Ooh, so Curlfeather's gonna be a dark forest demon? Have you put any thoughts down on what her Land Mar might be?
She will be! I can't imagine any way for the arc to wrap up where she isn't in the Dark Forest. If they pull something insane like vacuuming her up into heaven because having nuance in Hell would be too interesting, I will personally, viciously undo that.
They would have to do something WILD in order for me to abide canon. So, say it with me lads, While I Do Not Rewrite Arcs Until They Are Done... the forecast's saying that we're going to get an expansion to the Dark Forest.
(And if they dont want me having demon!curlfeather drown splashtail they better have a craaazy iconic death in mind for him.)
I haven't thought of her Land Mar quite yet but I actually have two ideas;
Idea 1: The obvious choice, the Path of Dogs.
...but I'm actually unsure if I'm going to go with it. It makes sense this is her life's "worst moment" as she loses her chance at leadership, her life, and dies a horrible death. But. She died SAVING her daughter.
In a way, that was her proudest moment. What burns the most about her death was that she was out-done. I'm still unsure yet if Splashtail sent those dogs, or if they were supernatural, or both, but in any case, she's PROUD of her final choice.
So I'm unsure. She was still killed by dogs.
Idea 2: The Kin Camp
So... I'm probably going to be making Curlfeather a bit older. She will probably be an apprentice during the Battle of the True Eclipse, because I want her to be a young warrior during AVoS.
BB!Curlfeather is the daughter of Reedwhisker. Her mother, Duskfur, had always had a bit of a crush on Reedwhisker and acted on it after he became deputy following Sedgewhisker's retirement. Reedwhisker said yes, and took care of Duskfur as a mate, but...
He never really got over Hawkfrost, and he was an extremely distant father. Curlpaw grew up in the shadow of her grandmother and the troubled legacy she has, all of the pressure of her ambitious family with none of the warmth.
Mistystar bludgeoned Leopardstar to death, and this was revealed when the dead leader came back from her grave in Hell itself for revenge. Swansong died killing this demon a second time. Stonefur stood up for justice at the Bonehill. Bluestar gave RiverClan its strongest warriors to become the leader of her own Clan.
The only positive thought Curlfeather has of her father is that he is a loyal RiverClan warrior. So loyal that he was never really there for her. Then, The Kin happened.
Captured, starved, and beaten, just like his uncle Stonefur, Darktail forced Reedwhisker to take an oath of loyalty to his cult. His mockery of a Clan. In Curlfeather's eyes, Reedwhisker was such a weak, worthless welp that he obeyed.
So it would be a fascinating Land Mar for her. One of the more "tame," non-magical ones in the Dark Forest. Nothing more than an abandoned camp, the empty bramble cage where the prisoners were once kept, and the fading scent of fear.

a starless clan protag headshots
i've been really invested in the current arc, and after reading thunder i was excited to set aside some time to test out my designs for the protagonists! these aren't necessarily my final designs for them.
recently i've been wanting to take my art in a bit more of an exaggerated cartoony direction, inspired by watching a bunch of early 2000s cartoons lately (can you tell which one inspired these particular drawings? XD). warriors might be a bit of a weird muse for that, but i can't turn down the opportunity to draw some cats!
nightheart's basically an off-black version of my firestar with hair. i still need to actually draw my firestar design, but i know what i want, so i based him off of that. the hair is just because i thought it'd be funny. i'm not too sure about his eye marking though; i give most of firestar's kin some kind of stripe coming from their eye, but i might change how nightheart's looks. something to experiment more with!
frostpaw is based on what i have in mind for curlfeather - again, haven't drawn curlfeather, but i have a pretty decent idea of what she looks like. lots of little curls incorporated throughout her design. she's also all gray to me but still a colorpoint, and has three little "freckles" on the left side of her face. i'm contemplating whether or not i want to give her a TNR ear notch in the final design.
sunbeam is probably the wildest of these three, at least in my opinion, and the one i'm probably not going to change too much because i like that about her. i don't remember exactly what inspired me, but i came up with the idea of her having a single eye with dark sclera months ago and it's stuck in my mind since. idk, maybe i just thought it would make the diamond marking pop a bit? she also only has eyelashes on the eye with yellow sclera. her back marking is a sun and the white beneath it represents a ray of sunlight.
i also had extra space so i made a doodle making fun of sunbeam and the traveling cats eating a corndog from sky. the fact that nightheart brought it up again in thunder to be sad about how he's away from her cracked me up. warrior cats eating human food and being astonished is really funny to me.

I actually REALLY like ASC's villain lineup????? All of the villains have been genuinely super fun to read about: Splashtail being an evil little man, Curlfeather's twist which ACTUALLY caught me off guard, and Berryheart, who is SO fun to read about, and her backstory involving the kin is SO interesting. idk. I love Karen cat with all my heart she's so awful and it's so fucking funny. every inch of screentime she gets is a blessing to me. I want to dissect all their brains under a microscope.
They feel like a return to inner-clan political drama and it's refreshing (and as much as I love random outside forces like the dark forest and darktail and?? deforestation ig?? its always nice to see the clan cats stirring their OWN pot)
This arc started off a bit weak (especially with Nightheart, the pelt color shit was Stupid) but I've kinda warmed up to it ngl. If this was almost any other arc then the main conflict would've already been wrapped up by book 3 (cough cough AVOS), but I actually kinda like how this one is taking its time to build things up. Overall I dont mind it

the darkness in riverclan is being executed so well. i never would've guessed that curlfeather was the one who masterminded reedwhisker's murder, but here we are! i do have to say, i'm saddened for curlfeather's kits. at only a year old, they're now orphaned with their primary caretaker sentenced to an eternity in the dark forest.
but as with most villains with next to nonexistent backstories, i wonder how curlfeather and splashtail got to a place where they full on orchestrated the murder of a longtime clan deputy.
i'll start with splashtail first. this tom is ridiculously young at only a year and 3 moons old. the youngest villain in the series i can think of is hawkfrost, and he died at 2.5 years of age. it typically takes tragedy after tragedy and/or failure after failure for a cat to stray so far from the warrior code that they're practically a rogue with a warrior's name. havenpelt and sneezecloud are seemingly good cats, so how is it that their son's actions led to the destabilization of his entire clan?
i want to guess that it's because of how splashtail and fognose grew up. they were still kits when ashfur's spirit first took control of bramblestar's body, so a majority of their life was spent growing up in a time of significant unrest and a silent starclan. they grew up hearing whispers of rebellion, and when splashpaw became an apprentice, he was assigned softpelt as his mentor; who very soon after was killed in a battle instigated by ashfur. and through all of this, mistystar sided with the imposter not knowing his real identity. i'd like to guess that the combination of no starclan + constant bloodshed/losing his mentor + weak/ineffective leadership is what led splashtail to believe he'd make for better leadership rather than reedwhisker. fognose has to be involved in some way. she was on the same patrol as reedwhisker, podlight, curlfeather, and splashtail, and if she wasn't in on the plan, i'd doubt they would've allowed her to live for long.
curlfeather next. the first thing i really want to focus on is her mate, jayclaw. four books into the arc and we have no details as to how he died except that frostpaw seemingly predicted his death when she was still a very young kit. throughout curlfeather's appearances in the books since her debut as a kit in mistystar's omen, she's seemed like a very sweet cat. what happened between the events of last arc and jayclaw's death that could've turned her over to such treachery?
did ineffective leadership on mistystar and/or reedwhisker's part lead to jayclaw's death? was curlfeather already plotting her takeover of riverclan's leadership and suspected that jayclaw would get in her way? is it possible that she was the cat who killed jayclaw, or orchestrated his death in some way?
also, curlfeather's plans call something else into question. if she conspired with splashtail to target reedwhisker, that means one of two things.
curlfeather was confident that reedwhisker's death would break mistystar. he is her sole surviving kit, and the extinguishing of her bloodline with his death would've driven her into a state very similar to what we saw with her mother, bluestar, towards the end of her life. was she hoping to control mistystar and use the aging leader as riverclan's figurehead, making the decisions for the clan until she ultimately died?
mistystar's death was planned from the beginning. it was duskfur who exacerbated the argument that led to mistystar's death, and duskfur is curlfeather and podlight's mother. did their entire family plan out mistystar AND reedwhisker's death sp that curlfeather could ascend to leadership without pushback from her clanmates?
another thing to consider about curlfeather is that when darktail attacked riverclan with his kin, she was one of the warriors who were taken hostage, starved, and forced to swear an oath of loyalty. her and duskfur sought help from windclan, revealed in onestar's confession. could this traumatic aspect of her past have also spurned her towards seizing leadership for herself?
This is just some really excellent analysis. I’m definitely going to be referring back to this during my theorising
As for the Mistystar death options I’m thinking option 1 since I feel that Mistystar getting so stressed she dies of heart failure is too unpredictable of a scheme, but breaking her with the death of the son could leave her so much more open to manipulation and not questioning any “signs” Frostpaw recieves
Also one thing I can’t help but wonder. Did Curlfeather have children just for her scheme? Or was she at least pregnant before she came up with her plan? But if this conspiracy is truly rooted in the events of TBC in any way then maybe the kits were born first.

This tricky girl recently got a new description for her build in Thunder - she's described as slender with small inward-curling ear tufts and a narrow forehead. Given that I previously designed her as a stocky she-cat with a broad head and massive ear tufts, she definitely needed a makeover. XD
You can find the reverse side of her design here - along with a glimpse of her true personality.
For her physical description, Curlfeather is described as a slender, thick-furred she-cat with soft fur, a narrow forehead, and small inward-curling feathery tufts on the ends of her small, sharp ears. She's still on the shorter side, though a little taller than her old design, with as lithe, slender build and thick, soft fur. Everything about her, her light build, her soft pelt, and her warm, motherly expression make her seem warm and inviting - but as we learned in Thunder, it's all a façade to hide her darker ambitions. I kept her scars basically the same, she's still a warrior who's lived through a lot of battles and has earned the respect of her Clan. The bite marks on her front paw are from being captured by Darktail's kin, as are a couple of the other scars dotting her body.
For her pattern, Curlfeather is described as a pale brown she-cat with amber eyes. I kept her colors and pattern basically the exact same as before, only tweaking her nose, scar, and ear colors to fit the coat a little better. She's a colorpoint like her daughter. ^^
Overall, it took a lot of tweaking to get her to look how I wanted, but I'm really happy with how she turned out. ^^

I kinda just started this one on an impulse, but I ended up spending a fair bit of time on it, and now I'm rather proud of it.  Anyway, after reading the newest Warriors book River, I was struck by how each protagonist had a unique and highly focused-on relationship with their mother. I decided to try and capture the essence of each of those relationships juxtaposing each other in an image together. So here are the protagonists of A Starless Clan with their mothers!
On the left, we have Sunbeam and Berryheart. We didn't get to see as much of these two as the others, since Berryheart didn't really appear until the middle of the book, but I was really intrigued by what we did see. Berryheart is described as being a very strict mother who taught her kits to be good, loyal, rule-following warriors of ShadowClan. She clearly became that way after how disasterously wrong it went last time she allowed and apparently agreed with her daughter's rule-breaking tendencies (I say agree with because Berryheart was one of the few warirors to join the Kin before the rest of ShadowClan did). But now that the rules are changing, Berryheart is unhappy with the rules she's dedicated herself to being disregarded and thrown away, and towards the end of River, she was hinting that she intends to remind the Clans why those rules were important in the first place. Sunbeam is a quietly loyal warrior who follows the rules, but even she can see that her mother is going too far, and seems highly uncomfortable with the way her mother is talking about reminding the Clans of the rules.
In the middle, we have Frostpaw and Curlfeather. Unlike the other two strained mother-kit relationships, Curlfeather and Frostpaw seem to be incredibly close and loving to each other. That's not the say there aren't problems - Curlfeather is apparently a bit of a helicopter parent, both coddling Frostpaw and holding her up to standards Frostpaw isn't sure she can reach just yet. But this seems less important to Frostpaw than her closeness with her mother, as she mentions several times how glad she is how have Curlfeather's love and support. But something much darker is lurking over this mother-daughter relationship. Curlfeather's role in everything that has happened in RiverClan recently is unclear, but given that her last words were spent warning her daughter to trust no cat, it's clear she knows something, and now that she is gone, Frostpaw is left to face that "something" alone without the cat who had supported her most, and who had unclear intentions and an unclear level of involvement in the current mess in the Clan.
On the right, we have Nightheart and Sparkpelt. Nightheart wants to be close with his mother, and it seems Sparkpelt wants to be close to him too, but neither of them really know how to act around each other or talk to each other. Sparkpelt was unable to be emotionally involved in her kits' early lives because of her post-partum depression and grief over Larksong and Flickerkit. It wasn't her fault that she wasn't able to be involved, and it's not Nightheart's fault that he was deeply affected by that separation and feels that sense of abandonment and lack of closeness with his kin. It's just a terrible situation that happened. But as a result, Sparkpelt and Nightheart have that feeling of distance between them that neither quite knows how to breach, and Nightheart has a mix of resentment towards his mother for not being there for him and a desire for her love and approval.
I had a lot of fun drawing this one.  I think I'm happiest with how the shading and texture turned out on Berryheart and Sunbeam, but I love how the background and poses turned out for Curl and Frost (the other two backgrounds were way lazier :P). Berryheart is pulling Sunbeam in closer to hear her conspiring against the changes to the code while Sunbeam is thoroughly uncomfortable, Curlfeather is grooming Frostpaw while the shadow of the darkness within RiverClan (and possibly Curl herself), and Curl's imminent demise, loom over them, and Spark and Night are looking wistfully at each other while also turned away from each other, longing for that connection but unable to erase the awkwardness and resentment between them.

A Starless Clan Predictions - Shadow
Tumblr media
I finished reading Shadow a couple of days ago, my guys, and while it’s relevant, I wanna share my predictions! What did you think of Shadow?  Spoilers and speculations for A Starless Clan, book 3 "Shadow", below!
PRE-READING PREDICTIONS 1. Fognose, Podlight, and Splashtail slipped away to kill Reedwhisker, and Curlfeather had heavy suspicions about Reedwhisker’s disappearance when he didn’t return with them. Especially after they found his body, and this caused her to rethink how Mistystar died. And she was killed because she was too close to the truth of what happened.  2. Mothwing may have been involved in the RiverClan conspiracy in the beginning but never meant for cats to die. But now she’s forced into silence and to answer to the demands of the real culprits. 3. Nightheart is going to leave ThunderClan, and may even clan-jump from ShadowClan to RiverClan. But he’s probably not gonna be happy anywhere he goes, because he's his own problem.  4. Nightheart and Sunbeam will not end up together, or they’ll try, but it won’t work out. Or at least not until Nightheart goes through his arc and matures. But not until then. 5. Frostpaw won’t have any romance arcs. If she does, it’ll be one-sided and won’t work out.
MID-READING PREDICTIONS 1. Someone is going to attempt to kill Icewing, but the plot will fail.  (It can still happen... Especially if Tigerstar appoints her leader of RC) 2. Spalshtail and Duskfur are most upset about Frostpaw becoming a warrior apprentice because they need someone with a connection to Starclan for their plot to work. (Eeyup. Fuck u Splashtail. stay away from frost baby) 3. Whistlepaw may be attacked on the moor when talking to Frostpaw (Welp. I was almost right. Oop) POST-READING PREDICTIONS 1. I think Mothwing will become Mothstar at some point. I think she'd be a refreshing leader to see. And the reason why this idea didn’t cross Frostpaw’s mind before when looking for a new leader, is because Mothwing is already a medicine cat and she isn't exactly StarClan's biggest fan. 2. When Squirrelflight gets her nine lives, she'll try and appoint Lionblaze as her deputy, but ThunderClan won't stand for that shit. Too many of Firestar's kin have been in power over TC, and they need to shake things up. I think this was even brought up in A Broken Code, and about Lionblaze specifically. 3. SkyClan will attack ShadowClan on behalf of RiverClan, and I feel like Leafstar's going to lose a life, and it's gonna upset everyone because it could have been avoided. How many lives does she have left...? Imagine she actually just dies for the final time and it's Tigerstar's fault. I tried to stick to more realistic post-reading predictions writing this, though there's so many ideas I could TALK AND TALK about, BUT they're pretty far out there wafting in fanfic territory and probably won't happen smh

(Spoilers for A Starless Clan)
Duskfur from A Starless Clan. Duskfur is from RiverClan. She is the mother of Curlfeather and Podlight and was the mentor to three apprentices: Copperpaw, Shadepelt and Dappletuft. She is protective of her clan after her imprisonment under The Kin and fights with Mistystar over the code changes. But that hard exterior falls apart when her only daughter is killed by dogs and confides in her granddaughter and Curlfeather’s daughter: Frostpaw. She is still alive as of Shadow. (Info gained from the wiki, I have not read A Starless Clan)
Wow it’s the possibly murderer but no one knows yet!!! I haven’t actually read the newest books unfortunately but I have seen 1000 posts and videos talking about them so I know a few things! Tbh the mystery is very vague so anyone could be murder to me lmao.
Anyways, reason behind her design is I was originally going to make her pinker because of a sky at dusk but it was dark in my room and I was tired and ended up making her just a light brown. There’s not a lot of reason behind her design I just thought it looked pretty. A lot of rounded markings though like clouds! Also I think her eyes are blue but I made them green!
That’s all I have to say, hope she murders Tigerstar because that would be funny.
Commissions are open! Dm me for more info!

since reedwhisker is dead doesn't that mean appledusk kin is finally gone?
I-
huh
I guess so?
at least out of the Clans cause, you know, Stormfur and his kids, but they're not part of the Clans
granted, I've headcanoned that Duskfur is a rogue who joined RiverClan to be with Reedwhisker and that Reed is Curlfeather and Podlight's dad [meaning Frost's grandpa]
but that's not canon so
ig yeah
he's the last of Appledusk's Clan kin

Gay
Warrior Cats fandom is genuinely so terminally online when it comes to shipping. Who the fuck cares if these characters have never met? Who cares if they don't have chemistry? Who cares if one is centuries older than the other? They are grown adults. Stop infantilizing them and misusing "pedophilia." Who cares if it's a straight ship? Who cares if it’s gay? Who cares if it's ruining your "headcanons"? Let people do what they want. The entire point of shipping is to literally have fun, to explore dynamics, to create, and to explore another person's perspective. It is not that serious, and some of you really need to go outside and touch the grass.
I will now ship Nightcloud with the moonlight of the sisters. I will ship Nightcloud and Brackenfur(?) (Because of that one PMV by Ursiday lol) Or better yet, I’ll ship curlfeather and appledusk simply because she killed his kin. I’ll ship Nightdusk simply because they’re my favorite characters. I will Ship Reedshine and Bloomheart. I will ship Tigerstar x Blackstar (😭😭) I will ship Mapleshade and Thistleclaw. Or Maple x Rainflower. If the idea of shipping these somehow offends you, you might want to step away from the internet and focus on real-world issues, my guy. It's not hurting you. I promise you, you will live.

I will cry (in a good way) if the theme of the arc is “the love was there. it didnt change anything. it didnt save anyone. there were just too many forces against it. but it still matters that the love was there”
I REALLY hope that I can do something like that. Again, BB really tries to stay in line with where canon goes and follow it while fixing its themes, but like...
With all the fixes I've done for TBC and below, where the last arc left off on Shadowsight giving up something he'd always wanted (his lightning-based connection to StarClan, blasting it back at Ashfur to hold him down) and the sacrifice of Bristlefrost to knock the holy beast out of heaven... something feels really cool about being able to follow that up with an arc that's very melancholic and painful.
Heartstar doing something DRASTIC to try and stop another Clan from falling apart, compelled to get more violent to keep her claws over it, driven by the fear of The Kin repeating itself and the fury of her dead child
Dovewing watching her sister take power in ThunderClan, knowing things are going to get VERY frustrating
Ivypool herself vowing she's not going to use this new status for personal gain... but then she kinda Does, unable to put down a DESPERATION to reconnect to a sister who doesn't want to see her
I kinda hope I can also find a way to explore Bumblestripe's feelings here, too. He JUSt had a whole journey in Ferncloud's Parting, and he comes back and LOOK! A perfect opportunity to justify how much you HATE Heartstar and Dovewing and all of ShadowClan! It would be SO easy to let your heart grow bitter again, wouldn't it? What will you decide, Bumblestripe?
Lightleap struggling with her failure to enter the Dark Forest, feelings of uselessness and helplessness, losing her best friend
Berryheart herself radicalizing a portion of ShadowClan, as Heartstar tries to prevent another Clan from falling apart, her own is pulling at its stitches.
Squirrelflight having saved Bramblestar from the Dark Forest, NO CAT LEFT BEHIND, only for him to show his true colors AGAIN and try to get into petty drama with her, her sympathy evaporating in an instant
Just. Everything with Sparkpelt and her kids. She ISN'T Firekin in BB-- she chose the names Finch and Flame WITH and FOR her mate Larksong.
Nightheart having a new name foisted on him and making himself believe it was a choice-- and then Bramblestar is dethroned, Sunbeam is telling him how much she loves his family, there's a new journey for glory in front of him, and... there's so many things to think about that he just doesn't.
And then he comes home to find they're OUT of chances to give him. And he's traveled far and is able to FINALLY internalize... he blew it. Didn't recognize or appreciate what he had, when he had it
Bramblestar isn't the big strong cool grandpa leader he thought he was, he's a disgraced elder, and he has to wonder... how much of this HATE for his family was Nightheart's own? How much was the Impostor? How much was Bramblestar? How much was his own inability to self-reflect?
Frostpaw's entire family turning on itself
Finding out that Curlfeather was behind the plot that killed her own father, Reedwhisker.
That Podlight, her funny sillyman uncle, was ALSO in on this the whole time, plus her dear friend Splashtail.
Still just a kid, left to agonize over how much of it was LOVE and how much of it was MANIPULATION. Where one ended and where the other began.
The love is there. The love was always there-- even when you didn't know it. It was strong, and it was beautiful, but it's NOT a fix-all. It isn't the hero that will save you. It isn't the medicine to fix you. It isn't the shield that will protect you. Love is mortal.
And when it dies, it dies in pieces. Like a fire in its ashes and its embers. The same love in one heart will burn forever, and for others, its cinders are quickly doused.
A painful arc, of betrayals, broken promises, last chances blown to rubble, and good intentions paving the way to hell.

A starless clan? More like warrior cats : mommy issues
bro I'm sensing a heckin THEME when it comes to the protags mothers (I know Berryheart wasn't mentioned yet but I feel like the reason Sunbeam follows the code so avidly is bc Berryheart was like "hey you had a sister that is uh dead and she didn't follow the warrior code so don't be like her") and the theme is "hey look at all the different ways people parent their children and their methods might not be 100% right despite what people say" not saying they're bad parents but how their styling of parenting affected them idk I feel like I'm smart but I'm probably wrong
mommy issues anon here I just want to make sure that's it's clear that especially for Sparkpelt, I'm not saying she's a bad parent. Like another anon said, she went through a lot emotionally and I like the way they took her character. She's one of my favorites. It could just be that Sparkpelt and Curlfeather's ways of parenting after a death are there to contrast between Flamepaw and Frostpaw, who already have contrasting names and Sunbeam could just have a normal life no parental problems
~~~
no no, you're definitely clear don't worry! and yes i was thinking the same thing! i was thinking how both flame and frost lost their fathers as kits and how their mothers had completely different reactions to that trauma and grief, sparkpelt becoming overwhelmingly depressed and developing postpartum depression while curlfeather became a helicopter parent
and the fact that they're the first two chapters, back to back, and it's repeated over and over again, really driven into our brains that both apprentices were significantly impacted by their fathers' deaths and their mothers' potential parenting styles being completely changed and molded from their grief
frostpaw is constantly feeling belittled and like she has no autonomy because she feels smothered by her mother not treating her like her age, making her feel insecure like she's not going to be good enough for her clan and what everyone expects from her, since she's expected to be as good of a medicine cat as willowshine and literally replace her in her role as being the sole connection between starclan and her clan, while flamepaw feels distant and ostracized by his mother while also being inseparable from her because of his kin being the leader and deputy of the clan and firestar ALSO being his kin, as well as him being named after him, even though he doesn't even look like him (and is in fact the opposite color of him hmm), leading flamepaw to not feel good enough in his ability to be a warrior and to live up to his clan's expectations of him and so he takes risks and tries to show off to prove himself, which only leads to his failure
now doesn't that also sound like something else another major character was doing in another chapter of the preview?
and then of course the ice-fire foil which i still love and WISH frostpaw was a white cat to contrast flamepaw's black fur, just how like i think dovewing should'v been white to contrast to hollyleaf's black fur but the erins can't be PERFECT with their symbolism now can they
anyway what i think sunbeam is going to be is gonna be its own post cause i don't want this post longer than it already is lol
