5 Book Recs Based on Your Favorite Nostalgic Halloween Movie!🎃
Tumblr media
I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite parts of October is watching all the classic spooky season movies I grew up with. It brings back all those fond memories of childhood fall festivities, Halloween costume planning, and the joy of filling up your candy bucket while trick-or-treating (even if you had to fight your mom about wearing a jacket with your costume because it was too cold). If you’re in the middle of your yearly Halloween movie binge or haven’t had time because of the hot new books dropping recently, here are some ghoulish book recommendations based on some of our favorite nostalgic Halloween movies!
If you like Hocus Pocus (1993), then you might like Dead Man’s Float
Tumblr media
While there might not be a big musical number led by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy in the middle of Dead Man’s Float, this story will surely leave you gasping for air. There is no doubt that Hocus Pocus is one of the most classic Halloween movies of all time, as the dubious Max unleashes the iconic Sanderson sisters to enact their revenge on Salem. Shawn Sarles' haunting YA horror novel follows this same hair-raising idea, except this time, a seemingly harmless prank unleashes a ghost with unfinished business and intent on finding its killer. If you’re in the mood for a more frightening version of the classic Hocus Pocus story, I recommend you start reading Dead Man’s Float now!
If you like Halloweentown (1998), then you might like Shadow Coven
Tumblr media
Halloweentown is well-known for its inclusion of literally all things Halloween and its empowering story of a young witch who will go to extreme lengths to save her family and the world from an evil power. Similarly, S. Isabelle’s second installment in The Witchery series, Shadow Coven, centers around a group of witches who must defeat magical and mundane threats to save themselves and their coven forever. While there might not be any friendly skeleton cab drivers, Shadow Coven includes some kick-butt witches just like Marnie and her family that will surely have you reaching for the spellbook this Halloween! Start reading now!
If you like Casper (1995), then you might like Sixteen Souls
Tumblr media
Casper the Friendly Ghost is a staple nostalgic character during the Halloween season. How could you not love the sweet and cute little ghost who falls for the girl who moves into the very mansion he’s haunting? Fans of the movie Casper will have no problem jumping into the spooky yet swoony YA debut Sixteen Souls by Rosie Talbot. This ghostly tale is about sixteen-year-old Charlie, who gets dragged into hunting down the cause behind the mysterious disappearances of several famous spirits by an irritating yet charming new ghost seer in town. Sixteen Souls is sure to give you chills, all while making your heart melt as Charlie must deal with his growing crush and work to save York’s spirits at the same time. Start reading Sixteen Souls now!
If you like Beetlejuice (1988), then you might like Beholder
Tumblr media
Whether you became a fan by watching the 1988 film with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder or the quirky modern-day musical, there is no denying that Beetlejuice has cemented itself as one of the most iconic ghost stories of all time. While Ryan La Sala’s Beholder is much more mysterious and sinister than the joke-filled dark humor of Beetlejuice that we’re used to, both stories explore a world where dark, evil powers must be stopped before they have the chance to take over fully—one just comes in a pin-striped suit with green hair. Start reading BEHOLDER!
If you like Scooby Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost (1999), then you might like At the Speed of Lies
Tumblr media
It goes without saying that any Scooby-Doo! film or episode is a year-round classic. But during the Halloween season especially, there is something even more thrilling about watching the gang from Mystery Inc. kick some monster butt. This undefeatable group of friends is no stranger to solving their town’s mysteries; still, Quinn Calvet from Cindy L. Otis’ At the Speed of Lies certainly wasn’t expecting to get swept into the mystifying chaos of her town’s latest disappearances. Fans of Scooby-Doo! will love this modern twist on mystery solving that we’ve all grown to love, thanks to Velma, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby. And while Quinn might be well on her way to becoming the “it girl” of The Whine, her town’s growing social media platform, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to the original it girls–The Hex Girls from Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost. Start reading At the Speed of Lies!

floating in the clouds in the river where are we going? dead man's float, they call it but i've never felt more alive i think what's making me float is the air in my lungs but i'm gasping now laughing to no end as the salty breeze whips your hair backwards the sakura are floating too all around us is the water even blue anymore? or is it simply translucent as the pastel pink merges in oh but my darling, i fear, buoyancy can only keep the off-key notes flowing for so long

they could never EVER neverrrrrr ever ever do this even ryan condal would never cede such an “iconic” setpiece & “memorable” dialogue and even if he wanted to HBO simply would not allow it but in my minds eye ideal hotd adaptation of the battle of the gods eye completely discards EVERYTHING supposedly recounted/editorialized in fire and blood no anime dialogue no ultra choreographed fight scene no cinematic beautiful shots of the dragons dancing no leaping from dragon to dragon its actually like incredibly fast and loud and incomprehensible to the audience just beasts colliding and ripping each other apart dirt and blood and horrific and disgusting and ultimately super SUPER pathetic ❤️ daemon and aemond dont get to make any epic last stands theres no glorious blaze out, no chilling last words, no grand narrative, in the end it really is just two men thudding to the bottom of a lake and getting eaten by fish. make the craziest climax in the world an anticlimax. ultimate antimoment

So is it just me, or does this upcoming horror movie "Night Swim" look like it's based on the scariest episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?
You know the one I mean:

From the article:
"Assistant Superintendent Bridgette Exman had a difficult task — How could she vet 42 books, several of which she hadn't read, to determine if they needed to be removed from Mason City's school libraries, as a new state law required?"
Did "read, or at least skim the books" come to mind? Did "check reviews of the book" come to mind? Did "ask colleagues who have read the book" come to mind?
No. Of course not.
Back to the article:
"Her conversations with colleagues across the state gave her an idea: Maybe AI could help."
"So the Mason City Community School District administrator took a list of 42 titles for review that the district had compiled from banned book lists around the U.S. and called up ChatGPT on her computer.
"Then she typed: 'Does [book] describe a sex act?' plugging in a book title, and waited for the answer."
No considerations of whether the "depictions of a sex act" were within a context that was appropriate, for example, in a sex education book, or in the case of Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, a non-graphic discussion of masturbation.
It's going to get worse from here.

Buy DEAD MAN’S FLOAT
Whatever you do, don’t swim alone. In his next YA horror, Indie bestselling author Shawn Sarles dives into the terrifying myth behind the dead man’s float.
Tumblr media
Sometimes the truth hurts. Sometimes it even kills.
Nine years ago, Sam watched her friend drown. The water, and the fact that Sam couldn’t save her, has haunted her ever since. But what she didn’t see that day was the hand that had reached out for her friend, wrenching her beneath the water.
Now, as Sam gets ready for varsity pre-season on the school swim team, she vows once again not to let the fear of the water bring her down into its depths. But when the upperclassmen take the girls to the abandoned neighborhood pool called the Graveyard for their yearly hazing ritual, a seemingly harmless prank will set off a catastrophic chain of events. It will unleash a spirit, a ghost that has unfinished business both in the pool and outside of it, intent on finding its killer.
On this team, they all have a secret. They all have a motive.
The truth can set them free, if it doesn't bury them first.

25. Do they have any habits or rituals that they do to soothe themselves? I.e. Playing with their hair, chewing their lip, fidgeting, etc.
Nailah's a nervous person by nature, so she has a handful of soothing techniques that she'll use.
One of her favorites is to conjure a small magicked flame in her hand and observing how it moves. By focusing on maintaining the spell, she forces her mind off of whatever is bothering her, and she can practice smaller aetheric control techniques. She'll move the spell around her hand, shift it's elemental alignment, shift it's polarity, change it's size, it's color, it's warmth... she gets a lot of use out of it as a teaching device as well, should the mood take her.
Should she be unable or unwilling to cast, she will fidget with one of her soul crystals, turning it over in her pocket and tracing the edges of it with her fingers. It's more to make sure that they're still there, as she relies on them quite a bit to fight, but the reassurance is comforting nevertheless. She'll fidget with her jewelry instead on the rare occasions she travels without her crystals.
If she has time, she will try to take a warm bath with nice smelling candles - barring that, she'll jump in to a nearby lake or stream. This is usually her last resort as she hates being indisposed for such a long time (and for, in her mind, such a silly reason), but it's one of the most effective calming things she can do.
