It means giving those disabled/chronically ill characters the same respect as the abled characters get - giving them well thought out backstories - not just a token disabled person used as inspiration porn. I'd love for disabled people to be consulted while creating these characters so they are as acturate as possible without being an ableist mockery of what ableds think disabled people do/think/act like. We are just as wonderfully complex as ableds and just as deserving of air time and respect. We came so close when Marvel gave us Bucky Barnes - but then the ableist character of Rocket was introduced & made jokes about stealing limbs from other disabled characters - reinforcing the idea that disabled people are less than & it's ok to bully them. I'd love to see more complex, well thought out Disabled/Chronically Ill characters in our entertainment industry, but for it to be true representation, those characters should be played by disabled actors. Slowly, with shows like "Run" and "Sex Education", we are getting the representation we deserve.
