I know this is gonna be an unpopular opinion but I actually liked that they made Carnage (the symbiote) a separate character to Cletus Kasady in Venom 2, because something that's always kinda bugged me about Carnage as a whole is that fact that it feels like the symbiote itself has absolutely no personality of its own. It just feels like Cletus was given eldritch superpowers since he's the one who calls the shots, and as far as I'm aware, we never see or hear anything from the symbiote itself (please correct me if I'm wrong tho). It's like Carnage isn't even its own person, its just... Cletus, but he gets to be even more murder happy than he already was.

And while I've heard people explain it away as "oh they're just so in sync you can't even tell that Carnage is two different people", that explanation... honestly feels like an excuse not to flesh out a separate character. Like seriously, what is the Carnage symbiote thinking or feeling while Cletus uses it to do whatever the fuck he wants? Does it like the violence or does it hate being used to kill against its will? Is it okay going along with whatever Cletus wants or does it resent him for never allowing it any semblance of control? I can't help but feel like the lack of characterization of the symbiote itself is a massive amount of wasted potential.

You could have an arc about the symbiote growing to hate Cletus for robbing it of autonomy, and potentially even breaking free to find a host that won't hold it back.

You could have a bit of a reversal on the way Venom was introduced, where Carnage at first seems to be non-sentient, only for the story to slowly reveal that it is trapped by the whims of its host over time.

Hell, you could even do an arc similar to the movie where Carnage genuinely was born evil, but its goals ended up clashing with Cletus, causing them to turn on eachother!

And it's not just Carnage either, there's a good number of symbiotes who aren't actually given any characterization outside of being an extension of their host, and the fact that this is so fucking prevalent just... really bugs me.

Okay but have we considered dark, co-dependent Dreamling yet?

Hob, who has seen the best but also the very worst of humanity again and again, and for whom something just snaps when he finds Dream in Burgess' basement. Dream, who has always had an ambivalent relationship with humanity and who, with a bit of a nudge in the opposite direction than canon, might be pushed to bitter caution. Both of them starting off just a little bit unhinged about the other's safety post-Burgess, and having no one around them, really, to stop them from becoming worse.

Dream who sends nightmares to people who so much as mildly annoy Hob, and eventually sends nightmares to keep an eye on Hob, full stop. Hob, who's actually quite touched, what do you mean it might be a bit unhealthy? Who starts out by making sure people in the New Inn or around him know to keep their distance from Dream, who's quite willing to pick a fight (and hide a body) of anyone who looks at Dream the wrong way. Who grows on the inhabitants of the Dreaming so much that eventually, they are quite happy to listen to him, too, when he tells them to protect their boss even when it doesn't seem necessary. Even when said boss doesn't ask them to.

Just, Dream and Hob who become increasingly protective of each other, who become increasingly willing to do anything to keep each other safe, and if that means burning the whole world down? Well, then let it burn. Who go on a downward spiral so slow, by the point anyone really notices it's way too late to disentangle them from each other, and their ruthless devotion to no one but themselves. Dreamling who are ready to kill and abuse their power for each other, and as such are balancing each other so much that it is almost impossible to stop them without killing them both.

Just, Dreamling as 'us against everyone else.' They sure both are obsessive enough for this; all it really needs is the realisation that the other is just as bad.

thinking about iterators ( again )

i have so many thoughts about iterators every day it's actually insane . i'm going to be dumping today's thoughts here

do you think the iterators do anything other than iterate ? i feel like some of them , after being abandoned by the ancients , would have hobbies of some sort . it seems hard to have hobbies when you're a stationary supercomputer megastructure though

does rain world technology work similarly to ours ? could an iterator string data together in specific ways to create things ? could they draw like that ? could they make music like that ? could iterators be capable of art , and would they be able to share it ?

they're able to create purposed organisms , and we know of at least one iterator who doesn't take their intended job very seriously ( nsh ) , so iterators coming together to make art is not too farfetched . it'd shouldn't be hard for them to compose songs , write literature , make drawings , etc. and it's kind of beautiful in a way

if they could draw , do you think they'd make pixel art ? art with equations like pieces made using desmos graphing calculator ? vector graphics ? it doesn't seem likely that they'd draw like we do , unless they somehow manage to code up an art program for themselves ( if that's even possible )

here comes the self indulgent bit . and the original thought that sprouted this train of thinking . if they could make music , do you think it'd be chiptune-esque ? 8-bit ? maybe something like gameboy music . maybe something like chipzel , danimal cannon , zef , fearofdark ... theoretically they should be able to produce any kind of music they want , but i wanna lean towards this just because

if you can't tell i'm listening to that kind of music right now . specifically this cover of rolling down the street in my katamari . i don't know the proper terminology for this kind of stuff , but seeing the waves on the side ... watching the notes flow on the midi display thing ... it's so mesmerizing . i can't help but think iterators would make stuff like this if they could
