Where are the teenage/YA cartoons?
Tumblr media
Recently, two cartoons that were slated to be on Cartoon Network, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and My Adventures With Superman, are now going to be on Adult Swim.
To me, this move makes no sense. These shows could have diversified Cartoon Network’s very barebones lineup, but they were shoved to Adult Swim. I sorta understand Unicorn, as it is dark (but definitely not on the same level as Primal, one of Genndy Tartakovsky’s other shows), but My Adventures with Superman? That show seems pretty innocuous. It has a bright color palette and doesn’t seem similar to Harley Quinn or the later seasons of Young Justice.
This reminds me of the desperate need there is for teen/YA-oriented western cartoons. In western animation, there are three primary audiences:
Preschoolers; anything rated TV-Y, shown on PBS Kids, Nick Jr, Disney Junior, or Cartoonito. Example: Doc McStuffins.
Big kids/elementary school crowd; anything rated TV-Y7, can be seen on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Disney Channel. Example: The Amazing World of Gumball.
Adult; anything rated TV-14 or TV-MA, seen on Adult Swim, Comedy Central, or the prime time Fox lineup. Example: Rick and Morty.
That’s it. Despite what the rating of TV-14 might lead you to believe, the stuff on Animation Domination or Adult Swim isn’t targeted to teenagers, obviously.
This leaves teenagers in a weird spot when it comes to watching cartoons (western ones, that is. They definitely watch anime). They tend to stick with big kids and/or adult cartoons, like Avatar. With all of the heavy subject matter it and Korra tackle, they definitely feel more like teenage cartoons, especially since they were inspired by anime.
I bring up anime because they have clearly defined demographics, including teenagers. They have manga/anime for teenage boys, shonen (Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball Z), and teenage girls, shojo (Fruits Basket, Kamisama Kiss, Yona of the Dawn).
Shojo anime (except Sailor Moon) pretty much never air on American TV, but when shonen anime are exported here, they end up on Adult Swim’s Toonami block. For example, Demon Slayer aired on Toonami (they had to stop airing it because it got too expensive), and in America, the Mugen Train movie was rated R. This despite Demon Slayer being aimed at teenagers, and also being enjoyed by small children in Japan. They even had a Japanese Happy Meal promotion that ran alongside Pretty Cure, a show that actually is aimed at small children (kodomomuke).
With America’s teenagers flocking to anime, I believe that the American animation industry should keep up with the times and try to capitalize on the teenage demographic instead of shoehorning shows to be for elementary schoolers or adults.
Here are some western cartoons I believe could be classified as YA/teenage shows:
Avatar and Korra, as mentioned above.
Most cartoons aired on MTV, such as Daria, Beavis and Butthead, and Clone High. It helps that MTV itself was aimed at teenagers. Aeon Flux is an exception however, as it is clearly for adults. They’re often shoehorned into the category of “adult animation,” but their subject matter is more appealing to teens.
6teen. It’s right there in the title! Canada knows what’s up.
Total Drama, another Canadian cartoon. I know that they made the younger-skewing DramaRama spin-off because teenagers weren’t watching cartoons anymore, but now that the main show is coming back, it will definitely be aimed at teenagers again.
Sym Bionic Titan, yet another Tartakovsky show, pretty much is a teen/YA show, minus swearing. If I remember correctly, it aired on Toonami for a little while.
Regular Show. The most obvious example of a YA cartoon disguised as a kids cartoon.
Infinity Train. Never forget that it was cancelled because “no child entry point.”
As Told By Ginger is essentially a teen drama in animated form.
Invader Zim - Nickelodeon asked Johnson Vasquez to make a show directed towards older audiences, got exactly what they wanted (most of the viewership was from teens and adults, especially of the shops-at-Hot Topic variety) and cancelled it anyway.
Arcane is technically an adult series, but League of Legends is rated T by the ESRB, so I’m putting it in the teen/YA category (there IS a distinction between ‘young adult’ and ‘adult’)
I highly doubt that the likes of Nickelodeon will add a teenage animation block to their lineup (and TeenNick is nothing but iCarly reruns), but I hope that streaming services will start capitalizing on the YA demographic for western animation. Bee and Puppycat is a good start, featuring relatable young adult situations while technically being watchable for all ages. At least Unicorn is gonna air on ACME Night, which isn’t too late in the evening (currently, the block starts at 5:30 EST). And with Clone High and the aforementioned Total Drama making a comeback, I’m holding out hope for more YA animation.

After running my handmade mandala shop for over 4+ years, here are some popular questions I get asked:
Are these really handmade, or do you import them in from somewhere? - Yes, these are handmade by myself. Every order that comes in is handcrafted as you see in the video above.
If you don't have a style I want, can I request my own personalization? - Absolutely! I love custom requests, and can discuss with you about creating the perfect mandala. If I don't have the beads, I will go out and get it. :)
Where are you located? Do you ship to Italy? - I am in Edmonton, AB Canada, and just recently I now offer worldwide shipping, which includes Italy.
I want to try making it! Can I ask you how it's made? - Of course! No gate-keeping here. I believe the process is as soothing and enjoyable as the end product itself. I sell DIY kits with prepared pieces. All you have to do is assemble it. I also have many tutorials on my TikTok and Instagram accounts. Please feel free to ask me any questions as well.
What are some ways to use this mandala thingamajig? - Some ways I use mine, as well as how customers use theirs include: fashionable bracelet, hair bun basket, Christmas tree ornament, sensory fidget toy, unique desk decor, meditation tool, fruit holder, mantle display, air plant holder, gift idea, and more!
Shop my 3D wire mandala stims, bracelets, and Orbi Loops™ from my Etsy shop! Use this share & save link www.merakisphere.etsy.com | Use Code: TUMBLR for a special discount. :)

THT Tokens Part 1 - Vengeance Tokens
Today I’m going to be discussing the use of tokens on THT. I’ll be doing this in 2 parts - Vengeance tokens and Love tokens, so make sure you stay tuned for part 2.
Tumblr media
So what exactly is a token? Tokens are objects that are used to quickly remind the audience of significant plot lines, a short hand in some respects. Tokens are usually something precious; an object either gifted or collected. These objects embody soul, as such they carry an individuals spirit within them.
Tumblr media
A token that we’ve seen consistently throughout the seasons is June’s ear tag. It reminds us of Gilead and June’s imprisonment there. It’s been consistently present throughout the seasons but in season 5 it was conspicuously absent. Why? No Fred.
A vengeance token symbolizes a moral debt that one character owes another and most likely comes in the form of what has been taken from them. A classic example might be a memento from an innocent victim that the protagonist carries as they wreak revenge on those responsible.
Tumblr media
A vengeance token from season 5 was Fred’s ring finger…..yep, gross. Tokens will often tell you something about the nature of the relationship shared by these two individuals. Rings and ring fingers signify commitment and when June sends Serena Fred's finger, it symbolizes the absolute severing of any connection between them. Sending body parts to your enemy is meant to instill mortal fear and communicate proof of death. When Fred's finger arrived on Serena's doorstep, she understood exactly how brutal and bloody Fred’s death actually was. June had personally taken the time to tear him “limb from limb”. Serena is rightfully terrified.
Tumblr media
The severing of Fred's finger was a call back to the removal of Serena’s finger and payback for June’s broken family, a lost connection. The removal of Serena’s finger created a gulf between Fred and Serena that was never truly crossed. Her finger was referenced in shots throughout the seasons to emphasize her resentment and punctuate her grief. Given what Fred had done to Serena, I would have understood if she’d sent June a fruit basket, but no such luck.
Tumblr media
Serena’s mother fashioned her a faux finger to cover up Freds act of violence and told Serena to suck it up, go home and play the silent, dutiful wife. June simply won’t allow it, his deeds must be answered for.
Tumblr media
As Serena stands next to Nick and June under those giant angel wings in Ep 6 S3, she senses their connection. When Fred steps up to stand next to June the camera closes in on the hand with her missing finger. She’s pissed, her husbands lopping off her fingers meanwhile her husbands obsessed and Nicks travelled miles just to see June, what’s to be done? How about a nasty rant about how Nick was in the Sons of Jacob and well golly gee, didn’t June know about that?
Tumblr media
In S5 June gleefully boasts to Luke that she sent Serena Fred’s finger, a proud admission of her act of revenge. His response is extremely telling, he is horrified, not only that but he is angry. “You are obsessed with her……How does that help our family?” he asks. He knows that this is payment for their broken family.
Tumblr media
In season 1 we saw Luke reluctantly trade his ring to the boatman for safe passage into Canada. In myth “The Boatman” is a figure that transports one across the river Styx between the land of the living and the dead. It’s folklore that the boatman must be paid a fare and so previously pennies were placed on the eyes of the dead to ensure that souls reached their final destinations. Gilead is truly the land of the dead and Luke’s choice to pay the Boatman with his ring gives us pause for thought, what exactly did he give up in order to win his freedom?
Tumblr media
June hasn’t worn her wedding ring since she hit the shores of Canada, however we did of course see Nick wearing one. He’s worn one before and it’s ended in tragedy, in fact wedding rings seem more cursed than blessed on THT and Nicks not much happier second time around. This makes me wonder, with all this talk of losing fingers and rings symbolizing losing a connection with another individual; what can we expect with Nicks marriage in S6?
Next time, we’ll be talking about the Osblaine and Lurv tokens :D

Count Your Blessing
Rating: T
Relationship: England + Canada
Word Count: 833
Read on AO3
Chapter 3
It had been a little over a week, and somehow, Arthur easily slipped back into his role as father. Get up. Get Matthew up. Get breakfast (cereal, or, if he was feeling bold, toast because he didn’t need a burnt kitchen on top of everything else). Get cleaned up and dressed. Then see where the rest of the day led them.
It was rather…calming. Which was surprising since the last time he had taken care of Matthew at this age, it was anything but. Though perhaps Arthur finally had the experience he needed.
But there was still one issue.
His phone had been ringing non-stop. Matthew’s bosses most likely trying to inquire where he was and if Arthur knew anything.
Matthew crawled onto the couch beside him. “Why does your phone keep ringing Daddy?”
“Nothing you have to worry about my boy.”
“But you should answer. Maybe they’ll stop then.”
Arthur let out a long sigh. Unfortunately, the kid was right. “Fine, but I’ll need some privacy.”
“Okay…” Matthew moaned.
Arthur smiled lightly, ruffling Matthew’s curls. “Stay here. I’ll just be in the hall.”
With one final pat on the head, Arthur headed out of the living room and picked up his phone. “Yes, yes, hello,” he huffed.
“You’re a hard man to get a hold of Mr. England.”
“Yes. I’m a very busy man, so make it quick.”
“We haven’t heard from Canada. The last thing he said was that he was going to visit you.”
Arthur’s grip tightened. He peeked into the living room. Matthew was laying upside down on the couch, his little legs resting against the backrest, feet rocking back and forth.
“He’s…” Arthur drew out. “He’s with me. Um…You know how he can get, I'm sure. Bit burnt out and tired. I thought it may be a good idea to keep him here so I can keep an eye on him.”
There was a pause on the other end, a chair creaking in the background. “I guess it’s better than him wandering off to the woods.”
Arthur gave a tight hum, nodding along. “Yes. So no need to worry. I’ll take care of everything, and he should be home in…no time…”
“Thank you, Mr. England. Well, that’s all we needed. Enjoy the rest of your day.”
“Thank you. Good day.”
Arthur let out a collected sigh. Hopefully, Matthew really would be home in no time.
He popped his head back into the living room. “Are you up for some lunch Matthew?”
“Yes please!” Matthew cheered, rushing to Arthur’s side.
Arthur took Matthew’s hand and led him to the kitchen. “So what kind of sandwiches should we have today?”
“Hmmm…Cucumber?”
“Really?”
“Yes please.”
He was going to have to figure out something else for lunch going forward. He couldn’t keep giving Matthew sandwiches every day. But…Matthew seemed to enjoy it so far. And it wasn’t as though Arthur was a wizard in the kitchen.
As Arthur cut off the crust, his gaze drifted back over to Matthew. Feet dangling from the chair, cheek rested in his hand, the boy stared out the window.
“Would you like to go outside and eat, Matthew?”
“C-Can we?”
“Of course. Just let me get some containers and the picnic basket. Could you get us something to drink?”
“Mhm.”
With the addition of some cut-up fruit and the containers, the food was loaded into the basket, and they were off. Now just to find the perfect spot. “Where do you want to sit Matthew?”
Matthew looked around, a serious look on his face as if this was the most important decision ever. Arthur couldn’t help but chuckle.
“The pond,” Matthew finally answered, “We can watch the fish!”
“What a brilliant idea.” Arthur stretched out his free hand. “Shall we?”
Matthew took it. “Let’s go!”
Matthew, being the little helper he was, helped Arthur lay out the blanket right next to the fish pond. It was the perfect afternoon. A slight breeze kept the heat away, the small waterfall Alastair installed a few years ago trickled in the background, and the sandwiches, though simple, were the perfect lunch for such a nice summer day.
“It’s almost like the picnics we’d have near the creek at the cabin…” Matthew thought aloud. “We should do that again someday.”
Arthur froze. “Matthew…you…”
Matthew turned to Arthur, bright blue eyes blinking up at him innocently. “I-I’m sorry. We don’t have to. Just an idea…”
“No, no.” Arthur wrapped an arm around Matthew’s shoulder. “I…I’d love that. But we’ll have to wait until this spell reverses first. Okay?”
Matthew beamed. “Okay!”
So Matthew still had his memories. Or at the very least some of them. Arthur ran a hand through Matthew’s curls, the boy munching away on his sandwich. His stomach knotted at the idea that this little boy possibly remembered all that pain and violence. Yet, he was sitting there without a care in the world. Well, if Matthew didn’t seem worried, perhaps Arthur could relax a little too.

Heyo! It's been a hot minute since I visited this place and I'm starting fresh, so I figured I'd kick things off with a proper introduction post.
My name is Brittany M. Willows (she/her, "Bri" for short). I'm a self-published author and self-taught digital artist from rural Ontario, Canada. Science fiction, fantasy, and post-apocalyptic stories are my jam, and I tend to write some amalgamation of the three. I also stream art and games occasionally over on my Twitch channel and am currently working as a comic colorist/script writer.
Here's a quick rundown of my projects! I'll give them their own intro posts later on.
Works and WIPs to my Name
The Calypsis Project (2013) & TCP II Rebirth (2016): Known collectively as the Echo-Alpha Duology, this is my debut series! It's a science fiction/space opera that tells of an unlikely alliance of humans and lizard-like aliens in their mission to thwart a conspiracy that could see their whole galaxy upended. However, as it's currently slated for a rewrite, book #1 has been taken off the shelves haha
Bloody Spade (2021) & Bleeding Heart (2023): The Cardplay Duology is an anime-inspired YA urban fantasy about a cat-eared boy touched by dark magic and a softhearted girl with the power to cleanse it. It's queernormative, features a slow-burn romantic subplot, has plenty of hurt/comfort goodness, and a chaotic found family to boot.
p.s, Bloody Spade has an audiobook edition coming out on August 2nd! You can listen to a sample here.
The Howling Dark: This is the gay space werewolf brainworm that sprung from a dream a couple years back and has only been growing since. Set on an Earth-like planet recovering from the aftermath of a radioactive war, it follows fugitive werewolf brothers Sylvain and Illia on their search for a safe haven. It's currently in planning stages!
Bleakhouse: A more recent seedling of an idea that also originated from a dream! This gritty steampunk tale will tell the story of a mechanical girl bursting with soul, and a boy who's more machine than he looks. This has no real plot yet, but the vibes are good lmao.

Looking for a Pen Pal
Hi fellow pen pal seekers! My name is Ren and I used to have a couple Tumblr pen pals in University who I lost touch with. I really miss the snail mail experience and getting to know people in that unique way, so I wanted to see if there’s anyone who might be interested in exchanging letters. More about me if your interested: I’m 25 years old, an AFAB Nonbinary bisexual + Poly person and I’m from Turtle Island, or Canada, specifically Toronto/Tkaranto. I am into cartoons and anime (Nana, Fruits Basket, Studio Ghibli, Arcane, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, OTGW, Bee + Puppycat, Bojack Horseman are some of my faves). I love to read and my embarrassing weakness is fae fantasy romance (ACOTAR, The Cruel Prince series). I am slowing building a Kawaii fashion wardrobe and I love analyzing different facets of the style and pros and cons of it’s impact on society. I am an amateur sewer who is getting into making their own clothes and cosplay. A hobby I am tryin to resume at the moment is working out and pole dancing classes. I also love to draw and to write, both my own original writing as well as fanfiction. I am also a pagan who follows a reconstructionist Celtic polytheism path.  If any of these interests seem to vibe with you as someone you would like to exchange letters with please feel free to message me! I would love to find someone who likes to make their letters a bit EXTRA. I’d love to send each other stickers, pictures, drawings, cute inexpensive trinkets that would fit in a letter. Just making them pretty and fun for each other when we have the time.
