Was reading your tags on that, and you reminding me about the fact that things not created by humans can't be copyrighted (I think that's roughly how it's said) made me have what's probably not a great practical idea, but kind of funny to think of
Maybe the way to combat ai artists is simply to take anything they generate and sell it on mugs and stuff. I almost said steal, but then I thought about it and that's the whole point, legally it isn't stealing because they straight up don't own it
Maybe it would kill some interest in it for them if under every twitter post where they're like "check this out", someone just replied with a link to where you can buy it on a shirt, do the same with that guy who won an art contest
Might be less appealing when you know anyone who can market things better than you can make money of what you had an ai generate, steal the wind out of your sails, and the law is 100% on their side
so from what I understand, and I am not an artist and have not been hardcore following this, but the concrete threats to artists from ai art have been twofold:
individual commissions for things like book covers, and things like internal illustrations that usually you commission a human to do but the idea being "oh well if I can get AI to do it I can save money", and
there is already worry that in animation which is a brutal and terrible industry to begin with I think Netflix already made a show where it used AI to generate backgrounds rather than human artists?
and the copyright thing is just going to make the first point completely moot. like, we saw cases where publishing houses for fairly respectable book authors used AI to make a cover of what was expected to be a fairly mainstream new release. but if the ruling comes down that you can't copyright that at all? publishing houses aren't going to do it, which means it starts to trickle down to anyone being respectable isn't going to want to risk it. like, you think Wizards of the Coast or Magic the Gathering are going to risk having their art not copyrighted? hell no. which means that even if you still get people using it for book covers or internal illustrations etc etc, those are probably people who..... would not have gone out and commissioned artists anyways, bc they're the people that are running the scam kickstarters and just don't have connections to artists and don't know what they're doing in the first place. so whether or not that is even a niche that artists will lose jobs from is questionable; so long as artists are not losing jobs from the big companies, AI is not destroying artists' jobs
the animation problem from my understanding is a bit of a trickier one, because if you take a base, and then a human changes it, you end up with something that is still human-edited enough to be copyrightable. but most of what I know about the animation industry is that it is total hell and artists are getting worked to the bone but also there has been a lot of really interesting even in 2D animation ways of adding 3D rendering in backgrounds (my friend was telling me about how Demon Slayer was doing that in some scenes?) so like. they're doing their own thing with new technologies and have been consistently and tbh might make some interesting stuff out of it, although still shouldn't be stealing to shortcut the work, just, there's a lot more human processing once a base is produced that is involved there.
I think potentially one of the biggest dangers about the current AI image creation is exactly fake photo generation est as they start overcoming the six-finger problem and potential for vast quantities of political propaganda to be made and how to either stop that from happening or get browser inserts that can tell people if a photo is likely AI generated. but that is an entirely different problem.

What Is a Brokerage Account? Definition, How to Choose, and Types
Tumblr media
A brokerage account is a type of financial account that allows individuals to buy and sell various securities, such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and other investment products. These accounts are offered by brokerage firms, which act as intermediaries between investors and the financial markets. Here's a breakdown of brokerage accounts:
Definition:
A brokerage account serves as a platform for investors to access the financial markets and execute trades. When an investor opens a brokerage account, they deposit funds into the account and use those funds to buy securities or other investment products. Brokerage accounts may be held with full-service brokerage firms, online brokerages, or discount brokerages, each offering different levels of services, features, and costs.
How to Choose:
When choosing a brokerage account, investors should consider several factors to ensure that the account meets their needs and preferences. Here are some key considerations:
Type of Brokerage Firm: Determine whether you prefer a full-service brokerage, which offers personalized investment advice and a wide range of services (but may come with higher fees), or an online/discount brokerage, which provides self-directed trading at lower costs but with fewer advisory services.
Fees and Commissions: Compare the fees and commissions charged by different brokerage firms for trades, account maintenance, and other services. Look for transparent fee structures and consider how fees may impact your investment returns over time.
Investment Offerings: Evaluate the range of investment products available through the brokerage account, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, options, and other securities. Choose a brokerage that offers the types of investments you want to trade or invest in.
Trading Platform and Tools: Assess the trading platform and tools provided by the brokerage for research, analysis, and trade execution. Look for user-friendly interfaces, real-time market data, charting tools, mobile trading apps, and other features that align with your trading preferences and requirements.
Customer Service and Support: Consider the quality of customer service and support offered by the brokerage, including accessibility, responsiveness, and availability of assistance via phone, email, chat, or in-person consultations.
Regulatory Compliance and Security: Ensure that the brokerage firm is properly regulated by relevant authorities, such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States or the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the United Kingdom. Verify the security measures in place to protect your account information and assets from unauthorized access or cyber threats.
Account Minimums and Requirements: Check whether the brokerage imposes minimum deposit requirements or account balance thresholds, as well as any eligibility criteria for opening an account, such as residency status or age restrictions.
Types:
There are several types of brokerage accounts, each designed to meet different investment objectives and preferences:
Cash Account: A standard brokerage account where investors use cash deposited into the account to buy and sell securities. Cash accounts do not allow for margin trading (borrowing funds to leverage investments).
Margin Account: A brokerage account that allows investors to borrow funds from the brokerage to buy securities, using existing holdings as collateral. Margin accounts enable investors to leverage their investments, potentially amplifying returns but also increasing risk.
Retirement Accounts: Specialized brokerage accounts designed for retirement savings, such as Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and 401(k) rollover accounts. These accounts offer tax advantages and specific contribution limits and withdrawal rules.
Managed Accounts: Accounts managed by professional portfolio managers or investment advisors on behalf of clients. Managed accounts typically involve higher fees but offer personalized investment management and advice.
Education Savings Accounts: Accounts designed for saving and investing for educational expenses, such as 529 college savings plans or Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs).

Stagid Buy In
Tumblr media
If you are an American consumer who wishes to purchase Stagid prescription drugs online, then you will need to understand the meaning of the product's brand name and generic equivalent. Stagid is the brand of a number of different prescription drugs sold by online pharmacies. It has also been known as the Old English term for "pills". Stagid is a trademark of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its parent agency, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The reason why Stagid is referred to as the Old English equivalent of prescription drugs is because it is actually the original name of the drug. Prior to http://site29138.onlc.eu/ , Stagid was marketed as Stag Oil and later as Stagid. Prior to that, Stagid was marketed under its own name, which may have been confusing to the consumers. In fact, Stagid was itself banned in several countries before it received a U.S. commercial launch.
To this day, there are still quite a few online pharmacies selling Stagid products. Some of them sell Stagid analogs, which are basically identical to the Stagid formulation but without the "Old English" name. Stagid analogs are not subject to the same stringent quality control measures, as do Stagids. But, Stagid analogs are available to both online pharmacies and their physical brick and mortar counterparts.
To make matters worse, there are actually online websites that claim to sell all kinds of prescription drugs, including Stagid. These fraudulent sites can sell Stagid under the guise of another brand. Customers should beware of online pharmacy scams. Stagid online pharmacies are easy prey for identity thieves. It is also possible for a fraudulent Stagid online pharmacy to "load" itself up with customers' credit card information. Once this happens, the "online pharmacy" starts peddling counterfeit Stagid drugs.
The federal Food and Drug Administration do not monitor Stagid sales, but only the authorization of a particular manufacturer. There are three major manufacturers in the United States: Jansook, Kalo, and Teva. So, if you happen to run across an online pharmacy offering Stagid, you may want to check it out just to make sure it is legitimate. Or, you can ask your pharmacist that online pharmacies he/she recommends. If you do not know any pharmacists, you can always call the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy to find out more information on Stagid prescription drugs.
Although fraudulent online pharmacies can be a threat to online buyers, the real threat comes from online pharmacy scams. These so-called pharmacies are run by crooks who disguise themselves as online pharmacies to fool people into paying for Stagid prescription drugs that they do not even possess. If you suspect that you are approached by one of these crooks, just look at their website and make sure it is real before making a purchase. Also check for contact information such as a phone number and/or an address. If you see any of this, do not buy from them, and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission and the Secret Service. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if that particular online pharmacy has ever had any complaints lodged against it.

Private Label Supplement Manufacturing | Private Label Supplements
I bet that is one second in which I'm going to reply the query I simply requested of this articles readers. In the above related article I published to go along with this text the writer states those organic tablets to deal with psoriasis will NOT be to be had to folks that are on Medicaid and Medicare due to charge. All the drug agencies who've created their personal organic psoriasis remedies have driven human beings on private label supplements and Medicare farfar from receiving remedy with those tablets thru the excessive value of the medication.
The spin is some of those organic drug agencies have applications to deliver the medication loose to low earnings sufferers who've personal coverage simplest.
These organic psoriasis remedies aren't existence saving so Medicare and Medicaid do now no longer apprehend the inflated value via way of means of drug agencies as a vital price. The drug agencies realize this and need it this manner. Back in 2003 whilst those organic psoriasis remedies have been coming into the drug market they have been less expensive and coverage agencies picked up the charges if an affordable deductible turned into paid.
I've come to my end approximately why this and different excessive drug costs are going on that maintain a number of those tablets out of the attain of many folks that are on Medicare and Medicaid.
When those scams to advantage non-public wealth come to mild as withinside the opioid epidemic this is ongoing now in which billions of greenbacks are being paid out via way of means of the drug agencies to the states our congressional representatives who profited off of opioids aleven though insider buying and selling investments stroll round without a threat of repercussion for his or her involvement withinside the scheme.
If you study Canada that is a rustic in which authorities has to pay for ALL healthcare charges you'll see the bottom costs on exceptional tablets everywhere due to the fact the authorities forces costs right all the way down to decrease authorities expenditures. All the drug agencies that prepare excessive earnings drug plans to fill their wallet are destroyed with out query via way of means of the Canadian authorities. In the U.S. our congressional representatives steer concept farfar from destroying immoderate earnings taking via way of means of the drug agencies due to the fact they're invested in those drug agencies for his or her personal non-public earnings.
I simply guess ya if someone received get entry to to the investments of our congressional leaders they might locate many times of drug organisation investments who've extraordinarily excessive drug costs on famous wished tablets that in reality paintings to enhance a individuals health.
When Humira comes off of patent in 2023 it'll ship the producing of it to the general drug agencies and drop the charge to marketplace cost which can also additionally suggest absolutely each person on Medicaid and Medicare may have a threat to be dealt with with it.
I examine it might cost a little a drug organisation over 1000000000 greenbacks to broaden a drug however that is "Bull Hicky". For one assume a drug organisation isn't always a drug organisation with out a crew of researchers. In truth a drug organisation is not anything however researchers. A drug organisation after it begins offevolved creating a benefit from the medication they produced withinside the first region has to finances for a everlasting studies crew to create destiny drug profits. The studies crew receives its paychecks from preceding launched drug income constantly and for all time and NO recouping of charges for the improvement of a brand new drug is ever wished. A drug organisation is only a massive laboratory complete of scientists that receives a commission often to create new tablets and do regular experiments.
Popular new releases of medication are simply overall earnings magnets for drug agencies and congressional representatives. It's just like the metropolis or town you stay in making you consider that the value to cope with an difficulty will exceed the taxes already gathered to pay for the team of workers and assets to cope with the troubles which are already funded.
Congressional representatives do now no longer need their investments checked out however whilst public call for dictated that it grow to be regulation to have their investments made public they needed to deliver into the general public call for and folded to it. Congress couldn't satisfy themselves on the price of U.S. Citizens with riches galore thru insider buying and selling which they assume they've a proper to do due to the fact there is no criminal entity with a purpose to punish them.
After the marketplace for organic,s began out to develop the marketplace have become hijacked via way of means of the rich as a manner to growth their non-public values via way of means of growing the costs and advertising those tablets to the rich and themselves who're the rich for huge earnings taking. People who have been getting their psoriasis tablets paid for thru their coverage agencies have been being dropped off their coverage plans.
With those drug agencies as is with any enterprise who holds a monopoly on any wished or famous product thru authorities mandate the better costs simplest the rich will pay are dictated this means that much less manufacturing might be wished that interprets into decrease manufacturing charges and the identical or better earnings stages are kept. Production at marketplace call for way better production charges with decrease earnings margins

“Mushtari Hoshyar Bash”
Threat of fraud to buyer is 90% and to seller is 10%.
10-COMMON MISTAKES
1) Eligibility of seller to sell a property i.e. plot, house, shop, agricultural land, etc.
Who can sell the property?
1. Original owner,
2. Power of attorney/Mukhtar Nama,
3. Guardian having permission to sell the property,
4. Any person appointed by an Authority/Court for selling/auction a property.
One important point is necessary to state that Property Dealer has no authority/right to sell any property rather he is playing only the role of agent just to earn his commission. So, be aware! Never ever enter into sale agreement with property dealer. Such agreement may be resulted in fraud.
2) Copies of which documents are required from above eligible persons?
1. Fresh Fard-e-Malkiet,
2. Registry/Sale Deed, (Eligibility 1)
3. Copy of power of attorney/Mukhtar Nama (Eligibility 2)
4. Copy of Guardian Certificate and Document of permission to sell the property, (Eligibility 3).
5. Copy of publication/auction of property (Eligibility 4).
3) Verification of Documents?
All copies of documents shall produce before the concerned authorities i.e. Patwari/Land Record Officer, Power of Attorney issuing authority, Court, etc. and verify each and every document is correct as per record and still in field.
4) Reputation and character of Seller?
Before entering into agreement with a seller, it is necessary to check the reputation and character of Seller. Buyer should collect the information about seller, whether any criminal case is registered at any police station again him or he is habitual to lodge false and frivolous cases against common men just to get undue benefits. Such behavior of seller is highly condemnable and alarming for buyer to avoid such kind of notorious sellers.
5) Buying property on the basis of sale agreement?
Important to note here that sometimes, property dealers/investor entered into sale agreement with original owner by paying him 5%, 10% or 25% cash as earnest money and took time for 2/3 months for payment of remaining amount. Thereafter, they try to find new buyer to sell the property on higher amount on the basis of such sale agreement. Such sale agreement is alarming for buyer because property dealer/investor has no right to sell the property on the basis of such sale agreement. “Mushtary Hoshyar Bash”
6) 04 Types of property can never sale?
1. Property against Stay Order issued by court.
2. Property entered as surety in court.
3. Property attach by court due to any reason.
4. Property pledged/mortgage by any bank
7) Property visit and its measurement?
8) Payment to seller through bank, instead of cash or to any other person?
9) Taking Power of attorney/Mukhtarnama instead of Registry?
10) Proof of transfer of property as per law, documents required?
All above mistake are common to effect from layman. So watch the complete video to enrich yourself with knowledge.
Thanks for your patience.

Undertale Character Heights (Other Practical Applications)
Tumblr media
(Ko-Fi and Patreon of Post Author)
There are many practical applications for specific heights. While it’s plausible monsters would bring monster-sized furniture with them up to the Surface, integrating with a society adapted to human proportions has its problems. Humans will have to adjust the sizes of various objects or have a few extra-tall monster objects around just to accommodate monsters.
Misc.
The height of a tall refrigerator (at least in the U.S.) is 5 feet, 10 inches. So anyone 6 feet and taller would likely be able to tell that the top of a refrigerator is really dusty. According to the height calculations based on overworld sprites, the height difference between Sans and Papyrus is 1 foot, 7 inches. Even assuming Papyrus’s boots add an inch or two to his height, that’s a substantial difference.
Sans would either need to shortcut to the top of Papyrus’s sink (if the work depicts it like short-distance teleporting), use a stool, or even use a small chair. Assuming a small, human-made refrigerator (5 feet, 7 inches) in everything below the Large Dog calculation (which puts Sans’ height as 5 feet) Sans would feasibly have trouble reaching the top of a refrigerator, and might need a stool or chair. (or ask Papyrus to get it)
Assuming Papyrus doesn’t use a refrigerator as a spaghetti museum on the Surface, and Sans is on the lowest size estimates, Sans might store any food he wants cold on the lower shelves or compartments of the refrigerator, and Papyrus might take food from the upper shelves.
Homes
Beds
Asgore might be able to get a monster-made bed or order a (likely expensive) custom-made bed, but he can’t do anything about the bed sizes in motels. One could therefore write a short, humorous scene about this.
Some works suppose a teenage Asriel would grow very tall, much like Asgore. So, in a work where Asriel grows to be a teenager on the Surface, his parents might try to get him a monster-made bed...only to realize the shop that made their own beds years ago went out of business.
Speaking of Asriel and Asgore, some fans figure Asgore’s bed must have a special retractable headboard for his horns or a horn-holding pillow. Such adaptations might be handy for humans trying to keep elaborate hairdos from getting messed up as they sleep.
Assuming Frisk is 4 feet tall, the bed alone in the MTT Resort is 240 square feet...making it bigger than some one-room apartments. So, if MTT Resort expands to the surface with a new hotel similarly proportioned to the first, humans may be stunned at the enormous beds. Conversely, big monsters might complain about even the largest beds in hotels being undersized. Hotels in areas with high monster populations might have to fit a few rooms to have extra-big beds with horn holders/horn-pillows, but normal-sized humans might envy these rooms reserved for very large monsters/humans.
--
Doorways
If one wants to write a Toriel who’s spiteful to her ex, she could specifically get a house with doorways built extra-tall, but still too short for Asgore to comfortably fit in.
A public building made to accommodate monsters might technically be a barn, just so enormous monsters like Onionsan can fit. A human house developer might be baffled when a monster talks about building regulations that demand “horn space” for doorways.
--
Chairs
In brief: drafting chair black market.
Drafting chairs, which are extra-tall and often adjustable, would be roughly as comfortable for tall monsters as regular chairs. If there’s an undersupply of monster-made extra-tall chairs, taller monsters might use office-style adjustable chairs/drafting chairs as home furniture. If there aren’t enough drafting chairs in local stores, monsters might borrow/steal specialized office furniture. Monsters might shop at office supply stores and ask if there are pretty, “homey” versions of extra-big draft chairs. Employees of human office supply stores might panic because a whole lot of people want one particular model of draft chair, all at the same time. Someone might even buy up all the draft chairs and sell them to monsters at a surcharge.
On a more humorous note, Asgore might buy himself a nice draft chair and go through the learning curve of adjusting it to his proportions.
Travel
Airports
TSA scanners at the airport just wouldn’t fit extra-tall monsters. The nearest airport to Mt. Ebott might might have temporarily close its airport so it has time to fit the TSA scanners for extra-tall monsters. Or, airports must use other methods to check tall monsters for threats. (e.g., a TSA agent who’s a short lady needing to jump or use a stool to do a pat-down on Asgore) In fact, extra-tall monsters might sign up for pre-screening plans to avoid the embarrassment of trying to fit in a scanner.
Some works (e.g., Coffeelemental’s The Anomaly) suppose Asgore is involved in monster politics on the Surface. So a group supporting Asgore’s political campaigning could give him an airplane ticket to a monster rights summit...but he can’t fit on the airplane. Alternatively, the humans anticipate his discomfort and buy him a (very expensive) ticket on a luxury plane, but it’s still too small. He might research whether the plane can fit, find out it can’t, and reject the offer. Or, he might only learn about it at the airport and be very uncomfortable for the entire ride, having to hunch over immensely. Or, he could go onto the plane, reject it for being unable to even walk comfortably (for the bigger Asgore estimates) and anti-monster politicians spin that into him being ungrateful even to his allies.
Or: humans who are unusually wide and tall could use Asgore as a sort of mascot for a campaign to make airplane seats feasibly fit them.
--
Buses
The city near Mt. Ebott might have to import large Australian public buses, because it’s cheaper than retrofitting their own buses or manufacturing them on a small scale. To fit tall teenage monsters, schoolbuses are modified to have extra-tall roofs or just be converted Australian public buses. Or, school boards may consider it non-economical to retrofit all their school buses to fit a minority of extra-tall monster teens, so there’s only one converted Australian public bus. The (incidentally) all-monster composition of the one bus is fuel for anti-monster politicians.
--
Cars
Tumblr media
(Made by CatCouch of FurAffinity; commissioned by Shadd21 of FurAffinity.)
Someone could retrofit bigger models of cars to be even bigger, to fit tall monsters. A peripheral audience of humans also buy the retrofitted cars, because they love the space. Increased availability of extra-tall cars to fit a few hundred Toriel-sized (and above) monsters is a relief for wheelchair users, who also need big vans. Alternatively: a wheelchair-van converter has a lucrative career fitting vans for both extra-big monsters and monsters that can’t move well on land (e.g., Aaron). A car manufacturer, after catching footage of Asgore struggling to fit in a chair, might contact him for an advertising campaign for extra-roomy cars that could fit even him.
Toriel Being Spiteful
If one wants to write a Toriel that’s spiteful to her ex, she could get a small (medium-sized for humans) car and “helpfully” point out Asgore would struggle to fit inside, so she’d never feel obligated to, say, pick him up from the airport. If one want to really complicate this, one could make a teenage Flowey really tall, like a sunflower. Alternatively, teenage Asriel (assuming Flowey gets a Boss Monster body again) could clearly take after Asgore in height, and Toriel could scramble to find some way to comfortably fit Asriel while still making it too cramped for Asgore.
Or Toriel could get a van because it’s the most comfortable for her height and proportions, and now people keep asking her to help them move stuff with her van. (Notably, Deltarune Toriel specifically drives a van, though her height is yet to be calculated)

Throughout the mid and late 1990s, traders grew to become crazed over the Internet and the prospects for brand spanking new know-how growth. The shares of firms that were expecting to lose cash for years to return had been being bought at ridiculous prices. Countless folks moved cash from other investments into the technology sector in concern of missing a quick journey to riches. But as people began to think more rationally, many poorly run firms with unrealistic business plans began souring, and expertise shares plummeted. To additional make clear this level, Table 5.5 exhibits an instance of the calculations of these two ratios. Loan Maturity Date — Every mortgage will have a scheduled maturity date on which the final payment is due to absolutely repay the mortgage. However, an asset class can be damaged down extra granularly to incorporate particular person investment devices. For example, the definition of a fi xed earnings asset class can embody all forms of bonds amongst other investments. However, as discussed, there are numerous forms of bonds, and not all bonds carry out the identical under totally different economic and market conditions. For example, bonds issued by the U.S. authorities are perceived as being virtually threat free due to the stability and fi nancial strength of the United States.
What are the 3 rules of money?
Financial IQ is a measure of how well you do with money. Having a high financial IQ doesn't mean that your investments outperform the market or predict you'll retire a millionaire. Rather it means you handle money responsibly. You make smart money decisions and spend and save according to a plan.
It also explains that most financial service suppliers are business individuals themselves, and so they design and sell merchandise with a view to making a profit. Some service suppliers have been developed by groups of people to assist themselves and aren't profit oriented. The goal of the second booklet is to help folks to take inventory of their current livelihood strategies and decide in the event that they contemplate any of their enterprises as companies from which they hope to make a financial revenue.
Entrepreneurs need to ensure that they aren't giving up too much control and too much of an possession position in return for capital.
Variable Life Insurance Insurance salespeople make a considerably greater commission from selling variable life insurance when compared to time period life insurance coverage, which is commonly why they attempt to convince you that this is the better selection.
In addition, the actions of the enterprise shall be closely watched by any taking part traders.
One or extra seats on a company’s board of directors may be taken by angel traders or members of a enterprise capitalist fi rm, and ongoing reporting is often required and monitored.

Bank checking and financial savings accounts invested with a Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC) insured financial institution are insured for up to $250,000 (the current threshold in 2009) by the federal authorities. In this case, the portfolio’s threat has elevated because of extra publicity to stocks and fewer exposure to bonds. ACTIVE AND PASSIVE INVESTING Two primary investment methods embody energetic and passive management approaches. An energetic investment technique is employed when an investor or fund supervisor uses forecasting tools, assumptions, and analysis to determine which securities to buy and sell and when. Active investing is intended to beat the market, meaning that by choosing individual securities, an investor can earn larger returns than a basic benchmark or market index. This course provides students with the fundamental construction of these organizations as well as the principles and tips that govern pre-employment education necessities. The automobiles, gear, and emergency mitigations strategies that are commonly used in the emergency- and fireplace-management subject are additionally explored. Approximately 18 months after the pilot, we invited participants to complete a follow-up examine. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot’s financial education interventions in encouraging non-budgeters to undertake sustained budgeting behaviours. We found that the pilot financial education interventions had overwhelmingly constructive lengthy-term results in bettering non-budgeters’ budgeting behaviours and confidence. Over half (54%) of those that started budgeting through the pilot were nonetheless doing so one and a half years later. Even extra promising was the finding that participants who have been budgeting had better financial outcomes than those who were not.
What are the 10 principles of financial management?
Financial intelligence (FININT) is the gathering of information about the financial affairs of entities of interest, to understand their nature and capabilities, and predict their intentions. Generally the term applies in the context of law enforcement and related activities.
For individuals with restricted spending needs, seeking the bottom annual payment is commonly the best strategy. Table 5.2 illustrates a simplistic example of how an annual payment can result in larger financing prices even when accompanied by a lower APR. According to a report by WIFR.com, the typical time earlier than someone realizes that their identity has been stolen is 12 to 18 months. And whatever you do, prevent solicitors/conveyancers who bill a hourly rate, and watch out for any type of quote that does not completely itemise all fees You can prevent falling foul of these irritations by asking the ideal inquiries prior to you instruct, and choosing your conveyancer meticulously.
Getting or selling a house is possibly the biggest 'deal' in your life. A key component of this is selecting a vetted solicitor that you can count on.
Tumblr media
1. Look for individual (as well as recent) referrals
Great old fashioned word of mouth is among the most reliable techniques of ensuring you get an excellent service-- in any type of sort of trade. Ask friends and also associates who have actually just recently gotten or offered residential or commercial property if they enjoyed with their solicitor or (qualified conveyancer) as well as whether they would advise their solutions. The evidence, after all, remains in the dessert.
2. Ask the agent offering the residence
The agent in charge of marketing the residence may also have the ability to suggest a good solicitor-- nevertheless, they manage them daily and recognise which ones are much more aggressive as well as which are much less so.
3. Think about a regional conveyancing specialist firm
As much of the conveyancing process is now executed online (or by means of the traditional article) it's not crucial that the firm you select is local to your present home. Nevertheless, if time pressure is on later on down the line, it can be comforting to recognise you can deliver records or picture ID for instance, by hand.
4. Audio them out
While you may not completely understand the ins and outs of what a solicitor does, remember you are a paying customer and it's your right to scope out what you can anticipate in terms of get in touch with, speed and estimated expense.
Constantly telephone the solicitors prior to making an instruction as well as ask to talk to whoever will be dealing with the case. This is also a chance to develop a connection which might verify useful later on down the line.
5. Think of the dimension of the firm
Especially if it's throughout the summer or Xmas holiday, you might wish to take into consideration using a larger firm of solicitors. By doing this, there'll be most likely to be others that can action in as well as cover if your solicitor is off-- as well as maintain that critical momentum going.
6. Don't plump for the most affordable
It's a great suggestion to obtain an approximated repaired expense upfront from your solicitor, do not be lured to simply head directly for the most affordable. The stating, "if you pay peanuts you obtain monkeys," is one that occurs. My advice is to choose high quality.
Both solicitors (who are managed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority) as well as Licensed Conveyancers (who are managed by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers) are completely managed as well as insured. See our overview on conveyancing costs to offer you an idea of what conveyancers as well as lawyers consist of in their fees and also just how much you should anticipate to pay.
Home owners Alliance makes it very easy for you to find the conveyancers and also lawyers that our members have actually had the best experience with, by showing you a ranking following to some of the quotes. If the solicitor or conveyancer is not thorough and efficient in sending off the ideal little bits of paper at the right time, they can create substantial hold-ups to the procedure. - Some conveyancers and also solicitors can be hard to get hold of, making it hard to track exactly how your situation is going, or to get any kind of inquiries answered.

A Tale of Two Jeffreys: How the Virgin Islands Welcomed a Rich Sex Offender—and Punished a Poor One

A Tale of Two Jeffreys: How the Virgin Islands Welcomed a Rich Sex Offender—and Punished a Poor One
By Michael Daly, Special Correspondent | Published 07.28.19, 6:01AM ET | Daily Beast | Posted July 28, 2019 |
From the Virgin Islands comes a tale of two Jeffreys, and the difference great wealth can make when it comes to sex crimes—until it doesn't.
Both Jeffreys were convicted of shameful crimes that required them to register as sex offenders in whatever state or jurisdiction they resided.
Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to engaging a minor in prostitution in a 2007 plea deal only a super-rich guy could have swung. He did 18 months locked up, mostly in a private wing of the Palm Beach County jail, where he only stayed at night, returning each morning to “work release.”
He then proceeded to prove that a registered sex offender with enough money in the Virgin Islands can just continue to come and go from a private island off the coast of St. Thomas, with an ever-changing entourage of girls who appeared to be barely in their teens. He would announce his periodic return by raising the American flag over the opulent hideaway identified on the maps as Little Saint James Island, but known to locals as “pedophile island.”
Jeffrey No. 2—Jeffery Cole—was convicted in Ohio of a misdemeanor charge of voyeurism in 2009. He was a schlub of modest means, but his offense was relatively minor (if creepy) and he needed neither wealth nor influence to receive just a suspended sentence of 90 days and two years probation.
“The underlying conviction, which requires Mr. Cole to register as a sex offender, did not involve a minor, physical violence, or physical touching of any kind,” his present attorney, Melanie Turnbull, noted in court.
We Found Red Flags All Over Jeffrey Epstein’s Jail Records
Once he successfully completed probation, Cole moved to Georgia, where he registered as a sex offender. He moved to the Virgin Islands in 2018 and has not been charged with engaging in further voyeurism or any other crimes.
The problem for this Jeffrey was that he failed to register promptly in his new home as a sex offender. The U.S. Attorney for the Virgin Islands, Gretchen Shappert, did not miss an opportunity to convey through the media how seriously her office takes such matters.
“USVI resident indicted for not registering as sex offender,” the headline in a local news outlet read.
That February 28th article was accompanied by a photo illustration that showed a parked auto with a driver-side front door emblazoned with the words “SEX OFFENDER In This Car.” It also pictured a house with a sign out front reading, ”SEX OFFENDER LIVES HERE.”
On April 12, Cole entered into a  plea deal where he faces a sentence of no more than a year.
“St. Thomas Resident Pleaded Guilty to Failing to Register as a Sex Offender,” the U.S. Attorney’s press release announced.
In the meantime, on March 15, the other Jeffrey flew into St. Thomas aboard his private jet. He made his annual check-in at the local sex registry office, a gesture that can now be seen as a kind of mockery, as it’s been revealed that he had been seen still bringing young girls to his private island.
“Everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s pedophile island,’” remembers a Wall Street numbers cruncher turned pizzeria owner who arrived in the Virgin Islands from New York in 2009.
Where were the authorities when it came to this Jeffrey?
Epstein’s Coney Island Days: From Math Nerd to ‘Arrogant’ Prick
At least four members of the local legislature accepted significant campaign contributions from Southern Trust Company, Inc., one of a host of business entities Epstein founded in the Virgin Islands. Those companies began with L.S.J, LLC, through which he bought his private island for $7.95 million in 1998.
Epstein had hired Cecile de Jongh, wife of former Virgin Islands Gov. John de Jongh, as the office manager for Southern Trust, which was granted income tax breaks of up to 90 percent by the U.S. Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority. The former first lady also managed the Epstein VI Foundation, which supported everything from brain research at Harvard to the girls’ volleyball team at St. Croix Central High School in the Virgin Islands.
After Epstein was arrested in Florida for a sex crime involving a minor, a Virgin Islands newspaper called The Avis ran an article suggesting that Cecile de Jongh’s connections with Epstein might muddy her husband’s political prospects. The Avis also noted that the arrest called into question whether the girls’ volleyball team should have jerseys bearing the name Epstein.
A purported grassroots movement collected 5,000 signatures on a petition accusing The Avis of yellow journalism. Epstein attorney Gerald Lefcourt issued a statement saying, “The grand jury and the prosecutor's office... determined that no serious offense had occurred.”
Really.
Epstein kept partying on Pedophile Island. He is said to have met some resistance when he sought to buy the nearby, larger island of Great St James. The blue-blood Danish family that owned it is said to have been reluctant to sell to someone with Epstein’s unsavory reputation. But he appears to have managed to acquire it anyway in 2016 by cloaking the buyer’s identity with a company called Great St. Jim LLC. He is said to have paid $18 million.
Epstein immediately applied for a permit to erect two 80-foot flag poles, arguing that the 45-foot limit on the books should not apply to his property. No doubt at least one of the poles would be used to fly an American flag and announce for everyone to see when the owner of Pedophile Island was back.
But construction of a compound on the bigger island was delayed by environmental concerns that even somebody as well-connected as Epstein could not just circumvent.
And there was far greater trouble brewing for Epstein as the result of a determined reporter, Julie Brown of the Miami Herald.
Brown revealed and documented the unconscionable plea deal Epstein had been granted. The Manhattan U.S. Attorney launched a new investigation.
In reviewing the 2007 Florida case, the FBI noted a court document reporting an incident that when agents served Epstein’s personal assistant Lesley Groff with a grand jury subpoena, she excused herself, purportedly to check on her child. She is said by the court document to have used the moment to telephone Epstein, who was headed in his private plane from Palm Beach to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey across the Hudson River from New York. He was in the company of another assistant, Nadia Marcinkova, who has been accused of complicity in his sex trafficking.
“Mr. Epstein became concerned that the FBI would try to serve his traveling companion, Nadia Marcinkova, with a similar grand jury subpoena,” the document reports. “In fact, the agents were preparing to serve Ms. Marcinkova with a target letter when the flight landed in Teterboro. Mr. Epstein then redirected his airplane, making the pilot file a new flight plan to travel to the US Virgin Islands instead.”
The American flag no doubt again went up over Pedophile Island as the FBI stood thwarted at Teterboro.
A dozen years later, the FBI took great care that Epstein received no warning. He flew unsuspecting on July 6 from Paris to Teterboro and a waiting pair of handcuffs.
On July 8, Epstein was arraigned in Manhattan federal court on charges of trafficking in underage girls. He was remanded as a flight risk and a danger to the community. He was consigned to the Metropolitan Correctional Center, briefly in general population but within hours assigned to the Special Housing Unit due to threats from inmates who apparently take a dim view of “short eyes,” as child molesters are known behind bars.
Epstein must have considered the arrest a possibility, for some time ago he commissioned an artist to paint a mural in his Manhattan mansion of him in a prison yard. Neither he nor the artist seem to have foreseen that he would find himself locked up 23 hours a day in an eight-by-eight foot cell infested with cockroaches and rodents. A thickly screened single narrow window faces a brick wall and lets in only enough light to tell night from day. Mold is said to grow on the walls. Water seeps in under the door from a shower to which he has access only once every three days.
For two weeks, Epstein’s cellmate was an ex-cop named Nicholas Tartaglione, who is accused of a quadruple murder. Tartaglione says the two became “friends,” whereby he joined a list that once included two presidents, Donald Trump and Bill Clinton. A realtor who asked not to be identified recently told The Daily Beast that Trump exclaimed at a business gathering at Tavern on the Green some years ago that Epstein was “my best friend.”
Tartaglione has reportedly told authorities that he saved Epstein from a suicide attempt. But Trump may not be the only liar on Epstein's list of pals. Tartaglione ended up in the Special Housing Unit after he was caught with a cellphone that he insisted had just been given to him by another inmate. Tartaglione then moved to keep the government from inspecting the phone’s contents on the grounds it may have privileged communications with his lawyer and with his wife. Never mind it was supposedly not his.
Epstein is now said to be on suicide watch. He is 66 and, if convicted, he stands a good chance of dying in prison even if he takes the best possible care of himself. He may have finally landed in a situation where all his money cannot save him from suffering the consequences of his actions.
Also behind bars is the other Jeffrey, having been remanded when he entered his guilty plea in April.
Cole had been free on his own recognizance since his arraignment, the court having deemed him to be neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community. His attorney petitioned for him to remain at liberty pending sentencing, which is set for August 15.
The attorney noted that Cole is a 57-year-old graduate of Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in landscape architecture, had been steadily employed for more than 30 years and was presently a fleet manager at a car rental company. He would be able to continue working there until his day of reckoning.
The judge remanded Cole nonetheless. Cole was shipped off to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. His attorney has since filed a motion to expedite matters.
“The current sentencing date inevitably results in a period of incarceration of four months,” the petition noted, adding that Cole was eligible to receive probation and no time at all.
As of Saturday, the sentencing was still set for August 15. Cole remains behind bars in Guaynabo. But he will almost certainly be free within the next few months.
And you can bet that this Jeffrey would not trade places with the other one for all the money in the world

California braces for another heat wave (Yahoo News) The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning Tuesday for much of California that will last from Wednesday through next Monday, the third potentially record-breaking heat wave over the last two months in a state racked by a drought made worse by climate change. Temperatures are forecast to reach 116 degrees in the valleys of San Diego over the weekend, and even higher in desert portions of the state. In the Central Valley, where much of the nation’s food is grown, temperatures are forecast to reach 111 degrees on Sunday, and Yosemite National Park could see temperatures of over 108 degrees for several days in a row, the National Weather Service warned.
Haitian President assassinated (BBC/AP) Haitian President Jovonel Moïse, 53, was killed in his private residence at 1 a.m. local time by armed assailants, amid political instability in the impoverished Caribbean nation. First Lady Martine Moïse was injured in the gunfire. Moïse had been ruling by decree for more than two years after the country failed to hold elections and parliament was dissolved. Prime Minister Claude Joseph assumed leadership of Haiti with help of police and the military and decreed a two-week state of siege following Moïse’s killing, which stunned a nation grappling with some of the Western Hemisphere’s highest poverty, violence and political instability. Inflation and gang violence are spiraling upward as food and fuel becomes scarcer, while 60% of Haitian workers earn less than $2 a day. The increasingly dire situation comes as Haiti is still trying to recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 following a history of dictatorship and political upheaval.
Dutch journalist shot who exposed the mob (Washington Post) It was evening in Amsterdam when Peter R. de Vries stepped out of the television studio and into the downtown streets. Decades investigating cold-case killings had earned the silver-haired 64-year-old accolades and a reputation as one of the most famous journalists in the Netherlands. His career in crime reporting had also earned him death threats, but friends said he laughed off the danger. Shortly after leaving the TV studio on Tuesday, de Vries was shot. “He was seriously wounded and is fighting for his life,” Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema told reporters. “He is a national hero to us all. A rare, courageous journalist who tirelessly sought justice.” The Netherlands has one of the lowest violent crime rates in Europe. But its long shoreline, numerous ports and excellent infrastructure has made it a major hub for drug trafficking, and de Vries had been working against them.
Russia’s pandemic response (Foreign Policy) Russia is firmly in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic’s third wave. Every day, there are about 22,000 reported new infections—twice as many as during the peak of the first wave in May 2020—and more than 600 deaths. The new delta variant of the virus, which Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said is responsible for 90 percent of new infections in the Russian capital, has caught Russia almost completely unawares. Now, the campaign for parliamentary elections in September could make fighting the pandemic even harder, since the ruling United Russia party may be even more reluctant to impose unpopular measures like lockdowns.
Taliban Try to Polish Their Image as They Push for Victory (NYT) In June, when the Taliban took the district of Imam Sahib in Afghanistan’s north, the insurgent commander who now ruled the area had a message for his new constituents, including some government employees: Keep working, open your shops and keep the city clean. The water was turned back on, the power grid was repaired, garbage trucks collected trash and a government vehicle’s flat tire was mended—all under the Taliban’s direction. Imam Sahib is one of dozens of districts caught up in a Taliban military offensive that has swiftly captured more than a quarter of Afghanistan’s districts, many in the north, since the U.S. withdrawal began in May. It is all part of the Taliban’s broader strategy of trying to rebrand themselves as capable governors while they press a ruthless, land-grabbing offensive across the country. But the signs that the Taliban have not reformed are increasingly clear: An assassination campaign against government workers, civil society leaders and security forces continues on pace. And in areas the insurgents have seized, women are being forced out of public-facing roles, and girls out of schools.
Iran nuclear worries (Foreign Policy) Iran has begun the process of making enriched uranium metal, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported on Tuesday, a move which the United States called “an unfortunate step backwards” while France, Germany, and the United Kingdom said the process fulfilled “no credible civilian need.” Development of uranium metal was banned under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal due to its use in the core of a nuclear weapon. Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s representative at indirect U.S.-Iran negotiations in Vienna noted Iran’s breach of the deal on Twitter while offering a reminder that Biden’s failure to lift Trump-era sanctions on Iran also constitutes a breach. Ulyanov said another round of Vienna talks and a full restoration of the deal was the “only way out of this vicious circle.”
Vietnam’s biggest city sees panic-buying over virus lockdown fears (Reuters) Anticipation of stricter movement curbs triggered panic-buying in Vietnam’s economic hub Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday, the epicentre of its coronavirus outbreak, while media reported unrest at a city jail where dozens of inmates were infected. The health ministry said outbound travellers from the city of 9 million people would be subjected to a week of quarantine and testing at their destinations, a day after dozens of flights were suspended to control the spread. Shelves at the supermarkets were being emptied since late Tuesday, witnesses said, in preparation for tighter measures, as the country reported more than 1,000 daily coronavirus cases for the first time.
Australia’s largest city Sydney locks down for third week (AP) Sydney’s two-week lockdown has been extended for another week due to the vulnerability of an Australia population largely unvaccinated against COVID-19, officials said on Wednesday. The decision to extend the lockdown through July 16 was made on health advice, state Premier Gladys Berejiklian said. The extension of the lockdown, which covers Australia’s largest city and some nearby communities, means most children will not return to school next week following their midyear break.
Ever Given: Ship that blocked Suez Canal sets sail after deal signed (BBC) A huge container ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March—disrupting global trade—is finally leaving the waterway after Egypt signed a compensation deal with its owners and insurers. Witnesses say the Ever Given weighed anchor shortly after 11:30 local time (09:30 GMT) and headed north towards the Mediterranean escorted by tugs. The ship has been impounded for three months near the canal city of Ismailia. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Egypt had demanded $550m (£397m). The vessel, with an Indian crew, is still loaded with about 18,300 containers. It is due to undergo safety checks at Port Said before sailing to Rotterdam in the Netherlands and then to the UK port of Felixstowe where it will offload its containers, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Khalid bin Salman Gets Quiet Washington Welcome (Foreign Policy) Prince Khalid bin Salman, the son of Saudi King Salman and brother of Crown Prince Mohammed, meets with State Department officials today on a trip to Washington that the White House would rather not talk about. Prince Khalid’s visit was not publicly announced by either U.S. or Saudi officials, and is the highest profile visit by a Saudi official since the Biden administration declassified an intelligence assessment surrounding the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi by a Saudi hit squad in Istanbul in 2018. On Tuesday he met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. As Saudi Arabia’s deputy defense minister, there is nothing unusual about a representative of a U.S. regional partner meeting with U.S. officials. However, the lack of fanfare underlines the Biden administration’s wariness in dealing with a government that then-candidate Joe Biden promised to treat as a “pariah” for human rights abuses, chief among them the killing of Khashoggi, a U.S. resident and critic of the Saudi government. Biden initially held true to his promise that “America will never again check its principles at the door just to buy oil or sell weapons,” when he announced a pause in proposed weapons sales to the kingdom; the decision will likely be watered down to a suspension in the sale of air-to-ground offensive weaponry.
South Africa’s ex-leader turns himself in for prison term (AP) Former South African president Jacob Zuma turned himself over to police early Thursday to begin serving a 15-month prison term. Just minutes before the midnight deadline for police to arrest him, Zuma left his Nkandla home in a convoy of vehicles. Zuma handed himself over to authorities to obey the country’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, that he should serve a prison term for contempt. Zuma, 79, was ordered to prison for contempt because he defied a court order for him to testify before a judicial commission investigating widespread allegations of corruption during his time as the country’s president, from 2009 to 2018.

Scam attempts to obtain taxpayers' personal info remain part of IRS' Dirty Dozen
The COVID-19 pandemic presented new opportunities for crooks, as noted in yesterday's post on the first group of 2021's Dirty Dozen Tax Scams.
Today, however, we're back with the golden oldies, as in trying to steal your gold. And your identity.
These Personal Information Cons use a variety of techniques that have been around for years. There's phishing, its cousin voice phishing or vishing, Internal Revenue Service impersonators, social media trolling and tricks, and ransomware.
Regardless of which illegal method is used, the goal is the same. Criminals try to get as much of your personal information as possible, including but not limited to Social Security numbers, bank account or credit card information, and passwords. They then take that data and steal not only any tax-related payments you're due, but your whole persona.
These scams use tax hooks promising faster or larger refunds, as well as schemes threaten penalties or worse from what the crooks say are unpaid taxes.
Here's a closer look at these personal information tax scams and how to avoid falling for them.
Phishing at all the possible personal info pools: The Internal Revenue Service continues to see surges of fake emails, text messages, websites, and social media attempts to steal personal information. Although these attacks tend to increase during tax season, the IRS says they remain a major cause of identity theft throughout the year.
Phishing scams tend to be mainly via email, but also are used in text messages and social media posts where crooks post as family or friends to engage their victims.
More often, though, phishing attempts try to convince targets that the message is from an official source, even the IRS. After years of practice, the schemes can be tricky and cleverly disguised to look legitimate.
So be careful. Watch out for emails and other scams posing as the IRS. Be particularly skeptical of unsolicited messages promising a big tax refund, missing stimulus payment, or even issuing a threat. And never open attachments or click on links in those emails or text messages.
Phishers also look to catch tax pros: Phishing scams are productive. That's why they're still around. But it takes time to go from one taxpayer target to another.
So crooks looking for a better return on their illegal efforts target tax professionals. If they can get into tax preparers' databases, they'll get a wealth of information on all their clients.
The IRS and its Security Summit partners in the states and tax industry have renewed their warning to tax professionals about phishing scams involving verification of Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFIN) and Centralized Authorization File (CAF) numbers. The agency has seen an increase in these kinds of scams, along with offers to buy and sell EFINs and CAFs.
Tax professionals have reported receiving scam e-mails from the fictitious "IRS Tax E-Filing" group. Don't open any of these e-mails' attachments; don't click any links. Rather, report the scam to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).
Fake "new client" phishing bait: Most tax and accounting offices look to expand their services. Crooks try to take advantage of this basic business goal by posing as potential tax clients.
The IRS offers the following email new client scam example: "I just moved here from Michigan. I have an urgent tax issue and I was hoping you could help. I hope you are taking on new clients."
The email from the fake potential client also includes two attachments. One is said to be an IRS notice. The other is the fake prospective client's prior-year tax return that's being questions by the IRS.
In another fake new client scam, an image of which is shown below, the masquerading phishers says he/she/they were recommended by their former tax preparer who is retiring.
As these two examples show, the new client scam is easy to tweak. So be on the lookout for variations and be wary of emails from unknown senders.
IRS impersonator phone calls and vishing: In additional to email outreach, crooks still use phones to try to gather personal financial information. One of the most prevalent forms of voice-related phishing, known as vishing, was the call from an IRS employee impersonator.
The good news from the IRS and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is that both agencies report a decline in these fake tax agent calls. The IRS has seen a 43 percent decrease in the number of reports of calls from callers claiming to be from the IRS, down to 20,500 in 2020 compared to 36,000 in 2019. The FTC saw a 67 percent decline from 7,694 reports in 2019 to 2,571 in 2020.
But the IRS says it now is seeing an increase in tax lien themed vishing scams. A quarter of these telephone phishing scams in 2020 were by crooks using fake tax lien information.
Remember, the IRS generally first contacts people by mail, not by phone, about unpaid taxes. When the IRS occasionally does call taxpayers, it will not demand immediate tax payment using an iTunes card, gift card, prepaid debit card, money order, or wire transfer.
If you receive any tax related call out of the blue, security experts recommend asking questions of the caller, but being careful not providing any personal information. If in doubt, hang up immediately. Then report the call to, you got it, TIGTA.
Social media's open scams book: The popularity of social media outlets has made them prime avenues to obtain information that can be used in identity theft. The easiest option for unscrupulous individuals is to lurk on accounts and discover personal information their victims reveal that can be used against them.
Sometimes, though, the cons get proactive, sending emails impersonating victims' family, friends, or co-workers to wheedle out a bit more data. So beware of that text message from Cousin Jane, whom you haven't talked to in ages, suddenly wanting to update her calendar with your birthday, including the year.
More often, though, phishing attempts try to convince targets that the message is from an official source, even the IRS. After years of practice, the schemes can be tricky and cleverly disguised to look legitimate.
The personal information you post also can be used by scammers who share, for example, a link to say your favorite charity you lauded on Facebook. But it's not the charity. It's a fake website or malware that gathers more data to steal your identity, tax and otherwise.
To prevent personal information you share on social media platforms from being collected and used against you, review your accounts' privacy settings and limit data that is publicly shared.
You also might want to also simply rethink how much you share online.
Ransomware on the rise: Already this year, multiple ransomware attacks have disrupted companies and consumer supply chains. With ransomware, the legitimate owners of data or programs are blocked by hackers who won't release access to it until they are paid.
These data hostage situations tend to be a problem for larger companies and industries, but the tactic is spreading. The U.S. Treasury Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FINCEN) has noted that ransomware attacks continue to rise across various sectors, particularly across governmental entities as well as financial, educational and healthcare institutions.
Any company, including relatively small tax and accounting firms should take cyber security precautions. As evidenced by scammers' attempts to get into tax professionals' databases via phishing schemes, ransomware is another route to sensitive tax data.
Official earnings statements (like W-2, 1099 and other tax-related forms) and year-end statements (from our checking, savings, retirement and investments accounts) all contain our names, addresses, account numbers and, of course, our Social Security numbers.
Uncle Sam already requires, under the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 and administered by the Federal Trade Commission, that tax professionals have a written security plan in place to safeguard all their clients' tax data. Ways to prevent and/or deal with ransomware attacks should be part of that plan.
Two down, three to come: As noted at the beginning of this post, this is part 2 of this year's special rollout of its annual Dirty Dozen Tax Scams. Instead of delivering them all at once in list form, the IRS is doing so based on four categories of scams.
The scam quartet is listed below, with the published categories linked to the posts here on the ol' blog discussing them:
Pandemic related scams, with a focus on attempts steal COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) and other tax-related coronavirus relief distributed by the IRS, on Monday, June 28;
Personal information cons, such as phishing, its cousin voice phishing or vishing, and ransomware, on Tuesday, June 29;
Ruses that focus on unsuspecting victims, including fake charities and fraudulent schemes targeting senior citizens or immigrants, on Wednesday, June 30; and
Questionable schemes that promote abusive structures, such as syndicated conservation easements, on Thursday, July 1.
After the IRS completes its list, I'll wrap up things here with a consolidated look on Friday, July 2, of the 2021 Dirty Dozen Tax Scams and a review of ways to avoid falling for any and all of them.
