"Looks like anyone who's ever been in a movie lives on this block," Columbus stated, reading the map he picked up as Tally drove you through the Hollywood Hills.

"What exactly you think we're doin' in the 90210, Sally?" Tallahassee smirked.

"I pictured Tom Cruise living somewhere nicer," Wichita stated as you passed his house.

"Definitely," you agreed, watching it go by.

After driving through Arizona and into California, the five of you agreed to keep your little troupe going until you reached Pacific Playland.

Though, Tallahassee had an idea of somewhere you all could crash for some R 'n R.

So that was where you were going first.

"He's a B-lister compared to who I got in mind, folks. We're goin' to the tippy top of the A-list," he assured

"Who?" Little Rock asked.

"You'll see," he cheesed.

Turning the corner, he rode up the driveway of a house with a golden BM on its gates.

"It's a big BM?" Columbus asked.

"And it ain't Bob Marley," Tal quipped.

He pulled over and the lot of you got out, heading in through the ornate front doors.

The place was beyond fancy with golden in nearly every corner, and big, beautiful archways.

It was a gorgeous house.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to La Mancion de Murray," Tal proudly introduced, walking the four of you into a room where a large painting of the famous comedian stood.

"You've gotta be jokin'," you smiled.

"No way. This guy has a direct line to my funny bone," Wichita gasped.

"Whoa, whoa, wait. Who's Bill Murray?" Little Rock asked, confused.

"Hey, I've never hit a kid before," Tal shook his head, disappointed.

"I blame you," you turned to Wichita, "Poor girl wasn't educated."

"I mean, that's like asking who Gandhi is," Tal waved off.

"Who's Gandhi?" The little girl asked again.

You cocked a brow at Wichita, and she scoffed, "She's twelve."

"And you're failing as a parental figure," you shrugged, heading towards the kitchen.

"There's no Twinkies in here," Columbus reported, already having checked every cabinet.

"Shit fuck!" Tally cursed, walking in and kicking a low cabinet.

"Told ya we shoulda gone to Russell Crowe's," you cooed, sitting yourself down on the counter in front of him, "But you don't listen."

"Excuse me for makin' mistake, Miss Perfect," he taunted, rolling his eyes and leaning against the side of the counter.

"Hello? Inside voices," Columbus reminded, picking up his gun, "At least until we know we're alone. Tallahassee, Jersey, take that way. Little Rock, Wichita, come with me."

"Why do I get stuck with her?" Tal complained.

Fakely, of course.

"I'm not jumpin' to be put with you, either, cowboy," you scoffed with a smile, hopping off the counter and bumping him with your hip, heading off in the direction Columbus pointed.

Before he followed you, shut his eyes and took a deep breath, regaining his composure.

You had to be doing this shit on purpose.

No way you weren't.

Walking into one of the bedrooms, the two of you shared a look, glancing at the bed, before looking at each other again.

You booked it, but Tal, already guessing your plan, grabbed you by your waist and tossed you back, running for the bed himself.

"Fuckin' cheat!" You exclaimed, recovering and chasing him.

"You snooze, you lose, sweetheart," he smirked, flopping belly first onto the bed.

But you walked over and grabbed him by his ankles, flipping him over the side.

He landed on the floor with a groan, and you happily crawled on the bed, leaning over the edge to look at him.

You grabbed his hat off his head, carefully placing it on your head.

"Guess you could say I gotchu floored, huh?" You smirked.

He looked up at you with a smile, caught off-guard by the horrible pun.

God, you looked so pretty with his hat on your head.

"I'm gonna pretend I didn't hear that," he denied.

"Oh, c'mon, you've said way worse," you scoffed, crawling over and putting down your feet.

"I just add that charm to it," he smirked, standing up and dusting himself off, "S'a me thing, y'know."

"All right, then. Let me try," you cleared your throat, prepping your voice for his country accent, "Guess you could say I gotchu floored, huh?"

He shook his head, throwing an arm around your shoulder, "Needs work."

"I think the hat should give me extra points," you adjusted it as you two walked into the next room.

It sounded like the other three were watching Ghostbusters somewhere, 'cause the theme song could be heard crystal clear in this room.

Tally threw off his jacket as he shimmied, throwing himself onto the couch and holding up his feet.

"Help me with the boots. C'mon," he bicycled to the music, clapping.

You rolled your eyes and grabbed the things, yanking them off and tossing them somewhere.

"Thanks, doll," he smiled, sitting up.

"Sure," you blushed, quickly covering by picking up the golf club and balls you found in the corner of the room.

You set up shop were you found them, picking out a ball and winding up your swing, smacking it into the fireplace.

Tally was back up again, horribly dancing to the music still playing, humming along here and there.

You wound up another swing, hitting the ball into the wall, making it roll off somewhere.

Behind the music, you could've sworn you heard the sounds of footsteps, but you paid it no mind.

Probably just one of the others.

Or maybe some sort of creaking.

This place was abandoned, after all.

You didn't really care either way.

It was the one time you could finally let your guard down, finally let loose and live life past the nightmare outside.

You already had enough to worry about.

You wound up again, a little anger fueling your swing as the ball smacked into the window sill, ricocheting off a whole bunch of things until it hit Tallahassee in the face.

He groaned, and dropped to his knees, before allowing himself to fully flop on the ground.

"Shit!" You winced, quickly running over, and kneeling down in front to him "Tally, I am so sorry. It was an accident."

The footsteps had gotten louder but you still ignored it, more focused on making sure your cowboy was all right.

You lifted his chin, checking his eyes to make sure he didn't have a concussion, and they looked fine until they went wide, landing on something behind you.

"Bill Murray, you're a zombie?" He winced.

You quickly whipped around and grabbed your club in one motion, using it to hit Murray in the knees and make him fall.

"Auugh! Ow! I'm on fire!" He shouted in pain, rolling over and clutching his ass, "Ouch!"

"You're not a zombie, you're talkin'....you're okay?" Tal asked, confused, as the two of you stood up.

"The hell I am!" He exclaimed, slowly and painfully, pulling himself up.

'Coulda fooled me.'

"I'm sorry. I didn't know that it was you you," you apologized.

"Are you...? What's with the get up?" Tal asked, referring to the zombie makeup the actor had on for some reason.

"Oh, I do it to blend in. Zombies don't mess with other zombies," he panted, breathing himself through the pain, "Buddy of mine showed me how to do this. Cornstarch. You know, some berries, a little licorice for the ladies."

You nodded, not understanding a single word of what this man was saying.

'Maybe he hit his head, too.'

"Suits my lifestyle, y'know. I like to get out and do stuff. Just played nine holes on the Riviera. Just walked on. Nobody there."

Tal smiled his shouting smile, and you took a deep sigh, prepping your ears.

"Goddamn it, Bill fuckin' Murray!" He exclaimed, pumping his fist in the air, "I had to get that out. I don't mean to gush. This is so surreal. I mean, you probably get this all the time. ....Well, maybe not lately, but I'm such a huge fan of yours."

Bill smiled, bowing a humble thanks.

"I've seen every one of your movies a million times. I even love your dramatic roles and just everything," he continued, "Seven people left in the world, one of them is Bill fuckin' Murray. I know that's not your middle name but I just...I been watching your movies since I was...er...since I could masturbate. Not that the two were connected."

You could tell he was going off the rails a little, so you rested a comforting hand on his shoulder.

"Tal, hon, I think he understands," you snickered, hopefully reeling him in a little bit.

"It's all right. That's why we do it," Bill smiled.

"I love you, Bill. I love you," Tal finished, giving him a quick bow.

"Thank you," he turned to you, noticing that your eyes had set sights on his unruly hair.

"You are staring at me. It's a hairpiece," he assured, lifting it and putting it back down.

"Sorry, no, it was just that you look remarkably like Eddie Van Halen," you laughed.

"I just saw Eddie Van Halen" he nodded.

"No way," you gasped.

"Where?" Tal asked.

"At the Hollywood Bowl."

"How was that?"

"Well, he's a zombie."

You sucked your teeth, "That's a tough break."

The three of you stood there for a moment, awkwardly, until Bill broke the silence.

"Well, how about a little West Coast hospitality. Can I get you something? What would you like?"

You and Tally turned to each other at the same time, sharing the same devilish smirk.

A bunch of weed and couple reenactments later, and the three of you were now right outside the home theater, getting ready to send in Bill.

Wichita, Little Rock, and Columbus were in there, watching Ghostbusters, and you and Tal planned to have Bill walk in and scare the shit out of them.

Everyone will scream, everyone will laugh, it was gonna be a grand ol' time.

"Wait, wait, wait," you stopped them, "I saw a Polaroid in the other room. I wanna get a pic of Doofus' face."

The two men nodded and you quickly scurried off to find the camera, excited.

They both were warmed at how giddy and relaxed you looked, but Bill could tell that Tal was enjoying it a great deal more than him.

"Your wife's lovely. A very kind woman," Bill complimented, leaning against the wall.

"Oh, you're seein' her happy. Wait 'til you piss 'er off," Tally scoffed with a smile.

After a moment's delay, he finally processed the sentence, snapping his head over to the actor, "Wait, wife?"

"Yeah," Bill nodded, cocking a brow, "You guys are married, right?"

"Oh, no, no, no, we're not like that," Tal assured, "Just very good friends."

Bill's eyebrows flattened almost immediately, and he gave the man a very sarcastic look.

People were still doing this shit at the end of the world?

"You're joking, right?" He asked, wondering if this was all a big joke.

Tal shook his head.

Bill sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, "That's impossible. You two are very obviously in love."

"Nah," Tal shook his head again, crossing his arms, "I mean, don't get me wrong, I may be sweet on the gal, but she's too good for me. She deserves someone better."

"Don't know if you took a look outside lately, but last I checked, there is no one better," Bill corrected.

"And even if there was, that woman is still blatantly in love with y-." "Sorry for the wait, I got lost," you came back, camera in hand.

The two men quickly clammed up, covering any sort of hint as to what they were talking about before.

"So Columbus is the scared one?" Bill asked, slipping on his wig as if nothing happened.

Must be all the acting.

"Yeah. He's like a little mouse," you nodded, holding the camera at the ready.

Tal was still lost in deep thought, replaying his conversation with Bill.

Him being in love with you? ....Possibility

You being in love with him? No way in hell.

Bill had to be pulling his leg. It was impossible.

If it was true, surely he would've seen some sort of sign from you.

But you'd done nothing out of the ordinary....to his recollection.

"I'll get him," Bill assured, holding up his arms like a zombie, "Watch this.

He skulked into the theater, loudly groaning and grunting like a zombie.

And Columbus yelped in fright.

But just as you popped in the door to snap the picture, Columbus picked up his gun and shot Bill square in the chest, your camera catching the whole thing.

He let out a loud shout of pain and dropped into the closest chair.

"Holy shit!" You exclaimed, everyone quickly rushing to his aid.

"No, no, it's okay, it's okay. I got him," Columbus assured.

"Is that.... how you say hello.... where you're from?" Bill asked, weakly.

Columbus' eyes went wide in realization, and he raked a nervous hand through his hair, "Oh my God. I can't believe I just shot Bill Murray."

Tal shook his head sadly, turning to the poor man, "Mr. Murray?"

"I'm just Bill, I think, now," he sighed.

"Bill...I don't think we're gonna be able to stitch this," Tal admitted.

You rested a soft hand on Bill's shoulder, "You think you can pull through?"

He turned to you, and shook his head, "No."

"If it's worth anything now, I am so sorry. It was just instinctive," Columbus quickly apologized.

"It was my bad," Bill assured, "I was never a very good practical joker."

Little Rock crouched down to his eye level, "So, do you have any regrets?"

He paused for a moment, thinking.

"Garfield, maybe."

'Very fair.'

And with a final, incredibly long breath, Bill Murray, the zombie-impersonating actor, was dead.

Wichita let out a snicker, and everyone turned to her with disbelief.

"I'm sorry. He just gets me," she apologized, her smile quickly falling, "But it still is sad."

You nodded, "Even worse to have a polaroid of it."

You somberly held up the photo, which showed the flash of the gun and Columbus' terrified face, along with Bill's body falling into the chair.

𝒛 𝒐 𝒎 𝒃 𝒊 𝒆 𝒍 𝒂 𝒏 𝒅

After giving Bill a proper send off, and disposing the body, the crew decided the best way to cancel out the depressing end of the day was to play some late night Monopoly.

So here you were, curled up next to Tallahassee as you did your best to stay awake through the painfully boring game

"Ooo, free parking," Wichita commended Little Rock as she landed on the space, "Which is the best thing about Zombieland."

"No, best thing about Z-land, no Facebook status updates," Columbus chimed, "You know, Rob Curtis is gearin' up for Friday. Who cares?"

"The best thing is no more flushing," Tal corrected, taking a bite of his Ding Dong, "Epic."

"And the worst thing about Z-land?" Wichita asked.

"You mean, other than the fact that I shot Bill Murray?" Columbus hung his head.

"That's easy," Tal nodded, "Losin' Buck."

The girls looked confused

"S'his puppy," you yawned, trying to stay awake and present in the conversation.

"I'm gonna tell you, I never thought I could love anything like Buck," he sighed, "He was just...the day he was born, I just lost my mind."

Wichita looked down, guilty, "Sorry."

"We were two peas. He had my personality, my laugh, my appetite."

...

'Laugh?'

And that's when it hit you.

Buck wasn't a puppy.

Buck was a boy.

Buck was his son.

'Holy shit.'

You felt like shit. Pure, bonefide shit.

How had you not noticed the signs?

How had you not noticed that outside your own selfish pool of despair, there were others circling the drain, too?

Tal had gotten choked up, his eyes glassy as he fished something out his pocket.

"We made this wallet together out of duct tape," he sniffled, handing it to you.

You carefully took it, tearing up at the pictures of the little, blonde boy, who was nothing but smiles.

It was adorably homemade, the tape not uniform at all and still a little sticky. But it was clear that it was well loved and held a multitude of memories for Tal.

'Fuckin' hell.'

You handed it back to him, giving his shoulder a comforting rub and shooting a sincere look.

He gave you a small nod of thanks, and started to pull himself together, sniffling for the last time.

"I haven't cried like that since Titantic," he sighed, dabbing away a couple tears with some cash.

Today, according to Clare Foran, Manu Raju, and Morgan Rimmer of CNN, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told his Republican colleagues that he will not bring forward the bipartisan immigration bill senators have been working on for months, calling it “absolutely dead.”

Although Johnson insisted in November that border security was so crucial that he wouldn’t bring up aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and Gaza until such legislation was attached to it, Trump has made it clear he wants immigration and border security left on the table for him to use as an issue in his run for the presidency.

Instead of addressing border security through legislation, House Republicans instead are moving forward with their plan to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. They wrote articles of impeachment even before holding hearings. Today, members of the House Homeland Security Committee held a hearing to mark up those articles, which claim that Mayorkas committed high crimes and misdemeanors because he allegedly breached the public trust and refused to enforce immigration law.

In all our history, only one cabinet officer has been impeached. William Belknap, whose eight years as secretary of war under President U. S. Grant had been marked by ostentatious displays of wealth and apparent kickbacks from army contracts, was charged with corruption in March 1876 just hours after he tearfully handed Grant his resignation.

The House charged Belknap with “criminally disregarding his duty as Secretary of War and basely prostituting his high office to his lust for private gain.” The Senate agreed that it had jurisdiction to hold an impeachment trial even for a former government official, for an officer should not be able to escape justice simply by resigning. After hearing more than 40 witnesses, a majority of senators voted to convict Belknap on each of five charges, but no vote reached the necessary two-thirds threshold for conviction, and he was therefore acquitted.

Almost 150 years later, the impeachment of Mayorkas would be the second effort to impeach a cabinet member. Yet there is no suggestion that Mayorkas has done anything but try to implement the law, even as the administration has repeatedly asked for more funding to make it possible for him to do his job.

In the hearing today, Representative Seth Magaziner (D-RI) noted that “across the system, we are at and above capacity, and so, what should the secretary do? The secretary, because he has not received the funding to provide adequate detention capacity, has to use his judgment for who to detain and who to release. That is not illegal. It is certainly not impeachable. And it is the exact same kind of discretion that every other director before him has used. In the last two years of the Trump administration, 52% of migrants apprehended at the southern border were released, not detained…. Nearly a million people. I did not hear my Republican colleagues trying to impeach the secretary or acting secretary under the Trump administration during those years. But here they are, trying to impeach Secretary Mayorkas for doing the exact same thing.”

Rather than passing the laws the country needs, the extremist Republicans appear to be determined to tee up an issue on which Trump can run for president in 2024. House speaker Johnson has demanded “ZERO” illegal crossings into the U.S., but this is a standard that no previous homeland security secretary has met because it is impossible to wall off every single means of entering this country by water, air, or land. And—despite Republicans’ false claims that Biden has established “open borders”—immigrants were more likely to be released into the country during Trump's term than during Biden’s.

What is going on here is an attempt of the extremist Republicans to undercut the administration by attacking a key cabinet officer not for actual misbehavior but on policy grounds.

There is no chance the Senate, dominated by Democrats, will convict Mayorkas even if the House, with its razor-thin Republican majority, impeaches him, but the extremist minority in the House that is going after him is attempting to set a precedent that a minority can stop the government from functioning.

The cost of that obstruction has been clear in domestic politics over government funding, but it has now become a global issue over the question of U.S. support for Ukraine. Johnson had said he would not bring forward a bill to provide supplemental funding for Ukraine unless it included measures for increased border security; now his rejection of a bill to provide that border security threatens Ukraine aid.

Ukraine is defending itself against an invasion by Russia, but the struggle there is larger than one between two countries: it is the question of whether the rules-based international order put in place after World War II will survive, or whether the world will go back to a system in which stronger countries can gobble up less powerful ones.

Military aid for Ukraine is widely popular among Americans and among American lawmakers, who recognize the larger questions at stake. But extremist Republicans are siding with Trump, who has made his preference for Russia and its autocratic leader over Ukraine clear. The realization that a few extremist Republicans are scuttling Ukraine aid has prompted officials from both parties to warn of the consequences if the U.S. stops providing support to Ukraine.

In Foreign Affairs today, Central Intelligence Agency director Wililam Burns noted that the war has weakened Putin’s Russia significantly. Aid to Ukraine has amounted to less than 5% of the U.S. defense budget, “a relatively modest investment with significant geopolitical returns for the United States and notable returns for American industry,” he wrote.

“For the United States to walk away from the conflict at this crucial moment and cut off support to Ukraine would be an own goal of historic proportions,” Burns said. The secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Jens Stoltenberg, has been in Washington, D.C., this week, urging Republicans to back the aid, if only on the grounds that most of the money appropriated goes to support jobs in the U.S.

The man behind the extremists, Trump, was in the news today for the fact that the political action committees that back him spent about $50 million covering his legal bills in 2023. That money came from donors and arrived primarily in the months after the 2020 presidential election, when Trump lied that he had actually won the election and needed financial support to challenge the results.

Jon popped his head up bonking his head as he was under the cabinet getting snacks out for his little Y/N. She opened the door and giggled hugging on the large Samoan man, he returned the hug picking her up tickling her. “Hows uncles little flower huh?” he chuckled. “Ims goods! Dada in de kitchens!” “Oh? Well thank you hun.” she got down and pulled Roman towards the way, he haand he happily followed calling Jon’s name. “Hey, Jo.” He rubbed his head as he sat on the floor. “Dada hurts?” Y/N pouts and hugged him unsure what to do. “It's ok Puddin, I'm fine. But next time I answer doors ok?” she nodded and soon got curious wanting to see what was behind Roman’s Back.

“How you been man?” Jon asked as he got the chips and her sippy cup together. “I've been an ok man. Wanted to check on you and flower. Is it close to her snack time?” he asked keeping the bag behind him high so she couldn't get it. She pouted struggling, on her toes wanting the bag whining. “Uncle! I want!” He looked down at her. “Well sweetie you ask nicely. You know better.” Jon said as he washed his hands from peeling and cutting fresh apples. She pouted playing with her fingers feeling she was in trouble and Jon sighed. “Puddin, go wash your hands for snack time and Uncle will show you what he has.” She nodded and she ran to the bathroom not wanting to cause any more issues. “Ok, what you got her this time?” Roman smiled tossing him the bag and letting him look inside. “Hm. I hope she...nevermind.” He trailed off. Roman lifted his brow in curiosity. “What?” “Oh nothing. She probably grew out of that. She's in her age cycle of 4-6 so I'm sure she's-” Jon stopped as Y/N came back with wet hands. Jon smiled giving her a towel and she ran off to the table to get her lunch. Roman was still curious but he can just ignore it for now.

After lunch and Roman helping Jon clean up, Roman dropped the bag in front of Y/N and she looked up at him. “Go on baby.” She smiled and pulled out a cheetah print onesie. “Ahhhh fank chu Uncle!!” she smiled running upstairs to put it on. Jon smiled playing punching Romans's shoulder. “Stop trying to beat Bryan at being a better uncle.” Roman just laughed.

10 minutes passed and Roman looked up the stairs calling Y/N. “Hey Jon. She's been taking too long up there..” Jon looked up the stairs as well a bit worried. “I'll go check on her.” He walked up the stairs calling her again and looked around the halls. He saw that he heard a low growl, he sighed and looked behind him feeling a presents near. “Puddin?” he called once more until he heard the growl behind him.

She was in the cheetah onesie ready to pounce on her caregiver. He held his hand out being careful with the wild little, she growled making a clawing motion. “Hey now...i mean no harm.” she growled more and pounced catching herself so she didn't bump her head but Jon saw it as a escape. He ran downstairs and grabbed a confused Roman. “What?! What's going on?” “She's feral. You gave her a cheetah onesie. Now she's out for our necks.” Roman soon heard the wild little come down sniffing and looking for the caregivers. They were crouched in front of the sofa trying to escape. Jon made the hush motion and told him to go the left way to the kitchen. They started to make their way there but job knocked over a stuffed animal, making them run. She growled running after them. “How did she get like this?” he asked hiding beside the refrigerator. “Onesies just make her Feral.” He sighed wishing there was a warning. The feral cheetah little sniffed around looking around but soon went back to normal seeing some cookies in a bag. “Daddy can I get a cookie?” Jon sighed happy the chase is over. “Yes puddin you can.” she smiled taking the hoodie off and going to the sofa with the bag of cookies. Roman just looked at Jon sighing as he laughed some.

More of the paintings of the Palisandre Drawing-Room of Her Majesty at the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo In the Palisandre Drawing-Room of the Empress, there was a multitude of paintings, watercolours, pastels and prints. Most of the paintings were hung along two particular walls - the wall leading to the Lilac Cabinet and the wall leading to the Maple Living-Room. The two most well-known of these paintings still reside with GMZ Tsarskoe Selo and have recently been reframed with recreated wooden frames to match the originals which were lost during the Second World War. Gosfond (The State Museum Catalogue of the Museum Fund in Russia) has a wealth of a collection that spans the entire country with a range of objects ranging from drawings, photographs, sculpture, paintings, portraits, miniatures, vases, etc. GMZ Pavlovsk is the major keeper of what was evacuated from the Alexander Palace during the war. In its collection is 1,078 items which vary from paintings, fabric hangings from the rooms, sculpture, art glass, etc. Of these, I was able to find six paintings which up until 1941 hung on the walls of the Palisandre Drawing-Room of Her Majesty. From the 1928 Catalog on the Alexander Palace-Museum (Furnishings) by I. Yakovlev and translated generously by Stephen R. de Angelis (available via www.bookemon.com), are the titles that correspond to these ten paintings: "The Annunciation." Lula's government is criticized for creating an area for therapeutic communities after pressure from Brazilian religious entities

Responding to requests from religious entities, the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers' Party) government created a specific sector for therapeutic communities aimed at treating drug addicts, structures encouraged by the Jair Bolsonaro (Liberal Party) administration.

The creation of the Department of Support for Therapeutic Communities, published on January 20th 2022, raises criticism from human rights organizations contrary to the sheltering of drug addicts generally based on isolation, abstinence, and religiosity. To circumvent the pressures, the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family, and Fight against Hunger went on to say that the sector is under review.

One of the solutions evaluated by the government is to change the cabinet's name to reinforce the discourse that it does not serve only therapeutic communities, say members of the government who follow the discussion.

The department was not part of the initial structure of the new ministry. The area was created by decree published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette three days after the team of Minister Wellington Dias (Workers' Party) received representatives from the treatment centers. The group had been complaining about the extinction of Senapred (National Secretariat for Care and Prevention of Drugs), focused on dialogue with communities during the Bolsonaro government.

Confenact (National Confederation of Therapeutic Communities) participated in the meeting with the new government. During the elections, the confederation published an image of Bolsonaro on social networks, in addition to messages from members advocating voting for candidates against drugs, abortion, and "gender ideology".

The confederation told the report that it supports public policies and governments that adopt as a strategy "the non-liberation of drugs, the non-decriminalization of marijuana or any other illicit drug, the defense of Christian principles and values, abstinence as a prevention and treatment strategy, spirituality, [and] the work of third sector entities".

On Tuesday (24), the National Council for Human Rights (which brings together representatives of civil society and public power) cited the creation of the department and recommended that the Lula government audit all contracts signed with therapeutic communities in the past administration, in addition to the cancellation of partnerships with entities that receive teenagers.

The council also suggested to the Ministry of Health the creation of a program "aiming at the effective replacement of therapeutic communities by territorial mental health strategies and services".

Federal funding for these structures has exploded in recent years. It went from R$44 million in 2017 to around R$ 100 million [~US$ 19.41 million] in 2019, according to a survey by Conectas, an NGO dedicated to human rights.

The 2023 Budget has R$ 272 million [~US$ 52.79 million] reserved for "drug demand reduction". This budgetary action primarily serves these communities.

A 2020 survey by Folha de S.Paulo showed that 74% of therapeutic communities that received federal funding were religious in origin.

Treatment sites still have strong support from Congress. Of the amount reserved for this year, R$ 75 million [~US$ 14.56 million] are from individual amendments by parliamentarians, a number higher than the R$ 45 million [~US$ 8.73 million] indicated by deputies and senators in 2022.

The bet on therapeutic communities is resisted by members of the Lula government and the left.

The health transition group, of which Minister Nísia Trindade was a member, suggested in the final report the immediate repeal of government regulations linked to these entities. The human rights group also recommended reviewing the Bolsonaro government's policies on the topic.

The previous management even used BRL 24.5 million [~US$ 4.75 million] leftovers from Bolsa Família to cover expenses with these communities, as revealed by Folha de S. Paulo.

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), stated in one of the first speeches after taking office that he intends to increase vacancies in therapeutic communities. For Gabriel Sampaio, director of Conectas, inspection of these treatment centers should be carried out by the Ministry of Health and follow SUS (Brazil's unified public healthcare system) standards, in addition to national and international regulations on human rights.

He also claims that there is a high volume of public resources destined to communities with little control over the works.

Confenact said that there are more than 2,000 therapeutic communities in Brazil and that this type of structure is one of the treatment alternatives for people with dependence on alcohol and other drugs. They also said that the effectiveness of reception is scientifically proven.

"Involuntary admissions are not among the characteristics of therapeutic communities, whether in the legal, technical, nor in the scope of current regulations.", stated the confederation.

Representative of Renila (National Inter-nuclei Network of the Anti-Asylum Fight), a group that criticizes the creation of the department, psychologist and psychiatrist Miriam Abou-Yd said that the therapeutic community is one of the impasses that surround the Lula government.

She claims that inspections carried out in these spaces find "restriction of the right to come and go, imposition of creed", in addition to the performance of unqualified professionals and the work of inmates, in situations "similar to slave labor".

"It is the most faithful photograph of the use of the suffering and the body of the other, always in the name of faith, but generating profit for ambitious, voracious and ruthless entrepreneurs", said Miriam.

Sought, the Ministry of Development said only that "the decree is being reviewed". The cabinet did not say how much should be passed on to therapeutic communities in 2023 and who will lead the new department.

Cirque du Soleil Kurios review (abbreviated)

I was in DC this weekend, Kurios was in DC this weekend, and as is my eternal fate there was no force on earth that would keep me out from under the big top. This was my fourth time seeing Kurios, and after my third time I remember telling myself “that was fun but that’s enough.” But that was five years ago! And it’s post-pan Cirque! I can’t resist!

Turns out I was right, three times was enough. But as usual I’m not sorry I went, most notably because it was an excellent opportunity to meet a friend from the Discord server, watch him experience his very first GC show, and get about a thousand little things he very much deserved out of the whole experience. There’s nothing I love more than being there for someone’s “Cirque first,” whatever that might mean to them. I’d never had the opportunity to witness it at such a unique distance before - a little ways behind him, in full view, where I could see him take it all in by himself. It was really special. Thanks for letting me share it with you, CJ!

I’m going to keep this review to notes and updates since I’ve gone into great detail three times over already. But - and I always feel bad saying it - overall my unfortunate feeling is that Kurios is a very shallow show. It’s fun to look at, there’s a lot of action, and even now there are elements that feel very different from other shows out there, both Cirque and otherwise. But there just isn’t a lot of depth. The element of oddity and surprise are its strengths, and once you already know what’s coming you’re kind of just there for it. The characters are cool but utterly fixed for the duration, and the acts - while stunningly high quality - don’t bring much to the setting beyond “here’s another cool thing we can do and still fit the theme.” There are exceptions of course, and I think this sense is probably mitigated somewhat if you’re particularly attracted to a steampunk aesthetic. Personally I am not, so there’s kind of no saving me.

I got the same sense from the friends I attended with. “Neat!” ...And for us that’s about it. I don’t think I’ll seek it out if it makes its way back to NYC, and in fact I’ll be disappointed if it comes in favor of other GC options.

Animation

They still put up the bridge even though no audience members walk across it anymore due to covid. Dunno why. It’s not like there’s not enough to look at without it, and it’s a little odd because there’s nothing for anyone to cross over anyway - it’s just there. Whatev.

I never cared about the little robot helpers but for some reason found them very cute this time. Endearing sweeping technique lol

The three scientists scurrying around were cute and unobtrusive - they read like something you might notice as an audience member, but might not if you were distracted. It made them feel like a cute little extra.

Opening

Train sequence is as cute as ever but W H E R E was Chanteuse de Rue?? I was immediately panicked that she might be out. Turns out no, we must have had a backup - there was plainly a live singer with the band, but she never emerged for the entire show, not even for the curtain call. I could only think she just knew the songs but hadn’t yet learned the character’s blocking. She was phenomenal so not a total loss but.. :( I love Chanteuse.

Sidebar for show music overall: fine. I’m not a massive fan of any of them - at best they’re fun, and at worst they’re happening.

Backup Seeker as well (a theme for the evening), quite a bit younger than ones I’ve seen in the past. I just do not care about this character, I’m sorry. I don’t even know why he’s there. He’s like a half-hearted foil for the audience, like Cirque realized they should probably make sure this cabinet des curiosités belongs to someone. I don’t agree. All he really does is add a sense of “WOW isn’t this weird???”, which is a conclusion the audience can and does draw on its own, and it would be a more effective show without him.

Chaos Synchro 1900

Never in history has this act not been fun. The song is great, the stage is chaotic and full, and it sets the perfect tone for the show to follow. We had an excellent audience that was really responsive from the get-go, particularly for the suspended juggling.

Bella Donna backup :((( No singing, no percussion, just looking perfect. I can live with that I suppose, if I MUST.

Chinese Pole

I was initially bummed that this was still in because Russian cradle was my favorite act of the show, but MAN am I glad I got a chance to see this solo.

I’ve never seen a Chinese pole act this energetic. It was relentless. Fluid, flawless drops, never a pause in the action, and just trick after trick that had the crowd losing its shit.

This was probably the crowd favorite of the night, the response was amazing.

Aerial Bicycle

I don’t care for this act to an almost aggressive point. Like, it’s weird that I dislike this act so much and I should just chill out.

It has all the trappings of a quality act. Unique. Fun song. Cute costume. Inventive as hell. But the difficulty isn’t very high - the main draw is the apparatus, not the artist on it, and once you notice that it’s very hard to ignore.

I think I get annoyed with it because it reminds me of every complaint about the show overall. Flashy, unique, empty.

Invisible Circus

We had Thomas in for Facundo tonight which was a treat! Hadn’t seen him since Volta.

He’s a WAY better physical actor than I expected!! More muted than Facundo, but I think at times that made his character much more appealing and approachable. Facundo’s clown is pretty off-putting by design, but Thomas’ was mostly endearing. I think he did an excellent job filling in, better than I’ve ever seen for a clown understudy.

Contortion

lol @ me bitching about Kooza never updating its contortion choreography because I hope Kurios’ never never changes theirs

I love this act, it’s so electric and energetic. They embody their costumes perfectly. One of them fell out of a handstand (weirdly I don’t think I’ve ever seen that from Cirque, even after all these years!) but it was nearly impossible to notice.

Crowd loved ‘em. I think they’re immune to many crowds’ reactions of “omg stop doesn’t that hurt” because they’re so perfectly eel-like.

Chair Balancing/Upside Down World

Kooza’s chair balancing act - from a discipline standpoint - is much much more difficult and impressive.

Rola Bola

I always love this act, it’s always so stressful

Audience lost its shit

I really really like that in the beginning the Aviator is taking a woman on a pleasant little joyride, and when it’s over and they land he hands her over to what is very clearly her husband. Makes me think that character takes anyone who asks, just for the joy of watching them experience flight :’)

(See this is the shit I’m talking about, there should be MORE of that depth in Kurios, and instead this is like the only moment you think the characters might have internal lives beyond what we see onstage)

Acro Net

Always fun! Partly because it’s amazing to watch but also because there is no denying the entire team is having a BLAST every single time they perform.

The whole team adopted this little habit of flipping their frilly hip fins whenever they could, which I don’t remember from prior viewings. Cute little detail.

The Seeker participated in this act since he was a backup and that was great. He made a point of looking sloppier than the other artists, like he’d just been dumped in with them and was just trying to keep up. Nice detail.

Clown Moment

I don’t have a problem with this act - even Facundo’s version - though I get why people do. idk I just give clowns leeway. A lot of the jokes are offcolor, but they’re always at the clown’s expense, never the woman’s. The line remains very clearly and firmly drawn.

More great physical comedy from Thomas.

Aerial Straps

Formerly the worst straps act in Cirque but NO LONGER! There are updated costumes and choreography and I am pleased to report that this act is now bonkers.

Yo-Yos

Usually rola bola is my fave, but this was my favorite act of the night. Love the artist, love the pace, love the costume, love it all. Everything about it is the perfect match for the show’s setting.

One drop (maybe two??) but literally who could possibly care, this act is so amazing

Departures/Hand Puppetry

In the past I haven’t cared for this moment - cute and inventive but with a side of “why is this happening.” NOT tonight.

I couldn’t say what has changed but something has. It was beautiful and captivating and honest. It felt like a fleeting glance at the soul of the show, and it’s a shame that’s not on display throughout.

CJ magic. Don’t have to go into it. But watching this happen for him is one of my favorite recent Cirque memories. It was really, really special to witness.

Banquine

I zoned out for this act I’m sorry

It’s just Happening with no clear reason why or with whom and it’s fun and upbeat but blech. Compared to Zed or Quidam, this act says nothing. And after the emotion of Departures it’s like flipping a switch back to “haha kidding there’s no content here.” Taps the same nerve as aerial bicycle for me.

I guess it’s a good finale act in that it’s big and has lots of action but that’s about it. I don’t find the skill level particularly high compared to other banquine acts out there.

Finale

MAN do I love a group dance. Always a cute celebration of the journey we’ve just taken, and a fun who’s who of all the crazy characters we’ve met.

Cut. The. Seeker. Please. The empty suitcase thing is so hollow, like we get it, the real curiosities were the friends we made along the way. Highlighting it so obviously makes it so much less effective.

I don’t think Kurios suffers from the same “1.5x speed” sense that Kooza does right now. Maybe it’s a tighter show transition to transition, maybe you don’t notice because the whole theme is “everything all at once always,” but either way it felt like just the right pace throughout.

Chanteuse I still miss you :( Wish she’d taken her bow.

And that’s all! This weekend I’m back up in Montreal which means another crack at Kooza which means another opportunity to emotionally crumble under a big top. Can’t wait!!

the wild adventures that worldbuilding for your story sends you on:

odette's favorite food is hamburgers. so i had to figure out why they would be called "burgers" in her fantasy world and i decided that i'd name them after their inventor, stephen burger, who came from a long line of burgers, i.e. people who built and maintained the fortifications around walled cities

likewise, i made leandra's favorite drink an equal parts mixture of gin, campari, and sweet vermouth, i.e. a negroni, named after the french general pascal-olivier de negroni. because that's my favorite drink. though the infusions that give campari and thus the negroni its distinct bitter orange flavor are a trade secret there's pretty obviously some orange and maybe tangerine in there. so where in this fantasy world do the oranges come from? well what if house adalhart's territory is renowned for its orange groves and an orange liqueur that is exactly identical to campari is a luxury good associated with the adalhart bloodline, and so leandra's affinity for that cocktail represents her attachment to her family?

anyway house adalhart is well known for having the most extensive and well-stocked liquor cabinet in the empire and leandra keeps a magical portal to t h e l i q u o r d i m e n s i o n in her dorm room so she can always have a piece of home at arm's reach

Le décret n° 2024-51 du 30 janvier 2024 crée un nouveau corps des ingénieurs en chef hospitaliers. Il prévoit les modalités de recrutement, d'avancement et les dispositions relatives à la constitution initiale du corps. Il fait converger la carrière des ingénieurs en chef hospitaliers vers celle des ingénieurs des deux autres versants de la fonction publique et notamment celle des ingénieurs en chef territoriaux. Il prévoit également les dispositions applicables à l'emploi d'ingénieur général.
