but yes! There's already a few regressors on board, and once Stede works out that Izzy is also one of those regressors, he's got his heart set on helping out Izzy.
It takes a while, and a lot of conversations with a very cranky Izzy, but eventually he lets Stede take care of him, learns to let his guard down around him and be vulnerable and weak - Stede tells him not to call it that, because 'feeling little doesn't mean you're weak, Israel, don't be mean to yourself'.
But Ed? He can't possibly see him like this. He can let Stede bathe him and change him and read to him and put him down for naps and swap out his knives for wax crayons and feed him weird yummy mush instead of his usual stale rations, but he just can't let Ed see him act so weak and scared, especially after years of being his ironfisted first mate.
Ed had taken care of him, years ago of course, but they'd just stopped one day and that was enough for Izzy. He's too old for this anyway, he can't be the ship's first mate while also being the captain's little nap-needing mush-eating baby boy. It's embarrassing, most of all, for someone as cool and smart and strong as Blackbeard to have to watch his own first mate play with bubbles in the bath.
Every time he slips around Stede, he's completely relaxed and happy until Ed comes in. The second his captain walks into the cabin he quickly flips his drawings over, pushes his crayons off the table, pulls himself to sit up properly instead of flopping and sliding all over the chair.
Ed, of course, notices every time.
Stede had told him when he first thought Izzy might regress, and he'd confirmed it, that they'd used to do that together all those years ago until Izzy had just stopped one day. Stede keeps him updated, because why wouldn't he tell his husband everything?
He wants to look after Izzy, desperately. Stede had described him as being so young, when he'd only felt like a little kid when he'd regressed around Ed all those years ago, told him in detail how cute he was when he was trying to speak around his knuckles in his mouth or with mashed fruit spread over his face.
But every time he goes near Izzy he just goes rigid, goes right from calm and relaxed to almost petrified, gets up and runs out of the room the second Stede doesn't have a hold on him.
It hurts. a lot.
He can't possibly understand why Izzy would avoid him, because now it's not just when he's small, but also when he's big, and now he doesn't know what he's done for his first mate and best friend to avoid him like the plague.
Stede tells him to just try and talk to him, but Izzy will do almost anything to stay several metres away from Ed at all times, it's completely pointless to even try talking to him at this point.
Ed, of course, is moping around everywhere because he thinks his best friend hates him and now he's bringing the whole ship down with his sad songs and laying face down in random places across the deck, but now Izzy is affected too, unable to regress fully because he's so afraid that Ed will pop out around the next corner and see him playing with Stede's yummy bubble bath or acting out stories with his carved wooden statues, and he just can't have that.
Eventually, after Ed refuses to corner big Izzy and just talk to him and Izzy starts crying every time the door to the cabin opens, Stede takes matters into his own hands.
He tucks Izzy up into his cot in his own room, since recently Izzy's been too on edge to sleep anywhere in the cabin - in the bunk, on the chaise, even in the auxiliary wardrobe - and sends Ed down to go have a chat with him.
He knocks on the door quietly and steps inside, closing and locking the door behind him, like Stede told him to, so that Izzy can't get up and run away again.
Izzy presses up against the wall of his cot, tugging the blankets up to his chin in an attempt to hide himself from Ed.
He sits down on the edge of the cot beside Izzy, wringing his hands, and begins reciting the speech Stede had help him practice.
'I don't understand why you're avoiding me', he says, voice cracking a bit, 'But I want- I want you to know that I'm not angry at you or ashamed or anything. I'm just feeling... sad. because I don't know why you don't want to be around me. I love you so much, Iz, I don't want you to leave me. I'm sorry for what I did, I don't want you to be scared of me. You're my best friend, I don't want to lose you.' By the end of it his eyes are wet, voice wobbly, and he's practically sobbing between words.
Izzy is watching him, both nervous because Ed's with him and he's small, but also because big strong cool Ed is sitting on his bed and his crying because he thinks Izzy doesn't like him anymore.
He reaches out to hold Ed's wrist and squeezes very tight, Ed turning to look at him with red eyes and quivering bottom lip.
'Sorry.' He whispers, his own eyes growing damp now. 'Love you too.' he chokes out, voice catching on a sob as he begins to cry in earnest.
'Oh, Iz,' Ed sighs, turning around to take Izzy up in a big hug.
Izzy eventually explains what he's been worried about, and even with his limited vocabulary, Ed manages to get an understanding of what's going on.
'I'll always love you,' he says, cuddling Izzy close to his chest. 'You'll always be my favourite person, my strong first mate and my smart talented best friend. I don't care, I don't care, I just want you to be happy, let me take care of you. Like we used to.'
Izzy nods, sniffling into Ed's collar bone.
'It'll be better now,' he says, kissing Izzy's hair, 'It'll be so good. Me and Stede both love you. We both need you, we both want to look after you,' he pulls Izzy away from his chest to look him in the eye, 'Will you let us?'
Izzy takes in a deep breath, letting Ed wipe his tears and snot away, and nods.
Stede finds them a good few hours later, unlocking the door with his stolen key and watching the pair sleep, cuddled up in Izzy's cot with Izzy pressed into Ed's chest and Ed wrapped up around him.

You know, I would love it if we could see Mihawk just. Get slightly fucked up by someone, have his sword stolen and watch him figure out how to fight with some random ass sword instead
I just think. It'd be neat.
Like we kinda know how The World's Greatest Swordsman fights with his itty bitty knife, we know what kind of damage he can do with his iconic Yoru

Our Flag Means Death season 2 shot a crucial scene in the Avatar 2 tank
A behind-the-scenes look at how Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby shot their big merman moment
[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Our Flag Means Death, Season 2, Episodes 3]
Season 2 of David Jenkins’ pirate comedy-romance-drama Our Flag Means Death has finally premiered on Max, with an opening three-episode arc that’s guaranteed to get the series’ fandom buzzing. The third episode in particular ends with a sequence that feels like it was intentionally crafted to inspire the crowds of fan artists who have turned the series into an obsession. Polygon talked to the series’ VFX supervisor, David Van Dyke, about what went into shooting that sequence — and how James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water helped out.
At the end of episode 3, Ed “Blackbeard” Teach (Taika Waititi) is in limbo after being assaulted and nearly killed by his crew. There, he meets his former captain Benjamin Hornigold (another of the series’ historical pirate characters, played by Mark Mitchinson), who tries to help him through his emotional crisis over being abandoned by Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). Except Hornigold mostly helps by pointing out Blackbeard’s failings, then tying a stone to his waist and throwing him off a cliff into the sea — where he sees a vision of Stede as a fish-tailed merman, coming to save him.
“Just so you know, Rhys and Taika did very well underwater,” Van Dyke told Polygon about shooting the scene. “Rhys is not an Olympic synchronized swimmer, but he’s a strong swimmer. They were both very comfortable underwater. They both did a really good job of being mermen.”
Van Dyke says he was originally asked whether he could do the scene with CG versions of the two men, for safety reasons. He explained that it was possible, “but that’ll cost millions and millions of dollars, and we don’t really have that.”
Instead, he ended up shooting the scene practically. Season 1 of Our Flag Means Death was shot on a soundstage in Los Angeles, but for season 2, production moved to New Zealand. That gave Van Dyke a lot of advantages in terms of shooting natural backdrops to use on the production’s giant virtual environment screen, and in using experienced crews from past special-effects-heavy productions, from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies to James Cameron’s Avatar movies.
“There were definitely a few pieces that were serendipitously to our advantage,” Van Dyke says. “New Zealand was where they shot a lot of Avatar stuff, and there just so happens to be an enormous tank on the lot. There are a bunch of Avatar crew who are SCUBA certified, because they’ve been shooting in that tank forever. This was not something we had to figure out — we didn’t have to send a bunch of grips and lighting technicians off to SCUBA school. So they were there, they had really amazing underwater photography teams, and obviously a really good stunt team that was able to train up Taika and Rhys to make sure the scene was working.”
Van Dyke points to New Zealand’s thriving mermaid freediving community as a boon when it came to designing Darby’s merman outfit. “There are a lot of incredible mer-tails out there,” he said. “We were able to take those, and [costume designer Gypsy Taylor] and her team brought them together to make these beautiful physical pieces, so Rhys was able to actually sell it and do the performance underwater.”
For Van Dyke, the sequence really started with the cliff-jump sequence, which actually used considerably more CG than the underwater shots. “That cliff sequence was a great culmination of effects, merging physical photography and our LED wall, because you can’t really put those two guys on a thousand-foot cliff,” he said. “The insurance alone would be out of control. Also, we’re not really in the business of having people fall to their deaths.”
The cliff sequence began with sequences shot off New Zealand’s Bethells Beach, using drones to capture images looking inward from the ocean and photogrammetry of a specific ledge for production designer Ra Vincent and the art department to reproduce in the studio.
“The wide shots use production plates of those cliffs, and the tighter shots use photography we shot specifically to build out the stitching of the cliff sequence,” Van Dyke said. “Hornigold and Blackbeard are standing on a cliff set. We tied in drone plates of the actual cliffs so we can see the ocean and really set up how terrifying [the drop would be]. Then he falls into the ocean, falls into our tank.”
Once Waititi was in the tank, the next step was the shot where the stone tied to a rope around his waist pulls him deep underwater. That part of the scene required more conventional, practical production trickery than the rest of the sequence.
“The tank is massive, but it’s not 300 feet deep. It’s pretty darn big, but it’s never big enough, as they say,” Van Dyke says. “So when Taika is being tugged by the rock, we actually shot that sideways. By turning the camera sideways, you get more length to the shot. The problem is the bubbles — they should be streaming off him and then rising to the surface, but if you’re going sideways, they’re going to come off him and then go up, perpendicular to him. So we took over with CG to make sure our bubbles were traveling toward where the surface was supposed to be.”
The CG in the underwater sequence was mostly used to hide the lighting and rigging necessary to shoot it, Van Dyke says. “Anytime you’re shooting anything underwater, there’s gonna be a lot of gear. There’s no way you can get around that. So we’re making sure we have [convincing deep-sea] lighting and the bubbles. And then there’s his performance — that’s a real performance.”
For Van Dyke, the real complication was the costuming and makeup for both Darby and Waititi. “Taika’s wig — I was amazed that thing stayed on so long. It’s a long shoot. He was shooting all day, all weekend. But things stayed on. It’s a heavy weight. And Rhys is really working underwater, so his tail has to be working, so it all feels seamless.”
The shot in the underwater sequence that seems most likely to be a CG creation has both men just floating deep in the sea, facing each other above a seemingly endless abyss. Again, Van Dyke says, he used very little CG for that shot, and it was mostly to hide the tank walls.
“In that case, we were not shooting sideways,” he said. “It’s essentially a locked shot. It was about getting them at the right depth underwater, and making sure the shafts of light above them were working properly. We don’t have to track as much, we don’t have all these moving elements, we don’t have to worry about where the bubbles are going. That one was really just about cleaning up the tank, doctoring out the sides of the shot, where we can see the water receding into blackness, then giving the base of the tank true depth, so it really feels like they’re suspended a hundred feet below the surface.
“Obviously, a fair amount of CGI and visual effects had to go into it. But at the same time, it was a moment where we really needed to let the story take over, and have the visual effects just get out of the way, man.”

This man! He is my comfort character! ❤️ I think he would just be the sweetest Cg in the world!
Though he is a rule and regulation kind of guy, he is very chill when it comes to being your Cg.
He makes you little gifts, like the wooden shark. He had made you a set of horses, and a wooden sword.
Whenever there is a bad storm he holds you close and will sing to you till you fall asleep.
When Edward went a little nuts, he hid you in the walls of the ship and kept you safe and hidden.
When you are bored he lets you paint his leg and draw “tattoos” on his arms. (Has had his favorite drawing actually tattooed.
has let you do his makeup, or design a ‘look’ for Wee john to recreate.
Like to take you on adventures when you are on shore leave.
Isn’t the best at reading but will do his best to read Stedes book or he will make up stories to tell you.
Has let you put bows and braid his hair once it's long enough.
Is very over protective of you especially after everything that happened with Blackbeard.
When there is no one around he wraps his jacket around you and lets you wear his cravat.
He is very gentle! He’s more than willing to kill someone for you.
He likes to do your hair in the mornings, so that’s it’s out of the way while working.
Even though you're small he makes sure you know how to use a sword, just in case something were to happen.
Likes to create little tasks for you to do, to help around the ship.

Caregiver!Stede Bonnet x Little!Reader Headcanons
He is absolutely the type of cg to make everything as fun as possible. You want to play hide and seek? He’s creating an elaborate story to go alongside it with mermaids and pirate treasure. You ask him to do a craft? You better believe he’s sent one of the crew to shore to fetch clay and paints.
Speaking of crafts, he’ll literally display or wear anything and everything you make him while regressed. In fact, he urges you to seek out any creativity you do or don’t have! Once you wanted to make him an outfit, so you stole away to his secret closet (one of your favourite places on the whole ship) and splattered crimson paint all over one of his white, frilly shirts. When you brought it to him with a proud look on your face, he gasped and picked you up, twirling both you and the shirt around. I love it! You are so talented, little one. He wore the shirt every day for the next week, even when you weren’t regressed.
Because he comes from a very humble background (total sarcasm applicable here), Stede has mastered the art of comfort, as he likes to call it with a grand gesture. (Not to be confused with the… other art, he once said.) You can bet you’ll never be uncomfortable when you’re around him, physically or emotionally. Squirmy baby that just can’t sleep? Well, of course Stede has an answer for that. He’ll take you by the hand and lead you to his closet, letting you pick any item of clothing that has the most comfortable texture for little you. He’ll offer you hot tea or warm milk, and he loves nothing more than bringing a cup to your lips and helping you drink while you rest your head against his chest.
Stede is also a huge fan of bedtime stories. Apart from his tales to the crew, he loves adding a dramatic bit of theatre to your bedtime routine. He tailors his stories exactly to your mood, softening his voice and letting the sound of water hitting the hull of the ship lull you to sleep, or entertaining you with an hour long epic about the adventures of Blackbeard.
Oh, he’s so incredibly in tune with your emotional needs. He rarely falters in his ability to understand what you need, and he’s able to immediately tell how old you’re feeling just by being in your presence. Feeling smaller today, darling? That’s quite alright. I’ll be right here with you.
He frequently encourages you to play with the other crew members when you’re little as well. He’ll spot you watching Frenchie play music and will take you by the hand to sit with the other, smiling proudly when you let go and clap along to Frenchie’s music happily.
Playtime is always the best time with Stede, although sometimes he can get carried away. Once during hide and seek he jumped out and startled you so bad you burst into tears on the spot. He’s very quick to apologize and soothe your ailments, wiping your tears from your cheeks and promising you a treat from below deck.
Stede will always make sure you’re a happy baby, and if not, he’s always at his best when comforting and understanding your little side.

Ooh!! Gosh ones that have been itching at my mind have been;
- Stede keeps every single thing a tiny one has made for him! He has a whole drawer of drawings from Ed, Frenchie and Lucius (I HC those three being the most artsy tinys♡)
- Tiny Jim almost solely speaks in spanish, it's their first language so it's their automatic when babbling♡
- Lucius is a flip! He's not necessarily a carer but he's a big sib or babysitter to the others ;u;
- Ed is v nervous about being tiny off the ship (he's still blackbeard after all) and Stede helps Ed feel more comfortable, so when they're at a port, Stede likes to find a calm and secluded area where Ed can be tiny and explore the area with that small ones curiosities ♡♡
- Swede sings the best lullabies lbr
- While pillaging a ship, sometimes Stede will pick up things he thinks his tiny ones would enjoy
- When on shore, you absolutely know many mud pies are made and judged by Roach (who pretends to taste each one lol)

Sorting Things Out

Slowly, Stede is trying to get better at being around others when he’s like this. It’s easier on small days, where he can ease himself into a group rather than feel like the odd one out.
That’s what he’s trying now. Many of the others have gathered in a circle, each with a plushie in hand, with plans to play some sort of game with them all. Stede has seen the elaborate stories they create, deeply engaged in their games of pretend. He thinks he’d quite like joining in on that sort of thing.

Ed being used to being Stede's baby and Izzy's big brother but not both at the same time. When Izzy begins to regress around Stede, Ed just doesn't know how to handle it.
He's been Izzy's big brother for a long time, looked after him alone and with Stede for a while now, but it feels almost wrong to be small with Izzy while Stede is there. He just always feels selfish for making Stede care for them both on his own, because that's not fair, him and Iz can be hard work for just one person, and he loves Stede so much, he doesn't want Stede to feel bad or tired because of him!
Eventually Stede does pick up on how Ed seems to slip halfway when Izzy is small - not quite an adult but refusing to join in any games, change into comfy clothes, being careful to correct himself whenever he accidentally lisps on a word. After Izzy's put down to bed, he and Ed have a talk and discuss all the big scary feelings that make Ed feel like he can't be small when he needs to be.
Stede is very kind and pulls Ed up into his lap, smoothing over his wild hair. He explains that it isn't Ed's job to look after Izzy, especially not when Stede's around, and Stede is a big boy that can take care of other people and make his own choices, that he wants to take care of Ed and wants him to be calm and safe and happy, that Ed is also always his baby and should always feel safe to be small and tiny around him

Baby Izzy in oversized clothes cause he's just a lil guy. He also sleeps with Ed's jacket sometimes as a type of security blankie.

You know here I was thinking to myself Crocodile would have no fucking way in a million years to get Pluton, because to get Pluton Momonosuke would have to order Zunesha to open Wano, and Momo would never just let Crocodile have the weapon, plus there's no way Crocodile could actually find out Pluton is in Wano
But actually
Some people have been wondering if the person Caribou is working for is actually Crocodile. Since last we saw Caribou, he mentioned he needed to let "that person" know about Pluton's location
Like I still feel a bit doubtful the person Caribou is talking about is Crocodile?? Like I'm not sure Croc would employ such a nasty bastard?? But also all Crocodile does give a shit about is whether or not the guy gets the job done so??? (But also not only does Caribou ALSO have a Logia DF but also a Quite Moist One at that, and IDK I feel like that could be a disadvantageous "underling" for Crocodile to have considdering the moisture is like His One Weakness?? IDK)
But the only other person (as far as known-characters go) I could see Caribou having ties with is Blackbeard but IDK if BB would be interested in getting Pluton in his hands? Though god knows BB is a wild card, who the fuck knows what his next move is. (I don't really think BB cares about getting One Piece either, like all we really know is that he wants Fullalead to become a part of the World Government as a proper country)
But one of his ships has just arrived at Egghead, which means if Caribou was allied with Blackbeard, this would give Caribou a very quick and easy way to report back to his boss?
But the other thing is; Buggy wants to get One Piece. Buggy might actually be aware of how they need the Road Poneglyphs to find it. Even if he doesn't have them yet, with Big Mom gone they could probably get the one from Whole Cake Island pretty easily right now
But more importantly
Because Buggy was on Roger's ship
Buggy knows the Minks and he knew Oden
Buggy unironically actually has the connections to access the Poneglyphs from Zou and Wano
And god fucking knows, if Buggy is dragging Mihawk and Crocodile to Wano anyways, and if Crocodile found out about Pluton being there--

My only Side Note to this idea is that, if either Blackbeard or Cross Guild is going to head to Wano to get Pluton (or hell, why not both, Buggy could head there just for the Poneglyph and they could just run into Blackbeard wrecking havoc trying to get it for himself and CG could just find out that way), regardless it would result in either
A) Someone actually obtaining Pluton
B) The Strawhats finding out about someone going after Pluton and heading back to Wano to stop it (god knows Luffy and Robin wouldn't want neither BB or Croc to have it)
But considdering the Strawhats JUST LEFT WANO I can't imagine them going IMMIDIATELY BACK either

Prince of Lan Ling’s Interlude: The Romance of Edward Teach
So, we open up Lan Ling’s interlude from the POV of someone following and recording him, observing how Lan Ling goes about his day. The first node is a 1v1 of Lan Ling and Yagyu dueling in the simulator, no other party members or Mystic Code abilities.
After training, Lan Ling goes to the library, where he’s a regular. While getting him a book, Murasaki falls. Lan Ling manages a perfect catch, doing so with the least amount of indecent physical touching as possible, so as to respect her boundaries. Hearts start to go doki doki. Shoujo sparkles included.
God I wish that was me (either character). After a chat with Jason and Paris, then a duel with Penthelisea where the pair bond over wearing masks, Lan Ling confronts his stalker. It was Blackbeard all along! He was totally not jealous of Lan Ling’s good looks and spirit and was trying to find the secret rotten core inside of him that must exist. Blackbeards findings were, “He’s handsome both inside and out!”
Blackbeard goes on for a bit about how Lan Ling catching Murasaki awoke something inside of him...
The pair decide to settle this with a fight. Blackbeard’s a pirate though and brought back-up. Unfortunately for him, that back-up was a certain strategist...
Blackbeard and Chen Gong have unlimited guts stacks, so you need to wait while Chen Gond counts down. 3, 2, 1... Then he fires Blackbeard at you, regardless of his NP charge. If you survive, the battle ends. Reeling from betrayal and defeat, Blackbeard slips and falls. Luckily, Lan Ling is there to catch him.
Blackbeard finally gets the dream come true, an event CG with a beautiful man. We get calming, romantic music playing during the scene, Blackbeard is happy and Lan Ling is confused. After everything is done, Lan Ling heads back with you to your room, comments how he’s exhausted but had a great time with the chaotic events of the day. The PC and him then exchange “war stories” about all the chaotic people in your lives, and the interlude ends.
And in all I enjoyed this interlude immensely. It was a great example of the natural charisma of Lan Ling and how others feel around him. If you want to see his flaws, you won’t get them here, but sometimes you just need to see someone’s good side. The interlude also somehow managed to pull off a gay scenario that worked by playing it totally straight and sincerely. Like, it’s still a gay joke, but it works. And they did it with Blackbeard of all people, kudos.

Watched the first two episodes of Our Flag Means Death. Liveblog underneath. 8D
I LOVE THIS? SO MUCH?? Went in this knowing nothing aside from ‘fancy dude and pirate dude’ so just the entire intro was just a DELIGHT.
Stede wants them to talk to each other if they think something is wrong! This absolutely wasn’t the tone I was expecting, aaaah.
THEY ABSOLUTELY RAIDED THAT SHIP VERY WELL. VERY PIRATEY.
