This week's line-up was big and involved, which is why this seems like an appropriate time to discuss burnout. We'll also look at exciting game news and reporting that came from other writers this week. But first, make some time for our...

Game of the Week

This week saw two new games rank among this site's top five. One is a powerful empathy-generator, a game with an important message and the power to change lives. The other is a Mega Man-like with poop jokes.

Sorry, Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story. I love you. I admire you. You affected me. You're the game people need to play. But what I want to play, all day, every day, is Mega Man, and between the two of you, Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe is decidedly more Mega Man-ish.

It's rude, it's crude, and it has the right attitude. Beneath the swearing, the dookie, the gore, and the funniest in-game nudity since the '80s, these are two action platformers that understand why the classics are still classic. Every inch of every stage is designed to punish any mistake and giggle at the resulting explosion of blood and guts, but it's never unfair. A perfect, untouched run of this game is possible. Your mistakes are your own. The jokes and references lack some of that same precision—a notable shortcoming for games based on a long-running comedy series—but the hits mostly make up for the misses. Come for the action; not the writing. For those who don't want all that jumping and shooting, or who aren't up for the heaviness of Another Lost Phone, consider taking a peek at my Animal Lover review. I'm not the demographic for visual novels about anime men and their bare chests, but I was won over by the light tone, lovable characters, and absurd mystery. I imagine those of you who actively seek romantic visual novels are going to love it.

I thought reviewing Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe in two parts was a smart move. It's a compilation of two games; it made sense to review each on its own. Covering both in one 200-word review wouldn't be fair. And I wanted to be fair to these games. I'd played and loved both of them already. This was my chance to go through them again analytically; to make sense of why they worked. That's not the same as playing a game for fun. It takes time. It takes a different kind of energy. That was the biggest motivation: I thought dividing the game across each day meant each day would require half the time and energy. Well, sure, it seems stupid now that I see it typed on a screen. I considered naming Anomalies Game of the Week. It was the only one that didn't demand anything from me.

That's not why we're here, though, is it? No, I want the games that make me think and feel and forget to eat lunch. Good or bad, I want to be challenged. I want an insight into an artist's ambitions and passions. If you do the same thing every day, the way you feel about doing the same thing is eventually going to change. I'm not burning out yet, but I know the relief I felt the one day this week when I discovered I was playing a non-game; that I could get through my daily obligation quickly. A feeling like that is a call to action. What action? Don't know yet, but I need to ease up a little.

New Toxic Crusaders Game!

The Toxic Avenger never should have been adapted into a children's cartoon, and that is why I love Toxic Crusaders. It's the only thing I like about Toxic Crusaders. Wait, no—that song was catchy. The ill-advised nature of its existence and the theme song. Well, if there's one thing the world's demanding now, in whatever year this is, it isn't a new Toxic Crusaders game. And if you haven't already started the video, now is the time. That is an aggressively stupid cover of the theme. I'm in love. It gets better! Who is responsible for this terrible decision? Why, none other than Retroware, developer of the Angry Video Game Nerd games! Could this be Toxie's first worthwhile appearance since 1984? (I've seen the sequels. No, thanks.) Oh! Oh! I just remembered the Toxic Crusaders toys. They were made by Playmates and they were mutants, so they were basically extra-gross Ninja Turtles toys. If this game gets toys, I'm sold.

wwdits tarot meta masterpost

Hi! This is a masterpost of all my WWDITS tarot meta posts along with a little FAQ about the project!

All 22 Major Arcana (and a brief post about the Minor Arcana) are now complete and on tumblr. Each card has gotten a character or theme from the show, and I've used the themes of the tarot to delve into my thoughts about each one.

I also talk about the meaning and imagery of each card, and how I would change that imagery to reflect the character I've assigned to it.

Basically, I designed a WWDITS tarot deck! But I did it by rambling about the characters for several thousand words. I hope you enjoy!

The Minor Arcana

What is this project?

Well, I'm a giant nerd about both tarot and What We Do In The Shadows, so why not combine the two? I studied the history, ethnography, and popular interpretations of tarot when I was in college and still do readings for fun. So I'm going to be approaching this from more of an academic POV than a spiritual one, but that's still fun, right? (Right??)

Anyway, I love writing overly complicated meta posts about WWDITS, too, so that's how I've decided to go about this. Each post is about a different card from the Major Arcana, and will contain what I've chosen to represent it, my reasoning, some thoughts about the character/object in question, and ideas about card imagery.

Some questions I've been asked:

Are you making a deck?

No, I am primarily a writer, scholar, and overthinker. I'm not good at visual art. lmao

Can I make a deck based on these ideas?

Once every month or two I open up my askbox to tarot readings. So if you keep an eye out, yes. They're just for fun, though.

I think that's everything. I have already thought about this a ridiculous amount, so I already know how I wish to assign all the cards. I plan on posting one of these every few days until I'm through with the Major Arcana, then I'll probably just do a brief overview of the Minor Arcana. Alex is known as the grumpy one, rarely smiling (so rare that it became a meme of sorts on social media of to comment when he did in 2022). This may be changing in 2023 with a change to McLaren after six years at Andretti. New season, new team, new Alex? Time will tell. He still isn't the most social of people, preferring people people (friends and family) over people (everyone else). He has a soft spot for child fans, often going out of his way to interact with them.

His conservative upbringing shows on occasion, particularly on his podcast where he and good friend James Hinchcliffe discuss the latest racing news and whatever else comes into their heads. The number of times James has said "No, Alex. We've talked about this." when Alex says something that could be considered concerning for a rational person to say (often related to those conservative views he was raised with) is numerous. Much credit to Mr. Hinchcliffe for having the patience to educate his friend.

Alex extensively researches (perhaps obsessively) what catches his interest, be it smoking meats, the PH of his pool, or weird flavored soda cocktails. He is generous to his closest friends, recently planning a "not Bachelor party" weekend for a friend. He is something of perfectionist and a (self-admitted) clean freak. He enjoys betting on sporting events, although now must do his betting through friends as he allowed James to parental lock the betting app on his phone.

Ghosts of the Vieux Carre: A Self-Guided Walking Tour (1999) by Bentley Tours

New Orleans' French Quarter, also known as the "Vieux Carre," is the oldest part of the city--so, naturally, there are quite a few ghosts to be had. While Ghosts of the Vieux Carre is not our only book with a guided ghost tour (see our post on Florida's Daytona Ghost Walk), it is unique in that it's accompanied by a cassette tape so that people can listen along as they take the tour.

It also includes a pocket map and glossary of New Orleans lingo for those unfamiliar with the city.

Read Ghosts of the Vieux Carre to learn about, as the book's summary describes:

Lana’s Unreleased Songs in ‘Chronological’ Order

This is not based on Lana’s reality or intention, just the story she tells in her music. This does not include Ave Maria, Boom Like That, Roll With Me, Money Hunny or most of the EPs/demotapes

Younger Years

This is Lana’s teenage years, due to the mentions of school and her age. The story I gleaned from this was she was a wild girl at school, hanging around with the wrong crowd (Boarding School, Children of the Bad Revolution, Driving in Cars With Boys, Making Out, Motel 6, Butterflies Part 2). She always felt like an outcast and had dreams of being famous (Elvis (inspiration), Hollywood, Pin Up Galore, Playground, You’re Gonna Love Me, Jesus is My Boyfriend).

She meets a guy who is a little bit bad for her but she connects with despite the toxic nature of their relationship (Me and My Boyfriend, Run Motorcycle, I Don’t Wanna Go, I Learned How To Make Love From the Movies (another ‘black leather moonlight), Ridin’, Joshy and I, Stoplite De-Lite, Queen of Hearts).

However, they’re passionately into each other (Baby Blue Love, BBM Baby, Jealous Girl, Puppy Love) and she dreams of them running away together (On Our Way, Prom Song Gone Wrong, Super Movie, Take Me to Paris, 1949, Every Man Gets His Wish).

They go on to break-up after multiple ‘breaks’ (Butterflies Part 1), when Lana’s boyfriend decides he wants to hit the road himself (Your Band is All the Rage). Lana recognises they were too young and bad for each other, and just wanted to leave together (Afraid, Damn You).

Waitressing/Trailer Parks/Jim

Lana becomes a waitress and goes on to meet Jim (All Smiles, Caught You Boy, Meet Me in the Pale Moonlight, You Can Be the Boss), a rich, law-breaking unkind lover (Crooked Cop, Hundred Dollar Bill). Their relationship is passionate and loving (4th of July, Behind Closed Doors, Bellevue, Bentley, Betty Boop Boop, My Song 57, Coca Colla, Daddy Issues, Dynamite, Hawaiin Tropic, Heartshaped Chevrolet, I Was in a Bad Way, Let My Hair Down, Match Made in Heaven, Oooh Baby, Push Me Down, Put Your Lips Together, Queen of Disaster, Bikini Gold) but also difficult (Maha Maha, My Best Days, Put the Radio On, Resistance, Roses, Trees, Valley of the Dolls, Cult Leader (metaphor)).

Jim also had a darker influence on Lana and she admired his criminal ways (Hot Hot Hot, Never Let Me Go (Nancy and Sid)). They lived in a trailer park together (Backfire, Fordham Road, Television Heaven, Trash Magic) and slowly they fell more into crime.

They started a lifestyle of criminal activity (Criminals Run the World, Come When You Call Me America (”gun to gun”), Daytona Meth, Hit and Run, Live or Die, Playing Dangerous (arson), Scarface) and Lana developed a darker persona (Dangerous Girl, Hangin’ Around, Serene Queen, Summer of Sam). Jim soon goes to prison (Gangsta Boy, TV in Black and White). Lana eventually realises that Jim’s love for her is too flawed, and she metaphorically kills his influence on her (Kinda Outta Luck).

Getting Famous/Stripping

Lana becomes a stripper and seeks to get noticed. She spends her days at the diner and her nights at the club (Us Against the World, Dance For Money, Ghetto Baby (stilettos, loose link), Go Go Dancer, Midnite Dancer Girlfriend, Moie Je Joue, Party Girl).

Lana eventually starts to get noticed for this (C U L8r Alligator, Disco) as well as her singing (Marilyn). Though she does still miss the life she had with Jim (Methamphetamines), she meets interesting new people (Strangelove, Big Bad Wolf, Wolf T-Shirt) and people who can give her a chance in the business (Axl Rose Husband (”record executive), Ben) - including famous men she admires (Is It Wrong?), accidentally becoming known in a scandal (Other Woman, True Love On the Side).

Famous

Lana’s fame grows quickly, and she is known as the wild-child star (Be My Daddy, Breaking My Heart, Heavy Hitter, Dreamgirl, Dum Dum, Paradise, Serial Killer, So Legit, St Tropez). She starts up a PR relationship (Fake Diamond) but meets another singer like her, who slows down her crazy behaviour (Because of You). They are a perfect pair, both rich, talented and about the famous lifestyle (Beautiful Player, Delicious, Back to tha Basics). He lives too fast, too dangerously (Live Forever, Velvet Crowbar, Lift Your Eyes) but she sticks by him. They have a whirlwind engagement to be married.

She is heartbroken when she hears rumours about him (In The Sun, Catch and Release (”page three”, gossip)). She is devastated and angered by the revelations of his unfaithfulness (Hollywood’s Dead, Noir, She’s Not Me, Tired of Singing the Blues, Your Girl) but ultimately is strong (Break My Fall). Most of all, she’s heartbroken about the marriage that would never be (Fine China*).

Lana sees the downfall of fame steadily (Last Girl on Earth) and as she becomes introspective (On & On & On) misses her past (I Talk to Jesus, Greenwich, Wayamaya, You and Me).

She spends time alone, finding herself and her freedom (Angels Forever Forever Angels, Wild One) but soon meets someone new (Hey You). She falls in love (JFK) despite remembering the past with Jim and her other lovers (French Restaurant). She is mature and safe in her relationship, and allows it to unfold (Life is Beautiful, Spin Me Round, Starry Eyed, Unidentified Flying Bill, When I’m With You, Yes to Heaven).

*This song could have fit in to various places.

This was just for fun and was all theoretical; again, I’m not claiming any of this is Lana’s intention but just a fictional narrative based on the beautiful stories she tells

U.S. will deploy F-35 aircraft carrier and fighter attack group near Israel

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced on Sunday that he ordered the attack group of aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford to sail to the Eastern Mediterranean to prepare to help Israel after the recent Hamas attack, which resulted in more than 1,000 victims on both sides.

Just a few hours ago, more than 250 music lovers lost their lives at the Supernova festival, held in the southern desert of Israel, when Palestinian militants invaded the festival and opened fire in a surprise attack. A siren sounded at dawn, warning of the arrival of rockets, quickly followed by shots, according to eyewitnesses.

On October 9, the Israeli military reported that Hamas held hostages in Gaza and that the conflict resulted in more than 700 victims, with more than 2,150 injured. In addition, 3,284 rockets were fired from Gaza.

Secretary Austin said he spoke with Israel's Defense Minister Gallant to express U.S. support for the people of Israel and to receive updates on Israel's efforts to restore security and protection after the Hamas attack.

The USS Gerald R. Ford, the Navy's newest and most advanced aircraft carrier, will lead this mission, accompanied by cruisers and destroyers, including the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG60) and the Arleigh-Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116), USS Ramage (DDG 61), USS Carney (DDG 64) and USS Roosevelt (DDG 80). They will be deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, near Israel.

The aircraft carrier attack group, based in Norfolk, Virginia, has already been in the Mediterranean last week, conducting naval exercises with Italy in the Ionian Sea. This deployment marks the first complete deployment of the aircraft carrier.

In addition to the repositioning of the aircraft carrier attack group, Secretary Austin plans to increase the presence of U.S. Air Force squadrons with F-35 Joint Strike Fighters stealth aircraft, as well as F-15, F-16 and A-10 squadrons in the region, as recommended by the secretary in the statement.

Secretary Austin reiterated the United States' unwavering support for Israel's right to self-defense and provided updates on U.S. actions in response to the situation. He emphasized that these measures aim to strengthen the U.S. military stance in the region to improve regional deterrence efforts.

He also informed Minister Gallant that the United States is sending additional equipment and resources, including ammunition, to reach Israel in the coming days.

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact for the next few days and weeks.

Hamas is recognized by the U.S. Department of State as a foreign terrorist organization and governs Gaza, a territory that the State Department considers occupied by Israel.
