FIGHT!
I would recommend listening to as much as you can of each song before voting, but how you choose is up to you! Remember to be civil in the tags and replies!
Propaganda under cut:
Chocobo Theme:
(none included)
Honeylune Ridge:
"It SUCKS and it's BORING compared to like every other song. It doesn't make me feel any better about being in the Moon Kingdom, and honestly every time I go there post-game I put on another song in the menu, just to make it a teeny bit more bearable. TBH I really don't like the Moon Kingdom anyway and this may just be a little part of it, but still. It sucks. To me."
Feel free to add more propaganda in the tags and replies, or send it to me in the ask box and I'll try to share it as soon as I can!

okay quick question: what the fuck is ff7 actually like, about. what’s the goal? also why does everyone i see just look like a person who could potentially have something magic abt them and then there’s just an unironic talking cat. what are the rules in this universe? (i don’t need to know about all the other ff games unless it’s necessary setup, i’m mostly just curious abt the story of 7)
Starts vibrating. This is gonna get so long.
First things first I feel it necessary to clarify that no game in the mainline Final Fantasy series takes place in the same world. FFVII is a completely different world from say FFXIV and so on. Some games have sequels and spin offs, like FFVII having Crisis Core and (groan) Dirge of Cerberus, or FFX and FFX-2. But other than that, no relation between games.
Final Fantasy VII is a more sci-fi fantasy take on the FF series, keeping the themes of magic and adventure, but adding a dieselpunk/cyberpunk twist to it. Overall the main themes of FFVII is environmentalism and identity.
The characters are pretty consistent with the themes and designs of the entire FF franchise, it’s meant to be a little silly. So stuff like Moogles, Chocobo, talking cat, all falls under that silliness of FF.
Now the fucking story, there’s so much going on in this game. For simplicity (and personal preference) I will be ignoring the FFVII Compilation in favor of ONLY explaining the original 1997 game. There’s already so much going on, no need to complicate things.
The story of FFVII follows nine heroes who all have their own beef with the Shinra Electric Power Company, the company who rules over many cities and villages throughout the world by use of their private military. Over the roughly 40 years (iirc) the company has been around, they’ve committed several atrocities against humanity and the planet itself, which is a living thing in FFVII!! It’s very very important to note the planet it ALIVE!!
Shinra has several parts of the company that are important to the story, I won’t go over the company’s entire hierarchy, but there’s important parts of the company that I absolutely have to explain.
The R&D department is arguably the most antagonistic, led currently by Professor Hojo. The bitch is this prick who is over enthusiastic about human experimentation, eugenics being a motivator behind that (not as obviously as say Albert Wesker, but you cannot ignore Hojo is largely a eugenicist)
Then we have SOLDIER, Shinra’s super-soldiers created by Hojo. These guys are experimented on and enhanced with Mako, which is well put by Barret the “Lifeblood of the planet.” Among their ranks are Sephiroth, the most famous and powerful of the SOLDIERs, and (allegedly) Cloud Strife. Plus another guy, we’ll get to him.
Then there’s the Power Company part of this power company. Shinra built reactors that pump Mako out of the planet and convert it into energy. This process depletes the planet of Mako, a resource that IS finite and that the planet needs to survive. The company markets Mako as a clean and safe energy source, in a world that previously largely depended on coal mining. However Mako energy is anything but, where the reactors are built, the native flora and fauna eventually die out, and allows monsters to thrive. Plus, exposure to refined Mako is notably very dangerous to humans, as overexposure leads to “Mako poisoning” which meddles the mind and weakens the body. (So how do SOLDIERs work then? Great question! I’ll get to that!)
The story kicks off with a group in Shinra’s crowning accomplishment, the city of Midgar, called Avalanche. Avalanche is a group of “Ecoterrorists” who are set out to take Shinra down to save the planet. The group is led by our beloved Barret Wallace alongside a colorful cast of lovable characters, Jessie, Biggs, Wedge, and Tifa Lockhart! Plus, the newly hired ex-SOLDIER mercenary (and Tifa’s childhood friend), Cloud Strife.
The group conducts several missions to bomb the Mako reactors in Midgar, the first bombing going off without a hitch, the second mission… not so much. After one (really easy) boss fight, Cloud ends up falling off the upper city plate down into the under city, directly through the roof of a church where he meets our mysterious Aeris Gainsborough!! Aeris hires Cloud as a bodyguard (with the payment of one date with her), as she escapes Shinra’s Turks. I’d explain what the Turks do, but just know they’re all kinda John Wick types.
Now I’m gonna speed through the rest of the game since we’ve met all four of the most important protagonists.
The rest of the game kicks off after Aeris decides to help Cloud and Tifa after they learn Shinra plans on destroying part of the city just to take out Avalanche. During their mission to save the city, Aeris is kidnapped by Shinra. Reason being, Aeris is an Ancient (later clarified to actually be called Cetra), a people who were able to speak directly to the planet, and she’s the very last one at that. The mission fails and many innocent people are killed in the fallout, as well as the other members of Avalanche. After all Aeris did to help, including saving Barret’s daughter Marlene, our heroes are determined to save her. During their mission to save Aeris, it’s revealed that the long thought dead General Sephiroth is somehow still alive, a fact Cloud insists should be impossible.
After that, Cloud is determined to track down Sephiroth and take him down for good, as revenge for Sephiroth destroying Cloud and Tifa’s hometown, Nibelheim. All of our heroes agree to help Cloud pursue Sephiroth after learning what he did to Nibelheim. Along the way we meet lots of other characters.
Nanaki aka Red XIII, a funny little talking animal who was being held prisoner alongside Aeris, rescued at the same time she was. He agrees to follow the group until he can return to his home, as thanks for them rescuing him from Professor Hojo.
Yuffie Kisarsgi (my beloved daughter), a teenage ninja and thief from Wutai, who is on the hunt for Materia (magical gems that allow people to cast magic). She joins the group after she steals their materia and promptly is defeated, deciding she might have more opportunities to get materia if she doesn’t go it alone.
The journey continues as the group heads out to find Sephiroth. Their first encounter with him being on a boat to Costa del Sol. Where Sephiroth leaves behind a limb (I think an arm? I never remember which limb is which) of his “mother” Jenova, and flees by doing a backflip and flying away. This limb transforms into a large monster that then attacks the group. After she’s defeated, the quest to find Sephiroth continues.
They travel across the world, landing in all sorts of unique locations, all in search of Sephiroth and how to truly defeat him. We meet more guys.
Cait Sith (look up how to pronounce this in Scottish Gaelic, NOT English) is a little toy cat the group meets at the theme park the Gold Saucer. He receives a fortune that the group is in trouble and cue my favorite “joined the party” moment in any video game:
Vincent Valentine, an ex-Turk who reveals Jenova is not truly Sephiroth’s mother, but instead a woman named Lucrecia, whom he was in love with. Vincent was experimented on by Hojo and gained the ability to turn into monsters. He chose to sleep in a coffin for the rest of his life as atonement for not being able to stop Lucrecia from experimenting on herself and her son. After he learns Sephiroth is a threat to the planet, he joins the group to stop him.
Cid Highwind is a skilled pilot and SHOULD have been one of the first men to go to space, unfortunately one of his crew members put herself at risk during the spaceship’s launch and he chose to cancel the launch to save her. After that, Shinra defunded his space program which he resented them for. The group attempts to steal his plane before Shinra can and he joins them mainly because he wants to stick it to Shinra, plus they broke his plane and he needs to fix it.
That’s the whole gang! Finally, crazy how many playable characters there are in this game.
Eventually the group learns of the Black Materia, an extremely powerful weapon that was created by the Cetra (shhhh don’t listen to Rebirth they lied to you) as a result of them creating Holy, an equally powerful materia that was created to rid the world of Jenova, the Cetra’s greatest enemy. They continue on a quest to find the Black Materia before Sephiroth can use it to destroy the world. (It’s kinda a Fullmetal Alchemist equivalent exchange thing, to create the ultimate protective materia, the ultimate destructive materia had to be created in return)
All the while, Shinra pursues the group hoping Aeris will lead them to the “Promised Land” a land foretold by the Cetra to be a paradise (it’s the Cetra’s afterlife lmfao, Shinra’s stupid).
Upon finding the Black Materia, Sephiroth finally busts out his ability to control Cloud, forcing Cloud to hand over the materia to him. Aaaand now I can explain how SOLDIERs work. All SOLDIERs have Jenova’s cells in them, which is what allows them to survive Mako exposure AND is also how Cloud was able to keep finding Sephiroth! Jenova, and Sephiroth, can exert control over anyone with her cells and is currently trying to create a “Reunion”, drawing in everyone who contains Jenova’s cells so she can be whole again. Which is why Cloud is inexplicably drawn to following Sephiroth (hahahaha bitch fell for the classic thinking it’s about revenge but actually just being alien mind control).
Right after losing the Black Materia to Sephiroth, Aeris heads out on her own. The group manages to follow her to the lost city of the Cetra, where she attempts to summon Holy to defeat Jenova and Sephiroth.
The group arrives too late to rescue Aeris before Sephiroth arrives and kills her. Jenova appears once again and the group defeats her. They all mourn the loss of their beloved friend, then become reinvigorated to stop Sephiroth.
They go snowboarding literally immediately after this, funniest tonal shift of all time, as they head to the northern crater. They gets their hands back on the Black Materia before they make it to a cavern in which the REAL Sephiroth has been sealed this ENTIRE TIME!!!!
Cloud leaves the Black Materia with [enter ally of the player’s choice] so Sephiroth can’t take control of him to steal it back again.
Shinra also makes their way to this cavern, Professor Hojo then reveals that Cloud was never in SOLDIER, but instead is an experiment created by him, a “Sephiroth Clone”. Cloud is led to believe that he isn’t the real Cloud Strife, and only took on that appearance from Jenova’s ability to read minds (she can do so many things) and take the appearance of others based off memory, in this case, Tifa’s memory of her childhood friend. Cloud reacts super normally to this information (he has a meltdown). Sephiroth manages to trick [whoever the player left the Black Materia with] into bringing the Black Materia to Cloud. Who ONCE AGAIN is compelled to give it to Sephiroth.
Sephiroth is back for real now, and summons Meteor with the Black Materia. It’s a meteor, exactly what it sounds like.
Then literally so much happens. I can speedrun the disc three explanation sooo well. Cloud falls into the soup (the Lifestream, think of it like the veins of the planet) and goes missing. The group decides Cid’s in charge in his place since he’s a ship captain. Giant monsters emerge out of the plant, called Weapons (creative naming all around in this game, probably sounded cooler in Japanese). The Weapons were created as a defense mechanism of the planet against Jenova. But now they’re just kinda freaking out and blowing shit up.
Cloud is found completely unresponsive in a town called Mideel, Tifa elects to stay with him in hopes he’ll get better. The rest of the group heads forward on a mission to find the Huge Materia (literally just materia but big) before Shinra. Hoping maybe they’ll be able to use it to stop Meteor somehow.
Wacky adventures ensue. A weapon shows up in Mideel and causes an earthquake that opens up to the Lifestream, Cloud and Tifa both fall into the soup.
In the Lifestream, Tifa explores Cloud’s memories. She slowly tries to piece together the real story of what happened to Cloud, and to prove that he IS the real Cloud Strife.
We learn about Zack, an actual SOLDIER, who came to Nibelheim with Sephiroth before he destroyed the village. And how in Cloud’s memories, he placed himself in Zack’s shoes. (This is who Zack is and this is one of two parts of the entire game he shows up in)
As they go on and explore Cloud’s memories, they learn that he might never have been in SOLDIER, but he WAS in Nibelheim when it was destroyed, but as an infantryman, not a SOLDIER. He wore a helmet the entire time literally only because he was embarrassed about potentially running into Tifa (he was 16 back then, typical teenager behavior).
Cloud and Tifa wash up back in Mideel, found by their friends. This happens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Kidding, this is just the joke I made about this scene)
They go kill Sephiroth. Free Holy, which gets rid of Jenova once and for all and with the helpful of the Lifestream (again the planet is very alive) Meteor is stopped and the day is saved!! The only question that remains is, did Holy decide humanity was part of the threat to the planet? Do they remain after Meteor is stopped? It’s up to interpretation!!! We know Nanaki lived tho! He lived on for another 500 years!!!
Anyways that’s the gist of it, there’s like, way more. You would not believe how much story is packed into this game. And I loveeee it, it’s really good :) the characters are my everythings <3

Some miscellaneous Distant Worlds thoughts and highlights!
I spent the entire concert either crying, grinning, getting goosebumps, or all three. 12/10
The Rebel Army Theme from FFII during the I-III 2002 Medley BANGS SEVERELY with a live orchestra, holy shit.
The screen was playing scenes from the games and for FFI it was literally either overworld walking or random battles lmao.
The "Spoony Bard" moment from FFIV and Sabin suplexing a train in FFVI both appeared and that makes me happy. Glad to see that memes endure.
The Chocobo Theme part of the I-III medley is distilled joy. It was SO bouncy and fun!
Arnie Roth (the conductor) is really fun I love him. He just gave me good vibes.
The first half of the concert concluded with a brand new battle medley for FFI-VI and it BANGS. The arrangement for the FFIV battle theme is super chill and I'm in love. And then the FFVI part hits and it hits HARD.
They showed FFVIICC Reunion, FFXVI, and Stranger of Paradise trailers during the intermission, but nothing really new.
The second half of the concert opened with FFVIII's Liberi Fatali. I'd realised it was coming because the choir was suddenly there and I'd spotted it in the booklet, but not everyone knew, so the whole hall was like "Ooohh" when the choir started singing. A lot of people also forgot that the song doesn't end on the big note but has a bit of a resolution after and so they started clapping early haha.
While the first half of the concert was either chronological or did medleys, the second half had Roth introduce every segment like "And now, a fan-favourite song from FFVII-X. But first, a DIFFERENT song from another game!"
"Okay, now we're gonna play a classic, Aerith's theme! [cheers] Yeah yeah I know, we're all excited for Remake part 2. Where is it, Square? Anyway, Aerith's theme. But first, Ragnarok, from FFXI!" Tease.
The scenes for Aerith's theme played like a tribute to her and included so many Clerith scenes too, on top of her death scene. Tears.
Rikki, the original vocalist for FFX, sang Suteki Da Ne and I think I've unlocked something spiritually.
Yoko Shimomura was there, and I'd known this in advance, but I hadn't expected to get so emotional about it. Obviously she was there as the composer of FFXV, but she's had such a huge role in my childhood as the composer of Kingdom Hearts that every time I remembered she was actually there, like, in the same room as me and I could see her from my seat, I teared up something awful. Thank you, Ms Shimomura, thank you so much.
They did a fake-out after the Main Theme of Final Fantasy. It was the last *named* song on the programme and they showed the credits, but there were two more songs marked with question marks in the tour booklet, so I knew it wasn't over. Roth left the stage for ten seconds and came back for To Zanarkand.
Obviously, live orchestra To Zanarkand is a religious experience.
After that, the choir stood up and I was chanting "One-Winged Angel One-Winged Angel One-Winged Angel" under my breath. And then it WAS and all the lights went red on the first note literally iconic 15/10 this is what One-Winged Angel deserves.
I *bawled* during the entirety of Not Alone and To Zanarkand, and had to try very hard not to make a sound.
During To Zanarkand, the screen showed a scene of Tidus crying and I was like yeah buddy me too.
As it turned out, I was sliiiightly overdressed in a nice dress and heels in a sea of people wearing merch t-shirts and hoodies. They were correct though, I am INTENSELY jealous of every single piece of merch I saw. But there WAS someone else dressed to the nines, as I spotted a full Remake Wall Market Red Dress Aerith. I also saw one Remake Wall Market Sporty Tifa and two closet cosplay Aeriths, as well as someone wearing Cloud's AC outfit and someone in a Zack wig. There were also a lot of people in what I assume were FFXIV cosplays, but I wouldn't know better haha.
Again, just the experience of being there, together with so many people who have something in common with you, was overwhelming. I guess it's something similar to being at a normal concert, or a big sports event, but the big difference here is that we weren't there *just* for the music for its own sake. We're all fans of the *stories* that the music helps to tell, and that's really special if you ask me.
I bought the FFVIIR Orchestral Arrangement CD (a stupid purchase, as I don't own a CD player, but it gave me so much serotonin), the concert t-shirt, and the tour booklet with interviews and insights. A minute of silence for the Tonberry, Cactuar, Chocobo, and Moogle plushies that I had to leave behind because they wouldn't fit inside my luggage.
While I was in Victoria Coach Station, four whole hours early for my bus (rough day and night), I poured through the tour booklet and I was moved to tears again. These people all put so much love and care into the songs and the concert, and I couldn't be more thankful for all of them.
Also, Distant Worlds Coral is a pun. 35 (as in, 35th anniversary) in Japanese is read "san, go," and "sango" means "coral." Also a play on "choral" music. Everyone here is a dweeb oh my god.
Before the concert, a friend of mine asked me which songs I was expecting to make me cry. While I was wrong in that *every song* made me cry, the only songs on my list that didn't happen were Terra's Theme and the Main Theme of FFVII. Aerith's Theme, Not Alone, To Zanarkand, Main Theme of Final Fantasy, Prelude? All accounted for.
The second I landed in Stansted I found out that Distant Worlds is going to be in Rome in February and YOU KNOW WHAT.
I think that's all? 17/10 amazing spectacular showstopping I'm gonna be thinking about it for the rest of my life have a good day.

A Look At Stuff You Probably Never Heard Of: Final Fantasy Unlimited
Did you know that Final Fantasy had an anime series? Well, this is the second. It’s worth noting that this anime isn’t an adaptation of any Final Fantasy series, instead being it’s own thing. Today, we take a look at... Final Fantasy Unlimited!
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy Unlimited was an adventure-fantasy anime that was animated by Gonzo and aired on TV Tokyo from October 2, 2001 (3 months before the release of FFX) to March 26 of the following year. ADV Films would later acquire the license for release in NA and UK while Madman Entertainment received the license for Australia.
Tumblr media
The story focuses on a pair of siblings named Ai and Yu Hayakawa, who are sister and brother, respectively, as they board a mysterious "Interdimensional Train” that’s rumored to take them to “Wonderland”, where they attempt to search for their missing parents, who previously wrote a book on Wonderland. While on the train, they meet a woman named Lisa Pacifist, who claims to be looking for her boyfriend. Not long after arriving in Wonderland, they meet a man named Kaze, who is also looking for someone, but has forgotten their name. Shortly after, they’re attacked by monsters, only for Kaze to defeat them with his “Magun” (Ma-Gun) and summon Phoenix before leaving the three to go off on his own. As they continue to explore Wonderland, they’re beset by the Four Lords of Gaudium, commanded by their leader, the evil Earl Tyrant.
Tumblr media
Given the time in which the anime was released, CGI is used fairly often, mostly for the Magun and the Interdimensional Train. Needless to say, in this day and age, they look heavily dated. However, it’s worth noting that common Final Fantasy themes return and have new arrangements, such as the Victory Fanfare when a battle is won and the Chocobo Theme.
And now, it is once again time for the Final Recommendation: Never Let Go Of It||Get It||Hold Onto It||Try It||Consider It||Stay Away From It
Honestly, this show is really nothing special... Really, the only interesting thing about this show is Kaze and his Magun. Granted, this happens in pretty much every episode. Some new threat comes in, Ai and Yu do almost nothing against it (with some exceptions) and Lisa, despite being trained in the Kingan Arts (a fighting style), very rarely does anything offensively. When Kaze comes in, the Magun thaws, picks three special canisters of “soil” and when combined inside the gun, he calls forth a Summon to deal with the threat. This happens almost every time.
Funnily enough, the concept of two kids going into the world of Final Fantasy is a lot like World of Final Fantasy. Though, as mentioned before, Ai and Yu don’t do much in fights, instead relying on others to deal with threats. There’s also very little to do with Final Fantasy, outside of common creatures such as Chocobos, Moogles, and Cactuars. And there are the Summons I mentioned; such as Shiva, Typhon, Phoenix, Ifrit, Atomos, and Odin, just to name a few.
Another problem with the show is that the voice acting, at least the English one, isn’t all that good. Yu in particularly, often sounding very bored and uninterested. And Ai (and this is more of an issue with her character), often comes across as bratty or just plain annoying; it doesn’t take much to make her pout or make her cry.
And yet, there are some interesting ideas and setpieces. Weirdly enough, the first few minutes of the first episode feels a lot like Digimon. Heck, the first few minutes feel like Digimon Tamers while some of the rest of the show somewhat feels like Digimon Adventures. Also, there’s a CId. Because there’s always a Cid. No Biggs or Wedge, though.
So, I’ll see you guys next moth for another Final Fantasy series. And this one is based on a game. And so, I’ll leave you with the Victory Fanfare from FFU

In defense of Final Fantasy XIII-2 (long post - mild spoilers ahead!)
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: Sorry for the pics bad quality. I don't own a ps3, my friend lent me one, and I don't really know how to take screenshots, so I did my best to make my photos look visible.  Just don't mind them much.
SO, I'll start by saying that this game IS BAD and it's part of a badly executed and hated trilogy. To be honest, I don't appreciate Final Fantasy XIII much: the first time I played it I was blinded by (light – sorry pun) the visuals and the crystals and everything was shining and whatever. But then I replayed it, and started seeing all the things people were complaining about. As I skipped some scenes to make my second playthrough smoother and faster, I noticed one thing: I was bored. I wasn't enjoying the gameplay, I didn't understand the story in its entirety even if it was my second time playing it. It was one of the first videogames I played in English (hello from Argentina) so I thought that maybe my limitations with the language were dampening my experience, but I asked a friend about the plot and she told me she didn't understand it either.
At any rate, I only played FFXIII because I wanted to play FFXIII-2. I didn't know why, or what, but something in the sequel (cof cof Noel cof) gave me the urge to try and see it for myself. Like I mentioned before, I don't own a ps3, so I had to wait until in 2015 they released the PC ports. I was so happy with this, that I decided to complete the game 100% and see everything it had to offer.
And it has so much to offer! Yes, I won't deny it, the plot is all over the place, and this is where the trilogy goes to hell with its story. But, let's just say we are all aboard the suspension of disbelief train – if we do it, we'll find there's a great story behind all the time gates.
What I enjoyed the most about this sequel was the characters. In XIII I spent HOURS complaining about how annoying everyone was (except for Fang, she's perfect). I couldn't relate to or stand anyone: Lightning became obnoxious with her monotone, Hope was a crybaby with a pretentious revenge plot that didn't work out well, Sahz is just kinda there not contributing anything to the plot, Vanille just has that oh-please-kill-me squeaky voice and Snow is… I hate Snow. I just hate him. The little fondness I have for him stems from my love for Troy Baker's performances, but oh my Etro, Snow is just like a shonen hero in the body of a 21-year-old man. It's just not right, it defies the laws of anime and videogames. Please eradicate him. I hate Square Enix for creating a character like him and forcing me to play as him and use him as a Sentinel because he's just that good in that role, damn him!
But in FFXIII-2? Suddenly, I found myself rooting for Noel and Serah. We get to learn about Noel's backstory, his sad present, his depressing lifestyle. The inexorability of his tale, the imminence of his decaying world. And he becomes such an endearing partner! He's always there to catch Serah if she falls, he's always asking her if she's feeling well. He's proficient, he's efficient, and he's not complaining about stupid stuff. He even doesn't want to talk about his past because he doesn't want to bother Serah – PLEASE Hope just learn something from this man!
And what about Serah? She's not the best character, I give it to you, but she goes from damsel in distress to a badass time traveler in a blink of an eye, and I can certainly get behind that! She's selfless, she faces everything head on, even though she's scared. Her journey began with the search of her sister, but slowly she found herself surrounded by things she couldn't quite comprehend, only to learn that she was more entangled with the fate of the world than she'd anticipated.
And if you do some optional stuff, you can learn things about Mog as well – not only his features are useful (and funny), but he's also the comic relief, adding extra spice to some of the conversations. His exaggerated expressions and his cute voice make up for a good companion.
And I cannot NOT mention Caius (Liam O'Brien I stan). Say whatever about him, but I love his characterization. He's well made. Yes, he wants the same as countless others villains from the FF franchise, but this time I can understand his motives. I feel pity for him. I want to help him. He's cursed beyond redemption. And he's got the best theme song ever.
I can understand these characters. The game spends enough time on everyone so we can learn to care for them, they show us how their relationship nurtures, their dynamics. And I care! This is something XIII-2 made right and XIII did not: I don't care about Lightning, or Hope, or Snow, but I do care that Noel and Serah succeed in their task. I don't care about Barthandelus or the Pulse Fal'Cie, but I do care about Caius getting what he wants. XIII had so many characters but spent too little time in developing (properly, at least) their strengths and weaknesses, but most of all, their relationships. The only real relationship that feels genuine is the one between Fang and Vanille, but that's because they know each other from before the events of the game; whereas the rest of the team feels like… badly placed pieces of puzzle trying to fit.
I know you're gonna say, hey, other FF put together characters that had nothing to do and it worked (yeah, I can mention FFXII and to a certain extent, because Penelo and Vaan were just there for the lulz I guess). In XIII it just didn't work for me: I couldn't root for any of them, and when the game was finished, I was kinda relieved.
That doesn't happen in XIII-2. Maybe they got it, maybe it was out of luck, I don't know, but characters here are better fleshed out, and we can learn to care and root for them, so we want to see it through to the end by their side.
That's just one thing that XIII-2 did better.
Tumblr media
Gameplay was enhanced: now it's faster, more strategic, it doesn't bullshit you like when the leader died in XIII. I'm not going to delve deeper into the Pokémon thing, but yes, you can catch them all, and it adds a lot to the stakes because there's one more thing to gain besides the battle: the monster you're fighting. The game added so many features, it blows me away: the time travelling, opening new paths, closing some; the fragments, which give you experience points and insights in some of the lore; the fragment skills, additional things you can earn or do if certain requirements are met; the f*cking casino that has chocobo races, something that was lacking in the previous game; you can add ADORNMENTS to the monsters you tame to get the ultimate fashion experience. I don't know, there's so much to do, too many timelines to visit. There are too many sidequests, but all of them are linked to the main plot, so you feel like you're still learning things from the main story. Yes, I know, they reuse the same map over and over (Yaschas Massif and Oerba, I'm looking at you), but they compensate with some brand new maps, like Academia 4XX AF which must be my favorite location, so full of life and futuristic style, and the Archylte Steppe, with its weather changing feature.
Sometimes the lack of gameplay slaps you in the face but in the good sense, for instance in Academia 400 AF, where you have a forced battle every two seconds. The sense of urgency and danger is well conveyed through the use of random encounters with enemies. Or when you visit the Void Beyond with Serah, that you're alone, and you have a ghastly Mog following you around, with some of his features blocked. They used everything they had at their disposal, and they used it well. Gone are the days with the endless hallway that we complained so much about in XIII (as if FFX wasn't linear as hell too, but we don't complain about that one – don't dare because it's my favorite FF I warn you): now you can choose how to play, when to play, face that monster or go for an alternative ending. They listened to our whining and gave us this sequel, yes, that nobody asked for, but yet, they did.
There's a huge world-building surrounding all the time travelling thing: in the future, time travel becomes something of an everyday topic, so when you walk around in Academia 4XX you can hear kids playing "let's go and destroy those evil paradox monsters". They built a world around the idea that you can time travel, and that's how Hope gets to live and see every era, monitoring his work that will take centuries to be fulfilled. This is how we should take the time travel in this game, not as doomsday-serious as in Terminator or Back to the Future, but with a more light-hearted approach. I think that's what they tried to do, and it works well that way.
Tumblr media
However light-hearted this game tries to be, it has some sad and depressing bits, mostly around Noel and his way of life. Whenever his theme song kicks-in, you can understand all his character without a word. And that takes me to another thing this game excels at: soundtrack. Now, I won't say it's better than XIII, because the first game has some awesome music as well, but I'll be damned if I don't give enough credit to this game's songs. Yeul's Theme, Noel's Theme, Wishes – you learn everything of these characters by just listening to these beautiful vocals. And I also love that the music took risks, like the Crazy Chocobo theme – I swear that thing is both the best and worst thing out of this game.
Confession time: I can't stop shipping Serah and Noel. I'm just so angry that Snow exists because it forbids this ship in the canon. I have one major complain about it, though: I can't help but notice that both Caius and Noel are infatuated by a fifteen-year-old. I can't discern how much of it is "loyalty beyond boundaries" or "I love her, I truly love her, like I'm in love with her" kind of love, but still, it bugs me a bit. Caius and Yeul's relationship feels more natural, given that he's her guardian, and he acts upon this role the whole game, until the end, where Noel clearly states that Yeul always came back because she wanted to stay by Caius's side. So it leaves me wondering. And Lightning Returns pretty much confirmed to us that Noel was in love with Yeul, which of COURSE I don't LIKE at ALL but I'll roll with it. I'm just glad that we got XIII-2 ending where Jason Marsden's voice breaks when he yells Serah's name. They gave me enough content for a thousand fics. Let's pretend that Noel's attitude in LR doesn't happen, ok?
Tumblr media
You can hate this game. I can't blame you for it. Nobody wanted it, it doesn't connect well to its predecessor unless you read two novellas, and it forcefully leads us to Lightning Returns where, I can safely say, the plot goes to hell, almost literally. But this game exists, and it doesn't deserve half the hate it receives. If you play it it's because you enjoyed XIII (I highly doubt that you'll make yourself go through this suffering if you didn't like the first one – if you do, I just don't know why you hate yourself so much), and if you did, there's no way you're not going to see all the good things they added in this one. Enjoy it for what it is, and not for what it's not, or for what it could've been.
I sometimes wonder what could've happened if this game didn't have "Final Fantasy" on its cover. Because the time travel is intelligent and fun to play, the world-building around the Farseers and this bleak future is interesting and well made – the problem with this game is that it's a Final Fantasy and that it's a sequel to an already quite finished story. It feels like they forced a sequel, and maybe they did. But I, for once, am glad they did.

CHARACTER FILES
Tumblr media
BASICS.
FULL NAME:  Tidus  ( originally Tiida, which means ‘sun’ ) NICKNAME :  // GENDER :  male HEIGHT :  5′9′‘ // 175 cm AGE :  17 ZODIAC :  his true date of birth is unknown, so we can’t be sure. if we follow the trend of also Zidane and Squall etc DOBs, Tidus would be born on October 10th and be a Libra. but given he’d be the most dysfunctional Libra ever I personally doubt it ahah I headcanon him being born on July 19th, the day FFX was first released, so his zodiac sign here would be Cancer. SPOKEN LANGUAGES :  common Spiran, tiny bits of Al Bhed learnt during the pilgrimage.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS.
HAIR COLOR :  blond with darker roots EYE COLOR :  deep blue SKIN TONE :  tanned BODY TYPE :  athletic, yet slightly underweight and slim DOMINANT HAND :  right POSTURE :  straight, healthy MOST NOTICEABLE FEATURE :  his vivid eye-color, probably the contrast between skin tone and hair color too; weird clothes
CHILDHOOD
FIRST WORDS :  probably the common ones all toddlers learn first, or his own name SIBLINGS :  none PARENTS :  unnamed mother & Jecht PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT :  his mother would difficultly care and hardly give proper attention to Tidus whenever her husband was home from work; but she was still a very docile and condescending kind of parental figure to the boy, when raising him till the age of 7-8. She’d often cater all her strengths and attentions to Jecht, sometimes ignoring or neglecting the boy’s cries or pleas till her husband would make her notice; as a child, Tidus simply didn’t notice this side of her, and instead thought his father would keep her away from him on purpose - a fact that did add fuel to his hatred for Jecht. His father would be home way less than Tidus’ mother, because of his work. He was a rougher and brusque type of parent and despite loving his son, he could not express it clearly. Still, hid father did sparkle in Tidus his sense of competitivness and his passion for blitzball, no matter if the man would often verbally belittle his weak son’s poor attemps with a blitz ball -- that’s the type of father he has believed to know. Still, Jecht was involved in his growth, the novel even reveals it was him who taught Tidus how to swim as a child. Once Jecht disappeared, Tidus’ mother fell cronically ill and depressed, ceasing most likely to care or tend to her son as time in solitude went by, and eventually died shortly after Auron came to Zanarkand. From age 8 onward, Tidus has been in Auron’s care.
ADULT LIFE.
OCCUPATION :  Ace Player of the Abes Team back in Dream Zanarkand; Guardian when brought to Spira; post X-2, Tidus returns being a Blitzball player (most likely playing for the Aurochs) and quickly regains his once-lost fame. CURRENT RESIDENCE :  Dream Zanarkand, boathouse in A-East district (childhood) // Besaid Island, then Bevelle (post X-2) CLOSE FRIENDS :  all the other guardians, plus Yuna, really, especially Wakka and Rikku; a part of me really wants to add Clasko to this, too, while he’s obviously not as close as the others, for Tidus. RELATIONSHIP STATUS :  single, then in a relationship with Yuna DRIVER’S LICENSE :  Dream Zanarkand had cars and all but I guess he never got a license back there, and that kind of stuff just don’t exist in Spira; he has the chocobo riding license! CRIMINAL RECORD :  by Spiran Temple standards and teachings, he’s accused of heresy for having entered the sacred Cloisters when still not a guardian twice; he’s also accused of having conspired with Al Bhed and joined their insurrection back at Home, and of having interrupted an important Yevon matrimony in the holy capital. He’s probably also accused of having opposed and most likely killed warrior monks during the wedding crash, not to count Guado guards in Macalania and Home. He escaped prison and became a ‘most wanted’, too, with a bounty on his head. Plus, opposing Yunalesca and Yu Yevon could be associated with (Spiran/Yevonite) blasphemy -- despite them really being both the bad guys of the situation here. I guess the accusations all fall with the crisis of the Temple Spira faces and the disappearance of Sin but... god, Tidus... [update: I’ve been reminded in my notes I forgot to mention he did partake in the murder of Seymour, a Maester of Yevon, and of his accusations of treason, not to mention the fact Spira did believe Tidus and the others had killed Kinoc too. The situation just keeps getting worse HAHA ]
MISCELLANEOUS.
CHARACTER THEME SONG :  here it is because I’m basic, in 4 different, beautiful versions HOBBIES TO PASS THE TIME :  swimming, playing blitzball, cooking and eating, reading Al Bhed primers, practising fighting and time-related spells, napping, daydreaming MENTAL ILLNESS :  anxiety disorders, fear of abandonment PHYSICAL ILLNESS :  none

Sorry if you've gotten these before, but is there music and/or singers whose sound/voice you like, but the colour is disagreeable, and vice versa? :-)
actually, nobodys asked me that before! in general if the color bothers me i end up disliking the sound which is one reason why andrew bird is on thin fucking ice bc his lyrics and instrumentals are great but his voice is this shade of muddy green that just isnt super pleasant to look at. but there also arent a lot of colors that i dislike
this isnt quite answering your question but sometimes there are bands i dont listen to a bunch bc the colors of the instruments and singers voices are individually very nice but they dont mesh well together so its really discordant (lmao the first example that came to mind was the chocobo theme from ffx-2)
so i guess the short answer is that if i dont like the color of an instrument or voice i end up disliking the source of the color

FLASHBack: Week 16 [First Class FLASHBack] - FF7: About Random Battles
FF7 - Chocolate, a callback to an Easter Egg hidden in an earlier Legendary Frog Flash about the Legend of Zelda, The Return of Ganondorf. Return of Ganondorf was uploaded on 20 June 2003, and in later years, when Blanchette was archiving his content to YouTube, he produced a Creators' Commentary video version of it, featuring Luke de Ayora, who voiced Link and had contributions to other Legendary Frog flashes as well.
FF7 - Tifa's Goods, an innuendo-based bait & switch.
FF7 - Aeris and Cloud's Date, A nice bit of dark slapstick comedy that riffs off of the fact that the soundtrack that plays behind Final Fantasy 7's infamous multi-path dating scene, in which Cloud can go on a date with either Aeris, Tifa, Yuffie, or Barret, determined by a hidden variable that is affected by the choices the player made in the game up to that point, is titled Interrupted by Fireworks.
FF7 - Yuffie Joins the Party, which reminds everyone of Yuffie's defining character moment. (So notorious, they named a TV Trope after it: Wutai Theft. Not that I'm recommending anyone go to TV Tropes, it will eat your soul. But if you do, note that the page quote on the page explaining one of their most used sub-pages "Fridge Logic" originates from another one of Legendary Frog's Flashes.)
FF7 - Cait Sith in the Casino, a short gag based on Cait Sith's Limit Break.
Blanchette's collaboration with the Super Flash Bros was not the first time he would partner with other Flash creators, nor would it be the last. Many of his Flash successes sprung from his ability to bring together Newgrounds' best and brightest together onto a large project that would simply blow away the audience. Next week, we'll look at another creator who started out working solo, but then brought in other talent, giving his creative partners the springboard needed to become household names in their own right (at least in the households of video game and animation enthusiasts).   Please note however that next week, FLASHBack will not be happening on Thursday, but will instead be delayed until Saturday, 4/13.

Have you written any fanfic or made any fanart? Fanfic ‘ideas’ yes but have not branched out into the writing world yet.12. Most bizarre game you’ve ever played? Howdy! You seem yo be an expert on Final Fantsy and I had some questions if that's okay! Like, are all of the games connectect, from 1 to whatever the latest one was (15 i think)? Also, I only know about FF7, would you say I have to play all of them bc they are all important? (I just don't see how Cloud and Noct i think that's his name are connected lol).
no, all the main final fantasy games have different plots, set in different worlds and with different characters (some of them have sequels or prequels but those are still considered the number of their main game like final fantasy vii - crisis core - or final fantasy x-2)
the first games (and the fabula nova cristallis aka the xiii and the xv) were linked by a common theme (crystals and the battle between light and darkness) but thats it.
And no you absolutely dont have to play all of them just those you find interesting. Personally my favourite are FFIV, FFVI, FFVII and FFX.
from I to FFVI they were all for very old consoles (like gba) so unless you are a fan of vintage videogames id tell you to just dont consider them because they can be a huge pain in the ass to play.
Final Fantasy VII is my favourite (along with all the compilation expect for dirge of cerberus that i dont remeber nor particularly care for) was the first one for PlayStation 1 (originally) the graphic is terrible but honestly its the one that i had more fun playing (i think a huge bonus to having fun with this kind of games is the OST for battles and ffvii has the best ones also the Materia system for spells and abilities is the one i found more engaging).
i dont know much about the newer games (except for FFXIII which was a huge let down when i first played it and apparently had a bunch of sequels i dont even know why because i dont know one person who actually enjoyed playing it). i never played FFXV and never will because you dont have female party members but everyone says its pretty good at least gameplay wise (the plot... eh)
And if you are itnerested there are a lot of sidegames that i consider really valid: Final Fantasy Tactics (i played the advance one), dissidia opera omnia which is free for phone and its basically a huge crossover between all the final fantasy games, and Chocobo’s Dungeon which i never played but i know its considered really well

BASICS.
full name.   Tidus pronunciation.    Teedus nickname.  Ace, Star Player, Jecht’s son gender.  Male (he/him) height.   5′9″ or 175 cm age.  17-18  &&  20 in ‘Will’  zodiac.   His true date of birth is unknown, so we can’t be sure. if we follow the trend of also Zidane and Squall etc DOBs, Tidus would be born on October 10th and be a Libra. but given he’d be the most dysfunctional Libra ever I personally doubt it ahah I headcanon him being born on July 19th, the day FFX was first released, so his zodiac sign here would be Cancer. spoken languages.   Common Spiran which is the same language spoken in his Zanarkand, tiny bits of Al Bhed learnt during the pilgrimage.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS.
hair color.   Dark blond with brown roots. As a child, he had light-brown hair. eye color.   Sea-blue irises, the same as his mother’s. skin tone.     Quite tanned, mostly the result of hours spent outside - probably practising under the sun. Actually, he isn’t fair-skinned even as a child - nor his parents seem to present a particular pale tone of skin which may have genetic reasons involved, but teen/adult Tidus would still be more tanned than he himself looked like as a seven-year-old boy. body type.   He has an athletic built, which comes from his years of swimming and blitzball practice. He’s a little underweight for his height and age, though. At the age of seventeen, Tidus’ muscle form is already very defined and toned. accent.  Tidus present a rather funny and child-like sounding accent most of the time - or when he’s not being too serious or firm; for example, his original dub has him ending sentences in --SSU, which is a very informal and friendly deflexion, also used by very young people. That makes it sound like he sometimes changes words in a rather playful manner (in the japanese dub), which would simply translate in him just sounding very informal. voice.   He has a very sharp voice, that leans on higher tones when he’s relaxed or excited. When more serious, instead, he tends to drop some tones in his voice pitch, but he doesn’t really notice it, and when he does it doesn’t bother Tidus.  dominant hand.  He is right-handed, he’s seen throwing the ball in Blitz with that and he is also seen mostly kicking the ball with his right leg too. posture.   He’s an athlete, swimming agonistically has proved to make back muscles stronger and firmer, so standing correctly straight comes as something natural and effortless to him. Still, Tidus tends to slouch forward very often when he sits, it’s very rare to see him sitting straight anywhere when he’s made wait long periods of time or when he’s particularly bored. In those cases, he really looks nothing like the athlete he is -- as he props his weight whenever it feels more comfortable. scars.   Nothing major or too visible like his father, the few scars he’d have would mainly be the result of the most physical Blitz matches he has attended or just peculiar and tougher battles fought during the pilgrimage. tattoos.   // birthmarks.   // most noticeable feature(s).   His vivid eye-color, probably the contrast between skin tone and hair color too; weird clothes for Spiran standards.
CHILDHOOD.
place of birth.  Dream Zanarkand. hometown.   Dream Zanarkand. birth weight.   7 pounds. birth height.   Around 20 inches. manner of birth.   Natural birth. first words.   The common ones all toddlers learn first, or his own name. siblings.   // parents.  Unnamed mother and Jecht (father) parental involvement.   His mother would difficultly care and hardly give proper attention to the young Tidus whenever her husband was home from work; she was still a very docile and gentle figure to the boy, a composed yet often distracted kind of mother. She’d often cater all her strengths and attentions to Jecht, sometimes ignoring or neglecting the child’s cries or pleas till her husband would make her notice at last; as a child, Tidus simply didn’t notice this side of her or chose to forget about it, thinking instead his father would keep her away from him on purpose to monopolize her affection - a fact that did add to his childish reasons to hate Jecht. His father would be home for way less time than Tidus’ mother, because of his work. He was a rougher and brusque type of parent and despite loving his son, he could never express it clearly nor found a way to show him. Still, his father was somehow the one who sparkled in Tidus his sense of competitiveness and his passion for blitzball, no matter if the man would often verbally belittle his weak son’s poor attempts with a ball – that’s the type of father Tidus has believed to know. Still, Jecht was involved in his growth, the novel even reveals it was him who taught Tidus how to swim as a child. Once Jecht disappeared and was believed dead by his fans and city, Tidus’ mother fell chronically ill and depressed, ceasing to care or tend to her son. She died of sheer heartbreak shortly after Auron came to Zanarkand to become Tidus’ guardian.
ADULT LIFE.
occupation.   Ace Player of the Abes Team back in Dream Zanarkand; Guardian when brought to Spira; post X-2, Tidus returns being a Blitzball player (most likely playing for the Aurochs) and quickly regains his once-lost fame and popularity. current residence.  Verse dependent. Dream Zanarkand before the events of FFX. Right after X-2, Besaid, but it is heavily implied he left the island to move to Bevelle a couple of years later his return, living near what’s called Mika-Road, the recently built street which leads to the new blitz stadium. close friends.  Yuna, Wakka, Rikku, Auron, Kimahri, Lulu. A part of me really wants to add Clasko to this, too, while he’s obviously not as close as the others for Tidus. relationship status.   Canon-ly speaking, in a relationship with Yuna. financial status.  I’d say, he’s in the financial middle class. Considering Spira’s hierarchy, nothing can really top the clergy, the monks, the priests and priestesses, not to mention the ex Maesters which I would consider the higher class. As Blitzball is considered an integral part of Spira, but it is not a humble job, that’s the class he would be part of. driver’s license.   Dream Zanarkand had cars and all but I guess he never got a license back there, and that kind of stuff just don’t exist in Spira; he has the chocobo riding license, haha, directly earned it through Calm Lands weird races. criminal record.  By Spiran Temple standards and teachings, he’s accused of heresy for having entered the sacred Cloisters when still not a guardian twice; he’s also accused of having conspired with Al Bhed and joined their insurrection back at Home, and of having interrupted an important Yevon wedding in the holy capital. He’s also accused of having opposed and most likely killed warrior monks during the wedding crash, not to count Guado guards in Macalania and Home. He escaped prison and became a ‘most wanted’, too, with a bounty on his head. Plus, opposing Yunalesca and Yu Yevon could be associated with blasphemy. He did partake in the murder of Seymour, a Maester of Yevon, not to mention the fact Spira did believe Tidus and the others had killed Kinoc too. I guess the accusations all fell with the following crisis of the Temple and the disappearance of Sin but… vices.   Being too loud, daydreaming, being too impatient. Pride.
SEX & ROMANCE.
sexual orientation.  Heterosexual romantic orientation.  Heteroromantic preferred emotional role.   submissive  |  dominant  |  switch preferred sexual role.   submissive  |  dominant  |  switch (?) libido.  Average for his age and curiosity, I guess. A little above that if we consider the novel. turn on’s.  // turn off’s.  // love language.   He’s anything but subtle when it comes to relationships and partners, even to a fault sometimes. He is a deeply affectionate boy despite the way he was raised, so he likes to prove it physically: hugs, hand-holding, pecks, kisses - love and tender signs and gestures, little favors and gifts, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. On a darker note, I guess it’s to be expected given his fear of loss and abandonment, but his love language is sincere nonetheless. relationship tendencies.   He was and is still seen as a charismatic boy. At home, he’d have many fans and girls fawning over him at every given occasion over him (and his bond with Jecht) - and while the attention is something that did fuel him, sorta, I bet it was something that was seen as a way to get into first relationships. Maybe even out of fear of solitude. It changes once he leaves Zanarkand for good, I guess his devotion for Yuna speaks louder than any other word.
MISCELLANEOUS.
character’s theme song.    X hobbies to pass time.   Swimming, playing blitzball, cooking and eating, reading Al Bhed primers, practising fighting and time-related spells, napping, daydreaming. mental illnesses.   Anxiety disorders, fear of abandonment. physical illnesses.   // left or right-brained.   Right-brained. fears.   Loneliness, to disappear, abandonment, silence. self-confidence level.  It’s a rollercoaster... it goes from high to low depending on both situation and mood. vulnerabilities.  To be considered weak, or too emotive. Also... Yuna?
