It's time for another game in the Games for Gaza bundle; this time I played co-open

co-open is a game where you play as a child going out on their first shopping trip alone. I played the game for an hour and did not manage to find and do everything, so it is certainly about more than just that. While you can just wander the store, grab some items, and cash out, you can also explore the store and talk to people. There's plenty to find and see and tasks people ask of you. There's phone numbers you can find and call on the phones as well. I ran out of time and checked out early, but the game has a flexible gameplay loop that you can certainly replay and look for the things you missed. (I spent most of my time circling the roof trying to find my friends' ball, I never did find it ;o; forgive me, bird friends.)

co-open falls neatly into the category of a 'cozy' game. The art style is charming, the atmosphere never gets too dark, everyone is friendly and has their pronouns pop on screen when you talk to them. There's cats wandering the store and the music is calming. The idea of letting a 5 or 6 year old kid wander a store alone put me off at first, but it's clear the world of co-open is one where you can do that without worry.

Gameplay wise, it is a first person exploration puzzle game where you talk to NPCs, collect items, and give those items to said NPCs. (or buy them!)

If you're into cute and cozy things you certainly can't go wrong here.

co-open costs $8.00USD, or you can get it and over 200 other projects for $10USD in the bundle. (which is growing even closer to its goal!)

Game 232 - co-open by lowpolis

I picked up this game through the itch.io Bundle for Ukraine. I chose to donate 10 dollars, and I found about 38 games in the bundle that I was actually interested in. So, the consideration for this game will be if it was worth the 26 cents (rounded up) that I paid for it and the hours that I played it for. The bundle has since ended, but I still encourage you to make a donation to the organizations listed here.

What did I think it was at first? Maybe it's a game about running a store!

How was the character creator? None, you're just a lil guy (gender neutral). The character design was pretty cute and everyone has pronoun tags next to their character - I wish I got to make one!

How was the game? Ok, so the first time I played I was like "what's the fuss about?"

You're on your very first shopping trip alone, so I...did the shopping and left. The blocky art style is cute and the music is inoffensive. The art for the little items is cute. Overall, the game took me about 30 seconds.

Then I watched the credits and was like hmm? Until I remembered that my grandmother had encouraged me to adventure!

So, the next time through, I decided to be a lil guy on an adventure. No following societal norms. Do whatever I want.

I went into the stockroom and discovered an icy portal to a snowy wonderland. I climbed a fence and made friends. I ran through the air vents and met an amorphous spirit of consumerism.

The more you explore, the more fun you'll have!

What did I not love? Once I got the gist of the game, I was able to really figure out what the gameplay was - however, it was hard for me to tell when I had seen everything I could see? It's also hard to put things back on shelves if I didn't want to pick them up. I think a little more user interface or like a hint system would be a cool addition here.

At 2 hours and 26 cents, was it really worth it? This was very cute and I quite enjoyed it. I'm sure there are more secrets I wasn't able to find. Worth it for finding it in a bundle, for sure!

Working through more of the Bundle for Ukraine games! Here is Co-Open - a game that's about going to the grocery store. Sort of.

You play as a bird/kid who is going to the grocery store for the first time by themselves, and end up doing a bunch more than that.

There's a lot more things to do and weirdness than you would think

Also there are cats.

It was fun and I don't think I found half of what I was supposed to, even thought I looked at every little thing. I'll have to do a replay sometime.

Marcus & Co. (New York City, New York)

This exquisite brooch is one of the few extant examples of plique-à-jour jewelry made by the New York firm of Marcus & Co., whose reputation at its prime rivaled that of Tiffany & Co. Herman Marcus (1828–99), a German–born and Dresden–trained jeweler, arrived in New York in 1850 and worked for a number of prestigious firms before establishing Marcus & Co. in 1892. Following his death, the company continued under the direction of his two sons, George Elder Marcus and William Marcus.

The brooch is a superb example of Marcus & Co.’s work in plique-à-jour enameling, in which the "cells" of color have no backing, allowing light to shine through the transparent enamel, thereby creating the effect of stained glass. One of the only jewelry firms of its day to succeed at this challenging technique, Marcus & Co. followed the lead of such innovative French designers as René Lalique. The sensitive 3-dimensional sculpting of the sweet pea blossoms and leaves, as well as the naturalistic coloring of the enamels, reflects the Art Nouveau aesthetic that prevailed at the turn of the century. Indeed, close parallels can be drawn with the brilliant naturalistic work of Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose oeuvre is so well represented in the Met’s collection.

so, watched ep 1 of the atla live action and uhm, imagine not wanting one of your main characters to depict sexism because you believe it doesn’t read well in Current Times, so instead you double down on the character’s obsession towards leadership in order to give him that extra edge. but in order to make that work u have to make his sister quietly obedient instead of an outspoken leading presence that has the potential to overshadow him. because silencing a female character in order to write out a male character’s story arc of unlearning sexism is obviously a better and less sexist outcome.

#also the show made kyoshi say the opening of the show instead of katara cos apparently they’re obsessed with robbing katara of her voice #she’s literally just an entire different character and i cannot think of why except to make sokka look like a more prominent leader #which also goes entirely against sokka’s character trait of consistently feeling powerless #i don’t normally vent post about stuff like this but i’m just so baffled by this #atla #anna rambles #avatar the last airbender
