I was able to get out of bed a little that day to put on some makeup and take a quick photo. The terrific thing about the dresses I've been wearing lately is that I can wear them in bed. Any adaptable fashion I find is a humongous victory in my book, and it significantly improves my self-image. 👩🏽‍🦽🌈✨

Due to the enormous suckitude of ableism my best friend and I would like to start a consulting firm focusing on accessibility design in infrastructure.

I’d love to hear people’s opinions, design frustrations and ideas.

Pros:

We’re both women with physical disabilities.

She’s in a powered chair.

I have arthritis, occasionally use a crutch and am trying to fight my medical aid for a rollator. Due to the nature of autoimmune arthritis I also have chronic fatigue.

Pros:

It looks like we would be the only company in my city and province doing this.

And possibly the only company in the country that’s actually run by disabled people. (None of the other places’ websites mention it).

Our country has terrible accessible infrastructure (public and private).

Our constitution clearly states a right to freedom from discrimination based on disability/health.

We also have a constitutional right to dignity.

Cons:

Neither of us know anything about consulting.

The legal guidelines on accessibility are quite vague.

My background is in aviation and I’m studying engineering but I have no experience with construction.

And my friend is a journalist, radio and tv newscaster and motivational speaker.

Help?

Wheelchairs are aids, not prisons. Mobility aids are an inherently positive addition to many people’s lives, they offer more freedom, a chance at better pacing and less pain, and I’m proud to use them.

I once had a friend who invited me out to a film. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ My mind started to race. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I started wondering if it was possible if I could even go?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ At first I didn’t voice my insecurities out loud because I didn’t want to be a bother. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I just silently circulated thoughts in my head about all of the accommodations I would have to ask for in order to make this outing happen. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I started getting overwhelmed. I thought about saying no. It’s just going to be too hard. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’m going to have to ask the location if they can accommodate people using mobility aids (I didn’t identify as Disabled at the time). ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’m going to have to be seen in public with a mobility aid and I haven’t done that before - what if someone I know approaches me and asks me what happened to me? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Will the washrooms be accessible? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Will I be able to reserve a seat on the end of a row so I don’t have to sit in the middle? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I finally voiced my fears out loud to my friend, and she said - “oh it’s okay I’ve already taken care of it and phoned the theater to make sure we would be accommodated.” ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Like it wasn’t even a thing for them. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Relief washed over me. My mind was calm. I could breathe again. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I had never had anyone think about my accessibility needs before having to even tell them. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Make sure accessibility is a priority before inviting your Disabled friends & family anywhere. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Make it easy for us to just say yes because we know you’ve got it covered. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If a place says they’re not accessible? Tell them why they should be. Then find an accessible location that will accommodate your friends needs. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This is how we are all included. Honestly I can handle my disability most days. I've lived with it for a long time and I am used to it. But some days... When it puts me and/or my daughter at risk because of my falls... I am terrified. I am terrified to be living in a body that I can't count on. I am terrified to be living in a body that my daughter can't count on. And I am terrified of living in a world that I can't count on to take care of me.
