#challengers will be the real test for zendaya

I recently read an article in which Quentin Tarantino stated that fewer movie stars exist as a result of "Marvel movies in Hollywood." I think Jennifer Aniston made a similar argument before saying that there are no longer any movie stars. I'm not sure what that means. I can think of a lot of movie stars right now, such as Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, and Zoey Deutch etc. what do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and Quentin's comments.

Months ago, when you sent me this ask, anon, I wrote out a really long reply and as soon as I hit post, my laptop crashed and ate the answer, and I was so annoyed at myself for not saving my reply, that I couldn't bring myself to try and re-write an answer. I'm really sorry for that, especially because I think this is such an interesting ask (or well, two asks, because I think the death of the movie star and the impact Marvel's had on the broader concept of a movie star, are kinda two different things).
I've been thinking about it a bit again recently though, particularly as the Oscar race gears up, and Jacob Elordi and Charles Melton''s respective stars are rising in an industry currently desperate to find the new young Hollywood male 'talent', and I've been thinking about it again because honestly?
I agree with Jennifer Aniston, I think the movie star is dead.
We are a long, long way from Golden Age Hollywood where actors like Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe could captivate a public imagination in a way that translated to big box office effect, after all. Hell, we're even out of New Hollywood, an era dominated by names like Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and Jane Fonda, and the Blockbuster era with Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone and Harrison Ford.
My original reply went into a lot of the different reasoning as to why this is (like with many things, I don't think there's any one reason for it), in particular how the advent of streaming has changed our relationship with films and TV shows, how the saturation of the market has diluted the staying power of celebrities, how social media and the perceived accessibility of celebrities removes personal mystique which in turn removes intrigue and increases a sense of entitlement, and the fact that so many people having stopped going to the cinema means that the experiential element of seeing a film in a setting larger than life has been diminished.
I think call out culture plays a role too, with any actor on the rise being torn down by tweets they made eight, nine or ten years ago impacting how their star rises, I think the dismantling of the studio system (which is a good thing!) also harmed actors in the long run as studios stopped investing the same resources into making and training stars (they used to be able to sing, dance and act! Now some can barely even act!), and I think, of course, the rise of prestige TV changed the industry substantially (after all, movie stars were movie stars - they traditionally did not, and would not, do TV, which created a clear class structure in terms of screen-based storytelling).
And yeah, I think the language shift from film and TV to content has done irrepairable damage to the artistry of filmmaking and the consideration of a movie star as an actor at the top of their field instead of an actor with the most Insta followers or YouTube subscribers (after all, if everything's content, isn't it the same thing? [no lol]).
Which I guess is kind of where Quentin Tarantino's argument comes in, right? What he's saying is that Marvel's made it so that the IP - the content itself - is the star, not the actor, and I'd say he's probably right with that.
Think of it this way - back in the New Hollywood/Blockbuster era, Harrison Ford was the movie star - he was leading new franchises left-right-and-centre between Star Wars and Indiana Jones, sci fi epics like Blade Runner, leading action thrillers like Patriot Games, The Fugitive and Clear and Present Danger and getting nominated for Oscars for Witness.
He was a movie star in every sense of the word because you could hinge a film - one with a new concept, not just remakes or sequels - on him and be virtually guaranteed a success. He was what sold the tickets, the director just hopefully had to make something good enough people would leave the cinema glad they saw.
Tarantino's argument is the Marvel model - - hell, even the new Star Wars properties, turned the franchise into the star, for better or worse, which means original films can't compete because nobody knows the IP. Back when Harrison Ford was at the top of his game, his name was what helped original films including smaller, standalone works like Witness find an audience, but the studios have changed that. Capitalism has changed that.
Properties with existing audiences and deep pockets for merch were prioritised, only now those franchises are faltering and you've got a generation trained that 'cinematic events' are reserved for blockbusters in established universes, instead of taking a risk on a new film because you know you love an actor who's in it.
Do I think we could go back?
Maybe, but probably not.
I think the place we are now in the history of cinema / TV / 'content' means you can't make a movie star anymore because I think the industry is simply so different that no actor can break through in the same way that even Leonardo DiCaprio could 30 years ago. That industry doesn't exist anymore, actors aren't guaranteed draws (Bones and All proved that for Timothee Chalamet, and Wonka I think could go a similar way), or they have to heavily rely on other industries to become household names which I think dilutes them as a pure 'movie star' (Zendaya's a great example of this - I like her a lot, but how many movies has she even been in? They built her career up in peripheral industries long before they tried to sell her as a movie star, and frankly, I'd question her even as a leading actress yet given she's typically only either been in ensemble casts or clear supporting).
It's a whole new world, and yeah, I think the movie star is dead.

I don’t even know what’s wrong with being a Hollywood it girl really. They get a brief burst of superstardom that basically financially sets them up for life (so long as they’re smart with their money), then relative obscurity/a moderate amount of lifelong fame. The only real downside is the weird misogynistic stigma that they were poised to be the next actress to reset the industry or whatever and ‘settled’ for being an ‘it girl’. And unless Zendaya is struggling to maintain a stable income there really isn’t any reason for her to really strive for groundbreaking acting roles or anything. Unless she specifically wants to be the next big Oscar winning actress for clout or legacy or something. In that case I do kind of feel sorry for her because she’s at the age where she should be ramping up to the golden era of her career, but she’s just not getting any notable roles.
I’d say the misogynistic stigma is a HUGE downside and speaks to the way Hollywood eats up and spits out young women who are “past their prime” and by prime, they mean anyone who looks older than 25.
I won’t speak for Zendaya but I… don’t really vibe with this idea that people do a job like hers for the income. Acting is an art and a craft, one that from what I understand she’s been doing her entire life. If all she wanted was stable income, she could’ve stuck with Disney or gone the route of other lesser Disney actors. She very clearly wants to make her mark as an artist, which I really push back has anything to do with “clout” or “legacy” and more “respect in her chosen field”
She’s a media darling that has far more hype than credits to her name. She needs a solid win, since we all know how brutal the industry can be— especially to Black women.
Challengers will be a litmus test for her, one that at least in my pov I hope she actually gets a decent chance with.

Summary: You’re a new, inexperienced actress plucked from the obscurity of everyday life to play the lead in the reboot of a famous British Jane Austen novel, and Tom Holland just so happens to be playing your love interest.
A/N: This is a little shorter but I wanted to get into Tom’s head a little and have you guys understand him a bit :) I’m a little down so if you could just tell my if you liked this or legit even hated it I’d love the feedback! “Haz, I would come to the pub quiz, but we just went on a double date and I don’t really want to spend anymore time with him. It bothers Adrian.” You were on the phone with Harrison the Saturday after the date, which had ended as awkwardly as it began. After Tom and Adrian came back from the bathroom, you could tell they had fought over something. Tom wouldn’t look at you the rest of the time, and he barely said two words. Adrian kept a possessive hand on your thigh, which only made you uneasy. Zendaya, though she gave it her best effort, couldn’t salvage the night.
You were so relieved when it was over.
“Ah yes, the dinner date from hell. How was it? Tom wouldn’t say much about it.” Harrison laughed, shooing Monty away from his feet. You were in LA and he was in London, but he’d been trying to get you to visit for weeks now. You knew you couldn’t keep putting it off.
“It was terrible, the whole thing was so awkward. Poor Z tried to make it work, but Tom wasn’t having it. He and Adrian were in the bathroom together for a while so I know something went down, but Adrian won’t tell me anything. Of course, it’s obvious he has a problem with Tom and I just can’t handle the stress.” You whined, collapsing on your couch and avoiding Bailey’s piles of paper everywhere. She’d been in the process of a massive reorganization and your house looked like a bomb had gone off.
“See, this is why you need to get away. Just come over for the weekend, let Adrian sort himself out. It’ll be fun, I promise. And Charlotte misses you, she says you’re more fun than Tom and I.” Harrison pleaded, his voice dropping a bit when Tom came into the room. He raised an eyebrow at Harrison and mouthed Who’s that?.
“You know, I’m going to regret this. But fine, I’ll come this weekend. I need a vacation, even if staying with you is more like being your maid.” You sighed, getting up to go pack. Tom sat next to Harrison and pretended like he was on his phone, but he was really trying to listen in on the conversation. The voice on the other end sounded familiar, but he couldn’t place it.
“Great, everyone will be so happy! Monty is excited, I can already tell. Fly out tonight and I’ll come pick you up at the airport. And don’t worry, I’ll leave you-know-who behind.” whispered, shoving Tom away who was trying to listen in. You chuckled and found your suitcase behind your closet, taking it out and checking to make sure it was big enough.
“Thanks Haz, I’ll see you soon.” You hung up and started folding clothes to take, texting Bailey to let her know you’d be leaving and to tell Adrian. It had been weird between you two after the date, and you knew it should have been you telling him but you didn’t want to deal with the fallout. Bailey would be able to talk him down.
“Who was that?” Tom asked, trying to be nonchalant about it. Harrison rolled his eyes, knowing that he was secretly curious, but he wasn’t sure if he was supposed to tell him about you. Tom would definitely not be calm about it.
But then again, you were going to be here in a couple of hours.
“Um, it was Y/N. She’s coming here for the weekend.” Harrison said, ignoring Tom’s open mouth. Tom felt his heart drop and race simultaneously, not sure how he was going to handle seeing you. What was he going to do, just avoid you the entire time to ignore his feelings? Tom hadn’t spoken to Zendaya in days, and even she knew the reason why.
“Oh, um, that’s cool. Cool, yeah, you know….Y/N’s cool. Great, I’m gonna go shower. Maybe...uh...I can come with you to the airport?” Tom stuttered, trying to hide his nerves. Harrison wanted to laugh, but restrained himself.
“If you want? I mean, just don’t do anything stupid please.” Harrison said, getting up to change. Tom nodded silently, his mind racing with all the things he had to do to get ready. He’d need to shave, change his clothes, appear like he wasn’t a nervous wreck. Appear like he was over you, when he’d fallen deeper. It was like fighting his heart, and Tom was losing
Shit, why did you have to come and make everything difficult?
“Wouldn’t dream of it.”
“This has to be the stupidest thing you’ve done in a while” Bailey was quick to give you her opinion while you were packing, and part of you knew she was right.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
“Okay, thank you. Love that you’re so concerned, but I’ll be fine. If Tom is there, I’m just gonna ignore him.” You said, zipping up your bag. There wasn’t much to take for the weekend, and you never packed much to begin with. Bailey opened her mouth to say something, but changed her mind at the last minute.
“Alright, everything’s done. My flight is in an hour and a half, so I’m gonna head out now. You’ll be okay alone, right?” You teased, watching her roll her eyes with a smile.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m a big girl, I think I can take care of myself. Keep me updated, okay? And if it gets too weird, just come home. Harrison will just have to deal with Tom on his own.” Bailey replied, helping you carry your purse downstairs.
“Seriously, what’s the worst that can happen? He tries to kiss me or something, which we both know will NEVER happen. We both don’t like each other, Tom will stay away from me I can guarantee it.” You said, waving to the driver outside and giving Bailey a quick hug. She squeezed you a little, watching you get into the car.
“Did you tell Adrian?” She called from the door, and you froze for a minute. You had not, in fact, told your boyfriend you were leaving for the weekend. To spend it in London with a friend that wasn’t a girl and his apparent enemy. You hadn’t even told him you were free for the weekend.
Well, too late now.
“Yeah, of course.” You lied, watching her relax a little. She waved from the door as the car pulled away, and you sat back in your seat as the driver kept his eyes on the road.
You really should have told Adrian.
“Mate, you didn’t need to get all dressed up for her. She’s got a boyfriend.” Harrison sniggered when Tom came out looking very dressed up. It was something he’d worn to Jimmy Kimmel once, and Harrison could see Tom’s face burn at his words.
“Shut up, it’s not that fancy. I know she’s got a boyfriend, he threatened me in the bathroom last week.” Tom grumbled, taking his phone from the table. Harrison quirked an eyebrow, but he didn’t push it. This was the first he was hearing about an actual confrontation from Tom, but he wouldn’t have put it past Adrian. He didn’t much like your boyfriend either.
“Can I ask you something?” Harrison ventured, testing the waters a little. Tom rolled his eyes, putting on his shoes by the door.
“Can I even stop you?” He groaned, standing up and crossing his arms. Harrison got his keys from the couch and moved closer, studying Tom’s face.
It was nervous, he knew what Harrison was going to ask.
“Are you in love with her?”
Tom’s eyes widened a little, but not enough to indicate he was surprised by the question. He had to have known it was coming. He looked down quickly, but Harrison caught the sight of his eyes watering a little. For a moment it was radio silence, and Harrison thought he wouldn’t answer. The tears spilled out of Tom’s eyes.
“What does it matter if I am?” Tom’s voice was quiet, like he was struggling to get it out. He knew that once he said those words, he was truly fucked. Harrison knew that too, which was why he wasn’t prepared for what Tom said next.
“I love her, Haz. And I don’t know how to stop.” Tom wiped his eyes, feeling his resolve crumble. All the days he spent telling himself to get over you, because he was the one who ruined everything. Tom had only half believed the lie, and now that the words had materialized in front of him it washed over him like a wave. The pain, the heartbreak, the intense pining and longing for someone he couldn’t have.
Because you weren’t his to want. You wanted nothing to do with him.
“I don’t think love works like that. You just have to let it go, Tom.” Harrison was startled when Tom hugged him, feeling him shudder a little. He’d known all along, that you had taken a part of him. It was so easy to see, the way you made him feel. Harrison remembered how excited Tom had been when you said yes to the date, the way he talked about you and how his eyes lit up.
Where had it all gone wrong?
“If I see her, I might lose my mind. I’ve been beating myself up over what happened, and it hurts even thinking about it. I thought if I stayed away, remembered what that prick told me, it would go away. Why does it hurt so much?” Tom cried, wetting Harrison’s shirt slightly. Harrison let him cry for a few minutes, knowing Tom would feel better after. He didn’t know what to say or do, he had yet to be in love. But this wasn’t like anything Harrison had seen before, Tom had never been this way.
What he felt was real, it was vulnerable and raw. And you meant more to him than he’d thought.
“Tom? I’m going to say something and I want you to listen.” Harrison said, and Tom broke away rubbing at his eyes.
“You need to tell her how you feel, before it’s too late. Tell her everything, or you’re gonna lose her forever.” Harrison put a hand on Tom’s shoulder, passing him to get to the door. Tom stood still, staring ahead at the wall.
“What if she still hates me? Or she’s in love with Adrian?” Tom’s voice cracked, not wanting to turn around and face his best friend. Because he knew what Harrison would say, and it frightened him.
“You have to make up your mind, Tom. Either you want her or you don’t. But you’re gonna have to fight for Y/N, she deserves a lot. And if you really love her, then you’ll sober up and join the battle. It’s your call.” Harrison sighed, opening the door and leaving Tom alone in the living room. Tom took a deep breath and closed his eyes, your face being the first thing he saw. It had been the only thing he’d seen for weeks at night.
Tom knew what he had to do. He was scared, but it was clear to him.
He had to win you back before it was too late.

Multiplicity and what identification and representation means to Us
Madeline: I don’t remember there being many cool, attractive, and overall desirable but not fetishized (bye yellow fever) representations of Asian people in mainstream media while I was growing up in the early 2000s. The Asian media I did consume was introduced to me by my dad, so you can imagine the kind of outdated and endearingly weird characters I was exposed to as a kid. Think blind Japanese swordsman Zatoichi or humanoid child robot Astro Boy, both of which originated in Japan around the 60s. As for celebrities, I occasionally heard people talking about Lucy Liu or Jackie Chan, but only as defined by their stereotypical Asian-ness. My point is that this kind of cultural consumption fell into one of two categories: that of obscurity, which suggests that cultural objects are created by Asians for Asians (bringing to mind labels like “Weeb” for Western people who love anime), or that of hypervisibility grounded in stereotypical exoticism. You’d be hard pressed to find a film that passes the Asian Bechdel test.I didn’t discover K-pop until coming to college when I became curious about who my white friends were fawning over all the time. Since then, it’s been really neat to see how K-pop has become popularized as one of the many facets of America’s mainstream music and celebrity culture, especially when artists write and perform songs in Korean despite the majority of their audience lacking Korean language fluency. This suggests that something about the music is able to transcend language barriers and connect people despite their differences. Today it’s not uncommon to see Korean artists topping Billboard’s hot 100 hits, being interviewed on SNL, winning American music awards, gracing the cover of Teen Vogue, or being selected as the next brand ambassador for Western makeup brands like M.A.C. If you were to ask your average high school or college student if they know Blackpink, BTS, or EXO, they would probably be familiar with one of the groups whether or not they identify as Asian.What does this mean, then, for young Asian-Americans to grow up during a time when Asian celebrities are thought to be just as desirable as people like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, or Michael B. Jordan? What does it mean to see an Asian person named “Sexiest International Man Alive”, beating out long-time favorite European celebs? What does it mean for popularity to exist outside of the realm of the racialized minority and for it to build connections across minority cultures? Of course, fame can be toxic and horrible-- it is, at times superficial, materialistic, gendered, fetishized, and absolutely hyper-sexualized-- but I for one think it’s pretty damn cool to see people who look like me featured in mainstream American culture.I’ve found that throughout the semester, my understanding of Asian presence in America (American citizen or otherwise) has been deeply shaped by our discussions of identity politics and marginalization, another class I’m taking on intergenerational trauma, and my own identity as a Laotian-American woman. Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about the similarities between American proxy wars in Korea (The Forgotten War) and Laos (The Secret War), both of which involved US bombing of citizens in the name of halting communism. Taking this class has challenged me to reconceptualize how we make sense of mass atrocity in relation to a pan-Asian identity, especially when contending with how trauma and violence can act as a mechanism for cultural production, and I look forward to exploring this more in my thesis.
Cyndi: K-pop is always just the beginning. Enough in and of itself, any interest in the genre at all reinvigorates the consumer to become more engaged with the world in which it exists. Two years ago, I got into a big, but in hindsight pretty silly, argument with my mom when I started going to a Korean hair salon (because of my K-pop delulus / Jennie prints) instead of seeing Maggie, our Vietnamese hairdresser who I can usually only see twice a year on our bi-annual visits to California to visit extended family. My mom told me the Koreans don’t need our money, they are already richer than we will ever be. Who are ‘the Koreans’? Who is ‘we’?? Is every person of Korean descent doing better than every person of Vietnamese descent in America? And #why is my mom being A Hater? Surely, sharing our identity as ‘perpetual guests’ in America should create some sort of solidarity, or at least, allow for transitory economic collaboration??? I give my money to white people all the time: to McDonald’s (Cookie Totes), to Target, to Swarthmore College.
K-pop cannot be the end. As much as I enjoy the music, the show, and the celebrities, I also know in my heart that the current international interest in K-pop will not last. As an almost perfect and perplexing exemplification of modern global capitalism, the industry will over-expand and thus wear itself out. I always see the subtle disappointment on my language teachers’ faces when they ask me how I came to take interest in Korean, and I have to answer ‘K-pop’, because that is the truth; that is not where I am at now, but it will always be how I began. It has become clear to me that this disappointment is not just a generational difference. Maybe these old people are jealous of pop stars like how I also have to question whether I am secure in myself when I see a 14 year old accomplishing things I as a 21 year old could never accomplish in my long life. I am coming to understand that part of their reaction comes from the fact that there is a fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation, that pop culture is ephemeral, but they have lived their lives as entirely theirs. Casual or even consuming interest for the parts of culture that are bright, and clean, and easy cannot ever stand in for true racial empathy, though it is where many of us start. Identity in K-pop is merely another marketing technique, but to the community of fans and lovers, it is something that is real, lived, and embodied. I find that looking at K-pop always brings forth my most salient identities in terms of gender, race, and sexuality. As much as female group members express affection and jokingly portray romantic interest toward one another, would it ever be accepted if these jokes were no longer jokes, but lived realities? Even if the K-pop industry itself did not seek to produce fan communities of this magnitude, these communities that have been founded in response to it are here to stay. Lowe argues that “to the extent that Asian American culture dynamically expands to include both internal critical dialogues about difference and the interrogation of dominant interpellations” it can “be a site in which horizontal affiliations with other groups can be imagined and realized” (71). A recent striking example is Thai fans’ demand to hear from Lisa on the protests -- a primarily youth-led movement against the government monarchy--going on in Thailand. Although she is, of course, censored and silenced on this topic, the expectation is still there; fans are holding their idols to a standard of political responsibility.
Jimmy: I haven’t really paid much attention to K-pop until working on this project. Sure, my cousins would do anything to go see BTS perform in person, but I didn’t care so much. Or maybe, I was just not saturated with the cultural zeitgeist. Whereas they live in the center of a cosmopolitan city which imports and exports, my hometown hums white noise. Increasingly, though, K-pop has entered into my life and the wider American cultural space. Now, K-pop tops the charts and is featured on late-night talk shows. Whether or not you are a devout follower, you have probably encountered K-pop in some form. It was not until I went to Swarthmore that I have “become” Asian American. Back home, my friends are primarily either white or Vietnamese-American. And even though I did recognize that I had an “Asian” racial identity mapped onto me, I did not consider it to be based on any politics. After engaging with and working within Organizing to Redefine “Asian” Activism (ORAA) on campus, as well as taking this course, I have a better grasp of what it means to rally around an Asian American identity. It is a way to organize and resist. Reflecting on my political evolution, I feel comforted and alienated by the cultural weight of K-pop in America. It is amazing to see the gravity of cultural production shift away from the West. And to have global celebrities from Asia is great. Yet, K-pop is limited as a platform for Asian Americans to create identity. What are the consequences when mainstream ideas about contemporary “Asian” culture are still perpetually foreign from America? Is Asian American community just built around transnational cultural objects like K-pop and bubble tea? Does the economic and cultural capital of K-pop held by its idols obscure or erase the heterogeneity and multiplicity of Asian Americans?
Jason: The first time I heard K-Pop was when Gangnam Style came on during a middle school social event when everyone is standing in their social circles doing their best not to be awkward when teacher chaperones are constantly staring at the back of your head seeing if any wrongdoing would occur. At that time, I could never imagine the K-Pop revolution that would occur within the American music industry. Anytime I turn on the radio it is only a matter of time until a BTS song will start being blasted from the speakers. It is crazy to think that K-Pop has become so widespread within American popular culture that mainstream radio stations in Massachusetts are so willing to play K-Pop, even the billboards of 104.1 “Boston’s Best Variety” are plastered with BTS, because they know that is what their audience wants. Eight years ago, during that middle school social Gangnam Style was more about being able to do the dance that accompanied the song rather than the song itself. This has completely changed as more and more people are finding themselves becoming devout supporters of K-Pop. This class and project have continuously been pushing me out of my comfort zone by engaging in literature that I would never have read and discussions that I would never have imagined participating in. I have even listened to more K-Pop over the past couple of weeks than I had ever before in my life. I was impressed by myself when a song by BLACKPINK came on and the radio host said here’s some new music that I knew that the song was from their first album that came out around a month ago. I am grateful that I have been pushed out of my comfort zone and “forced (by having to actually do the homework)” to engage in the material of the class. Who knows how long this K-Pop fascination will last in American popular culture, but I am glad that I could be a part of it rather than letting it pass me by and staying within my comfortable music sphere of country, pop, and British rap.

summary: the reader, a youtuber, joins the ‘pregnant for twenty-four hours challenge’, and tom didn’t know he could fall for her even harder until he saw her.
a/n: this was supposed to be for @spiderboytotherescue’s 4k writing challenge. i ended up losing track of time but i figured i would post it anyways! congrats, amber 💞

“Hey, guys, welcome back to my channel! I’m doing a vlog style video because we’re doing something very interesting today,” you announce, your voice sounding exaggeratingly enthusiastic. Pointing the camera down at the box in front of you, you continue your introduction, “I decided to jump on the bandwagon, so we’re gonna be pregnant for twenty-four hours!”
Pushing the red button on your Canon, you place the camera down on the floor once it stops recording. You flip open the lid of the box, taking in the sight of the fake pregnant belly. Tessa scurries over, her claws scraping against the hardwood floor. Understanding what’s happening, you quickly pick up the camera and press the record button, focusing the lens on the Blue Staffy. She sniffs the prop curiously, bumping into it with her wet nose. You giggle, catching it all on film. Eventually, she loses interest and you pause the recording once again, putting the camera aside. You grunt, grabbing the skin-colored prop from the box, not expecting it to be as heavy as it is. Pushing yourself off of the floor, you bring it with you into the bedroom. The bed bounces slightly as you drop it down next to your three pre-selected outfits. After getting the camera from the living room, you press record, making sure the outfits are in frame.
You quickly film a clip explaining how you picked three outfits, hoping they would still fit you with a fake bump. The sounds of Tessa playing with one of her many squeaky toys fill the apartment, mixing with your own as you struggle to strap the belly on. Releasing a sigh of relief once it’s finally on, you throw your mustard yellow button-up maxi dress on, finding the whole ordeal a lot more difficult than it normally would have been. Picking up the PowerShot from your bed, you hit record once again, making sure the settings are all equally adjusted before turning around toward the mirror. A genuine gasp of surprise escapes you, seeing the dress wrap almost perfectly around the prop strapped to your body. You film yourself in the mirror, following the length of your frame from your feet to your head.
“It’s kinda freaky how real it looks, huh?” you ask your subscribers, turning to your side and wrapping your free arm underneath the protruding belly. “This is so crazy! I think I’m gonna with the dress for now because this belly is bigger than I expected, and I don’t think my shorts will fit.”
Continuing to film yourself in the mirror, you explain to your viewers how you’re going to meet up with Tom on set for lunch. You feel your nerves begin to bubble at the thought of showing Tom your dramatic change. He had been gone for hours at a time the past two weeks and you hadn’t been able to tell him you were planning on filming this video. Turning the camera off, you throw it into your black backpack along with your wallet and phone charger. You give yourself one last look in the mirror, still mesmerized by how real it looks. Although you probably wouldn’t admit it out loud, the fake look was beginning to grow on you. Closing the door to the bedroom, you step back into the living room, catching the attention of Tessa. Her large body snakes off the couch and she trots toward you, her tail wagging. You pet her head gently a couple of times, saying your goodbyes, before grabbing your car keys off the counter.
After parking at their filming location for the day, you rummage through your bag to make sure you have everything before exiting the car. Unlike the first time you had visited Tom on set, the security easily recognizes you this time without even having to show them your ID. The very first time you had visited Tom on set while filming for Captain America: Civil War, it took you ten minutes to try to convince the security guard that you were Tom’s girlfriend. Eventually, they had to call Tom over himself to verify your identity and once he did, the security guard wouldn’t stop apologizing. You chuckle quietly to yourself, remembering the memory vividly. Turning your camera back on, you press record, eager to catch the reactions of your friends.
After meeting Tom back in late 2014 at one of Harrison’s parties, the two of you quickly began dating. You were already growing quickly on YouTube at the time but kept your relationship out of the spotlight for months. You had been there through the entirety of his audition process for Spider-Man and you couldn’t be prouder of him. A few months ago, after a dinner filled with laughter, memories, and fairy lights, he had asked you to be his forever. The proposal was absolutely perfect and you could tell he had put a lot of planning into it, which made the gesture even more special. With both of you having busy schedules, you had decided to take it slow and plan whenever you had time. You had already been out dress shopping once but with no luck and Tom had asked Harrison to be his best man even before he asked you to marry him. Still, it felt surreal to be engaged to Tom. Just thinking about it made the butterflies in your stomach celebrate.
Remy is the first cast member you spot and as you get closer, you realize he’s chatting with Tony. You focus the camera on the two young men as you approach them, barely able to contain your excitement. You can tell they’re wearing their character clothes you glance around quickly, making sure they’re not about to start filming. Tony sees you first and as his facial expression changes, Remy turns around, too. Sending them a smile, you give them a small wave, waiting until you’re close enough to verbally greet them. Tony grins, wrapping his arm around you for a quick hug. He doesn’t say anything and you don’t either, wanting their genuine reactions. For a second, you wonder if it’s still as noticeable as when you left the house. Remy pulls you in next, the two of you greeting each other until he pauses mid-hug. He pulls away, gripping your upper arm gently as he looks down. His eyes double in size as a gasp escapes him.
“You’re- When? Tom never said anything. I swear-” Remy rambles and Tony joins in, their words mixing together.
“Guys! Guys, chill. It’s fake,” you giggle, giving the belly a few pats. “It’s for a video. See?”
You motion to the camera in your right hand and the two boys fall into silence. Still focusing the camera on them, you explain the video concept once again. They continue to gush about how real it looks and you feel a sense of accomplishment. After showing your friends and family the belly, you were planning on testing everyday activities and if people would treat you differently. If the belly looks real enough for them to believe it, multiple strangers probably would, too. The three of you catch up for a moment, talking about random things. Eventually, your patience thins out and you ask for Tom, itching to catch his reaction on camera.
They join you on your journey to find your fiancé, claiming he’s going to flip his shit and they don’t want to miss it. With determination in your step, you begin to walk over to where he’s supposed to be filming his next scene, recording the entire time. You hear him before you see him, his American accent is clear as day. A few seconds later, you hear Jacob and you assume they’re filming a scene with Peter and Ned. You watch from afar, making sure your camera is turned off, not wanting to get in trouble with Marvel. Tom’s lack of constraints is a well-known fact and the company and production crew always go to great lengths to make sure he doesn’t spill any valuable information, so you figure it’s best to keep the camera off for now. As you get closer, you notice Zendaya is standing off to the side, looking between the two men playing their characters. You realize she’s in the scene, too, and you watch intently as Peter, Ned, and Michelle bicker amongst each other.
Sensing the scene nearing its end, your nerves pick back up. You couldn’t quite put your finger on the exact reason behind your jitteriness but the suspense of waiting for Tom’s reaction made it twice as bad. Turning the camera back on as soon as Jon confirms the scene is over, you try your best to keep your composure. You don’t walk any closer just yet, explaining to the viewers that Tom still hasn’t seen you and that you’re currently on set to capture his reaction. Remy and Tony are chatting eagerly amongst themselves and you vaguely hear them placing a bet on Tom’s reaction, which makes the whole situation even more comical. Deciding it’s time, you head toward your fiancé and your two friends. Zendaya notices you first, Tom and Jacob facing the opposite direction, and you give her a small wave.
“Thomas,” she exclaims dramatically, making Tom jolt. “Why didn’t you tell me you’re having a baby?”
You can only imagine the look of confusion plastered on Tom’s face at Zendaya’s sudden outburst. The beautiful actress sends you grins toward you, returning the wave. You wonder briefly if she was just playing along or if she genuinely thought you were pregnant, but you before you could decide Tom’s surprised eyes met yours. He had seen you just last night before bed but the look of confusion is authentic. Coming to a halt in front of the small group, Tony and Remy in tow, you purse your lips together, barely able to contain your wide grin. Tom looks so genuinely confused that you find it incredibly difficult to muffle your laugh. A few moments pass and he notices the camera in hand, realization washing over his features. By now, seeing you with a camera in hand was second nature and it made sense that he didn’t question it.
“That looks so real,” Tom whispers in amazement, his eyes trained on the fake bump.
You rotate slowly, showcasing it from every possible angle, a string of giggles escaping you. “It does, doesn’t it? I’m doing a twenty-four-hour pregnant challenge for my channel.”
“Girl, you had me all excited!” Zendaya whines, grimacing in your direction. “I saw you walk in during the scene and I was about to stop right then and there, but then I noticed your camera.”
Tom inches forward, close enough for you to see the small freckles decorating his nose. Catching it all on film, you watch with admiration as he hesitantly reaches out to touch the pretend bump. The groups awe aloud and before you can stop it, the familiar heat spreads across your cheeks. You swear you hear the sound of someone’s camera, but you’re too preoccupied with looking at Tom to investigate. Although you physically can’t feel his hand, you can’t help but notice how perfectly it fits against the bump. The two of you had discussed marriage and babies multiple times, but it was more small comments here and there than an actual serious conversation. Tom always told you stories about him and his siblings, and you knew he wanted a lot of kids. You wanted kids, too, but you had never decided on a number, figuring you would want to experience motherhood first. Seeing Tom interact with the bump - fake or not - made your biological clock tick faster. Just by the look on his face, you knew you wanted him to be the father of your kids and the sooner, the better.
The others took turns feeling the huge jelly-like shape strapped to your body as well. It felt slightly odd, having them all put their hands where a potential real bump could be someday, and you made a mental note to explain that to the camera later. After all, this was meant as a test to see how it feels to be pregnant. The entire time, Tom’s gaze lingers on you; his dark orbs following your every move. You don’t know whether to find it slightly concerning or very adorable. The group continued to gush over the realness, but you were too caught up on Tom’s focus on you.
“Stop looking at me like that,” you state softly, but loud enough for him to hear over the continuous chatter.
“Like what?”
You can’t tell if he’s being serious or playing dumb, so with a sigh, you elaborate, “Like… I don’t know! You keep looking at me funny.”
“Sorry, darling,” he apologizes automatically. “I didn’t mean to- It’s just… It looks so real.”
“I know,” you shrug. “Is it weirding you out?”
Tom shakes his head immediately. “Quite the opposite, in fact. I can’t wait for you to be pregnant for real.”
“Aw, you guys are the cutest! This is so going on Instagram,” Zendaya gushes and once again, you feel your cheeks heat up.
If you weren’t sure before, you definitely are now. Tom is the one. He’s the one you want to be with; to marry, to have kids with, to grow old with. He’s the one you want to fall asleep on the couch with and the one you want to wake up to in the morning. You want to continue getting lost in his eyes until the skin around them wrinkles. It is almost silly, really, but his laugh is your favorite sound in the entire world. It’s just something about that melodic sound that makes all your worries melt away. His familiar scent is your favorite smell, and it instantly calms your nerves. You had always known you wanted Tom to be by your side in parenthood. From the moment you saw him with Paddy to all the kids he had the opportunity to meet through his role as Spider-Man, you knew he would be the perfect dad. Now, the day you could call him yours forever couldn’t come fast enough.

Prompt: Missing You by All Time Low
Genre: Slight angst, mostly fluff; friends to lovers; slow burn
Warnings: Language/Swearing
Summary: Close to failing some of her college classes, (Y/N) is at a loss with her life and isn’t sure how to get back on her feet again while constantly running around everywhere for everything in her life. Her best friend, Zendaya, tries to support her in every way she can, but isn’t sure what (Y/N) really needs from her as a friend. However, Zendaya is still doing whatever she can to help her best friend. That’s what they’re for, right?
(Y/N) threw her textbook at the wall before dropping to the ground, crying uncontrollably. She just checked her grade on a test she took the day before, only to find out that she barely even passed it by a couple points. She was barely passing the class all together and needed some A’s on her assignments and tests if she wanted to pursue the career she wanted with this degree.
To say she was working hard was an understatement. Every night before a test, she would study for hours on end until she was about to fall asleep on her textbook(s). It wasn’t all her classes she was having trouble in, thankfully, but this one class in particular she needed a good grade on. As long as she got a B, she didn’t care what she had to do in order to pass the class.
Her best friend however was constantly worrying about her health, physically and mentally as she was always doing something school related and never had time to take a break or relax. Zendaya could tell that (Y/N) was struggling and stressing about the few classes she was having trouble in and wanted to do something to help her, whether it was helping her study for a test or take her out to lunch and even have a spa day. She just couldn’t bear to see (Y/N) like this. As (Y/N) continued to cry over her classes and future plans, her phone began to ring.
Incoming call from Zendaya
She sighed, taking a deep breath to compose herself before answering the call with the best voice that read ‘no I wasn’t just crying, I’m totally okay.’
“Hey, Z. What’s up?”
Zendaya could immediately hear the strain in her friend’s voice, feeling her heart ache at the sound of her friend in pain. “Not much, I was gonna get some Chinese for dinner and wanted to know if you wanted to join me.”
“I don’t know, I got another test to study for that’s on Friday.”
‘Today is Saturday, (Y/N).’ Z thought to herself before replying, hoping to sound more convincing. “When was the last time you ate something other than instant noodles, salads, and ice cream?”
“...Uh, I think.. Maybe..”
“Be ready to go in 10, I’m not taking no for answer and you know it.”
Zendaya ended the call before relaxing in the driver’s seat of her car. She was already in the visitors parking lot of the building (Y/N)’s dorm room was at, already having planned this a couple hours ago. She needed to do something for her best friend, even if it was taking baby steps.
While at the restaurant, (Y/N) was picking at her food with her chopsticks and listening to Zendaya tell her about the week she’s had. Z, of course, made her story short and to the point so that she could finally talk to (Y/N) about her current state. When she finally finished speaking, she took a bite of her food and gestured to her friend with her chopsticks. “What about you? How are your classes and such going?”
This was the one thing (Y/N) was hoping wouldn’t come into the conversation. Knowing Z, however, it was bound to happen in one way or another. She shrugged, looking down at the side of rice on her plate and trying to seem casual about it and stressed out of her mind. “They’ve been alright. I mean, no one said said college would be a piece of cake, right?” She laughed softly, trying to lighten the mood. She mentally begged for Z to change the subject and talk about something else. Literally, anything. Too bad Z could see through her.
“That is true, but you know that I’m here to help you if you ever need it.” She reached across the table to hold (Y/N)’s hand and squeeze it reassuringly. Z waited for (Y/N) to finally look her in the eye before speaking again. “I know that school isn’t easy. But you’ve come this far, and I know you can get through any rough patch thrown at you.” She noticed the uneasy look in her friend’s face, as if she was contemplating on saying something. Z tried to push her in that direction.
‘I’m your friend, (Y/N). Please talk to me..’
Z continued. “Maybe the classes or the major itself aren’t the right fit for you. I changed my mind on what I wanted to do in life so many times before I got to where I am today, and you know it. So don’t feel bad if you start out a little messy in your work and classes. You’ll clean yourself up again. I know you will.” She waited for (Y/N) to say something, anything. She wanted to hear the truth from her first hand. After all, they say admitting the problem is the first step to recovery.
It was silent between the two of them before Zendaya realized that (Y/N) was looking down at their still interlocked hands. She pulled away, afraid she made her friend uncomfortable with the action. They didn’t say anything for a solid 5 minutes before Z changed the subject entirely. The two eventually finished dinner before heading to Z’s car to take (Y/N) back to her dorm, going their separate ways after that. Zendaya wanted to help. She wanted her best friend back to the happy go lucky self she had known for years on end. But how can she help if (Y/N) isn’t being fully honest with her?
The following week, Zendaya texted or called (Y/N) almost all day (every day) to see how she was doing with her classes and such. Even if she didn’t reply that much, she kept messaging her.
Hey, how’s your study session going?
Don’t over work yourself. Take a break or two if you really need it
And please don’t forget to eat dinner like last night lol
Z tried to sound uplifting to make (Y/N) happy and not stress too much over her work. But with hourly responses, it was hard to stay on the positive side of things. However, one text in particular caught Z’s attention.
I’m taking a 20 minute break to eat dinner lol are you happy xD
‘That’s more like it.’ Zendaya thought to herself as she read the text. ‘Now if I can just keep her in a positive mind set for the rest of the week.’ She didn’t hesitate to reply.
Let me guess, instant ramen?
She waited a minute for a reply.
Actually it’s regular ramen, thank you very much
Zendaya couldn’t help the smile on her face. She felt like she was getting her best friend back. Maybe she could even help (Y/N) with her studying so that she could get her grades higher and make her feel better. She wanted to bring up the matter of her friend’s health, but wasn’t sure how to without making it seem negative. ‘Might as well give it a shot, right?’
So how is the studying going?

A couple minutes went by before Z got a reply. It made her a little anxious, afraid she had made things worse. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case.
I wouldn’t mind a little study help. Tomorrow sounds great :D

Zendaya didn’t realize she was grinning until she got up from her bed to go brush her hair before going to sleep. She was really proud of herself for helping her friend out. She decided to send another text.
If you ever wanna hang out again sometime soon then just say the word and I’ll be right over
And that means no school/work talk from either of us!
Just a girl’s night/day for us to relax and sort ourselves out from all the shit that goes down in our lives :D
After clicking send, Z read over the texts, hoping they didn’t sound too cheesy or weird. Luckily, (Y/N) is kinda the same way.

Maybe getting (Y/N) out of this rough patch would be easier than Zendaya thought.
The study session between the girls the following day went really well. (Y/N) did well with the material that Zendaya was helping her with, Z was able to make (Y/N) smile and relax after she thought she had studied enough, they even ordered pizza to have for dinner at (Y/N)’s dorm. Currently, they were talking about whatever came to mind whether it was funny, sad, embarrassing, you name it. It’s what best friends do after all. And the best of best friends can tell when all your laughs are fake and smiles aren’t real.
Zendaya tried to get something out of (Y/N), but it just wasn’t working. She was missing her friend even though she was trying to be the happy girl Z had known for years. She wanted her not to worry, but that had already been happening for weeks on end.
Zendaya was at a loss. She didn’t know what to do. Yet there was so much more left to do.

a/n: this is for @peeterparkr’s 3k writing challenge! congrats!
pairing: tom holland x reader
prompt: “If Walls Could Talk” by 5sos
word count: 1.9k
warnings: angst, lots of swearing, mentions of fighting/arguing. (possible trigger warning)
summary: y/n and tom have been broken up for a year and harrison has been there through every single moment leading up to it.
(flashbacks are in italics, texts are in bold)
Having a bday party tonight at my house, you up for it?
Tom looked at the text from Zendaya and confirmed that he was attending, to which she replied with a smiley face. He put his phone down on the counter and ate his breakfast with the tv playing softly in the background.
Harrison walked in, rubbing his eyes and muttering a groaned ‘morning’ before getting a bowl to serve himself some cereal. Tom responded back and continued eating.
“You get that invite from Z?” Harrison asked as he leaned against the counter, right across from him. Tom nodded, grabbing his phone and checking through his twitter.
“Are you going?” He asked again with hesitance, knowing that Tom doesn’t really attend Z’s parties only for the reason that Y/N might be there. There was still a slightly awkward tension that was present in the atmosphere when those two talked. Sure, they claimed they were friends but it will never be the same when they dated for two years, ending with a cheating scandal that had happened over a year ago.
Harrison was sitting there with his earphones in trying to block out all of the noise. This has been happening recently— Y/N and Tom getting into petty arguments and Harrison having to deal with it because he lives with them. He did interfere sometimes when he felt that one of them was getting a little too angry but always felt rude about doing it at any other time. So he just puts his earphones in, listens to some good music and texts as many people as he can while his heart is beating out of his chest.
This time was a little different. Of course, Harrison had his earphones in and he was distracted but he only heard Y/N’s voice yelling and Tom’s talking voice. Harrison turned down his volume, trying to listen in to what they were saying.
“How could you fucking do this to me?!”
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t—“
“Oh yeah because you obviously didn’t fucking mean to put your tongue down her throat! You’re a fucking liar, I hate you!”
And with that, Harrison jumped up at the sound of broken glass. He quickly ran to Tom and Y/N’s room to see her crying, throwing clothes into a suitcase and Tom cleaning up the broken vase on the floor.
“A-are you guys okay?” Harrison gulped, his heart rate beating a hundred times a minute. His voice was barely above a whisper and he was terrified, he had no idea why but seeing his best friends get into a fight this bad left him feeling so powerless and so heartbroken.
“No Haz, we’re not. I’m sorry you had to be here. I-I’ll call you later, alright?” Y/N responds with a shaky inhale, hugging him with one arm and leaving as quickly as she could, one suitcase in hand.
Tom nodded, his mouth filled with the last spoonful of cereal as he put his bowl in the sink. Harrison nodded before doing the same.
The truth is, Tom still felt devastated every single time he had to face her. Not only did he feel guilty, he felt ashamed, angry, confused because why the fuck would he do it in the first place? He was drunk and he was pissed at Y/N for a reason he can’t even remember anymore, which proves just how unnecessary his act of spite had been. He’s had so many regrets in his life, but that’s the only one he would take back with no hesitation.
It was ten at night and Tom and Harrison were out at some party to celebrate Tom’s role in the new Avengers movie. Y/N was too busy with exams at her university so she decided to stay home and study; however, she wanted to take some time to go to the store and buy Tom a quick little present to compensate for not being able to attend.
So she went to the supermarket to see if there was any available flowers or balloons or something because it’s already so late and she’s just trying to get out as fast as she could.
She ended up finding a decent-sized teddy bear and a couple of balloons that say ‘happy birthday’ so she desperately hoped that Tom sees it as a joke and not as a ‘wow she didn't even put effort into finding congratulation balloons’ situation because that’d be embarrassing. So she tied the balloon strings to the teddy bear’s bowtie and started driving towards the party.
She pulled up the loud party, and went inside with the balloons and the bear in her arms. She spotted Zendaya who laughed in excitement at the stuff she’s holding, offering her some help and a drink. Y/N explained the situation, only dropping off the stuff and then leaving to go study and Z nodded understandingly.
Y/N looked around for Tom, not seeing him at all with the people he usually hangs around with so she was starting to get frustrated. She finally spotted Harrison and Jacob playing beer pong and screaming their heads off as they made it into the opposing team’s cup. She smiled and went up to greet them, getting an excited scream and a group hug in return.
She asked them if they knew where Tom was and they said no, Harrison pausing before giving his answer. So Y/N groaned in annoyance and left the stuff on the dining table, telling Harrison to make sure it gets to Tom, and then she leaves.
That next morning she woke up to texts from Tom and Harrison on her phone that were sent at one in the morning.
I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you.
Tom arrived at Z’s house with Harrison by his side, a birthday gift in each of their hands. The door was open and revealed a beautiful Zendaya with the brightest smile on her face.
“Hey losers, glad you could make it.” She greeted each of them with a small hug and welcomed them inside. Her house was huge, people everywhere socializing and laughing, Bruno Mars was playing on the loud speakers (of course), and there were dogs running everywhere. Tom and Harrison made their way outside where they spotted Jacob, Laura, and Y/N.
Tom locked eyes with her, his face starting to burn up with embarrassment when she smiled and waved.
She went up to them and hugged them both, Tom catching a whiff of her soft scent. He smiled and spoke softly, telling her how it was nice to see her. She smiled back and returned the greeting, saying the same thing to Harrison.
Tom had just gotten the news that he was going to be a part of Avengers: Infinity War. He was with Harrison at the moment, shopping for something that he knew he wanted to do for a long time now.
Tom was buying an engagement ring. Yes, he’s only 21 but he has never felt sure about literally anything else in the world. He was so in love with Y/N, and the past few days have been a little rough due to Y/N being stressed from having to finish up her semester with exams, but he still felt it in his heart that the two of them were meant for each other.
So, he invited Harrison to hang out casually at the mall. They were walking around before they got the huge news about the movie, Harrison smiling with excitement and congratulating his best mate. Tom smiled at him.
“I was also wondering if you’d like to help me buy an engagement ring.” When Tom finished his sentence, Harrison jumped up from his chair and laughed, bringing Tom into the tightest hug he could give him. Tom was laughing, thanking him and his heart just filled with butterflies, knowing that this is actually real and he is actually going to pop the question.
They went to different jewelry stores and admired the glass cases that were displaying the beautiful diamonds that shine with elegance. Harrison was so excited to be doing this, the smile just couldn’t leave his face as he watched Tom pick out the best ring he could find.
“When are you going to do it?”
Tom decided he was going to throw a party that Saturday to celebrate his new role in the Avengers movie, but also propose to Y/N in front of all their close family and friends.
However, plans had changed because Y/N still had to study for the tests she had to take the following Monday so there was no way she was able to attend because she only had that weekend to finish up her studies. Tom had gotten mad at her, but truly it was because he was hurt that she wasn’t even going to celebrate a huge milestone in his life. It turned into a heated argument and the final agreement that Harrison had come up with was that it was best that Y/N stays home and they could celebrate separately.
But, Tom had gotten drunk and his anger towards Y/N just had to make an appearance when he saw one of her friends at the party.
“So, Y/N, how’s life treating you?” Harrison spoke up after their greetings, drinking from his cup of soda. Y/N immediately brightened up, her smile becoming wider and her eyes gleaming with excitement.
“It’s actually going pretty good. My job is actually something I want to do and I’m, uh, kind of dating someone now.” Y/N’s face turned a little pink, knowing that she just created a bit of tension between the group. Both Tom and Harrison raised their eyebrows in shock, not knowing at all about this news. Tom began to feel a little lightheaded as he stood there, hearing his own heart just fall down to his stomach.
After the awkward congratulations had happened, Tom excused himself to go talk to Jacob. Harrison glanced over at him, concerned about the way he’s feeling because, hell, he was going to propose to this girl who just said she’s in a relationship with someone else.
He was embarrassed, to say the least. He felt guilty and regretful that the girl he’s in love with had moved on. As Jacob made a joke to the group about Tom finally going to greet them, Tom looked over at Harrison and gave him a sad smile. Harrison did the same, and although he knows that Tom messed up, that’s still his best friend.
Harrison continued his conversation with Y/N, just catching up with each other on what they’ve been doing. He had to admit, he hated that the two of them never ended up together. He tried his best to help, and he vowed he will always keep their secrets and never say a word to anyone, especially when he knows how badly it can hurt the way they are seen. But there was just one of Tom’s secrets that he had to spill a little over six months ago, in hopes of bringing them back together again and have everything go back to the way it used to be.
“Tom was going to propose to you.”
It didn’t work.

Transiting Juno enters Aries
April 28 - July 1, 2018
Juno, the Lady Asteroid of committed relationships, has a natural affinity with the sign Libra - and therefore, when she finds herself in independent, headstrong Aries, Juno may not exactly appear to be well-placed. People seem more “committed” to their relationships with their own freedom and autonomy. And indeed, a transit of Juno through Aries will certainly bring those kinds of relationship issues to the forefront.
This transit may be a lot of fun, and perhaps beneficial, for singles - we can all work on our relationships with ourselves! We can take ourselves out on dates! In fact, given the nature of the aspects Juno will make, our ability to be independent will be tested. Do we really have what it takes to go it alone? Some of us will be “up” for that challenge; conversely, others will be terrified at the prospect of solitude. We’re likely to take some risks in our pursuit of others - but more likely to be impulsive and headstrong. Please, please remember to think things through whenever possible!
People in existing relationships either will need plenty of “space,” and/or will have partners who suddenly need more “space.” We’re worried about unequal relationships in that we suspect our partners may be trying to gain some advantage over us. We’re also very fond of having our own way in partnerships - we want 51% of the power. It may be useful, and illuminating, to consider the relationship as an entity unto itself.
But, Juno isn’t just significant others.
Protocol and social ritual: manners, courtesy, all that etiquette stuff. There isn’t going to be a lot of patience for “trite” things like “please” and “thank you,” but at the same time we’ll be plenty pissed off if other people aren’t polite to us.
Feminine beauty: again, the Aries lack of patience will certainly manifest itself here as not wanting to waste a lot of time on this or that beautification process. (Which will be amplified while Venus remains in Gemini.) We might also be tempted into some “instant,” impulsive thing, like a drastic haircut.
Creative talent in the arts: everybody’s a soloist!
Women’s rights: “militant feminist” comes right to mind. How unfortunate that there is so much to be militant about. We’re impelled to take action against all oppression and to “strike a blow” for equality. Speaking of which….
Symbol for/of the powerless: I keep seeing Diana Prince.
Weather and the atmosphere: this is the scary part. Juno through Aries will square first Saturn/Capricorn and then Pluto/Capricorn; both are indicative of harsh, difficult weather situations. We can get into a lot of trouble when we’re too imprudent and overconfident.

This is so intriguing to me - both Juno and Chiron have associations with the sign Libra (at least in my cosmology they do), but here they are, conjunct in earliest Aries. Issues about self-worth will undoubtedly crop up at this time. How can we expect to have healthy, fulfilling relationships with other people, when our relationship with ourselves is so damaged? If deep down we don’t believe ourselves worthy or deserving - if we’re looking for self-validation through having a relationship with someone else - we can only fail.

Vesta has JUST stationed retrograde; this will most likely manifest as overwhelming self-absorption. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, or a new situation; we’ve all been exhorted to “know thyself” since the Delphic Oracle at least. We run into trouble when we expect everybody else to be as fascinated with ourselves (or more so) than we are. Remember another old maxim - “To make a friend, be one” - and use that as a guide for the navel-gazing.

We can’t go into relationships expecting the other person(s) to “complete” us or to make up for our shortcomings. If we’re personally lacking, we need to make up for it ourselves (with determined and persistent effort), rather than attempting to camouflage our flaws via a flashy relationship. And, don’t shirk responsibilities.

Speaking of self-worth! How much of our self-assessment is based on what other people think of us, versus what we know deep down, to be of genuine, authentic truth? The majority of us want to be liked and approved of by others; we don’t always worry about (again) being worthy of others’ regard. And we do some pretty drastic, ultimately alienating things when we’re afraid of losing others’ regard. Better to be “just” ourselves.

We are really just so stupidly set on our tribal traditions, sometimes, without really thinking too much (or too deeply) about them. We bachelors/spinsters may rub our single blessedness into everybody’s face. This could also go 100% the other way, and we bring home a potential partner guaranteed to set off parental/tribal disapproval.

More severe weather, and not just climate. The kinds of tensions caused by this square boil down, mostly, to issues of domination - especially within relationships, of course, but also within the larger society. We’re liable to lash out against institutional, structural racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, all the myriad ways “you’re not a straight white Christian property-owning male, so you don’t count.” We aren’t particularly in a frame of mind to team up with others, but that’s what it will take to correct this.

How to train your dragon (1 and 2 i can’t decide) I fucking LOVE dragons. the idea to fucking ride one in the sky?!?! fucking DOPE. the idea that theyre also SCALY DOGS?!?!? MOTHER.FUCKING.DOPE. i just associate the idea of freedom with flying through the sky and that feeling was conveyed really well in that movie so i really loved it!

honestly? kinda dumb now that i look back on it. it was a peck, i wasn’t even like mentally prepared and it happened way faster than i thought. yknow how everyone says “ OH MY GOD WE SHOULD KEEP IN TOUCH” once you move? yeah thats bullshit. honest to god bullshit. i kept tabs on everyone when i moved to a different city and when i came down to visit for my birthday inviting all those people who supposed “wanted to keep in touch with me” literally 1 person showed up. and i think they only showed up because our parents were friends too. so yeah. fuck people sometimes.
7: Talk about your biggest insecurity.
hygiene. breath, hair, clothes, eating habits, manners, anything that might make me come off as unclean to people im trying to impress drives me off the fucking wall. specially at formal events. if im wearing snazzy clothing at like a suite 16 or a debut or a wedding bet you $100 that im adjusting little aspects of my appearance every like 15 seconds. eating mints the second one is finished, trying not to be too close to someones face when talking, even when i fucking fart i always take note of which way the wind is blowing, or im sitting down on something that can absorb the stench, how much pressure is in my gut and how much of it can i let out in small bursts to avoid sound. that or asian dick syndrome. yknow. haha asians got a small dick? that kinda shit bugs me a bit. not a ton but more than i thought it would

my singing and impressions? i once scared some friends when i imitated a party blower kazoo thingy since the ones they bought from the dollarstore didnt make any sound. same as my singing, i tend to get high scores and i impressed my cousins once with a perfect score on a backstreet boys song HEH

my biceps? theyre not like chris hemsworth level of meaty but like when i worked at this physically demanding job my coworkers are like “ woah dude ur arms are different from mine, if you worked out theyd look so ripped” that kinda stuck with me for a while specially knowing they were a football jock and they had their own special diet and fitness instructor or something. i also like my smile/ jaw shape? my hair can look pretty good too sometimes

i can’t really remember any that stand out they were all equally fun. dont get me wrong some were super fun its just that it was also followed by a lot of bad choices that kinda take it down a notch. i will say this one party a friend hosted where i got to meet a BUNCH of new people. i also snorted some fundip powder as a dare. they refuse to let it go so i figure might as well own it. i also landed some sweet shots in beerpong

when i was a kid me and bunch of other kids decided to clog a slide with just a shit ton of people and one of my friends who came after me kept pushing me to the point i was hanging on for dear life using only my knee down that was wedged between a fat kid and my friend who went after me. i fell off eventually knocking skulls with another kid near the end of the slide(this slide was shaped like a spring so that explains why there were kids under me) my arm bend backwards for a sec after hitting another kid’s legs, and then i fell chest and fast first on the asphalt winding myself. kids are rugged as all hell man they can really take a hit. i walked it off but god damn if i didnt get bruises and shit afterwards. or that time i got beaten so bad by father dearest because work was stressful and i ended up blacking out. wasn’t even allowed to go to the hospital. just kinda laid down in my room with bruises all over.

relying on people for happiness. distracting myself from sadness and responsibilities. procrastinating in general

they just got out of a relationship with someone and was avoiding them profusely and i just started to get to know them. we got to the point that when she was ready we could date. little did i know that later, she would end up dating a friend of mine. to which i promptly had the appropriate reaction of crying myself to sleep, sending that friend a text message with all the things he should know to keep that girl happy and ultimately smashing a lot of things (some bottles actually because we were gonna build a sculpture or something together with em. man middle school was a fucking RIDE)

family will be there for you in the end. (not because they want to but because the world teaches them that they have to meaning they will help just in their own way and to their own ends.) friends come and go. they always have always will. anyone who says forever is a fuckin idiot. lovers come and go thats just a natural part of growing up. and lets be real all the people that said they would self harm ultimately never did so dont stress it so much god damn(but dont let it slide either)

Prompt: Missing You by All Time Low
Genre: Slight angst, mostly fluff; friends to lovers; slow burn
Warnings: Language/Swearing, some self deprecation
Summary: Close to failing some of her college classes, (Y/N) is at a loss with her life and isn’t sure how to get back on her feet again while constantly running around everywhere for everything in her life. Her best friend, Zendaya, tries to support her in every way she can, but isn’t sure what (Y/N) really needs from her as a friend. However, Zendaya is still doing whatever she can to help her best friend. That’s what they’re for, right?
As (Y/N)’s semester continued, so did her and Zendaya’s weekly hang outs. Whether they were studying for her class or just watching a new show, they got together more and more often. And (Y/N)’s grades were getting better by the day. Ever test got a higher scorer by a few points each time, and she couldn’t be more proud of herself. Hell, Zendaya was so proud of her friend for her first B on a test in months that she actually picked her up in a hug, spinning her around and just congratulating her. She felt so accomplished in helping her best friend and couldn’t be happier. She started seeing (Y/N) in a new light; brightening up to her bubbly, go lucky self she once was before she started college. That was the (Y/N) that Z knew.
One day when she was helping her study for another test, they were taking their 15 minute break from 30 minutes of studying when she decided to bring up some personal stuff. She knew that school was tough on her friend, but was there more she didn’t know about going on back home?
“Hey, how’s the family doing by the way?” She tried to sound casual as (Y/N) put another record on the record player in her room, changing the music to go from Ed Sheeran to The Goo Goo Dolls. “They’re doing well. I mean, nothing new or bad going on.” Well that was a relief. But if that’s the case, then has she talked to her family about college at all this year? “Have they asked about your classes?” Z sat up from (Y/N)’s bed, looking at her friend from across the room. (Y/N) was placing the needle on the record, making the music come back on. “They have.”
“What have you told them?”
“That they’re fine. They don’t need to worry about me. I mean it’s my life after all, right?”
“Did you tell them how you’re thinking about changing your major?”
“..No.”
Z sighed, getting up from the bed but staying on the other side of the room. “Then are you staying in the major that you’re in now?” She needed to help (Y/N) sort out her life and find her place in the world. She couldn’t stand to see her suffer like this. The studying and such only help so much. “I don’t know. But I don’t need you telling me what I should do anymore, okay? I can do this myself. I just need you to be my friend. Nothing more.”
Nothing more? Z never even thought about more. So why did it hurt to hear her friend say that? She couldn’t stop her response, still thinking about what (Y/N) just said to her. “You know you can’t just cover up every mistake you’ve ever made, (Y/N). They all happen for a reason, because of your actions.”
“I know, because I’m just a fucking failure aren’t I? That’s all I’ll ever be to everyone I meet isn't it?” (Y/N)’s voice rose as she spoke, feeling tears wanting to come up but she continued to just rant about how awful she felt and compared herself to everyone else she’s ever met.
Zendaya started to get irritated from her words. It wasn’t the fact that (Y/N) was ranting about how she felt, she just couldn’t bare to hear anymore untruthful words coming from her friend’s mouth. Z knew that (Y/N) needed to vent about how she felt, but she just take it anymore. She herself felt like crying. (Y/N) stopped rambling on as Z placed her hands on her arms/shoulders, the tears finally started to fall silently. The only sounds in the room were that of the record player, now playing the song Come to Me by The Goo Goo Dolls, and the occasional car driving by the apartment complex her dorm was at.
“(Y/N),” Zendaya’s voice cracked slightly from holding back tears. She took a breath before continuing with what she was going to say. “You can grit your teeth, pull your hair, scream about everyone and everything you hate, but don’t you dare ever blame yourself for anything that is not your fault. Yes, some people may get nothing but straight A’s, maybe it was just how they were raised. To study for hours on end and that only work and school matter. You need to realize that that’s not all life is made out to be. You’re allowed to take a break, you’re allowed to make mistakes. Cause it’s life, and you’re gonna take yours back from every bad thing you believed to be true. Some things may be important, but you’re well being is always your first priority.”
Z didn’t realize that she started to cry a little as well from her speech, taking another breath before finishing what she was saying. “And remember, I will always be here for you. I’ve been missing you, the real you that was for the most part carefree and always up to hang out with her friends when she wasn’t studying for over 7 hours.” They both laughed softly, (Y/N)’s small smile making Zendaya grin.
Z couldn’t stop herself from pulling (Y/N) into a hug, holding her close, tight, and afraid to let go. (Y/N) hugged back, holding her just as tight to keep from crying anymore. Z let out a small whisper to herself, not caring if (Y/N) heard her or not. “Come back to me..”
The two stayed silent as the record player finished playing the song it was on.

After they calmed down, they decided to call it a night. It was getting late and both of them knew they needed to get some sleep. But (Y/N) couldn’t, and not because she was studying late into the night again.
She was thinking about Zendaya’s words towards her both that evening and over the past couple weeks. Maybe she really was right. Life is one big ride, and is it a wild one that you need to take. And at the end of the day, you really do have to accept the mistakes you’ve made in the past and realize there’s more to come in the future.
As the weeks of (Y/N)’s semester went by, she slowly started to return back to her (almost) carefree self. She didn’t study to the point of exhaustion, not get enough sleep due to studying or worrying over a test/assignment. But best of all, her grades got better and better with every test/assignment she turned in. They weren’t A’s, but they were for sure higher than her previous ones.
Zendaya was so proud of (Y/N) after finding out her final grades for the semester that she insisted on taking her out to dinner. That’s what friends do, right? Friends totally spend a couple hours choosing the right outfit and makeup for a night out with each other, right? Neither were oblivious to how they felt, but they weren’t sure about the other one. Has she started feeling this way as well?
Of course, neither had the courage to actually try and make a move. They had to just keep their emotions to themselves. The problem with that is that (supposedly) straight girls sometimes tend to flirt without even meaning to, especially close friends. A simple phrase like “Oh my god, I love you so much, thank you!” could send both of them into a spiral of thoughts, making everything worse for both of them.
Hey, I’m outside whenever you’re ready to go
Z’s text made (Y/N) even more anxious. Did she look nice enough? Was she overdressed? Was it even a good idea to fall for her best friend like this? ‘Fuck it. I’m gonna do something about this. And if it doesn’t work out, she’ll forgive me and understand… Right?‘ She headed out of her dorm, quickly getting in the car and smiling when she saw Zendaya. She’s beautiful..
“Hey,” Z smiled as well when she saw her friend. She looked gorgeous when she got all dressed up like this. Granted, she was always gorgeous in her eyes. “You ready to go?”
“Absolutely.” (Y/N) put her seatbelt on. “You mind telling me where it is we’re going now?” Z didn’t tell (Y/N) what was going on other than dinner. She was in for a rude awakening. Zendaya smirked a little at her friend’s statement, starting to back out of the parking space and drive onto the street. “You’ll see when we get there.” She was wanting to make a move as well, this one being more bold. She was taking her out on a date.
“Oh my god,” (Y/N) laughed softly, plugging her phone into the car’s AUX cord, “are you kidding me? At least tell me that I dressed okay for this place.” She smiled, trying to act as casual as possible. She played from their best friend playlist they both made. Zendaya smiled as the music started to play. “You look amazing, (Y/N). People can fuck off if they think otherwise.” ‘Was that too much?’ Z bit her lip, afraid she suddenly made the situation from casual to awkward. Luckily for her, (Y/N) blushed at her words. Too bad she couldn’t notice in the dark while also driving the car. “Thanks, Z.” (Y/N) decided to take the risk. “Same goes to you.” She giggled after, once again going for casual rather than awkward. More and more somewhat flirty exchanges were made between the two during the 15 minute car ride.
(Y/N) even tried to make an attempt at holding Zendaya’s hand before realizing that she had stopped the car, turning it off. “We’re here.” Z smiled and got out of the car, going to the back seat to grab some stuff. Meanwhile, (Y/N) got out of the car, looking around. “Where’s the restaurant?”
“Well, I was gonna make a reservation, but then I realized that you should be free to do/say anything you want while celebrating you and your grades. So I thought,” Z held up a picnic basket, blanket, and a bunch of fairy lights, “why not just make our own night out?”
(Y/N) smiled, in shock, admiration, maybe even love. She wanted to tell her how she felt. Surely this is a sign right? She walked over to Z, taking the lights from her. “Thank you, Z.” She didn’t even realize what she was doing until it was happening. She gave Z a quick kiss on the cheek before walking over to a nearby tree to start setting up the lights up and down the branches (thank god they had batteries with them). Zendaya stood there frozen for a second before realized what had happened. ‘I might have a chance after all.’
After they ate their dinner and packed everything up in the car, they decided to go walk around the park they were at. The girls told stories, shared jokes, and just had a great time enjoying each other’s company. Zendaya even decided to make the bold move of going to hold (Y/N)’s hand, grinning when she felt her gladly accept her hand in hers. They were taking baby steps for sure, but steps nonetheless. Even if it wasn’t love, they still had each other, and that was just as good. This is what they had been missing, and they had finally found each other again.
