Phoenix Wings DabiHawks Zine Buyers Please Read and Pass this on!!!
Since it's apparently been emailed to buyers to update their address, check your emails! Mods are not responding on discord very well and have not updated their Twitter or tumblr @phoenixwingszine but they will be shipping bundles imminently. They have not announced it publicly but did announce on discord that they have stopped attempting to print a physical zine and will just ship merchandise and stretch goals. They do say that they will refund for the retail price but not tax.
Obviously contributors and buyers are upset, angry, confused, etc. This zine has been nothing but delays, confusion, and what seemed like internal drama. If you bought this zine, check your email to see about address updates. I believe Rivkae seems to have sent the emails so look for that name, some people on Twitter assumed it might have been spam.
Take care, everyone.

“You smoke?”
“What?”
“Do you smoke?” Touya opens up his jacket and taps a finger on the off-white box of cigarettes that’s sitting nestled in the inner pocket. The flight attendant opens her mouth to say something and it’s Touya’s turn to level her with a less than impressed stare. He’s thankful that she tilts her head down and goes back to whatever she’s doing on the computer screen.
“Come with me away from here and I’ll let you have one.”
“Why?”
“Does it sound more fun than standing here shouting until you’re blue in the face, champ?”
Takami throws a forlorn look to the window where it looks like a holiday card. His face shrivels up before he sighs so heavily Touya thinks his very soul goes with it. It’s apparently enough to get him moving as Takami pulls his coat tighter around himself and follows Touya. He leads them to the same little yard that he’s frequented often in the past six hours. The sign says ”no smoking”, but Touya is convinced that no one here really cares, not in the early hours of Christmas Day, at least. He sits down on the metal bench and opens his coat again as Takami sits beside him.
Takami looks at Touya who’s extending an open carton towards him. Golden eyes flick between the box and Touya several times before he reaches out.
“To answer your question, no, I don’t smoke usually.” Touya offers a wane smile before flicking open the silver zippo lighter and igniting the tip of the cigarette. It seems to do the trick because Takami looks loads more relaxed even on just the first drag.
“Well, there’s a time for everything.”
Takami lets out a slightly hysteric laugh. “Yeah, there is. Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it.”
“Nice lighter, a Christmas gift?”
“What? This old thing?” Touya turns it around to look at it with a wry smile. “It was a gift from my old man for when I passed the bar.”
Takami blinks at him, pulling the cigarette away as he coughs.
“You’re an attorney, too?”
“What? Oh!” Touya breaks out laughing, choking on his drag too. By the time he’s recovered, Takami looks confused and concerned. “No, I– I was supposed to. The old man gave it to me as a downpayment of sorts. Dropped out halfway through law school. I guess you are?”
Takami nods his head as he takes another drag.
“I work for a huge firm in Shizuoka, trying to make partner before I’m thirty.”
“Showoff.” Touya knocks his shoulder against Takami’s only for the man to knock it back. “How’s that going for you?”
Takami’s smile turns crooked in a way Touya thinks that, with the cigarette and the slightly disheveled hair now, flatters him far too well. “If I crawl any further up my boss’ asshole, I’ll be able to start puppeteering him.”
Touya bursts into laughter a second time that Takami eventually dissolves into with him. They snort and choke on their cigarettes for a second, Touya’s eyes positively streaming by the time that he recovers.
“Small world, actually, my old man’s got a firm in Kyoto. Not the biggest firm, but pretty damn big. He was set on making me a partner, but I was too ‘ditzy’ and ‘not-driven enough’ for him. He’s set his sights on my youngest brother, but that’s because he’s the perfect son.”
“Ooo, do I sense some bitterness there?”
Touya raises his free hand to make a rude gesture that Takami rolls his eyes at.
“He’s an alright kid, little snot-nosed for my taste, but he means well. Isn’t his fault that he’s the old man’s favorite. I used to kind of resent him for it when we were little, even tried to kill him once or twice, but–” Touya shrugs and looks back to see Takami’s eyes wide.
“What? Don’t you have siblings?”
“I, well, no. No, I don’t. I was in fostercare after my father was arrested and my mother skipped out on me. I had fostersiblings, but I doubt it’s the same.”
“Damn, I’m sorry to hear that. That’s rough.”
“What? Oh! No!” Takami waves him off. “It’s fine, I’ve adjusted. Mostly.”
“Mostly.”
They settle into a companionable silence as the pair of them work on their cigarettes, taking turns blowing pillars of grey smoke into the little outdoor space they’ve found. The only reason they’re not becoming holiday features themselves is the awning above them, but even then flecks of powdered snow are clinging to Touya’s jacket and Takami’s very long eyelashes.
“So I’ve gotta ask, what’s got you so eager to go back?”
“What?”
Touya shrugs. “I’m making conversation. We’re both locked here for the foreseeable future and it’s either talk to you or keep playing games on my phone until it eventually dies and at least the first one comes with a view.”
There’s that hysterical laugh again as Takami wipes his face with his hand. He’s silent for a second and Touya thinks he’s overstepped a boundary, but then he realizes Takami’s shoulders are shaking in silent laughter.
“Another time, another place, I’d be all over that.” Takami uses the cigarette to gesture to Touya and Touya only laughs.
“Yeah? Why not here and now?”
“It’s… complicated.”
