Atropa belladonna berries freshly picked from my poison garden. So sweet, so juicy, so deadly. I’ll be drying them and saving the seeds as belladonna seeds and live plants can be pricy.

Blake the Belladonna
So, there’s something I’ve been thinking about, which I’ve never seen anyone discuss in the FNDM, so I guess I need to say it. I’m going to talk about Blake, her name, and what it says about her. (And this applies mostly to her for the first few volumes, which is why I put up such an outdated image.)
Belladonna, like rose, is a flower. It has purple petals, and it also grows berries, which start green but ripen to a glossy black color. However, belladonna is also nicknamed “deadly nightshade.” Because, you see, while it looks appetizing, and even tastes sweet, it’s extremely toxic and dangerous, particularly toward children who will see it and take a bite without a second thought. The poison is wrapped in an appealing shell, but even if you want it, you’re better off without. Just like Blake.
Now, this isn’t true about Blake, but it’s how she sees herself. She means well, she wants friends and love and family, but her self-perception is that of a poisonous flower, poised to kill anyone who gets too close. She fully believes that anyone she cares for is in danger, something that proved true when Adam cut off her wife’s arm. When that happened, she blamed herself for denying her nature. “I’m toxic, and this is what happens when I pretend I’m not.” So, she ran home to the other Belladonnas, people who might be immune to her, or at least resistant. The only place she felt safe was in a garden with like flowers, and it took a lot for her to realize that Belladonna is just a name, that she’s not as dangerous as she thought.
Now, all this said, I only have one thing left: I am consistently surprised by the writing in this show, and the way that even the smallest things can fit so perfectly together. RWBY really feels like a series where nothing is meaningless, everything was put in for a reason, and I think that’s really cool.

Nightmarch 2023 - Prompt: Flavors
(format yoinked from zarla’s deltarune/addison relationship meme)
Night tea:
Dream: Earl grey lavender. Light and floral. Feels like there’s more to the flavor that’s just out of reach unless you really sit with it. +180HP
Goldie: Concord grape! Exactly how you expect it to taste. No surprises here, just juice. :D +120HP
Mare: Perfectly-aged, smooth wine. Just the right amount of plum sweetness to complement the bitterness of the alcohol. Even the smell intoxicates. +180HP
-------
Dream tea:
Night: Sun-ripened blueberries. Worth savoring. …Sometimes one of the sour berries gets through. No matter how often that happens, it’s always unexpected. +180HP
Goldie: Vanilla ice cream! As creamy as a milkshake. ^_^ Watch your teeth on the crunchy bits, though! D: +120HP
Mare: ??? Berry? There’s something there, but it’s hard to pinpoint what the flavor is, and trying more doesn’t help identification. +70HP
-------
Goldie tea:
Night: …Apples. A strange flavor, and one worth spending more time with. +90HP
Dream: Banana. Seemingly simple and childish, but a taste you can adjust to. …Perhaps nostalgic if you sit with it. +120HP
Mare: Attempted lemonade. Someone mistook salt for sugar and went hog wild with the sugar when they realized their mistake. Chuck the whole thing out and try again. +0HP
-------
Mare tea:
Night: Black coffee. Feels like it should be too bitter, but… appealing, in some strange way. An acquired taste. +180HP
Dream: Dark chocolate. Should be tasty, but isn’t. Get a handle on the flavor and then the plastic alcohol aftertaste hits. +70HP
Goldie: Root beer with hot pepper! It seems really fun, but it hurts to drink :( +0HP
