The Voyage of Charles Darwin (Die Reise des Charles Darwin)
youtube
In 1978, a BBC TV series about Charles Darwin's voyage on the HMS Beagle was shown on German television. On December 27th of 1831, the HMS Beagle left the port of Plymouth, England. The small brig was supposed to survey the coasts of South America and return to England via Australia and Africa.
Originally intended to last four years, the journey ultimately lasted almost five years. Also on board was the young theologian and amateur naturalist – 22-year-old Charles Darwin. He actually wanted to use the trip to get to know and describe the diversity of divine creation. However, the insights he gained on the trip were the basis for his theory of evolution - a theory that shook the common world view of the time.
At the beginning of this year I was finally able to realize the plan to travel to Patagonia in Darwin's footsteps. It was a goosebumps moment when we climbed a hill and looked out over Wulaia Bay - the bay where Captain Fitzroy had his first encounter with local Indians (the resulting story is well known). Almost 200 years ago, the HMS Beagle may have also anchored where our expedition ship anchored. Patagonia remained a relatively untouched piece of earth. Its roughness has preserved it - and gives it its charm.

„With such moderate abilities as I possess, it is truly surprising that I should have influenced to such an extent what men believe. Indeed, I was considered by my masters and by my father as a very ordinary boy - rather below the common standard in intellect. As for the voyage with the Beagle, it was by far the most important event in my life - it determined my whole career.“

Having so much fun fucking with this tournament bracket lmfao. Elijah Fry vs Relia Faire is incredible. So is Morgan Faire vs Mr. Ivory.
Jamison Black vs Admiral Ashford has me in stitches.
(In canon, Ashford adopted Lizzie. He's like Brian Blessed. But in a suit.)

On the MSATD News
I didn't have time to post a knee-jerk reaction (which those of you from the Downton days know I was apt to do - thank you to all my long term mutuals of my side blog for sticking with me through those days), as I saw the news as I was getting ready to head out for work and it's been… a bit of a day.
Suffice it to say… I am devastated. And my initial reaction was (well after cursing), that it should have ended with S4, but with a different (happier) conclusion. It's called Miss Scarlet AND THE DUKE for a reason. And after all that happened in S4… it really feels like… what was it all for?? Especially if they knew WHEN FILMING THIS?? "Goodbye for now" is NOT "goodbye forever." They really, really really fumbled this.
There's a lot of theories going around, and I will admit it's too hard for me to listen to Stuart's new interview, but going off what other's have said and the parts of the transcript I did manage to read… I just cannot feel like this was actually his decision unless there's something else going on with him (either in his personal life or maybe he has some secret role he's got, because supposedly he hasn't worked since he did ADR on S4). He's been the captain of the ship, and he has always been enthusiastic with discussing the show and had just great insight into playing William. It doesn't feel like he himself was ready to move onto other things (and that's not even how it's worded - some BS about how the show needed it him to be gone for ~longevity~ of the show), like I've seen with other actors are on shows (e.g. Dan Stevens). He still promoted S3 (which came out in the UK after they filmed S4), he still even promoted S4! He was an executive producer for S4!!! Nothing makes sense!
So if it's due to RN… why keep having the other characters say William was only going to be gone a year? Why bother to have the flashback? why bother to have him stay at at Eliza's to recover?? hell I'm surprised they just didn't keep in the coma then--
But really, why even bother to have Eliza write to him? Or have Ivy say what she said to her?? The time apart was supposed to be them looking at their options. They literally foreshadowed him joining Eliza at her agency upon his return. So… what happened?
If it was actually for personal reasons that Stuart left, he has a right to his privacy. But then they should have rewritten S4 to be the end then, since they knew all this time. I can't believe we are getting the full story on this, one way or the other. The more and more I think about it... I do think it was RN's doing though.
Just two nights ago I drafted up a whole meta extolling how one of the best things this show has done has been how they developed William and how he grew as a character. The progression he made as he not only accepted Eliza having a career but encouraging her. His mentorship of Fitzroy. How he came from nothing, from a teenager living on the streets, to become an inspector at Scotland Yard. But they have chosen to toss that all out the window.
Who knows, maybe S5 ends with Eliza deciding to go to New York. But it doesn't seem like they are handling this like Babington's absence in Sanditon. They will make Eliza quickly fall for someone else, and slap fans in the face who have been following their friends to lovers slow burn for five years (because we had to wait for S2 in the first place thanks to the pandemic). And what sucks is that we still got promo saying they are in love with each other. From Stuart, from Kate, from Rachael New herself. We have still gotten promo promoting the romance. Why not have them have a big fight then or something, idk. They gave us hope. And you know what Fellowes says about false hope.
So I'm just supposed to believe that William gives up on Eliza and doesn't return…? No, I cannot. As much as we hated the deaths on DA when they wrote out actors, at least those characters still died in love with their spouses. And while I'd still be foaming at the mouth in anger if they killed him off… yeah.
William's last lines of the show is a flashback including him saying "is it all worth it?" And the answer is… no it's not.

Sort of related to my last post, but here's a list of all the explicitly/canonically aspec characters in media I can think of who have fulfilling relationships (romantic, platonic, familial, etc) and lives with or without sex being a part of it. Media does a lot to push the idea that asexuality is a flaw, so it's always nice to see positive aspec representation.
Books:
Ekundayo Kunleo (Raybearer) - Major side character, Asexual
Fleet Captain Breq Mianaai (Imperial Radch) - POV character, Asexual
Medic (Imperial Radch) - Side character in the last two books, Asexual (implied aromantic? Don't quote me on it)
Podcasts:
Arkady Patel (The Strange Case of Starship Iris) - A main character, Grey-Ace
Sir Fitzroy Maplecourt (The Adventure Zone: Graduation) - A Player Character, word-of-god confirmed Asexual
Jonathan Sims (The Magnus Archives) - Protagonist, Asexual
Comics:
Tori Spring (Heartstopper/Solitaire) - Major side character/Protagonist, Asexual
Isaac Henderson (Heartstopper) - Side character with relevance in season two of the TV show, Aro-Ace
Uncle Jim (Cool Uncle) - Main Character, Aro-Ace
Kim (Boo! It's Sex) - A main character, Asexual
Rae (Always Human) - Side Character, Aro-Ace
TV:
Raphael Santiago (Shadowhunters) - Major side character, Asexual
Lilith Clawthorne (The Owl House) - Major side character, word-of-god confirmed Aro-Ace
Peridot (Steven Universe) - Major side character, word-of-god confirmed Aro-Ace
Feel free to add more if you can think of them!

26th Monday
Very fine: came onboard at 8 AM. Went onshore again on duty: came onboard at noon. Captains Ross & Crozier went down to Port Arthur (the penal Settlement) onboard the Albatros a nice little yacht belonging to Mr Blacket a private Gentleman.
Campbell's Notes:
Ross, Voyage, II. p. 17. ‘ I availed myself of the liberal offer of Mr. Blackett to place his yacht, the “Albatross”, at my service, to enable me to extend the magnetical observations some distance along the coast…’
McCormick, Voyages. I. p. 197. ‘ Friday, 23rd. Mr Blackett’s yacht, the Albatross, anchored in shore of us, and her owner having been a shipmate of mine in H.M.S. Tyne in bygone years, I called on board to see him, and asked him to dine with me on board the Erebus, which he did on the following Sunday.’ McCormick was invalided and took passage home from Beagle (10), Commander Robert FitzRoy, from Rio de Janeiro in Tyne (28), Captain Charles Hope, 28 April to 18 June 1832. McCormick, Voyages, II. pp. 222–3. The Tyne’s muster list (TNAADM 37/8417) shows Midshipman C. Blackett as being on board at this time,so presumably he was McCormick's shipmate.

The Father of Forecast
After Captain Pringle Stokes committed suicide on the Beagle, Lieutenant Robert Fitzroy became her captain. In February 1829, his ship was blown onto the beams by a sudden violent gust. Only great seamanship saved the day, but two sailors were swept from the rigging and drowned. Immediately before the squall, the barometric pressure had dropped sharply, and Fitzroy's traumatic experience led him to wonder whether a more systematic means of predicting bad weather could not be devised.
Tumblr media
Vice Admiral Robert Fitzroy (1805-65), by Samual Lane,c. 1837 (x)
In 1845 he proposed distributing barometers along the British coast to give early warning of storms, but nothing came of it. In 1854, the Board of Trade established a meteorological department and Fitzroy was appointed its head. In 1857, Fitzroy, who was by then an admiral, designed a simple, sturdy Fishery Barometer (which soon became known as the Fitzroy Barometer), engraved with meteorological rhymes, such as "When the rise begins after the low, we expect storms and a clear wind."
Tumblr media
An  Admiral Fitzroy Barometer by Eg Wood Of London, c. 1880 (x)
With the financial support of some philanthropists, he distributed 100 of these barometers to various maritime centres and life-saving stations. Despite his efforts, a well-preserved ship, the Royal Charter, sank in a storm off the Welsh coast in 1859, killing nearly 400 people. The tragedy led to a call for the Meteorological Department to expand its activities, not only collecting weather statistics but also using the new telegraph network to send storm warnings to coastal centres even when the storm was probably already underway. Fitzroy went further and expanded his department into a unit for making weather forecasts, a term he had coined in 1855.
By 1861, Fitzroy had established a comprehensive system for issuing weather information and storm warnings, which he coordinated from his London office. He then produced a daily weather forecast that was published in The Times - something no one had seriously attempted before. However, the forecasts inevitably attracted attention when they were wrong, and Fitzroy was publicly ridiculed and condemned in the House of Commons. In his efforts to improve the quality of his predictions, Fitzroy worked until he dropped.
Tumblr media
This is the very first public weather forecast written in FitzRoy's own hand on the Daily Weather Report for 31st July 1861. It forecast the weather for the 1st and 2nd August. On the page Fitzroy notes that he believes the forecasts might be advantageously added to the observation information already published in the newspapers and if approved of he would continue them on similar principles.(x)
When he became numb and suffered from exhaustion, depression and the fact that he had been passed over for promotions on several occasions, Admiral Fitzroy committed suicide at his home in Surrey on 30 April 1865. It was a tragic echo of the fate of the captain of HMS Beagle, whose post he had taken over. When the Finisterre maritime area was renamed in 2002 to avoid confusion with the Spanish maritime area of the same name, the Meteorological Office chose the name Fitzroy in honour of its founder.

Hey what’s your favorite historical domino effect because mine has gotta be that time the British navy promoted a mentally ill 23-year-old to command this tiny rickety little ship on a mapmaking mission in Tierra del Fuego and they were like *finger guns* haha you’re too young for this job and the previous guy killed himself about it, good luck!!
But he made it back to England in one piece and the navy was like “nice work kiddo do you wanna do that again and he was like “sure but can we hire me a scientist friend so I don’t die of stress and loneliness like the previous captain of this ridiculous fucking ship”
So they ask around but nobody wants to go because Cape Horn is TERRIFYING, so finally, scraping the bottom of the barrel, they reach out to this random 22-year-old with a degree in theology who does naturalism AS A HOBBY and against all odds this guy actually DOES want to go AND THAT’S CHARLES DARWIN AND THAT’S WHY WE KNOW ABOUT EVOLUTION BY NATURAL SELECTION

BRIAR AND WESTLIE CAN BE FRIENDS
Tell me about Westlie!
Tumblr media
Ah! They might be such interesting friends! Westlie is technically a Sunless Skies/Skyfarer character, so the stats are a little different, but her main skills are Iron and Mirrors.
She grew up as the eldest child of a Skies shipping magnate who wanted a boy, but got two girls, and raised her as heir to Fairweather Shipping and Co. She has a natural head for numbers, and if her life had been her own, probably would've become a navigator, but clerking was a decent substitute excepting her father's cruelty and ... lax... views of the law.
After some time of watching employees being treated cruelly and her furious assertions that his management was wrong, she decided to run away, frantically applied to several skyfarer captains for any sort of position, and was hired as First Mate by Captain Fitzroy of the Pyrrhus.
Her main motivators are stubborn fury at injustice, and a deep-seated belief that nobody should go without the love she did, although she's (very) emotionally stunted and can't communicate that as well as she wants.
She almost always wears a walking skirt and vest, and prefers skirts to pants: partly because Arthur wanted a boy so desperately and femininity is one subconscious way she can strike back, but mostly because she just like skirts.
(In the Liztlie AU, she's 23, and the circumstances are the same, she just stumbles into adopting a child and her protective nature +extra stuff spur her to run away.)

I want to make a longer post about OFMD Blackbeard and Captain Bligh at some point but that might require re-reading Mutiny on the Bounty (something I am frankly not going to do) so here is the short version.
Captains in the age of sail walked a fine line. They couldn't be too familiar with the crew but they couldn't be too distant and high handed. They couldn't let rule violations slide for risk of losing control but they also couldn't be too strict. They had to be willing to punish bad behavior but they couldn't be brutal. They (ideally) had to inspire the crew to endure the difficult conditions at sea and the horror of naval battles but they also couldn't be friends with the crew. Basically, a good captain was always on and always thinking. It was not easy.
I'm not saying this hierarchical structure was good. But it's definitely interesting and creates wonderful dynamics for fiction.
Captain Bligh isn't fictional. He was a British captain (and fuckhead colonizer who sailed with James Cook) whose crew mutinied and set him and the crew members loyal to him adrift in a dinghie with some food, fresh water, and a compass. He wrote a memoir about it where he tried to make himself sound reasonable and smart but probably protested too much.
Basically, Bligh lost control. His punishments were considered unfair and he made some decisions that the crew disagreed with strongly. Oops. Rowboat for you! Union strong and all that. I'm generally a fan of mutinies, myself. Anyway.
Blackbeard never loses control. His return during the mutiny against Izzy quells the rebellion immediately. Both his crew and Stede's respect him and I'd argue it's because he walks the captain line extremely well.
But, of course, that's terribly lonely, isn't it? Sometimes captains would invite a companion to sail with them so they'd have someone to talk to over dinner. This was a class thing (yuck), but it was also a function of not having anyone on board who they didn't command.* Ed has Izzy (who he does command). Which. Well.... And for a while he had Stede as a co-captain.
TLDR; Ed is extremely competent and Captain Blackbeard is very carefully maintained. But it's fucking wearing.
"You wanted to be Blackbeard. This is what it's like."
*Charles Darwin was just such a voyage companion for a captain named FitzRoy. It's part of how Darwin developed his ideas for Origin of the Species.

A Showdown for the Ages: AFL Grand Final - Collingwood Magpies vs. Brisbane Lions
Tumblr media
The Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final is the pinnacle of Australian Rules Football, a day when two of the country's top teams go head to head in a clash of skill, strategy, and determination. In this article, we delve into the anticipation, history, and excitement surrounding the blockbuster matchup between the Collingwood Magpies and the Brisbane Lions.
The Magpies' Pursuit of Glory
Collingwood is a name synonymous with AFL success. They have a rich history dating back to 1892 and are one of the most successful clubs in the league. With 16 premierships to their name, the Magpies are always considered contenders for the title. This year, they have a talented squad led by captain Scott Pendlebury and coach Nathan Buckley, both of whom have their sights set on bringing another premiership cup to the club's illustrious history.
The Rise of the Brisbane Lions
On the other side of the coin, the Brisbane Lions are a relatively new franchise in the AFL landscape, formed in 1996 through the merger of the Brisbane Bears and the Fitzroy Lions. However, despite their short history, the Lions have achieved remarkable success, winning three consecutive premierships from 2001 to 2003. This year, under the guidance of coach Chris Fagan, the Lions have made it back to the Grand Final and are eager to add another chapter to their success story.
Key Matchups
The Grand Final is not only about the teams; it's also about the individual battles that unfold on the field. This year, fans can look forward to some thrilling matchups:
Scott Pendlebury vs. Lachie Neale: Two of the league's best midfielders will go head to head in the battle for supremacy at the center. Pendlebury's class and poise against Neale's relentless ball-winning ability will be a spectacle to watch.
Taylor Adams vs. Dayne Zorko: These two midfield bullies will be pivotal in their respective teams' efforts. Adams' toughness and contested ball-winning skills will be matched against Zorko's agility and creativity.
Mason Cox vs. Harris Andrews: In the forward line, Collingwood's Mason Cox, known for his towering presence and marking ability, will face the daunting task of competing against Brisbane's Harris Andrews, one of the league's premier defenders.
Historical Significance
This Grand Final carries a unique historical significance as it represents the clash between the old and the new. Collingwood, with its long and storied history, is the epitome of tradition and excellence in the AFL, while Brisbane, a relatively young club, symbolizes the league's expansion and growth beyond its traditional heartlands.
Both teams have their own compelling narratives – Collingwood seeking to add to their illustrious trophy cabinet, and Brisbane aiming to establish themselves as a modern-day dynasty. The result of this contest will shape the AFL's history and future.
The Fan Experience
The AFL Grand Final is not just about what happens on the field; it's also a festival of football for fans. Thousands will flock to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), while millions more will watch from their homes or local pubs, making it one of Australia's most-watched sporting events.
The atmosphere at the MCG is electric, with fans decked out in team colors, face paint, and waving banners. The pre-game entertainment is always a highlight, featuring top Australian musical acts. Whether you're a die-hard supporter or a casual fan, the Grand Final is an event that brings people together to celebrate their love for the sport.
The clash between the Collingwood Magpies and the Brisbane Lions in the AFL Grand Final promises to be a memorable showdown. It's a battle of tradition and history versus modern success and growth, with both teams having a lot at stake. As the teams take to the field, the eyes of the nation will be fixed on the MCG, awaiting the crowning of this year's AFL champion. Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain – the 2023 AFL Grand Final will be a spectacle of Australian Rules Football at its finest.

The Importance of Proper Maintenance for Your Fitzroy Barometer!
If you are a weather enthusiast or simply someone who loves antique instruments, then you might have come across the Fitzroy barometer. The Fitzroy barometer is a type of aneroid barometer named after Admiral Robert Fitzroy, who was the captain of the HMS Beagle during Charles Darwin's famous voyage. This type of barometer measures atmospheric pressure, which is an essential component in predicting weather changes. However, owning a fitzroy barometer also comes with the responsibility of proper maintenance.
Tumblr media
Proper maintenance of your Fitzroy barometer is crucial if you want it to function accurately and have a long lifespan. One of the most important things you can do is to ensure that it is calibrated regularly. This involves adjusting the barometer to the correct pressure readings so that it can accurately measure the current atmospheric pressure. Calibration should be done at least once a year, preferably by a professional.
Another critical maintenance practice is to keep the barometer clean and dry. You should avoid placing it in damp areas or exposing it to moisture, as this can damage its delicate components. Additionally, dust and dirt can accumulate on the barometer's surface, which can affect its accuracy over time. Use a soft, dry cloth to clean it regularly and keep it free from dust.
Lastly, it's essential to keep your Fitzroy barometer in a stable environment. Extreme temperature changes, such as placing it near a heating vent or in direct sunlight, can cause the barometer to expand or contract, leading to inaccurate readings. Keep it away from sources of heat and direct sunlight to ensure that it remains in optimal condition. Visit www.blackswanhourglass.com to learn more!
