So quick post since I just woke up- but this is a psa to everyone really (but especially to people outside Wales) to be careful about how you express support for Welsh language preservation. I've censored the name of the reblogger here (this is a screenshot of a reblog of my post about the petition to use only Ynys Môn for the island instead of Anglesey) and I will say, while I (and many others in Wales) appreciate the support from overseas, its important not to accidentally use white nationalist slogans in doing so!
No animosity directed at the commenter, I feel like it was an innocent mistake. But "Keep Wales Welsh" is a white nationalist slogan and we don't do that here.
I can see where the mistake has happened. In English there are no separate words for Welsh (language) and Welsh (person) while there is in Welsh- 'Cymreig' means Welsh in the sense of being of Wales (e.g. 'llaeth Cymreig' is Welsh milk), while 'Cymraeg' means Welsh in the sense of the Welsh language (e.g. 'Ydych chi'n siarad Cymraeg?' means do you speak Welsh?). The commenter probably intended to mean 'Keep Wales Welsh' in the sense of 'Keep Wales Welsh language'. However, white nationalists use that slogan to mean 'Keep Wales ethnically* Welsh'. Which is a big nono around here and on this blog. We don't do that here.
[* There is no such thing as ethnically Welsh either, but it's a line trotted out by white nationalists in Wales to justify their ethnonationalism.]
There are many non-white Welsh people and also many non-white Welsh speakers. Being Welsh and the ability to speak Welsh are not in any way connected to race or ethnicity. Welsh nationalism ≠ white nationalism - there's no justification for using racist, white nationalist arguments to secure Welsh independence. An independent Wales should be a diverse independent Wales - an independent Wales inclusive of all races, nationalities, disabilities, sexualities and genders.
Annibyniaeth Wrthffasgiaid.

welsh remus guide pt.2
Second Lesson
Wales vs Cymru
Wales is the English term for the country, deriving from an old Germanic term with a meaning along the lines of “foreigner” or “other”. Cymru is the Welsh term for the country, meaning something along the lines of “countrymen”.
Not to be confused with Cymry which is pronounced exactly the same but means “welsh people”.
To put in a phrase - The Cymry live in Cymru. Welsh - Cymraeg
The Welsh Language - Yr Iaith Gymraeg
Welsh Man/Person - Cymro
Welsh Woman - Cymraes
Cymro is technically masculine but can serve as a gender neutral term if you don’t want to use the plural Cymry. Welsh, like Spanish and many others, is quite gendered.
A Welsh speaking Welsh person might refer to themselves, especially if they’re first language, as a “Cymry Cymraeg” which sounds silly in English as “Welsh Welsh” lmao. If my Mam were to tell me “Arwen is a Cymry Cymraeg” I would know that Arwen is a Welsh speaker. Alternatively you say the more literal “Siaradwr Cymraeg” (Welsh speaker) or “Dysgwr Cymraeg” (Welsh learner).
Side note: These days, there’s a lot of discussion over how labels influence identity. So there’s lots of debates over going by Cymru in official capacities and such, however dw you are not committing any mistakes or hate crimes by using “Wales” or “Welsh”. You are however, definitely an asshole if you criticise a Welsh person’s decision to personally only use “Cymru” or “Cymraeg”.
Next up is a quick guide to the alphabet/sounds before finally, the main meal: slang and terms of endearment
Note: I am not the collective consciousness of every Welsh person. My experience is not universal - especially when it comes to North Walian things. This is just meant to serve as a general guide. Hope this helps and good luck with your writing!

Note
is cymry a neutral version of cymro/cymraes?
Cymry is technically the plural of cymro/cymraes, but in the absence of a neutral singular it'll suffice!
Can't think of any other vowel which'd work well at the end - cymrw, cymra, cymre, cymrei all sound a bit off to my ears.

Why do people remember that England fucked over Ireland and Scotland but comparatively less remember Wales exists?
(Not to mention Cornwall, though that isn’t a “country” in the same way Wales and Scotland are. Ireland is whole other business)
Just saw someone talking about “Celtic” identities (NOT Gaelic btw) and only talking about Scotland and Ireland and as a Cymraes (Welsh woman) it annoyed me more than it should have (not to mention Cornish, Manx and Breton exclusion)
I mean I don’t like it when people call characters “Celtic” anyway because it feels like saying “white and pale but still exotic” (looking at you Dr Strange — btw Tilda Swinton is actually descended from Norman invaders) and because a “Celtic” person isn’t really a thing with so much intermarriage and migration over the centuries
Sorry just a ramble I guess

A poem about being Welsh// cerdd am fod yng Nghymraeg 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
“Roedd fy nhad ddim yn glowr.
Roedd fy nhad-cu ddim yn glowr.
Dwi ddim wedi tyfu lan yn y dyffrynoedd
Gyda y cysylltiad i pyllau glo ac linellau
Piced.
Ond dydy hyn ddim yn becso.
Y dicter cynhenid o fod yng Nghymraeg
Yn byw yn fy croen, yn fy esgyrn, mewn fy
Nghalon.
Peth uchel yw e, rhywbeth sydd yn sgrechian.
Y 'Hen Wlad fy Nhadau'.
Mae'r dicter hon yn byw dros
Genedlaethau ac fydd yn byw am
Blynyddoedd eto. Mae'n byw mewn
Yn y lle yn fy mhol sydd yn moen
Anadlu tân.
'Collasant ei'n gwaed'.
Cymryd fy ngwaed, cymryd ef ac llenwi dy
Afonau gydag ef.
Ac gwaed y phobol.”
“My father was not a miner.
My grandfather was not a miner.
I did not grow up in the valleys
With the connection to the coal pits
and picket lines.
But this does not matter.
The inherent anger of being Welsh
Lives in my skin, in my bones, in my
Heart.
It’s a loud thing. Something that
Screams.
‘The Land of my Fathers’.
This anger lives through
Generations and will live for
Years to come. It lives in
A place in my belly that
Breathes fire.
‘Their lifeblood let fall’.
Take my blood, take it and fill
The rivers with it.
And the blood of the people sings.”
