Saw a post about how Cailan is dumb in da:o which. Yes he is he's a fucking theirin and they only get one braincell every two generations and it went straight to Alistair. But I don't think he's as dumb as he looks.

Because! He's playing chicken with Loghain about foreign reinforcements because Cailan thinks he wins both ways. Either Ferelden beats the darkspawn incursion alone and he looks super cool, or they strengthen ties with Orlais and he gets more excuses to see his mistress. (Again, he's wrong and dumb but less). Crucially, he is willing to hold off and wait, if Loghain agrees.

But Loghain would rather die than let Orlais in even as allies because backstory bs so he folds even though he knows that Cailan's charge is stupid.

AND ALSO! The tunnels under the tower of Ishaal are SUS AS FUCK because to stop you going there too early they stick a guard there and he tells you "Oh no you can't come in here. We found some tunnels and Loghain has ordered us to explore them."

These are the same tunnels the darkspawn use to delay the signal fire.

This is never acknowledged.

Biography:

Born into a family of witches in Willowdale, Cailan has always been aware of the supernatural world. As a kid he found it difficult to keep secrets and used to tell his friends that he was magical. He liked to show off and perform ‘magic tricks’ in the playground. That led to his mother pulling him out of school. At least until he was old enough to keep quiet about what he was and he went back to school at the age of fifteen. However, after being homeschooled for years, Cailan tried hard to fit into high school and quickly fell into the wrong crowd.

He spent a lot of time studying with his grandmother, she showed him old spell books passed down through the generations and he soon found a passion for herbs and playing about with magical concoctions. He wasn’t the most talented witch but he did enjoy experimenting.

Cailan wasn’t the smartest academically but he managed to graduate from high school. Having no other real plans, he took a job in a local bar. He enjoyed the bar work, being a friendly and confident young man. He made supernatural contacts, the hours were good and the cash was enough to run his car and to get a small place of his own. He still supports his parents and family that live within Willowdale and he’d never abandon them. He is loyal to his coven and the town he grew up in.

Cailan has always been a charmer, he is outgoing, kind and he likes to help people. He never likes to think that he’s upset someone and despite his flaws, he tries to do the right thing. For the most part of his life, many would’ve called him a womaniser. He makes it no secret that he likes the company of women. He enjoys sex and flirting and for a long time he was so afraid to fully let anyone into his life. Despite his confidence, he doesn’t always believe in himself that way.

Though as the witch entered his mid twenties, he started to open up that part of himself. He fell in love with a wolf who spent a lot of time at the bar. She’d passed through the town and everything about her intrigued him and the woman soon moved in with him. It was the relationship Cailan had wanted, to be loved, to have something stable and to give everything of himself to her. He supported her through her full moons and through the smaller things in life. And when the woman said her dream was to run a comic book store, he used his life savings to help her do that. He’d been saving since he was sixteen and helped her refurbish an old place. It wasn’t his dream, he had never been a reader or interested in superheroes but he did it for her. He was happy.

Though a year ago, Cailan woke to an empty bed and a note beside him. She’d left with a member of her old pack and Cailan had no idea where she was or where to reach her. He was left with the store alone and with no other means to support himself, he had to keep up the place without her. He uses the back of the store to mess around with his potions and spells and as he reaches his thirties, he’s trying to move his life in a new direction.

still boggles my mind that in the year 2024 most players still ignore anora's character just to reduce her to a lying backstabber, when she only goes against you if:

you reveal her identity to ser cautherine and howe's soldiers, defeating the entire purpose of her disguise and also ignoring what she told you literally one minute before about how they can't know she's escaping with you - thereby betraying her first

you ignore her completely in denerim after she asks you to come talk to her, and only show up to the landsmeet

you bring up loghain's fate, and when she tells you that she would rather him be spared if possible, you tell her to her face that her father has to die
