StEx in real life Part 1: Engines

These are mostly headcanon, as there are either too many inconsistencies or not enough information to properly assign every character an irl basis, but I thought it would be fun to do. Explanations are provided for each.

Rusty: CNJ 2-6-2T

Rusty was very hard to pick an irl counterpart for, as if he is based on a particular engine it's hard to tell as his helmet is misshapen to accommodate the actor's visibility. I feel like Rusty is more likely a tank steamer than a tender, and the helmet looks more like it has side tanks than any other shape. This 2-6-2 has a cowcatcher, a lamp on top of the smokebox, and even the same style of cab window as Rusty. So I'm satisfied to choose this as my irl counterpart for him.

Greaseball: EMD E9 A-unit

This isn't really headcanon as Greaseball's helmet looks incredibly close to an E9, and they're very iconic and memorable Union Pacific's rolling stock.

Electra: SNCF CC40101

This one is just literally fact. Electra is surprisingly the most specific character when it comes to their basis, as he has it printed on his helmet. It's an outdated choice for the "engine of the future", but he certainly looks retro-futuristic.

Poppa/Momma: Kansas Central 2-6-0

This one is very contradictory to what little info we have on the Old Steamer's class, but I decided to go with it. Poppa wears the Kansas Central logo on his hat, and given their similar designs I choose to believe Momma is from the same company. In Broadway Poppa is called "the Big Boy", but to my knowledge no UP Big Boys ever worked for KCS, and as the KCS logo lasted longer than the Big Boy line I prefer to use that. I love the idea of Poppa and Momma being old-fashioned American steamers, and this was the only KCS I could find.

Greaseball's gang

These ones are honestly just pure headcanon and very self-indulgent based on some of my favourite diesels. Felt weird leaving them out but trust me, there's nothing in canon to justify these.

Lube: BR Class 122

Gear: BR Class 08

Stex!Machina AU Introduction

This is a basic run down of the rolling stock themselves, and how they are different from canon. This will include abilities, and a little bit of lore.

The machines have three forms: thier humanoid form (the form we see in canon), thier machine form (rolling stock form in this case), and thier beast form.

The humanoid form varies between ten to fifteen feet tall. The smallest being caboosen, which are only about eight feet tall.

The rolling stock form is just as you expect. This gives them the ability to hide in plain sight. They are not blind in this form, the lights on thier fronts act as a heat sensor, allowing them to “see” in this form. They can communicate through a voice modulator located in the cab of the locomotive, allowing them to communicate with thier drivers with ease.

The beast form was once widely known, but was later declared a myth when thier beast forms went dormant. Poppa however, managed to reactivate his, and kept it a secret until Rusty found out. All machines have a beast form.

Let’s start off with the steam locomotives. They are the most feared race out of all of the rolling stock. They are among the eldest of races, and easily the most powerful. The beast form of these creatures are much more draconic than all the other rolling stock.

The steam locomotives have a fire burning inside them in thier chest in thier humanoid form, and in thier bellies in thier beast form. The fire rises and falls according to the mood of the engine, and in accordance to how much they consume. They constanty need to feed to keep thier fire burning, giving them ravenous appetites.

The steam locomotives are carnivores, but have evolved to be able to munch on fruits, and berries, but they seldom choose to, preferring to hunt and chase after prey. However, they have grown rather tame due to domestication and being fed by humans, but thier instincts reamined intact.The instincts themselves are more of bloodlust than anything. They are born killers from the start, already craving the blood of thier prey. This carries on for the rest of thier lives.

They have the ability to spit flames like a dragon, and climb better than the rest of the rolling stock. This is due to the fire inside them, and living up in the mountains. They can sometimes climb trees to pursue prey if they choose to.

Diesel locomotives are omnivores, and are cold blooded. They can often be seen sunbathing early in the morning, and throughout the day. The colder they are, the slower they are. The warmer they become, the faster they get.

Diesel locomotives live in groups varying between five to twenty, These are called packs. They have a set of rules, and a pecking order. In this case, Greaseball is the Alpha of his pack, and protects his pack at all costs. They are highly social, and are known to take in other rolling stock into the pack, but this rarely happens.

Diesels have the ability to belch a highly flamable, and poisonous gas that can easily make a human go blind in just a small amount. This is both thier strength, and weakness since the flamable gas can easily be used against them. They are aware of this, and is the reason why they hardly use this. When they do, they usually have an electric locomotive in thier company to ignite the gas, or on rare occasions, they may be in the company of a steam engine.

Diesels have retractable claws in thier beast form, but they do not make the best climbers, or swimmers. However, they are easier to take care of because they only need to feed once a week, until fall, then they eat constantly to get ready for hibernation in the wintertime.

Electric engines are easily the most graceful of the rolling stock. They are known for thier slender form, and unusual appearance. They are the only rolling stock that are excellent swimmers. They are highly social, and tend to form small groups with other rolling stock, known as components. They share a very strong bond, and sometimes even assigned at birth.They head South for the Winter.

They have the ability to swim, and discharge large amounts of electricity to make equipement malfunction and shut down. They can lower thier body temperature to the enviroment, making them almost impossible for them to spot with a thermal camera.

The passenger coaches are by far the most tame. They are known for thier gentle and caring demeanor. They are fiercely protective of children, and have been known to nurture lost children until they are found. Sleeping cars are nocturnal, only coming out at night to search for food, while the others sleep. They are omnivores.

Frieght trucks are a mix between tame, and downright unpredictable. Some, like Dustin are rather docile, while others, like Flat Top, are rather moody, and difficult to control. They are omnivores. Caboosen however, a renowned scavengers. Caboosen are often seen following other rolling stock around, eating scraps of food the rolling stock they are following leave behind.

That’s about it for now. I will focus more on thier anatomy, and biology next time.

StEx Character Recognition: Flying Hamburger

Way back in May in my post “Stexperts: Ever Notice? #4″, I had touched upon the Australia/Japan tour character, Flying Hamburger who was based on the German train, Fliegender Hamburger (literally “Flying Hamburger”). Since then I’ve discovered more information regarding the real-life train that I felt worth mentioning, and now seems like a good as time as any to touch upon it. If you’re like me and like the artistic challenge of real-train AUs, you might find this interesting. (If you don’t go for real-train AUs, that’s perfectly fine btw! Write and develop your toy-based headcanons and fanfics!)

In the original post, I had mentioned that F.H. is a diesel train that was made up of two cars, and I had put forth the question of where his twin brother would be while this character is racing with one of the Joule sisters. I was excited for the worldbuilding opportunities of this detail.

This is what I discovered on the German version of the Wikipedia article for the Fliegender Hamburger.

“Nach seiner Abstellung wurde das Fahrzeug dem Verkehrsmuseum Nürnberg übergeben, dort wurde der Triebwagen getrennt. Die vordere Triebwagenhälfte a wurde wegen Platzmangels nochmals in der Mitte zerschnitten, der Torso mit Führerstand ist heute im Verkehrsmuseum Nürnberg ausgestellt. Die Sektion b wurde 1961 im AW Nürnberg mangels Interessenten ebenso verschrottet wie die restliche Hälfte der Sektion a.”

Google translates this as:

“After his departure, the vehicle was handed over to the Nuremberg Transport Museum, where the motor coach was separated. Because of lack of space, the front half of the wagon a was cut once more in the middle, the torso with driver's cab is now exhibited in the Verkehrsmuseum in Nuremberg. Section b was scrapped at the AW Nuremberg in 1961 as well as the rest of the section a.”

While this really has no bearing on the canon show where F.H. is just a toy whose other half probably is still in the box or something for the sake of having him race with a motor-free partner, I think it’s interesting that if the real train was in the race, we would have a character who not only lost his twin but who is also an amputee that still decides to race anyway (and with a complete stranger like the Joule sister). That’s a lot of depth for just an ensemble character!

I've been busy... /ref

Here are some of my StEx pride headcanons in the form of some nifty flags! I had a blast making these!

Carrie is cisgender and asexual.

Rusty is cisgender, demiromantic, and asexual.

Opal is cisgender, panromantic, and asexual (more specifically I imagine she's sex-repulsed ace)

Zero is omnisexual and genderfluid.

Cabs is cisgender and bisexual.

Joule is girlflux and pansexual.

And I made these two for my friends @gb-diesellok and @electricfied-wolf! Greaseball is omnisexual and intersex, and Elektra/ELEDtra/E-lectra is biromantic asexual!

I had a blast making these, and honestly, if anyone has any StEx (Sonic is cool too!) pride flag/hcs requests, please drop em in my inbox! These were a lot of fun and I'd love to make more for you all!
