There's a woman on Twitter who's made a tweet saying that there's a white man stalking her who knows where she lives and where she works and she's filed a restraining order and everything but if she ends up dead it's a white man from Louisville named Thomas Brown who did it. Guess whos in the quotes and comments casting doubt, mocking her, victim blaming, and generally being vile fucking people.

Note
the mention of the nautilus got me thinking of somethin entirely different.
gordn is a deep sea scientist, and is sent in a one man mission in a submarine to previously unexplored depths. there's been wierd sounds and seismic activity recorded here, but BM doesn't tell him that. he's just there to test the capabilities of their new manned submarine and take readings.
except that things start to go wrong. he loses contact with the surface. and he keeps hearing strange sounds, seeing strange sights in the cameras. then the alarm blares - the protective casing on the sub is failing. as well as the navigation. and the motors. this thing is going to fall apart and he's going to die at the bottom of the ocean.
and just as water starts leaking in, the casing on the sub breaches in, and gordn flinches - panic overwhelming his mind just as he thinks he's about to die.
except he's not.
because benr, a massive underwater creature, has been circling this little interloper for the better part of 4 hours. there's something alive inside, but he can't tell what. and then it starts to shriek - stuttering and falling lopsided towards the ocean floor, its alien lights flickering out and leaving them in darkness (which benr prefers, and it allows him to swim closer)
there's something in there, and he wants it. he's got to crack this thing open like a wonder ball. but he's smart enough to understand that whatever's inside may be destroyed by the force of the water rushing in. so he does the only sensible thing:
he takes the whole one man sub into his mouth, and, keeping his lips shut, gently bites it open. what falls onto his tongue surprises him. something warm. something warm and alive and gasping for air.
being a deep sea creature, ben probably doesn't have access to air. so let's say that sweet voice nonsense can generate air, replacing the water in his guts and mouth.
gordon coughs up water, half unconscious. ben gently pins him to his pallette and spits out the rest of the sub - he has his prize. he swims deeper, back to the trench he calls home, to curl up and prod at the warm little creature in his mouth.
ben knows what a human is. but humans aren't supposed to be down here. he closes his eyes and lathes his tongue gently over his little captive, building an image of him in his mind through touch. so, so small. but strong for a human. thick around the middle. long hair. tastes like sweat and neuroticism. something about it - him - interests ben, even though gords not awake yet.
gord is gently coming to in the warm confines of bens mouth. the cold, cramped interior of sub and the frigid water spilling in has been replaced with bone-deep, humid warmth. and something warm and plush keeps pressing against him, moving him around. the jostling rouses him and he opens his eyes to ... darkness. is he dead? it takes him a moment, but only a moment, to put several things together - his sub breaking. the humid heat. the strange pulse against his skin and the movement of his surroundings -
he's inside something living. his sub broke, he didn't die, and something fucking ate him.
his first instinct, of course, is to panic. he thrashes in bens mouth, not really thinking about the fact that the deep sea is outside, just - acting on instinct. he doesn't want to die like this, swallowed alive by some unthinking monster.
Ben is taken aback by the sudden movement. he can't talk to gord and tell him to calm down, so he pins the tiny creature with his tongue, trying to still his movement. he's also just... curious. about the way the movement feels in his mouth, different from anything else he's ever eaten.
the attention only makes gord panic more, though, so ben decides the only thing he can do is swallow him down so that he can use his mouth to speak. Then maybe he can get this little guy to chill out.
this is getting long and im tired, but ive got more ideas for what comes next :)
Tumblr media
I've seen similar kinda stories/aus like this where they just have benb as a giant mer, but.
I'm thinkin more along the lines of Deep One benb
grats gord, you just got rescued by gamer bro cthulu!

Fine Line Masterpost:
A breakdown, musically and lyrically
In Fine Line, ‘raw honesty’ doesn’t really mean delving into the details of who Harry Styles is sleeping with, but rather it’s a glimpse into the world of a 25-year-old who is both deeply in love and who fucks up a lot; he’s given to sugary supplications, is plagued by jealousy, pouts at consequences, and struggles with understanding an inner self that keeps prodding him towards exploration of his identity.
The album is constructed to be consumed by various factions of the fandom. There’s no getting away from the surface dedication of HS2 as an ode to a blonde supermodel with a delicious French accent whose new boyfriend’s father owns a gallery, a girl who has golden hair and blue eyes. I won’t be arguing that away, because it’s intentional, it’s meant to be the surface layer.
The mantle is not the crust, though. Taken individually, each song can be seen as speaking to the queer experience in varied and complex ways, and I’ve seen some truly beautiful explorations of this angle. Especially with TPWK and FL, the anthemic solidarity with queer experience is astounding and gorgeous. I think it’s no accident that this broad take holds true as we zoom in and look at the complex details; Harry has written songs that speak both to this meaning and also hold incredibly personal and intimate significance between him and a partner (in this post we’ll call them Subject).
I will be focusing on the album as a cohesive narrative in the context of it’s chronological, linear progression. Fine Line details an incredibly personal struggle; it’s a love letter, an at times embarrassing, self-loathing reflection on a love gone wrong, a love struggling, an emerging self, and a hope redeemed.
Please feel free to ask questions if any of the technical stuff is confusing, but please also remember that these are my opinions, coupled with my analysis as a professional musician (meaning, hopefully I’m remembering those torturous years of theory dictation correctly!)
Side A
All four songs share an off-kilter-ness, a restless, unsettled, frantic feeling, as if Harry is balancing, undecided between throwing himself at the feet of the one he loves or pulling away. This is no illusion; the tonic base is missing from each song save WS (but even here the tonic is sabotaged in our ear, as we’ll discuss). We’re on a journey to side B; we start with a hope that sweet memories and lust can salvage love, and we end with Harry going his own way.
Golden: There are only two chords in this song, DM and CM7, the V and IV7 of the implied tonic, G Major. We never get to tonic though. We never touch that home base. The songs “da da da’s” give it a happier, peppier illusion than the text reveals.
Harry is already broken, already reflecting and hopeless as the song begins. His intended listener, Subject - the sun, the golden one - waits for him in the sky, and is all he’s ever known. Subject has always browned his skin just right, but now, Harry reflects, perhaps has been too bright for him. (Is some aspect of Harry buried in the brilliance of Subject’s light?) This golden Subject is scared, though, scared Harry is so open. Harry doesn’t want to be alone, but he also needs to peel back edges of himself previously unexplored. Stepping into and away from light is a major theme for Harry, and this opening song sets that precedent. Subject is scared because “hearts get broken,” but Harry’s heart is already broken, so perhaps this refers not to interpersonal heartbreak, but situational. Harry recognizes he’s “out of his head...” BUT, he counters, “Loving you’s the antidote!” He naively gushes out poetry while Subject remains unconvinced. We establish an impasse.
Watermelon Sugar: The Dm - Cm - Am6 - GM chord progression is an odd one; my best guess is that the song is in D minor, so the progression is:
i, VII, v, IV
That’s not typical in a minor key. Usually the leading tone note (in this case a C) is raised (so C#) making the five chord Major (V) not minor (v) and the seven chord diminished (viio) not Major (VII). also the Major IV ignores the B flat in the key signature of D minor and instead uses B natural. So all this to say that the tonic base STILL doesn’t feel like a tonic home, because the normalcy around the key signature is erased. Everything still feels unsettled, unresolved.
Much has been made of the oral sex interpretation, so, ya. This is a song about remembering the best of times, a prayer to Subject, a plea for summertime and bellies and strawberries, and a feeling Harry is desperate to get back.
Adore You: The three chords in this song, Cm - BbM - AbM, imply an E flat Major key, so vi, V, IV, respectively. The tonic, Eb (I), is (once again) never used, and instead vi, V, IV circle without ever coming to rest.
Subject, “Honey,” creates a rainbow paradise. This is another love letter to Subject, let me adore you, I’ll walk through fire for you, you don’t have to say anything just listen to me, you don’t have to say you love me too, just please, please... you’ve been on my mind. Let me adore you like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do. By this wording, Harry admits that adoring Subject is not the only thing he ever does, yet he wishes Subject to remember, or imagine, this false reality.
Lights Up: We’re in C Major here, with the chords Am - GM - FM, creating the same exact chord progression as Adore You, vi, V, IV. We (yet again!) never reach the tonic of C Major. It’s a constant tease of resolution, but there’s no solid home base. We’re suspended in limbo.
Subject is “sorry, btw.” What does that mean, Harry asks? Sorry we’re here in this place, that this is happing? This song is Harry’s declaration: he’s not staying, he’s not coming back down. It would be sweet if things stayed the same, but no, I’m stepping into the light. “All the lights couldn’t put out the dark”... even all the golden sun of Subject couldn’t heal the void in Harry’s soul?  Harry asks subject, do you know who you are? implying that he’s determined to answer this for himself. I’m reminded of the crab in Moana, singing “Shiny.” There’s a certain bravado here, a reckless glittery happiness, a flaunting, an exuberance in discovery.
Side B
Tonics are all over the place. Harry is certainly certain about heartbreak. No ambiguity here.
Cherry: GM - Em - CM, or  I, vi, IV. We’re in G Major and we know it. Repetitive “cou-cos’s” pepper the track like hanging fruit (let’s imagine from cherry trees).
The song is a simple one, simple in its jealousy. Harry has let Subject go, and now Subject is at their best... and Harry hates it. He doesn't want his former pet term of endearment used on another, even though he has no claim on Subject’s actions anymore. Harry keeps finding bits of Subject in how he dresses. They’re not talking lately, and Harry perhaps is most upset that this separation isn’t going how he planned... Subject is at their best without him.
The gallery line is inserted as a bridge, a unique line of music rather separate from the rest, an intentional narrative. But what’s most fascinating is the end of the song. The previous repetitive chord progression changes. Now we have
GM - AM7 (an added C#) - Am7 (4/2 inversion) - GM
or I, II7, ii7, I
The “cou-cou” lands during the AM7 (the II7) and it lands EXACTLY on the note of B, extending the 7th chord to a ninth chord, before, on its second syllable, dropping to the A and holding there (a kind of suspension) while the chord progression resolves to the Am7 (ii7), making the A a chord tone. This is deliberate. Unless the whole piece was harmonically built around Camille’s random use of a B to A in a voicemail (also randomly in the perfect key for Harry’s voice) this was purposely recorded for aesthetic effect. I for one really love it, I could listen to breathy french girls mutter about beaches endlessly...
Falling: A straightforward progression. In the key of E Major,
 EM - C#m - BM - AM or I, vi, V, IV
With Falling, the only ballade on the album, we see Harry shift from jealousy to self destructive behavior. I don’t believe the ‘wandering hands’ line is about cheating (he and Subject were already apart) but rather, Harry seeking to wound Subject by turning to others. Communication is back open, because Subject says they care, they miss him too, but now Harry’s gone and fucked it all up. What have I become? What if Subject never needs me again? I can’t unpack the baggage they left. I just want Subject AROUND! Harry isn’t even begging for a romantic connection, he’s simply begging for Subject’s presence. He was so sure he could discover himself in LU, and now he keeps asking, what am I now? Who has he become on his own? He’s falling, and there’s no one to catch him.
To Be So Lonely: This song waffles between two keys, just as Harry waffles between defending himself to Subject and finally, finally admitting (in just one small line) that he is, in fact, sorry. The song seems to start out in C Major, with CM and Am chords (I, iv) but then at the chorus the Am chord elides from a iv to a i, revealing the key is really A minor. The chorus goes on to be:
Am - GM - Em - FM
or i, VII (lowered leading tone in minor), v (lowered leading tone in minor), VI
A fluttering mandolin mimics a fluttering heartbeat, and a folk music lilt gives the song a certain feel of heartbreak.
Harry asks for Subject to not blame the drunk caller, likely himself. Harry was away. He missed Subject. He was just a little boy when he fell, and presumably Subject caught him that time. Subject is trying to be friends, they mean well, perhaps have taken pity on him, but Harry cannot stand to be called baby now, not when that name doesn’t mean what it used to, not when it’s a hollow word. Harry’s ‘home’ is suddenly a lonely place, but Subject has his reasons for how he’s acted, presumably good ones, and finally Harry gives his mea culpa, “this is it, so I’m sorry.”
Interestingly, only after admitting that he’s made mistakes too, that he’s not perfect, that he shares the blame, does Harry confront and open himself to the realization contained in the next song, the heart of the album and the crux of what Harry’s been dancing around up until this point.
She: In E minor, both verse and chorus use the same progression:
Em - DM - CM - Am - (Bm, a quick lead-in to) - Em
or i, II, VI, iv, v (no raised leading tone), i
This Bowie-esc sounding song is the first to have characters. In addition to the Subject (perennially addressed as ‘You’) there is The Man and She. I would argue The Man and She are both Harry, a duality. The man drops his kids off at school, the man is thinking of You, like all of us do (everyone thinks of their SO perhaps). The Man goes through mundane daily tasks, but is he faking it? Does he really know what to do? He’s playing pretend, so pretend.
Now Harry introduces She. (When speaking of She, Harry sings in a high falsetto.) She lives in daydreams, she is the first one he sees, and Harry doesn’t know who She is. A Woman just in his head, who sleeps in his (a jump up to the falsetto for just this one word in the verse) bed while he plays pretend. Much has been said about the gender/fluidity discovery in this song, and by better than me. It’s clear what Harry is saying, it’s clear what he’s going through and wrestling with. He’s thinking of Subject, but also haunted by She, in his head, in his mind’s eye, in his daydreams. She is a part of Harry, and Harry wants to know who She is.
Side C
Uncomplicated tonics! All Major! A shift into happiness perhaps?
Sunflower: F Major. BbM - FM - CM, or IV, I, V.  The bridge is fancy:
iii, IV, V, vi, I, V vi, V (vi?) V
Some trippie hippie song from the 60s! Two lines of thought are apparent from the get go; Harry says he wants to get to know Subject, but then says “before I got to know you.” It’s as if this is a new beginning, like he and Subject are starting over. Much is made of the ‘seed’ thing, a metaphor for new life and rebirth, “plant new seeds in the melody.” Harry is trying hard not to talk to Subject, to not seem eager, not act a fool. He was just tongue tied, then he’s still tongue tied, implying he’s done this whole dance before. He implores Subject to hold their sweet memories: domestic times, kitchens, kids. In Golden, Subject was the sun. Now Subject is a sunflower, hung up high in the gallery, out of the shade, in the light a sunflower needs to thrive, into the light, step into the light. Little gasps from Harry interject throughout; is he surfacing from water (LU music video?), is he breathing between kisses, is he suddenly gifted new life like Gandalf atop Isengard? The end of the piece devolves into calls of unbridled, nonsensical joy, like birds song, like mating calls amongst brilliant plumage.
Canyon Moon: D Major. DM - GM - AM - DM (I, IV, V, I)
 Bridge DM - (Em transit?) - AM - DM (I, (ii), V, I)
Chorus DM - AM - DM - GM (I, V6, I6, IV)
Perhaps the most straightforward tonic bound song of the album. Harry is missing Subject, but it’s a happy nostalgia now, a hopeful one, a “two weeks and I’ll be home.” Home is no longer a lonely place, like in TBSL. The world is happy waiting (there’s no rush? No need to have everything figured out?). “Doors yellow, broken, blue.” You can’t bribe the door on the way to the sky a sky where Harry’s Golden sun awaits him, and now the sky door is broken, busted through, that blue door to a blue sky that never looked so blue.
We get another glimpse of She here; Subject remains You, Harry remains Harry, but there’s also a She who plays old hippies’ love songs and pretends to know the words; perhaps this is another Camille reference for narrative purposes, but I lean more towards this being another reference to She as Harry, exploring odd new music he’s never heard, trying not to be so pretentious about it but failing. (He’s such an Aquarius.) Most charmingly of all, the single whistler becomes two by the end of the song.
Treat People With Kindness: F Major. This is the most interesting piece in terms of text painting.
We start with CM6 - FM, then FM6/4 - BbM, then back to CM6 - FM, then we hold on the Am chord, and then repeat the whole thing. So analyzed in F Major this would be V6, I, I6/4, IV, V6, I, iii.
But. By using the I6 to IV, Harry plays with the idea of a V of IV, where you take the IV chord of the key and pretend it has its own dominant (V) and use the V of IV not as the I chord normally is used, but as a Leading Tone chord to IV.
ALL THAT TO SAY. He’s illustrating the lyrics. During “Maybe we can find a place” the chords are playing with dual resolutions. Where is the actual tonic? Is it F Major or B Flat Major? It’s ambiguous! We don’t know! We haven’t found our place yet!
But then! The bridge. “And if we’re here long enough” and look where we land, on a CM chord, then BbM, then FM, a solid V, IV, I progression. And THEN (bless this boy) on the word belong we get the same A minor chord (the iii) but we get a 7th added to the chord, a G, and Harry holds this G in the melody (plant new seeds in the melody), a note that VERY MUCH DOES NOT BELONG because in no universe does a iii chord in Major have a 7th added! And Harry not only ADDS but draws attention to this note, this note that doesn’t belong!!! Then this iii7 chord resolves to C Major (V), making the G note a chord tone, making it BELONG, making it fit perfectly.
GOD. Weep with me.
This is Over the Rainbow. This is Hair, this is Age of Aquarius. Somewhere there’s a place we can belong and feel good and people will celebrate and rejoice in us, someday a new age will dawn.
Harry is plunging into the deep end, dreaming, caught up in his good feelings and his euphoria in being “given second chances.” He’s tentative about admitting reckless hope to Subject; instead he says, “Maybe we can find a place to feel good?” Harry says he doesn’t need all the answers. He said in LU “do you know who you are” then in Falling “What am I now?” then in She “I don't know who she is” and now he’s at peace. He feels good in his skin, and he will keep on dancing.
Most personally, I think the sudden somber turn of the line “If our friends all pass away” is in reference to grief. He’s speaking to Subject, but also to himself. It will be okay, okay, okay. Harry can’t control his life, he doesn’t have everything figured out, but he’s come to accept that.
Side D
Fine Line: D Major. We come full circle, returning to the use of only three chords like at the start of the album. This time, though, Harry resolves to tonic in a repetitive pattern used for both the verses and chorus:
Bm, GM7, DM6/4, or vi, IV7, I
FL is the summation of the album, the thesis statement, the conclusion of the journey. Harry has endured tests of patience, and accepted that there are things he’ll never know. He’s trying to shake off trepidation (of plunging in the deep end? Of hoping?). He says “My hand’s at risk, I fold.” The poker analogy is an interesting one; Subject (presumably) has gotten past Harry’s poker face, has sussed out his fronts and acts and strategies, and Harry is left bare and exposed, vulnerable before them. He’s been brought to this point, but willingly he folds. He laments that “spreading you open is the only way of knowing you.” We should open up before it’s all too much. Harry is done fighting. He’s also done sleeping in the dirt. For the first time he’s not sugar-coating his words, avoiding their problems via sex and pretense and flowery language. He’s matured enough to admit, “Man, I hate you sometimes.”
Again we have the reappearance of She. Harry says to Subject, “We’ll get the drinks in, so I’ll get to thinking of her.” This She is something between them, within them now, another facet of his and Subject’s relationship. Harry is going to spend time thinking of Her. She, I believe, is a part of him.
A fine line is a balancing act, a tightrope, a suspension between extremes. But Harry calls out into the echo of the music, “We’ll be alright.” A declaration, a hope, a promise. Brass, strings, and a building crescendo, a cacophony of movie-credit-worthy emotion, sweeps us towards closure. Ethereal voices fade out, moving from dominant to tonic, but then a solitary piano plinks on a V chord, twice, hanging in the air, a question, an invitation, a hope.

I.
Marie was on the downstairs couch, a game of solitaire unfolding on the coffee table. She had made a pot of coffee midway through The Today Show. She drank it all and chased with a pinch of Antony’s weed. She sat crosslegged, slowly losing to herself in front of the muted television.
The house was remarkably unchanged, but Marie herself was a bit different from the last time she called it home. She was quieter. She had started watching a lot of television, and had begun losing energy she didn’t realize she had. She lost touch with the global tragedies she used to worry about. She didn’t read. She heard only other peoples’ music. She was 27, buzzing on her mom’s couch, waiting for her little brother to come home so she had someone to talk to. She also hadn’t won solitaire in three days.
She decided to clean a dewy-bottomed pineapple. It left a print on the counter from sweating on the granite. She found it was easy to be centered by these methodical tasks. Marie removed the crown. She lopped off the sweet-smelling bottom. The knife had a heavy, professional feel to it. Her parents always liked the finer things. The sticky juices spread out, seeping over, under, and into the teak board.
Time passed. She had expected someone to be home by sundown, but this didn’t seem like much of a possibility any longer. The heat of summer began to die off. She carried a grocery bag filled with the bits of pineapple skin and the spiky green dome out to the trash bins. A recent invasion of fruit flies was attributed to Marie’s laziness and she made sure to be extra clean. Also Thursday was trash day, so she needed it out tonight.
II.
There were tall pines, bare to the top. Like a Christmas tree, teetering. The bins were beside the garage in a latticed alcove. The arbor, her mother called it. The smell of suffocated trash snuck out the lid before she could even open it.
Removing the lid, she was hit: stagnant rainwater, forgotten produce. There was something less familiar, though. What caught her attention was the bag at the top of the trash pile. A plastic take-out bag covered with purple orchids, with scrawling gold type: Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
She was confused as to how someone ordered what seemed to be Thai or Vietnamese food without informing her. Antony didn’t have the money. Of course, Adrianne would have gotten her food, but then talked about the sodium content. The few leaves that had turned and fallen skittered in the driveway, clacking like dry dice.
A dismal curiosity got the better of her, and she bent into the putrid plastic maw. She tore open the sack, and a corner of a dishtowel stuck out. Marie lifted the bag out of the canister, into the darkening evening. It spun, dangling from the trussed handles. Fully removing its load, she began to discover the red. She reached some parchment paper at the center of the towels, with deep dark stains. She knew it was blood. You! the bag accused.
She heard the imperceptible hum of her mother’s mint-green hybrid pulling up the lengthy driveway. Marie tucked the bloodstained paper wads into the pockets of her sweatshirt, and turned to walk toward those crystal-clear headlights that cut the now fully-realized darkness.
Later on, her mother accosted her while she watched the 6:00 news. “Do you remember those anti-drug commercials, with the girl melting into the couch?” Adrianne perched one hand on her unmotherly hip, titled at a calculating angle. Marie stared at the television.
“You look like that.” She spun into the kitchen. A cork was drawn from bottle of Pinot Grig.
To be fair, she was correct. However, no mother should address her daughter in the way Adrianne had been for the past 27 years. She imagined her making snide remarks all her life, leaning over the edge of her crib and critiquing her large ears and thick hair. What a little gremlin, she’d cackle, tilting back her shock of black hair.
The hard-nosed news caster looked back at her from the flatscreen television set, a blurry cityscape green-screened behind his steely shoulders. “A true tragedy, we can only pray those responsible are brought swiftly to justice.” He looked off-screen, and began to say something else, when the program cut to commercials.
III.
It was a finger. Wrapped in parchment paper, wound up in Williams-Sonoma dishtowels. It was pale, yet bruised. The pale parts were the color of young ginger. The dark was a dirty purple. The finger nail seemed like it may fall off. She held it gently in the lamplight of her bedroom desk, smoke swirling out of the glass pipe she stole from Antony’s room. He hadn’t noticed, and that was a month ago. For the first time in her life Marie was afraid of her mother. Her bedroom, which Marie had not seen the inside of since she returned home, lay at the other
end of the unnecessarily large home. She was probably passed out, alone, in the bed she shared with Saul when he wasn’t away.
Marie ate a chunk of pineapple. It occurred to her that pineapple did, in fact, taste somewhat like a blend of pine needles and apples. She also considered the possibility that Antony was responsible for this. Her head nodded down, her eyelids flickered.
It lay on a meticulously folded edition of The Hartdon Bugle, occupying the spotlight of her bowed lamp. She thought it might at any minute remember where it was supposed to be, and limp off like Thing in The Addams Family, down some dusty black and white corridor and offstage. But it never moved, which is what bothered her most. Marie had always watched movies and television and wondered why nobody had contacted the police, who she assumed would arrive promptly and sort the whole thing before any damage was done. This didn’t make for good television, she knew.
She now wondered, rather abstractedly, who this finger might belong to. The coarse and bloody hairs, gritty with blood and struggle, lay somewhat flat and extremely disheveled. What would lead Adrianne to do this? Was someone else responsible, and if so, why did Marie assume her mother was?
The limp and mottled index finger – or was it a ring finger? – reminded Marie of something she once threatened to do. She had come home to live with her family after she left a man she had been with for five years. “I can do better,” is what she said.
She stayed up waiting for Antony, watching Law & Order re-runs. Each episode began with the discovery of the corpse. Somebody jogging through the park sees a foot sticking out from under a shrub. Some city workers dredge an urban mummy from a storm drain. A man playing fetch with his dog sees it running toward him with a severed leg.
Marie often found herself dissecting plot lines of T.V. shows. Back in Indiana, she was co-owner of a three-person company that built sets for community theater productions. She had always hoped she’d end up working for an NBC show or anything low-brow and high-paying. Many of the sets the company built were for plays in which people were murdered. She had long ago picked up the plot devices. “Let’s get this to the lab!” a tired detective barked down the alleyway.
IV.
A car pulled into the driveway. Self-consciously slow-moving and quiet, as if the vehicle itself were ashamed of being out so late. Antony snuck through a side door, which he closed with a click and a whisper. He must have heard the television, because he came right into the basement.
“Sis.”
“Antony. We need to talk.”
Marie and Antony stood next to the bins. They had disabled the security light, so when they went out to the arbor they didn’t attract any undue attention from their mother. Antony had laughed when she first told him the story, but stopped after he saw it himself. They passed a crooked joint between them, rolling clouds of smoke into the chilly air.
“It wasn’t her. She’s crazy, but …” he shook his head. “It wasn’t mom.”
Marie didn’t say anything, she just nodded. Antony crouched down around the trashcan, shining the flashlight on his phone throughout the gravel and on the siding of the garage. Perhaps looking for some blood-spray, or ransom note, or a wedding band that would solve the whole thing. He pinched the bridge of his nose in an overwrought expression of tiredness and anxiety.
Marie heaved a foggy sigh. “God damn it.”
That night, she wrapped the finger back up in its packaging, and put it in a gallon Ziploc bag, and placed it in the freezer of the mini-fridge upstairs that her mother never used. A hole burned in her gut. She went to bed without brushing her teeth. Her mouth tasted like stale pot smoke and a chunk of pineapple was wedged in her incisors.
V.
The next morning, Marie woke up to an empty house. Downstairs, a cooling pot of coffee waited. A note from her mother read:
Marie -
I made you coffee! Although, if you go for a run (which I pray you do) drink it afterward, in case of a BM. Could you put the bins at the curb? Get Up, Get Out, and GET SOMETHING.
wait until sundown to self-medicate.
– Mother
Friday turned out similar to Thursday. Marie sunk into the couch. Her left eye twitched, and she quickly knit her brow to correct this spasm. These eyebrows dominated her face. Her ex compared them to an actress’s in a way that raised questions. She heard the garbage truck doing its routine outside, and discreetly parted two of the venetian blinds to watch the arm dump the cans into the belly. She sank further into the couch, flexing her softening muscles inside the sweatsuit she wore the day before.
They had a nice dinner that night. The bulbs above the table hung from thick cords attached to the rafters at odd intervals: spreading like the legs of a giant spider. New houses can have ghosts as well as the old ones. They ate the leg of a lamb, smeared with an emerald blend of minced herbs. Marie ate pistachios out of a black bowl and threw the shells on her empty plate.
Antony, regardless of what he did in his free time, was actually a rather diligent student. Marie forgot exactly what they were celebrating, but all three of them were proud of his achievement. At one point Marie watched as her mother’s tight face softened in the lamplight, her elbows resting on the table, her birdlike hands clasped in an unlikely pose. For a moment, she thought she had imagined tears filling Adrianne’s eyes.
“It’s a nice, nice night. I don’t have to worry.” Adrianne went to bed shortly after letting that one slip.
VI.
Marie couldn’t find the moon. The wind blew cold from the far-off river, booming up through the pines. She looked up, and couldn’t distinguish the clouds from the sky. Depending on where she focused it could go either way.
She was sitting in what they called “Indian-style” when she was a kid. They probably didn’t call it that anymore. Across the sleeping yard, the snuffed security light was unable to betray her cautious movements. She was digging deep with a garden trowel. The earth would freeze up in about a month, so she had to do it now. The finger was in a Mason Jar, floating in a recipe for an all-purpose preservative she found online. She added a few sprigs of dill for a laugh.
Marie remembered burying a cat slightly deeper in the woods when she was seventeen. Adrianne and Saul had helped dig, as she stood by letting out the last of her tears. It was autumn then too, and she remembered the stillness of the pines and the golds and blushing reds of the oak leaves. Frowzy was about to have a bit of company, but just a bit.
She made sure she was right on the edge of the tree-line, at the foot of the sole paper birch, so she could remember the exact spot if she ever had to retrieve it. She caught the sloshing jar in the light of her cellphone one more time, the bobbing finger catching itself in the vortex of dill and brine. She set it gently into the soft, cold crater and began to fold it into the earth. When she was done, she built a cairn. The clouds separated themselves from the sky and exposed her to moonlight.

mmm yeah it is a bit trippy. hehe ITS TRUE THO. yeah sadly i think ur right, and tag blocking is probably a good idea. sometimes smut written well or not in excess is okay but goddamn when its abt 01 line and thats the whole fic... *silently blocks tags*
hehe i do that all the time lol this conversation is carrying on threads from a month ago :) mmm yeah ur probably right sadly, same. HA HE DIDNT HAVE A CHOICE and now i have someone to talk to abt them, so thats good! I KNOW felix was actually the one who got me into skz with his iconique gods menu line so i guess i have a soft spot for him. i always tell myself my bias is chan but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ guess im more whipped than id like to admit. mmm yeah that does make sense dw i hope they do that as well. YES king seungmin hIMSELF. GODDAMNIT DONT GET ME STARTED ON MINHO IN GODS MENU I DIDNT EVEN KNOW HE WAS PART OF THE GROUP UNTIL I STARTED GETTING MORE INTO THEM. BITCH (affectionate) THE LINE DISTRIBUTION HAS BEEN UTTER DOG SHIT but *deep breath* its better now so were moving on adn hoping it stays that way. sis same but i may or may not have gone thru a rlly depressed phase and actively sought out the elimination episodes so i could actually force some tears out of my emotionless shell of a heart but what cna you do? lmaoo i feel that irl, binnie deserves more vocal lines. yesss channies accent is rlly prominent then, i think also the way he structures his phrasing? is more english speaking than korean? but yeah i totally get what ur saying. AJKSAL lmao
okay then! im excited for whenever it gets done! (maybe tag me?) ahh the cold shrivelled heart of a dark au writer beats again at the thought of torturing another poor characters very soul (/j) :(( yeah that would suck not being able to see them. ohhh ur on the other hemisphere to me! were just going into spring rn. mmm smth to look forward to! YES you put it into words. they rlly are pretty independent from the company (remember how jyp rejected that other dudes songs after like 3 seconds and then how he was apparently nervous to show the song hed written to chan cos chan was so good at writing hits ahhh sweet revenge) mmmYES we rlly need a mute and remove notifications button for our brains dont we?
YES CORRECT i totally agree. some people jsut dont give it a try, adn assume its bad cos its korean smh racist assholes. yes! im coming up to my 6 month anniv actually! sis sAME, i feel like theyre being tugged into appealing to the western american market and theyre not staying as true to their artistic flair as a group, especially with only writing english songs atm. *sigh* ah well, at least theyre bringing recognition to the kpop world. AHUH dead on, theyre going to be discarded pretty soon and then where will bp be? theyll prob go solo paths which is rlly sad but what can you do when the company is run by a prideful asshole? yg is not going to last much longer in the big four if they keep this up.
hehe you get it. oooh very cool! whos ur ult? (sorry if youve said this before) mmmm yeah good decision, i feel liek thats probably a wise decision. this is my first album release as a kpop stan (not counting mixtape oh) so i think ill get it for sentiments sake. yeah! im excited for the new music! mingi was the one who got me into them, but atm my bias is seonghwa followed by san, wooyoung and ateez but jonghos high notes man *swoon* he, yeah atm ive got jake, jay, nikki, jungwon and sunoo down so just trying to get the rest :) heh, yeah kard i rlly only got into cos of bm, ive seen him like interacting with a lot of idols and he seemed nice so i decided to check out the group. ikr gunshot man *another swoon*
no noe! i didnt know what it was until i got it lol. thx toffee ill try and take that to mind :) yeah lol im on a waiting list thats not going to be free until late september so hopefully i can hold on until then. hope ur okay, that sounds like it sucks, hope you can find someone. maybe ill just take you along on my phone and the therapist can get a two for one patient deal lmaooo. mmm, sorry no i havent mentioned it before, i dont rlly talk abt it much. uhhh basically hypermobility? if you google it, it doesnt seem bad, jsut joint flexibility but ive got the severe end of the stick, leaning towards ehlers danlos syndrome so thats fun. basically it just makes it hard for me to exercise, run, jump, stand or just walk for long periods of time and gives me a lot of joint and muscle pain so... thats fun! but obviously so many other people have it worse than me, so i try not to complain. normally in young people it will improve as they get older, but my doctor said bc its severe in me, its unlikely to get much better. but again, i dont have the worst lot in the bunch, so its all g.
oh its good that its not the bad type of rain, a light sprinkling can be relaxing sometimes. aww thx darl, the concern is appreciated but it went pretty well and i managed not to cough too much on stage or kill myself trying to run around to the other side of the stage in the pouring rain so thats good! oooh tea buddies! my dogs a labradoodle, but shes a bit more of a feral poodle lol not much labrador in her at all, unless its her relentless urge to hunt down every bird that has ever walked this earth smh :((( hopefully they can come back on soon, does uni have dances?
ahhh a mood if i ever heard one. hopefully things will get better for you soon, ik anxiety sucks ass. ooh thats always good! when its sunny here, its always melt ur thongs to the pavement hot so the nicely cool sunny days are a lovely change. hehe impatience is not so good for you, but good for us that get to see ur beautiful theme early. ahh no worries, itll come eventually hopefully. and if not, then just things that make you not anxious are good. it doesnt have to be black or white, sometimes gray is good. mmmmm sames i have midterms this week to catch up on and then two weeks of end of terms so thats fun! i hope u can overcome that a little, heres some channie to be ur motivation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8LWyNjzOww. hah! i hear that all the time, he seems to be everywhere. did you see that tiktok of hans slowed back door rap, i stg it sounded EXACTLY like namjoon, it kinda scared me. also teh beginning of another day, sounds so much like joon i swear.
that reminds me! idk ur biases! i feel like this should be smth i should know so please! feel free to elaborate!
ahh im glad, i was worried it is. mmm same, so no hard feelings if either of us misses a day or smth. ill start worrying if weeks/months have gone by, but if its just a little while thats more than fine. ill just picture you studiously completing notes and i wont worry lol
<3 w.a. 🐺
at some point i really think i'm going to start blocking accounts because blocking tags won't be enough. i saw ask tags the other day and it just made me want to bleach my eyeballs.
i could talk about god's menu felix for hours man. the teaser for god's menu that featured his part on the bridge made me look forward to the mv release. you: biases chan, also you: lixiesbabyhands. yes you are more whipped than you think. i can't believe orange haired minho was given NOTHING during that era but they kind of made up for it in the b-sides. i also hope it stays that way. the distribution for this era was pretty fair.
"torturing another poor character's soul" in all honesty, i used to live for this. 2017 me leading up to early 2020 wrote nothing but angst. i have another aussie friend on twt and tbh i'm still really (O.o) about the seasons! jyp should be terrified skz could easily take over that company. heck if skz grow old and start their own company, they'd probably do a great job at running it. PLEASE. i have issues on muting/notifications both mentally and in real life. sometimes, i just wish to disappear.
some people in my country are just disgusting tbh. not only racist but homophobic too. they label kpop as 'gay' and it DISGUSTS me. it's a problematic behavior/mindset people in my country need to fucking get rid of. anyway, HELP ME 6 MONTHS??? and i've been in this shit for like a decade eye. tbh, i’m not fond of kpop groups trying to appeal to the western audience :// it feels like they’re losing their identity in a way. yes recognition but at what cost? yg has my favorite groups but that’s one shitty company when it comes to promoting.
okay my ult! it’s haechan from nct but i consider chan an ult too. like a close second above my whopping list of kpop boys. oh yes! you should get the album just for like a keepsake? remembrance? how did mingi appeal to you? omg did you start getting interested in ateez back when he was still on hiatus? NOT YOU BIASING THE SAME PEOPLE I DID WHEN I FIRST STARTED STANNING. the infamous ateez thot-line. jongho is easily one of the best fourth gen vocalists out here, no one can change my mind :( good luck with memorizing the rest of enhypen! just in time for the comeback too. i hope i’ll get into kard soon but i’m pretty content (and a tad bit overwhelmed) with the amount of groups i stan right now.
please hold on though, feel free to vent here if you like. thanks for the offer tho HAHA but like i’ll try to get checked here too when the cases die down a bit. i’m sorry to hear about your condition though :( please don’t ever overwork yourself to the point that your joints/muscles would ache. it’s completely valid to complain about it tho. i get that you have others in mind but keeping that mindset really doesn’t do you (like you internally) any better? so if you need to, vent your frustrations out and don’t keep it in.
oh my god, about your performance last sunday. was the stage out in the open? glad you didn’t cough too much and did well on your concert. i’m proud of you! i can never understand dogs and poor birds T_T uni doesn’t have dances unfortunately. i think there’s just one party at the end like a graduation ball. what year are you in anyway? if it’s something that you’re fine with sharing. if not, it’s cool.
good luck with your exams! and thanks for the link! AHA what a cutie. i think he does this motivation thing once in a while during his lives and it’s just comforting. yeah joon and han my irl just freaked when we made that discovery. ult crumbs for her. oh god not me forgetting about every biases when you asked. you can ask for my biases in a few groups just list down the one’s you’re interested in knowing.
i missed yesterday because i was grinding and finishing what if we stay + school work. finally did it today. i’m sure i’ll reply in like a day or two, definitely not a month unless i state otherwise. if i ever decide to abandon this blog, i’ll let you know.

Accidental Exposure to Docetaxel Overdose - Case Report and Review of the Literature
Authored by Amr Muhammed
Abstract
Since the 1990s, docetaxel plays an expanding role in the treatment of high-risk breast cancer, lung cancer, advanced gastric and metastatic prostate cancer [1,2]. Hundreds of publications have mentioned the diverse range of docetaxel toxicity profile and the increased likelihood of bone marrow suppression, GIT and skin toxicity with dose escalation beyond 100mg/m2 [2]. Despite that, very few authors pointed to cases of docetaxel overdose and proper medical intervention in these cases [3]. This publication aims to point at one of the cases of accidental docetaxel overdose secondary to miscalculation at the clinical pharmacy ward and the medical intervention taken with the case.
Keywords: Docetaxel overdose; Docetaxel toxicity; Chemotherapy overdose; Taxane toxicity; Taxane overdose
Abbreviations: ANC: Absolute Neutrophil Count; CYP: Cytochrome P Enzymes; D: Day; GIT: Gastrointestinal Tract; SCLC: Small Cell Lung Cancer
Introduction
Docetaxel is a hydrophilic semisynthetic analogue of paclitaxel, originally, produced from Taxus Baccata's needles. It facilitates the assembly and stabilization of cellular microtubules through blockage of their depolymerization process. This enhanced stability interferes with their essential arrangement during cell cytokinesis leading to arrest the cell cycle [4].
Docetaxel is metabolized and deactivated by CYP 450 enzymes family, namely, 3A4 and 3A5 then excreted mainly into the bile [5]. The efficacy of the docetaxel detoxifying hepatic elimination depends on several factors such as, the genetic polymorphisms of CYP3A, the concomitant use of CYP3A inducers or inhibitors and Pgp inhibitors that affect Pgp, the membrane transport protein of docetaxel inactive products, in biliary canaliculi [4,6].
Although thousands of publications mentioned and discussed docetaxel related toxicity such as BM depression, GIT and skin toxicity especially patients receiving doses beyond 100mg/m2, the literature lacks any reports discussing the issue of docetaxel overdose and the proper clinical management of such condition [2,3].
Case Report
A 53-years-old male, ECOG-Performance status 1, with a history of refractory Stage-IV SCLC failed on Etoposide-Cisplatin, was admitted to the hospital with grade-3 diarrhoea and fatigue six days post-Docetaxel-Cisplatin infusion. Accidentally, the patient received overdosed docetaxel at 175mg/m2, a total of 280mg on D1, given on 1-hour infusion and dosed cisplatin at 70mg/m2, total dose of 110mg, given on 2-hour infusion post- 2000 c.c. fluid hydration.
At admission time, his physical examination revealed grade-3 diarrhoea, dehydration and neutropenia 0.4x109/L and grade-2 mucositis of the GIT. Liver and kidney function tests were unremarkable. He received adequate IV hydration, broad-spectrum antibiotics; levofloxacin 500mg/IV/24hr and metronidazole 500mg/IV/6hr, GC-CSF factor; filgrastim 5|ig/ kg/day/SC and other measures against mucositis. Five days post admission, his diarrhoea was controlled, and his ANC rise to 3.5x109/L. he kept under observation for another 5 days then discharged from the hospital.
Discussion
Docetaxel is a hydrophilic semisynthetic analogue of paclitaxel is produced from Taxus Baccata's needles. It produces its pharmacological action through stabilization of cellular microtubules leading to cell cycle arrest during mitosis. Thus, docetaxel toxicity and side effect profile are commonly related to tissues with rapid turnover; bone marrow, skin and gut mucosa.
We described a case of accidentally miscalculated docetaxel dose, given in docetaxel/cisplatin combination, in 53-years old male patient with a history of SCLC failed on first-line Etoposide/Cisplatin. He developed grade-3 diarrhoea, grade-2 buccal mucositis, and neutropenia at 0.4x109/L. The patient was hospital admitted and received adequate fluid hydration, broad-spectrum antibiotics and hemopoietic growth factor till improvement and discharge.
Till now, no antidote to docetaxel overdose or a predefined standard of care management to cases with overdose. Thus, monitoring the vital signs, adequate hydration, broad-spectrum antibiotics, GC-CSF and other symptoms directed supportive measures remain the only possible guide for dealing with these patients.
Conclusion
Although docetaxel overdose is a rare medical condition to be seen in current practice, it is still a serious medical condition that needs to be dealt with extreme caution. Since no antidote has been identified to such condition, supportive treatment based on symptoms and guards against neutropenia are the best of care in current practice.
In this case, the early attention to the patient clinical condition, adequate intervention through monitoring of vital signs, enough hydration, use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and GC-CSF factor were enough intervention to facilitate early recovery.
Following this accidental docetaxel-overdose, new restrictions were implemented in the clinical pharmacy and drug preparation unit and chemotherapy ward to prevent such accidents from being happened again.

British Museum Great Court Building in London
The Great Court at the British Museum turns 20 Date built: 2000 Design: Foster + Partners
Photographs by Nigel Young / Foster + Partners
The British Museum’s Great Court turned twenty on Sunday 6 December 2020. As the departure point for Museum visitors, it has transformed the experience of the Museum. Since it opened, 113 million people have walked under its arched glass roof with its 3,312 triangular panes of glass. On social media, it is the most photographed space in the Museum.
The Great Court is a two-acre space at the heart of Robert Smirke’s Museum. Originally it was conceived as a garden for promenading and discussing but it only lasted for a few years before his brother Sydney constructed the famous Round Reading Room at its centre. As lean-to book storage buildings were added, the Court was lost to the public until 1997 when the Library moved to St Pancras. The opportunity was then realised with our master plan to open it up for the public once more.
Marking the 20th anniversary, Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman, Foster + Partners, said: “The rediscovery of the amazing courtyard of the British Museum – the Great Court – and its rebirth as a new social focus followed what I have often called the historic tradition of change, which respects the past while steadfastly reflecting the spirit of its own time. The simple act of opening it up as the spatial heart of the museum was a catalyst in the Museum’s reinvigoration. The celebration of its 20th anniversary this year is a reflection of its success and we join in congratulating the British Museum for its foresight and vision.”
Spencer de Grey, Head of Design, Foster + Partners, said, “The opening of the Great Court symbolised the excitement about the future that characterised the new Millennium. As a public space, it gave the Museum a new, much needed focus with a new public route through the building and much needed education, cafes, social and community facilities. Every time I visit the Museum, I’m heartened to see the many diverse groups enjoying its naturally lit, sheltered public space with its restored magnificent neo-classical architecture, just as so many others have over the past twenty years.”
Foster + Partners won the competition to reimagine the museum in 1994. The Great Court is in a continuing tradition by the practice working with numerous historic structures such as the Royal Academy of Arts and HM Treasury in London, and the Reichstag in Berlin. Central to our approach is to breathe new life into these buildings as part of our strong sustainable agenda.
The Great Court was opened by HM The Queen on 6 December 2000. At the opening ceremony, she hailed it as “a landmark of the new Millennium” and said “In the life of the nation, the British Museum is a remarkable phenomenon. It is an institution which has had a worldwide reputation for nearly 250 years and it is an enduring source of learning, inspiration and pleasure for millions of people who visit every year from this country and from overseas.
She added: “The Great Court will benefit the millions of people who come to the British Museum every year. We can be confident that it will become a landmark associated with the new millennium.”
To celebrate 20 years of the Great Court, Foster + Partners’ photographer has revisited the Great Court to capture the space 20 years on.
Facts about the Great Court
1. In the original Robert Smirke design for the Museum, the central space within the quadrangle of buildings was supposed to be a garden and an open courtyard for promenading. However, from 1852 lots of bookstacks were built in the space, and along with the Round Reading Room it became the home of the library department.
2. The library which was homed in the courtyard was formally separated into a new body – the British Library – in 1972. It wasn’t until 1997 when it moved to a new home at St Pancras. The Library’s move facilitated the Great Court development.
3. It takes about two weeks to clean the whole roof. It gets cleaned every three months because being in the centre of London, it gets very dirty. Cleaners can’t walk unaided on the roof – instead they have to be hooked on by a harness to a network of cables that run over the roof, which can’t be seen from below.
4. The current design is not the first at the Museum to have proposed using a glass roof. In the early 1850s, Charles Barry, joint architect of the Palace of Westminster, proposed roofing over the courtyard with sheets of glass supported on 50 iron pillars. Inspired by the famous Crystal Palace of 1851, it was to have served as a Hall of Antiquities, but never came to fruition.
5. The roof is made up of 3,312 individual panels of glass, and no two panels are the same shape. They are held together by four miles of steel and there’s enough glass up there to glaze around 500 household greenhouses.
6. The roof stands 26.3 metres above the floor at its highest point – that’s nearly as tall as six of London’s famous double-decker buses.
7. At two acres, it’s the largest covered square in Europe.
8. The 315 tonnes of glass that make up the roof are supported by a 478-tonne steel structure – in total, that’s equivalent to seven-and-a-half blue whales
9. During construction of the new space, 20,000 m3 of demolition material was removed from inside the courtyard, equivalent to twice the volume of the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery or twelve Olympic swimming pools.
10. On completion, the redesign grew the Museum floor space by 40%. For the first time in more than 150 years, the new two-acre Great Court gave visitors the chance to move freely around the main floor of the Museum.
11. The Great Court can also get dark when the roof is covered in snow, so floodlights are fixed around the top of the Round Reading Room, illuminating the space.
12. The cafés in the Great Court serve over 1 million hot drinks each year.
13. Famous guests to the Great Court include HRH The Prince of Wales, Nelson Mandela, Sir David Attenborough, President George W Bush, Angelina Jolie and Katy Perry.
14. In 2004 Great Court hosted a special display of costumes from the Wolfgang Petersen epic film Troy. These included the armour worn by Brad Pitt as Achilles, one of Helen of Troy’s gowns – played by Diane Kruger, and costumes worn by Eric Bana as Hector, Peter O’Toole as Priam and Brian Cox as Agamemnon. The film went on to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
15. When The Queen opened the Great Court in 2000, our Visitor Services staff had the chance to put on the Windsor Livery, which can be worn on special occasions. It was granted to the Museum by King William IV in 1835, and consists of a blue coat with a scarlet collar and cuffs.
16. Engraved into the floor is an extract from ‘The Two Voices’ by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It says “and let thy feet, millenniums hence, be set in midst of knowledge”.
17. The £100 million project was supported by grants of £30 million from the Millennium Commission and £15.75 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
18. The after-party of the world premiere of the James Bond film Spectre was held in the Great Court, with a Day of the Dead theme. All the stars including Daniel Craig attended.
19. In 2008, the Olympic Torch passed through the Great Court as part of its world tour from Olympia in Greece to the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
20. The space has been the home of numerous installations over the last 20 years, including the Tree of Life in 2005, built from decommissioned firearms from the Mozambican civil war, by artists Kester, Hilario Nhatugueja, Fiel dos Santos and Adelino Serafim Maté. Other installations have included a scale model of the ancient site of Olympia in 2004, a Volkswagen Beetle in 2014, Zak Ové’s Moko Jumbie figures in 2015, and Esther Mahlangu’s BMW Art Car 12 in 2016.

IBFAN at WHO's Executive Board: tackling commercialisation of health care systems
IBFAN with the People’s Health Movement Watchers who take notes of the whole meeting.  Bravo!  From the left for PHM: Maninder Pal Singh, Gargeya Telakapalli, Alexexandre Gajardo, Anna Peiris, Sarai Keestra. IBFANers Patti, Fedora Bernard and Alessia Bigi. PHM again: Stuti Pant, Giulia Loffreda, and Damir Martinovi.
Alessia Bigi, Speaking on Item 5.6 Climate Change
Patti Rundall speaking on Anti Microbial Resistance Item 5.8
Good article in Health Policy Watch
            24th January – 1st February
I’ve been at the WHO Executive Board meeting since 24th January –  joining IBFAN GIFA colleagues Alessia Bigi and Fedora Bernard and partner NGOs (members of the G2H2 Geneva Hub):  People’s Health Movement, Third World Network, IOGT, Medicins sans Frontieres, Medicus Mundi, Wemos, Oxfam, Knowledge Ecology International and Drugs for Neglected Diseases.
Its been a long complex meeting with big transformational cross-cutting issues on the agenda and enormous health challenges. All the documents, NGO statement and live webcasts are available from this link
IBFAN and many of the NGOs are warning WHO of the risks of getting too close to corporations and the need for WHO to develop a sound Conflicts of Interest (COI) policy that will address WHO’s own institutional COI.
Here are some of the items we covered:
Agenda 5.5  Universal Health Coverage:
B144_12-en B144_13-en    IBFAN UHC Statement
Agenda 5.6 Health Environment and Climate Change:
B144_15-en   IBFAN Climate Change Statement
Agenda 5.8 Anti Microbial Resistance:
144_19-en.    IBFAN AMR Statement
Agenda 5.8 Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Disease B144_20-en  IBFAN NCD Statement
Agenda 7.3 Engagement with Non State Actors  FENSA1B144_36-en FENSA2B144   IBFAN FENSA Statement
  TEXTS
Agenda Item 5.5. Universal Health Coverage
As one of WHO’s longest-standing public interest partners IBFAN strongly supports the principle of publicly funded UHC and welcomes WHO’s acknowledgement that primary health care is its foundation.
However, that so little attention is paid to the need for conflict of Interest safeguards is worrying. WHO’s keenness to involve the corporations and its fear of being seen as ‘risk averse’ now seems more evident than its concern about being seen as cavalier, even negligent.
Of course WHO cannot police what happens at country level, however it does have an obligation to warn Member States of the risks of inappropriate commercial involvement in health care services.  If it doesn’t the public might surely question its independence, integrity and trustworthiness.
There are countless examples of patient being misled and health being harmed because of such involvement.   To take just one – baby food company phone apps that advise mothers how to feed their babies.  If WHO does not want to be seen as endorsing such things it needs to repeatedly warn of the risks of  inappropriate sponsorship.
Innovation that can genuinely advance health is to be welcomed –  but corporations do not have a monopoly on innovative ideas.  Unless their interventions are carefully screened and monitored by truly independent bodies, their risks to health and increased costs to services can sabotage public health goals.
If corporations are involved in monitoring and reporting – as they might be in a Public Private Partnership – the benefits of interventions are likely to be promoted above the risks. Companies are soon  trusted to help with health care planning, given access to personal data and everything else they need to expand their markets.
Meanwhile the publicly funded health care systems that exist in many countries are under attack from those pushing privatised systems.
This is a slippery slope that needs to be navigated very carefully and WHO has a key role to play in getting it right. Thank you

Agenda Item EB 5.6: Health, environment and climate change (CCB144_15-en)
IBFAN welcomes the opportunity to comment on the draft strategy that suggests new approaches to change the “the way we manage our environment with respect to health and well-being”.
In the case of breastfeeding much more should be done to protect, promote and support it.  Breastfeeding, a practice that has no carbon footprint, contributes to water conservation and helps in the reduction of air pollution is all too often ignored by conservationists.
While we are calling for the reduction of avoidable environmental risks, global sales of breastmilk substitutes (BMS) increase rapidly every year, boosted by sophisticated marketing against which breastfeeding cannot compete. These products are, of course, necessary for babies who are not breastfed, but the fact is they need energy to manufacture, materials for packaging, fuel for transport distribution and water, fuel and cleaning agents for daily preparation and use and generate Green House Gases.
More than 4000 litres of water are estimated to be needed along the production pathway to produce just 1 kg of formula powder.
If breastfeeding was considered a public health intervention for climate change prevention and mitigation perhaps more would be done to end misleading marketing of baby food companies and to support women who want to breastfeed.
Climate change is linked to extreme weather conditions and environmental health emergencies: breastfeeding is a lifeline in emergencies but it needs positive action by governments to be protected
At the very minimum all governments should fully implement the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and relevant WHA Resolutions. Goal 12 of the draft strategy,[1] on Governance, should also include the requirement that national and local governments set up proper safeguards against conflicts of interest and commercial influence when facilitating “cross-sectorial cooperation”.  Thank you
IBFAN’s 6-country study of the impact of formula production on GHG emissions
[1] 12. Governance. National and local governments (for example, of cities) have mechanisms in place that facilitate cross-sectoral cooperation and integrate health in all relevant policies and ensure that they fulfil their obligations to provide safe environments for their citizens.

Agenda Item 5.8. Non Communicable Diseases
IBFAN has worked with WHO on NCDs since 2003 and knows that the threat to public health cannot be solved by national policies alone. It needs an international solution to tackle the power of multinational food corporations – who all share the same tactics as the tobacco industry.
WHO’s courage to continue its work on baby food code, tackling conflicts of interest and integrating the Code and WHA Resolutions into Codex trading standards,  is an important model to follow that continues to save many lives. Thank you.
Sadly,  WHO’s work on NCD’s has in many ways been derailed and is now becoming unsustainable. WHO’s  “fresh working relationship” with the food and related industries seems to be promoting the Public Private Partnership model – without the resources to identify and manage the risks. Without such scrutiny WHO’s name is being misused and its health goals undermined.
WHO should be working with governments, small farmers, social movements and others to prevent soil depletion, deforestation and land-grabbing. It must encourage the healthy, biodiverse and culturally appropriate food that is best for humans and the planet. Instead WHO seems transfixed with persuading food corporations to produce slightly less harmful – but still highly processed products and risky technological fixes.
IBFAN has sat on the European Commission’s Diet Platform for over 10 years and has seen its risks and limitations.  Sound ideas are displaced by voluntary, here today, gone tomorrow promises and effective regulatory action is delayed.
Governments must be in the driver’s seat and have access to hard data.  Asking them to put ‘engagement’ before risk assessment is asking for trouble.  We strongly urge a rethink on WHO’s strategy on NCDs.  Thank you
______________
Agenda Item 5.8. Anti-Microbial resistance
As an NGO that has attended Codex meetings for more than 20 years, IBFAN is pleased that WHO is providing evidence to support the strengthening of Codex trading standards and texts to minimize and contain antimicrobial resistance throughout the animal and food chain, including through processing.  We hope that all Member States will recognize that this is a threat to global health security that no country can eliminate on its own and that there are inevitable implications for global trade. Codex is a difficult fora that is dominated by powerful corporations and industrialised countries that protect their interests. WHO needs to be there and strong to protect the global health goal in these complex negotiations
Among the many factors that increase the risk of AMR are poor animal husbandry and crop management, pharmaceutical promotion and over the counter sales that encourage inappropriate use of anti-biotics. We note that only 64 countries have limited the use of critically important antimicrobials (human and animal) for growth promotion in animal food production.
Strong health care systems, cross agency action, surveillance and regulation of all the industries involved is clearly essential.  However,  care must be taken to ensure that any public private collaborations do not muddy the waters, slow everything down and lead to weaker controls and action.   There is evidence that a higher dependence on the private health sector and higher density of private health clinics is associated with increased AMR due to frequent overuse of antibiotics.
Lastly, we support the efforts to promote WASH components within National Action Plans to reduce the incidence of infections. WASH, alongside stricter marketing regulations will protect breastfeeding – a practice that is critically important in reducing the incidence of infections in infants and young children. Thank you

Agenda item  7.3. Engagement with non-State actors (FENSA).
We were asked to limit statements to one minute:
IBFAN supports Medicus Mundi’s highlighting of the extent of private funding of NSAs. It is essential that genuine civil society participation in governing body meetings is not undermined. Tobacco is not the only risk!
The lack of transparency caused by the term NSA could be helped with different coloured badges, distinguishing civil society NGOs from businesses.
Good that an evaluation of FENSA will be carried out in 2019.  Please can this be a thorough, public and transparent review involving conflict of interest experts and critical civil society organisations.
Most urgently please correct the definition of what a Conflict of Interest is and develop a comprehensive policy that addresses WHO’s own institutional COI.
Without it FENSA is transformed into a framework that legitimizes and encourages undue entanglements and funding opportunity to replace the untied funding from assessed contributions that WHO so urgently needs.  Thank you

I have a financed car can I take my car out of circulation to stop paying insurance?
Ok, my car has been broken for like 5 or 6 months already. It hasn't been driven at all. Right now it has an expensive fix. I was waiting for my taxes to fix it but I had my identity stolen so I may not get my taxes until December, if even that soon. Anyways, long story short...it's an expensive fix, about $2000...which I don't have. I've been paying for both the car and the insurance every month with the car not even moving. I know I have to continue paying the car. I'm going to verify with my bank, but I'd prefer not to get them involved until I have some details. Is it possibly to take my car completely out of circulation by turning in the license plate and then stop paying insurance until I fix it? I assume theres no need to have insurance if the car doesn't have a tag so it can't be driven. I live in Florida, if that changes anything. Paying $280 for insurance and not driving the car makes me sick...its worse than paying the actual car and not driving it.""

Where can I get cheap health insurance in NYC as an individual with a relatively low deductible & low premium?
Is that even possible? My reasoning is this: I am 26 and I am self-employed. I am basically just looking for a bare bones plan that will have the lowest premium possible and I actually care more about emergency care than doctors visits. You see, I don't get sick often and don't plan to go to the doctor a whole lot...I just want something in case of an accident and the whole low premium w/ high deductibles thing won't help me...I'll be stuck with a sky high bill to pay off if I stay in the hospital. I'd rather have emergency coverage and simply pay out of pocket for a doctor if I have to. Is there a plan out there in NY that fits this? Anyone know? HELP! ""When starting new car insurance, can insurers decline no claims bonus due to 2 motorway speeding convictions?""
Hello, I am trying to arrange vehicle insurance. I have contacted A&L with regards to their car insurance. Basically I have just changed jobs, where I had company cars for the last 6 years with no claims. I asked A&L if they would accept this as no claims, and they said they would if I could provide a letter from my previous employers stating dates, that I was sole user, that I no longer have policy and that it expires within last 3 months etc. I have provided them with the letter which covers all areas requested. They have now replied back to me saying that they can't accept the no claims, as I have 2 SP30 (Motorway speeding) convictions within the last 5 years, which means they will not accept the no claims. Is this acceptable? I though no claims were only relinquished if a claim in made against a policy, not because I have a couple of run-of-the-mill speeding convictions. Thanks in advance, James""

The Great Court at the British Museum turns 20 Date built: 2000 Design: Foster + Partners

The courtyard at the centre of the British Museum was one of Londons long-lost spaces. Originally an open garden, soon after its completion in the mid-nineteenth century it was filled by the round Reading Room and its associated bookstacks. Without this space the Museum was like a city without a park. This project is about its reinvention.
In terms of visitor numbers over five million annually – the British Museum is as popular as the Louvre in Paris or the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In the absence of a centralised circulation system this popularity caused a critical level of congestion throughout the building and created a frustrating experience for the visitor. The departure of the British Library to St Pancras provided the opportunity to clear away the bookstacks and to recapture the courtyard to give the building a new public focus.
The Great Court is entered from the Museums principal level, and connects all the surrounding galleries. Within the space – the largest enclosed public space in Europe – there are information points, a bookshop and a caf. At its heart is the magnificent space of the restored Reading Room, now an information centre and library of world cultures, which for the first time in its history is open to all. Broad staircases encircle the Reading Room and lead to a gallery for temporary exhibitions with a restaurant above. Below the level of the Court are the new Sainsbury African Galleries, an education centre, and facilities for schoolchildren.

The glazed canopy that makes all this possible is a fusion of state-of-the-art engineering and economy of form. Its unique geometry is designed to span the irregular gap between the drum of the Reading Room and the courtyard facades, and forms both the primary structure and the framing for the glazing, which is designed to maximise daylight and reduce solar gain.
As a cultural square, the Court also resonates beyond the confines of the Museum, forming a new link in the pedestrian route from the British Library to Covent Garden and the river. To complement this civic artery, the Museums forecourt has been freed from cars and restored to form a new public space. Like the Great Court it is open to the public from first thing in the morning to early evening, creating a major amenity for London.

Special Exhibitions Centre The Museum has built an enviable reputation in recent years for once in a lifetime exhibitions such as The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army and Hadrian: Empire and Conflict as well as smaller, thought-provoking shows highlighting contemporary middle-eastern art, Japanese crafts and American print-making.
The Museum has been able to use the Reading Room as a temporary exhibition venue to house some of these exhibitions but is in urgent need of a flexible purpose-built exhibition space to accommodate more visitors to ensure a comfortable and engaging experience. The North West Development includes a temporary exhibition space of over 1,000 sqm which will allow the Museum to cement its status as a leader in curating, designing and displaying special exhibitions.
Science and Conservation Laboratories The British Museum has the largest conservation and science department in the country, covering an extensive range of materials, both ancient and modern, from the Museum’s huge and varied collection. The department is internationally recognised for its ground-breaking work, creating new knowledge and new techniques that are shared with museums thought the UK and the world.
Current facilities are in need of updating and the state of the art laboratories, studios and library facilities in the development will ensure the Museum can continue to care for and research its collection. It will also allow for an expansion of the Museum’s highly regarded conservation training programme.
Logistics and Collection handling The British Museum is committed to lending objects from the collection within the UK and across the world. The Museum lends more of its collection than any other museum or gallery, 4,000 objects to 150 institutions in 2008. A dedicated area for the preparation of loan material will ensure the safety of the thousands of objects brought into, and sent out of the Museum every year. Secure loading bays will provide direct access to the new special exhibition space, conservation and science facilities and the rest of the Museum.
Study collection storage The world collection of the British Museum includes upwards of seven million artefacts. The majority of these objects comprise the study collection, objects which are not on permanent display for conservation reasons or because they are primarily an academic resource. On-site facilities to house the study collections will provide improved access for students, academics and the public, as well as modern, environmentally controlled systems able to maintain the stable conditions necessary for the preservation of objects.
