let’s talk about snowbirds don’t fly for a second, shall we: the arc where roy’s addiction was first introduced, and how it actually affected the relationship between roy and ollie.

people’s perception of snowbirds don’t fly and the events surrounding it is so... weird, to the point where it often makes me wonder whether they’ve actually read the comic (and roy’s appearances right after, but i realize those might be less known) or whether they’re just going off a few very specific panels and inaccurate recounts – usually from people that will twist anything in their favour to call ollie a bad guy.

because, if you pieced together what most people seem to think happened – and this is what i was expecting to find once i decided to read it myself –, in snowbirds we should see: roy, not yet an adult and still under the active care of ollie, starts using drugs, and oliver’s so caught up in himself and negligent that he doesn’t notice what’s happening. when he finally finds out, he lashes out, hits roy and kicks him out of the house, leaving roy without a home. this makes their relationship crumble, and roy starts hating ollie because of it. they don’t speak to each other, and leave in awful terms.

and... in many aspects, that’s so far from the events you'll see if you actually go read green lantern #85 (snowbirds don’t fly) and #86 (they say it’ll kill me... but then won’t say when!). i’m assuming a lot of misconceptions happen because of a) writers with a grudge against ollie who retroactively, and unfairly, painted him in a bad light, and people took this at face value, and b) retcons that came with the new 52 reboot – but, i'll be honest, i don’t care enough to go read that mess even for this post. in general, i’m pretty sure we all agree that we ignore out of character comics; let’s not make roy and ollie the exception to that, yeah?

first i want to get something out of the way, that i feel like i need to mention even though there’s probably people that have talked about it better than i could. when we analyze this comic we should keep in mind that the characters in the story were meant to fill specific roles for the sort of... PSA comic that dc was trying to make, and in the 70s, at that. considering this, both roy and ollie are plot devices.

the creative team behind the story (o’neil and adams) have said that they chose roy to be the average “good” teen who fell into drugs – as a way to say “this could happen to anyone, even to this reputable superhero”. ollie was the caring but imperfect parent who missed the signs – not abusive but distant at the moment, he was meant to be more like a nudge to parents to pay closer attention. it was written to play as a sort of “this could happen to the best of us” situation. and in that context, ollie is made to react in a way that is at most "not ideal" for the standards of its time: he hits roy, and denies to himself that roy’s addiction is a real problem that needs to be dealt with delicately. this is used to send the message of “don’t react like this”.

that isn’t exactly the point of this post, and i don’t want to downplay the harm ollie did with his reaction or absolve him of any blame. the point of this post is: people seem to think that’s where the storyline ended, that was ollie’s final reaction, and those are the terms in which ollie and roy parted; which is just not true.

instead, ollie hitting roy happens in the very first page of green lantern #86 – we have an entire issue in which ollie is faced with his initial reaction and made to confront his mistake (which is more than we can say for, um, other father superheroes that have hit their children. i won’t name names.) the only moment you could read as him “kicking roy out” – which is the phrasing i’ve seen applied to this – happens the very next page, where ollie tells roy to “get out”.

the thing is, roy was not living with ollie at the moment. there was nowhere that ollie could kick him out from. “get out” means just that: get out of this room (and ollie didn’t intend anything more than that with his words.) the comic makes a point of stressing that roy is, by that point, independent, and old enough to be living without a guardian.

ollie, right after roy leaves, thinks: “but he shouldn’t need attention–at his age”. ollie is in the wrong here because of his close-minded view of addiction and because he’s not considering that, though a legal adult, roy is still young and needs care, but it still shows that roy was largely on his own by then. ollie’s reaction is definitively negative and a rejection, but can’t in any way be seen as “kicking roy out”, because it isn’t. (note, also, how ollie’s first thought is that he failed roy, but his denial and stubbornness get in the way and he shifts the blame. he’ll eventually have to get over this and change.)

we see that ollie plays the role of the father that reacts poorly, and he is directly contrasted with the adults who do take responsibility for roy – hal at first, and dinah after, are the ones who play the role of “this is how you should react.”

hal finds roy without knowing what happened between him and ollie, and his first reaction is to take roy to a doctor; he immediately recognizes that what roy needs is help – and will later say so to ollie. when roy refuses, saying he wants to kick the addiction on his own – to prove himself to ollie, because even though he doesn’t think ollie was right he still values his opinion and their relationship, but i’d say there’s something he’s trying to prove to himself, too –, hal recognizes that he doesn’t know anything about drug withdrawal or addiction, and he’s receptive to roy, asking him questions and listening without judgement.

so he takes roy to dinah, who is the one that (very kindly, might i add, because dinah and roy weren’t that close at the time) cares for roy while he goes cold turkey. roy, possibly rather unrealistically, though i’m no expert, kicks the addiction in the span of a few pages. before the ending of this arc, roy has already gone clean.

there’s a one week timeskip there, where we assume that out of the characters featured in this story, roy only interacts with dinah, and ollie’s been with hal. then, before the conclusion of this story, roy is given a place to confront ollie and call him out for his mistakes. roy calls him out for turning his back on him, and he gets to tell him – and show him, punching him in a scene where it’s implied that ollie completely deserves it, unlike the opposite situation that this issue started with – about the pain he’s been in. we are given, in text, a moment where roy can express to ollie what he’s been going through, what he did wrong, and how it affected him.

(this is a moment where the intentions of the comic are very clear, not only because roy practically turns to the camera to deliver the PSA, but also because of the wording: roy told ollie that he turned his back on him, and in the same page he talks about society turning its back on drug addicts, same wording twice. ollie and roy are both meant to represent something other than just themselves, even if this happened in continuity and ended up affecting their characters in the long run.)

and ollie – unlike in that first page, now ollie is shown to listen and understand. he’s not in the same place or mindset he was in when everything started. in the beginning, ollie thought that there must be something inherently bad about a person who does drugs, in a reflection of society’s – and parents’ – views of the issue. and that shows in his initial denial and reaction: ‘how could my son, who’s a good person, do this?’ then, in this scene, when roy tells him he beat the addiction, he answers “good boy” – roy immediately rejects this notion, and emphasizes that there’s more to it than his own goodness: what’s important is the help he received, namely from hal and dinah, and a caring environment. ollie, at the very least, begins to understand this, and in doing so understands very clearly what he needs to change about their relationship if he wants roy back.

this means that ollie starts undergoing character development in this one issue alone. the thing about ollie, in regards to his relationship with roy, is that he has made mistakes and the narrative acknowledges it; but, when well written, he realizes and admits it, making a point of learning from his mistakes. roy knows that ollie has fucked up, too, and doesn’t let him off the hook for it, but he also recognizes that he makes an effort to be better. especially after snowbirds, this informs their relationship a lot.

by the end of the issue they’re not hugging, and roy is leaving on his own, but that’s completely of his own accord. and these are the last panels in the entire issue:

the whole original comic, but mostly these panels specifically, is what makes me wonder about people’s perception of these events, and the misconceptions i previously mentioned – because i really am confused as to how you could reconcile these two opposite readings. unless, you know... people are speaking without ever touching the original comic. (i don’t want to blame anyone for not reading older comics, but please, if you’re gonna speak, especially if it’s to shit on a character or call them abusive the way people do with ollie, do it in an informed way.)

so, right after the events of snowbirds, because roy was allowed to speak up and ollie was made to listen, at least as much as can be expected through his stubbornness, they’re in much better terms than people usually think. if you look at roy’s chronology, he interacts with ollie in his next few appearances (barring the teen titans ones), teaming up as they normally would, with the one difference being the emphasis that’s put into the fact that roy has grown away from ollie – in the same way as any young adult would grow away from a parent. there’s also roy’s resentment for ollie’s actions, but this resentment is portrayed as deserved and it doesn’t turn their interactions into something negative. it’s still clear that they both care for each other, and there’s certainly no hate.

this first one takes place a few months after roy goes his own way. roy is in the middle of working a case when ollie gets involved, and they work on it together. green lantern #100/2 is their next appearance and has a similar plot, this time with dinah working with them as well. in both of these, they still work well together, are able to communicate in action and have each other’s backs.

in the action comics issue, ollie insists that roy is still welcome by his side, and that he should still feel free to ask for help whenever he needs it. roy refuses in the way that’s shown in the panels above – saying that he needs to “be a loner for a while” and build a life of his own (though it’s not an exact parallel, because ollie is ollie and takes “loner” to a whole other level, the wording here reminds me of the way ollie tends to leave on his own whenever he feels like he needs to find himself). you’ll see that these interactions aren’t hostile at all – quite the opposite.

world’s finest #251/3 might be the one where their interactions are the most tense, and that’s mostly just in the end. when they’re done with the usual superhero team-up, ollie shows willingness to talk to roy:

“i can’t help out. roy’s back, and, well– we’ve got a lot of talking to do.” through these issues, we realize that ollie has learned: his previous mistake was not paying enough attention to roy, and not showing him that he could always count on ollie (both in noticing roy’s addiction, but also before, in not taking enough care so roy wouldn’t get to that point). he tries to make up for it every chance he has, but it’s always on roy’s terms. everyone is aware that ollie is the one who was in the wrong, and it’s up to roy to forgive him or not, but no one ever pressures roy to do so. when roy doesn’t want to stay and talk, ollie accepts it.

ollie atones again and again, and their relationship isn’t magically fixed and they don’t go back to being close without effort – effort which rightfully has to be done, again, mostly on ollie’s part. but they never, ever go so far as to hate each other.

then, in green arrow (1988) #75, ollie feels so bad about what happened between them, about the way he screwed up, he essentially says to roy that he wouldn’t fault him for wanting to shoot him. “so go ahead. god knows, you’ve got plenty of reason.” roy has been brainwashed here; he breaks through it because of ollie’s words.

and, after this whole ordeal is done, this is how they part ways:

by this point, roy already has lian and a life of his own. he’s gone back to being speedy and then arsenal, he’s in the titans again and he will become a renowned hero in his own right. he might have forgiven ollie a long time ago, but now that he has found himself – like he set off to do at first – he seems more prepared to make amends and see where he stands with him (maybe i’m attributing more consistency among these issues, that happen years apart, than we should actually give them credit for, but i can’t help trying to find the common themes.)

after these, which are the most immediate interactions after snowbirds, we have multiple instances of them being close again. it’s in every small moment they have together, really, but off the top of my head, a couple that are illustrative for their relationship are green arrow: the archer’s quest and justice league of america (2006) #7, even though they don’t directly interact in this last one. i was gonna include panels from both, but this is getting long enough; i urge you to read them, especially if you followed along reading the issues i’ve mentioned, because they’re great. what i am gonna include, cause it’s amazing, is this panel from justice league of america wedding special.

in my opinion, these misconceptions around ollie and roy not only are a disservice to their characters but also mean that people are missing out on what i think is a really interesting relationship. it’s almost rare to see a relationship evolve in a way that feels so organic in comics, not only because the interpersonal conflict here is shown to have real, tangible consequences but also because the characters are allowed to grow in a way that is gradual and natural and even satisfying.

ollie and roy's relationship might have never been the exact same after snowbirds – but which father-son relationship stays the same after the son grows up? and i think it's a testament to the strength of their bond that without ever ignoring these events (because, as i’ve shown, they’re very much acknowledged again and again) they not only never stop loving each other, but are also able to keep building something meaningful going forward.

Days of Prophecy

Jesus compared the end of the age to the days of Noah and the days of Lot.

So much Bible prophecy is being fulfilled, these days could also be called the days of prophecy.

Here are some recent events that caught my attention.

One, in early Mar. 2021, Israel announced plans to build the “Peace Railway” to connect Israel with the Gulf nations, China, the EU and others.

This could take a few years, but it is prophetically significant because China has already spent hundreds of billions of dollars building the “silk railroad” to the Middle East, and the Bible teaches that the Kings of the East (probably China and others) will invade the Middle East during the Tribulation Period.

Two, concerning peace in the Middle East: on Mar. 16, 2021, Israeli Prime Min. Netanyahu said there are 4 more normalization agreements (peace treaties) on the way.

Netanyahu did not name the 4 nations, but it is believed that 3 of them are Indonesia, Mauritania and Saudi Arabia.

If 4 more agreements are signed, that would up the “Abraham Accords” to 8 nations.

Israel is moving closer to the covenant with death (Isa. 28:14-15; Dan. 9:27).

Three, concerning the Battle of Gog and Magog: on Mar. 19, 2021, Middle East expert Joel Rosenberg said “the threat of war between Israel, Iran and Hezbollah is rising.”

He noted that three Israeli leaders took emergency trips to Europe and Russia to relay Israel’s concern that war is coming.

Israel’s Pres. Rivlin and IDF Chief of Staff Kochavi visited Germany, Austria and France.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Ashkenazi visited Russia.

Rivlin has also secured an invitation to visit the U.S. to address a joint session of Congress (the time of this depends on when Congress can meet because of Covid).

Four, also concerning the Battle of Gog and Magog: on Mar. 21, 2021, it was reported that there is a growing alliance between Russia, Iran and Turkey and a growing dislike by these three nations for the U.S.

Russia, Iran, and Turkey are working together to divide up Syria and gain more influence in the Middle East.

Five, concerning the U.S. being a blessing or a curse to Israel: on Mar. 18, 2021, it was reported that the Biden administration will reset America’s relationship with Israel in four areas: 1) The U.S. will re-establish diplomatic ties with the Palestinians; 2) The U.S. will return to the Two-State Solution (division of Israel); 3) The U.S. will oppose putting the “Made in Israel” label on products from the West Bank; and 4) The U.S. will return to giving the Palestinians millions of U.S. tax dollars each year.

Six, concerning world government: in a video that has reportedly gone viral on social media, a doctor from Ireland, Anne McCloskey, warned that “The Great Reset” is being pushed by globalist elite individuals and groups that want to drastically reduce the population of the earth.

McCloskey believes the Coronavirus crisis is a created event that people are using to establish a totalitarian world government.

McCloskey warned that these people are coming for you and everything you have, including all of your property, savings, and freedom.

It is important to understand that the Antichrist and False Prophet will use the economy (buying and selling) to control people and silence or eliminate those who disagree with their godless world government.

Seven, concerning the cashless society: it is being reported that one goal of “The Great Reset” is to completely transform the global money system into a cashless society.

Central Banks in several nations, including the U.S., are already discussing the creation of digital currencies that can be tracked.

These digital currencies will eventually make paper money worthless.

People will not be allowed to buy and sell without them.

For your information, the Republican Gazette recently reported that the cryptocurrency market has passed one trillion dollars in value.

This is fact, not a conspiracy theory that could be several years in the future.

Something like this could be a precursor to the Mark of the Beast.

Eight, concerning the coming economic collapse:

On Mar. 17, 2021, it was reported that Biden has asked Congress to reform the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, so he can raise corporate taxes to cover some of his spending, and the Tax Foundation has estimated that it will destroy 159,000 jobs (be aware that this is at a time when many businesses are locked down and facing bankruptcy).

On Mar. 17, 2021, it was reported that Biden signed an executive order on the day he was inaugurated that canceled the sale of oil and gas leases on 80 million acres of land in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association estimates that will endanger an industry that employs about 250,000 people (experts are warning that everyone’s utility bills will skyrocket).

On Mar. 22, 2021, it was reported that Biden regularly consults with former Pres. Obama on a number of issues (recall that Obama promised to transform America, spied on Trump, his people were involved in the Russian Collusion Hoax, etc.).

On Mar. 22, 2021, it was reported that Biden plans to spend more than $100 million on bus and airline tickets, hotel rooms, detention facilities, Covid treatment, etc., for illegal immigrants.

On Mar. 23, 2021, it was reported that Biden is preparing a $3 trillion stimulus package to deal with Climate Change, rebuild America’s infrastructure, etc. (Know that many U.S. citizens didn’t receive a stimulus check from the last stimulus package.)

Nine, concerning mandatory vaccinations and tracking people, on Mar. 17, 2021, the Israeli Knesset approved a bill to require certain people to wear an electronic bracelet that will monitor whether they are obeying Israel’s quarantine laws or not.

These bracelets, called “Freedom Bracelets,” won’t track a person’s movements, but if that person leaves the area that they have been quarantined to, the authorities will be notified.

Officials are using Covid as an excuse to race toward many kinds of tracking systems to locate and keep up with the movement of people.

Ten, concerning the Coronavirus, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that 85.01 million doses of vaccine were given in the U.S. between Dec. 14, 2020, and Mar. 5, 2021.

1,524 people died in the first 48 hours, there were 31,079 adverse incidents (5,507 serious), and 85 reports of miscarriage or premature birth.

The short-term risk of death or serious affliction is small, but it is there, and there has not been enough time to determine unknown long-term risks.

In addition to the above, on Mar. 16, 2021, the Office of Attending Physicians reported that only 75% of the members in the U.S. House of Representatives have been vaccinated.

Even though 25% have not been vaccinated, all House members are allowed to use the House gym showers, locker room and swimming pool.

So, why are gyms, etc., locked down in several cities and states when House members are using the House gym, etc.?

Eleven, I want to share an e-mail from a reader that doesn’t want to be vaccinated.

Much of it is over my head, but it is well-stated and, in my opinion, very important.

Knowingly putting the name of Lucifer into your body is literally identifying yourself with him (The enzyme that activates the quantum dots in Gates’ vaccine is called Luciferase. Lucifer was Satan’s name when he fell; Isa. 14:12).

Knowingly taking aborted human fetal tissue into your body is not much different than cannibalism (When you can’t eat by mouth, you get nourishment through an IV into your body, so what’s the real difference?).

Satan is behind this whole thing, because it is unnatural for a person to want to exterminate their own species; even animals have respect for their own kind!

He (Satan) started his attack on the human genome (DNA) in Genesis 6, and nearly accomplished his agenda, BUT GOD intervened and protected the human race through Noah and his family because they were the only people on earth who had clean genetics (the pure human genome).

Jesus came as a human with a pure, uncorrupted human double helix of DNA; therefore, His sacrifice was done as a human and is for human beings only, not for animals, or synthetics, or ‘transhumans’ because none of them are ‘in the image of God.’

This current vaccine will begin the process of altering the human genome, but it does not splice into the double helix and completely change the DNA; however, the ‘mark of the beast’ (the Quantum Dot Tattoo) will totally corrupt the human genome, splicing itself into the double helix, so that the person who takes it will no longer be ‘in the image of God’ but will be ‘in the image of Lucifer’ with an alien form of DNA, one that was not created by God but is an abomination just like the Nephilim.

I never thought I would see Hosea 4:6 so clearly as I do today: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” I wonder if the believers who take it will pay a price in eternity? If they are born again, they cannot lose their salvation, but God says they will not be ‘priests,’ and He will ‘forget their children,’ so does this mean that they will lose rewards? I think so! It’s up to each of us to be responsible for our actions, as God says in Romans 1:20 that ‘they are without excuse.’

Twelve, here is another interesting e-mail from a reader in MO.

No one is date-setting, but this is amazing, if true, and I pray that it will brighten your day.

The reader’s pastor asked his congregation at their Wednesday night Bible study to open their Bible to the last two verses in the Bible (Rev. 22:20-21).

The verses are 20 and 21 (as in the year 2021), and they read, “He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”

Some would love for Jesus to come quickly for His Church in 2021.

Finally, if you want to go to heaven, you must be born again (John 3:3). God loves you, and if you have not done so, sincerely admit that you are a sinner; believe that Jesus is the virgin-born, sinless Son of God who died for the sins of the world, was buried, and raised from the dead; ask Him to forgive your sins, cleanse you, come into your heart and be your Saviour; then tell someone that you have done this.

That Page Power

She had to get some things in order with her numerous corporations, first. It was times like these that she missed Mimi the most, because that woman had been so great with organization and filling in blanks. Jasper was her assistant… well… he was the family's assistant. Honestly, he was like a super personal assistant who also mannied and helped with manual labor. Charlotte had to often remind the kids that "Uncle Jasper is not a butler!" They'd get away with anything that he let them and not having kids of his own yet, what he allowed became a lot before he got Barfield.

That was when Hank was 11 and Charlie was 6. The year that Charlotte finally was ready to announce her bid to the presidency of the Hero League. Jasper had told her, apologetically, "I'm a father now, so I can't be your campaign manager."

"I think I'll figure out a way to make it," she told him.

"I'll do it. It'll be good practice for both business and politics that I'll need to run My Little Ham," Hank offered. The business would definitely be his, but instead of 18, more and more every day, they were sure that he'd be able to take over any day now. Charlotte's family all had shares in her companies, but Hank would have the most when he became an adult. She really wanted Charlie to handle at LEAST SoulDates.

There was something poetic about her only daughter having the rights to a social network that her mother once created for her father… but Charlie wasn't interested in that. Charlotte wasn't always sure just WHAT Charlie was interested in, because even though they had a pretty communicative relationship, Charlie didn't really connect with Charlotte very well. She was very attentive to her brother, who was the smartest kid alive, in her little mind. She adored her Uncle Jasper, who spoiled her rotten and played every game that she wanted whenever she wanted. And she LIVED FOR her father. He was the most super superhero in the world, Mr. Danger. "And someday, I'M gonna be a superhero too!" She'd often brag.

"You don't have to be a superhero," Charlotte would always tell her, trying to be sure not to be the kind of mother that Simone and many other supers complained about, trying to instill some normalcy in her, even though she had powers. In fact, she wasn't even allowed to remove her bracelet until they decided that she was responsible enough to begin honing her skills and using her powers.

But, of course, sometimes she did. She took it off just to marvel about the fact that she had powers, then she'd put it back on in a hurry. She didn't know what her powers were, but she knew that her mother had a failsafe in the bracelet that alerted her if it was off for too long.

Many parents special ordered bracelets for their children's powers, however, because it was Hank's idea, Charlotte left it up to him whether they would put it on the market. His agreement was only if it was Charlie's company, since she was his inspiration for it. Charlotte loved that idea. Charlie was definitely more interested in jewelry than computers. But… a particular type. Gadget jewelry.

Growing up with a father with a bionic arm and a brother who made gizmos for fun, she didn't care about style so much as "What does it do?" A techie watch? Meh. A Whiz Watch. Yasss. The same seemed to apply for Charlotte's technology verses Hamilton's. Charlotte made things that were far more complicated than Charlie could comprehend and the parts of it that were helpful, you couldn't really see immediately. With the exception of her dad's arm and the house system, Charlie just didn't care about her mom's work. Charlotte didn't have stories that she could share with her about awesome aspects of her job, so Charlie didn't ask or care how work was for her. She always tried to be nice about not caring, but Charlotte left her to decide what she liked. Until it came down to the superpower and the hero life.

Charlie resented the fact that she wasn't able to polish her skills yet. Her dad was always excited about the possibility of her following in his footsteps, so she figured that keeping her hampered wasn't his idea. Hamilton made the bracelet for her, but try as he might to be a grown-up, she knew he didn't have any REAL authority in that house, and she wasn't sure if her daddy did either, for that matter. They had her mommy's last name. They lived on her mommy's work, mostly. Her daddy had to have gotten paid, but even being a superhero outside of the house, when he got back, he was the one of the two who cooked and cleaned and planted flowers. Charlie wasn't smart like her brother, but she was able to see a power dynamic, whether or not she was able to express what she was seeing. Like, her daddy would say something really cool and she'd get excited, then her mommy would make him think about it, or ask, "You sure about that, Hen?" And suddenly, he changed his mind to something boring instead.

Well, she wasn't gonna get the best of Charlie with that reverse psychology or whatever it was that Hank would tell her "only works on Dad," when he was determined to do things differently than what she said. Not reverse psychology. She was mixing up her examples, but WHATEVER! Charlie took off her bracelet and put it in her trinket box. The box glowed and a holographic manifestation of her mother appeared, "Hey, Charlie. Interface tells me that your bracelet is off. Mind telling me why?"

"I do mind!" Charlie snapped.

"You do?" Charlotte asked, taking a seat in her office, where she had been working until she got the alert. "Am I going to have to get your father involved, young lady?"

Charlie folded her arms and said, "You're not the president yet, so you can't boss him around all the time!"

Charlotte gave her an empathetic smile and said, "Okay. But, for right now, I still need you put that bracelet back on and we can discuss how you're feeling."

"I'm not putting it on because that's not who I am! I'm supposed to be a hero. Why don't you want me to be?"

"You're too young, Sweetie. Studies show that 94% of supers who are exploited for their powers from an early age become stunted adults with difficulty sustaining healthy relationships and 85% suffer from emotional trauma or mental dysfunction."

"How early are the ages in the study?" Charlie asked, reaching for her bracelet, a little frightened by her mother using statistics and studies. She didn't really understand a lot of that, but it sounded like messed up stuff.

"Prepubescent children's bodies have not yet developed enough to practically navigate powers. Those who can do so earlier generally have hands on daily training and extensive support. When you hit puberty, we'll TALK about it. Now… bracelet please." Charlie begrudgingly put it back on. "Please don't make me have to contact you this way again." Not only did Charlie not make her have to contact her that way again, but Charlie couldn't be bothered for most contact with Charlotte.

She still said "I love you," every night. She still encouraged her for her presidential race. But… Charlotte knew pretending when she saw it.

"She hates me," she said to Jasper and Henry while they worked in the campaign office.

They wanted to argue with her, but all that would come out was, "For now," from Jasper and a "Hate's a strong word" from Henry.

Henry elaborated, "Charlie is a sweet girl. There's not a hateful bone in her body and certainly not towards you. You're her mom. You're her hero. She sees you as a woman that she'll never grow up to be able to be and that's valid. You're intimidating. But, she knows that she has a good heart and she loves making people happy and wants to help people, in her own way. Whenever you tell her that she can't, she feels like she's not good enough. Like you don't trust her."

"Did she tell you all that? Because she's six and doesn't have the greatest vocabulary," Charlotte said, typing something.

"I paraphrased because she's six and doesn't have the greatest vocabulary, but she definitely expressed a lot of this in her own words. I told her that you're scared of forcing her to feel like because she's super, she's got a responsibility to save people and that's why you're trying to protect her from being like Uncle Ray."

"What did she say?"

"Uncle Ray is awesome. He lets me play with lasers."

"WHAT?"

"I know, right? He didn't even invite us along for laser play with our own kid?"

"That's not…"

"I know that you're scared of pushing her into the lifestyle and her resenting it later… but… I think she's resenting you for trying to keep her away from it. But, Char… if it was Hank… would you keep his power dampened?"

"Hank's more responsible than her."

"So, no."

"He's above level intelligent and above level maturity. I can't treat them exactly the same because they aren't the same."

"When you're 6, it looks like loving differently. She's got no reference to how you rationalize. All she has is that Hank has always been trusted to be who he is, but she isn't. Not by you."

"If that keeps her safe, then I don't mind being the villain in her narrative. She'll understand one day."

"That's why I said "for now" when you said she hates you," Jasper said, proud of himself.

"Somebody's gonna hate you later for naming him Barfield," she commented.

"I think he'll be honored that his father wanted a unique name for him."

"Naw," she said, not looking up.

"I actually agree with my wife on this one," Henry said.

Now, she looked up, "What do you mean, on this one?"

"Thought that was obvious. On this subject, not the last."

"Okay, so wait… you think I'm wrong to try to protect our daughter?"

"I think that you're going about protecting her wrong. Yes, kids who have powers get exploited early and it negatively affects them, but… that's not what this is or what this would be. I believe that whenever children begin to ask about things and be interested in things, that's when decisions should be made. I think that she'd be fine to begin learning her powers and if she doesn't like it, she would tell me and we'd stop."

Charlotte felt blindsided. She scoffed, "Well, did you tell her that?"

"I did. Because, I believe that she was looking for support and I genuinely had some for her."

"You're the reason that she thinks I'm the bad guy! You're not supposed to tell children when we disagree."

"She thinks that you're the bad guy in this situation because she knows that you're the one that doesn't want her to do what she wants. Not because I happen to agree with her that it's unfair."

"Wow. I would never do that to you.."

"You'd never have to, Char. If the kids tell me that they want or need something, my default is to explore that with them."

"Your default is careless parenting, just like it's careless everything!"

Barfield began crying and Jasper got up to check on him. He picked the curly haired boy up and announced, "We're gonna give you two some time. I don't really like Barfield in an arguing space…"

Henry got up and shook his head, "You're the one who actually works for her, you stay. I'd probably be too careless to help out here, anyway." He winked at Charlotte. She could tell that he was angry, despite him keeping his cool. "See you at home." He told her, then left. The system in his arm noticed that he was dangerously angry and gave him something to balance him out.

Jasper sat down with his baby and a bottle. "You okay, Champ?"

Charlotte smiled at him with his son and sighed, "They're so easy at that age. People think it's harder because of the crying and the feeding and cleaning. When they start thinking for themselves and creating their image of you without all of the information that you have, though… that's what's really hard. Charlie worshipped the ground I walk on and then suddenly… she just hated me."

"It wasn't that sudden. You're really abrasive sometimes and I think she's too young to get that."

"When am I abrasive?" Charlotte asked.

"Whenever anybody is not as smart as you and you're talking to them? Like how you're talking to me like you're mad at me, right now?"

"Like I'm mad?" She repeated, "I can't even raise my voice slightly in confusion without being pegged as angry?"

"I don't know, but you sound really angry and it's freaking me out! I'm holding a baby for crying out loud!" Jasper said. Barfield seemed just fine to Char. She rolled her eyes, then got up and left the room.

Charlotte went into a small closet that she sometimes went to whenever she needed a moment to herself and she started crying. Henry called her a little bit later. Dammit… had Interface alerted him that she was crying? She ignored the call. If it was an emergency, he'd say that. She only needed a few minutes anyway. She never cried for long when she was out and about. She checked her phone again when she cleaned her face. Henry had texted: Please answer the phone or call me back when you finish crying.

“Damn Interface. I’ve made you too smart,” she mumbled and returned the text: I’m fine. He called back anyway and she answered. “Yeah, Hen. I’m fine.”

“You were crying. Interface said so and I know it’s true because you wouldn’t answer the phone.”

“I’m fine,” she repeated. They held their phones for a moment. “Listen, I’m sorry for what I said. It was unfair and not exactly true.”

“True enough. I am definitely a lot more relaxed than you on most situations, and I can see how that can be read as careless to somebody so uptight.” She tried not to react to that dig, and it was well enough because he kept talking, “But, I feel like you know that I care and it was kind of you just trying to hurt me because I disagreed with you. Charlotte, you are a master at most things that you do. You were the smartest person IN Swellview, not just in school - the whole damn town. You graduated with honors every single time you got a degree. You were a trailblazer in the superhero products manufacturing industry, developed apps that have changed the experience of nearly every super in existence and create things for babies, children and mothers burdened with superpowers, on top of labor and nursing… You’re an amazing person. You can do almost anything, so sometimes, that makes you feel like you’re always right and whenever someone disagrees with you that they’re wrong. That’s fine. You’re entitled to that opinion, but you don’t have to hurt me because I made you uncomfortable.”

“That’s not what I was doing. I was hurt that you didn’t have my back when one of our kids was feeling negatively about me. You couldn’t even at least bring me into that conversation and let both of us talk to her?”

“I guess I could have, but I still would have felt the same way about it, and I’ve always clarified that you’re doing what you believe is best and that you are usually correct. When Mommy makes a decision, it’s the smartest possible decision to make is what I say, without fail, every time. I didn’t not have your back. I just still don’t think you were right! It’s okay to not be right about everything, Char. The old folks used to say that kids don’t come with an instruction manual, then people started making instruction manuals, but they don’t cover everything, because everybody’s kid is an individual. When Hank was Charlie’s age, he could’ve moved to New York by himself and gotten a place, and started a business on his own, if he wanted to. Charlie just accidentally sat on her own ice cream to tie her shoe, then pulled up her dress to eat it off… yesterday. She’s her dad’s kid… And unfortunately kinda her Uncle Jasper’s, somehow.” They both laughed a little thinking about how Jasper-like that entire ice cream ordeal was and how Hank literally timed her to see how long it would take her 1. To notice that she sat in it, 2. To decide what she wanted to do about it. 3. To eat a sundae off of the butt of her dress. “Baby… You are the pillar and beacon of our household and you are the heart of our family. I would be dead without you. Our kids, without you, would be being raised by me and a man who named his only son Barfield, after a child that he once stole and then got taken away from him… That was named horribly THAT time, too!” Now, she laughed harder. That meant it was working. He was softening her up. “But, baby, parenting isn’t a science. It's a miracle. It’s a miracle to be able to figure out what works with a little person who is nothing like you and to do what’s best for them when neither of you know that for certain. Nobody expects you to be perfect at everything. You are the best mother that I’ve ever known. You make sure everyone’s needs are met, you improve just about everything that our kids have had to come into contact with and you think of things that would never even cross any of our minds, not even Hank’s, to make sure your family is healthy and safe. You’re protective, so fiercely protective and I love these things about you and I’m so lucky and glad that such a heroine married me and gave me children.”

“But I make everybody miserable and at least one of my kids hates me.”

“She doesn’t hate you! But, if we keep holding her back, she might one day. And I mean… I think you could stand to lighten up on being the expert of everything in this one area. I think I’m a pretty good dad, and I feel like my input is as important as yours when it comes to the kids.”

“Of course it is! I’ve never suggested that it wasn’t.”

“Charlie thinks that you think I’m too stupid to be a daddy and that every time I say something you make me think about it until I change my mind. Those are actually her exact words.”

Charlotte sighed, “So… You think that she’s ready, to start fooling around with her powers?”

“No. I think that she’s way too young and it would be terrible for her to fool around with her powers! What I think is that we should allow her the freedom to get comfortable with having them and being more open about it. If she takes off her bracelet, let her zip around the room for a little bit. Maybe let her pick up a few heavy things.”

“When she was an infant, she crushed your hand. She’s 6 now. She’s clumsy and awkward. She could accidentally zip around and knock the fountain on herself or something!”

“She has a daddy that’s faster than her to catch her from making that kind of mistake.”

“Okay.” Charlotte took a deep breath. Henry knew it was hard for her to relinquish this kind of power, considering that her child was on the line. A lot of people thought that Charlotte was a detached person, kinda cold and not affectionate, but she was actually the opposite whenever she loved someone and she loved her children probably more than she loved a man that she spent 13 months cooped up with, waiting for him to recover. “Okay… I’m going to accept that you as her father… will do what you think is best… with that… And…” her chest was tight and she could hardly breathe, “If anything happens to her, I’ll just have to kill you.”

“That’s such a fair agreement. I’ll want that, too.”

They announced at dinner Henry’s plan to begin letting Charlie get familiar with her powers. She cheered and reached for her bracelet while Hank nearly choked on his pot roast Charlotte quickly saved him and flawlessly warned Charlie, “Not so fast, Missy. Your dad has to go over the rules.” Charlie sank back in her seat, sure that that meant he was gonna give her Charlotte’s rules, which she was sure were gonna be rules that sucked.

Henry assured her, “So, your mom and I talked about how you feel and we decided that was more important than how Mommy feels about this… because it’s your power and your body.” Charlie looked surprised and looked at her mother, to see if she was going to object to this. Henry kept talking, “But, you mean so much to both of us that we can’t just let you do whatever you want. So, we are going to try to help you accomplish what you want, but only in a safe way, okay?”

“Okay?” She repeated, still looking at Charlotte, who was trying not to cry, “Are you okay, Mommy?” Charlotte nodded. “Are you gonna cry? If you’re gonna cry, I won’t do it…”

“Charlie,” Henry said. “Don’t worry about Mommy, okay. Right now, what we’re talking about is helping you. So, these are the rules, you ONLY take off your bracelet when you’re training with me and no other time. Do you understand?” She nodded.

Charlotte gave her different examples to see if she actually did understand. She did. Henry proceeded. “Whenever we’re training, always tell me your goal before you make an attempt. That means tell Daddy what you’re about to try to do before you try to do it. Because, for one thing, I have to be sure it’s reasonable. For another, I want to know what to be paying attention to, in case it goes wrong.”

She nodded, and before Charlotte could ask her questions said, “Like, if I want to try to pick up that goddess statue in the garden, I say I wanna pick up that statue and you are there in case I can’t, and you have to help me.”

“Right,” both parents said.

The other rules were doable too. No training in the house. No showing off what she learned, even to family, unless Daddy was there to back her up. No hero complex whenever she saw someone in danger. “We’re training you to be comfortable in your skin, NOT to become a superhero. If you honestly and truly still want to do that when you get older, then that’ll be up to you. But, we aren’t going to train you to be a superhero just because you have superpowers,” Charlotte said, firmly.

Charlie nodded solemnly, then cheered, “I want to get started right away. I’m gonna go grab my Lady Danger costume and put my hair up and call Starlette and tell her to suck my big toe!”

“Don’t. Don’t do any of that,” Henry said, then whispered to Charlotte, “She can’t do that, right?”

“No, she can’t,” she said smiling through her teeth. Then, to a crestfallen Charlie said, “Daddy has to make a training schedule for the two of you, but it certainly won’t be at night, after dinner. You can put on your Lady Danger costume after you wash up and MAYBE Daddy will let you zip around outside for a little while before bed.”

“Honestly, that’s the only thing that might make her sleep tonight,” Hank said, monotone. Charlotte looked at him and he forced a smile, got up with his empty plate and took it to the kitchen. Charlotte followed him while Henry tried to calm Charlie down before she choked on the food she was trying to hurry up and finish.

“Hank? Is everything okay?” He started washing his dishes and seemed like he was really thinking about the question. “You know that you can tell me anything,” she said. The look on his face said otherwise and she wondered, well damn, is HANK feeling a way about me too? “I know that I’m not a perfect mom, but I promise you guys, I try my best.”

“You’re an excellent mom, Mom. I just… know that you stress about things. I don’t always like to stress you out. You’re like surrounded by stress inducing people, and I like being the one sensible person that doesn’t make you make that one face where for a few moments, you contemplate a mass murder, then remind yourself that you have children and they’re not old enough to get their own jobs.”

“I sadly know exactly what that face is, but if you’re stressed out, I’d rather you give that mess to me and you will be fine.” She took the dish from him and set it to dry.

He leaned against the counter, almost as tall as her now, obviously just INSISTING on taking after all of his father’s physical genes, with the exception of him starting to look a little more tanned now and have a little more darkness in his blond curls. “As long as Charlie was in that bracelet, she was a normal girl. We had a great relationship and we were both normal kids, and now… I’m going to be an outcast. I’m not a super,” he said sadly.

“Well, we don’t know that, but as soon as you’re ready, we can get you tested and…”

“I did the test myself. I’m negative. I’m a non-supe.” He looked like he might cry.

“Well… Listen… I, too, was a non-supe and that didn’t make me any less than your father or Ray.”

“Did you feel like an outcast?” He asked.

“Not because of that.”

“Because you were surrounded by stress inducing people?”

“Yup.”

“But, you had Jasper with you. He’s clearly the designated outcast.” A little bit lower and to himself, he declared, “I can’t believe that he went through the process of finding a surrogate to carry his child and named that boy Barfield.”

“Well, you know what? Jasper WAS the designated outcast of the Man Cave, but we all were pretty weird in our own ways. Whatever makes you different makes you special. Maybe because you’re the only non-super in the house, you’ll be able to do things that we might not be able to. Superpower regulations are always up and down. Whatever happens, you are the smartest kid that I’ve ever met and I get to brag to people that I made you! Hell, that can be your thing. Charlotte Page made you. You are the firstborn son of the Pagemaster. You don’t need a superpower. You’ve got that Page Power, right here.” She lovingly tapped her finger at his brain. “And you’ve got even more of it than me. Dominate a few industries. You’ll be global.”

“I just want a superpower,” he said, sighed and looked at her, “And now for the part to stress you out - that’s why I am working on a system to make myself become a super.”

“No,” she said, flat out. “If you want to work on a system to grant superpowers, okay, but I refuse to let you just experiment on yourself. You know how I got this? I was kidnapped and reprogrammed, and genetically altered. It was painful and scary and I thought I was fine, then one day it showed up, just as scary and then I had to learn to live with it. People born that way don’t feel any pain or discomfort. It’s their nature. I don’t want you to risk yourself for something that you don’t need.”

“I need to know if my Page power is powerful enough for me to accomplish it.”

“Don’t experiment on yourself!” She warned, then hugged him and kissed him. “If anything happens to you, I’m… Whew Chile, I don’t know why you and your sister want me to have a heart attack.”

He smiled softly and said, “You know that I would never disobey you or do anything to make you sad. You’re my favorite.”

“Don’t say that,” she said, with a big smile on her face.

“He’s sweet, but God help him…” He said, of Henry and shook his head.

Charlotte’s bid for the presidency was met with some opposition. She was criticised for being a “flip flopper,” accusations stemming everywhere from she became radicalized since working in her lab with Max Thunderman and merging their families (something that she hadn’t personally done, but Max worked FOR HER in her laboratories years before and hadn’t in at least 4, and she most certainly hadn’t become radicalized. “What I did become is the Mother of Symbiosis - the political action body, and the extremely successful social network. Supers and Non-pows use my site, app, and lifestyle plan to make peaceful cohabitation practices that some years ago didn’t even seem possible in the wake of The Chemist, Gaia… Who… I also recall creating the serum that stopped her.” Henry screamed out a “WOOOOOO!” Which, she had reminded him not to do before they got here, but, there he was.

On the flipside, supers insisted that she was a hypocrite because “rumor has it” that she stifled the powers of her daughter, after years of claiming to be pro-supers. “My daughter is currently working with a professional to hone her talents in a safe environment, and I waited until we felt like she was old enough to handle it before moving forward with that. I don’t know if you know this, but if you checkout my article posted in LifeTIME magazine, last year, but still relevant - I spoke about studies that I had conducted myself and how it compared to earlier studies by genetic specialists who focused on metaphysical abilities. Allowing small children free range with their superpowers is nearly as dangerous as forcing power usage on small children. Unfortunately, we didn’t know that when a lot of you were younger, and that’s why so many supers seek out professional help, which… sidenote, one of my companies is in the process of creating a network specifically for the psychological and psychiatric needs of supers. My daughter’s generation gets to live in a time where supers are given healthy choices that make them whole. I am pro-supers, but I’m here to make a way for our future, not pay homage to the toxic things that we got used to in the shadows as second class citizens.”

They even accused her of being a business woman playing politics. They compared her to a non-pow president whose candidacy she hated even speaking about, much less being compared to. She wanted to say, “I oughtta bust this whole building down with my fist.” Instead, she played her politics by saying, “It’s interesting that you bring this man up, because I remember being just a little too young not to vote for him. But, the next time around, I was old enough and I put my vote where I meant it. I’m not gonna stand up here like that man and just tell whoever whatever they want to hear. I’m not gonna make empty promises or gain trust through mutual hate or exploit anybody’s struggles. But, I feel like have to educate anybody who thinks that I’m playing politics on my history, because I was playing politics whenever I was in Student Council in junior high and high school. I was playing politics whenever I was in college and decided not only to continue my relationship with that little fun group, but to also expand into a political science major to compliment my engineering, because I honestly couldn’t decide what I was going to actually do! So, I kept on playing politics, in the lab, as I worked and went to school, had to practically revamp a college’s system in order to finish on time, which for me was ahead of schedule, and whenever I continued my education, qualified to be this engineering technologist, I got me a nice little job in this cool little outfit called the Hero League, you may know it as the place that I’m trying to be president of… OH YEAH! I WAS THE FREAKING CHIEF TACTICAL ADVISOR!”

“Drop the mic, Baby!” Henry yelled. She laughed, but he was seriously nodding, so she picked up the mic, dropped it too hard and it crashed through the podium. He “WOOOOOOO!”’d again and she wondered if she was now as crazy as him, for even listening to that, but the audience went crazy. She then remembered, these are the same people who have had Ray as president of this organization for a dozen years… On purpose!

She hadn’t even mentioned that she had two apps blast off before she finished her two of her degrees and that one of them was law, which she got just to make sure that she knew everything about her businesses. She didn’t need to… This was gonna happen…

Whenever Ray passed the mantle to her, he looked so proud. Katelyn was getting old and he wanted to take her on a road trip around the world. Jasper and Barfield were going to go, and in their minds they were gonna somehow pick up girls? In and RV with an infant and a dog, with two guys who are like 20 years apart in age? “Chicks love dogs and babies. We’re gonna be swimming in it,” Ray said.

Charlotte frowned, as they changed over passwords to her and she created new ones, even though she knew all of Ray’s all this time later. “I didn’t think that Jasper even picked up girls anymore. The last girl he was interested in was in college, so maybe you ought to get things straight?”

“Dudes also love dogs! And maybe babies! I don’t know, Charlotte! Jasper and I are having a grand adventure!” He snapped. She laughed and nodded. He placed both hands on her shoulders and looked into her eyes. This was one of their most intense moments. She had no idea what was going to happen. “I’m proud of you, Charlotte.” She blushed and nodded her head. Here she was, 36 years old and still getting satisfaction in the rare times that this man actually paid her a compliment. “You’re gonna be great at this. And when you get tired of it, you oughtta go run for President of the United States, JUST to show them that you can!” She gasped and nodded her head in agreement to this ONE brilliant plan that Ray had just had. She was 100% going to run for President of the country… not any time before her kids were old enough to handle that though. The Hero League was one thing. America was always a goddamn mess though.

I used to be on another site. I left that site to dedicate all my time to this one (abusive) friend, and I left all my other friends on there with only a mediocre explanation for 9 months of silence. I was in a bad place mentally and wasn’t thinking too clearly, but I still feel guilty to this day. I apologized to all of them and explained myself after I left that bad friend but it was never the same again and honestly I don’t blame them for not trusting me again. I wish I’d never done it.

Students: I Challenge You to Earn an Extra $1000/Year

Very excited to be sharing this guest post by Tom from This Online World on side hustles and earning extra income. A fellow student all the way in Canada who’s passionate about online marketing, passive income and even crypto! He has a great hustle mindset and his website has a lot of good info on money hacking and earning a bit more $$ – you gotta check him out.

The article is written in dollar signs $$, but simply change the currency and it works just as well. What’s important is the idea!

Starting your own side hustle is one of the coolest ways to increase your income: it’s basically growing your own little money baby.

However, when it comes to the actual work, it can be difficult to know when or how to start. From finding extra time to securing side hustle opportunities, getting the ball rolling on your extra income generation journey requires time and some thought.

For students, it can be especially difficult to find the time or correct side hustle opportunity. Assignments and exams can occupy most of your day, and the nature of student life often equates to a less than stable financial situation.

I am currently in my last year college, and I’ve certainly had my share of cheap beer, instant Ramen, and a lonely bank balance.

However, whether you are in school or employed, wealthy or just making ends meet, skilled in a craft or a complete novice, it is possible to start a successful side hustle that makes you an extra $1,000 a year.

Don’t believe me?

Well, here’s the mindset I want you to approach this side hustle challenge with:

You have 12 months in a year to make an extra $1,000.

That means you only have to make about $85/month of additional income with your side hustles.

When you think about making an extra $1,000 a year as only having to earn an extra $85 a month, it doesn’t seem so daunting.

Personally, I take 1-2 days out of every month to dedicate towards my various side hustles.

It doesn’t matter if you take on a variety of side hustles or stick to a single job. As long as you take an active approach to making more money and stick to a plan, you can succeed.

Let’s take a look at 12 possible side hustle ideas that you can do once a month to make an extra $1,000 a year.

Idea 1: Content Writing Gigs

I’m a staunch supporter of working online to earn extra money, and content writing is always my first recommendation (especially for students).

Content writing can expand your skill set and open the doors for future employment or freelance opportunities (looks great on a CV!). Additionally, content writing jobs are often remote and have incredibly flexible working hours.

I’ve written content throughout my college years, and there are a number of ways to approach securing a content writing side hustle:

Look on job posting websites for companies that are seeking freelance writers (Indeed.com, LinkedIn, Monster.ca are some great ones).

Post your own advertisement on your local job boards or online marketplaces. Offer your content writing services to local businesses in your area!

Create gigs on online websites like Fiverr. There are many freelance writers who use Fiverr to generate income, and most price their content at $5-$10 for every 500 words of content.

Most content writing jobs won’t require you to be an English major or have an extensive portfolio. As long as you are a decent writer, you should be able to find work that pays between $10-$15/hour without a problem!

Idea 2: Get Busy with TaskRabbit

Let’s face it: no one really enjoys chores. However, every job someone doesn’t feel like doing is another side hustle opportunity that can make you some quick side income!

TaskRabbit was started to provide a secure task-based marketplace. By becoming a Tasker on TaskRabbit, you can set your own hours and choose to complete various tasks people are requesting for payment.

Common tasks on TaskRabbit include:

Yardwork.

Moving and packing services.

Furniture assembly.

Home improvement.

General handyman services.

The work you complete on TaskRabbit won’t be glamorous, but it typically pays well (and you are able to set your pay range). Chances are, you could spend a few hours helping someone move or do some yard work and easily walk away with $100+.

Idea 3: Food Delivery

Whether you work for Just Eat, Skip the Dishes, Grub Hub, Uber Eats, Deliveroo or some other delivery service, making money by delivering food is a simple but effective method for making some extra cash.

If your car isn’t too old, simply register to be a part-time delivery driver for a popular delivery service in your town.

You can set your own hours, and it will only take you a few deliveries to make your monthly target of $85. Depending on your town, people might tip slightly more or less, but a single night of work should help you reach that $1,000 a year goal.

Idea 4: Help your Landlord

3 college buddies and I moved into the most grungy, decrepit old student house around town when we started school.

However, part of me is really glad we did. Besides the fact that student living can be hilariously awful, I was also able to find some odd jobs and make a few extra hundred dollars simply by asking my landlord if he needed help.

Hiring professional painters, repairmen, garbage removers, or cleaning services is expensive.Hiring desperate students is not.

Trust me when I say landlords always have projects on the go. Whether you are currently renting or not, finding occasional work for fixer-upper projects is not difficult. Reach out to landlords or look online, and spend a day painting, tearing up carpet, fixing holes in the wall, or cleaning a place.

You can earn an easy $100-$150 for a day of work, and you’ll probably walk away with a newfound appreciation for your own home.

Idea 5: Busk

If you play an instrument or can sing fairly well, busking might be the right side hustle for you!

My housemate and I spent several weekends playing guitar on the street corner of our local downtown scene. We’re ok players, so busking provides us with a great way to bond, practice our songs, and also earn a simple $20-$30/each for a few hours of enjoyable music.

You don’t have to be an incredible musician to busk. However, you will need the ability to get over stage fright. Personally, I prefer busking with my friend since I don’t really want to go alone. But I still find busking to be an enjoyable way to make extra money for something that I would do for free anyway.

Just make sure your town or city doesn’t require a permit to busk (or obtain a permit if you need to).

Idea 6: Tutor

Have you ever looked back at high school/elementary homework and realized just how easy it is (shout out to our developed, adult brains).

Well, if your town or city has a few high schools nearby, chances are you can find some part time work tutoring students in math, science, or languages. In my school, tutors were regularly paid $15-$25/hour by parents, especially in more advanced subjects like calculus or chemistry.

If you have a knack for school and enjoy helping others, tutoring might be the right side hustle for you! Plus, most tutoring sessions only last 1-3 hours, so you can make some quick and easy side income without spending too much time!

Idea 7: Babysit

If you like babies and kids, babysitting is an excellent way to make extra money every month. Half the time the kid will be sleeping, so you’re pretty much getting paid to do nothing. Sounds like a dream!

Popular websites like SitterCity have made working as a babysitter (in the U.S.) incredibly easy. However, if you aren’t a U.S. resident, you can always post your own advertisements on local job boards or just ask around town.

Many of my college friends have been babysitters throughout their life, and it’s a great way to make additional income. Even if you only work for 1 family, you can probably make $85 a month from babysitting once or twice (depending on the length of the job).

Idea 8: Drive with Uber or Lyft

This is a similarly straightforward idea to delivering food (except you’re delivering people). If you have a car that meets Uber or Lyft’s requirements, you can just drive one day of every month and make extra money.

Uber or Lyft might not be a great long term solution due to variability in available rides and the hidden cost of every kilometer you drive (repairs, oil changes, wear and tear), but it isn’t a bad side hustle to do once in a while.

Ideally schedule your driving session around a busy time where you can benefit from surcharges!

Idea 9: AirBnB

I have two friends who have been dating for a couple of years and live in an apartment together. Their place has 2 bedrooms, so once in a while they rent out one of the rooms on AirBnB for the weekend to make some extra cash.

They don’t particularly enjoy having company over, so they usually schedule their AirBnB weekends around times they won’t be home often or there’s an event in town that their visitor will most likely be attending. In any case, it’s an incredibly straightforward way to make $200+ for a weekend of hosting.

If you live in a major city, using AirBnB to make some extra money every month should be even easier. All you need is a decent space, price level, and advertisement on AirBnB.

Idea 10: Reddit ForHire

Reddit is an incredible community, and also presents budding entrepreneurs and side-hustlers with money making opportunities.

r/forhire is one of my favorite subreddits, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a job marketplace. Users can either post ‘hiring’ or ‘for hire’ posts that outline specific work and skills that are being sought after or offered.

Some of the most popular jobs on Reddit For Hire are:

Graphic design.

Programming.

Content writing.

Video editing.

Tutoring (especially in languages).

Advertising/marketing consulting.

If you have experience in any of these field or have another service to offer, definitely check out Reddit!

Idea 11: Dog Walking

It’s funny how many people buy an adorable companion only to realize they don’t ever want to actually walk it.

Dog walking, like babysitting, is a great way to make extra income just by taking care of a living thing. If you are good with dogs and enjoy the outdoors, consider walking dogs once or twice a month!

Idea 12: Slogan Slinger

While this isn’t a concrete side hustle, I couldn’t resist including something fun in this list.

Slogan Slingers is a website where companies request ideas for their next great slogan and have users deliver them the answer to earn money. For example, a plumbing company might post a contest for $250 that explains what kind of slogan they’re looking for, and users can submit up to 3 entries to try to win.

If you win, you get the money. If you lose, nothing happens! The website isn’t incredibly popular, but there is usually a new contest available every other day. 1,000-2,000 people usually enter a contest, but if you have a knack for marketing, it could be a fun website to visit.

I’ve only been slogan slinging for 1 month and haven’t won anything yet, but I plan to keep at it!

Okay, What’s an Extra $1,000?

You might be wondering what’s the point of working side jobs to earn an extra $1,000 a year, but you’d be surprised at how much you can accomplish with an extra $1,000 in your bank account.

Thinking of investing, but never had enough saved up to take the first steps? Use your thousand dollars.

2.05 Kill or Be Killed

I think the lead-in sentence for every episode this season is just going to be me, enthusing about what a good episode it is, full of great themes, complex relationships, and tightly woven plots. Season two, man. It’s basically perfect.

Elena catches Jeremy up on the fact that Mason and maybe Tyler are wolves. She’s promised not to keep things from him, but says she doesn’t want him involved. Stefan sneaks into Elena’s bedroom, she makes sure the door’s shut, because actually she’s definitely still keeping things from Jeremy!, and kisses Stefan. “Hi,” she says. “Hey,” he says, hugging her. “You ready for today?” “No,” Elena pouts into his shoulder, “I hate fighting with you, even if it’s fake.” Stefan reminds her that they need to keep Katherine thinking she’s getting what she wants, it’s the best way to make sure she doesn’t hurt anybody. “Just promise me she won’t get her way with us,” Elena says, “we can fake a fight, we can pretend that her threats are tearing us apart, but none of it’s real, okay?”

Stefan smiles at her, says, “Okay how ‘bout this? Today, when we’re fighting, if I say I can’t do this anymore, Elena, what I’ll really mean is that I love you.” He adds a little extra broody-smolder, she smiles.

“And when I say, Fine, Stefan, whatever – it really means I love you too,” she answers. “Deal,” Stefan says, and they both stop beaming at each other long enough to kiss.

This is a pretty good episode for them, so expect me to run with my rare Stelena feels for as far as they’ll take me.

Caroline signed her mom up for the Historical Society Volunteer Picnic some time ago, and Liz tells her she’s going to go and spend a whole day with her daughter. “Come on, give me one day,” she says. “I’ve been buried in work mode, I’ve barely seen you.” “Well, be warned,” says Caroline snippily, “I’m in a mood.” “Goodie for me,” Liz says wryly, then asks, “Is everything okay with you?” “I’m fine,” Caroline says. “It’s just, lately you’ve seemed…different,” Liz tells her. “I’m not different, I’m fine,” Caroline insists. “I know you don’t think I notice these things,” Liz persists, “but I do. What’s going on with you?” “You know,” says Caroline, “there’s pretending to be mother and then there’s reality. Let’s not push our luck.” Nothing puts strain on a relationship like one party not telling the other that they technically died.

At the picnic, Stefan proposes peace to Mason, who’s understandably miffed given that his own overtures of friendship were so violently rejected, and tells Stefan that Damon should watch his back. Stefan switches gears, reminds Mason that he’s outnumbered and only dangerous once a month. He assures Mason that Damon won’t attack him, and the two shakes hands. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, these moments of Stefan threatening people are so wonderfully funny when you remember Stefan is supposed to be a seventeen-year-old little high-school shithead. Mason leaves; Damon sneaks up on his brother. “What are you doing?” he asks flatly. “Negotiating peace on your behalf,” Stefan says. “But I don’t want peace!” Damon whines. “Well,” Stefan says unsympathetically, “consider it opposite day.” “Stefan,” says Damon, putting his hands on his brother’s shoulders as if he’s about to give him the close-talking-est neck massage ever, “tell me you don’t seriously think a handshake just solved all our problems.” “No, actually,” Stefan says, mock-casually,“I think the first chance he gets Mason Lockwood is going to drive a stake through your heart. And then through mine! All because you took it upon yourself to try to kill him. So thank you, because we don’t have enough problems.” He cups Damon’s face in one hand in a quasi-manly gesture of affection and frustration, shakes him, and then leaves.

Jeremy is sitting in the Grille, sketching Tyler Lockwood. Eventually this gets boring, so he gets up and asks Tyler how he’s been, and Tyler (after a kneejerk-jerk response) thanks him for being a decent person at Mayor Lockwood’s wake. Tyler then invites a couple of girls and Jeremy back to his house to drink and party while his mom’s supervising the picnic. Since this little arc is 85% moonstone shenanigans, this is pretty much all I’m going to say about it: Tyler knows Jeremy knows, Tyler doesn’t kill anybody, Tyler gives Mason moonstone. Bing bang boom. Also, Mason’s sort of with Katherine.

At the picnic, Mason asks Liz to talk about the council. “I know vampires exist,” he says, “and you have two of them living right under your nose.” “Really,” says Liz, impatiently, “who would they be?” “Damon and Stefan Salvatore,” Mason says. Easy as that – every other mini-villain threatened to expose the boys, but Mason just went straight for it. Liz’s eyes narrow. “That’s impossible,” she says. “I know Damon Salvatore, do you know what he’s done for this town? I have watched him kill vampires, he’s an ally, he’s part of the council.” “Think about it!” Mason insists. “When did the vampire attacks begin – when Damon and Stefan Salvatore moved to town?” “No,” Liz says firmly, “Damon Salvatore is my friend.” But of course – Mason offers to prove it. It is nice to hear “Damon and Stefan Salvatore” instead of “Stefan and Damon Salvatore” for a change – Damon is older, after all.

“So, suddenly she’s in the running for mother of the year, just when I’m trying to avoid her the most!” Caroline complains to a very distracted Elena, who has to be prompted to supply the requisite “then what happened”. “Well, I was a bitch,” Caroline admits, “but that’s par for the course with us. So,” she adds, in that terrible fake-casual Mystic Falls Liar voice, “how are things with you and Stefan? Anything?” Elena heaves a theatrical sigh, says, “No, not since the fight. He’s been pushing me away because he thinks Katherine might get jealous enough to hurt me. I just don’t know how to change his mind.” “You said that Katherine’s dangerous,” Caroline says, coming over to sit by her, “maybe he’s got a point.” “Yeah, I know that she’s dangerous, and I know that he’s just trying to protect me, but it feels like giving up, and I just –” She cuts off, fake-frustrated. “Just what?” Caroline asks quietly. Elena makes eye contact with her, says innocently, “I just thought that we were stronger than that.”

I’ve complained before about Stefan treating Caroline like a pawn – feeding her vervain to knock Damon out instead of actually making a move to save her – and again when Stefan and Elena both reacted to Caroline’s being turned into a vampire with “Katherine’s doing this to me”, instead of “it’s awful that Katherine did this to Caroline”. But this is a new low. They’re using Caroline to feed false information to Katherine, while simultaneously guilting her for something they must know she’s being forced to do. I don’t love it.

Damon wanders up to Liz and asks what her chat with Mason was about. “Oh,” she answers awkwardly, “I just asked him to help me with clean-up in the woods.” “That’s what I’m here for,” Damon says, cheerfully, “put me to work! Should I go help him?” “Oh, no, no, you know what, he’s – I’m sure he’s fine,” Liz says, avoiding eye contact, which is a darn shame, because Damon is having an Extra Pretty Eye Day.

“Are you okay, Liz?” he asks. “You seem really upset.” “It’s Caroline,” Liz answers, “we had a moment.” “Is there anything I can do?” Damon asks, sounding genuinely regretful for her pain.

“No, Damon,” she says, “thank you. It’s just horrible parenting skills paying off in spades.” She makes her exit, he watches her go, looking blue-eyed and worried.

Stefan and Elena ogle each other from across the picnic. “Uh-oh,” Caroline says, “longing looks are being exchanged.” “I’m gonna go talk to him,” Elena decides. “No, Elena, I think it’s a bad idea,” Caroline says, but Elena’s already gone. Damon sidles up so that he and Caroline can look pretty and blue-eyed and watch Elena together; Damon asks, “What’s her problem?” “Don’t worry about it,” Caroline says. “Why are you being such a bitch to your mom?” Damon says, with a frankly surprising amount of sincerity behind it.

“Don’t worry about it,” Caroline repeats. The answer should be obvious – she can’t let her mother get too close, or Liz will find out she’s a vampire, and Damon should know that. Everybody’s getting on her case for things that aren’t her fault; she’s in several impossible positions and she’s doing the best she can, but nobody’s helping her. Across the way, Elena asks Stefan, “Do you still care about Katherine?” “Don’t do this, please don’t turn this into something it’s not,” he pleads, which kudos to Stefan, is totally believable! Their fights have always consisted of Elena asking straightforward questions and Stefan doing backflips around them. “So this isn’t up for discussion, that’s what you’re saying?” Elena says. “No, I’m saying this isn’t up for discussion right now, because we have ears on us,” Stefan says. Caroline gets busy painting something, Damon gets busy…staring at the ground? Great job, real subtle, hon. Elena huffs a sigh, asks, “Okay, when?” “I don’t know,” Stefan says. “I saw her, Stefan,” Elena says, her voice starting to shake. “It’s like we’re the same person, how could you hate her and be in love with me?” “You’re reaching,” Stefan says, “I’m not…I’m not Damon.” “How about we don’t bring Damon into this right now,” Elena answers. “You know what,” says Stefan, dropping his voice lower and looking her in the eyes, “I can’t – I can’t do this anymore, Elena.”

Comprehension dawns in her eyes, she swallows. “Fine, Stefan,” she says, nodding slightly, “whatever.” She walks off; Damon murmurs to Caroline, “Relationships are about communication…” This could have been such a corny scene, but you get the sense that as Stefan and Elena are talking, the reality of their situation starts to bleed into the fight. It feels like when they use their code phrases, it’s not to say “none of this is real, like we planned, like we wanted – everything’s okay, and I love you.” But rather, what they’re communicating is that even in the midst of this, even though they’re both really afraid and even a little frustrated with each other, they do still love each other: “Nothing’s okay, and I love you.” Relationships are about communication, and they managed to say exactly what they needed to.

“Heard you talked to Stefan,” Damon tells Mason. “Nice guy,” Mason says. “Way nicer than me,” Damon says, grinning. “Nice is overrated,” Mason answers. “That’s what I think,” Damon says, clapping him on the shoulder. This is very reminiscent of his early interactions with Alaric – as in, the interactions directly before he killed Alaric. Damon, you are bad at making friends. Mason leaves, Stefan zooms over to yell at his brother for shit-stirring. “So what’s up with this faux-drama in your relationship?” Damon asks, point-blank. “What are you talking about?” Stefan says, shifty-eyed as can be. “Oh, come on, Stefan,” Damon says, “you and Elena don’t fight.” He adds, wryly, “Especially not over me.” “Drop it, Damon,” Stefan says. “With pleasure,” Damon answers, and accepts a lemonade from a pint-sized volunteer, which he promptly spits all over, coughing. “What’s wrong with you?” Stefan says, somewhat petulantly. “Vervain,” Damon gasps. Across the park, Liz watches as Stefan sniffs the drink and fusses over his brother. They’ve been caught.

Elena sits at the edge of the creek and rips at grass, angrily. Caroline tries to tell her maybe it’s for the best – and given Caroline’s own decision to break up with Matt, maybe she believes it is – but Elena snaps at her. “I don’t mean to take it out on you, you’re just trying to be a good friend,” she bites out. Elena, quit being an asshole. “No, I’m not,” Caroline says, “I’m not being a good friend at all.” But before she can confess anything, she sees her mother leaving the picnic and takes off after her. They have a very cliched back and forth – “you lasted longer than I thought”, “it’s important”, “it always is” – and then Liz, apologizing, leaves. “Something’s up,” Caroline tells Elena. They climb to the top of a hill and Caroline shushes Elena so she can listen to what’s going on.

Damon and Stefan rassle at the edge of the picnic. “I’m not listening to any more of your give-peace-a-chance crap, he’s dead!” Damon spits. “Alright, I don’t like it, but he’s making threats, he could expose us, we need to put him down,” Stefan says. The fact that we both pulled ourselves out of absolute rock bottom and STAYED together is nothing short of a miracle. We have worked our way up from rock bottom and we’re doing well and on our way to doing great. My dad has said that he thinks my fiancé is a great guy, he’s a hard worker and always held a job and since we recovered has always taken care of us and made sure we were okay, and worked his ass off during the time period I took like 8 months off work due to crippling depression and just a horrible mental breakdown. My EI sickness benefits lasted for about 3 and a half months and then after that it was just him supporting the both of us, paying all the bills, working OT so I could continue treatment and therapy- dedicating all of his time to me and helping me get back on track and my dad saw this. He worked hard and eventually got back into the automotive industry and now he’s got a decent job as the a Service Advisor to a Pretty big Mechanical Company- works at an Industrial Truck Repair Shop and he’s basically the 2nd in command, the shop manager is the only one above him, he has keys to the place, closes it up, has a work phone they pay for, good benefits, decent pay, works a lot and in 3-4 years when the Shop Manager retires, he will 100% be taking over. Before he started working there, they were consistently losing money each month for a while because the manager was constantly undercutting the bys hours (the mechanics- like let’s say a job is supposed to take 3 hours but took 8 bc something unexpected came up and severely needed repairs- it ALWAYS happens- he’d constantly only bill the truck drivers out for 3 instead of 8) and he was also giving drivers $ off cause they asked and he wouldn’t fire anyone, so there were a couple bad mechanics that just didn’t do their job properly and took forever on a simple oil change or brake job but he doesn’t like confrontation so he just let them. ANYWAYS, my fiancé took over the billing and the first month he did- that place made money for the first time in months. He also spoke to a couple of the mechanics and gained their respect and they all like him and they do their job properly and without laziness now. My point is, he is doing great at his job and when the shop manager retires, he’ll 100% take over, so a decent pay raise and he gets a company truck (like a gooooood truck) and a company gas card so won’t have to pay for gas and then obv won’t pay for insurance either.

But yeah my dad really thinks my fiancé is great. ANYWAYS THE WHOLE REASON I STARTED THIS POST IS BC my bf texted me and was like “your dad texted me and asked me to stop by your step moms previous house and check in on the work the contractors are doing on the fence on my way home from work and he signed it from “your future father in law” 🥹
