I finished reading 4 books from Earth's Children series. The last three were really hard to read. After finishing Plains of Passage, I have come to really appreciate Clan of the Cave Bear as a standalone. I miss all the Neanderthals and Ayla's character arc. Gotta do some fanart!

PS. I MISS IZA! Best character in the series.

NO human ever figured out they could strike iron pyrite to get sparks?#NO ONE ever figured out they could make a needle?#She invented the arrow too (or whatever that thin short spear things they did? not the spear thrower #I will not be surprised if she ends up inventing the wheel in the next two books #also domesticating animals #also there were so many traumatizing scenes #three different rape scenes in book 4 !!???#I was going to throw up #It just.. got very uncomfortable to read #it changed me #so I now I'm thinking about the first book #yes it has all these same elements from the later books but they were sparse and were actually part of the plot #part of the character development. in other books they were just things that happened. Like. the characters are not impacted by it at all.#you could read the end of the book and nothing about the characters change after witnessing these traumatic experiences #they are the same from beginning to end #uh um sorry for the rant O_O #anyways I miss izaaaa #bye

With their intended voyage into the void only a few days out, Arsay thought it the upmost importance that she steal her partner away to Kugane, that they might share one more fond memory together should things not turn out the way they plan in the thirteenth. It was as they crossed the very same bridge the miqo'te had once sat on together two years prior when Arsay gifted Y'shtola with a bracelet matching that of her own. A token of endearment which, Arsay confessed, she would have given to her fellow scion back then, had nerves not gotten the best of her. While their relationship has undoubtedly changed since the initial purchase of the jewellery, the sentiment remained the same. Y'shtola was someone who Arsay loved dearly and she will forever be grateful to have the seeker's life intertwined with her own. No matter where their free spirits took them, they would always hold each other in their hearts. A promise Y'shtola was more than willing to keep. She slipped the the string of beads around her wrist without a second thought. They were never to come off, not even when the two decided to delay their return to Radz-at-Han in favour of a private bath at the dead of night.

one of my favorite things a customer has ever accused me of was 6 years ago when I worked at Rita's (an Italian ice and frozen custard chain) a woman who came in every day with her husband and ordered the exact same thing insisted that the cups were smaller than usual and when we told her that they weren't she started screaming at me and my shift lead that we were "obviously shrinking the cups back there"

I still wonder constantly how she thought we were doing that

#still remember their order too. 2 large cherry and vanilla gelatis (vanilla custard on bottom then cherry ice then more custard)#her husband looked extremely apologetic the whole time and left us a couple extra dollars for a tip #my manager ended up giving her the ritas corporate number so shed leave lmfaooo but it was insane #her husband had bought the ices from me then she stormed back up with him a few minutes later demanding i remake them #because she insisted i had not given her a large cup and she knew bc she came every day and got the same thing #so i pulled out 1 cup from each of our 3 sizes and showed her that hers was obviously the large #and she kept insisting i was lying and asking for a manager. so i got my shift lead and brought her up front #which she was already annoyed about bc she was in the middle of making new italian ice which is a whole process #she kept telling her we hadnt gotten new cups in weeks so they definitely werent different #and the lady just yelled 'well then you 2 must be shrinking them back there!' and my lead started laughing in her face #which just made her more mad but it was unbelievably funny. still is. like how and why would we do this ma'am

Alizayd al Qahtani is the fucking best. There is no contest. He's empathetic, he's a sass machine, he's got a backbone made of righteous steel, he's a nerd raised to be a jock and was the best zulfiqari of his generation through sheer determination. He's the smartest (and tallest) man in the room that loves to help people and is also an oblivious social loser. He's a math genius and an economic wizard that outsmarted the Royal Treasury's best accountants as a teenager to secretly fund and make the Tanzeem's illegal transactions untraceable, and *During a Recession* got a millennia-old decrepit hospital to be completely rebuilt and functional in like 6 months. He also actually listens to people, and did possibly the most romantic thing in the series by building Nahri her private Cairo-themed office. He's self-sacrificing and self-denying to a fault and all he wants to do is fix things (and swim, and read), and he perfectly fits into soldier life and civilian life.

My man has the best character arc of the trilogy as he learns and grows past his early prejudice and indecision while sharpening his best traits. He is constantly reevaluating himself and his actions while still holding on to what matters to him, like his faith and his idealism that Daevabad can be improved. Even in the depths of his bitterness or grief, he always returns to trying to do the right thing, and not holding unrelated people responsible for the actions of others. He has the best motivational speeches in the series. His great grandpa is a crocodile and their scenes together are hilarious.

My man Alizayd has some Lord of the Rings: Return of the King-level epicness, in how he is descended from both Zaydi al Qahtani and the marid-blessed Armah. Zaydi, who rallied the djinn world against the genocidal Nahids and overthrew them to take Daevabad 1400 years earlier; and his ally Armah who commanded the marid to help take the city and Suleiman's Ring, and made the ultimate sacrifice by staying allied with the djinn. Ali is constantly compared to Zaydi in City of Brass and Kingdom of Copper, but there's this steady transfer of similarities to Armah in Kingdom of Copper and Empire of Gold, until Ali is truly representing both sides combined as he aids Nahri and a global army that he put together in three days to once again take back Daevabad from a genocidal Nahid. The man is a fucking legend, and with any other author or director it would unquestionably be at the forefront of the story. Instead it hides in background details foe readers to piece together, like it's barely worth mentioning.

This is because my man Ali also has the self-confidence/self-esteem of a shy beetle hiding six feet under the earth, and the author's subtle/vague writing style and inability to stand up for what she's trying to say when people misunderstand has created... how do I word this... A lot of wiggle room for bullshit?

Ali gets dragged a lot for being self-righteous and a fanatic, because characters that are threatened by him in the book call him that, and readers parrot it without any consideration or critical thought. Is it self-righteous to be against slavery? Or to create personal boundaries regarding drinking and premarital sex? Is it fanaticism when he argues against corruption, or practices his religion *in a completely normal way?* I dare say no! But Ali is both black and muslim, so he gets a shit load of shit from every corner, and with the author unable to really clear things up and too cowardly to even admit that Ali is her favorite character without immediately asking everyone to forget she said that (Oops. Also: no), it makes me very, very concerned for whoever ends up playing Ali in the Netflix show. Because if past is any pretext, he's definitely not gonna get paid enough for all the harassment he'll face. And if the author can't stand up for her characters and book themes now, how will she do it when the audience is much, much bigger and louder? :/

As much as I love Ali and his countless parallels with Nahri, and have a thousand headcanons for him (and a thousand fic & art ideas/wips), the series itself (or rather how it undid all its narrative themes in the end to appease loud fans who never understood what the series was trying to say in the first place, along with the author's blindspots regarding the Nahids/Daevas), has made me incredibly bitter. 🙃 I am someone who worships canon encyclopedically and remembers everything, and have come to the unfortunate realization that I cannot in good health ever read this series again.

So my beloved blorbo Ali exists for me in a weird dimension that I cannot really interact with anymore. Made worse because I still desperately want to see fandom stuff, but then also viciously tear apart everything I find. 💀

OH. GOD. OKAY. yes 100% i would recommend worm but with a lot of caveats. the main caveats: worm is an extremely fucked up book that verges closer to horror/grimdark than superhero comic. the main premise revolves around a girl who can control insects. this book is cover-to-cover insect horror. there are multiple instances of insects being shoved into human orifices. there are a handful of instances of meticulously described body horror (only one major one.) it is extremely heavy and violent; there's a lot of escalation of stakes and tragedy and not much comfort at all. there is almost always at least one annihilation-level scenario on in the background.

other post that is more articulate ab recommending worm

THAT BEING SAID. worm is without a doubt one of my very favorite novels of all time. it completely realigned my perception of superhero fiction & honestly fiction in general & i came out the other side of worm w/ my brain fundamentally changed. despite being almost 2 million words long it somehow has the ability to grab your attention & have u on the edge of your seat the Entire Time. it has. insanely meticulous and realistic worldbuilding and some of the most inventive ideas ever. if you like superheroes at all or are interested in superhero media you should 100% read worm. if you're interested in well-executed escalation of stakes or genre deconstruction or really fucking metal fight scenes & villains & extremely well written characters you should read worm.

not to sound like an old fuck but teenagers are the fucking worst

#we went to go see a movie last night and there was this group of teenagers #ive never wanted to commit a crime more in my life #basically this whole group sucked but it had a catalyst of sucky of this one kid in a White Shirt #so White Shirt kept getting up and walking around like he was a recipient of the fucking boston marathon #he kept making super loud noises seemingly just to piss people off #he kept having insanely loud conversations and arguments with his friends #like i dont think any of them watched the movie at all #in the middle of the movie he walked in with 3 random people and things got so much worse #he fuckin kept waving his flashlight into the audience like a fucking prick #he got into an argument enough that his friends separated from him and also started walking around the theater #including this couple that came and sat in front of us (in one seat. girl sat on dude's lap like there werent others around)#and THEY kept arguing. and she kept standing up for long periods of time and sitting down again #we actually went out at one point. one of my friends yelled at white shirt to stop being a prick and asked an attendee to kick him out #attendee just came in the theater and watched while White Shirt was out of the room specifically so he wouldnt get in trouble #White Shirt was also acting like he didnt do shit #he ALSO interrupted people IN THE BATHROOM saying 'who wants to be in a youtube video'#anyway the attendee just did fucking nothing and let that jackass and his friends ruin an entire movie #i cant even tell you how the movie was because of his shit #anyway yea teenagers are the fucking worst and if youre reading this White Shirt i hope you choke on your own dick #bc if youre gonna act like that later in life youre never gonna get laid

i say this every week but this has been the most emotionally intense week of my life. or at least it’s up there. lol

#i had a massive breakdown today in the middle of the work day. also i might’ve repaired my relationship w my mom almost entirely and she #gets that i have abandonment trauma AND TOLD ME THE FULL STORY OF WHY bc of things that happened to me literally when / while i was being #b*rn so. and all of that realization and pain and change has been at the surface and i have been extremely sensitive. plus there was the #election and also the renovation is starting on monday 🤪🤪🤪🤪 so. there is a lot going on rn. i ugly cried today though like lol. i was so mad #from the moment i woke up abt something so petty and then i just snapped and ugly cried in front of my mom and sister and it was ok and they #understood and reassured me???? ducking insane. but i still do have a giant gaping abandonment wound and am feeling deep despair so. 🤪✌️#delete later #ask to tsg #I’ve posted abt my mom on here so much and she knows somehow which is scary. but if you’ve seen me complain about her on here it’s bc we #didn’t understand each other and i think we do now and i am going to make a conscious serious effort to not demonize her anymore #purrs

soooo here’s the update you‘ve all been waiting for (i’m sure). i walk into the class my prof is like ‘you made it!’ and i’m like ‘yeah!’ (bro idk you but i was like sure!). almost everyone is there i was surprised cause i’m used to being early anyway i spot her in the back and i’m looking for a spot and of course almost everything’s taken so i’m like. alright. and go toward the table and i think she kinda said hi and i was like 🙂👋 and sat and immediately faced away from her for the first half hour. like a pro

#because of my chair not just cause i’m a freak. so then eventually we do start making eye contact and laughing and muttering during.#of course. thank god one of my film friends was there as a buffer but also it was like fine.#and then we all had to work together and write a one page script and oh my god. it was literally just me and her #clowning around. i said so many weird things. and she laughed. of course. and she still has such pretty eyes. i hate it here #anyway this whole bit is a lot of fun of us talking here and there and again it was group work so that’s good and then we had to present our #thing and that was fun and my prof liked ours so slay. it was mostly me i was the expert on spongebob. and character voices but they’re easy #anywho. then we were still talking after class and she bullied me for being blind again. when do the short jokes come in 🙄#and then as she’s leaving she said ‘see you later!!’ and like kinda pointed and then said a little goodbye to our other friend #have i mentioned she’s insane with eye contact. also she has a very cute smile. i’m normal about it though #UGH!!!!!!#film girl saga

One of the...saddest? Most difficult? I can't make words right now. things about writing this fic is that from an emotional/characterization standpoint, a large part of it hinges on River (as in canon) thinking that she needs to be So Extremely Careful with her love because there's no way at all that this person could possibly actually love her or value her in remotely the same way she values him and I just want to shake her and go YOU ARE AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR IN YOUR OWN STORY. HE DOES CARE. HE DOES LOVE YOU. OPEN YOUR EYES AND EMBRACE ALL THE PARTS OF YOURSELF PLEASE.

#spoiler alert: she does kind of get there. one of the things that your fans loved the most was to watch your lives and ask you questions.

you decided to do one on valentines day and one of the most common questions was if you got something for valentines day when you were younger.

“if i got something for valentines day…?” you repeated the question, thinking about your school days, “i did actually! it was a flower bouquet and a few chocolates with a cute little note on the side” you giggled remembering the cute gift you got.

“jay from enhypen was my classmate back then” you added right after.

fans went feral, making up conspiracies about you and jay being classmates and jay being the one who got you the valentine gift.

he went on live at the same day and his whole live was filled with questions about you and valentines day. he just giggled and confirmed that you and him indeed were classmates, no mentions of the valentines day gift at all.

that didn’t stop the fans from shipping the both of you and videos from yours and his lives became trending.

“jay and y/n confirmed being classmates! y/n also spoke about getting a valentines day gift and right after that she mentioned jay! if you’re asking me, jay has been crushing on her for a while ;)”

a new jake en-log was uploaded and fans rushed to view jake’s vlog. jake was so excited to film a new en-log episode so he filmed everything literally everywhere.

he made a small tour in his room. completely forgetting your signed album that was hanged on his wall.

it didn’t help at all when you also posted a vlog and behind your room wall was an enhypen album, signed by jake—even though it was far, fans could recognize his signature

you and him once met, and he brought you one of your albums to sign on it, and you brought him one of enhypen’s album for him to sign on it.

both of your fans went crazy with theories about the two of you dating and giving each other signed albums as gifts.

“did you see their albums just hanging there on their room wall? they’re fr a power couple😭 jake teach us ways to get y/n signature on one of her albums!!”

a rumor has been going around lately that you and sunghoon were chosen as the new ambassadors for a famous brand.

the rumor kept on going until a new photoshoot came out, and not-so-surprisingly, it was a new photoshoot of you and sunghoon together, presenting you as the new ambassadors for the brand.

you and sunghoon stood extremely close to each other, posing extremely close to each other as well. you had an interaction that fans has never seen before between a fem and a male idols.

a few days later the brand posted a short video of the behind the scenes, showing the both of you really close to each other with such a good interaction between you two.

fans went insane, making your photoshoot trending everywhere and talking about it all the time. especially shipping the both of you nonstop.

“have you seen y/n’s and sunghoon’s photoshoot?? I’M GOING CRAZY OVER HERE!! i’m thankful for that brand for making them the new ambassadors and we better get new photoshoot every month🙇‍♀️”

interaction between idols on award shows isn’t something new so are the reactions to other groups.

sunoo is already known as the king of kpop, who knows all the trends and new kpop songs. to other fans it wasn’t new when he was cheering for you when it was your performance, to his fans it wasn’t the case.

sunoo himself got up and danced to your performance, he cheered and chant for you, it’s something they’ve never seen before, even his members looked surprised.

you also went down the stage and interacted with other idols, when you got to sunoo, both of you danced together and had the cutest interaction ever.

the other fans started to notice the cute interaction and agreed that this is something they’ve never seen before.

sunoo and you went trending as the new kpop queen and king without even trying to do so.

“did you see their interaction and how he cheered? YOU CANT TELL ME THEY’RE NOT DATING!!😭😭 HE’S SUCH A SUPPORTIVE BOYFRIEND”

new MCs were introduced, aka you and jungwon. the fans weren’t expecting for much interaction between you two. they mostly thought it’d be so awkward between you two at start.

it wasn’t the case at all. the minute the camera started rolling, you and jungwon had the best interaction MCs has ever had.

both of you looked a bit more than comfortable around each other, making jokes and playfully pushing the other.

the idols you interviewed together looked shocked mostly from the way the you acted around each other, they could’ve swore you two are dating but hiding it.

even you were asked multiple times by your idol friends you interviewed if you and jungwon are dating. the both of you left the whole kpop community in shock.

you made fans wait impatiently every week to see new interactions of the both of you, you got the kpop community wrapped around your fingers. both of you even won as the couple of kpop in one of the award shows.

“did you see their new interaction today? I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT WEEK HONESTLY!! if they’re not dating then i don’t believe in love at all”

you wanted to get some coffee since you craved for some. you argued with your manager and told her you’d be careful enough to not get recognized and she let you off.

ni-ki at the same time lost in a rock paper scissor game and had to buy coffee to all the members.

you both happened to go to the same coffee place without even knowing.

he accidentally bumped into you and the both of you had a short interaction of a ‘sorry’ and ‘it’s okay, no worries’ type of thing.

the fans who recognized you from afar and were respectful enough to not bother you, took some pictures of your short interaction with ni-ki, which made his fans and your fans go wild.

they immediately started shipping you, thinking that you were on your way to have a date together and didn’t have much interaction because you both were in public.

“they won’t go to the same place for no reason!! they probably bought some coffee and went on a date in a more private place after that!! they look so cute!!😭😭”

welcome back to alex's unhinged meta corner, today's topic: the chest touch at the pub. that scene has me in a chokehold for some reason and i still cannot stop thinking about it.

the first thing i wanna talk about is crowley's reaction, since this is the shorter part. he did not expect aziraphale to reach out to him like this and freezes for a second while aziraphale happily chatters away.

they were both walking and the hand on his chest stops him, so he comes to a stop right next to him while he was slightly behind him before that. his gaze also snaps to aziraphale's face, who is very much not looking at him.

they were having a conversation, but the touch essentially shuts crowley up and zira leaves him to get their drinks.

now, my question is why aziraphale does it. sure, it could just be an absent gesture since they're in a crowded place, just that he has never really done so before. i think it was very much planned, like asking crowley to dance and grabbing his hand later on.

a second before he actually reaches out, he also looks back to check whether crowley is where he thinks he is. that is the only time he does that, he was busy looking for a free table and miracles them one when he cannot find one - the look back is deliberate. especially since crowley is practically glued to his side, he has no need for confirmation, he can feel him brushing against him while walking.

the hand motion he does gets me, too. he is busy fidgeting with his hands like normal and has them clasped in front of him. aziraphale lifts them once he gets to "that is precisely the point", yet also already moves it slightly towards crowley, realizes he miscalculated where exactly he/his chest is, looks to check, then looks away again before actually touching him. am i reading too much into it? maybe.

i think it is his version of a little temptation. not only does it make crowley's brain short-circuit for a second, he also gets them their drinks and is now (or so aziraphale hopes) a bit calmer and will take the news aziraphale is about to give him better. the conversation at the cafe did not go entirely as planned, after all.

additionally, something i am not sure if other people have noticed or not is that aziraphale does not just touch crowley, it is a caress. he moves his hand down his chest.

bar girl unfortunately moves in front of them, but you can clearly see the way his hand takes. to give you a direct comparison of the starting and end point:

a good point of reference is crowley's bolo tie but also the angle of aziraphale's arm while it is still visible.

the best part, in my opinion, is that aziraphale puts his hand right on top of crowley's heart. i think the symbolic importance of that is pretty clear and does not require any more explanation, although it makes me want to throw myself into a river. but that's by the by.

to summarize, aziraphale caresses crowley's heart chest to get him to calm down and not go insane over the news he is about to give him. he is also simply a bastard and knows exactly what he is doing to crowley.

as always, this is me going nuts with analysis, but i'm also curious to hear other people's thoughts on this.

• Performances include inviting you to watch his band play and miraculously getting more energy

• Casually tosses guitar picks in your direction— and when he finds out you kept one!? He’s over the moon

• He won’t go out of his way to get you food but he’ll order you something if he goes somewhere

• Adam hates nesting. He doesn’t like being stressed in general and nesting is really fucking stressful!

• The very fact seeing you pricks the urge in him to nest drives him insane

• (AKA, he likes you a lot more than he thought he did!)

• Seeing you in his space does something he doesn’t particularly hate though

• “It’s whatever if you don’t like it.” Adam shrugs

• Like they have a mind of their own, her wings stretch out and audibly fluff up when she makes eye contact with you

• She picks out trinkets to give to you at first, something small that could be waved off as insignificant

• Later, when Lute realizes her affections are returned, she brings useful offerings or something you offhandedly mentioned needing

• She wishes she could tell you about the exterminations solely to brag

• See how fierce she is, how skilled she is, how good of a protector she could be for you

• Lute will ask you to arm wrestle as a compromise. She gets to hold you hand and show off her strength!

• Nesting was fine, it was the judgment part that drove her up a wall

• Watching your eyes roam over her apartment, deciding whether or not it was good enough for you? Gah!

• “What, uh—“ Lute clears her throat, she’ll hate herself for even asking later, “What do you think?”

• You smile knowingly, something else that makes her absolutely mad, “It’s perfect.”

• Lute beams with pride like she’s won a great victory

• He tries to find other ways to steal your attention or show that he would be a worthy partner

• …But showing off his wings couldn’t hurt, right? He has six after all. If you needed to get to the other side of town he’d be more than happy to fly you over!

• Nothings too good for you! If Lucifer thinks you’ll want or like something, he’s buying it!

• Did you notice he can make things too? He’ll make you something— or fix something for you!

• Quick, break that so he can show you he can fix it!

• Lucifer pulls all the stops trying to prove himself, nesting is no exception… he’s just not great at it

• He starts! However a little after beginning he realizes just how big his mansion is and gets overwhelmed so he closes all the doors and focuses his energy on the only room that matters; his

• “I mainly stay in here,” Lucifer explains while squishing a duck in his fist, watching you explore his room, “I cleaned it up for you! N-Not for you, not for that— I mean not that I’m opposed! I just meant so that you could, uh, see?”
