byler and the beauty/power of patterns
byler vs most likely endgame ships
unlike all other platonic relationships, byler is the only stranger things friendship that has similarities and parallels with pre-established couples, as well as being constantly associated with romantic tropes. the way duffers handle byler is very similar to the way they handle canonical couples such as l*max, j*ncy and j*pper. the pattern is the same. mike and will have all the “requirements”.
there is no other platonic pair in stranger things like this one. you can compare with any other friendship; byler is exclusive.
1. l*max

2. j*ncy

3. r*ckie

4. j*pper

5. multiple ships

byler vs byler
byler also parallel their own pivotal moments and dynamics. will and mike have one of the most emotional, dramatic and profound “friendships” on stranger things. their scenes hold so much power, tension and tenderness.
yes, they still could be just friends if it wasn’t for the previous similiarities with canon couples and for the different ways the duffers build up romantic and platonic relationships on their show.
mike doesn’t look at lucas and dustin like that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*you can tell how much effort the duffers put into their scenes. beauty, intimacy and love. these three are personally my favorites.
Tumblr media
byler vs m*leven
byler and m*leven also have some parallels. the difference, however, is that most of the time, these parallels convey a message in opposite ways, as if the scenes in question were comparing one another.
the tone and text of these two relationship scenes changes completely depending on what is expected of that scene, such as m*leven’s funny and colorful breakup and byler’s dark and sad fight.
*same look in his eyes btw (picture below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*will was in every m*leven’s happy scene in season 4
Tumblr media
some of the friendships that can be compared to byler are both steve x robin and max x dustin. at some point, steve and dustin liked robin and max. but you know they’re just friends and their love is mutually platonic.
the major difference is that will is in love with mike. his feelings have been cultivated for many years. it’s pure genuine love. and honestly, there are no signs that his feelings are one-sided. mike seems to have sparks in his heart and their scenes were purposely constructed to be romantic.

The past few months I've been so lost without you. I'm just so different from other people and when you're different, sometimes you feel like a mistake..
Tumblr media
but you make me feel like I'm not a mistake at all
Tumblr media
like I'm better for being different
Tumblr media
and that gives me the courage to fight on
Tumblr media
If I was mean to you
Tumblr media
Or if it seemed like I was pushing you away
Tumblr media
it's because I'm scared of losing you
Tumblr media
Just like you're scared of losing me
Tumblr media
And if I was going to lose you, I think I would just rather get it over with quick, like ripping off a bandaid
Tumblr media
so yeah, I need you and I always Will

so the van scene was essentially
will: eI is gonna be okay.
mike: yeah, im actually not worried about that at all right now, im literally thinking about all the reasons we just don't work.
will: i am the most selfless person alive so im just going to try to reassure you using my feelings but replacing my name with hers, maybe that'll make you feel better and i can get my feelings off my chest even though it's killing me inside.
mike: wow your words made me feel more loved than i have in my entire life, if those are her feelings then i guess maybe it is love, despite the fact that nothing you described makes any sense in relation to her feelings because you clearly aren't talking about her but im oblivious and an idiot so im not gonna pick up on that fact.

"Millie didn't feed into their Byler delusions and that is why they're mad at her right now" um no people are upset with her because she said a canonically gay character was just confused and that his sexuality didn't matter and implied that he feels platonic love towards the boy he was confirmed to be in love with. That is why people are upset. She invalidated Will's canon sexuality and gave homophobes and Milevens the fuel they've been wanting to continue to justify their weird hatred for Will and erase his sexuality and make fun of LGBT fans who just want representation.
Whether she realizes it or not, she was erasing Will's canon sexuality and feelings towards Mike with that answer. And queer erasure is a big issue. Also, Millie didn't know her own character's age and said Brenner and El's relationship wasn't abusive and that Brenner is her real father figure so maybe we shouldn't be listening to what she says about Will. She doesn't even seem to know what's going on with El let alone a character she doesn't even play. The people we should listen to when it comes to Will are Noah and the Duffers. That is it.
I love Millie to death. I know she is a very kind and loving person and she probably didn't think that answer through before she gave it and she probably meant well, but what she said was harmful and insensitive and invalidating and it hurt a lot of LGBT fans. And it is okay to acknowledge she said something that wasn't all that great and hold her accountable. No one is trying to cancel her or anything. I promise. We all love Millie. But we are just hurt by what she said.

I need Byler to be canon in Season 5 so Finn Wolfhard beats the bad actor allegations and people finally understand what’s going on with his character

Screenwriting: How Do Internal Monologues Factor In?
first and foremost, i am 18 and am not an expert AT ALL when it comes to screenwriting. i LOVE screenwriting, i’m passionate about it, and part of my education over the years even now that i’m in university has been spent learning about it. that’s what i’m basing this analysis on, as well as my experiences with the stranger things scripts overall. just wanted to preface!
there’s been LOTS of discussion now that the dear billy script is out (😊💓 i’m so happy you guys are happy) about how we are shown SO MUCH of will’s perspective and that the audiences perception of mike and el’s relationship when will is in frame vs when he is not are completely different. a lot of this has to do with will’s internal monologue being EXPLICITLY SHOWN, unlike mike’s or el’s.
going through the old scripts, especially the season 3 ones since we have access to all of them, there are no other scenes with ANY of the characters that describe this level of an internal monologue within scene directions. this has been discussed, so you may be wondering why i’m bringing it up again? the reason is that it reminded me of when i took a writing course last year and we focused on screenwriting. one of the most important things i learned in that class was that stage directions are NOT TYPICALLY SUPPOSED TO SHOW A CHARACTER’S INTERNAL MONOLOGUE.
take this comparison for instance. this is just one of many, i could use any scene between characters (joyce and hopper, steve and robin, dustin and steve, etc) to show that the stage directions in these scripts show ACTIONS, not EMOTIONS. take a scene that has a lot of emotional significance for the show, el dumping mike. none of the directions point to either mike or el’s emotions. they just show their actions. because that’s what a screenplay is meant to do.
Tumblr media
i was actually surprised by this, so i asked my teacher how that plays into actors creating their characters. he said that the job of a screenplay is mainly direction and tone, and that it is the job of directors and actors themselves to work together in understanding their character arcs. it is not typically the job of the screenplay.
the only character where this screenwriting “rule” differs in stranger things is with WILL. it’s been spread everywhere by now, but the scene between mike and will directly shows his internal monologue:
Tumblr media
reflecting on this now, it makes it even more significant that WILL is shown to have this level of an internal monologue and that all of these scenes between mike and el’s are shown through his perspective. it goes so far beyond perspective—the show runners are actively placing will in the main character role here, making us sympathize with him, making us feel his pain, AND MAKING US ROOT FOR HIM!! and it totally seems to have been effective. how many people have started to open their eyes to wills love for mike and the romantic implications between them since season 4 dropped?? it is feeling like that because that is what the writers WANTED. will has become the main character in this triangle between mike/el/will.
with all of this in mind, it is palpable that our theory about the duffer’s direction with mike is true—that they are telling finn wolfhard mike’s inner thoughts, and he is portraying mike based on that. they have to give their actors something to work with. as of right now, will is the main character and mike is the person whose head we don’t see into.
one more important note to mention with regards to actors being told the arcs of their characters—all of this reminds me of what david harbour has said over the years about hopper: that he asked the duffers to not only give him hopper’s internal monologue for the season they were currently filming, but also the ENTIRE arc for hopper, so he could play him accordingly. they agreed and he said the following about it:

I mean I already KNEW that Will Byers was head over heels, completely, stupidly in love with Mike Wheeler. I KNEW it wasn't a dumb little crush. And even still...that script surpassed even my expectations.
His eyes were glistening? His heart was beating out of his chest? His happiness palpable? HIS MOUTH DRY AS A CALIFORNIA SUMMER!?!?!? And all this over just a bit of undivided attention from Mike? Yeah, my boy Will has it BAD.
