For the first time in Israel, a revolutionary pacemaker was successfully implanted in Shahad, an 18-year-old from Gaza, at Wolfson Medical Center in Holon, Israel.
Using innovative methods, the pacemaker with a battery life lasting at least two decades, was inserted via catheterization through the patient's neck and placed on the heart, eliminating the need for surgical incisions or any resulting scarring.
This amazing procedure was done thanks to the efforts of Save A Child鈥檚 Heart鈥攁n Israeli humanitarian organization dedicated to saving children's lives.

Ok so the pacemaker tag is devoid of young people with pacemakers, so let鈥檚 aim to change that!
I have a pacemaker myself and it鈥檚 so hard to meet people who also have one and aren鈥檛 super old, BUT I KNOW YOU EXIST

You can also choose to donate your pacemaker to animals in need -- but you need to put that in your advanced care directive and make sure people know your wishes. 馃挋馃

Cyborgs count as beep boops. Motoko Kusanagi is a beep boop. Luke Skywalker is a beep boop. Miles "Nine" Prower is a beep boop. Your grandma with a pacemaker is a beep boop

I don't even care that only a handful of bots will see this, I need to rant.
So. Tony Stark.
One of my favorite MCU characters (it's a tie between him, Peter Parker, and Thor) and the reason he's my favorite is probably a lot different than most people's. I have a heart condition. Tony is one of the only fictional characters I know of who has a heart condition, and beyond that, he is the ONLY one I've ever seen who's a main character. He's a goddamn superhero, and to a little kid with a pacemaker, he was the coolest person ever. And yet, nobody recognizes this. The movies only talk about his condition a handful of times, the most in Iron Man 1 when the condition developed, then scattered throughout the other films as a joke or a quip, and then they just straight up un-disabled him in Iron Man 3.
I just wish someone would acknowledge it. Tony Stark is disabled. They could have done so much more with his character if they had actually chosen to explore his mindset after suddenly obtaining a goddamn heart condition, because I KNOW he would have had some fun complicated feelings about it.
They even could have used it for neat superhero stuff! People with pacemakers (a little machine in one's body that regulates their heart rate) can't be near strong magnets because it can fuck with our settings. Vibranium, the thing they made the overpowered pacemaker Arc Reactor out of, has been shown to be magnetic in the MCU. Now, imagine if a villain had found that out. I can tell you, it sucks ass when your settings are messed with, so I have no doubt they could have used that and then let Tony come up with a solution because he's Tony Goddamn Stark, and bam! Interesting plot, acknowledgement of Tony's disability, fun times had by all.
I know that none of this will ever be canon. I think it wouldn't have been even if Tony were alive. So, I'm asking the fans. Fanfic writers, fanartists, cosplayers, see what you can do! Explore the story that Marvel was too afraid to look at and little me would have killed to see.
(If any real people see this and want to write a fic with this in mind or something like that, feel free to ask me questions)
:)

Today I learned...
Ok, children. 聽As the title of my tumblr says, my day job is being a physician. 聽As such, I have to have Continuing Medical Education to keep my license and certifications to practice. 聽Well, today I fulfilled some of that by attending a cardiovascular conference. 聽And it was at the very last lecture at the conference that I learned something that made my jaw literally drop.
Are you all sitting comfortably? 聽Well, hold on to your butts, my lovelies!
NUCLEAR POWERED PACEMAKERS WERE A THING!
I shit you not! 聽Apparently, back in the 1970鈥瞫, some bright spark thought that making a pacemaker battery that was LITERALLY POWERED BY PLUTONIUM was a good idea. 聽The pros? 聽Well, the battery life was estimated to be about 200 years, so you would most definitely not have to worry about running out of juice. 聽The cons? 聽Weeeeell, the patient would be receiving a continual dose of radiation...along with their family...and anyone else in regular contact with them. 聽And then there is the slight problem that, once the person died, they would be considered a radiation hazard. 聽That means, no cremation, no burial at sea, no burial on land. 聽The solution? 聽Los Alamos (where the BOMB was first tested) has a cemetery at their nuclear waste landfill where these folks MUST be buried when they shuffle off this mortal coil.
The kicker? 聽Remember when I said above that nuclear pacemakers WERE a thing? 聽I lied. 聽There are an estimated 50-100 people still living in the U.S. who have these pacemakers! 聽Los Alamos labs has an info page on how to identify them and what to do if you run across one!
