RECIPE: Irish Goodbye (from Cure: New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix 'Em by Neal Bodenheimer and Emily Timberlake)
Matt Lofink describes this as a dry, not-too-sweet, “very crushable” whiskey sour. Fennel and peach is an unexpected but delicious flavor pairing that works amazingly well with the spice notes of the whiskey.
¾ ounce (22.5 ml) fresh lemon juice
1 medium egg white
1. ounces (45 ml) Tullamore D.E.W. Irish whiskey
¼ ounce (7.5 ml) Giffard crème de pêche liqueur
¼ ounce (7.5 ml) Fennel Syrup (recipe follows)
4 mint leaves
10 drops Peychaud’s bitters, for garnish
Mint sprig, for garnish
Combine the lemon juice and egg white in a shaker tin without ice and dry-shake for 30 seconds. Add the whiskey, pêche liqueur, fennel syrup, and mint leaves to the shaker tin, fill the shaker with ice, and shake until chilled. Double-strain into a double old-fashioned glass filled with ice. Dot the bitters on the surface of the drink, then use a toothpick or cocktail straw to swirl the bitters in an attractive pattern. Garnish with the mint sprig and serve.
RECIPE: Fennel Syrup
Makes about 2 cups (480 ml)
2 tablespoons fennel seeds
2 cups (480 ml) hot (190 to 200°F/88 to 93°C) water
2 cups (400 g) white sugar
In a small skillet over medium heat, toast the fennel seeds until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a bowl, add the water, and infuse until the water is cool. Add the sugar, stir until dissolved, then fine-strain and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks.

On September 10th we venerate Elevated Ancestor, Voodoo Queen of Louisiana, & Saint, Marie Catherine Laveau on her 222nd birthday 🎉
[for our Hoodoos of the Vodou Pantheon]
Tumblr media
Marie Catherine Laveau was a dedicated Hoodoo, healer, herbalist, & midwife who, "traveled the streets [of New Orleans] like she owned them", as the most infamous Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.
Marie C. Laveau I was born a "Free Mulatto" in today's French Quarter in what was then, New France); to a mother & grandmother who were both born into slavery & later freed via freedom papers. It is believed that she grew up in the St. Ann Street cottage of her maternal grandmother.
She married Jacques Santiago-Paris, a "Quadroon" "Free Man of Color", who fled as a refugee from Saint-Domingue, Haiti from the Haitian Revolution in the former French colony . After his passing, she became known as "The Widow Paris". She then worked as a hairdresser catering to White families & later entered a domestic partnership with a French nobleman his death. She excelled at obtaining inside information on her wealthy patrons by instilling fear in their servants whom she either paid or cured of mysterious ailments. Although she never abandoned her Catholic roots, she became increasingly interested in her mother’s African traditional beliefs. The Widow Paris learned her craft from a ‘Voodoo doctor’ known variously as Doctor John or John Bayou.
Marie C. Laveau I is said to have intiated into Voodoo career sometime in the 1820s. She's believed to be descended from a long line of Voodoo Priestesses, all bearing her same name. She was also a lifelong devout Catholic. It didn’t take long before Marie C. Laveau I dominated New Orleans Voodoo culture & society before claiming title of Queen. She was the 3rd Voodoo Queen of NOLA - after Queen Sanité Dédé & Queen Marie Salopé. During her decades tenure, she was the premier beacon of hope and service to customers seeking private consultations - to aid in matters such as family disputes, health, finances, etc, created/sold gris gris, perforemed exorcisms. While her daughter Marie II was known for her more theatrical displays of public events, Marie C. Laveau I was less flamboyant in her persona. She conducted her work in 3 primary locations throughout the city: her home on St. Ann Street, Congo Square, & at Lake Pontchartrain. Despite one account of a challenge to her authority in 1850, Marie C. Laveau I maintained her leadership & influence.
The Queen died peacefully in her sleep in her ole cottage home on St. Ann Street. Her funeral was conducted according to the rite of the Catholic Church & in the absence of any Voodoo rites. To her Voodoo followers, she's venerated as a Folk Saint. In² addition to her Priesthood in Voodoo and title of Queen, she is also remembered for her community activism; visiting prisoners, providing lessons to women of the community, & doing ritual work for those in need.
She is generally believed to have been buried in plot 347, the Glapion family crypt in Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1, New Orleans. As of March 1st, 2015, there is no longer public access to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Entry with a tour guide is required due to continued vandalism & tomb raiding.
We pour libations & give her💐 today as we celebrate her for her love for & service to the people, through poverty, misfortune, bondage, & beyond.
Offering suggestions: flowers + libations at her grave, catholic hymns, holy water, gold rings/bracelets, money
‼️Note: offering suggestions are just that & strictly for veneration purposes only. Never attempt to conjure up any spirit or entity without proper divination/Mediumship counsel.‼️

hello!! I just rewatched Daybreakers and now I can't stop thinking about what Louis would do if he had the chanto to get a cure from vampirism...
what debates would he have with himself? how would this affect his relationship with Lestat and the others?
(I'm throwing this at you for you to elaborate, I love you <3
Hey!
*hugs* 💕
Hmmmm, difficult. :) (Oh, yeah, Daybreakers, I remember!)
I think... it depends on which "Louis" we're talking about, and in which "phase".
Because Louis' journey over the books is as complicated one as Lestat's (and I'm quite sure it will be over the show as well), and... I do think his stance on a cure would change. And it depends heavily on what the cure entails, too.
So, for the sake of the argument let's assume it's "cure for vampirism aka Louis becoming mortal again", with no extra powers, no body switching necessary, no magic. Just the transformative properties of the Dark Gift gone.
The Louis after leaving NOLA, pre Claudia's death, still very much in the Rite of Passage might have taken it, I think. Book and show, though the show made clear that Louis knows Lestat didn't die then, so that complicates things.
But he suffers from what he is, and what he must do to survive. He does not like the price he has to pay. The Dark Gift didn't free him in the way Lestat promised, how could it, and the killing is of course something that tears at his soul.
If he would have been offered a cure, I think he would have taken it and tried to make Claudia take it, too. (That might have failed, but that is another discussion^^) I think he would have seen it as a second chance. Show Louis, with the knowledge of Lestat surviving, might even have gone back and tried to give it to Lestat... and, all things considered, I'm not 100% sure Lestat wouldn't have taken it then, either, in that situation. He tried to become mortal again in later books after all.
The Louis post Claudia's death... no. Unlikely. He was "dead" then, for a long while, and he went on because he could not not. I think he saw it as a form or punishment, mixed with vicious survivor's guilt, and the sheer trauma of Paris. Show Louis called Claudia his redemption, and ... I think a cure would have been seen as a redemption as well and as such... clashing with what happened to Claudia, if that makes sense.
Dubai Louis, later books Louis (TtotBT)... does not want the cure. He wants release. I think Louis is in a state of chronic depression then, likening his state to a purgatorial one in the books, from which not even becoming mortal would free them. (Which then culminates in the Merrick events.)
"This is purgatory we're in, you and I. All we can be is thankful that it isn't actually hell."
And then... after Merrick.... in the "resentment phase" I think he would have been tempted. Because he is not "able" to die then anymore, not by conventional means at least. And that in and by itself is a very daunting prospect of course, and the cure would have been another get-out-of-jail card he could have taken...
But I think Louis, deep, deep down... didn't want to die then anymore. He'd been there, done that, did not go into the light.
He stayed. And so, despite being tempted, and viciously so, and maybe even having gone to beg Lestat (or maybe even Armand) to come and argue with them to be mortal with him once more... I think he would not have taken it. But I can see them arguing about it, viciously. The temptation would have been there, but too much had happened then already.
And in the end... around the Prince Lestat era and Blood Communion?
No. Then, not anymore. He has made his peace then, has found his family, his place. Has found himself. He would not wish to lose all that.
So... it depends, I think. :)
Despite everything Louis likes the power and his life and the status it affords him, too. He just, for the longest time, does not like the price. And he needs to come to terms with the realities of it, because he... chose it.
He was not forced into it, and that weighs heavily on him, especially with the more sobering realizations of it not being the freedom he hoped for or was promised. And the realities of the relationships not being what he expected them to be, either.
Louis' choice of his state of being weighs into his choice of taking the cure... and in a way his conscience is too... pure, too clean for him to take it, if that makes sense. He will choose the suffering (until he has accepted), because he chose this life.
Saint Louis.
Or to quote a (bitingly rakish) Lestat here:
"But then he is so good at grieving! He wears woe as others wear velvet; sorrow flatters him like the light of candles; tears become him like jewels."
PS: I didn't delve too deep into "debates with himself" here, because... that's fanfic level of delving, too long for tumblr, imho :))) I'm tempted to write it all out though, so... maybe^^.

Hello Bux,
Next bingo numbers for your concert ask.
15. who is an artist you haven’t seen that you’d love to?
25. which concert did you feel the most exhausted after?
26 (edited). do you often get concert hangovers or post concert depression? how do you deal with it?
(stay strong, fashion week may have started, but it will also end.)
Who is an artist you haven’t seen that you’d love to?
Seaway! The best Canadian pop punk band nobody’s heard of.
Which concert did you feel the most exhausted after?
Definitely Alabama 3! A week earlier I had been hospitalized with food poisoning, but it was potentially my only chance to see one of my favorite bands perform one of my favorite records in full, so I was undeterred. I flew a red-eye into Heathrow after work that Friday, queued for the gig, saw the gig, went out partying with a bunch of Brits who took a clueless Yank under their wing and ensured I got back to my hotel safely, crashed the night, and flew back to JFK Sunday morning. I have never been so exhausted in my life. But it was worth it!
Do you often get concert hangovers or post concert depression? how do you deal with it?
Totally. Nothing brings me more joy than following the Whigs around on a tour circuit, so I’m always a little bummed out afterward. Last year I did Milwaukee/Orlando/Chicago/NOLA/DC/Philly/Brooklyn, and Chicago and New Orleans are two of my favorite cities in the world to be. It was the first AW tour after COVID paralyzed the industry, so to have that part of my life back was a spiritual homecoming.
The best cure for the post-gig blues is to see another gig :) I try to hit up a small hometown show when I get back from a Tourcation to ease the comedown.

Boo's Dollhouse
Chapter 3: Boo
Tumblr media
Boo was a young 32, tired of working a 9-5 and dealing with low budget sugar daddies who could only pay a bill or two. She wandered through the old New Orleans occult shop searching for a woman called Muerte. According to a trusted source, Muerte was a old and powerful cajan witch who could grant any wish, cure any sickness, and even stop the signs of aging.
Boo flew over quickly as soon as she had the time. She had a special request, but the shop seemed to be unattended except for a healthy Himalayan cat that slinked through aisles of random old cluttered junk. Who'd want to buy this shit she did not know. It looked like 20 years of a shitty yard sale. The fat cat watched her from a distance and went into the backroom giving her the absolute creeps. She was only mildly superstitious but cats in a creepy shop, no ma'am... Still, Boo followed and found in that backroom a bathroom and tiny storage along with another exit leading to outside. The funky cat walked out into sticky summer afternoon heat so Boo did too, finding a pretty young girl no older than 22 lounging outside in a chair drinking what looked to be fresh squeezed lemonade. She rolled her eyes like Boo was bothering her on her short break.
Tumblr media
"What do you want?"
"Muerte?"
"Depends. Who sent you?"
This was the OLD powerful cajun witch? She looked fresh off of breast milk.
"Nola," the name rolled like butter off Boo's tongue.
Muerte stared at her and gestured for her to sit in the empty seat. "What are we talking about?"
Boo took a breath and produced a picture of the 71 year old Larry Buschall. "I need to marry him."
Muerte spit her lemonade in disgust.
"Girl not like that, he's rich," Boo explained. "But he's married to a white bitch. I need that trick dead and buried so I can move in."
"Ooh.."
"And when he's dead it'll all be mine. But I need his children out the picture for that to happen and the only way that can happen is if he signs a revised will that cuts them out."
"Okaay," Muerte followed.
"His ass is stubborn. I'd end up killing him before he could. I need full control over Larry so I can make him do what I need him to do."
"Now this is up my alley," Muerte smiled wickedly. She reached for the photo and instantly dropped it, a stunned look flashing briefly before understanding set in. "This man's soul already is owned by a powerful demon."
"What dat mean," Boo's brows shot up.
"Ol' Larry millions ain't come from building."
Boo kissed her teeth, resigned. "I knew it was something. Nigga can't even spell let alone make a million!"
"Wait," Muerte picked up the photo. "I didn't say you couldn't get the money.. Let me keep this. Come back tomorrow, I'll have an answer."
Boo did what Muerte said and returned to the shop the next day, propping her elbows on an encased row of old supposedly cursed objects. There were a few wandering customers if you could call them that. Muerte leaned in.
"How bad do you want this money."
"Can I get it without dying or selling my own soul?"
"There are worse things," Muerte stared. "Larry Buschall has a deal. He lives rich and free to 88. The demon that owns his contract, when he comes to collect, will make Larry his slave for eternity."
"And Larry knows this?"
"He suggested it."
Boo's eyes widened, but Muerte continued.
"There's a catch to his contract.. He must live on to 88, but it doesn't have to be in this plane... Take this," she slipped a tied cheesecloth bundle and a folded sheet of paper in Boo's hand. She whispered. "You have to make the move to meet him. Kill his wife. Make him consume your blood. Say these words and when he's yours to control, boil this satchel in water. Have him drink it just before bed. Read those words as he sleeps as long as it takes for him to leave his body. He'll still be alive.. until his 88th birthday."
Boo stood wondering how she'd get close to him. She had to play this smart.
"One last thing," Muerte smiled. "Tell Little Nola.. come back and see me sometime. Her great aunt.. hasn't seen her in over a year."
Boo looked her in the eye deciding it was best not to even ask. She wasn't stupid, she passed the message but she left the shop and shortly after, Louisiana. She went back to Texas where she could track the multi-millionaire and his bitch.. through media and socialite circles.
Research told Boo that the 58 year old plastic bodied blonde Karen Buschall enjoyed shopping with the top brands, eating at Masraff's, getting her hair done every other week, and visiting the gym a lot to keep her slim figure. Boo prowled these places, always ready and fantasizing methods and escapes. She'd kill Karen and get away with it. The thoughts were constant. It would be a smooth murder.
The moment Karen walked into Boo’s sight sitting on the exercise bike ahead with her hydroflask and air pods, Boo played it cool casually continuing her run on the treadmill. She watched subtly, pressed hair wrapped away as the woman did her time on the bike and moved to another machine. Boo moved through her circuit as well only looking up again when she noticed the woman wasn't on any machine, she was gone. A quick wipedown of her own machine and a search of the premises revealed Karen's location.. she was playing racquetball alone.
Boo circled the block and went back to the racquetball room, knocking to be let in. Karen immediately looked inconvenienced.
"What do you want it's occupied! Move along!"
Boo pushed her way in.
"It's a public room. You can play me or leave."
"You get out now before I have you removed," Karen threatened stepping closer but Boo picked up a racket holding it firm in her hand ready to knock a bitch head clean off. "Now you jungle freak," Karen pointed angrily at the door.
"Make me." Boo grabbed a ball and hit it against the wall, starting a game with herself. The ball whizzed by Karen's head.
Karen boiled over nearly screaming on her way to find someone who would kick out this negro girl. It made Boo laugh. She didn't wanna play, she had a darker motive. She waited to leave, dropped the racket, and went a different way to catch Karen alone and slipping.
Karen led an employee to the racquetball room but it was empty. The employee left her there and she stood with her hands angrily on her hips. That's when Boo made her presence known and purposely walked by so the woman would follow.
Boo was followed into the changing rooms where Karen thought she had her cornered. She walked right up on Boo as she was heading to a shower and got a knife swiped across her throat from one end to the other.
She fell onto the shower floor and couldn't talk or scream for help because she was gurgling on her own blood. Boo hadn't left a strand of evidence. She was like a ghost that had snuck into the gym and left as smoothly. She turned on the water and shut the curtain, escaping. No one would discover the body for some time.
She let the situation breathe for a few months. The murder was unsolved. The law couldn't do much and Larry was still Larry. The only ones who cared about his wife's death were her family members and there was nothing they could do.
Boo knuckled up and did some heavy scheming to schedule a business meeting with Larry himself. She had a vial of her own blood and needed him in a room alone. She couldn't swing that, but what she could do was infiltrate his business as a custodian. It was her way in and she used it to catch him in the men's restroom alone and not washing his hands. He saw her standing there with a head wrap, a rag, and a mask so not to breathe in chemical.
"You must be new, you a look a lil lighter than the help around here," he snarked. "Come open this door and act like ya good fa something."
Boo walked behind him and jumped on his back smothering him with the cloth. And squeezing her legs so not to be knocked off with all his flailing. It took a minute but he was down. She locked the door, held his mouth open, dripped her blood down his throat, read the spell, and left to enjoy the rest of the bright spring day in celebration of her accomplishment. She treated herself to a new pair of shoes. Who'd believe him or take him seriously if he did tell? She laughed about it to herself over a glass of red wine.
This time she drove straight up to his property's gate in her blue Hyundai dressed smart like a Meghan Markle with a lavender pressed button-up, pencil skirt, and scarf wrapped around her head and shoulders. With her sunglasses on she rolled her window down and smiled into the camera waiting for security to ask about her presence there.
"He's expecting me, he just doesn't know it yet. Be a doll and let him see who's waiting."
Within minutes the gate opened Boo rolled into the estate, parking and walking the stone path in her heels.
On site, the old geezer looked her up and down salaciously.
"SCRAM ya numbskulls," he waved to his security. "ARE Y'ALL DEAF? GET THE HELL ON!" He chuckled to himself as he circled Boo on his cane. "I needed me a nice young thing to look at 'round here. Hm. Can tend to this here tiguh." He lifted the waistband of his pants. "Aw yeah, this'll do just fine."
Boo stood like a Barbie and smiled.
"Well ain’t you somethin!" She rubbed his bald scalp. "So smoooth. You should let me show you a way to get an even closer cut."
"Aw nah baby, this hea' done fell out it's not coming back."
"Oh," Boo's hand shrinked back, "But you still have some," she touched the perimeter. She smiled inside watching his insecurity surface. She kept a poker face. "Oh," she giggled breathily, "You should let me give you a green tea mask it helps the circulation and also these dark marks."
"DARK?! Gimme the damn mask."
And that was how Boo worked her way into the mansion. Small command after small command she walked him inconspicuously like a dog on a short leash. He did everything she asked, unable to say no though he still had a disgusting mouth.
He gave her everything she wanted complaining the entire way and in return she played wife, secretary, and nurse.
She married him despite suspicions, fucking him only for appearance sake and she waited three years to make another move, using the time to integrate naturally.. getting to know security, the maid, the kitchen. She familiarized herself with the premises, the surrounding grounds, the finances, the assets, and the people in Larry's social circle. What she found made her smile. He didn't have one. No one liked or even respected Larry.. Not a soul. Not even his late wife or his three black children. Boo never met them. He didn't even keep pictures. According to Larry, he hated their black asses too. Still, they were set to inherit his riches if Boo did absolutely nothing so she did what anyone would do. She made her move.
"Sign this," she commanded as he was working. He glanced at the familiar document but it had obvious changes.
"What the hell is this?"
"Your will, dear."
"Bitch I can read, why the fuck is your name on it?"
"I'm your wife, silly!"
"Like hell-"
"Sign the paper," Boo grabbed his face squeezing it in her hand, her nails nearly in his cheeks. No one was around. He had no choice. She had all power over him. All the money would go to Tamara Leigh-Buschall. All of it. All the assets. Even his business which would be sold or dissolved. "Don't say a word about this to anyone," her eyes flashed devilishly.
She fixed a smile on her face and skipped off to submit the paperwork immediately in his name.
Two weeks later, she came to him in the kitchen. "Drink this," she commanded watching him take the brewed potion unaware of his compulsion to do so.
"Bitch what the fuck is this!? This tastes like shit," he smacked spitting half of it on the ground. "HELP THIS JIGGABOO TRYNA POISON ME."
"Shut yo old ass up." She gripped his throat. "Drink it, it's good for your body."
He couldn’t say a word.
She helped him up the stairs and into his own bed where she rubbed his forehead peacefully and let him talk shit about everyone including her until he fell asleep. She read the spell again and again like a mantra in a whisper until she had it memorized and no longer needed the paper. She whispered it in his ear and rubbed his forehead. She did this until sunrise, yawning and fighting sleep. She checked his pulse. The potion had stopped it and was mimicking death.
She called security immediately to check him, acting shocked when they declared him dead. There were no questions, no investigations.. No time was wasted putting him in the ground. His spirit was no longer in his body and by the time his pulse returned it would be too late. He was 6 feet under.
No one was interested in a funeral and no one was sad or upset. They were relieved.
Boo's first order of duty was to double salaries as a way to secure eternal loyalty. With everyone on one page, everything became simple. They were a team.
Boo sat happily in her new studio going over legal documents.
"Oh you frog-legged wide nose ragamuffin bitch," Larry's voice rang out frightening her. He was supposed to be gone. She looked around not finding a source for the sound. "I oughtta smother you in yo sleep."
"Try it you'll be a twice dead mothafucka."
She took another look around finding nothing. There was only one explanation. His spirit had left his body and remained in the mansion. She had to live with it until he turned 88 or move out and she wasn't going anywhere.
"You ain't gone run me out of here," she settled back into her chair crossing her legs. "I worked for this shit. Harder than you ever did."
"You gone get'chos... Best believe. You. Gone. Get Yos."
"Boy bye, I got money to make."
She revamped and redecorated it all for a new start and started her own business.. something she knew a lot about and could get up easily. All she needed was a team of bad bitches about their money who could be trusted to keep private matters private and she knew just where to look.
Thus, Boo's Dollhouse was born.

hello! I'm back!
I spent most of the last week in NOLA for the Overlook Film Festival, and it was the best time I've had in literal ages. I met so many great people, including three directors, an art director, and an actress, and I got to be ten feet away from Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel! it was truly the greatest long weekend ever; still can't believe it's over.
gonna briefly talk about the movies I got to see, though! most of these have upcoming wide release dates, and you should definitely check them out, if you're able!
CUCKOO (2024) dir. Tilman Singer: Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens lead this really fun, batshit scream-fest that was sooooo queer (thematically and textually) to me. Dan Stevens should always play weird little guys with musical instruments. whatever you think this movie is about: no, it probably isn't. not every beat lands, but the ones that do are pretty damn good. it's going to wide release in August!
ALL YOU NEED IS DEATH (2024) dir. Paul Duane: an Irish folk horror propelled forward by a metal soundtrack interwoven with haunting ballads, and an awakening of something ancient and devastating. described by Duane as a "vibe movie" in the vein of Kurosawa's PULSE and CURE with hints of Żuławski's POSSESSION, it touches on themes of obsession and love and consumption, and mysticism of forgotten pasts. I've still got the music and imagery stuck in my head. the movie will be available to rent digitally soon, and will be going to a currently unnamed streaming service later this year. (thanks for the Q&A, Paul and actress Catherine Siggins! your passion for the project was utterly infectious, and can't wait to see that next film that Paul said is going to "piss a lot of people off"!)
OCULUS (2014) dir. Mike Flanagan: 10th Anniversary Screening & Presentation of the 2024 Master of Horror Award: this plays so well in a packed house that I upped by LBX rating by half a star. the Q&A afterwards made me appreciate the movie (bleakness and all) even more, because I got to listen to Mike Flanagan talk about how he feels he's improved as a storyteller, and how just making anything is invigorating, even if you sort of cringe to look back on some things. his shout-outs about LAKE MUNGO and DOCTOR WHO were for me specifically. oh, also, hashtag ONEMOREDOG for Kate! (thanks for the Q&A, Mike! hope you got the big axe award home okay! get Kate a second dog!)
LOOKING OVER THE GARDEN WALL: a 10th Anniversary Celebration of OVER THE GARDEN WALL (2014) created by Patrick McHale: show creator Patrick McHale and art director Nick Cross came by to tell us all about their work prior to collaborating, and how the show came to be through a process that, they hoped, would create an immensely re-watchable holiday classic. we even got to see McHale's first student film, and Cross' work for a local film festival back in the 00s, and a screening of TOME OF THE UNKNOWN, the original pilot for OTGW. (thanks for the Q&A, Mike and Nick, and for the autographs and doodles afterwards! your work continues to entertain my household every fall.)
ME (2024) dir. Don Hertzfeldt: director Hertzfeldt requested that everyone go into this with as little information as possible, so I'm going to be vague here. this is wildly different from his previous work (IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY, WORLD OF TOMORROW, etc.) in presentation, that I couldn't help but just sort of sit and marvel at it. it's so experimental and unique, and I can't stop thinking about it. (heard from the man's own mouth:) the short film will be paired with a remastered theatrical re-release of IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY (2012) sometime in the next month! (thanks for the Q&A, Don, and for the chat we shared afterwards. your work is immensely important to me, and I feel very lucky to have been able to tell you so. sorry I got a little weepy, and for making you weepy, too. very proud to have been dubbed "the gateway drug" for your work. also stoked for your project with Ari Aster! I'll be front-row when it releases!)
I SAW THE TV GLOW (2024) dir. Jane Schoenbrun: similar to the above description, this is a different and more traditional presentation compared to Shoenbrun's debut feature, creepypasta-inspired WE'RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD'S FAIR (2021). TV GLOW is a slow-burn queer (specifically trans) odyssey filled to the brim with painstakingly recreated 90s TV aesthetics, haunting abstract imagery, and an aura that carried echoes of Lynch's Black Lodge (TWIN PEAKS). the ending is a sucker-punch to the gut paired with some incredible but heartbreaking Cronenberg-style body horror. I spent more time bone-deep sad than I did scared, but that's what I love so much about horror: it can make you feel anything and everything in such extremes, that it can leave you breathless. the movie will be releasing in theaters next month, and I highly recommend seeing it in a theater if you can!
the festival was seriously one of the greatest experiences of my life--like a sleepaway camp that I never wanted to end. I WILL be going again, when I'm able! thanks to everyone (volunteer staff, programmers, vendors, fans, artists) who made my first film festival so fucking amazing. I'll love you all forever~ 👻🪓🍿✨

Status: Closed for @jcksonfields Location: Pizza Thyme
Lilah had spent a good of her morning wandering around from shop to shop just gathering little things she thinks will come in handy for the upcoming trip to New Orleans. All she could think about was getting to NOLA and trying all the food, having a blast down bourbon street, enjoying Madri Gras, overall, just enjoy being away from home for a little bit. But she refused to go and not have cured her craving for a slice of pizza from Pizza Thyme first. She had been craving a slice from there for over a week now and today she was determined to make it happen. After making one last stop for a few travel sized items to take on the airplane with her, Lilah finally made her way to her final destination for the day. Luckily the walk to Pizza Thyme from where she currently was located was not a long one and she was entering the doors of the retro restaurant in no time. There was a small line, but that didn't bother her, she happily made her way over to wait her turn. While at first she didn't recognize the guy in front of her, not until she got a glance at the side of his face, when she realized who it was an inevitable smile appeared on her lips. "Why if it isn't Merrock's very own, one of a kind, JD," she lightly teased, warmly smiling, "fancy running into you here. Out of curiosity, what kind are you getting?"

supernatural s10e18 book of the damned (w. robbie thompson)
charlie roleplaying hiro protagonist from snow crash? hacker with a sword. and the nola vampire mob or whatever this group is. surely there's a connection with benny and they didn't just pick yet another character with a very specific regional accent
i like charlie, i like felicia day as charlie, but i am lukewarm on her playing a more action oriented version of charlie. i am on board with her kicking ass, but not sure felicia is the best person to take charlie there. and really straining my suspension of disbelief that charlie just stabbed a guy in a throat, got distracted by a tattoo and shot in the leg but still gets away. wait, not even leg, in the abdomen???? come on, y'all. that's not manageable without medical intervention
started this ep late and flu+covid boosters are startin to kick my ass a little bit, reconvene tomorrow. ass still being kicked by this spikevax - still Stressed. but it's earlier and i've taken some ibuprofen that's still working. let's see
Tumblr media
dean in sweats, well i'll be
sam, if you don't come clean after dean is telling you everything that went down with crowley and rowena... 🔪
Tumblr media
wiki says charlie was born in 85, so she's two years younger than sam. anyway, 🎵kid sister, kid sister. kid sister and me!🎵
DEAN We’re due for a win, okay? Overdue. I’ll tell you another thing, if this actually does work, we’re gonna take some time off. SAM What, like a vacation? DEAN Mm-hmm. And I’m not talking just like a weekend in Vegas or sitting in some crap motel watching pay-per-porn. No, I’m talking about a beach. Drinking cervezas, go for a swim, mingle with the local wildlife. When was the last time either one of us was on a beach? SAM Never. DEAN Sand between our toes, Sammy. Sand between our toes.
asking for the apocalypse right there. how many seasons until they get a successful vacation together? (15x20?)
Tumblr media
also sign me up for the inner-workings-free meatsuit
METATRON What? I thought we were having a moment. Can’t we be besties? CASTIEL No. Because you killed my friend. METATRON Oh pfhht. Dean is fine, mostly. Can’t you get past that? CASTIEL Never.
thinking about the boys perpetually stowing their baggage, but we can respect someone who holds tight to a grudge
often bitch about the musical score but i like this sound design and filming. more atmospheric and creative than they usually go
oh, dean. sammy, tell him about cas and metatron rawrgh
every tom, dick, and harry has an angel blade. so goofy. is that a standard issue cupid weapon?
DEAN And you call yourselves nerds. Come on. You got this. CHARLIE He’s right. Let’s get our Alan Turing on. Decypt this bitch.
neal stephenson (who wrote the aforementioned snow crash) also wrote cryptonomicon which contains a fictionalized version of alan turing. and
According to Stephenson, the title is a play on Necronomicon, the title of a book mentioned in the stories of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft
necronomicon aka the book of the dead (not damned but close). also mentioned evil dead/army of darkness recently and this heartbeat drum beat thing for when dean's gettin the whammy from the book reminds me of ... that. (evil dead movie contains the necronomicon)
Tumblr media
KEEP YOUR EYES TO YOURSELF, BUCKO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SAM Look, just let us translate the book, okay? If there’s a cure, we’ll do it and deal with the consequences later. I can’t lose you. DEAN Really? SAM Yeah, really. DEAN You change your mind on that, cause that’s not what you said last time. SAM Oh, come on, man. You know I didn’t mean that.
many thoughts. sad and tired thoughts. realizing now, would dean even remember how sam said he lied about that right before dean died? and this is one rough conversation to be having in front of charlie. really part of the family, esp if she's on board with the fuck the consequences we gotta fix dean. hurts to think dean really is still doubting sam's commitment to him. hurts and is exhausting that sam still hasn't told him about what he got up to.
Tumblr media
this cabin sure is swanky for one-of-many bobby-managed hunter safehouses
CHARLIE What did Dean mean? When he said you changed your mind? SAM So, awhile back, we had a chance to, um…close the gates of Hell. And in order to do that, I would’ve had to die. And, I was okay with that, and I am okay with that, but Dean was not. And so, he uh… CHARLIE He saved you. SAM Yeah, he saved me. CHARLIE And let me guess, in doing so, he did something you didn’t want, and that pissed you off. And you said something that hurt him? SAM Yeah, that sounds about right.
round and round we go on the patented winchester merry-go-round
Tumblr media
either they're mending my emotional connection to the show or padalecki is just that good but got me crying. felt very genuine
SAM You know, when Dean came to get me at school, I-I told myself… one last job, you know? One more job. And then when – when I, um…. When I lost Jess, I, again, told myself one more job. There’s always one more job, you know? And one more job, and one more job, and then I was gonna go back to law and – and to my life. CHARLIE You were the Dread Pirate Roberts of hunting. SAM Yeah. I guess I really understand now that….this is my life. I love it. But I can’t do it without my brother. I don’t want to do it without my brother. And if he’s gone, then I don’t…. CHARLIE I got it. I-I do.
that was nice, having her give him the out to stop and collect himself
samateur hour, hated that it made me laugh
Tumblr media
so does cas get like, extra powerup now that he had someone else's grace and his own back? like super mario bros flower power, shooting fireballs. based on those raggedy ass wings, guessing not
dean slippin into southern accent talking to this bad nola witch man
DEAN It’s calling to me, Sam, okay? I can hear it. It’s calling to the Mark. It wants me to take the book and run away with it. Burn it now.
reminds me of naomi and the rocket with the protomolecule sample in the expanse. why yes, i will destroy this, of course.
Tumblr media
SAM Well, you know what, Cas? You got your Grace back. You’re back. You did the right thing. CASTIEL You did the right thing. That book needed to be destroyed. We will find another way, Sam.
you did destroy it, right, sam?? very convincing reaction here
Tumblr media
that was cuter than i expected
i continue to not understand why sam doesn't just tell dean about the cas and metatron thing! jesus christ. do we have to do this?? making cas lie about it too. sigh. so tiresome
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
these lyrics and the slomo pizza party as sam has a minor internal breakdown over lying about, SHOCKER, not destroying the book. made me laugh, not gonna lie. hammering the point down way too hard. this is how you lose me, show
having sam's voiceover as he talks to (as yet unseen rowena) while still on the shot of sam looking increasingly Stressed at their little party is unusual for this show too. i like to see them trying different things, like with the clip i had at the beginning
Tumblr media
hopefully this will be interesting, at least?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
spn s5e10
(god, remember the party before jo and ellen died? that had vibes and atmosphere. cas getting drunk with the girls, and first ep with crowley)

I am so curious who Jack is in NOLA with seeing The Cure 🤔
He’s with Lisa and the hometown girl gang. It’s weird, but also kind of wholesome? Lmao.

i just think personally that rebekah mikaelson is the most underappreciated tvdu character both in-universe and in the fandom. like she has shooters and people like her but i've never seen, like, a brawl in her defense so i'm making a thinkpiece to be annoying.
first off, she shows two very different sides of herself depending on the show but unlike other people that's not a bad thing and i think it shows a lot of depth to her. in tvd they lean a lot more into the rebekah that's eternally a teenage girl with the whims of one and that makes sense for the setting. mystic falls isn't as high stakes as nola she was allowed to live her best teenage high school life because a. the most common "danger" came from two vampires that were barely a tenth of her age and b. everyone knew taking a shot at her and missing was a bad idea but taking a shot at her and NOT missing was even worse.
there's a reason why kol had to be the one to die in s4. there's no realistic world where mf doesn't get burned to the ground and the earth salted if it were rebekah
but because she was able to lean into the teenager side of her she was allowed to mess around more and act like the age she died in. her wardrobe reflected that. she joined the cheerleading team and the dance committee and had lower stakes relationships and made a friend outside of the supernatural world and i think that's beautiful
in nola, the stakes were so much higher. the "enemy" was significantly more organized and had a century of experience in living-with-the-mikaelsons studies. she had to juggle her loyalty to her family and her loyalty to the love of her life (her actual soulmate and the only [canon] rebekah ship that matters we get to that later) and she just generally didn't have the same ability or need to indulge in the teenager side of her so that went on the backburner and her thousand years came out more. this was reflected in her wardrobe as well. she was inherently more ruthless and able to make bigger moves. we saw the version of her that katherine warned stefan about in early season 3!
but her fundamental character and motivations stayed the same. her core trait is how much she loves love and her willingness to do whatever it takes to find it, even when the world laughs at her and her brothers belittle her and people try to use her. in tvd, we saw that love in a more familial way. how, at the end of the day (and regardless of the allegations) she was team mikaelson. she did things for herself, her human experiences and hopes for the cure prove that, but when push came to shove her love for her family was foundational.
in the originals, we saw what real romantic love looked like on her. with matt and stefan and mystic falls flings she might drag her feet in choosing her family first, but with marcel there was an actual battle between familial and romantic love. she found someone who actually loved her not someone who was slowly drawn to her because of her desperation to be human, or who had feelings for another woman and viewed her as little more than a restarted fling from 90 years prior.
marcel's line in season four in response to rebekah saying he loved nola more than her really settles it for me. "i love new orleans, alright? i do. and i watched it burn to the ground for you once before, rebekah. and then i waited a century and you didn't even come back for me." he acknowledges the fact that he sacrificed his city for her but then moves on to her and how he was so certain she was the one for him even after a century of waiting she was it for him. his love wasn't conditional. he loved her as a vampire he loved her in a different body as a witch and he married her knowing she was on a clock and ready to take the cure when it was available.
she couldn't keep indulging in the teenager side of her in the battleground that was new orleans, but more importantly the battleground that was her heart (i know, cheesy. but true!) there's a reason why she remains the only original who never took a white oak stake to the chest. she was able to accept herself and what she wanted and believed in in a way that her brothers just couldn't! finn hated his family for being vampires and hated himself even more, elijah wanted to believe he could keep his family together and stay as "good" and "noble" as a vampire could be. klaus' loneliness and all-consuming feeling kept him making impulsive decisions and made him delusional in a way that every loss was an icarus-like fall (love him, but he really was living on a different planet). for all that kol reveled in being a vampire, he was a witch first and most. rebekah's acceptance of her desperate need for love and ability to cling onto it with both hands when it was available made it a weakness she wasn't ashamed of and didn't try to hide or run from. and that is why she got her happy ending.
anyways sorry for this NINE HUNDRED word monstrosity i just love her so god damn much and needed the entire world to hear it
