poppy war thoughts, aka this book was so bad it made me want to get a goodreads account just so i can shit on it in an official capacity
so what initially sold me on this book, is that despite my friend ellis absolutely hating rf kuang's babel, ive only ever seen raving reviews for it anywhere else, and a brief description of its magic system reminded me of gergő és az álomfogók. i love that mainstream fantasy is finally starting to rely on drawing from cultures other than the sort of western mainstream and i was actually super excited to get into it. well it sucked (this contains spoilers obviously)
its 11 am this is not gonna be very structured but let me start off by listing some things i did enjoy. first of all its low hanging fruit and im better than this so im only gonna shit on tpw for being so directly about the sino chinese war that the only actual interesting bits of exposition in the book was what was just a description of actual events a Little bit. listen lotr is about ww2. its fine its all fine. anyway, i had fun with the bits of worldbuilding that were yk, actually worldbuilding. the magic system was really interesting and just super not explored enough, the book handled drug addiction about as sensitively as the dare program, but nevertheless it was a cool concept. shamans who have to get high as hell do do anything and then putting those guys in a combat setting is crazy. really fun concept. speaking of shamans i loved jiang. his archetype is impossible to fuck up and he was loveable and fun till the very end. uhh what else. the fight descriptions were good its something kuangs is decent at, as someone whos watched just truly an inordinate amount of wuxia as a child i rly can appreciate a stupid convoluted fight scene. oh i found it hysterical that the west was just one country that was really fun.
NOW ONTO THE SHIT I HATED
rin is incredibly unlikeable i know its not the point of every book ok but tpw isnt good enough to have a protagonist who is just impossible to relate to this isnt 1984 okay this is contemporary ya. i GET that she sucks and thats the point but im supposed to emphatize with her and throughout the book she just seemed stupid and easy to manipulate and not very interesting. shes an incredibly shallow character which is i guess what happens when you base your ya teenage girl protagonist on CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY MAO ZEDONG. HELLO. anyway. all her personal relationships are very much carried by the strenght of the characters close to her, and because most characters in this book are not very interesting that makes for a shitty fucking protagonist.
most of the conflict in this book is extremely artificially generated until maybe the second half of part 3. everyone in rins life is unnessecarily mean to her because shes just so smart and good at things. the part where they accused her of cheating on the exams and she owned them like crazy came to define much of the book. some kind of mean cunt whose purpose in life is to cause misery is an asshole to rin bc shes so smart and strong and talented, and she owns them with a witty remark. she punches nezha on the first day of school for fucks sake.
speaking of the school, the majority of the book is spent at sinegard academy and it is an extremely predictable and dull affair. i long for the wizard of earthsea. kuang is not a very good writer on a technical level and everything that she tries to imply she ends up spelling out (usually by having a character say it out loud) only a couple pages later. you can get through 2/3rds of this book by just reading every other page and correctly guessing what has happened and what will happen. in possibly the funniest paragraph of part 2, rin thinks about how everybody thinks altan is the coolest guy and yet he has no friends and at this point shes been experiencing quite severe racism from all of her peers and then instead of leaving you to figure out the quite obvious conclusion kuang literally has her say "oh his skin is dark and mine is too. i wonder if he knows what racism is like" just, truly hysterical.
her feud with nezha is unbearable, i knew immediately that he would become a romantic interest because a ya protagonist cannot hate a boy for perfectly good reasons. it always has to be bc shes horny. anyways thankfully when she starts studying with jiang, jiang is there and the terrible dullness of it all is lifted somewhat
as i mentioned before, the actual historical elements in the book elevate it greatly and the third part is almost enjoyable in some sections. however, unfortunately, this is also the part of the book where rin and altans darkling situation begins. i have a sinking feeling altan may not have died, which sucks because i hated this bit. they have virtually no relationship to eachother except altan yelling at rin occasionally. now again there were bits and pieces of their relationship that i didnt quite hate, but honestly i still dont entirely buy the rin is a seerly thing emotionally because she is so detached from it. the revelation only seemed to shock her a little bit and then she was busy with being at war and her boss hating her, when she actually gains the power of the phoenix at the very end its her own hatred and egoism fueling her rather than any connection to her people. overall this again comes back to her being quite weak as a character, and the worldbuilding suffers as a result of that
in any case, ill mull over continuing the series. the ending was actually quite strong i love a genocide as a result of being a stupid fucking 19 year old (dont quote me on this please), so maybe the next one is better maybe ms kuang learned to write inbetween these 2.

I was actually considering making a sequel before this ask came in though, so good timing! Also, don't worry, I too am a huge simp for domesticity. 2/2 Keegan requests finished after my veterans day hold-up AHHH (note to self: write domestic fics while listening to laufey)
The light, refreshing breeze of warm spring air comes through your kitchen windows, followed by the chirping of finches at your bird feeder. The sweet smell of wild poppies and daisies fills your nostrils while you make a pitcher full of pink lemonade, slowly stirring in sugar and honey. The small, quaint town you relocated to is everything you could've wished for; the happy little monthly farmers market that's held once a month, the grey cobblestone roads, the old-fashioned lamp posts lining the sidewalks in the square– it was perfect. You thought this life could only exist in your dreams during... that period of your life. The memories of war will never fully dissolve and leave you at peace– but you have a loving family now, something to keep going for.
You dropped a few ice cubes in and placed the finished pitcher on the dining room table on top of the delicate, square flower print cloth. They were white roses, your favorite for a variety of reasons. They’re the flowers that grow in your town's planters and the same flowers your husband bought to propose to you. Ironically enough, they're your daughter's second favorite flower. The drawings of fairies in rose-inspired dresses and leafy hats are hard to fully keep up with, but you try your very best to hang as many as possible on the fridge. The flower was symbolic in more ways than your own sentimental value– It meant new beginnings and eternal loyalty, two things you were grateful to have. One of the roses from your ceremony was pressed and framed next to your wedding photo, hanging in your foyer gallery with the other happiest moments of your life. The day the family home was completed, your proposal, your daughter's first day of pre-school– they’re the quiet moments you smile about when they pop up in your head.
You returned to the sink to wash the kitchenware you used and looked out the window to see Keegan opening the gates, petting the brown border collie, Goose (lovingly named by your daughter) on the way in. You smiled at the sight of your husband. He's finally happy– you're both happy. You snap out of your staring and rush to open the front door, your sundress flowing behind you. Keegan must've heard the opening of the door and the light jog on the dirt path, getting up from the ground, leaving Goose to his shenanigans. He put his arms around your lower back and you threw your arms around his shoulders, giving each other a quick kiss on the cheeks before a sweet kiss on the lips. You softly laughed noticing the transfer of your lipgloss, quickly wiping it off his face.
"Work ended early?"
"No, I just figured I'd come home for lunch today," Keegan said offering his arm to you as you walk back to the front door. Keegan got a job as a mechanic after a bit of consideration. He’s always been handy with things, so the job was practically calling his name.
"You decided to close up shop for today?"
He was referring to your second-best achievement, (first comes your daughter) your boutique. Your mother taught you how to do needlepoint embroidery as a child once she caught you watching her work from the living room doorway. It was one of the more traditional things you learned, despite living in the city. Your love for the hobby evolved into sewing. You haven't picked up sewing since the war besides mending the fabric of your uniform whenever it tore or if a patch was falling off. Besides that, it was a joy to open a small boutique for the residents in the town, often taking special requests for their children.
"It's the first day of spring break for the little one. We were going to have a girly chit-chat over lemonade until you came in, dearie." He opened the front door and let you in before following behind you to lock it.
"Really now? I wouldn't want to interrupt anything." You joked with each other.
"But no, we were actually going to the lake for a picnic with a chance of some girly talk. If you have enough time, do you want to tag along?" You offered.
"Yeah of course. Do you need help making anything–? I can always help you with that sort of stuff–" you laughed and cut him off with a kiss. You both embraced each other and swayed in the comfort of each other's presence.
"I'm aware, but don't worry, I've already got the food prepared. There's enough extra for you too, Keegan."
"Thank you kindly, angel." He never let go of that nickname after all these years. Somehow you look even more perfect in his eyes with every passing day. You've gone through so much together yet your smile, your tears, your laugh... everything about you kept him going. His eyes aren’t as cold anymore because of you. You’re his angel sent from heaven itself. Now he's a husband, a father…a family member to the two people he loves most. Although Keegan never voiced it out loud, he's always thought motherhood looked beautiful on you. Seeing your skin glow while playing with your daughter or seeing your proud face after finishing sewing a pair of overalls for her with a flower embroidered on the front pocket, a purple lilac.
You find it fun to embroider lilacs instead of an 'L.R' monogram on her clothing as a nod to her name. Lilac, Lilac Russ. Keegan was the one to suggest the name, inspired by the bush in front of your fence. He placed lilacs at your hospital bed-side before you brought your little Lilac into the world.
You enjoyed the comfortable silence in each other's arms until you both heard the door to your daughter’s room opening, then seeing her tiredly walk into the kitchen clad in her button-up PJs filling up with joy after seeing her father back early.
"Papa you're back! Me n mama are gonna go on a picnic today! She said she was gonna make lemonade and sandwiches and cake!" She beamed. Keegan smiled at his daughter's excitement. He loves his cute little family so much.
"Your dad is gonna come with us, Lilac."
“That’s right.” He confirmed, ruffling her hair. She let out a squeal before grabbing one of each of her parent's hands and jumping out of pure bliss.
"Yayyy! If I change can we leave, like— right after I'm done?" You nodded and she happily stomped in place, hugging your and Keegan's legs before running into her room to get dressed.
"I'll never understand how that girl has so much energy after just waking up..." You sighed. "You better change out of your work clothes too. Hopefully, we can finish before her." You pulled your husband into your shared bedroom, closing the door behind you. You sat at the vanity fixing your hair, spritzing some perfume, and putting on your jewelry as Keegan picked up different clothes to wear for your family outing. He finished before you, looking over to see the love of his life. You looked so peaceful. not caring about the problems for the future, but living in the present. He walked over to you and bent over your shoulder to sweetly kiss up the side of your neck, leading up to your cheek, wrapping his arms around your chest.
"You look so beautiful like this– you’re so naturally beautiful. I love you, I love our family."
"I love you too. Thank you for our family, thank you... for everything." The memory of his promise came back to you:
"After this is all over, I'll make sure that quiet countryside life you dream of comes true– I promise."
You take a second look at your lives– it's perfect. A lovely little house painted white in a field, a dog, and the most lovable child as a product of your burning love for one another.
"I'm ready!" Your daughter called. You can hear the tip tap of her running on the wood floors, the kitchen tiles, and finally the wood of the foyer. You get up from your chair and lean into Keegan's warmth as he grabs your hands, placing a kiss on your knuckles.
"You ready?" He asks you. You hum a response and he kisses the top of your head, walking you out of the bedroom. You see your daughter in her frilly dress and purple raincoat with her matching rain boots. Keegan goes out to get your dog indoors after seeing him getting sleepy while you put the food, plates, glasses, and silverware in two baskets. The lacey picnic blanket was already placed in a bag near the front door. Keegan came back in after two minutes, Goose trotting in, heading to his bed to take an afternoon nap. You looked at the various amount of items trying to figure out how to carry all of your things. You look over to see your husband fixing your daughters' ribbon and feel a type of fuzzy motherly feeling, then it hit you—
"Lilac, do you think you can hold the pitcher without spilling it?"
"I can!" You smiled and pat her head in praise, picking up one picnic basket and the tote with the blanket, and handing the other basket to your husband. You put the basket down to hand the pitcher to your daughter. She has one hand on the handle and the other at the bottom of the pitcher, trying to support its weight.
"You got it, kid?" Keegan asks your child while opening the door.
"I'm fine, I got it" She responds waddling out with the pink lemonade. You slip your shoes on and Keegan locks the door behind you, kissing you before you walk passed him. You and your family walked out of the fence gates but your daughter makes an abrupt stop in front of the flowers.
"Mama, mama! My flowers are blooming! So are yours!" You look over your shoulder and smile at your daughters' reaction to the plants. The white rose bush is planted right next to the lilac bush, finally blooming after a long winter.
"They are, aren't they?” Droplets were still present from the time you watered them in the morning.
“Come on now, I don't want the ice to melt too much, m'kay?" You, your husband, and your daughter walk to the lake in one group. Your cozy little home was only a ten-minute walk from the lake– it's like the Russ Residences' hidden gem. One day in winter, you'll check if it's able to freeze over. Maybe you’ll teach Lilac how to skate for the first time. You acknowledge that thought, and let it pass, saving it for the future. You're here to enjoy your family outing, not to create plans. As you walk the desire path where grass refuses to grow made after many family walks to the lake, you did make one plan for when you three return:
As soon as you come back, you'll look at the lilacs and white roses to thank them, for everything.

Babel by RF Kuang is on my list! The Poppy War was great so I will read anything she writes
for more romance: ANYTHING BY EMILY HENRY I loved Beach Read.....GUS <33333 it is sort of sad though and deals with death, it did make me teary
The Hating Game is also a romcom and it's funny enemies to lovers (i have avoided the movie though tbh lol)
if you're younger or looking for YA: Six of Crows is awesome, The Wrath & The Dawn used to be my fav YA book when I was younger and it's heavily inspired by 1001 Nights

the main problem with booktok is that the known creators aren't people that actually enjoy reading but usually people that only like smut. it's the haunting adelines and ana huang and penelope douglas trashy books that always get hyped up like they're masterpieces when they're just smut books with no plot and often times not even just dark but truly abusive (and not tagged as such which is what gets me) and like sometimes im in the mood for those type of books but the main problem is that some people talk about them like they're well written and thought out which i'm sorry to say but of the "spicy books" i've read none is actually good besides some interesting smut (not even because ao3 has way better stuff tbh) so if you go into booktok actually liking to read different things and wanting to reach for something a little better you're going to have to fight through the million of shitty book recs to get to it. honestly i still think that's how acotar and like the cruel prince got so popular because they're not amazing compared to the hunger games or poppy war but they're better than the brainless smut books and so many people only read those unfortunately
again im not the best person to say this because i will literally read ao3 smut after jane austen, there's a mood for everything but some people should really broaden their tastes especially if they want to act as critics on tiktok. there's also the problem with diversity but that's a whole other issue
i'm not going to lie i do like penelope douglas but i think ana huang and haunting adeline are horrible lol, idk what it is tho. but yes, poorly written fr (which is why im convinced i can also write a book lol). but also like...they're not that spicy? like i know im mad desensitized from all the fic ive read online its wild sometimes to see people frothing over this stuff because i'm like...whaat? and with the whole ali hazlewood Bride book...here i am thinking a/b/o is a known thing haha but that's totally on me. the book was shit btw, Rabid was such a better a/b/o book imo
i totally get people wanting to hype books up and stuff and i really do try to just read for pleasure but sometimes it's like what am i looking at was that even a coherent sentence? i can judge all day long but i should not haha

In the Dream House, by Carmen Maria Machado
I was surprised when I flipped back in my notebooks and realised I really did only read it this year. A brief summary: Machado wrote this as a sort of autofiction about an ex-girlfriend. It was not a good relationship, to put it simply. It was a very bad one. The dream house that Machado imagined for herself became a prison. I think it captures the heart of abusive relationships, which is that it fucks with you so much that its nearly impossible piece it together in a clear narrative. Every incident of rage, cruelty, deceit -- it boils down to a “they said, I said” event, which Machado captures deftly by making every chapter a different genre. I wish I have the brilliance to do justice to how smart and how “crafty” this book is, but let me put it this way: I once lent this to a friend on vacation, and she blew off a day of waterfall watching and hiking in Yosemite to finish reading.
Sea of Poppies trilogy, by Amitav Ghosh
Trilogy of historical novels set around the First Opium War. Ghosh is an Indian writer with an interest in the lives of how the opium trade affected the lives of Indian and Chinese people at the time. It’s just -- really nice to read a historical novel that’s not from a white POV, but that’s also not afraid to paint the Indian and Chinese characters a comedic brush. There are crossdressing mystics and conniving merchants and campy oil painters, and so even though the subject matter is depressing as hell, but I would still describe it as a hilarious picaresque.
The Lying Life of Adults, by Elena Ferrante
It’s one of those books that I didn’t really enjoy reading, yet I couldn’t put it down and thought about for a long time afterwards. Ferrante has a knack for creating this very specific type of female character who sits in their world like a massive planetary body, pulling everything else in the narrative into their gravitational field. I like that a lot. It’s one thing to write a strong/interesting/3d blah blah blah female character, but another to write a female character who moves the entire book’s people and events through her sheer force of presence.

Landing, by Emma Donoghue
Very cute queer love story about a Dublin air hostess and a butch small-town Ontario museum curator. What can I say, I think Slammerkin or The Wonder are objectively better writing, but this one is just cuter and hits me with that fresh early 00′s nostalgia.
Orwell’s Roses, by Rebecca Solnit
“Plants made the world, over and over...Think of the Carboniferous as a sixty-million-year inhale by plants, sucking carbon dioxide from the sky, and the last two hundred years as a monstrous human-engineered exhale, undoing what the plants did so long ago.”
The Woks of Life cookbook
Okay, first time that a cookbook made it to my top of the year list. But my god, it’s more than a cookbook -- the whole Leung family wrote it together, and there’s pages and pages of their family history, including the dad’s recollections of growing up working in a Chinese restaurant in the Catskills, driving home every week from New York as an adult to help with the weekend rush. I’ve made the stirfry cabbage and drypot cauliflower and the shrimp thing with the frozen peas and DAMN. no joke people think im a cooking genius
The Memory Police, by Yoko Ogawa
It’s not a pyrotechnic novel, but a gentle, haunting one. On an unnamed island, things faded from the islanders’ memories: photographs, roses, perfume, birds, lighthouses. After awhile, people themselves start to fade away. I think of it as a COVID novel, even though it was written in the mid 90s.

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2022: i don't read many sequels but that kind of guy by talia hibbert is technically a sequel and i really enjoyed it!! also demisexual rep, which i didnt expect!!
New release you haven’t read yet but want to: i guess the stardust theif by chelsea abdullah but im not as up on the new releases as i once was

the adventures of amina al-sirafi by shannon chakraborty | DNF | 07/05/24 — 12/05/24 | read this as an audiobook and i absolutely adored the concept of the story, it was exactly the type of fun read i needed to get me out of my months long reading slump. story follows the notorious retired pirate amina al-sirafi as she gets roped into one last great adventure to end all adventures, i'm a sucker for found family, pirates, and "one last mission" stories and this marked all of those boxes. that being said, i did lose interest and stopped listening, will likely give it a try as a physical read in the future.
the poppy war by r.f. kuang | rating | 07/05/24 — 12/05/24 | read this physically, as someone who has been highly active in book spaces for over a decade i've heard so much praise for this story since its release (i think it came out in 2018???) while also somehow managing to know absolutely nothing about this story like literally i went into this completely blind and i absolutely loved that. it was so very good and not at all what i was expecting and was thoroughly suprised by how much i enjoyed it. took me a minute to get into it but then i could not put it down (i literally read almost 500 pages over the course of two days😭) that being said im letting anyone who may read this bc of me also go in blind.

my neighbor totoro : rewatch | ★★★★★ | stunning, spectacular, show stopping, amazing, breathtaking, beautiful, enchanting, brilliant, etc… one of my favorite ghibli films. i usually rewatch spirited away, ponyo, & howl's moving castle but this ended up being my ghibli film of the month (meaning i rewatched this quite a few times lmao)
big hero 6 : rewatch | ★★★★★ | again, show stopping amazing? incredible, never before done, original, breathtaking, etc… my favorite disney film of recent years and it's currently my 2-year-old nieces favorite movie too so i watched this one a lot this month too.

so to preface things, literally all of my fav books are fantasy/horror/dark fantasy/sci fi. dont like romance. so thats what i'll be recommending lol 😭
the poppy war (series) by rf kuang -- dark fantasy and historical -- uh yeah ive read this series twice and it rotates in my brain. if u like the "god forbid women do anything (like war crimes)" this is quite literally the mc. i adore her. the side characters are loveable and also sooooo bothersome and annoying. this is the most morally grey book ive ever read. it's just. words cant speak enough. really not a lot of romance in this series which i thoroughly enjoyed and instead there was a really big and important platonic relationship (between a girl and guy) which was cool. this also is based on the second sino-japanese war so VERY heavy and brutal themes. not a lot of gore tho iirc. just Dark. which i rly enjoyed.
the immortal devices (series) by cassandra clare -- fantasy and historical -- again this is one of my favorite series' ever. i read it so long ago but i cannot recommend it enough. im not one of those people that stays up to binge a book and i remember staying up till like 3am reading and i cried at the end. romance is a big part of this story but weirdly i think i was ok w it. also any of the shadowhunter books (which this series is from) is soooo good. this series made me like, realize in the first place that i loved Dark Things so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
gideon the ninth by tamsyn muir -- fantasy -- read this guy via audiobook and OOOUUGHHHHH it was good. gideon the mc is . [gestures] just very good. shes so sarcastic and Big Buff Lesbian rep. and then harrow is a little limp noodle necromancer. this series is just space necromancer lesbians, tho i will say that i DNFed the second book in this series after thoroughly enjoying the first bc the second book was solely in second person and it made me want to Die, and the first book never has any Sapphic Love but maybe the later books do ???? no idea. anyway this book made me realize my gender so like yeah idk [writhes on the floor]
also to mention -- six of crows series (fantasy, heist) and the folk of the air series (fantasy, royalty) and these series also make me go oouguuguguhughughgohog but i havent read them in eons but theyre extremely good and would recommend and theyre also more popular so i figured i dont need to sell these as much.

DISCLAIMER THIS UPDATE WAS WRITTEN ENTIRELY AT 3AM
Coming live to you all from finals season! It hasn’t actually been that bad thus far, just very long and tedious on account of the fact that I’m an art major. The pro is that most of my finals will be done before actual finals week meaning that I get to rest while my STEM friends suffer! The con is that I’m ALSO a science major so I’ll have to suffer a little with them. The third, more sinister (positive) thing is that my only science class this semester is human bio and I learned half that stuff last year anyways so I won’t actually be struggling LMAO. Anyways. My comic.
Got another very big burst of motivation this week because of my 3D class actually! I’ve been coming to the realization that I spend so much time meticulously planning things that it scares me out of just. Going and getting them done. The solution? Just jump right into it without worrying about it! So, instead of trying to power through the script before letting myself draw anything (which is the main thing I really want to get to right now), I’ve started thumbnailing the first scene since it’s the most solid part of the story so far and least subject to major changes! I recently edited it to fix up Lyssa’s conversation with Terry and cut out a couple characters who I didn’t think were necessary to the story, so it should be pretty smooth sailing to actually make those pages. It’s a much more exciting thing to work on in addition to working out some of the later plot threads- and it gives me a better idea of how long the comic will be in total. I was hoping to keep this one under 100 pages and it’s looking bleak given that the first scene is 25 pages (I AM TRYING TO CUT IT DOWN AND YET IT STILL LOOKS BLEAK) (I might just be underestimating how much I can fit on one page so we'll see) thumbnails
There are MANY other projects happening this week. I have finals for 3 of my classes! All of them are art classes! My 2D final is a puppet about rabies so that feels pertinent to this comic! I also did some secret santa work (hi CAPE crew)(also applied to the dndads winter exchange just for funsies) and finished a hat, and somehow managed to get the wrong knitting needles three times and then send the right set of knitting needles to my house instead of my college address so the future of this sweater is a little in the balance but I’m also gods specialest little boy and capable of anything I put my mind to and also JUST realized that I can make incredibly strong instant coffee in the microwave in my dorm instead of having to go out and spend money on it which is financially saving me but forever dooming my body. I did that at 7pm. mistake .I think Im’ doing other stuff but its 3am and i cannot for the life of me remember.

hi lilith!! omg i am loving it so far !! i'm reading two other things right now (so silly of me), so i'm reading the poppy war a little slow </3 i'm on page 100, but once i get into it, i am zooming through the chapters ! definitely could sit down and knock it out in just a few sittings out if i had more time!!
rin is still taking her classes in the part im at now, so i'm excited to see what happens later bc i honestly don't know anything about the book teheh. but it's written so well !! to me it has such a similar sort of feel to the early seasons of aot, so i'm really enjoying the atmosphere of it. and i like rin a lot! i feel like fantasy mc's (especially female ones) tend to be so annoying ahdfhahsd. but she's very interesting!!
omg i want to read babel too !! that's one of the books on my christmas list <3 i love academia books like that, so hopefully i can get to that one early next year hehe

HII!! Don’t worry about it, I hope things are settling down for you <3 tbh I’ve been awful about writing recently due to being so busy so I don’t blame you at all lol.
I read the poppy war series recently and I really liked them!! Def check the trigger warnings before reading as it’s heavy but I found it really interesting and well written so I’d 100% recommend it. I also had to read A Thousand Splendid Suns for school and thought it was very well written as well so I’d recommend that too. I tried reading Song of Achilles but to be honest I didn’t really enjoy it and had to DNF like 70 pages in which ik is an unpopular opinion 😭💔 it just wasn’t for me I really wasn’t a fan. I can’t think of anymore recs atm but if I do I’ll reply to this post with them or smth. If you have any book or fic recs please respond I’ve been looking for something new to read!! Atm I’m deciding between starting Anna Karenina or starting Wuthering Heights but I’m def open to other recs as well.

Short Poppy x MC fic, I'm not good at Poppy, but i hope you enjoy!
There were two things that pissed Poppy Min-Sinclair off and that was Bea Hughes, and people who harmed Bea Hughes.
So, she liked the girl and would literally bestow hell on anyone who hurt her precious Bea. Now, she would never admit it, but she loved the way Bea would handle her with her strong farm hands or look at her like no one else existed. She made Poppy truly feel special.
But, being the Queen, sacrifices had to be made, and Bea was one of them. Plus it didn’t help that the girl was after her crown. Poppy had too much to lose, something that would have a new meaning soon enough.
So the Zeta’s were in a war with the crosstown Theta’s of Sagenhaft University. It was rivalry week and Poppy tried to command her troops while trying to avoid Bea and her dumb farm smells.
Bea on the other hand was head over heels for Poppy. One taste is all it took and she was hooked. Poppy didn’t have time to waste on Bea and Bea couldn’t sit by and watch Poppy fail again.
The Theta’s had slipped some nair in the girls shampoo and Poppy fell victim. It was a crippling blow, bald was so not in season.
So Bea took it upon herself to get revenge for Zeta House. Theta house sat on top of the world it seemed like. It overlooked the campus from afar and Bea finally climbed atop the mountain of concrete, arriving in her sexy ass assassin gear.
There was no one around and the door happened to be open. It was time to get in and out, “a little J-lube will do ladies.” Bea added some lube to the wash bottles and made her way to the open balcony window.
Stepping out, she ran into the entire Theta squad. “Haha, hey everyone, this must not be the library.”
Back at Belvoire, it was Zeta movie night and all the girls were interrupted by the T. It was a picture of Bea handcuffed in her underwear with Theta makeup markings all over her body.
Poppy was pissed. She scrambled the troops and got ready to retaliate when she heard loud cheering and a car’s tires squealing away from out front.
The Theta’s disposed of Bea on the front lawn of the Zeta house and everyone came to check on her.
“Move!” Poppy demanded parting the sea of bodies. “Leave us! I need to be alone with Bea.”
“What the hell where you thinking wannabe?!”
“I wanted to help you Pops. You aren’t mad are you?”
“Mad! I’m furious! You aren’t a Zeta Bea! You broke a century old tradition! I don’t need your help! I had it under control.”
“I’m…im sorry, I just wanted to…” Bea tried.
“Save it, let’s get you inside.” Poppy said trying to pick up the blonde but Bea collapsed immediately to the ground wincing in pain.
“What’s wrong!?”
“My leg, I think it’s broken. It hurts.” Bea whined. The adrenaline had finally wore off.
“Next question is, Why are you so wet?” Poppy asked flipping on her flashlight. “You’re bleeding! What did they do to you!?” Poppy screamed. Rule number two was broken now.
“I’m getting really tired Pops, and cold.” Bea yawned closing her eyes.
“Don’t you go to sleep Bea! Stay awake, I need you…” Bea faded into a tiring sleep listening to Poppy panic and woke up soon in the hospital.
The shorter girl who she thought was Poppy wearing Bea’s ball cap, and was yelling at a nurse and Bea tried to sit up in her bed to stop her.
Sensing Bea wake, Poppy shoved the nurse out of the room and checked on Bea.
“How do you feel loser?” Poppy asked grinning.
“Better, I see my leg was broken.”
“Two places. You must have taken a good fall. What did they do to you?”
“After they tied me up and took pictures, one of the Theta’s walked me to the car but they slipped and tripped me so I fell down the stairs. I guess the steps cut me open and the landing broke my leg.” I didn’t feel any of it. I guess because I was outnumbered 140 to 1.”
“They’ll pay for this. Zeta or not. No one touches you but me. You got that Farmsville?”
“You’re my hero Poptart.” Bea mocked.
“You belong to me, and as your Queen, it’s my job to protect all my followers, even you.”
“Or maybe you like me.” Bea teased.
“Maybe I just needed you for recon. That way I can plan out next attack.” Poppy smirked.
“You need me for more than recon. Oh Bea! Don’t fall asleep, I need you…” Bea teased recalling her final moments last night.
“First off, I don’t sound like that, and second, you must have hit your head, because you’re saying nonsense.”
“Just admit you like me Pops. Admit that you need me.”
“Maybe I do. Maybe I need you desperately.” Poppy spoke straddling Bea on the bed.
“Maybe I need you on my thrown, by my side as MY Queen.”
Bea grinned as she accepted Poppy’s fury of kisses.

speaking of ur cass playlist hc...reminds of the time (yesterday) i found 2 playlists randomly on spotify from the same user. one was abt 3 hours of instrumental/classical "dark" & "nostalgic" music. the other almost 11 hours of nothing but hardcore bass/synth/electronic music. just an incredible tightrope act to put on in public. the synth one was also called like "psalms for synth sluts" which is Also incredible
