her face. Joann from Hugh's view is weary. So what about Joann while she's looking at Keyla? It's nearly adoring.
(Again, because we could all use a little more Joann Owosekun in our lives.)
Joann is in focus, watching Keyla, while Hugh and the tricorder are blurred.
Therefore, I propose that here we see Joann from Keyla's point of view- gorgeous and concerned, as she is for much of this episode. The lighting design and camera effects team up to make this little bit of the intro even more sapphic. I'm impressed.

What is Oswald's best look from Gotham?
god what a question thank u for asking
possibly controversial: i don’t miss the emo/disco vampire hair that much, and i loved his hair throughout most of 4a (it did start to get obnoxiously tall. oswald is a fashionable man, i can’t believe the writers really thought he’d go for the cockatiel aesthetic.)
let’s get this out of the way. above. best look on the show, by such a wide margin that i don’t think it’s fair to compare it to anything else. it massacred every other look every other character on the show has tried, except for maybe barbara’s floor-length white fur coat in s3. so i’m including some honorable mentions under the cut, bc he is so often and effortlessly iconic.
the blue stripes, the roguish bandana, the fact that his gloves and cravat are green. noice.
i mentioned that i loved his 4a luks, and it’s true. especially this one, with the leather buckled sleeve garters? also peak distinguished gay villain hair. ed was on his way to being this skilled, but he went and shot oswald before the apprentice could become the master. so now edward is cursed to wander gotham in a bright green suit that’s 2 sizes too big for him. a cautionary tale. my goth hero!

After 3x04: Equilibrium, once Joran Belar’s memories have been reincorporated into Jadzia’s consciousness, she will occasionally stop to serenade people on the promenade - badly and with intent to embarrass. Quark books her at the bar during a slow week but vows never to do so again after she plays Trill disco hits the entire time.

DISCO 3x04
Come one come all for my weekly disco feels, bought to you by this week’s sponsor, terrible kelpien food!
I didn’t vibe with this episode, as the kids say. I’m going to try and unpack exactly why.
It was the most next gen episode we’ve ever had in this show, which is good. It had an A and B plot, a dictated log!, it had callbacks to ds9, the symbiont wasn’t Dax, which helped, there was the cute kids in love plotline. I generally like the Trill, mostly because of this one fic that is my favourite ds9 fic which does both immortal love story ezri/lenara, trill revolution over all the stuff that happened with the Dax symbiont and Joran, while also being hilarious and enormous and wonderful and you should read it. (don’t worry though if you’ve got ‘being smug about all those reboot novels she read’ on your cicak disco reflection post bingo card, that is coming.)
We had what I’ve been clamoring for, which is the shock of the loss finally hitting home and the crew falling apart a bit. We’ve got the aftermath of whatever happened to Keyla in the crash. We’ve got indications that Saru is very new in his captain’s journey and is going to have problems. There are indications that Michael has changed in the last year in ways that no one but her has any ideas about.
And yet.
Maybe I was just in a mood, a mood caused by lockdown and by work and by the US election and by everything else, but the whole episode felt as undercooked as Saru’s weird kelpien feast. The senior staff dinner should have gone on longer, it should have been given more time to breathe, to descend into sniping and discomfort and then blow up, but that would also require these characters to have been given screen time to develop personalities. Don’t get me wrong, I am so so glad we are getting personalities, but what I would like now is for us to see Culber and Detmer have their weekly counselling sessions. To use that to explore the crew dynamics we haven’t really had. The AB plot structure works well for developing characters over time, it served star trek well for 700 episodes, and they should use it more.
There were other things I didn’t like in the episode, the abruptly hostile Trill society made up of 10 people, that sort of implied that there’s been a reversal from the 2400s and there are now more symbionts than hosts, but still had reverence for symbionts...but then both tried to murder Adira and exile the symbiont, idk. (Obligatory ds9 reboot novel plot snip, they promise to spend a couple of generations not hosting symbionts after there was almost a civil war over allocation of resources/symbionts)
Saru also holds the idiot ball about the computer changing to giving him flirty bad advice, which after the control storyline is absolute bullshit and he would and should be extremely worried that the ship is developing a personality, just because the audience is supposed to remember Calypso doesn’t mean they necessarily will (then again I skipped the recap so it was probably mentioned there), and also SARU WASN’T THERE, HE SHOULD BE HAVING WHOEVER IS IN CHARGE OF COMPUTERS RESTORE FROM BACKUP WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE.
(Also Saru calling Stamets Dr Stamets instead of Commander Stamets really really threw me and I don’t know WHY, same as I don’t know WHY someone gave Georgiou a commission and I know these are probably just slips but there are only FOURTEEN EPISODES you can’t AFFORD it.)
Perhaps I will be in a better mood later, after all, I hated an obol for charon and liked it when I rewatched it a year later, but for now, this is my on-the-day thoughts. To think, I missed destiel becoming canon and tumblr melting down so I could avoid spoilers.
