But about the hc:

I hc that Draxum is chronically ill and suffered with it for most of his life, but as an alchemist, Drax had a lot of internalized ableism thinking he could "fix" himself through experimentation.

He did somewhat make progress on helping stabilize his symptoms, but he really only started to accept it when Mikey brought him out of his lowest point.

And then years later, Mikey's portal adventures jumpstart an illness that had been dormant in his genes, causing him to be shaky and weak.

He goes to Draxum also looking for a "fix", and he finds out Dad #2 is also disabled and is willing to help. He knows how hard the struggle is, and he's not gonna let Mikey wallow in the same feelings he did for so long.

been thinking about disabled turtles because I am disabled i need to make my own representation <3

ouat: physical disability i understand that disability affects every part of a person's life, so to include EVERY moment where physical disability plays a role would be to include the whole show(impossible), but i tried to make a compilation of some moments of how disability is represented and discussed on the show.

I don’t think enough ppl talk about how accessible revenge era makeup is. I know some ppl joke abt like baby’s first emo look. But as someone who struggles a lot with fine motor skills that general look is my go to because it’s so user friendly. I am so bad at makeup and I STILL get compliments whenever I do my little red eyeshadow revenge inspired look. It’s literally so great!!

Feeling overwhelmed

I wonder if Joey's dad was more appreciative of Michael than Joey when they were kids, or yknow, liked to compare Joey to Michael (and maybe he kind of ignored Lisa's achievements for misogynistic reasons - or just brought up how good she was to wonder why Joe, a guy, was coming home with those grades). Here you got Michael, hard-working little guy who is going to be something, and then you got Joseph who, to be nice, got so much academic potential, know what I mean, the potential is so there, at least he's pretty good at basketball and he can draw and build weird junk, but that won't a succesfull man make.

Headcanon: Mikey has a colostomy bag. When Mikey was mutated, he was so young that his yolk sac was still attached. During the whole kerfuffle between Lou and Draxum, Mikey's yolk sac became detached, and it never absorbed properly, so his digestive system was deformed. As a baby, he had horrible cramps, diarrhea and constipation, that Lou finally took him to a doctor in the Hidden City, who told him that Mikey's intestine was deformed and needed to be operated on. The doctor did surgery on the poor child. As a result, Mikey's intestine isn't connected to the rest of his bowels, but instead, his stoma sticks outside his body, where a colostomy bag catches his waste. Unlike his brothers, Mikey has to empty his colostomy bag into the toilet several times a day and replace his bag daily. Raph is super protective of Mikey for being in such a delicate state and insisted on Mikey wearing a stoma belt to protect his bag and exposed intestine during missions. During the first 5 years of having the bag, Splinter found that the boy was super active and didn't know you had to keep the thing on, and when it overflows, it REEKS! Nonetheless, Mikey doesn't let his colostomy bag get in the way of anything.

(I made this headcanon because I have a neice that's almost 2 years old. She has Down syndrome, and this poor little girl has had more hospital stays and surgeries than any of her siblings combined. When she was 9 days old, she was helicoptered to our state's best hospital for surgery. My little baby neice had an underdeveloped intestine and wasn't absorbing nutrients, so she had a colostomy bag for over a year. Very recently, she had surgery to correct it, and now she wears diapers.)

Because they’ve been sharing my hyperfixation and I’ve enjoyed figuring out how that’d work. They’re also my first two risetober pieces; a thing that I totally remembered was happening /hj

So, I don’t have a lot of concrete ideas for this au, just that I know it’s after the rise movie and some point after Eri’s rescue. I know Splinter decides to take his kids to Japan (this definitely includes April and Casey Jones Jr) so they can reconnect with their ancestral home.

While there shit goes down and they’re trapped on the same island UA is. Everyone goes onto the campus for safety (so I’m apparently going for after the first war arc Manga era) Splinter was an alumni (only barely recognizable from how much he’s changed) (Lou Jitsu looked a lot like 2012 splinter); he introduces his family to nezu who is more than happy to let them dorm and practice with 2-A, and gets them in touch with the on campus therapists.

Backstory:

Essentially it’s the same except the Yōkai are not in hiding and Splinter was actually with Draxum for 2 years while he made their sons. Of course Lou thought it was gonna be more like artificial insemination and natural shit, and less like mad scientist. Draxum made the boys to be weapons since he knew Lou was still on the run from Big Mama. And he just really wanted to do a bunch of genetic research with quirks and ancient yokai blood and shit. When Lou found out the boys were made with the soul purpose of being weapons (even with good intentions) he got pissed and after Mikey was fully formed, he took the boys and left. So him and Draxum are (almost) literally divorced dads.

They still grow up in the sewers cuz big mama ruled the surface and would chain splinter and the boys the instant she found them and use them for what they were made for: weapons.

Everything else is mostly the same, except when Leo takes Splinter to Big Mama. Cuz Splints has a panic attack as soon as he found out where they were going. Leo helped him calm down and explain; and then Leo fills Splinter in on what his plan is. It’s vague but that’s cuz they didn’t have specific details of the battle nexus and shit. Splinter disassociates whenever he’s in the room with big mama.

I don’t know about April and Casey’s quirks or anything yet, but I do know that ninpo is still very much a thing. But they register their ninpo as their quirk, along with the family quirk: Turtle Power!

@remmushound the Mikeys' near death experiences could be a kick in the ass for some of the team to start learning more ninpo techniques. Bay Raph and Bay Leo both feel helpless and stuck in different ways, and I have a thought that really deep meditation might help them get unstuck.

There's some 2003 fanfiction out there where Raph gets really good at astral projection after Mikey is captured, because he has to, because Leo has to do other things. I always figured that Raph and Mikey have a stronger spiritual connection to their own bodies and emotional cores, while Leo and Donnie were more mental and higher thought.

with all the discussion/discourse going on about ableism at the barricades, i realized i have a genuine question for other disabled people— how can those around you best help in highly physical/straining settings like shows/pits/barricades? like for example i’m diabetic so when we go to shows and i hop in the pit i tell my friends that if i start acting sleepy or disoriented to help me out of the crowd, but i’d like to know how to help look out for other disabled ppl too in those kinds of situations

Have an assortment of random headcanons! These are pretty much all disability and aid item related, specifically leaning towards neurodivergence. (Look me in my eyes and tell me these turtles are neurotypical. I dare you.) Based on my experiences with my own neurodivergence!

All of the turtles use compression clothes, mainly for their knee and wrist joints, though Leo does so more frequently.

Donnie and Mikey have echolalia.

Donatello uses multiple mnemonic devices as a way to retain information, mainly little songs he's learned or makes up himself.

Raph has sensitive teeth and grinds them in his sleep or when he's stressed, leading to a lot of mouth pain. Donnie created a custom mouth guard for him that could withstand his bite pressure.

Mikey has an oral fixation. He used to fuel this by keeping a bunch of lollipops on him, but slowed that down when Raph yelled at him for the amount of cavaties he got from it. As such, he uses chewelry/similar objects to help. (Don't tell Raph he still has the lollipops.) April recommended it for him, Donnie makes it.

Mikey has hundreds of sketches and paintings, all featuring his family. He also has plenty of scrapbooks with photos. Pictures of just them, group photos, tickets, menus, stickers--if it has a connection to or reminds him of someone he loves, it's in the book. He made them because he's afraid to lose people and be without physical pieces of their memory.

While he does enjoy energy drinks and coffee, Donnie doesn't drink it for the "wake up" effect it gives many other people. Because of his neurodivergence, it actually makes him calmer, more focused/centered, and can even make him sleepy. This opposite effect helps him work!

Raph doesn't drink overly sweet drinks because it makes his teeth hurt.

Leo has bouts of insomnia and falls asleep in the most random places because of how tired it makes him. Donnie also has difficulty sleeping due to intense periods of hyperfocus on certain projects. Usually they meet each other somewhere in the middle of it and binge Jupiter Jim or Lou Jitsu movies until they finally do fall asleep.

Many of Raph's stuffies are sentimental and collectors items, and have a dedicated shelf in his room. However, he has a few that are weighted, and that can be heated or chilled, as comfort items. He even has one that is weighted and lavender-scented as a sleep aid.

Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mikey are all fluent in sign. They use it to communicate when one or multiple of them is overwhelmed and can't handle physically speaking. (Donnie especially.) Splinter and Casey are also fluent, and April is still learning.

Raphael has bpd and is bipolar. he also has arthritis and POTS (basically meaning he faints if he stands up if he was sitting or laying down but theres other stuff) its cannon now stfu!!

Leonardo has ocd and a panic disorder. He has fibromyalgia and nerve damage too bro. ITS CANNON NOW FIGHT ME!!

Donatello has chronic migraines and social anxiety. hes also double jointed. I WILL MAKE THIS CANNON U CANT STOP ME!

Michelangelo has a depersonalization and derealization disorder. also he has insomnia.CANON IS MY ASS NOW SUCK IT!
