Opal is widely known for its valuable gem varieties with play-of-colour, an optical phenomenon much appreciated, for example, by Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau artists. As a material, it is composed by micrometric or nanometric spherules of silica in an hydrated amorphous or poorly crystallized manner. Technically, silica may be amorphous (opal-A), both as a network (opal-AN) or as a gel (opal-AG), and may be crystallised as cristobalite (opal-C) and/or as tridimite (opal-CT), being found in sedimentary or volcanic deposits. Mineral or chemical impurities (e.g. clay minerals, copper, chalcedony) may be also present and affect its properties. A new classification of opals has been proposed by dividing it into five different categories: four non-absorbent, that include varieties with play-of-colour (precious opal, precious opal on host rock and precious opal in host rock) and without play-of-colour (common opal), and one absorbent (common or precious hydrophane). Many trade names are used for opal according to their composition and visual appearance, including precious opal (with play-of-colour), boulder opal, fire opal, matrix opal, cat’s-eye opal, hyalite, crystal opal, contra luz, xylopal, cacholong, green opal, blue opal, pink opal. Martin’s Christmas List!

Along with the following, Martin has given Mim some of his old textbooks on sorcery that he was sent when he moved to Swynlake in order to keep up his studies since he isn’t sure they will receive any more help from their parents. He knows they’re a bit dull of a Christmas gift but he hopes the other gifts will make up for that.

Medes also decided to gift her with time off from her lessons until the new year if she would like.

Pyrite: Quiet and docile gem, however, sometimes she has panic attacks that are difficult to deal with.

Sunstone: Conservative commander and team leader. Control freak with anger issues.

Cacholong: A bold and cheerful gem. In difficult times, she will behave cautiously so as not to run into trouble. She can support her teammates and show her hidden leadership qualities if needed.
