WYSW: Love is War
*why you should watch*
*spoiler free!*
Tumblr media
I actually already made a Love is War recommendation post ages ago, but now, 3 seasons and many manga chapters in, I have more to say about it and even more praises to shower upon it. And some convincing to do, if you haven’t watched the show yet. If you like comedy anime, romance anime, or romcom anime, and you haven’t seen Love is War yet, what are you waiting for?
If you don’t know the plot, Kaguya-sama: Love is War focuses on the student council of an exclusive high school for the children of Japan’s elite. The president, Miyuki Shirogane, and the vice president, Kaguya Shinomiya, secretly have a crush on each other but refuse to let the other person know. Instead, they’re determined to make the other confess to them first.
Tumblr media
I’m not the first to say it, but Love is War genuinely has Death Note level mind games. The lengths these two go to in order to get in each other’s heads is truly impressive and frightening. But, there actually is a developing heartfelt story underneath all of the silliness, and despite their resistance and stubbornness you will be rooting so hard for Kaguya and Shirogane to get together.
The show has a wide variety of beloved characters, from the other members of the student council to Shirogane and Kaguya’s quirky families. Everyone is very likable and funny, with their own personal struggles that get explored as the story gets more complex.
Love is War has a lot to say about relationships, crushes, insecurity, classism, growing up, and even more, and does it all while being one of the funniest anime I’ve ever seen. If you’re looking for a lighthearted romcom with a bit of depth to it, Love is War is the show for you.
Thanks for reading!

I just started watching Handa-Kun and… wow this anime is absolutely hilarious??? But also, this poor guyy. Plus, the opening animation is so wild and amusing?! And catchy. New current favourite, complete series, not a recent release.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Hated by everyone around him, Sei Handa goes about his high school life regarded as an outcast—or at least that is what he believes. In reality, Handa is the most popular student on campus, revered by all for his incomparable calligraphy skills, good looks, and cool personality. However, due to an endless series of misunderstandings, Handa perceives the worship he receives from his legions of fans as bullying, leading the school's idol to shut himself off from the rest of his classmates.
But distancing himself from his peers does not deter them from adoring him; in fact, his attempts at drawing attention away from himself often end up unintentionally converting even the most skeptical of students into believers. Fashion models, shut-in delinquents, obsessive fangirls, and more—none can stand against the brilliance that is Sei Handa.”

Just finished "Romantic Killer" anime. (I recommend it!)
I really liked this. I binge watched the whole thing in one sitting because it was fucking hilarious. I really love the characters, and they are so precious! They are so nice, and so gorgeous. Especially this one character that you'll meet if you watch the show. The humor is Kaguya-sama level, and the faces remind me of One Punch Man. The premise of the show is so funny, and the main character is hilarious as well. I suggest this anime if you want a laugh. It just came out yesterday, and I have been waiting for it since I saw the preview. It is on Netflix, and it has 12 eps. It is so worth it! I guarantee. I was also trying not to simp the entire time. The characters are SO hot! I recommend it! I rate it a 9.5 out of 10! I'd watch it if I had a bad day. Also it has a deeper meaning. The last few eps are insanity. But overall, its amazing.

Indie animation/game recommendations!
With a lot of recent love for indie animation, like digital circus, Lackadaisy and Helluva Boss, I thought it’d be fun to recommend some less well known indie animations and shows. Please reblog with your own recommendations!
Epithet Erased - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHACfIDFF66rxMt46cSoVxUulvL3bKluM&si=4ipz3Yl96x5p9vtN
A ‘cartoon’ where some people have powers based on the definition of a word. The show starts off with a young kid called Molly Blyndeff waking up in a museum and having to defend herself against those who want to steal a mysterious item known as the ‘Arsene Amulet’
Although minimally animated, the show supports incredible voice acting, amazing humor and an incredibly lovable cast of characters! Not to mention sweet sweet found family.

Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective Episode 2: The Case of the Locked-Room Piggy Bank Theft
Tumblr media
With two episodes under its belt, the inner machinations and ideas of Ron as a series are better understood. Its formulaic approach and comedic routines are further exposed, and viewers get to grasp what the season as a whole will look like. And it looks like it's going to be a whole lot of fun, for quite a few different reasons.
Just to get it out of the way, I'll chat about the episode direction to start today. Where the previous episode focuses on three dimensional space through more nuanced depth of field and blur, this episode does so by placing objects in the foreground. It's a simple idea, but decidedly different from the previous episode as it uses something more concrete to create that awareness. Similarly, it has more angled shots compared to the flatter style of the first episode. Coincidentally, the usage of faceless characters appear, which I always think is a fun style since it presents the challenge of expression.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But lets talk story for this episode, the direction is pretty closely tied to the "gear" that the story's in.
We get exposition on Ron's past, actually. It's a really really cool idea, providing a fancy detective school that Ron attended where he was top of class... before he got kicked out for being attached to a string of suspicious deaths. Even more than that is the stake that Ron raises with the discussion of his past: if he's discovered to be doing detective work, he'll be put to death.
Tumblr media
In concert with the talk of BLUE, we're reminded that Ron does not have his tattoo/mark on his neck during his early days. With his comment of being banned from BLUE, it brings forward the possibility of being a marking in relation to his expulsion. Can't say for sure, but what I am certain of is that we'll explore its origins and meaning at some point.
Let's talk humor though. Crass, heavy handed, and plain silly. Ron delivers in spades with things you'd not expect at all, and pieces you'd see coming from a mile away. This one's definitely the former.
Tumblr media
However, with more of a taste for the humor with this second episode, you can begin to realize how pivotal the humor is to the mysteries. It's able to hide clues in plain sight, covering them up with the excessive comedy expressed largely by Ron. It's a really cool idea that plays to both extremes of the concept incredibly well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's not all for the humor either, no. Diomeda isn't a bad studio, which is something quite a few people can't seem to agree upon sometimes. Regardless, they are able to deliver expressive and fluid cuts, just like this one. They don't comprise the episode by any means, but they add to the energy a good deal, keeping spirits high and momentum going.
Tumblr media
I think that finally brings me to the formula though. Key pieces like Ron answering his door before Toto can knock, or the waffling of Ron during Toto's attempts at explanation, stuff like Ron laying down next to the dead bodies, and of course things like Ron ordering the suspects to die. They're all pieces of the routine that exist within this detective mystery series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But they present a challenge. How can you make something that happens routinely interesting, how do you make it fun. Well, it's a two part answer for which we only have one piece. Subtle differences with heavy handed humor. Bringing intense energy and individuality to these pieces creates an identity, one that you'll associate with Ron. You'll grow accustomed to the introduction and its purpose. And that's where the second part will come in down the road: the shake up. We're only 2 episodes in so we won't see it yet, but the further we get into this series, and the more its behind the scenes scheming goes on, we'll see a changeup in the routine. Like I said though, that's still a ways away though, so I'm more than happy to savor what we have currently.

Stop!! Hibari Kun!! Is one of my absolute favorite anime series right now!
Video content warning: flashing lights
youtube
The series is from 1983. It's about this trans-girl named Hibari and her daily struggles as both a trans-girl in the 80s and her life as a member of a yakuza family!
Tumblr media
Hibari is literally such an amazing character!! She's basically perfect in every way! But her transphobic family just can't accept her for who she is.. Hibari has also fallen in love with a new boy staying with them!(So if you see a boy in the first episode, just give it a bit for hibari to show up, lol!)
This series is a romantic comedy, and if you're looking for more late 1900s anime with queer protags (like I am), I highly recommend Stop! Hibari Kun!
But I must warn that it is not available on any modern streaming services.... if you want to watch it subbed, you have to find it on piracy websites... But that's okay for me lol I'm poor anyways so that's what I was gonna do!
CW: fat phobia, racist character depictions, and nudity.
It's not perfect because it was made in the 80s, but if you're able to tune out all the bad stuff, it's a good show, I promise!
Tumblr media
Check it out on any anime pirating site near you!

so i recently started watching Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan and lemme just say… HOW THE HELL DOES THIS SHOW NOT HAVE A LARGER FOLLOWING? it’s literally one of the funniest animes i have EVER watched. it consistently has me laughing. i don’t think i go a full minute without at least getting a giggle.
it’s also so relatable? everything about becoming/being an adult is just so emotionally accurate and it has me question if i should laugh or cry at times.
if you haven’t watched this anime, for the love of all things good, WATCH IT! i genuinely don’t think you’ll regret it 😂
