Ah yes. The most dreaded day of the year and it’s on a Monday.

KIDDING

Valentines is when you get extra money from your parents to buy chocolate for your self ‘classmates’ but this year? They came with you to the grocery store to shop the night before and basically told you to grab ‘buy as much chocolate as you want’. Initially, you looked at your parents as if they had lost their minds. The next thing you knew, you had a basket filled with Kisses, bite-sized chocolates, chocolate bars but most of it you didn’t even put in the basket, your parents did. You only grabbed several bars of rare dark chocolate and milk chocolate.

Bringing the chocolate to school is the hard part. You had to bring extra bags so it can easily be given to others. The smell of chocolate wafted into the classroom when you entered. “How much chocolate did you just bring Y/N?” Beidou came over. “You smell like chocolate Y/N! Can I have some?” Xiangling cheerfully came over. “Sure! My parents told me I can get as much chocolate as I want so I cleared the whole store.” You opened the drawstring bag wide for her. “Wow you have a lot!” Pointing to the 2 other similar bags you have with you. “I think this is your parents telling you to get into a relationship already.” Yelan chuckled, grabbing a bar of Snickers. “They can wait until after college then.” You joked. With the title of ‘Most Approachable Person’ granted to you by one of your teachers, you doubt you’d have anyone actually seeing you that way. Even if anyone confessed to you today, you’d tell them you have priorities when your heart really belonged to another. And on this day, you are not going to think about him. “I have to go around the sections by recess or lunch.” You reminded yourself.

When the first recess hit, you grabbed a bag of chocolate to sprint to the next classroom, your former classmates in the section Inazuma. “Hi Y/N! What do you have there?” Yoimiya greeted you. She looked into the bag that you were holding. “Chocolates for everyone?” She chirped. “Yuck! Why does it reek of chocolate?” Scaramouche boomed behind your back, glaring at you while he went to his seat. You paid him no mind. “Aww you’re so sweet Y/N!” Miko came around and dug her hand into your bag while patting your head. “You can leave it here. We’ll distribute it later.”

You came back into your classroom to grab your snack bag before going to the school cafeteria to sit with your friends. “So did you do it?” Yelan questioned. “Do what?” You asked her and yourself. You thought hard for a minute as she and the others just stared at you. Certainly you’re not missing anything right? “Do what?”

“Did you just forget to give chocolate to your boyfie?” Beidou brought up, you just glared at her. “You all should already know that pigs will fly before I do that.” You munched on your chocolate, moaning at the bitterness. He wasn’t even there in the first place. “No way I’m shooting a shot when I don’t even know if I’m going to hit the target.” “Y/N dear, you only had 90% bars when you came in this morning. Perhaps another has already caught your sights?” Ningguang eyed the bar you’re munching on, the 70% bar you got from Ayato, a fellow dark chocolate connoisseur as you would put it. “I doubt they’ll be able to pull them out of their years-long crush! HAHA!” Beidou feeds Nigguang a chocolate-covered strawberry. “Yech stop making me feel single you two.”

The number one thing you hate about Valentines: people can’t shut up about their lovelives and prying into another’s. Ningguang and Beidou are already getting it on, Yelan didn’t look like she was interested in anyone so that leaves you to be teased.

The afternoon went by uneventfully. You went by Mondstat to give a share of your chocolate to them, exchanged chocolate with friends, and gave some chocolate to your teachers too. Now, you were helping clean the classroom, guilty that the chocolate wrappers could’ve filled the bucket by now. Just even thinking about leaving a grumpy Xiao with an overflowing trash can makes you feel anxious to the core. It wasn’t like he was alone, he had Ganyu and Shenhe with him but certainly he’s the one tossing the trash into the incinerator. You just silently helped him. On the way to the incinerator, you encounter Venti. “Xiao!” Taking the cue that he wanted some alone time with Xiao, receiving no greeting from the upbeat boy, you went ahead.

“... Ayaka is as perfect as a person can be.” You know that voice anywhere. In your peripheral vision you see Kazuha and Aether standing outside their classroom door. You didn’t need to hear that. He thinks she’s perfect? Now, how can you even compete with that? You sped up your pace not wanting to hear the rest of the conversation. Eavesdropping isn’t very nice either.

You couldn’t breathe. Either from the brisk walking you’ve been doing to finish up cleaning or from the statement you heard earlier. Blood pumping in your ears, you dumped the contents of the trash can in the larger one right beside the incinerator before heading back. There’s no way chocolate can help you out of the mental hole you fell in. Why do you always have to be digging your own grave?

When you got back to the classroom, you quickly put the trash can back in its place. Ganyu and Shenhe were nowhere to be found so you went ahead and gathered your belongings after a quick visit to the lavatory. No one was at the toilets either, looks like everyone was already out. You definitely need to go to your happy place.

You completely forgot that today was Valentines. Of course, the arcade was going to be filled. Putting your earphones in, you pass time winning jackpots while the couples around you look at you with jealousy. The emptiness in your heart is slowly consuming you. They don’t know how many depressive episodes you’ve been into to master how to win jackpots in all these arcade machines.

The amount of tickets you got became way too much for you to handle even with a basket. How much money did you even have in your card? You couldn’t recall. It was a birthday gift from Yelan anyway. You just fed and fed the ticket counting machine on and on and on until you totalled a little bit over 5000 tickets before getting it registered into your card. You were getting ready to leave when a call comes into your phone, it gets directly routed to your earphones. “Girlie, why are you alone in the arcade?” Childe. How the heck did he get your number? Turning around, you see Lumine and Childe looking at you from the crane machine area. “Leave me alone.” He very visibly shivered, probably wasn’t expecting that from the Most Approachable Person on campus. You hung up and headed home.

“They weren’t like that this morning.” Lumine recounts. Childe looks at his phone, Scaramouche’s message on the screen. ‘Look at this loser, playing alone in the arcade.’ Then an image of you, playing a crane game for tickets, bands of tickets bunched up around your arms. Eyes empty, dead looking at the crane.
