Dhruya - Manali Memories
A gift on the anniversary of the birth of a most spectacular individual, @burningsheepcrown. My dearest friend, may the coming year be filled with new adventures, more stories, and so much joy.
This is for you, I hope you like it:
*For context, Manali is a beautiful township nestled in the picturesque Beas River valley. It is a rustic enclave known for its cool climate and snow-capped mountains, offering respite to tourists escaping scorching heat of the plains. The tourism industry in Manali started booming only in the early 20th century, mainly because of its natural bounties and salubrious climate.
(to read more, go here)
///
“I can hear your teeth chattering from inside the room.” Dhruva said as he slid the balcony door closed behind him to keep the warmth in. He was suitably dressed in thick pants and a soft sweater.
“That’s cause it’s f-f-freezing out h-here!” Daya replied. He was standing with his back to Dhruva, too enraptured by the view to look at his boyfriend. He had his arms wrapped around himself in a hug, rubbing up his arms to try and warm himself. He was notably not dressed for the weather in his beach shorts and sleeveless undershirt.
“I’m sure your clothing choices don’t help either.” Dhruva remarked dryly, letting the blanket in his arms tumble open before draping them around Daya’s shoulders, and closing them down his front his his arms in a hug.
Daya sighed in relief as he sank his weight back onto Dhruva, confident the other man would catch him. A serene smile had settled on his face, and when he opened his eyes to look at Dhruva from where he was resting on his shoulder, they were filled with joy. Dhruva’s own heart flipped in his chest, quickening its pace as his arms squeezed his partner tighter. He leaned forward to nip at the tip of Daya’s nose, chuckling when the man scrunched his face adorably. Dhruva sighed, resting his cheek on top of Daya’s head to take in the view.
It truly was spectacular. They had gotten a room at the back of the hotel, so instead of facing over the city of Manali, they had an uninterrupted view of the forests and mountains. With a temperature approximately 20 degrees below their usual, the chill rose up even though their wool socks.
The trip had been spontaneous, for all that the idea had been rattling around in his head since that one night in the beach. They had been on their nightly walk, just enjoying the sound of the waves against the shore as they let the tensions of the day ebb away. Dhruva couldn’t remember how they had ended up on that topic, but he had spoken about how his training and schooling had given him opportunities to see many different parts of the country. Daya had smiled sadly, kicking at the sand as he said with forced casualness that he had barely ventured outside the city, much less the state.
And suddenly, the questions in his head of what special thing he could do for Daya had been resolved. Of course, their luck being what it was, no sooner had Dhruva looked up ticket prices, did they get slammed with a huge case that had taken a couple months to fully wrap up. Between the undercover work, the coordinating with the different districts, and the spooked crew splitting in all four directions, they had barely had a chance to catch their breath, much less spend time with each other outside of the office. What time they did get mostly involved them coming home, and face planting on the bed until the alarm went off the next morning.
But the case was resolved, and they weren’t due to testify for another couple weeks. Dhruva had coordinated everything with Murthi-ji, and only once he was sure that nothing would pop up to interrupt their get away, he had booked the tickets the very next day. Keeping Daya in suspense was a task of itself, but worth it for the look on the older man’s face as they’d approached their destination. The flight from Vizag to Delhi had been uneventful outside of Daya being restless, and earning quite a few glares from their fellow passengers.
Daya had protested when Dhruva had hauled him away from the city taxis to the car rental stand, saying they weren’t staying in Delhi, and badgered him the whole trip, until the scenery started to change.
Once the winter landscapes of Manali came into view, he had fallen into a stunned bewitchment, mouth open as he swiveled his head from left to right to capture the whole view. As they exited the highway to start going up the mountainous roads, Dhruva also felt the enchantment starting to affect him. As they drove through the curving roads, each turn revealed more and more mountains, the tallest ones disappearing above the clouds, and capped in white. The trees were coniferous, and rose a hundred feet tall, towering over the canyons and valleys, seeming to compete with the rocks to touch to the sky as well. The road itself was mostly free, the occasional car passing them, or coming from the opposite direction.
Dhruva’s smile had been more demure, but his chest was filled with warmth. Reaching a hand out, Dhruva had squeezed Daya’s thigh, and left his free hand there for the rest of the drive to the hotel. It was a long drive despite setting out from Delhi in the early hours of the morning, taking them the better part of the day, and they switched driving every so often to avoid getting leg cramps.
By the time they’d reached the lodge, night had fallen The entire town was light up in the most picturesque fashion. Daya had inhaled his dinner in record speed before racing back up to their room’s balcony to enjoy the view.
It had taken longer than Dhruva had anticipated to drag his partner back in, assuring him that the view would be better when it wasn’t pitch black. Daya had been more obliging when he realized Dhruva had conveniently forgotten to pack night clothes.
“What do you think?” Dhruva asked as they gazed out at the luscious greenery and the great mountains that rose up beyond the clouds in the distance. The skies were the perfect blue, with great white clouds that begged to be touched.
“While I could never give up the sea, I understand why people stay near the mountains.” Daya said, surprising Dhruva.
“They are pretty incredible.”
“Never seen anything like this before.”
Dhruva ducked down to nip at Daya’s ear, “Well, now you have.”
He unwrapped his arms from Daya, letting the other man catch the ends of the blanket as he went back to the room to retrieve the coffee tray. Daya shifted to one of the balcony chairs, leaning against the back, pulling the blanket to drape over his legs and abdomen. Dhruva handed him his cup of coffee before settling in the other chair, tucking one foot beneath his opposite thigh. Dhruva hummed as the hot coffee trickled down his throat, leaning his head back with his eyes closed.
A sudden inhale from Daya had his opening his eyes as he surveyed their surroundings. Before he could speak though, Daya kicked him lightly, pointing with his neck at the far corner of the balcony. On the top railing, a small bird sat, shaking out its feathers before it started to preen itself. Dhruva went as quiet and as slow as possible to avoid startling the bird, pulling out his phone from his pocket to open his camera and snap a photo. The phone’s volume was on though, and at the sound of the shutter going off, the bird cawed and jumped away, spreading its wings to head straight for the mountains.
“Did you get it?” Daya asked, as Dhruva cursed the phone.
“Yeah.” Dhruva admitted grumpily. Luckily the picture had turned out well. He extended his phone to Daya, who grabbed it. Daya finished the last of his coffee, placing the cup back on the tray. He weaved his hands together and stretched, cracking his back. “So how long as we staying?”
“Murthi-ji assured me he can hold down the fort till Wednesday.”
Daya’s eyebrows rose. “5 days?”
Dhruva grinned. “If we were going to take a holiday, I wanted to enjoy it, not rush it over a weekend.”
Daya ducked his head, but Dhruva could make out the pleased smile anyways.
“What’s on the agenda then?”
“We are just going to take it easy. Look around the down, and a couple nearby attractions. I’ve booked us an all day hike tomorrow-”
Daya groaned. “Bangaram, you just said we are on holiday.”
Dhruva stared him down. “In Manali. This is my first time here too, and I’ve never hiked the Himalayas before. It’ll be fun.”
Daya squinted at him. “Do you remember that conversation where I explained to you how our ideas of fun differ…”
Dhruva rolled his eyes. “Let’s see if you still think this after the hike.”
Daya sighed. “And the rest of the time?”
“There’s a lot of activities. We can choose after the hike. There are some really famous hot springs that sound really good too.”
That perked Daya up. “Hot springs? Like from the movies? Those exist in India?”
Dhruva laughed. “Everything is there in India, you just have to know where to go.”
Daya hummed. “I’m surprised. We are here for 5 days, and you only have a proper plan for 2 of them.”
Dhruva shrugged, hoping his blush wasn’t obvious. “I didn’t want to overload our trip.”
Daya smirked, rising from his chair to cross over to Dhruva’s, looming over him. Dhruva swallowed, breath hitching as one of Daya’s hands came to rest at the top of his thigh. “Was that the only reason?”
Dhruva was saved from responding when Daya sealed them mouths in a kiss that stole the breath from his lungs.
They ended up barely making it in time for breakfast.
///
The city was beautiful, a different bustle and rhythm to Vizag that the two men enjoyed thoroughly. The trip into town was lovely, and their visits to the nearby Hadimba Devi temple and Tibetan monasteries were a very new experience for the pair.
The hike did result in Daya complaining about being dragged out of bed so early. The actual hike shut him up though, as they slowly but steadily made their way up the mountain in a walk that stole their breath away both literally and metaphorically. It was night by the time they returned to the hotel after a traditional dinner in town, and both had just enough energy to strip down to their underwear before crashing into bed.
Next day’s activity was primarily focused on a trip to the Vashist hot springs that had them wishing they never had to leave those incredible waters. It was easy to understand why the waters were said to have healing abilities, it seemed to have washed away not just all the muscle aches from the day before, but muscle tension from years on the job.
Their fourth day had involved river rafting, an experience Dhruva would treasure just for the way Daya had alternated from shouting with joy to freaking out and nearly overturning their boat. After a nice lunch, the pair had driven up to the Solang valley where Daya had lit up like a child at his first proper encounter with snow as they rode up the cable car. They had devolved to a snow fight quickly, ending up with the pain nearly collapsed on top of each other, laughing with tears streaming down their faces. The colorful paragliders that dotted the sky had captured Daya’s attention, and they had raced to the location, just barely getting squeezed into the last trips for the day. Viewing the sun set behind the mountains from up high had been a sight neither would forget for a long time.
///
Dhruva yawned as he woke up, blinking blearily as he focused on the alarm clock. 6:00 AM.
They didn’t have any solid plans for the day, just enjoying their last few hours before they set out for Delhi. Dhruva turned his head to see Daya snoring softly, one arm tucked under his face. When Dhruva tried to get out of bed, Daya made a protesting noise, tightening the leg he had thrown over Dhruva’s. Moving slowly, Dhruva had eased away to use the restroom. As he made his way back, his gaze got caught in the sliver of space where they’d not pulled the curtain, and his eyes widened.
He hurried back to Daya, shaking him until the man woke up, glaring at him. “What?”
Dhruva’s excited face had Daya blinking and repeating his question in a more curious tone. Dhruva urged him to get dressed in his winter clothes, and went to the balcony, dragging Daya with him. Daya’s sharp inhale was very loud.
Snow was fluttering lightly to the ground, seeming to coat the entire world in a layer of white.
“It’s beautiful.”
Dhruva reached out to grab Daya’s hand blindly, squeezing it tightly. The early morning chill was making itself felt, but neither felt the slightest inclination to move. Until Daya tugged on their entwined hands to drag Dhruva against his side, grabbing the back of his neck and kissing him in a clash of teeth. Dhruva clutched at Daya’s waist, molding himself against the man. When the kiss ended, they separated but an inch, leaning their foreheads together.
“Thank you.” Daya whispered, for once no jest or or hesitation in his voice. Just a sincerity and a confession wrapped in one.
Dhruva’s heart skipped a beat. “Happy anniversary, Bangaram.”
“That was a couple weeks ago.” Daya huffed.
Dhruva smiled sheepishly. “Couldn’t exactly wish you when I was in the middle of a drug bust.”
Daya’s hands squeezed him, pulling him back in for a kiss.
It was hard to say how long they stayed out there, but when their feet lost feeling, the pair was forced back to their bedroom.
The drive back to Delhi, and the subsequent flight back to Vizag were filled with a sense of wonder, both feeling like they had not only discovered a new layer to themselves, but also reveled in the beauty of sharing it with their lover.
Whatever happened next, this would be a trip they would remember till their dying day.

Forevermore (2)
“My friend’s father died in an accident, his body was taken for the post mortem,” In a large assembly of senior officers and officers in training, Dhruva speaks, presenting his view on the rules still present in Indian law System since olden time which are completely irrelevant as of today.
“By providing the excuse of ‘Post Mortem is not performed after 6 PM’, the body was left as is till next morning. The family was very disturbed by this incident” He continues his views confidently.
“Rules are right sir, but, in olden days there was no proper electricity hence it wasn’t possible to perform post mortem after dark. But we still follow those many blind rules. In today’s era even phone apps get updated regularly so why can’t a country with a billion of population get updated too? This incident influenced me a lot”, He explains his point with no hesitation, laying down his views thoughtfully.
“That was admirable”,  The senior officer praises his views.
“May I share something, Ma’am?”,  Gautam questions, catching the attention of the present fellow peers , officers and his friends.
“Yes you may Mr.Gautam”, replies the Senior Officer encouraging him to share whatever is that he wanted to share.
“The reason for the strength of my social views is, Dhruva”, Gautam speaks, his voice proud and confident.
“One day he told me, Kasab, involved in Mumbai attack was 18 years old, and the boy involved in Delhi gang rape was 17 years old. Similarly, boys involved in any time of extortion and robbery of country are in age of 17-18 years. It doesn’t take a lot of time for a man to learn and commit wrong, but a good person never sees time or make excuses to commit good.” He continues as everyone listens to him attentively.
“These words of him have left a great impact on me. ‘For a good person committing good deeds, every moment is great’, with these words he has gifted me this watch.” He proudly holds up his wrist, the watch strapped on it on display for everyone to see.
Tick
 “Every tick of this watch”
Tick
“Reminds me of Dhruva”
Tick
“That is why I never separate this watch from myself” He states proudly….. not realizing how cheesy it sounds.
Everyone bursts into giggles upon hearing the last sentence as Dhruva watches his friend fondly.
“Quiet please”, The Senior Officer commands and everyone composes themselves and the session continues.
As Dhruva smiles as his friend’s short speech, he is disturbed by the vibration of his phone, a message had been sent to all of his friends and him.
I know that you all jump the wall at night….
If you don’t want me to report this to the seniors Dhruva must be present at the Park Hotel by this evening.
All of them read the message and glance worriedly at each other.
“What’s this, a new headache? Who could have sent this message?” Karan questions worried and frustrated.
“Posting is due in next few days, if the seniors found out about this we would be in big trouble”, Gautam states worriedly.
“We can deal with 40 people outside easily, but dealing with the seniors….. Tenshion ho rahi hai yaar”, Ranveer states tensly, worried about the situation.
“Instead of making the matter a big deal, lets solve it peacefully”, Vijay advises softly to sooth their nerves.
“Look, we didn’t start this to leave it in the middle. They have called to meet, haven’t they. Let’s meet them and hear them out.”
Tumblr media
At Park Hotel…
Dhruva arrives at the meeting point, fidgeting with his pen and glancing at his watching. He subtly glances to where his friends are sitting having a clear view of him and his surroundings in case he needs help. He looks around for any sight of the person in question, glancing at his friends he gives them a slight shrug.
And then…..
Gautam and Vikram catch the sight of someone, recognition flashing on their faces.
Dhruva catches it. He focuses his hearing without turning around, catching the sound of hurried footsteps approaching his way. Before the unknown person could push him the pool, he sidesteps causing them to stumble and almost fall in the pool. But before they could fall, Dhruva catches them by their wrist, still facing away from them.
Ishika….
He recognises her without even turning  around.
“What is she doing here?” His friends question eachother as Ishika dangles above the pool, Dhruva’s hold being the only thing keeping her from falling. But as soon as realization hits him, annoyed, he lets go of her wrist.
Splash
Ishika falls in the pool. Dhruva looks back annoyed as she emerges from the pool. She tries to explain herself, but he doesn’t listen and walks away still annoyed by her antic. He meets his friends halfway, fidgeting with his pen.
“Was the message sent by her?” Ranveer questions.
“Yeah, it was her”, Dhruva replies.
“Did something happen between you two?”, Gautam questions curiously.
“ Go, why don’t ask her yourself ”,Dhruva replies with a sarcastic smile and walks away, his friend calling after him.
“To become an IPS Officer like my papa, after passing my civils, I too went to Mussoorie for my training. There, for the first time, I met Dhruva.”
Dhruva drives behind the bus as Ishika enjoys the beauty of Mussoorie, all the while leaning out the window.
Dhruva honks his horn as Ishika pays no mind to it, being slightly tipsy from the beer she was drinking.
“Kaun hai bey wo?” Bujji leans out the window to look at the cause of the noise.
To her surprise a very handsome stranger seemed to me honking his horn.
“HEY! Ishika, he is honking the horn for you!” She calls out to her friend. Ishika turns around and notices Dhruva.
“Hello!? Bus rokne ke liye kahiye!” Dhruva requests her.
“Wow, you are doing hard work, are you following us?~” She teases him leaning on the window.
“What?!” Dhruva asks back.
“Sundar ladki dikhte hi follow karne lag jaoge?” She teases again as Dhruva shakes his head, amused at her teasing.
“If you keep following us like this then…. Bujji?~” She calls to her friend.
“Ishuu?~”, Her friend coos as she leans her head back out again, a beer bottle in hand.
“Then I will make you marry her!”, She states sternly as her friend hiccups and accepts the proposal.
As Dhruva Lags back, Ishika and her friend lean back into the bus, all the girls laughing and cheering at the scenario that just occurred.
Suddenly, the bus stopped. Dhruva had parked his bike at front to stop the bus. They notice him climbling on.
“Yeh to andar he aa raha hai yaar”, one of her friend states worriedly.
“Two minutes”, Dhruva tells the bus driver as he climbs aboard.
“Bulane par kese nahi ayega.” Her friend states again.
“Sir-” Bujji hurries in front of him before he pushes her to the side.
“Moti toh nahi chalegi, par tum zaroor chalogi”, He flirts looking her up and down before pulling her for a ki-
“Stop It”, Dhruva calls out annoyed breaking her memory lane. “Tell them the truth”, He orders before walking away.
Ishika looks guiltily in between his friends.
“Don’t look at me like that yaar……. If this happened then- ”She explains before being interrupted by Gautam who asks her to tell them the truth.
As Ishika goes back to properly explaining how they met, how she had confessed her feelings to him and how he had refused her proposal.
Dhruva walks out the hotel while pulling out his phone. He calls the one person he had been wanting to call to explain the situation.
Ring~
The person on the other side picks up the call in one ring, indicating they had been waiting for him to call.
“Hello? Dhruva”
Her sweet but tired voice rings on the call, instantly calming his nerves, an unconscious smile settling on his lips.
 “Bangaram…..”

Fanaa Ho sabhi dooriyan part 2 - "My Greatest Regret"
Part 1
The bullet flashed by, not giving him even the light of day. He fell on the cold hard ground. His errors would become his demise, his anger bloomed fully into guilt and his sorrow now hurt more because it was sunjustified. Nobody whould be sorry for him.
"Get him!! We can't let him escape!!!"
Their voices were muffled, mixing in with his own desperate screaming conciousness.
He had not completed his mission. In his head the girls were still in peril because Meghnas girls and wife would now be just as lost in mouring. His one and only wife, how could he ever face her? What would she think of him seeing him in this sorry state? Would she kiss his heart and hold his hand? Any saving grace should have ben saved for Meghna.
The only thing he could do now was to lie down, lie down drowning in their fresh pools and handprints of blood. How ironic could his fate even be? The red liquid was fast leaking out of his body and the bullet stung his every nerve within the elbow tendons and the cramps were paralyzing. The world became a thin line between his eyelid and cheek, then he shut both of his eyes.
The home was cold and his steps sounded throughout the hallways.
His wedding photos framed, hanging by the dinnertable depicting his warmest most exciting moment.
Food left on the table, cold and colorless.
The sting stabbing deep in his heart as he for once in those tired workdays quickly looked around his shoulder.
Turning to see an infinate abyss of stars mirrored in the mirth of his blight he recalled the warmth of her deep mellow-brown intellectual eyes.
His duty to his work had defeated his duty to the love of his life.
He heard the sirens come near him from a distance.
...
When Rhea got dispached to the ambulance she feared the worst as a wife but knew the had a duty as a doctor. On arrival to the drug palace she barely believed her own eyes, this was the most brutal scene she ever had to work at. The place was a chaos of broken bodies and she could not shake off the terror running down her spine, which ones were alive, which one was Dhruva?
She barely recognized some from the cuts and scrapes of broken glass done to their faces and limbs. She taught her knuckles until they were white and continued over to the next body, whose chest lay covered in red.
"Call more people over!!" She ordered her coworker. "We need tweezers, tissiues and rubbing alcohol, fast."
Rhea was forced to remove two sets of bullets from Dhruva's body on the spot. She could not bare leave her husband's chest ruined by shrapenal. Dhruva groaned weakly but went limp short after.
...
She then sat in complete scilence as the ambulance kept driving. They had patched his body up as tightly as they could, the real work had to be done on an opperating table. She just hoped they had enough time.
"Hey, you did a great job removing those bullets." Rishi tried to comfort her.
"But, you heard how he cried!..." She lamented. What if she made him lose his composure with her unnececary whining for attention?
"We will help you, even so if it takes the entire night, I will stay by your side." Her friend hugged her in comfort.
"Thank you, so much." She quickly wiped away her tears.
...
The first thing they did was to hook his right arm up to a fresh supply of blood. They had to make sure his heart and brain continued recieving oxygen as to prevent a cardiac arrest.
It was his own fault for yelling at her to begin with. She didn't want to blame it on his mission, plenty of lives had ben saved But then who was that lying on the sanitized table under the green tarp in front of her?
As the needles were woven in and out of his flesh the machine showed his heartrate go from stable, Rhea was still focused. To slowfalling, she had to keep her hands steady. To critical.
She looked up for one quick second to grab the scizzors and realized while she had focused on fixing him, the bag of blood had completely emptied out and his heart-rate was going critically low.
As the desperation grew she realized how limited their options were, she declared;
"Im his blood match. We need to transfer the blood immediately!!"
Rishi responded at once "If you two are truly betrothed you really have no other choice right? I permitt it, you have to be there for him."
"Ok, quickly prepare sanitazion, tubes and needles!"
She connected to Dhruva's arm through the machine and the bpm detector screen showed his pressure finally balancing out. Rhea took steady breaths as she reassured herself everything would be fine. Somehow.
She nearly fell down on her knees from exhaustion and reached for her husband's hand. The other nurses quickly caught her and gave her a chair to sit on while the operation finished.
...
The sound of the door to the house opening made the tension start growing in the air. She turned around. He looked back at her. Thry stared almost blankly at each other as one of them spoke a word.
"Hey" said Dhruva.
"Hi" she answeared.
There was two pots of food on the table but no plates, so Dhruva offered to go get them. He entered the kitchen where Rhea stood getting the cutlery and as he reached for them he felt the sting returning in his arm and he couldn't complete the motion, making the plate fall to the floor. As soon as Rhea saw the accident she reached out and caught it midair. Also touching Dhruva's hand. How cliche could this get, it felt like the first moment two lovers looked at each other, picking up some fallen papers, greeting each other and then walking down the hallway to some meeting or class. But this was nothing close to that.
Rhea felt reborn, her husband was back and she could feel him. She fast put down the plate and hugged him tightly to herself never wanting him to go again.
"Please never give me such a scare again, Dhruva" she said, tears breaking her words "Promise me you're never going to place your entire soul into the work you do, I need you to be present here, with me, okay? Because we're really building on something here..."
Dhruva almost clung to her himself as he had missed her so much after all this time apart.
Then he felt the kick against his abdomen. A tiny kick coming from Rhea's core. He separated their bodies and held her by the sides of her waist just staring in wonder.
"Gosh how long was I gone?" His eyes welled up in sadness, and in joy, but most of all regret, he had yet to come home, gods! He hadn't even seen the first pictures from the hospital.
"I will show you the mamograms but first we have to have dinner, come sit down." They both grabbed a plate each, Dhruva reassuring he wouldn't drop it again. He would now have more time with his wife as his injuries healed and the super cop missions could be given to someone less buisy.

colours of the shadows
june 17: courage, my dear
"she likes you. what's wrong with that?"
my best friend roughly shoves his door open. i follow him inside, not ready to end the conversation.
"what's wrong is i don't like her." i sit in his chair—i don't dare sit on the bed—and watch him fling his jacket onto the floor. he paces the room, frustrated. "i don't get why you still don't understand that."
"she seems nice enough," i start half-heartedly, but i shut my mouth when he glares at me. right. i'd literally just witnessed another of her attempts to get his attention. he flops onto his bed, hands over his face and groaning in frustration. "maybe she'll back off if you get a girlfriend?"
he lets his hands fall, props himself up on his elbows to look at me. "why are you so interested in my love life? mind your business." i swivel the chair around to the desk so he doesn't see that my face is heating. "it's not like you've got anything going on, either."
yeah, there's a reason for that, i think, but out loud, i ask, "why are you so stubborn? having a relationship won't kill you. it might be fun."
"not the kind of fun she wants." he clenches his fists, takes a deep breath. his jaw works like he's trying to say something but can't. that surprises me; he usually tells me what's on his mind. i can't say the same of myself, of course: i'd take my secret to the grave. it's enough being his friend. "fine." i startle at the ferocity in his voice. "you want to know why i don't want to be in a relationship?" i open my mouth to say, no, you don't have to, when he spits it out. "i'm…i don't feel sexually attracted to her. to…to anyone."
i must look confused, because he sighs and sits up. "i'm asexual. i think."
"oh." i recognize the term from all the reading we did for a case involving a transgender student. suddenly everything clicks into place. a lot more makes sense about my best friend.
"besides," he adds, "i like someone else. but who's going to want to be with someone who won't have sex with them?"
"what are you talking about?" i'm steadfastly ignoring the way my heart sinks. "anybody who's worth anything would want to be with you."
he huffs, ducking his head. blushes so easily for such a macho guy. "what does that make you, then?" he meets my gaze with a teasing grin.
i don't answer. i don't break eye contact. i don't know what i'm doing. i don't trust myself to speak.
the smile slowly slides off his face. his eyes dart between mine like he can't believe that i'm not denying my statement. his lips part in surprise. it's likely wishful thinking, but i see hope in his expression.
i'm training to be a police officer. if i can't be courageous, what good am i?
"so, i, um," i start. "i have something i need to tell you."
