Marram and Lochs in Orkney by Tony Via Flickr: The Ammophila grasses are widely known as examples of xerophytes, plants that can withstand dry conditions. Despite their occurrence on seacoasts, Ammophila grasses are not particularly tolerant of saline soils.

I just did a binge of your writing, on ao3 at least and omg please you really are so very good at writing, please do not put yourself down! The characterizations are perfect, the dialogue is amazing and everything feels like a blunt blow to the chest before the knife shows up and commits war crimes in my chest and I love it so much, the interactions aughhh 🥺
But I do have one question, a slightly strange one but you seem knowledgable enough to know at least some of an answer to it.
The way you personify (characterize?) The british isles is really interesting to me, I know a few british people and while the ones from london are more odd about everything, even the ones from scotland and the like tend to be quiet and, not calm but stony, and anger, those are the three moods, and that is reflected, though to a more exaggerated (not by too much) way in your writing.
But do you have any idea why British people are Just Like That, is it something in the water?? Why do they not like eye contact or being touched, like at all, unless they are heavily drunk? How did an entire nation end up like that?
(Apologies for rambling in the ask box, and you do not need to answer if you dont want to, I was just curious, and I do really very much love your writing)
Thank you! I'm glad you've been enjoying it so much!!! As for your question, it has diminished somewhat in the post war period and globalization certainly has been limiting people's own sense of culture as well as breaking down barriers. And I am not English and this might be a question the English have a more personal answer too but historically this is a question that has been asked and answered by many scholars.
This query of 'why are the English... like that" has been a question the Welsh, Scots, French, Irish, Bretons, Germans, Danes etc have been asking as far backs as... the 16th century? I've seen references to 'the English melancholy' going as far back. Depression, Churchill's so-called 'black dog' was referenced as far back as the 18th century as the 'English vice' which has also meant proto-BSDM sexual practices, flogging in general, drunkenness and depression and unfriendliness depending on the context, only cured by drunkenness.
Perhaps most tellingly, however, is the 'cult of melancholia' that sprung up in Europe but most acutely in England in the 16th century where jolliness and humour was only fit for the peasantry and depression, much like on tumblr at times, became a marker of artistic or intellectual tendencies and later class and status. Much the same way the upper classes, especially of the anglophone world, look down on patterns and bright colours, so too they eschew joy, spices, smiling, playfulness and laughter. Historians have assumed this filtered down to the lower classes and was crystallized by empire especially after the Napoleonic Wars.

"In Italy, there was considerable dissension between Britain and the United States over the nature of the provisional government. The British, considering themselves to have the paramount interest in Italy, claimed the right to play the dominant role in organizing the new government; FDR refused to concede this. But both Western Allies agreed that the Left should not be allowed to fill the gap left by the collapse of Mussolini’s regime and gradually retreating German occupation forces in the north; despite the publicly stated goal of “defascistization,” both British and American officers found it far easier in practice “to leave existing officeholders at their posts,” and the British (soon imitated by the Americans) used “the existing administrative system, including the police.” Only the socialists were strongly in favor of totally purging fascists from the administration, and even the Communist Party was “lukewarm” on the subject.[149]
The primary dispute between the Western Allies concerned Churchill’s desire to establish a reactionary regime under King Victor Emmanuel III and Marshal Badoglio (a fascist collaborator until 1943), as the “sole barrier to ‘rampant Bolshevism’.”[150] Immediately following Roosevelt’s March 1944 demand that Badoglio be removed because of his unpopularity, Stalin came to Churchill’s aid by recognizing Badoglio’s government; shortly thereafter the Communist Party announced its intent to participate in the government with no conditions.[151]
Occupation authorities banned electoral activity “during the period of military government,” and the military authorities complied with Badoglio’s request “to censor all criticism of the king, the government, and the army.”[152]
(...)
Italian antifascist forces and their base of public support were predictably dissatisfied with this arrangement. Badoglio and Victor Emmanuel
were universally regarded as remnants of the equally widely hated fascist order. From the moment they signed the “long surrender,” until the end of the year, opposition to the Badoglio government grew in intensity as part of the sustained political crisis that characterized Italian politics for the next two years.[154]
With the backing of Stalin and the Comintern, PCI leader Togliatti was able to enforce a non-revolutionary and cooperativist line over the objections of a much more radical rank and file. However, he did not purge the Party’s mass membership of dissidents — a policy that left it ideologically quite diverse and laid the way for the future emergence of Eurocommunism.[155]
When the Allies entered Rome in June 1944, the Committee of National Liberation refused to accept Badoglio as head of government. Churchill was furious, and — joined by Stalin — raised the issue of whether this was even legal under the terms of the surrender. But the new prime minister, Bonomi — former head of the Committee of National Liberation and a moderate constitutional monarchist — excluded Badoglio from the Cabinet, with the approval of the United States.[156]
Pietro Nenni’s Socialist Party and the leftist Action Party both soon became disaffected from the Bonomi government over its lackadaisical approach to defascistization, although the Communist Party remained neutral. Meanwhile the United States finally and unambiguously won the competition for influence in Italy, as Bonomi developed closer ties with Roosevelt and expressed his desire to be integrated into Washington’s vision of a postwar economic order.[157]
When Allied forces reached Rome, leftist antifascist partisans got considerably harsher treatment than fascist military and police forces had received in the south.
To the Allied soldiers reaching the Rome region the experience was strange indeed. Armed Italians, often in red shirts, waving revolutionary banners, greeted them, frequently after they had set up their own local administrations. The Allied armies pushed some Partisans aside, and even threatened them with the firing squad; they arrested many and threw them into prisons. “The problem is a novel one and is bound to be met with in further intensity the further north the advance goes,” one political officer reported in June, and whether these men were elected or not, Anglo-American officers decided, the Partisans would have to place themselves under occupation authority. The basic policy urged “tact and sympathy” but the Partisans were to surrender their arms; if possible, employment was to be found for former “patriots,” as the military authorities preferred calling them. Indeed, the Occupation followed the carrot and stick policy, those Partisans refusing to hand in arms facing prison, those cooperating being given special food rations and, if available, jobs, though not usually in the army and rarely in the police. Unemployed, the Partisan was a “menace,” armed a danger: “One thinks of the troubles of Yugoslavia and Greece in this connection,” one regional commander observed to his colleagues.[158]
The Western Allies also faced the problem of how to deal with CLNAI partisans in the north, which was considerably more complicated because they were more numerous, and were directly engaged in combat with German forces.
The problem of the Resistance, the Western leaders understood by the end of summer 1944, was not in controlling that small part of it liberated in the Rome area, but in reducing the potential danger that the very much larger groups still on Nazi-held territory posed.[159]
The partisans had organized a strike wave in the industrial cities in late 1943, in summer 1944 were tying down a sizeable German combat force, and considered themselves the legitimate governing authority in the region.[160] The British and Americans greatly feared that, in the event the German occupation forces withdrew, leftist partisans would take over the northern cities before Anglo-American military forces could move in. While the Communist Party was willing to appease the Western Allies, the socialists threatened to create a socialist separatist regime in the north after German withdrawal — a position that contributed greatly to their popularity compared to the communists.[161]
Throughout the summer [the Allies] sharply reduced the quantity of arms dropped to the Resistance, which had never been substantial in the first place. For purely military reasons — the Resistance was tying down as many as fourteen Axis divisions at one time — the Anglo-American authorities renewed sending in a somewhat greater quantity at the end of September, but OSS agents in Partisan territory were able to have non-Communist Partisans receive first priority. Then, when the Allied military decided the Italian campaign had gone as far as it might for the winter and should not detract from the war in Western Europe, it was possible to regard the problem of the Resistance as mainly political. With constant references to Greece, Yugoslavia, and the threat of Bolshevism everywhere, the military authorities embarked on a Resistance policy that was both military and political in its dimensions. On November 13, General Alexander, Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean, broadcast a message to the Resistance urging them, in light of winter conditions, not to engage in large-scale military operations, to save their supplies and await orders, and restrict their activities to smaller operations. To the Germans it was a notice that the Allies would not initiate a winter campaign, freeing the Nazis for other tasks, including greater efforts in wiping out the Partisans. The Resistance was demoralized and significantly only the Communist leaders in the north attempted to paint the best possible face on Alexander’s message. The Germans and fascists were now in a position to consolidate their power, and a widespread hunt resulted in an unprecedented elimination of Resistance leaders and members. Defections, death, and reprisals were everywhere.[162]
Allen Dulles, Swiss director of the OSS, actually entered into clandestine negotiations with the Nazi occupation forces and secured their agreement not to surrender to the CLNAI, and to maintain essential services and law and order until they could surrender to arriving Anglo-American forces.[163]
Despite this betrayal, German units disintegrated from low morale; armed workers took over the major northern cities and occupied the factories in April 1945, and then handed over control to the CLNAI. Ignoring the commands of communist leaders, partisans engaged in mass reprisals — including summary execution — of fascists.[164]
The Bonomi government itself never directly addressed or resolved the status of the area under CLNAI political control, preferring to treat CLNAI as “the directing organization of the Resistance in the north.” The Socialist Party and Action Party, however, hoped to leave them in territorial control as “the basis of a reconstructed political order” centered on workers’ councils.[165]
Togliatti helped salvage the situation for the Allies by refusing to side with the Socialists, and insisting on national unity — thus sabotaging the ability of the CLNAI to pursue regional separatism on their own.[166]
Finally, on December 7, the CLNAI signed an agreement — the Protocols of Rome — with humiliating terms:
In return for the promise of financial subsidies, food, clothing, and arms, the CLNAI agreed to subordinate itself to the Supreme Allied Commander, not to appoint a military head of the CLNAI unacceptable to him, to hand over power to the Allied military government upon its arrival in the north, and to follow the orders of the military government before and after liberation…. The Allies obtained assurances from the Resistance that it would not create a revolution.[167]
When Allied forces reached areas of CLNAI control, they removed them from power, and revoked all decrees.[168]

interregnum
(A snapshot, amidst the Battle of Britain. Arthur and Matthew-centric. Notes: Content warning-wise—injury mention. No explicit violence. “Jack” is AUS, and “Zee” is NZ. 800 words).
London, 1940
“Well then, what does it say, Matthew?”
Arthur’s right arm is ensconced in a sling—but as always, his father is no less imposing, in the sharp and neat lines of his olive-coloured dress uniform, the gold of his buttons gleaming and polished. Even wounded, he exudes power effortlessly.
“It’s postmarked from New York.” Matthew slices open the envelope.
“Go on. Read it out.” Behind Arthur, the morning sun streams in, through the large, expansive windows of his office, scattering diamond-shaped patches of light onto the antique carpet and the hardwood floor. On the glass itself—tape, placed in a methodical, diagonal crisscrossing pattern, accompanied by dark curtains. The standard precautions for nightfall nowadays.
Thus far, the air raid sirens had mercifully been silent today.
Matthew unfolds the letter. Alfred’s handwriting is bold and hurried, his tone casual and light-hearted. Yo old fart—A whole colourful paragraph on how Billie Holiday and Gregory Peck— a new but apparently promising actor—had been in town. The latest jazz concerts he’d attended. The nice cut of sirloin he’d had last night, at the Waldorf-Astoria.
“He says…” Matthew skims his brother’s letter. He jumps to the second last paragraph, “...that he’ll be in San Francisco. At the naval facility and shipyard there. Keeping an eye on the Pacific. And that Congress will probably widen the cash-and-carry scheme to include war materiel. He wishes you good luck, and says that there’s a box of genuine Cuban cigars for you in the mail.”
“Well, I certainly never would turn down a good cigar but—Good luck? Cash and carry?” Father snorts, his tone derisive. “Does that wretched lad think my gold reserves are unlimited, to pay him for all that?” He turns away from Matthew, the slope of his shoulders tense. “So, he’s not coming, is he?”
He’s angry now, Matthew knows. Not the sort of turbulent rage that was a prelude to the sorts of shouting matches Father had with Alfred, but something simmering, like a kettle slowly boiling over on a stove. Anger was what Father preferred to show, over disappointment—whenever it came to Alfred.
Matthew resented them both for it, at times. How often had he been the bedraggled mediator and go-between for Father and Alfred? For his brother, the ocean that lay between them and Father was actually a barrier the way it wasn’t for Matthew. His brother had always done whatever the hell he wanted, his will as forceful and indomitable as trying to bottle a hurricane.
Father had fumed for three decades after he’d burned Alfred’s name off the family tree. But then, as the years went by—he’d mellowed on his brother. Turned back to regarding his eldest son with the sort of grudging respect and recognition he bestowed on an equal—and no one else. Not Matthew, nor Jack and Zee, not even Father’s own siblings, let alone anyone else across the rest of his vast empire, no matter how much they’d bled for King and Country.
But Matthew squashes those feelings down for now. It wasn’t the time.
“No. He isn’t.” Matthew replies carefully. “He says his hands are tied by the Neutrality Acts.”
“Is that what he said?” Father laughs, sharp and loud. His green eyes glint as he turns to face Matthew. “Steel bars and the Almighty himself couldn’t tie that wretch’s hands, not unless he allowed them to.”
The New World, with all its power and might, Churchill had anointed, waxing lyrical and dramatic. Alfred, Matthew knew, would squeeze something more through the legal loopholes, sooner or later.  It wouldn’t be nothing, it would help—but it would be far short of what Father really wanted. His brother was that way. All those tangled up threads about family that Alfred preferred to avoid upfront, to bury under cheerful irreverence or, on other occasions, spiteful snippiness towards their father.
You have me, Dad, is what he wants to say. But he doesn’t. “I’ll write back to him.”
“You do that. Maybe he’ll listen, if it’s coming from you.” Arthur’s nod is curt. The line of his mouth is thin. His nostrils flare. “Goodness. When I said ‘in God’s good time’, I meant hurry the bloody hell up, not sit there twiddling your thumbs.”
This, Father says with casual, dismissive annoyance. As though he’s dealing with something no more inconvenient than a tailcoat not being mended on time or being short on his favourite Earl Grey. As though it were something displeasing but ultimately of little import to him and his plans, old and confident as he was in his power—but it’s obvious.
How much Arthur really looked— in the face of the unfolding disaster before them, with bated breath and carefully-concealed hope—to his estranged son and Matthew’s older brother. How much he longed to have Alfred by his side.

An Hour-Nineteen
Remus accidentally ended up on a half marathon course and ends up having an interview with a gorgeous reporter. Inspiration Here
After years of telling himself he should start running again like in school, Remus finally got his act together. Remus never excelled at track, but he had been decent enough to make the team. It helped clear his head when things went crazy. Since his break up with Benjy, he felt that need for an outlet once more. Now a few months later he felt good and had a nice routine.
Remus slipped out the door of his building, trainers tied tight and earbuds snug in blaring Bikini Kill. He imagined the sound of his treads on the pavement matched the beats of Rebel Girl and Carnival. All that mattered was his breathing and his heart rate for about 2 kilometers. The time didn’t even matter because this time was for him.
Until he started the 3rd kilometer, when two other runners passed him. He wasn’t in a race, but he felt like it as he rounded a bend between buildings. And shit. Coming out the other side, he swore. On both sides of the street were spectators, cheering and holding up signs. Ahead of him were two runners and a big arch with the banner 5th Annual St. Mungo’s Hospital Half Marathon.
Oh no.
The anxiety coursing through his body made it difficult to turn around and leave the course now all eyes seemed to be on the front of the pack… which included him! Great. Okay. He needed to just run it out. Going to be barriers probably would make things worse. The only way out is through, that’s what they say. Who said that? Churchill, ugh no. No wait, Frost. Okay.
Jesus. Glancing over his shoulder he found no one else was on his tail. Of course he couldn’t just fall back for a third place finisher who actually registered for the race. Then if he stopped as if he had an injury he probably would end up as some inspirational TikTok as other runners helped him to finish.
So he ran through the cheering spectators and crossed the finish line. In front of him two men were bent over in exhaustion. Well they did just run a half marathon in — he glanced up at the board — an hour and nineteen minutes? Holy shit.
Suddenly a medal slipped over his neck and a cookie was shoved into his hand by a volunteer in a bright yellow vest. He took his ear buds out and went to refuse, “Oh — no —“
“It’s third place! You’re not a loser, wear it with pride, mate.” The man patted him on the shoulder.
Jesus. Okay. He needed to get out of here now. Eyes on a pivot Remus began to move away from the finish line as volunteers and staff around him congratulated him. Now he felt immensely guilty. The poor bloke who was meant to be in third. Shit, this only happened to him.
“Excuse, hi, yes. Congratulations on coming in third. How does it feel to run an hour, nineteen?” A microphone appeared in front of his face after a few steps towards the exit.
“Oh.” He should have just told him he fucked up and ended up here, but then he’d end up a laughing stock and national fucking news, wouldn’t he? God if he just pretended to be in third then it could all just blow over. “Right, well thanks. Er… it feels… unbelievable.”
At that moment Remus finally looked beyond the microphone at the person asking him questions. He wished he didn’t because he was gorgeous. Sharp features and grey eyes and a smile that looked like he was up to no good.
“Is the hour and nineteen minutes a personal best? It’s very impressive.” Christ, and his voice sounded like honey.
“Ah, yes. I guess it is.” He rubbed his forehead. How did he always end up in the most ridiculous situations?
“What was your race plan then?”
Ha, god, he didn’t even have a plan to get out of this interview. “I didn’t have one.”
The man’s eyes widened. “Okay, what about food? You must have had a good power meal.”
“No, just… just raw talent.” His protein smoothie and single egg probably wouldn’t have done much.
“Mmm, can't let the competition know?” The interviewer cocked an eyebrow and Remus wanted to keel over.
“So, what’s your advice to other runners?”
What would marathoners need to do? “Eat well, train hard, and if all else fails sign up for a race at the last minute.”
The interviewer let out a sharp laugh then pointed at his shirt. “You’ve lost your bib. Can I have your race number? What’s your name?”
Remus stood up straight. Of course he didn’t have a bib with a race number, he sort of needed to register for that. “Right from running too fast. I need to, um, run! Bye!”
Surely he ran fast enough out of there to possibly actually make an hour-nineteen for a marathon.
***
The next day, Remus’ embarrassment still lingered. He stayed away from any social media in case he had been found out. Of course he had to tell Alice before it ate away at him inside.
“So you just took the medal and the cookie and ran? My god, Moony, what the fuck?” She cackled, standing between the kitchen and the front of the cafe. It was currently dead aside from the few regulars who were plugged into their computers doing their work.
“I know!”
Alice doubled over, holding her pregnant stomach. “Oh now I’m going to burst. I need the loo, watch up front for a minute.” She wheezed out another laugh. “Only you Moony.”
Remus rolled his eyes as she waddled by him towards the staff bathroom, still laughing. He’d never live it down, but at least it felt less like it was eating away at him now.
The bell above the door jingled, catching his attention away from his misery. That didn’t last long because as soon as he stepped behind the iPad to take the order, his eyes landed on the handsome interviewer from the half marathon.
“Hey, I was right. An Hour-Nineteen, it is you.”
This only confirmed that people couldn’t not actually die of embarrassment or burst into flames over it because if that were true it would have happened then.
“I’ve come here before but you were busy making things. He pointed behind Remus to where he normally worked quickly on baking pastries.
“Oh.”
The interviewer grinned. “Look, this is weird but, I was wondering if you’d like to have dinner.”
Shit. Of course the handsome man only wanted a date when he found himself embroiled in a lie. “I can’t.”
The corner of his lips turned down. “I’m Sirius, by the way. I’m sorry if this is all weird.”
“You’ve no idea.” Remus’ cheeks were burning.
“I apologize if I’m coming off as a stalker, I knew I would. My best mate convinced me it’d be okay.” He shifted a little. “I also wanted you to know I didn’t run the interview.”
Remus let out a sigh. “Okay.”
“I know you didn’t actually run.”
Great so he probably ran a different one and told everyone about the moron who joined the race.
“Three other runners accidentally ended up on the course because they didn’t block it properly. So no one knows who you are and the correct hits place finisher got his due,” Sirius explained as the tension unraveled in his chest. “You’re just some mysterious man. That was some quick thinking though, I thought you were funny.”
Now he blushed for different reasons.
“So I ended up here and now I’m talking a whole lot and you’re standing here thinking I’m a stalker creep.”
“No, no I don’t think that.” Now his cheeks were pink for another reason.
“So, I guess I’ll get a coffee and a cinnamon roll and die of embarrassment.”
“I can get that for you and go double on the embarrassment.”
Sirius laughed. “Thanks for sparing me.”
“You really want to go on a date… with a person who pretended to run a marathon.”
He nodded, a mischievous spark in his eye. “Yeah, I think you’re just my type.”
Remus swallowed. “Okay.”
Sirius grinned. “Excellent. I can’t promise no teasing.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure everyone knows you stalked me.”

What’s crazy is black people were some of Elvis’s biggest fans early in his career while conservatives hated him! Now it’s the opposite.
you know that really famous churchill quote, “a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on”? decades of misinformation and falsehoods did this (an ugly, entirely fabricated quote, that single line from public enemy…), it’s honestly startling to see how easily that took root and how hard it is to dispel despite copious facts and real life stories and testaments to his character from those who knew/loved/worked with/worked for him. he grew up alongside black people and culture and in the church. that interview baz did with his childhood friend says so much in itself. then his friendships with contemporary black musicians were lifelong, his respect for black music and artistry (and other prominent figures of that time) was never something he hid, he loved the sweet inspirations, he embraced his black fans. idk how so many modern day people, including those in music, have misconstrued him so badly. he never gave himself that moniker of “the king” either, he always deferred it.
Tumblr media
there’s more here and some lovely photos too:
https://www.elvis.com.au/presley/elvis-not-racist.shtml
(conservatives aren’t threatened by his rebelliousness/sexuality/etc in the same way anymore, and a lot of them probably grew up hearing him, so the “danger” he posed in the 1950s isn’t relevant to them today, but that doesn’t mean they understand anything about what made him important 🙃)
it’s just really unfortunate and saddening and a stark cautionary tale about doing your research and learning truths for yourself before you take rage online or scurrilous rumors at face value. :(

The Italian Chapel is a highly ornate Catholic chapel on Lamb Holm in the Orkney Islands. It was built during World War II by Italian prisoners of war, who were housed on the previously uninhabited island while they constructed the Churchill Barriers to the east of Scapa Flow. Only the concrete foundations of the other buildings of the prisoner-of-war camp survive. The chapel was not completed until after the end of the war, and was restored in the 1960s and again in the 1990s.

The Cultural Power of Bow Ties
The bow tie, a small but mighty accessory in the world of fashion, wields a unique cultural power. Beyond being just a piece of fabric, the bow tie has evolved into a symbol of sophistication, rebellion, and individualism. This essay explores the multifaceted cultural significance of bow ties, tracing its journey from traditional attire to a modern fashion statement.
Historical Significance
Historically, the bow tie emerged as a significant element of men's formal wear. Originating in the 17th century, it was initially adopted by Croatian mercenaries as a part of their uniform. This fashion was soon picked up by the French elite, marking the beginning of the bow tie's association with high society and elegance. Over time, it became a staple in formal attire, symbolizing respectability and refinement.
Symbol of Professionalism
In certain professions, the bow tie has been more than just a fashion choice; it's a symbol of professionalism and expertise. Notably, in the academic and medical fields, professionals like professors, scientists, and doctors have favored bow ties. This preference is partly practical – bow ties don’t dangle over patients or laboratory equipment – and partly traditional, reflecting a distinguished and intellectual image.
Iconic Personal Style
Bow ties have also become a hallmark of personal style for many iconic figures. From Winston Churchill's polka-dot bow ties to the quirky choices of Bill Nye "The Science Guy", these individuals have used the bow tie to express their unique personalities. It acts as a tool for self-expression, allowing wearers to stand out and make a statement about their individuality.
Fashion and Rebellion
Interestingly, the bow tie has periodically served as a symbol of rebellion in fashion. It represents a departure from the conventional necktie, often embraced by those looking to break from norms. This aspect of the bow tie resonates with youth cultures and avant-garde fashion movements, where it is used to challenge traditional notions of dress and gender norms.
Pop Culture and Media
In pop culture, the bow tie has been immortalized by characters in films and television, often used to depict a range of personalities – from the brainy and awkward to the suave and sophisticated. Characters like James Bond and Doctor Who have elevated the bow tie to a cool, almost heroic status, influencing fashion trends and perceptions globally.
Inclusivity and Diversity
Recently, the bow tie has transcended gender boundaries, becoming a unisex fashion item. It has been embraced by all genders as a symbol of style and empowerment. This shift reflects broader societal changes towards inclusivity and the breaking down of traditional gender-based fashion norms.
Bow ties, far from being a mere accessory, is a powerful cultural artifact. It has journeyed through history, embodying different roles – from a symbol of elegance and professionalism to an icon of personal style and rebellion. In contemporary fashion, it continues to evolve, breaking gender barriers and inspiring new trends. The bow tie’s ability to adapt yet retain its distinctive charm is a testament to its enduring cultural power.

What the fuck is wrong with Orkney
Several things. This little archipelego of different tides, whirlpools, and sharp cliffs is set in the north sea and although 8082 miles away from the north pole is still close enough that it has the extreme contrasts of long nights or long days that I have personally exprienced with summer light lasting until 3am and rising at 5am. It's never truly dark in summer and never truly light in winter.
There's also not many trees. It's not quite beyond the tree line like Shetland, but trees are hard to come by and this personally just fucked with my head along with the night and day cycle.
The Churchill barriers are a personal fear of mine because of too many encounters of, if the road barriers had not been put in place in later years, I would have been knocked off the road by the waves knocking into me. (Tragically lost my music player in Orkney because one wave knocked the windows of the bus open and soaked us all). The wind is also merciless (part of the reason why there's so few trees) and I have had to go to the doctor with a burst ear drum because of it.
And the history in general is fascinating and a little eerie for some. There are many cairns that are separated from the land of the living through rings of water (mostly natural and in bends of rivers) and one of my lecturer's just casually said 'it's like they're keeping something out, or something in'. And that has such potential as a horror.
Also the nucklavee. Which I will never say the name of out loud. That thing. Fuck that thing in particular.
