TWIN RUNES - FAQ
What exactly is this AU about?
Twin Runes is essentially a comedic crossover AU between the universes of Deltarune and Undertale. No fancy nicnacs. Just the characters being their chaotic selves. But there might be some darkness lurking up ahead...
When is the next comic?
The comic updates most Sundays at 6:30 PM Central European Time.
Why is this AU called Twin Runes?
The name is more or less a play on the typical naming format of most AU's by featuring the "Runes" part. There are no literal Twin Runes. The whole name is more of a stand in for Undertale and Deltarune as parallel worlds. Hence the "Twin" part.
When does Twin Runes take place?
This AU takes place between a hypothetical Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of Deltarune. On the Undertale side of things, it takes place post neutral route just as Frisk was about to deliver Undyne's letter to Alphys.
Is the player a thing in this AU?
The player lost control over both human children as soon as Frisk entered the world of Deltarune.
When Chapter 3 and 4 are released, will it affect the story?
Any chapters after Chapter 3 won't affect the story in the grand scheme of things. If possible, I might make a reference to Chapter 3, but all in all Twin Runes created a new timeline so to speak.
What's up with Kris' and Frisk's hair?
The red bits of their hair is more or less a representation of their souls. That in turn is also why Chara doesn't have that feature. They are soulless. It's a stylistic choice.
What's that thing on Kris' chest?
It's a scar they got from tearing out their soul.
And why do they have weird lines all over their body?
Both Kris and Frisk's anatomy resemble that of ball-jointed dolls. They appear just as markings across their bodies. Think of them as elaborate birthmarks. Kris and Frisk are still made of flesh and blood, but are in fact hypermobile. The reason as to why they do is still a little secret :)
People here like to refer to these markings as "puppet limbs".

Frisk changes their main sweater colors with Kris when they enter the Dark World.
Can other ghosts see Chara? (pre Darkner transformation)
No, only Frisk and Kris are able to see Chara.

So, was Chara in the locket all along?
No, Chara possessed the locket to become a Darkner.
Where are Jevil and Spamton? Are they in Castle Town?
The Fun Gang have already fought these two in the previous chapters and added them into their inventory. Outside of that little dream sequence, neither will be making an appearance.
Is anyone from Undertale Yellow gonna make an apperance?
Outside of a tiny cameo from Clover (that has no greater bearing on the story) no one from Undertale Yellow is going to make an appearance.
Is (insert character here) gonna go to the Dark World/underground?
With the way the story is going to play out, only the main group will be heading to this new Dark World. The rest of the story will be taking place there.
Is the Group Project miniseries canon to Twin Runes?
It was made before Twin Runes was conceived and before I had any idea I would make a series. It is it's own self-contained story.

How did you come up with the idea of Twin Runes?
Twin Runes is an offshoot of a separate script I wrote. It's a similar concept but turned on its head. The funny moments in that script made me just continue what now is the start of Twin Runes. I pretty much just wanted to see if I am actually capable of drawing a comic to begin with. So... in a way Twin Runes is my first attempt at a comic ever. If I ever finish Twin Runes, then I know I can tackle turning that mammoth project of a script into a comic too.
In the grand scheme of things these two projects are sister series. They have A LOT in common and even share similar plot elements. When Twin Runes is over you will automatically also know certain mysteries of The Other Script.
What is The Other Script?
As of this moment I call The Other Script: "Lost in the In-Between". At its core it's an inverse of Twin Runes. I.e. Kris falling into the underground and being aided by Frisk on their quest to return home. The story and jokes are a considerably more grounded than in Twin Runes and so are the characters. Though they do have their moments from time to time. The overall mood of that script is a lot darker in nature and it's a 200+ page passion project of mine.
Am I allowed to make fanart?
ABSOLUTELY! You are very welcome to make fanart if you feel like it. Please let me know if you do by tagging me, so I can share it with everyone to see so that you get the appreciation you deserve :)
Can I use the funny faces you draw for memes or for private stuff with friends?
That's what they're here for :)
Is there x ship in this comic?
The focus of the story is not on shipping. If it's in the game it will very likely be mentioned or brought up, but that's about it.
What pronouns do you go with for the human children?
I try to stick as close as possible to the games so I use THEY/THEM FOR ALL OF THEM WITHOUT ANY EXCEPTIONS.

Notes:
-Well… this took a long time to finish, especially in drawing Monsterkind’s home on the surface… Obviously some of the layout and buildings is ripped straight from Deltarune’s light world.
-There are a lot of cameos from both Undertale and Deltarune. I replicated some of the UT/DR sprites in the art by copying their original sprites ripped at Spriters Resource. Some of the background characters may have been modified from their original sprites. Same for some of the buildings.
-I like to think that monsters are able to bring some of the structures in the underground onto the surface. Probably able to do so with magic.
-I headcannon that Undertale takes place somewhere in the near future so I figured, why not say that technology advanced enough to have giant robots people can ride around in? I’m a mecha fan you see, and after playing Deltarune’s Trash Machine battle and watching Inverted Fate’s mech fight, I was like: “you know what, I’m gonna put mechs in this AU.”
-When drawing the panals showing where the rest of the Undertale cast is right now, I thought of them as extensions to where they left off at in their credits scenes in Undertale.
-The panal where Mettaton and Mad Mew Mew are doing their dance battle is actually from this sprite art made for Famitsu I think? LINK
-First panal dialouge inspired by this page here from @lynxgriffin ‘s Flowey Origins comic (also my main inspiration for this comic of mine) . UT - Flowey Origins Part 7 by LynxGriffin on DeviantArt
-EDIT: Changed the mechs into robot duck tanks based on the Thrash Machine options you can make in Deltarune Chapter 1. After some thinking, I feel like the mechs that I drew here don't fit the goofy aesthetic vibe of Monsterkind, so I went with something sillier instead, and it make more sense with Sans's silly nature anyway. Also, the Duck Tank is piloted by yours truly.... (bows)

that cybercity is like a bit ocean themed (dolphins and like miami neon colors……) so kinda summer themed as well and is the location for the events and start of snowgrave. honestly i really don't know there's just too much and it mightve been brought up in some part of the internet that i don't frequent so yea hard question. im shivering i need to sleep i can't think abt this. that the first chapter is about 5-8 years of your life and the second is 9-12. cuz lancer and whimsy and not knowing anything about yourself and only being limited to fairytale like perception of the world, and then cyberworld is like well discovering the internet haha wOW and all the awful awful things in it. like in the first chapter there were awful things but they weren't like worded so clearly, second is when u understand whats capitalism about. also one of the main points in this theory of mine is lesbianism and how one of clover's heads can't even say that she likes girls she doesnt know what that even is so much that its buried in the game files but its there….. and noelle is like super enthusiastic but awkward about her lesbianism and idk. projecting. i had the same things at the same ages. ugh. this theory came to me when i was thinking about jevil's gender btw. he's a casual trans femme
24. topic that brings up the most rancid discourse
no fucking idea the only discourse i remember witnessing in the dr community as a whole was that one time a guy in the spamvil server critiqued that spam was always like the uke or power bottoming in nsfw depictions and it wasnt even like a discourse just a discussion i think they just got a lil emotional over it. mostly nsfw stuff surrounding spampton i think tho. im just. sensing that. oh and ralsei's femboy design too. i thought the guy was a spider when i was a kid. so yea shit surrounding gender and sexuality as per usual.

fun facts when creating delivery!
note: don’t forget to join the 72 fun while it last [♡]!!!
1. i made the characters designs at three am
2. xxx!papyrus was supposed to be the original third outcode but was scrapped three days later
3. xxx![redacted] design was a week after and it was around two am in the morning but wasn’t finalized
4. i made three concept art of xxx![redacted]
5. xxx!frisk backstory is somewhat inspired by “my time” by bo en and some concept of the game “omori” by omocat
6. originally, xxx!sans was supposed to have xxx!frisk’s backstory, but i found that xxx!frisk suited it better
7. xxx!sans cards magic are somewhat inspired between deltarune card-theme and とみー (on twitter) pose
8. when thinking about xxx!sans’ design i originally wanted him to have either royal-wear or tech-wear but was scrapped
9. xxx!sans color palette was going to be basil or omori type of color
10. i added flowers to xxx!frisk’s hair because i was going to originally change up xxx!frisk’s hairstyle but didn’t, it look basic so i added the flowers and i liked it
11. the characters were going to be in one au together and them just being the survivors of the broken au, but the designs didn’t fit together, and then i remember alive comics (by tatatale) and was influenced by having the characters come from different au’s/being outcodes
12. i was going to give it a name (example: [insert name]tale or under[insert name]) but decided against it, since they’re not part of a tale no more =)
13. i wanted the characters somewhat represented the routes in undertale [pacifist, neutral, genocide]
14. was going to give xxx!frisk powers/magic but decided against it since they don’t like to fight / i saw it as being overpowered
15. my two friends [kal and bread] encouraged me to post delivery when i was showing them my au idea and post that i had saved in draft, so it’s their influence that i posted “delivery!” on april 18
16. after scrapping xxx!papyrus’s design, i was going to make xxx!chara but forgot about it and made xxx![redacted] instead.. oops

(Delta Experiment)
Hey, everyone. I’ve got some really important news to share with all of you.
It’s no secret that my church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. You probably know about the missionaries that go door-to-door and teach people. What you may not know is that that’s only one of the ways in which people can serve as a missionary, and that a portion of missionaries assist with charity work and other service.
You can probably guess where I’m going with this. ^^;
Starting on October 15, 2021, i’m going to be away on religious service. If this seems sudden... it was to me too! I was originally going to start in January of the new year, but the date has been moved up as of just a day ago. It’s.. rather daunting... but exciting, at the same time!
What does this mean for my projects?
I’ll have limited internet access, and limited time to work on art. And so, it means Delta Experiment has to go on hiatus. Believe me, I wish I could continue, but there’s just no feasible way I can find the time to work on it in a timely enough manner, especially with the whole survey / audience participation aspect. It requires a sort of internet presence that I just won’t be able to keep up.
Regarding the Discord: Since I’m not going to be here, I’m not sure what will happen to it. I’m still trying to figure out a solution. It may have to be archived for the time being, but we’ll see...
Regarding other art: I may be able to do some artwork here and there, but this would likely be sparse. I’m not really sure if I’ll be able to post it here, either.
How long will I be gone?
I’m not sure exactly. But it’s probably going to be somewhere between 6 and 12 months. It could be longer. Definitely no more than 24 months, though.
I’m sorry to leave so suddenly, especially right on the heels of Deltarune Ch. 2′s release. This is a wonderful time for the Undertale community, and I wish I could continue to make content and laugh alongside everyone.
But, life has other plans. This is something I need to do, both for spiritual and mental purposes. To tell the truth, I’ve been a bit burnt out on comic creation recently, and I needed a break - this just happens to be the perfect opportunity to take one. I’m really excited to get started, and I think this is going to be a good experience.
I can’t thank everyone enough for your continued support on this project. When we first began, I thought it would be something too niche, or too weird for people to enjoy, but again and again I’ve been surprised by the responses we’ve gotten. Everyone is so kind. I’ve really met some amazing people through this project, including (but not limited to): @thatpastaguy , @cupcakepaints , @kuttiesstuff , @corpupine , @vanwoodva , @twoallnighters , and everyone on the Delta Experiment Discord (looking at you, Bo Tie). I’ve even got to meet some of the creators I’ve admired for a long time, like @wily-art , @lynxgriffin , and @drawloverlala . Everyone listed here is a very cool person, and well worth following, so consider doing that if you haven’t already. There’s more people I could probably name, but we’d be here all day...
Any amount of time away from the internet is a long time. A part of me is really afraid that everyone will forget about this, and that everything will have been for nothing. And if that’s the case, then I’m really grateful to have been able to make something people enjoyed, even if just for a little while. This story means a lot to me, and I really want to see it completed. Making these comics, and the experiences that have followed, have made me extremely happy, and I hope they’ve made you happy, too.

* Fav Undertale/Deltarune characters?
Undertale: Undyne, Papyrus and Sans! Deltarune: Susie, Queen and Lancer!
* Can I dub your comics? Can I translate your comics? Can I do fanarts/fanfics/etc? Can I ship your characters with others? Can I roleplay your characters? Can I use your characters in my AU? Can I make fusions/shipchildren/alt versions?
-Yes to all! You are free to do whatever you want with the A L I V E characters (and if you tag me so I can see it, it would make me happy!).
-However, If you take my own comics/illustrations (for dubs, translations, etc) I only want you to credit me with a link to my tumblr (please, don’t repost on websites famous for stealing art like Wattpad/Pinterest, on websites dedicated to uploading your own art, or on websites where I already have an account! Sites similar to Tumblr, like Lofter, are ok!), and if you are going to dub my art and you have your channel monetized, that's fine, all I ask is that you donate a part of that money to charity.

* Since when are you in this fandom?
This is weird but despite Undertale is from 2015 I just discovered it in march 2020 ; u ; ) I wanted to do this tumblr when I saw there were AU’s and roleplay stuff, but I was afraid I couldn’t find time to make updates and that’s why I didn’t do it before. But in the end I was so excited and really wanted to do a lot of fanarts, that I created this blog.
This blog was just to post my fanarts, and at first I didn’t want to start an AU due to lack of time. But in the end I decided to do something simple, like some characters in the void with their stories and asks.
…It ended up being an AU. ( ｡•́‿•̀｡)
* What is Lytta’s gender? And their age?
Lytta’s gender is neutral, like Frisk and Chara (they/them). I never chose a gender for them so if you want to think they’re a woman or a man and want to use she/her or he/him, it’s ok! Just don't confuse people, since the canon is still non-binary. So please, for asks to this blog keep using they/them.
IRL Lytta is 20 years old in the first and second season, and 21 in the third season. Their avatar in game is Chara’s face in Frisk’s body, so their appearance is the same as them. In this AU classic Frisk have around 12/13 years old, like Chara’s appearance.
* What is the name of this AU?
This AU is called “A L I V E”. You can also use “Alivetale” or “Alive AU” if you want, I don’t mind. Remember; “Tatatale” is just the silly name I gave to this blog, and it has nothing to do with the AU or myself! You can call me Kao.
* How would Insans react to (character name)?
-If they look human, he’ll be mad. He’s trying to be a good boy now, so he probably won’t attack and just hide behind a friend. Past Insans would try to kill them.
-If they look like Papyrus, he’ll be scared.
-If they’re another monster, it’ll depend on how they meet. (You don’t treat someone who is polite the first time you see them in the same way as if you see that same person attacking you.)
I want to say sorry if my English is awful, since is not my mother language, I just try my best.
I update the main comic when my free time allows it. I’m sorry if I can’t update like before.

Something that interests me is the fact that Toby Fox only expected to get a small fanbase for Undertale. But look at what it's spiraled into. Many comics, fanfictions, fangames, fanart, and theories have been made for a game he expected to be very small. I guess he set his expectations to be way too low. I don't know where I'm really going with this rambling, I just think it's interesting.
Yeah man. It is kinda wild. And what’s even more wild is that like, even after 5 years, some of us are still here. Like I’ve been in this fandom since I was like... 11? 12? And this year I turned 17. I don’t see myself leaving this fandom anytime soon despite how many people say we’re dead. From my perspective, I don’t see a dead fandom, I see a fandom who is very much smaller than how it started but still thriving. Toby Fox inspired so many people and I find that so awesome! I find it so amazing how many fan works Undertale and Deltarune have sparked! And those fan works inspired others to do the same!
Part of me hopes that one day my silly little fan comic ask blog of this ridiculous little indie game might inspire some one else. My fanbase might be a small handful of this small community, but I still hope one day I can reach and inspire people to pursue their passion. Even if that passion involves hype fixating over a fictional world about monsters.

Desperately wanted to draw the boy, so take humanization.
Gotta say, I think this my best one yet. I'm experimenting with colours and shadows/highlights and it made this look so much better than with just flat colouring. Imma do more of this, but for now take the precious golden child!

I do have some ideas on how this would work, so I'll just throw them here while I suffer under blooming AU ideas.
This would probably have to be a timeline without Cream or Nightkiller/Fluffynightkiller, but everyone can still vibe together.
Cross and Nightmare wouldn't stand being around each other for too long but in secret really want to spend all the time in the world with each other. It gets to the point where it's very obvious to basically everyone but them, and a few other people (probably Dream and Killer, maybe Ink as well) decide to try and bring them together somehow, despite constant glaring and just the inability to not annoy the hell out of each other.
They end up sorta understanding each other and their personalities and slowly connect until they can be left alone together for an extended period of time without attempting to kill each other.
Idk who'd confess first or what would happen and all that, I'm just spitting words out here and hoping sense can be made of them.
I shall now desperately wipe words off my whiteboard to make space for a whole idea that's forming that I know won't leave me unless I do something about it and maybe draft some designs and concepts and all that.

Thought: Deltarune AU where the school has to put up with a very anti-LGBT teacher who holds semi-weekly "talks" about how they should all be anti-LGBT as well. Kris decides to p*ss off that teacher as much as they can while obtaining a relationship at the same time. Susie, Noelle and Berdly all randomly join them in detention and they all bond over being part of the community and just vibing.
It switches between angst, problems and dealing with toxicity to just fluff and vibing together.

So I’m currently drawing a comic which depicts my take on the “Frisk takes Flowey to the surface” scenario. As you could tell in the title, this comic serves as my “extension” of the post pacifist ending of Undertale, particularly Flowey’s epilogue dialogue from said ending.
Since this is the first time I’m writing a full scale Undertale comic, I’m working on how I’m handling writing for UT characters, as well as providing my own lore that I’m hoping would be canon compliant. But feel free to provide feedback on how I’m writing within the Undertale universe, and I can see if I can address them to the best of my ability somehow.
As of this writing this comic is still in the works so hopefully I can upload more of these as I complete them.
Notes:
This comic is inspired by LynxGriffin’s Flowey comic where Frisk takes him to the surface. In fact this comic really opened my eyes in that no… you don’t need to “re-goat” Flowey back into Asriel so that he could be brought to the surface. Should note that the 4th panal was referenced off from this comic's 4th panal here (its from the same comic linked above) since I suck at drawing and needed some inspiration for this scene. @lynxgriffin I hope you dont mind.
I consider the Alarm Clock Dialogue to be canon within the Undertale universe. But one thing that I found strange is that although it seems to be a post pacifist world, Flowey is apparently on the surface being an edgy flower boy, a far cry from his dialogue from his post-pacifist epilogue. Like, was Flowey nice one day and then afterwards he’s an edgy boi on the next day? This comic will (hopefully) address the transition, but it is interesting that in both the actual game and the alarm clock dialogue, Flowey’s edgy personality isn’t THAT consistent. I’m hoping that this comic will serve as the prologue to the Undertale AU that I’m working on, but before I can even get the story for that one started I would like to do this comic first.
The way Frisk is able to summon Flowey’s “soul” came from this part in another UT comic called Ask Fallen Royalty. I thought the way in that comic, Asriel summoning Chara’s soul by a pointing boop was cute… and really calls back to Kris when they do ACTs in Deltarune. I made a change for one of Flowey's dialouges. Initially he guessed that Frisk was gonna reset but that dosent make sense in context of the story. So its been changed to him simply asking what does Frisk want instead.

Paper Trail - Frequently Asked Questions

1) How often do you update Paper Trail?
It depends a lot on how long or complicated the next part is, how busy I am with work and other adult life things, and how my wrist is feeling. After severely injuring my drawing wrist in mid-2019, I am a lot more careful about how many hours I spend working on the comic, and try to have only set drawing hours on a daily basis so that I do not accidentally hurt myself. That said, I do try to get new parts out in a timely manner, and updates should ideally be every 10-14 days or so.
2) What tools/programs do you use to draw this comic?
I primarily draw in Photoshop CC, although I will also occasionally switch to Sketchbook Pro for some backgrounds, plus I do all lettering in Comic Life 3. Everything is done digitally.
3) Will [X/Y/Z character] appear in the comic?
While it is likely, I can’t guarantee it. You’ll just have to wait and see!
4) Will [X plot point] happen in the comic?
Any questions about future plot stuff that I deem too spoilery to answer will just get you this gif as a response:
5) Wait, how does this relate to canon?
Paper Trail sprung to mind not long after Deltarune chapter 1 was released, and was my initial interpretation of where the comic could go in future chapters. While I try to stick closely to canon, I know that a lot of it is up to interpretation, and I imagine that by now Paper Trail will be vastly different from the complete canon game. So for now, Paper Trail is a fan continuation of canon from the end of chapter one, and in the future it will just be an AU.
6) Did the Fun Gang fight Jevil in Paper Trail?
Yes, they did do the Jevil fight, and won via pacifist means after a number of tries.
7) What will you do if Toby releases the remaining chapters of Deltarune before you finish Paper Trail?
That’s a bridge I’ll cross when I get to it. In any case, I’ll try to finish Paper Trail before Toby finishes the remainder of Deltarune and wraps things up as they should be. :)
8) Wait! Are all the different Ralseis based on the SOUL traits??

9) What’s with Kris’s gender?
I try to stick close with canon, so in this comic Kris is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. Please try and do the same when sending me any asks about Kris! As a courtesy to followers who are sensitive about misgendering and pronouns, I tag any asks that refer to Kris as he/him or she/her with #pt misgender.
10) Do you ever livestream work on this comic?
I do! This is my Picarto channel. I usually stream about once a month on holidays for my country, in large blocks. I’ll announce art livestreams a day in advance, usually!
11) Can I do a voice dub for Paper Trail / translate it into another language?
Yes you can! If you do a dub or a translation, please 1) be sure to give proper credit for the comic and link back to the original version, and 2) PLEASE be sure to link me to your dub or translation so that I can add it to the masterpost! I like to keep all this stuff together, and it’s sad when people ask me about a dub or translation and then I never hear from them again!
12) Can I repost this comic to other sites, even with credit?
While I know Paper Trail gets linked or reposted to other places like Reddit and Funnyjunk, I’d rather that be limited on other sites. Please do not repost pages to places like DeviantART, Facebook, Tapas or Webtoon, even with credit, unless it’s an approved translation. I don’t get much traffic when it’s reposted as-is to other sites, and it’s already up on multiple social media platforms, so you have a few options for reading it!

Some final thoughts: I think out of all the comics I've done about Nib-Mettaton so far, this one is probably my most favorite. I had a lot of fun with this one despite it being kinda plotless. And I ended up learning a lot on how to do backgrounds for dark scenes, too. So all in all a good experience.
My personal favorite scene was the one with Malius, by the way. I couldn't resist the idea of Nib being put through squeaky hammer physical therapy.
