“On 19 March 2020, DHSC issued guidance to discharge people, regardless of testing status, into social care settings without ensuring that the necessary PPE, infection prevention control and clinical support was in place to keep everyone safe. Among the devastating revelations was confirmation that PPE paid for by social care providers was requisitioned by the NHS. The inquiry has laid bare that there was no ring of protection around care homes – instead decisions seemingly taken in abstraction of the reality of social care or available evidence were implemented with unforgettable consequences.”

Almost surprised it's taken them this long to ramp these policies back up, tbqh.

Much too little of a reckoning, and far too late. So, now they are evidently trying to pull basically the same shit again--under the very possibly too-correct assumption that nobody else has many fucks to give over what happens to elderly and disabled people.

The care home I work at puts wartime propaganda posters on the walls of its dementia community. I'm in two minds about this. On one hand, it's a very real chunk of their lives, and there's something to be said about the comfort of familiarity, and they do seem to like reminiscing about rationing and stuff, they benefit from doing it. On the other hand, what the hell?

There is proof-positive that music reaches into more areas of the brain than language, math, and other forms of communication. I've seen miraculous things happen to people who are considered to be "disconnected"--suddenly, they're singing, clapping, toe-tapping, dancing...all from singing these familiar tunes. Staff members at these homes tell me the music helps the residents to eat and sleep better. Recovery I see takes anywhere from weeks to mere minutes.  Some of the folks I entertain are deep in "memory care." Others had strokes or other set-backs. Some are as young as 40-something. Others are well into their 90s and beyond (including World War II veterans). I've played many homes around the San Francisco Bay Area and Oregon. Residents requested these songs, and I recorded them for their enjoyment when I’m not around.**IMPORTANT: I am seeking financial support to keep doing the care home work (I collect a fee, but it doesn't cover all my expenses for travel and gear).
