THINGS I WISH I KNEW WHEN I WAS GETTING STARTED WITH THE LAW OF ASSUMPTION (AS SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN MANIFESTING FOR 5 YEARS)
1. the law of assumption is personal. considering how we have different sets of experiences, different environments, different upbringings, and even different languages, we have different assumptions.
because of this, we are affected by teachings and success stories differently. it's important to note this since a lot of manifestation coaches will teach you about the law in a way that worked for them (and the others they may have taught) but it's possible that their advice (even my own) may not be the best for you. even abdullah and neville goddard, two of the people who are known to start this discipline, may have ancient or varied belief systems and techniques. this is normal considering the world they lived in before is different from the world we live in now.
although, you should still read on abdullah and neville because they will teach you the basics and they will help you understand the foundations of the law.
as an example, you might manifest your dream career faster with simple affirmation techniques but a coach may have taught you to focus on visualization techniques.
even the idea that "dominant THOUGHTS manifest" or "what you BELIEVE in manifests" is entirely up to you.
note: notice how i said "may not be the best for you" instead of "may not work for you". any technique can, does, and will work.
how i learned this: when i was learning about the law, i mainly focused on neville's teachings because he was one of the most prominent figures in the practice. and though i liked his practical techniques (especially mental diet and inner conversations), there were some beliefs that i do not agree with e.g. divine timing, appointed hour, avoiding "does not" "is not" "will not".
when i was going through sammy ingrams' takes, she said that it's better to have concise affirmations/short list (non-verbatim) than a long list of 25+ affirmations. but going through affirmations without being specific about them doesn't personally resonate with me and that's just because i'm a detail-oriented person (also a writer).
what i can advise:
learn about different approaches
a. through scientific concepts. e.g. quantum physics, reticular activating system, cognitive reframing, cognitive behavioral therapy, the psychology of placebo effect, the psychology of affirmations, Baader-Meinhof phenomenon (a.k.a. the psychology of self-fulfilling prophecy)
b. through religious and/or spiritual concepts. e.g. passages from the Bible, passages from the Quran, deity work, spells and rituals
c. through self-development. e.g. identity-based habit
start the practice with an identity you like in the present or an identity that you resonate with (learning style, talents, interests, etc.)
examples:
-visual learner = vision boards
-loves writing = scripting
-words of affection love language = affirmations
take teachings with a grain of salt. do not limit yourself and do not allow other people to limit you. experiment with concepts, ideas, and techniques, and have fun with them.
2. techniques are only reminders. you are manifesting either by thinking, feeling, or acting out your desires. you are manifesting every second of the day either with your thoughts, emotions, or by embodying a state. you are only being intentional when you anchor techniques.
note: it is true that your dominant thoughts manifest. it is also true that what you believe in manifests, the same way that your inner knowing manifests. BUT these ideas are meant to empower you. they are meant to remind you that manifestation is as easy as thinking, feeling, acting, believing, understanding, deciding, etc. if an idea doesn't feel good to you, it doesn't have to be an ultimate truth you embrace and carry on with. this is the same with techniques.
what i can advise:
choose one technique and practice it for 7 to 21 days. it can be mental diet, affirmation tapes, sats, mind movies, etc. as long as you can persist with it. give it time. give it time. give it time. in other aspects of the world, you give change some time. when you're calcium deficient and you decide to drink calcium supplements, you realize that it's counterproductive to ask "why am i still calcium deficient?" as soon as you start your regimen because you know your body is changing with the supplement and you put your trust into it. after all, why would you choose a supplement you have no faith on? you just give it time.
note: you can still manifest changes to be instant. you can affirm "i am seeing results now", "results come immediately", "my manifestation is quick". the amount of time you're using a technique does not equate to the amount of time your results will come.
the reason why i encourage you to practice for maximum 21 days is so you can fully explore and master the technique you chose. with the abundance of topics and methods discussed in social media, switching and trying new things is tempting. now, there is nothing wrong with this. it's just that, you wouldn't be able to take a step back and reflect on what worked and what takes more effort when you change techniques every so often.
try a technique that is popularized in the media. a lot of the times, the reason why this technique gained traction is either because it's simple or because it has worked for a lot of people. now, here's the thing: if said technique wasn't for you, at least you can say "oh this is a tiktok/twitter/youtube/old/beginner technique, there are other techniques out there" and you can try another technique with less resistance. but, if it did work, then it did. congratulations.
you can invent your own. here are some techniques that i invented throughout the years.
a. "name is set and solid with the fact that..." - works amazing for sp, getting people to commit, getting people to pursue you
b. "okay! manifestation powers go brrr!" - funny but i do this when I'm spiraling; it also helps me surrender doubts and i think it's because it's so simple and unserious lmao
you can combine them. for example, you want to do sats but you cannot hold a vision for long, what you can do is montage photos or videos that is similar to the vision you want to manifest. you can also have affirmation tapes running in the background.
3. "concept" work can be such a banger. assumptions are basically the conception about the world, about yourself, about the people around you. hence, when you manifest and apply the law of assumption, you change or reinforce a conception.
these can be done through:
self-concept
what it is: your awareness about yourself; the way you perceive yourself.
how you can apply it: there are multiple ways to establish your self-concept but the best way, is to start reinforcing the universal truth: that you are inherently worthy. you deserve money and resources because you are worthy. you deserve love because you are worthy. you deserve ease because you are worthy.
other ways to grow your self-concept is celebrating the identities you have within yourself that you like e.g. that you are strong, you are disciplined, you are beautiful. be careful about strongly tying yourself into these identities though because these are not the reasons why you shall receive. again, you shall receive because you are inherently worthy.
why it works: by having a strong self-concept, you develop ease. you are less likely to rationalize or question the law or why you deserve the things you're asking for. and as you may think, rationalizing may be a form of resistance. questioning may be a form of resistance.
one of the ways i have seen this is when people receive incentives from work, instead of just receiving or saying "thank you", they say things like "what have i done to receive this?", sometimes completely rejecting this gift because of fear that they might lose something when they receive. this can be an example of a weak self-concept. consequently, the company starts questioning "did my employer really do enough to receive this?".
on the other hand, someone with a strong self-concept can take this incentive and buy the things they like because they know they deserve it. they can also take this incentive and say to themselves "oh it's because i worked hard these past few days". it's the knowing and confidence they have within themselves that everything around them has no other option but to recognize.
conception of other things (e.g. of love, of money, of a specific person)
you can work on your conception of other things the same way you work on your self-concept: choosing a narrative that is uplifting to you.
in case you have resistance to a specific object, you can also listen to people's success stories to start shifting to a more positive and desirable perception. one of the ways i do this is by going back to abdullah and neville's story. these two men lived at difficult times, through difficult eras, yet they manifested their desires. they managed to let go of the 3D.
4. practice some distance as you're starting. you were exposed to a different life before the law, it's only normal and human to have doubts or spiral once in a while. however, when you set distance on things that do not help you embody the state, you set distance on things that will feed your doubts and spiraling.
for example, if you're shifting to a state of wealth and you're affirming "i have 1,000 dollars". it's unhelpful and opposing to be constantly surrounded by someone else saying "you only have 10 dollars".
now, i do understand that not everyone can do this right away because of circumstances. but PLEASE do whatever you can to set this distance. find a voice to reinstate your truth.
a personal story, i am an asian girl living with a grandmother who was pessimistic about love because her two children (my mom and my aunt) struggled with it. because of this, she used to constantly remind me of how love is difficult. i didn't know this at the time, but this created a set of beliefs in my head. consequently, as a teenager, i only seeked and allowed love which was difficult because that was all i've ever known. that was all my assumption.
but around the pandemic, i went back to the countryside with my dad where i had a lot of time on my own. this was when i got deep into new-age spirituality and did shadow work. from here, i realized: this is not my assumption about love. before my parents broke up, my assumption was that love is easy. you only have to make the other person laugh. when i was busy in school and would spend most of the time at my friend's house, my assumption was that love is support and light. i started to get these epiphanies that a lot of my pessimistic perception was because of someone i was constantly surrounded with and that i have to build new assumptions.
but around august 2020, i have to go back to the city with my grandmom. i was afraid of the toll i might get into when i got back. however, because i already practiced distance and understood what are the assumptions that serve me, what are the assumptions that i want, i was more at peace. i listed down affirmations about myself, about love, about money, about being "deserving".
after this, every time she told me what love was, i can stop her and say no. i can tell her that it's not the universal truth, and certainly not mine. along the way, i started manifesting that she believes love is easy and supportive. i started manifesting that she believes i deserve love that is soft and tender.
then, when i got into my relationship, she was nothing but happy and supportive.
other ways i have practiced distance while manifesting:
unfollowing content creators who normalized hating men.
unfollowing content creators who were shady and negative about relationships.
unfriending highschool guy friends who do not make me feel safe about men.
unfriending relatives who make unnecessary comments about my looks, my studies, my relationship, and my earnings.
unfollowing girls who made me feel bad about also liking girls.
unfollowing manifestation gurus who romanticize struggles because "the more you struggle, the more you get blessed"
unfollowing manifestation gurus who say stuff like "if you want money, you have to take action to deserve it. not just manifesting"
now, you can totally manifest these people to change and be better, as long as it will make you feel good.
that's all i can share today (since this post is already getting long). i hope you learned a thing or two. thank you so much for reading. i love you and i appreciate you !

I'm doing a College class on Ancient Foods. My focus is on Honey like the different recipes and usages in Medieval era. I found like a couple recipes, a thing on religious relation ("Milk and Honey of Paradise") /Crusades, medicinal use, and possibly bees/beeswax because I was struggling to get something.
Y'all have any recommendations?
(I've brought Zoe in on this one; the following is a collaborative effort. Also I'm assuming you have access to your university library so you can get ahold of the cited material below quickly and for free.)
Can you include beverages? Honey is the main ingredient in mead, which should give you a lot to talk about. Susan Verberg is the premier researcher on medieval mead, and has some excellent works on both mead making and honey production. She has a website at https://medievalmeadandbeer.wordpress.com/ where you can find both her formal publications and her blog.
If you do want to talk about beverages, there were other medieval drinks that used honey. Some citations for you:
Breeze, Andrew. “What Was ‘Welsh Ale' in Anglo-Saxon England?” Neophilologus, vol. 88, no. 2, 2004, pp. 299–301.
Fell, Christine E. “Old English ‘Beor’." Leeds Studies in English, vol. 8, 1975, pp. 76-95.
You can also go into cultural symbolism; here are a couple on that:
Enright, Michael J. Lady with a Mead Cup: Ritual, Prophecy, and Lordship in the European Warband from La Tène to the Viking Age. Four Courts Press, 2013.
Rowland, Jenny. “OE Ealuscerwen/Meoduscerwen and the Concept of ‘Paying for Mead'." Leeds Studies in English, vol. 21, 1990, pp. 1-12.
Also you might want to look into the general concept of the "mead of poetry" from the Old Norse sources. You can find the origin story for that in the Prose Edda, I believe.
Definitely check out https://www.foodtimeline.org for recipes with honey during the period - they have more than you'd expect. There's also a few medieval cookbooks you can parse through. Here's an online one you can sort through that does a great job modernizing the translations: https://www.medievalcookery.com/etexts.html
As for honey itself -- there's actually quite a bit of research on that! Honey was quite a specialized trade, and most of the medieval world used it for sweetener, so there's a good amount of research.
A few leads:
honey as an alternative to sugar, which was expensive, imported, and could indicate class
honey grading: honey was graded based on location/provenance, type (lavender, orange blossom, etc.), and also by grade. However, their method of grading was very different to our modern one.
honey as a preservative, not just for flavor
Articles on this subject:
(DEFINITELY this one!!) Fava, Lluis Sales, et al. “Beekeeping in Late Medieval Europe: A Survey of Its Ecological Settings and Social Impacts.” Anales de La Universidad de Alicante. Historia Medieval, no. 22, 2021, pp. 275-96, https://doi.org/10.14198/medieval.19671.
Wallace-Hare, David, editor. New Approaches to the Archaeology of Beekeeping. Archaeopress, 2022. JSTOR, https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv2b07txd.
Verberg, Susan. “Of Hony: A Collection of Mediaeval Brewing Recipes for Mead, Metheglin, Braggot, Hippocras &c. — Including how to Process Honey — from the 1600s and Earlier,” 2017. Academia.edu.
If you want to look more into the medicinal usage, Cockayne's Leechdoms, Wortcunning, & Starcraft collects all the medical & scientific texts of the Old English period. It's old enough to be public domain, so it's available on the Internet Archive and HathiTrust in searchable form, meaning you can just ctrl-F "honey" and see what comes up.
Let us know how it goes!

So, what are you and your friends' thoughts regarding Personas 1 and 2? And honestly, you can be as critical and as brutal in your replies as needed.
I can only speak for myself, but I'm very fond of both. The original has this really distinct, lugubrious atmosphere propelled largely by the music of Aoki, Okibe et al. It's a huge shame that English-speaking players are forced to choose between a version with an infamously compromised localization and a more approachable one that eradicates the aural identify of the original game.
Tumblr media
I have a ton of affection for this era of Kaneko art as well. You can tell he was having a lot of fun using then-contemporary celebrities as references for the character designs; there was a certain facial idiosyncrasy that would be lost as he settled into his more distinctive, modern style. Also a big fan of the lanky, expressive sprites in both games- it's such a rarely deployed idiom.
The battle positioning and diffuse exp acquisition go a long way to diminish any satisfaction there might be in the battle mechanics, but I do appreciate the oddly terse dungeon design, which feels like a complete outlier among the first-person dungeon crawlers in the series.
Tumblr media
I'll have more to say about the P2 duology once we revisit it for the stream, but I think these games are really singular. EP in particular has what I would consider the platonic ideal for character portraits in this style. Super eclectic, tons of heft to the construction, and clearly a lot of care invested in every expression. An early peak for this representational mode in the series.
The dungeons are kind of wretched. Brutal encounter rate, and these huge, nothing rat mazes that feel completely divorced from the urban structures they're intended to represent. Record stores do not look like that, they are in fact very small! Fuck off!!! The combat is functional but basically frictionless. Best negotiation dialogue in the series.
Tumblr media
One thing that I love, and this is present to a lesser extent in P1 as well, is the way your party members will populate the various stores, shrines, parks etc. There's like 50 of these fucking places, and every new plot flag refreshes the dialogue for each character. They easily could have written so many variations of "Hey, are you sure we should be wasting time here instead of heading to (next plot destination)?", but almost every interaction is full of fun character-building moments that would otherwise have no place within the urgency of the narrative. I think this superabundance of tertiary dialogue is actually very charming when engaging with it is left to your discretion.
But most importantly, it's the perfect capstone to the fin de siecle obsession with the occult in Japanese pop culture as it had manifested in the previous two decades. The games throw absolutely everything into the equation- alien spaceships, divination, ancient prophecies, the NWO conspiracy, Lovecraft, the fucking Dan Brown Hitler subplot- everything was on the table. It's this fantastic summation of the Nostradamus/Y2K/Millenial zeitgeist of 1999, and just a great outlet for that sheer, Okada-Kaneko-propelled creativity. The modern games are incredibly anodyne in comparison.
hope all my guido guys out there enjoyed this post and no one scrolled past it b/c they thought I wrote fucking 7 paragraphs about kandori

The bloodmoon is actually pretty tbh

PROPAGANDA
Xander Harris
ok look he isnt perfect. but hes consistently lumped in with the "did everything wrong" category when (a) he is literally just a normal guy who cares about his friends, (b) EVERYTHING super shitty about him is due to either 1) his character arc, or 2) the writer deciding to project on him, and (c) he probably hates buffy dating vampires for valid reasons, like how his friend was killed IN EPISODE ONE by a vampire and *xander* staked him. like for example i cannot stress enough how the early seasons misogyny sucks and is gross, BUT is part of his character arc and is a thing he grows out of! plus as a kid who had a shitty home life and was bullied, and also wasnt super special in any way, he is intensely relatable because he is the "just some guy" of buffy. except his story shows that you dont have to be powerful or fulfil ancient prophecies or anything to be needed. ("its okay to be just some guy" - btvs) he defeats a villain with the pure power of friendship! basically xander harris deserves better and DEFINITELY didnt do everything wrong
Princess Bubblegum
"PB isn't evil but she uses a political system that can be easily turned oppressive under the wrong ruler (dictatorship)". She is highly morally grey and willing to assume the mantle of a warlord if provoked. All her family and even her offspring Goliad are at LEAST morally grey, with many being straight up evil. The candy people are arguably made stupid on purpose... eugenics? Also her right hand man Peppermint Butler is OBSESSED with dark magic and practices it adeptly.

A word vomit of GO consciousness that will make the barest scintilla of sense BUT hear me out
1.
Are we 100% convinced that Agnes Nutter and her freaky-deaky prophecies are not going to make an appearance in S2? I realise Anathema burnt them in an excellent moment of character self-revelation but the whole "Ye Saga Continues" seemed rather ominous, far too ominous that it would be forgotten about? Can we be sure that she did have a wee skim of any that would be majorly important, and make a note of them for future reference? Send it on to Aziraphale in his bookshop (because you must be JOKING if you think I don't believe those two are now firm penpals)
2.
Speaking of future reference, others have put it out there and something in me agrees and wishes to reiterate: the parallel of Nina/Maggie alongside Crowley/Aziraphale seems just as important as the specific presence of Nina/Maggie themselves... Does Agnes put out a prophecy that refers to a couple specifically in Soho? And C/A in their infinite and ancient wisdom think it refers to that cute lady couple across the road?
3.
OR, separate thought on Nina/Maggie, in the Crowley Summons Force Lightning Scene™, presuming it hasn't been cut especially different to the actual scene, we see Nina and Maggie in the coffeeshop when Crowley summons lightning... And that lightning hits the shop... So, not necessarily worrying about why had a meteorological temper tantrum, but what was the effect that that lightning had on the ladies in the shop? And is that actually the start of them becoming involved in the story?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.
I'm 100% convinced that Amnesiac!Gabriel is not even one of, let alone the main storyline. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Gabriel disappearance barely spans more than, say, two episodes. I feel somewhat (don't @ me) that the storyline is a little bit glib and a bit... shallow? Which, given NG has an Intellect We Shalt Never Comprehend, leads me to believe it is a vaguely rose-pink herring and that for the purpose of the trailer and not spoiling anything actually pertinent to the main story arc, they have deliberately centred the trailer on a pretty funny skit that, going by general continuity of the clips used in the trailer, only really lasts a short time and will provide the segue to the main story...? Imho, it's a bit of a downgrade for a story to originally focus on the contextual morality and mechanics of Despatching the Antichrist, to... well.
5.
RESURRECTIONIST PUB. This is the bit I'm really looking forward to, especially now we've had a sneak peak of the article that presumably gets Aziraphale's attention (the Jukebox Jeopardy). I've put it in another post half-jokingly, but this is the same kind of magic (unsure of the nomenclature regrettably) that presumably affects the Bentley. My understanding for the rationale behind the mystical haunting à la Bentley, and it's been a while since I read the book so might have this completely wrong, is that through exposure to Crowley, it is affected by Crowley's demonic influences... Nothing awful, but has absorbed enough to have adopted the Queen-obsessed IDGAF attitude.
It would therefore stand to reason that the jukebox is being effectively influenced by a demon in a similar way....? So, with that in mind, what if (and it's a leap, I grant you):
-Gabriel gets kidnapped by demons, God only knows why (and probably orchestrated the bloody hoohah)
-Gabriel escapes/demons forget to lock the door/cast a spell on him and send him off bollock-naked unto the misty London night
-Heaven eventually track down Gabriel at the shop, and possibly enlist Az and Crowley to help them find whoever did this to Gabe (for a good ole-fashioned Retribution)
-They track them down through various news articles (which, let's face it, is very Witchfinder Army of them, I'm proud), but especially one that leads them to the Resurrectionist pub and its Jukebox?
QED: Think it's a little coincidental that one perceives a Bentley and a jukebox with the exact same symptoms, potentially instigated by long-term exposure to a hell-raising demon, and not conclude as being tangentially related
6.
This is kinda related to the above but not really and I have no idea what I'm trying to get at, but one thing I noted in the Con panel audio clip of Muriel and Aziraphale is that Az... Doesn't really seem surprised by Muriel being there? Like, sure, she's not a Horrible Boss Archangel, but he almost seems immediately... affable, to this random angel just appearing at his shop, in full white Met Police kit, talking like they possessed an original Bow Street Runner...?
Cmon, he obviously knows straight away what they are and why they're there, but he just seems so... Calm, about it all? Not one bit anxious, not one bit worried that they're there to spy on him? Almost definitely on orders from Heaven? Who, whilst Az has broken away from them, could still very well destroy him or, worse (?), put him on the one way train to Falling? So what I'm trying to say I guess (honestly I'm not even sure) is that - have Az and Crowley actually been seeing more and more angels/demons coming to Earth for a lil vacation? Have taken a metaphorical leaf out of their book, and decided to find out if Earth truly does Slap?
I no doubt will continue to add to this but in the meantime I will proceed to scream into the abyss in the hope that an echo bounces back and metamorphoses into an Intelligent Thought™, such is my preferred form of meditation
Ciao for now~

Dream dragon AU by milder-manners (check it out, there is good world-building, beautiful concepts and just as nice strip pannels drawn by them) theory
Okay, I'm going to try my hand here because I'm not sure how much people will think it's spoilers if I ask but I still want to get it out. This is more a jumble of thoughts than a true theory about what will happen
First, there is the (to me at least*) open secret that Dream is the white dragon since the first pannel and the prophecy implies he will tranform himself sooner or later (but can he already ?)
Dragons hybrids can shapeshift (thanks to vow this is now a fact (aka, her being a human silhouette then having a large tail in Dream's flashbacks) + the author confirming that some magical beings can shapeshift)... but it also said it's something you have to train for, even if genetical grounds matter a lot. So is that why Dream try to steal the End info, to power up his own strength ? Is it for himself, as dragons- nature can makes them want to hoard knowledge (on that note, is that the same motivation than vow ?) or is it to be able to get revenge (especially since we now know for sure he comes from Deepheart's capital)
Which brings me to a second theory : Dream's presence in Deepheart (2 things)
1. Magic : Wardens seemed very careful about who could learn the death magic. It seems logical than only a very few can learn it, aka the Ancient Council. I doubt another hybrid than warden (especially a cow hybrid since they aren't supposed to have magic) would be invited to learn it. Was Dream ever interested in this if he likes hoarding knowledge ? Could he try to study it even if his magic doesn't resonate with it ? Or maybe it's just a coincidence and he never had an interest in this kind of stuff (but ok, I'll admit the dsmp impacted my theory with c!dream and all that. Idk how much it ties into pure warden lore. But the death link is there and I don't want to close the door on this too quickly)
2. Growing up - dream's parents and heritage.
I want to be clear I may be wrong and the author may want to take us in a very different direction, but the white horns, the prophecy, the fact Dream is fireproof and that usually when you follow a guy you know is the hero and makes himself pass for a prey hybrid... all those makes me 99% sure about what Dream is supposed to be.
Where it's interesting is that dragons hybrids are rare, and that it's genetics that make an hybrid. So Dream's parents should be dragons hybrids too : what were they doing in Deepheart and why didn't they survive ? It may be that they weren't lucky genetically and weren't fireproof, or died from buildings falls, but maybe they weren't even there, Dream already alone at that age. Tried to know a bit more about dragons habits with their kids but seems like I was too sneaky with my formulation :')
Anyway. If Dream had parents keeping him safe, what were they doing in Deepheart ? Were they interested in magic too or trying to live a normal life (possible, but uncertain seeing how they are characterized so far). If his parents weren't there : why is Dream there, has he been left there voluntarily ? Why Deepheart especially if the Empire seems interested in the End, he would have been more in his place there. Unless his parents didn't know he was a dragon hybrid (which, they could both had recessive dragon genes which could explain the whiteness).
It could be an easy plot point where the author just needed a town to put Dream in that the Empire would attack but I think they wouldn't mention sculk magic that way and the importance of Deepheart if there wasn't more to find.
...I feel like an old crazy geeze trying to analyse this lmao, feel free to interract if you have more ideas to explore or points you disagree with

“God exemplified his wisdom in not endorsing any of man’s cosmologies in his Word. If God had done otherwise, it would have needlessly exposed the Bible to ridicule in nearly every age, for man’s cosmologies have changed continually over time.”
-Dr. Danny R. Faulkner, The Book of Enoch and the Flat Earth
"The various enactments of the law, moral and ritual, were written on the heavenly tablets (iii. 31, vi. 17, &c.) and revealed to man through the mediation of angels (i. 27). This conception of the law, as I have already pointed out, made prophecy impossible unless under the guise of pseudonymity. Since the law was the ultimate and complete expression of absolute truth, there was no room for any further revelation: much less could any such revelation, were it conceivable, supersede a single jot or tittle of the law as already revealed. This is exactly the view of the Rabbinic scholars. Thus they taught that whereas the Prophets and Hagiographa will in the future cease to be, for there is nothing in them which is not suggested." "[Apocalyptic literature] has been always pseudonymous from the third century B.C. onwards. This pseudonymity was due to the absolute supremacy of the Law, which left no room for prophecy." "God had, according to the official teachers of the Church, spoken His last and final word through the Law, and when the hope was expressed that in the coming age a prophet will arise, he was only conceived as one whose task was to decide questions of ritual or priestly succession, or legal interpretation in accordance with the Law. Thus in 1 Mace. iv. 46 the stones of the defiled altar of burnt-offering were to be put aside till a prophet arose, and similarly in xiv. 41 (cf. ix. 27) the high-priesthood of Simon was to be provisionally acknowledged till a prophet arose, who could decide on the validity of his high-priesthood. Accordingly the first fact we are to recognize is, that from the time of Ezra and Nehemiah the Law has not only assumed the functions of the ancient pre-Exilic prophets, but it has also, so far as it lay in its power, made the revival of such prophecy an impossibility. The prophet who issued a prophecy under his own name after the time of Ezra and Nehemiah could not expect a hearing unless his prophecy had the imprimatur of the Law."
"It is now clear, I think, that from Nehemiah’s time onward prophecy could not gain a hearing, whether the prophecy was genuine—that is, appeared under the name of its actual author—or was anonymous, unless it was acceptable in the eyes of the Law. From the class of genuine and anonymous works we pass on to the third division, the pseudonymous, There are at all events two of them in the Old Testament, Ecclesiastes and Daniel. With the former we have here no concern. But how are we to explain the pseudonymity of Daniel and the other apocalyptic works of the second century B.C., such as Enoch, Jubilees, and the Testaments of the XII Patriarchs? This pseudonymity has already in part been explained. These apocalyptists do not merely repeat the old truths, which in so many cases had become the mere shibboleths of a petrified orthodoxy, they not only challenged many of the orthodox views of the time and condemned them, but they also carried [more truths;] according to Zech. xiii. 1-5 (a late work written from the priestly standpoint), if a man declared himself to be a prophet his father and his mother were to put him to death. By such drastic measures prophecy was driven forth[...] and has never since been suffered to return. The task of leading the people into more spiritual conceptions, alike as regards the present life and that which is to come, devolved henceforth [to the pseudonymous apocalyptic]."

Re.Gray 027 - Suspicion

[ Masterlist ] [ Read on AO3 ] [ Raws ]
Summary: Bookman and Lavi introduce themselves, and tell us a bit about the Noah. Allen goes for an ill-advised walk.
C H A R A C T E R S
Allen Walker Lavi Komui Lee Lenalee Lee Bookman The Millennium Earl Arystar Krory Eliade
S T O R Y
It all began about a hundred years ago, with the discovery of a single Cube.
The substance it was made of, God-crystal (also known as "Innocence"), was imbued with a strange power. Inscribed upon it was an apocalyptic prophecy from an ancient civilization, as well as instructions for the handling of said substance.
7000 years ago, those who inscribed the Cube bore Innocence into battle against the Millennium Earl and his demonic cohort, and were eventually victorious. However, as written in the Biblical tale of Noah and the Flood, the world was then destroyed.
To prevent the recurrence of this apocalypse, nicknamed the "Three Days of Darkness", Exorcists — Accommodators chosen by the Innocence — join the battle against the Millennium Earl.
In the phenomenon-stricken Rewinding Town, Allen clashed with Road Kamelot, a girl who called herself a member of the "Noah clan". But she vanished, leaving many unanswered questions in her wake....
What orders will the Black Order give Allen and his compatriots next?

LAVI
As a Bookman successor, he cast off his real name at the beginning of his journey.
His true nationality is also unknown; he's the product of many mingling bloodlines.7
18 years old Height: 177cm, 5'9 ½ Weight: 68kg, 150lbs Birthday: August 10th Leo, blood type O
Lavi wasn't originally a D.Gray character, but the protagonist of an entirely different story called "BOOK-MAN". I'm very fond of him, and delighted that I finally get to introduce him here. The Bookmen, archivists of underhistory, and their successor, Lavi, may now become integral key figures in the story of D.Gray.
Someday (if this doesn't get cancelled) I'll show you why he wears that eyepatch, so stick around.

FOOTNOTES
奇怪 kikai "strange, mysterious, weird" is the same word used to describe Innocence phenomenon, though it's unlikely that Allen's Innocence has any hand in healing his cursed eye. If anything, it might be the opposite: something Dark-Matterish about Mana's curse. [ ♠ ]
我らは ブックマーンと呼ばれる相の者 warera wa "Bookman" to yobareru saga no mono, "we are those with the nature/destiny to be called Bookmen"
There's something really difficult to translate here: that word saga refers to "nature" in the sense of "human nature", or "destiny" in the sense of "biological destiny".
"Bookman nature" obliges them on a fundamental level to fill a particular role in the world, and it's almost certainly something they're born with, something inherent to them. [ ♠ ]
Hahaha, he just comes right out and says it: he and Lavi chose to become Exorcists for Bookman reasons.
I've theorized before that Bookmen are able to jailbreak Innocence and Dark Matter at will so they can position themselves ideally as observers (and, relatedly, that Cross was able to jailbreak Chomesuke and prevent himself from Falling because he's the "lost successor").
This line makes it pretty clear that Innocence didn't really choose Bookman and Lavi as Accommodators; Bookman and Lavi co-opted it so they could be in the field as Exorcists. I assume they have backdoor hacks enabling them to be wherever they need or want to be because they're not exactly participants in the "simulation", but something more like dev or tester avatars, coming in from "outside the framework" to make error logs and bug reports. [ ♠ ]
無根 mukon "groundless, baseless, rootless". I think this actually means something like sourceless in this context: nobody can figure out where they came from, where they originated. They're just there, out of nowhere.
Also: 裏歴史 urarekishi describes a "hidden, unilluminated, unseen, behind the scenes" history, the history beneath or behind known history. I plan to translate it pretty consistently as either "behind the scenes" or "underhistory", depending on sentence structure and context. [ ♠ ]
This is almost exactly what Lero said to Road when it was scolding her about sharing Noah secrets with outsiders. Lero and Bookman insist on secrecy; Road and Lavi don't see the harm in spicing things up a bit. Parallels! [ ♠ ]
As I recall, the next and only person to call him that is Chomesuke, the aforementioned jailbroken Akuma. Which means the "some [people]" here refers to Cross, who hasn't been back to HQ since before Bookman and Lavi joined up. Early hint that Cross and the Bookmen are acquainted, and not through the Order. [ ♠ ]
様々な異種族の血を引く samazama na ishuzoku no chi wo hiku "descended from the blood of a variety of interracial matches"
Weird line that could either just mean he's a bit of a melting-pot, a mixed-race kid born to mixed-race parents, or mean that he's the product of a deliberate breeding program of some kind (which, yikes). [ ♠ ]

INCIDENT REPORT FORM
DATE: Some kind of Tuesday
TIME: It was 2 AM somewhere
LOCATION OF INCIDENT: City of Atlantis
NAMES OF PERSONS INVOLVED: Do not ask me to remember thousands upon thousands of names
DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT:
Please answer the following questions in detail:
1. How did the incident occur?
I was merely taking a stroll, talking to the locals when I was accosted by the Spirit of the Forest. I was minding my own business. Am I not allowed to waltz through the markets and chat with the vendors and their children about the wonders of the sea and the depths of knowledge that could be obtained?
2. Who or what was responsible for the incident?
I would point the fingers at the Spirit of the Forest and the Serpentine Deity that embodied Chaos.
3. Did any supernatural Entities, such as ghosts or unicorns, witness the incident?
Do said entities count? If there were any, I would not be able to acknowledge them.
4. Was any magical or enchanted objects involved in the incident? If yes, please specify.
None that I know of.
5. Did any of the witnesses or victims have any pre-existing medical or psychological conditions that may have contributed to the incident?
Likely, given the fragility of humans. I believe at least a couple were ill with various diseases when I took my stroll across the markets. One had a stye, I think.
6. Was there any use of time-travel or inter-dimensional portals that may have caused the incident?
None that I am aware.
7. Were there any witnesses who were under the influence of any magical or mind-altering substances at the time of the incident?
I think the turnip vendor was working while under some sort of opioid.
8. Were there any extraterrestrial beings involved in the incident?
If there were, show me.
9. Was the incident related to any prophecies or ancient myths?
I suppose the legend nowadays counts, no?
10. Was anyone wearing a cape at the time of the incident? If yes, please describe the cape in detail.
I wore a shawl if that counts. Many of the locals wore some kind of cape, and I think the Spirit of the Forest had one too. His smelled like deer dung.
DETAILS OF DAMAGE:
Please provide the following information:
1 (A). What was the extent of the damage caused by the incident?
The entire city burned, razed, and then sank, and with it its inhabitants.
2 (B). Were any ancient artifacts or treasures destroyed or damaged? If yes, please specify.
I would not know. Personal ones of the locals, perhaps.
3 (C). Did the incident cause any disruptions to the natural order of the universe or any other planes of existence?
A few changes of temperature in the local seas, added debris and polluted corrals, but that is all I was able to witness.
4 (D). Were any of the witnesses or victims harmed during the incident? If yes, please provide details.
The inhabitants of Atlantis would be such victims. Witnesses include the Serpentine God of Chaos and the Spirit of the Forest.
ACTION TAKEN:
Please provide the following information:
1. What action was taken immediately after the incident occurred?
I merely left. There was nothing left for me to visit or see.
2. Were any emergency response teams called to the scene? If yes, please specify.
I passed by a few rescue ships, but by then it was too late.
3. Was any magical or supernatural intervention required to mitigate the damage caused by the incident?
I am not aware. Maybe the local Cthonic Gods stepped in. I would imagine at least Thanatos did.
4. Was anyone punished or reprimanded for their role in the incident? If yes, please provide details. [LEAVE BLANK FOR O.A.B PERSONEL]
5. Was any follow-up action required after the initial response to the incident? If yes, please specify.
None that I was given.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
Please provide any additional information that may be relevant to this incident.
All I did was merely walk around the town and talk to the mortals. No more, no less. I did not even get to shop and was denied buying nice amulet. None of the souls could have been consumed because I was intervened first anyway. Which is a shame, as I am certain no one would have missed that particular politician mucking up one of the districts of the city.

CHAPTER 2: EMBERSHARD
It wasn’t supposed to be anything too serious.
That thought had echoed in Natsu’s head for the past few days. Perhaps somehow he’d always known things would end badly for him, but not yet, not so damn soon. Especially because of a small quest, so insignificantly simple.
He and his best friend, a Dark Elf named Igneel, had been passing through Shor’s Stone. They’d been spending a night in the local inn, drinking mead and reminiscing the adventures they had last summer, when a farmer came to talk to them. The farmer had found out that his wife had slept with their neighbouring blacksmith. He had forgiven his poor wife, but to keep his family’s honour, he needed the blacksmith out of the picture. Rather permanently, but without any murdery. If the two travelling mages could do something to scare the blacksmith so badly that he’d leave the town, it would be perfect.
Well, already slightly drunk, they had accepted the job. Why not, that should’ve been easy enough. As a necromancer, Igneel had got a brilliant idea. They’d resurrect a Draugr from the nearby barrow and lead it to the blacksmith’s door at night, that should frighten the man shitless. However, choosing a Draugr overlord for the task had been a little too much.
It had seemed good at first. Everything had gone according to the plan until the blacksmith picked up his sword and attacked the Draugr, not scared at all. The noise had woken up half the village. Igneel had lost control over the Draugr, it had struck the blacksmith to the leg with its rusty blade, then charged at everyone else. Natsu had thrown firebolts at the thing, but few shots had missed, setting a house or two aflame. As if it wasn’t bad enough, the damned Imperials arrived at the chaotic scene, and arrested them both.
And without any further trials, they were sentenced to die.
’Mages like you are too dangerous to be left alive’, they had said. But killing only one of them had been their greatest mistake.
And now, everything was a blur. Black, endless blur.
When twilight fell on the forest, Natsu was still shivering from shock. His toes and fingers were freezing, but he didn’t dare to build a campfire. Not yet. The black dragon had recently soared over them and flown north, but it didn't mean it was gone. How could a dragon even exist? Natsu didn’t know. He could barely understand it had been a real, living thing, when everything still felt like a nightmare he couldn’t wake from.
The blonde girl in a torn, yellow dress sat next to him, legs brought to her chest, resting her head on her knees. She was still sobbing, and it made his head ring. Natsu had tried to ignore it, tried to shush when she got too loud, but nothing seemed to work. He hated it when women cried. Bad memories.
”C-could you… could you just… shut up,” he muttered to the girl, failing to not sound rude. ”W-wailing won’t bring your… your parents back, but the… the dragon, it’s still...”
The girl lifted her head from her knees, giving him a grim glare. Her brown eyes were bloodshot and swollen, glistening as she wept. She sunk her fingers into the cold moss underneath her as her body tensed when he spoke.
”Just… stop crying,” Natsu told as the girl kept staring at her. He didn’t know how to comfort her, when he wanted to scream his lungs out as well. He only wanted her to keep quiet before his head would explode. ”I’m sick of… listening to… that.”
”Y-you cried too,” she retorted, her trembling voice filling with waking anger. ”When… When they chopped your friend’s head off, you cried… too.”
Natsu shook his head, feeling a strike in his heart. ”I didn’t –”
”My father…" she started and took a deep, shivering breath. "He said a man should face his death with… with courage instead of… wailing like a milk-drinker.”
Natsu silenced. Damned Nords with their ideals about honourable, courageous death. Natsu had long ago learnt to hide his tears from this cold, ruthless world, but couldn’t a man show his grief when his dearest friend gets brutally executed right in front of his eyes? Because at that moment, the world had been way too merciless. Natsu hoped that the girl didn’t share her father’s values. Otherwise, he wouldn’t stand the journey to Winterhold with her, if she still wanted to join the Mage’s College.
"Damn you, Nord girl,” he muttered, the stutter from his speech clearing up when he spoke quietly enough. A brief silence fell. The girl snifled, wiping her eyes and suffocating a few sobs into her hands. Then she lowered them, glancing at him.
“M-my name is Lucy, not a Nord girl,” she whispered through the tears, catching Natsu’s attention.
"Luigi?"
"Lucy!" she hissed.
Natsu nodded slowly. It was a rare name for a Nord, but she certainly was one. Her fair skin and hair left no room for doubt. He didn't know who she had been before this happened, but she didn't represent Natsu's image about Nords. Being a Breton himself, he knew them as hot-blooded warriors, but Lucy, who wanted to be a wizard, didn’t seem like that.
Well, Natsu hadn’t even known many Nords in his eighteen years of life. There had once been a Nord named Erza, a warrior from the Companions, who he’d brawled with. She had broken his bones, and his ribs still ached if he laughed hard enough. Then, there was Gray, a crazy frost mage from the College. To put it simply, Natsu hated his whole existence. So, Natsu didn’t quite know what to expect from Lucy. If she wouldn’t hit too hard or annoy him to death, it would be great.
”Well, Lucy”, he started, daring to speak a bit louder than before.  ”We have to sit in this cold, mossy shithole until it gets dark, so could we… talk, maybe? But please, about something else than… well, things that would make us cry.”
Natsu was sure by then that the dragon wouldn’t come for them. If it hadn’t heard Lucy’s weeping, it wouldn’t hear them speaking. And the longer he’d sit there quietly, the more excruciating his grief would grow. A little distraction, anything, anything would be better than this haunting silence. Because in that silence, Natsu could only see Igneel’s head rolling down the plaza, blood spraying from his neck, the wicked grin on the headman’s face –
”Why… Why were you there?” she asked, causing him to turn his gaze at her, the chain of distressing visions dissolving for a while. ”Why… were you sentenced to die?”
”For burning half of Shor’s Stone,” he answered bluntly, and the girl’s eyes widened. ”W-why looking at me like that? What did you think I did? Killed a chicken in Riverwood or something?”
”I… I didn’t think you were actually a criminal,” she mumbled, sounding a bit terrified. ”Great... so now I’m stuck in this cold s-shithole with a... pyromancer.”
Natsu’s eyes narrowed. He wouldn’t describe himself as a criminal. He always did what he thought was truly right, even if it meant breaking some laws along the way. Still, there was no denying he caused some unnecessary destruction every now and then. Fire was like that, uncontrollable and wild. Just like him.
”Listen here, I’m not a thug, a thief, or an assassin or… something,” Natsu assured. ”It was an accident. The Shor’s Stone thing. It’s the Imperials you should... be afraid of. The bastards killed my best friend and enjoyed it, I fucking saw it in their eyes.”
She was silent for a moment. The fear in her eyes flickered out. Somehow, she was convinced, and somehow, she trusted it had truly been an accident. ”I’ve seen it too,” Lucy answered with a shaky breath. ”I know the real face of the Empire.”
Trembling, Natsu nodded. He hadn’t cared about the civil war until now. He hadn’t cared who would rule the country until now. But after this day he saw everything in a different light. Because if not for the Imperials, Igneel would still be alive. If the Stormcloak forces had solved the little accident at Shor’s Stone, some bounty for arson would’ve been enough.
”If the dragon hadn’t burned them, I would’ve," he mumbled into his cold hands. "Damn insane fucks. Shit, I think I’ll have to join the Stormcloaks now, to show them not to mess with mages. Yes, that would do it. It would avenge Igneel’s death... Killing all of them to the last man...”
The girl stared at him in silence, letting him mumble out his anger. For now, those were only words, something to keep him from setting the world on fire. Too often, his rage manifested in flame – and today, there had been enough of it.
”Why’d you save me?" the girl asked suddenly, stopping his cursing. "You... You didn’t have to. You could’ve just... escaped, and left me to die. Why risk your life... for me?”
Silent, Natsu turned his eyes to her, and thought for an answer. When the cloud of barely-reigned rage began to subside, he realised that he didn’t know it himself. Survival instinct had driven his actions, and somehow reached out to her as well.
”I saw you on the porch, looking like… like you didn’t belong there,” Natsu answered, recalling the morning which seemed like a lifetime ago. ”And when you were still alive I thought I’d… help you out.”
Lucy's confused gaze stayed on him for a while. A hint of gratitude lingered in her eyes.
”So... what are we going to do now?” she asked then. ”It’s getting cold and dark. Should we go to Whiterun? It’s near, has strong walls and a lot of soldiers. If the dragon comes back.”
Natsu scoffed. ”You’d really take a death row prisoner to Whiterun? There are Imperials there. It’s... It's not like the dragon made my sentence go away.”
”Any other ideas? We're freezing to death here.”
Natsu thought for a moment. He didn’t know the area well, but they had to find shelter soon. The Imperials had taken his weapons and coins, and the girl didn’t have anything with her. She wouldn’t survive in a torn dress. They had to find some equipment, and one place came to Natsu’s mind.
”There’s a run-down mine nearby. Embershard.”
Puzzled, Lucy raised her brow. ”Isn’t it full of bandits?”
”Nothing I can’t handle," Natsu assured. "Let’s smoke them out, take their stuff, stay there overnight and leave at dawn. We could go to Riverwood, and from there to Windhelm before heading to Winterhold.”
”Sounds... dangerous."
As Lucy lowered her eyes to the ground, Natsu understood she didn't buy his plan. But it was the only option they got. If they'd wander aimlessly in the dark forest, they'd end up dead. And despite losing his best friend, Natsu didn't want to die. No matter how horrible it felt, he couldn't give up now.
Igneel wouldn't want that.
”Bandits are nothing compared to what we just survived," Natsu said. "It’ll soon be dark enough to move safely. We just... hold on a little while.”
Lucy stared at him for a moment, but then she nodded hesitantly. "Okay," she whispered, causing a stone to roll from Natsu's shoulders. He was glad she accepted it. He didn't want to leave her alone either.
”You’d... still like to talk about... something?” he asked then, but Lucy turned her eyes away and shook her head. He accepted that, too. At least she wasn’t crying anymore.
For now, silence was good enough.
__________________________________________________
By the time the night fell, Lucy's whole body ached from crouching under the pines. A wolf howled in the distance; a clear sign that their hiding place wasn't safe anymore, but Lucy waited for the mage to make the first move. She trusted he’d know better when to get going.
While they sat there in silence, Lucy’s heart grew cold and numb along with her fingers. The sharpest shock wore off as everything became cloudy, like mist enveloping the forest in the autumn morning. It all seemed like a bizarre dream: the dragon attacking the city, her parents burning alive, escaping through the flames... such things couldn’t really happen. It all had to be just a dream.
Strange calmness filled her mind as she lulled into that belief. It all was just a dream. Perhaps she had run away from home and crossed paths with this travelling mage who would take her to the College. Almost like she had always imagined.
”We should get moving now,” the mage whispered, interrupting the trail of Lucy’s thoughts. Brought back to the present moment in the cold, dark forest, Lucy let her gaze meet the mage’s as she nodded.
Following his example, Lucy rose up and stretched her limbs. She wiped moss and spruce needles from her dress, noticing how badly it had torn. It had once reached her ankles but now it barely covered her knees. Scratches filled her bare shins but she couldn’t feel any pain.
She couldn’t feel anything, really.
The mage started heading in a direction opposite from where they had come. There weren’t any paths on the forest floor to follow, but Lucy hoped he knew where to go. She hadn’t been outside Helgen’s walls at night, and couldn’t navigate in the darkness. The mage fumbled forward for a while before glimpsing a clearing, which turned out to be a road.
The road from Helgen to Riverwood, the one Lucy had walked many times.
As she stepped out of the forest after the mage, Lucy raised her eyes to the sky. Thousands and thousands of stars sparkled against the black velvet, accompanied by the two moons, Masser and Secunda. The sight brought comfort to Lucy. A familiar road with a familiar night sky.
Lucy caught the mage staring at the silhouette of the Bleak Falls Barrow, contrasting against the night sky, on the other side of a river. He had stopped, his brow furrowing as if he was deep in thought. Moonlight shone on his face, letting Lucy study his features for a moment. Especially his large, dark eyes caught her attention, a magical mystery unravelled behind his gaze.
”Embershard mine is somewhere here,” he said, voice shaking. His teeth rattled against each other as he trembled restlessly to keep warm. ”I remember those ruins.”
Lucy didn’t answer as he pulled a hood over his head and disappeared into the night with his dark robes. Quickly, she followed him. She didn’t want to get lost in the woods alone. The mage left the road again and walked into the forest, heading towards the bedrock’s face near them.
She had a vague idea of where the mine was supposed to be. She had passed by many times on her way to Riverwood, but never at night. Her father had said it was a dangerous place overrun by outlaws. She would’ve been afraid to go there before, but now nothing seemed to scare her. If the worst imaginable thing had already happened to her, what could a few bandits do? Nothing.
Torchlight glowed in the middle of the forest, fluttering against the pines. The mage slowed down to silence the cracking sticks and rustling leaves beneath his feet. A shadow moved on the ground as someone kept guard at the mine’s entrance.
The mage didn’t give any warning as purple light appeared on his palm. Lucy’s eyes widened as he shot it forward, summoning a portal where a flaming creature passed through. In the shape of a demonic woman, a flame atronach appeared right in front of the mine. Lucy heard a scream, followed by running steps as the guard ran away.
Lucy turned to the mage as he chuckled quietly. "So you're a pyromancer and a conjurer?" she asked.
The flame atronach gave up chasing the bandit and floated closer to them. Lucy flinched as she felt its heat on her skin, and stared at it in awe. She had never seen a Daedra before. It was beautiful, but terrifying at the same time.
”Not really,” the mage answered. He closed the portal with a swift move of a hand and the creature disappeared.  ”I focus on fire-based destruction magic, but I conjure flame atronachs sometimes. They’re... well, helpful.”
Lucy looked at him, trying to recall his name. He had said it earlier, but Lucy’s mind couldn’t hold onto it. She could only remember him telling how he burned half of the Shor’s Stone. It had made her nervous at first, but it didn’t bother her anymore. He had said he wasn’t a bad guy, and Lucy wanted to believe that.
She didn’t really have any other choice than to believe that.
”I’d like... to learn conjuration too,” Lucy whispered abruptly while staring at him. ”My great-grandmother Anna was a conjurer. A very good one.”
”Really? That’s...” he said, looking down to avoid her eyes. ”I don’t know many Nord conjurers, but if she was good, then you might have some talent. Good luck with that.”
His tone wasn’t mocking, but not supportive either. Lucy deemed he was still in shock and couldn’t find anything proper to say. So was she. Mumbling about her great-grandmother to a perfect stranger? It had been a secret she shouldn’t have spilt.
Every time she had talked with a mage, her parents had been nearby, but now they were gone. She could talk about magic to her heart’s content. Her words were still shaky, her mind in a blur, but magic had always been her biggest dream. It managed to pierce through the haze and grab Lucy’s hand, pull her back to the surface before she’d fall into bottomless pit of grief.
”Do you know any other magic?” Lucy asked, curiosity seeping through her. The mage furrowed his brow, surprised by her sudden chattiness.
”Some restoration spells,” he answered with a one-sided shrug. ”Healing, you know. It’s useful. And I can conjure a dagger. I used to have a glass dagger with me, but the bastards took it.”
Lucy nodded. She had read a little about the different schools of magic, but she lacked any hands-on experience about them. Seeing him casting those fireballs had been the first time she saw anyone using magic. He seemed skilled, but well, not just anyone could be accepted to the College of Winterhold. Perhaps he could teach her something before they’d make it there?
”Anyway, we should carry on,” the mage said, gesturing towards the mine. ”There’s probably more bandits there, but I’ll smoke them out somehow. There’s been enough death today.”
The mage walked to the mine’s door and left it open as he stepped in. Suddenly, she hesitated as old fears surged over her. She had always been told to avoid situations like this – just gods knew what the bandits would do to her if the mage failed to chase them away. Maybe she shouldn't do this. Extra pair of hands would always be needed in Riverwood Trader, if she’d choose safety over adventures.
But, shaking her head, Lucy decided not to need safety anymore. Safety had become her cage, strangling her like chains.
Warmth surged into her freezing bones as she stepped into the mine. The air smelled of moist earth and strong ale, and torches fluttered on the walls of the tunnel. Lucy could only see a shadow of the mage as he had hurried forward. She walked after him, trying hard to memorise his name. She didn’t want to ask it again.
Lucy reached the mage at the entrance of a greater chamber. Crouching where the tunnel ended, he collected some moss and mushrooms from the ground and prepared them in a ball. Lucy frowned, struggling to understand what he was doing.
Then a single spark from the mage’s fingertip set the ball on fire, puffing a cloud of black smoke in the air. She heard chatter coming from below them, but didn’t dare to peek past the corner.
"The idiots will think the mine is on fire and flee through the back end," he whispered. Then he tossed the ball to the ground and took a few steps back. The murmur grew louder as the bandits smelled the smoke, but Lucy couldn’t separate the words. They sounded alert.
And by accident, Lucy couched as the smoke found its way into her lungs. ’Is someone there?’
”Fuck,” the mage cursed silently as one of the bandits noticed him and picked up his axe. Lucy tried to apologise, but words got stuck in her throat. The mage stamped on the ball to put out the fire, exposing their hiding place at the same.
Two rough-looking men appeared behind the smoke. The other one, a slim, red-haired man had a look in his eyes which evoked sickness in Lucy’s stomach. This was exactly what she’d been warned about. As if he was hungry, but not for food. For her.
”Tor, kill the boy while I catch the girl,” the bandit said to his friend. ”It has been a while since I’ve gotten a taste of a woman so pretty. Our lovely ladies look like filthy beasts.”
The mage raised his arm in front of Lucy to keep her back. She gasped as he enveloped his body in a cloak of flames before charging forward. He brought his hands together, casting a fireball between them and throwing it toward the bandit. The man screamed as it caught him, the force of the impact swaying him off his feet.
The other bandit froze and stared at the mage with a fearful gaze. Showing no mercy, he grabbed the man from the neck, pouring fire straight into his body. Lucy shrieked as she watched flames gnawing away his skin, the pink turning into charcoal black. Almost like a dragon, the mage let his fire burn his enemies alive.
The mage let go of the man. He fell lifelessly to the ground, his fur armour still flaming. The other bandit rose behind the mage, his shaking fingers clutched to the handle of his axe.
”Son of a –”
He couldn’t finish his curse, for the mage turned around with another fireball readied in his hands. With full force, he tossed it at him, sending him flying to the back end of the chamber. Lucy could hear only a painful crack and distant groaning as the man hit the ground.
And as he rose no more, Lucy knew he was dead.
Flames surrounding the mage dissolved. He wiped his forehead and glanced at Lucy. At an utter loss of words, she just stared at him, trembling.
He had said he wasn’t a criminal, but here he was with two dead bodies on his account.
”You... You said you wouldn’t kill them,” Lucy mumbled, lowering her gaze from the mage’s dark eyes to the corpse by his feet. ”You said you would smoke them out, not... kill them...”
The mage crouched by the body and lit the remains on fire. The flames intensified, beginning to turn the corpse into ashes. The smell of burning human flesh filled the chamber like it had filled the streets of Helgen. Lucy shook her head as tears welled up in her eyes, tears she thought she had already run out of.
”Well, I tried,” he answered and moved to the second corpse, to cremate it as well. Flames devoured the remains faster than Lucy had ever seen anything burn. ”I tried not to fight them. Trust me, I don’t kill unless I have to. These are outlaws, living by the rule kill or be killed. There is no other choice than to live by that as well when meeting them.”
”We could have asked them -”
”Ask them what?” he wondered, stepping away from the burning body. ”Should we have been like, ’hey, sorry, would you please be so kind and let us stay in your mine for a night? And you'd be so kind you wouldn't rape our fucking arses and slaughter us while we sleep?' It doesn't work like that with these people. These were the real criminals, not me.”
Lucy admitted in silence. He was right. The bandits would have killed him, captured her and... she didn’t even want to think about it. Whatever it would’ve been, this was better than that. Even though it felt so wrong in Lucy’s heart. He had saved her at the cost of two lives, yet she struggled to feel gratitude about it. Only shock.
”Okay,” she let out a long sigh. ”Is there... anyone else?”
The mage looked around, listening closely for any noises, but there was only silence. Lucy walked closer to him. It seemed they were alone now, but Lucy knew they shouldn’t lower their guard yet. They shouldn’t lower their guard ever again.
”So... you still want to come with me to Winterhold?” the mage asked suddenly.
Lucy’s eyes shot to him. His question was sincere, a hint of guilt seeping through his words. Lucy looked him into the eyes, comparing his gaze to the way the bandit had glared at her. There wasn’t that kind of evil or malice in his eyes. There wasn’t any kind of evil at all.
”Yes,” Lucy answered. ”I want to.”
He nodded as an answer and turned away, heading to the fireplace the bandits had built. He looked into the kettle and chuckled, as if to distract himself from the deaths, to pretend that he didn’t care.
“Well, there’s some… stew, I guess. Gods, it has been days since I last ate. Are you hungry?” he asked, then looked over his shoulder. The little joy in his eyes died as he saw her pale face. “Oh, yeah, I’ll understand if you don’t quite feel like eating…”
Suddenly, right then, Lucy remembered his name.
He was Natsu.
From now on to forever his name would mean freedom to her. Vast, inviting, but terrifying freedom.

Matthew 2
* Visitors From the East
1. After reading the story of the visit of the Magi/Wisemen, what difference/s did you notice from the usual nativity scene we see during Christmas?
- List down your observations and include scripture references.
Answer: When the men went into the house and saw the child with Mary, his mother, they knelt down and worshiped him. They took out their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh[c] and gave them to him.
2. How many prophecies about Jesus was fulfilled in today’s reading?
- List down only the OT scripture address.
a. Judah will hold the royal scepter,
And his descendants will always rule.
Nations will bring him tribute
And bow in obedience before him. (Genesis 49:10)
b. The Lord says, “Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are one of the smallest towns in Judah, but out of you I will bring a ruler for Israel, whose family line goes back to ancient times.” (Micah 5:2)
c. The royal line of David is like a tree that has been cut down; but just as new branches sprout from a stump, so a new king will arise from among David’s descendants. (Isaiah 11:1)
d. The Lord says, “The time is coming when I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. That king will rule wisely and do what is right and just throughout the land. (Jeremiah 23:5)
e. You will always have descendants, and I will make your kingdom last forever. Your dynasty will never end. (2 Samuel 7:16)
What verse made an impact to you today?
Answer: The verse that made an impact to me is The verse 23 - and they went to live there in the town of Nazareth. So the Lord’s promise came true, just as the prophet had said, “He will be called a Nazarene.”.
