an alternate universe in which Merlin eventually loses it after waiting for Arthur for so long.
He watched Camelot fall. He waited and waited for so many centuries. He witnessed many disasters rampaged the world, yet Arthur was still in his slumber. He started doubting if Arthur would wake up at all, and that was the start his ruin.
Immortality eventually destroyed every trace of the kind boy he once was. Madness and loneliness consumed him. The guilts he had carried for thousand of years took him apart. Eventually, the only thing that was left in his monstrously powerful and everlasting body was pain and glimpses of memories of Arthur.
And finally, Arthur was back as the ‘hour of need’ finally arrived, as the world needed him to save it from the destruction that was once Merlin.

STOP STOP EVERYRHING
i do not know if this has been said but i am going to say it bc fuck it almost knocked me off my feet when i thought of it
merlin waiting patiently for arthur for YEARS. mourning him for longer than he knew him. watching everyone he knew in camelot die and himself not age a day. watching the stone of the castle begin to crack, the wood begin to rot, the streets begin to empty. camelot has fallen. he ventures out but not far in case arthur returns. he experiences decades pass by him in a flash, still nothing. humanity advances and advances, yet they are also their undoing. they build themselves up just to tear themselves down a moment later. years and years and years and years and years pass, still nothing. the great dragons words echo in his head and he holds them close in hope, arthur will rise again. a day in spring, merlin catches a whiff of something he can’t place but he’s hit with a wave of nostalgia. it’s not until he’s lying in bed later that day that he remembers it’s what arthur used to smell like. not long after that, he tries to recall arthur’s laugh, but the memory is mute. and fuzzy. why is it fuzzy? stop focusing on the laugh and focus on his face…what did he look like again? oh god. no focus on something small. his eye color. what color were his eyes? blue…right? or were they green?
merlin forgetting the pieces of the puzzle that make up arthur, he can’t remember what he smelled like, what he looked like, what his laugh sounded like, he can’t even recall the way he screamed his name everyday when he needed something. merlin’s loosing arthur again. how long has it been? too long, too long and arthur still isn’t back. the dragon said he’d be back. he remembers that. he’s been repeating the words in his head since they were spoken to him long ago. every morning when he woke, every night before he slept, whenever the world around him seemed out to get him. he’s coming back. arthur’s coming back. why isn’t he back? what had that damn dragon said? he always talked in riddles but merlin had thought his words were clear for the first time since he’d known him. what had he said?
when albion’s need is greatest, arthur will rise again.
he’ll rise again. arthur will be back. and they’ll fight a great evil like they used to, side by side, two sides of the same coin, arthur and merlin together at last. he just has to wait for such a great evil. a great evil that would constitute arthur’s return. merlin’s lived many, many years. he’s seen much evil. arthur never returned then. something bigger and badder then. something worse that anything he could imagine…would it be immoral to instigate the evil to come to pass? (merlin’s tries to recall arthur’s secret smile when merlin made a face at him across the room or whispered something in his ear when visiting noble and royals were acting like fools and comes up empty.) to hell with morals. to hell with the damn dragon. to hell with it all. merlin’s been alive for centuries. arthur’s been asleep for centuries. they’ve been waiting for each other for centuries. merlin’s sick of it. to hell with it all. arthur needs a great evil? he’ll give him a great evil.

Random sorcerer: You will pay for what you have done King Arthur Pendragon. *raises hands*
Merlin: *rolls eyes* Let me guess, Uther killed your mum or dad or sister or something and now you want to get revenge by killing his son even though Uther's dead.
Random sorcerer: Insolence! How dare you speak to your future King like an equal.
Merlin: You? Equal?? To me??? *hysteric laughter*
Arthur: *growls* Merlin...
Merlin: *wipes tears from his eyes*
Arthur: Untie my manservant sorcerer. He has no part in this. If you let him go I will come quietly.
Random sorcerer: I may have considered your offer where it not for his casual impertinence. *turns to Merlin* Don't you understand boy? I am the great Alwyn, weilder of the power of the triple goddess! *grins*
Merlin: *yawns* Been there done that. What else you got?
Arthur: Merlin... Shut. Up.
Alwyn: *splutters* I CAN COMMAND THE TIDES, THE EARTH, THE SKY WITH THE BORROWED POWER OF THE GODS! HOW DAR-
Merlin: How dare I? *smirks* Ever met one of your Gods in real life? *eyes flash gold and the ropes binding Arthur and Merlin fall away*
How dare I? HOW DARE YOU BORROW WHAT IS MINE?
Arthur: *looks at Merlin to see molten gold spread from his iris and engulf the sclara*
Merlin: How dare I?!! *starts laughing again, a cold detached sound that rings through the air*
Alwyn: *stumbles back* I- I-. Who are you?
Merlin: *Walks towards Alwyn and crouches nose to nose with him* You may borrow your power from the Gods, but guess what? Ỉ̛̬̲̖̳͔͍̮̳ͥ͂ ̘̠͔̗̩ͫ͗͂ͤ͠a̦͍̝̮̣̲ͫ̔͜m̸͉̦̈ͅ ͍̤̜̩̟̞̱̮ͫ̾ͫ̚͠ȍ͓͖͕̹̎̎͢ǹ͓̠̻̜̗͉̫ͬ͝e͓̬͉͈ͤͩ̐ͥ͜.

Emrys observed Arthur Pendragon from afar for several years and was fascinated.
How is he so golden and adored?
How does he still have faith in the people around him after being betrayed by everyone around him except his sister?
How does he manage to get back up after each defeat?
Emrys is curious, which is already incredible in itself since he has lived for so long that nothing now makes him curious anymore.
And Arthur is also about to be betrayed by his uncle Agravaine and perhaps it will be the last time Arthur will be able to get up after a defeat.
Emrys does not intend for that to happen.
Arthur now has Emrys and Morgana to watch his back. He has Emrys and Morgana allying themselves with each other and killing and interrogating anyone who tries to harm a single hair on Arthur's head.
Arthur finally succeeds in building the Camelot he has always dreamed of.
Arthur is the Golden King.
Emrys and Morgana make sure this never changes.

Merthur Fanfiction writers

For months I've been working on a fanfiction idea and I fell madly in love with it. But the thing is- I am not a good writer. And this idea has so much potential and deserves much better. I'll write down a little bit about the story.
Idea:
- The Battle of Camlan with a different outcome. Morgana wins and captures Arthur. And Merlin? He does something stupid (nothing new there hahaha)
- Not knowing what to do, Merlin casts a spell that makes everyone forget about him, including Arthur and Morgana.
- The Main Plot: Merlin is working as the High Reeve, Morganas right hand (dark merlin). Arthur is Morganas prisoner until the day Merlin requests to keep Arthur as his. (Morgana does not want to kill Arthur, she wants him to see her winning)
- What no one knows, Merlin is not as evil as he let's everyone believe. There's a secret he's hiding and soon, it'll be out.
Anyway, there is SO MUCH more going on. But I don't want to spoil everything right now. Now the thing is, I can't or won't write this idea. That's why I'm looking for someone who'd be willing to write it for me! I have the plot idea and you the talent of writing hahah. We would work on this story together. You write and I help you with the plot and stuff and when you're stuck, I can write a bit too but I'm not a pro in writing. I saw a post mentioning that they don’t think darker characterizations of Merlin make sense. I think it totally does for a number of reasons. But I got curious and looked it up.
Merlin’s total kill count is about 45 people.
Arthur’s is about 53.
He has almost as many confirmed kills as Arthur, swordsman and person in charge of Camelot’s army. That is an alarming rate for someone whose official job is servant and not remotely combat related 😂
(And he’s holding back, we know he’s holding back)

Watching "The killing kind" feels like watching a dark Merlin - Future AU, where he desperately tries to get himself attached to a new purpose and messes in things he shouldn't be involved in. (I'm at episode 2, so no clue how it ends.)
