Okay but imagine Mike and Will growing inseparable over the course of season 5. They have to split up for the final battle. They’re both crying and hugging each other because it’s so dangerous. Mike is just holding Will and he tells Will he loves him. Will says it back because in his head he thinks Mike just means platonically but us as the audience are like “erm mike is being romantic.” Mike also means it romantic but Will isn’t catching this. When they finish the battle and they’re both alive, they see each other from a distance. They start sprinting to each other while sobbing. Let Mike cup Wills face in his hands and whisper “I thought I was going to lose you.” He then leans in and kisses Will. Will is caught totally off guard and after a few seconds Mike pulls back because he’s shocked and he starts stumbling over some apology trying to play it off as being in the heat of the moment. Will pulls Mike back in and kisses him again. After that, they can rest their foreheads against each other and say some cheesy shit like “it’s over now.” Or “we won.”
*Takes a dramatic bow*

So I absolutely DIE every time I think about the whole "Mike was recreating the best thing he'd ever done when he asked Will to be best friends again" in the s4 bedroom scene, but LOOK:
They're in the same position that they had been in the swingset scene all those years ago, with Mike being way taller since he's standing/sitting on the bed and Will being way shorter since he was sitting on the swing/kneeling on the floor.
So. If we had a swingset scene, this would be a DIRECT PARALLEL to it.
But I'm fine tho (me when I lie)

If Mike isn't vecnad in season 5, I don't want it. Like, I don't mean this in a hating way, but I want to see him sob. Like he hasn't cried in like forever. The last time he cried properly was like season 2 when he gave that monolog to Will. I want to see vecna call him out, I want to see Will save him. I NEED IT, NOWWW!! I need to see byler meeting on the swings in kindergarten like istg if they don't show us that in season 5. I don't want Mike to die from it. I just think if that happened, it'd be good for the storyline. It would help give Mike the final push to yk stop pretending/hiding and tell Will about his feelings.

Will’s uncomfortable, feels left out, and notices El acting different around Mike.
El’s laughing and trying to be like a couple again to Mike, but also lying to him a lot of the day.
Mike is joking around and wants to include Will, but won’t do it directly. He’s also making sure Will is having fun, but trying to please El by acting coupley at the rink.

How else would Will know that El is faking her emotions and lying to Mike constantly if he wasn’t focusing on El?
Why else would El try to convince Mike that she was happy and had friends in California if she wasn’t trying to put up a front for him?
How else would Mike know if Will was being sulky or grumpy if he wasn’t watching Will’s reaction all the time?

All of these result in different outcomes:
Will sternly tells El that she shouldn’t be faking things and hiding the fact that she’s getting bullied all the time.
El can’t hide her emotions anymore and she bonks her bully in front of Mike— even before that, she demands her bully to just go and tell Mike that it was a joke amongst friends.
Mike lashes out on Will because he’s mad that Will didn’t reach out to him either and calls Will out for being visibly upset the whole day at the rink.

In conclusion:
Will wants El to be honest to Mike.
El wants to seem happy for Mike.
Mike wants Will to actually be happy.

Will is saying it’s okay to be upset in front of Mike.
El is hiding being upset for the sake of Mike.
Mike is trying to make Will not upset anymore.

post volume 2 byler hope
i know volume 2 has left us feeling very pessimistic and hopeless for the possibility of byler. yet, i do still think there is reason to hope and so i have compiled a list of amazing posts that have definitely increased my faith in s5 byler.
(here is a small disclaimer that even though byler just makes sense to us narratively and overall, there is still a chance that the duffers won’t go through with it. if you choose to have hope regardless, that’s great! but pessimism is absolutely valid too. cautious optimism is definitely recommended)
