Go go go cutscene cutscene cutscene!!!
been thinking about one of my favorite undertale fics lately, it’s like. the best undertale fic to me if not the best fic on ao3 period. i liek it so much. it’s the scientist series by talkingsoup and i will Never stop talking about like i Know i have mentioned it before but i am physically incapable of shutting up about it. it’s so good. i once tried to get my best friend to read it even though she doesn’t know english but i tried to convince her to read it with google translate (it didn’t last long but it was worth the effort). it’s So Good. i discovered it in like 2018 or 2019 and have reread it at least two times since it’s just like AUEHGGHHH. gaster’s downfall and then him haunting the narrative … the exploration of sans’ backstory …… the characterizations ………. it’s all very well written and also very dark and traumatic. They make Shit happen to these characters. but it gets better. i think ? i have never finished the series because iirc it only finished around a year ago and i haven’t reread it since. but i am Thinking about it. it’ll probably take me months because 1. i have to come to terms with the fact that one of my favorite stories will be Finished(tm) 2. i have to hype myself up to reread it because it’s a very long series with like 400k words or something AND the second installment is verrrry dark and heavy considering it explores the whole reset bullshit and flowey is putting sans through 29263937 meatgrinders

My Demon - 7/10
Tumblr media
The announcement of My Demon literally created chaos among the k-drama fans. The Song Kang-Kim Youjung pairing was making everyone insane. The hype was unreal. But did My Demon live up to it? Well, the answer to that would be… yes or no (kissy if u read that in Na Bora’s voice). My Demon did have a very interesting plot line, good enough characters and it was successful in getting the audiences hooked with the first few episodes. The cinematography was the most talked about among the viewers and rightfully so. The wide shots of Jung Guwon’s (Song Kang) office, the underwater scene, the slow-mo shot of the waves forming a portal around Guwon and Dohee (Kim Youjung), the Dohee-about-to-fall-off-the-balcony scene and so on. Another thing that filled twitter was the fashion. And not only the female lead’s this time, but also the male leads. Guwon has secured his place among the very few male leads with impeccable fashion sense. When most male leads are shown in sophisticated suits, Guwon was rocking cropped jackets and scarfs. But then again, I don’t think most male leads are Song Kang.
Nevertheless, My Demon stands as an example that if you start with a bang, your ending should be a banger. This is where the drama failed. In the second half, it started to feel like the story line was being stretched. The cinematography and direction which was so good in the start had taken a back seat and love making montages were put in for the action that wasn’t happening. And by action, I mean just anything that would contribute to the plot. The plot was moving, but at a very slow pace. Sure, Guwon and Dohee make the best couple, the greenest flag couple, the entire amazon rainforest couple, but where is the drama? I wasn’t necessarily waiting for anything bad to happen, but for a time being literally nothing was happening. And I was mad about that. Until towards to the end, everything happened. The new trend of k-drama rom-coms only having 12 episodes, My Demon should’ve followed that. Because the more they stretched, the more Song Kang’s bad acting showed and also the writer’s inability to stitch it all together. I honestly loved Song Kang in Sweet Home, not that he had any more than 2 expressions 3 dialogues in it, but still. Jung Guwon is far more expressive, and Song Kang couldn’t do justice. He shines when the camera requires for him to be the slayest demon to walk this planet, but when it is time for the playful babygirl Guwon to get on stage, his acting feels like… acting. It’s not terrible, it’s just not the best. Also the entire past life plot is becoming more than obvious. The moment I saw Guwon dreaming of his past, I KNEW Guwon and Dohee probably died in the past life and one of them thinks it’s their fault and they will try to distance themselves from each other. You know which other drama did it? See You in My 19th Life and Destined with You and maybe more but I don’t remember. Like can we please move on? This is equivalent to the 2016 era dramas having the oh we’ve actually met in childhood and not forgotten each other since trope. But then again, they have given us the most iconic dramas, can’t the same about these though.
However, I loved the way they showed Jin Gayoung’s character coming full circle. She is probably the only one who started a certain way, learned her lessons, had character development and got her happy ending. So yeah, My Demon definitely isn’t the best drama for me. I am not going to put in on my re-watch list. But I will recommend it. It’s fun, and sweet, and great for fashion inspo!
Another thing I want to add is that My Demon is compared to Doom at Your Service a lot for having a similar concept, so I’ll just say that DAYS is a much better drama, for all aspects – storyline, acting, romance, comedy, THE FUCKING AWESOME THREESOME OF THE SECOND LEAD THRUPPLE, even the song (If Love Sight by TXT doesn’t play in my head when I look at my future partner, I’ll know they’re not the one). Except My Demon is going to take the trophy for best costume.
Ok that’s it now let me play Hyunsu’s “What should we do?” until Sweet Home S3 comes out hehe!

Omg I’m so happy you replied!! I definitely have more questions.
1. What Cillian character do you like writing about the most and why?
2. What story from your master list are you most proud of?
3. Do you personally have any fic recommendations/ must reads? Other sites included.
4. What gets you inspired to write? Following that question have you ever abandoned a fic?
5. What do you think made you a better writer? If you have any doubts about your work, how do you get past it enough to continue?
6. Is there a Cillian character that you just don’t like, or aren’t interested in watching/ writing about? (Sorry if that’s a loaded question)
omg thank u so much for this!!! i srsly love interacting w u guys, tysm for the thought provoking questions😄🙌
i think i like writing most about robert fischer:) ik it probably doesnt translate considering ive written most for jonathan crane but robert fischer is just such a little sweetheart to me,,, and can go both ways in being a sassy dom douchebag or being a sobbing daddy issues sub darling LOLLL i just think he has a lot of duality to delve into and develop (which ive definitely not done so far☠️) and it helps that his characterization in inception was also very surface level— i have a lot of wiggle room y’know??
i think im most proud of “dine & dash” which im aware probably no-one has read, but getting chris o’doyle’s sassy little dialogue down was like taming a wild beast,,, otherwise, considering my more well-known work, i rly liked writing “honey, i’m home”. i go crazy for the unhinged readers (if u couldnt alrdy tell lmaooo) and seeing jackson get messed with like that was a real treat.
i seriously just recommend anything by @mypoisonedvine,,, they’re literally genius & are the reason i started writing for cillian:)!! other mentions include kitten fics by @pictureinme and, a personal fave, @floralcyanidee’s jackson rippner mile-high club fic!!! these writers are all incredibly talented and im just blown away at their work every single time🫶
my thirst is such a big motivator for writing LMAO😭i wrote “guinea pig” ‘cus i wanted to absolute wreckkk jonathan crane and have him be a sub, and i got a 6.8k words long fic out of said thirst! music & book quotes motivate me a lot too— i spend sm time digging thru my pinterest for a good quote for the beginning of my fic its actually insane☠️and yes,,, im ashamed to say ive abandoned fics numerous times,,, but thats because they were series’, not oneshots. i get bored of series’ pretty quickly, ‘cause i feel kind of trapped by the initial dynamic or mood set in the first chapter. with oneshots, its like writing one long chapter of this trope and this kink or whatever and then its done, and i dont have to exhaust myself going back to tropes or kinks or storylines ive already done.
i think reading made me a better writer. expanding my vocabulary through the words of others was a biggie; seeing something be described in a certain way in someones story had me thinking of out-of-the-box ways to describe another thing (that doesn’t make much sense but lets pretend it does😭). i have many, many doubts about my work, like constantly, but i usually just suck it up. i sound like an attention whore but seeing the reposts & comments & tags on my other work reminds me people like what i’ve written before and certain people will enjoy what ive written now, so i should just finish my work for them. i also take like 100 years rereading my stuff until i think its good enough lmao,,,
ive kinda watched his whole roster of films (atleast ones i could actually find on the internet and not gone missing as a lost piece of media lmao) and i could probably write for any cillian character given i had a good idea and proper motivation. writing for certain characters is definitely harder for me to do though, so its likely i wont write for them/will take a long time to do so. an example is lenny miller— anna was such an insufferable movie to me, and lenny’s screentime wasn’t long at all, atleast not long enough for me to properly grasp his character. he just felt like a horny hardass fbi goof the whole time i could not take his 5’7 ass seriously😭cillian is smexy as hell in anna tho, so we’ll see😈another would probably be robert capa from sunshine,,, hes beautiful and deliciously musty in that but the whole spaceship setting kinda freaks me out (considering i know 0 zilch nada about space, spaceships, or anything of the sort, so it’d definitely be inaccurate). an au with him id definitely do, though! (with that hair of his my mind is already forming a 90s band au, guitarist!capa x singer!reader story…)
again thank u so much for these questions!! i feel like i rarely get to chat to u guys so this was well appreciated😄🫶thank you so much for reading, for sending these questions in, and for being an overall sweetheart, anon!

i wanna try to get into enstars bc i like pjsk (even tho i am so bad at it) and also am gay but i find it overwhelming and confusing can u give me some tips or something
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Absolutely, I will do my best to help! It's very, very overwhelming and a lot so I don't blame you at all! I'll put everything under a cut because I'm autistic and very excited and have a Lot of links and things!
First, absolutely watch the Enstars anime. This will go over the main points / ideas of the Main Story of the first game (aka ! era). Strongly recommend watching in sub because the dub isn't very good.
Then, watch Element. This goes over the Element Arc of ! Era Main Story. They cover this in the main anime but not as good.
There's also a movie, which I have but I don't have a link for it. If you'd like the download + subtitle file for it, just shoot me an ask or dm me at @shinobukawajiri and I can help out! But it's not super lore important or anything so don't worry.
Alright! So you've seen the anime! Now you can get into the music. You could also listen to songs before the anime, really whatever you want! For this, I'd suggest going to the wiki and picking a Unit! Check out their discography, which you can view from their wiki page and give the songs a listen. You can find all of them on YT! I'd definitely listen to a couple songs from all units to get a feel because they all have very different sounds! If there's a music genre you like let me know, and I can recommend some songs / units! There's also some Temporary Units + Shuffle Units, which have music as well that you can listen to! If you'd like some recommendations, lmk!
Now, after viewing the anime, and listening to songs, pick a Unit or some characters you like and focus on stories for them! Since there's a lot of stories it's better to just pick some favorites and go from there. Crazy:B and Alkaloid were introduced in !! era / the second game, so you won't see them in the anime, if they're of interest to you. Here is a guide for important stories from the first game for the characters in that.
To access stories for the first game / ! Era, you'll have to use the wayback machine, or you can just look up (story name) tl / translation on Google, and you should usually be able to find what you need, since they were forced to take down any tls on the wiki.
Now, there's two games as I've established. The first game is completely in Japanese, and I'd rely on Story translations from the wayback machine wiki. As for the new game, you can play in English! It's accessible from the appstore, but remember, this takes place AFTER the other game! You absolutely do not have to know all the lore / read all the stories or anything to play! I'm just mega autistic so lmao. But the English version of Enstars Music doesn't have the best translations, but it is more accessible. Though, if you become super invested like me and my partner, you can absolutely download the Japanese version of the game!
There's lots of people on Twitter who translate and things for the stories + general game things and id be happy to direct to them if you find yourself super enjoying the Series!
Basically it is VERY difficult bc there's also drama cds, stageplays, manga, but finding things translated or just finding them can take work but ofc all that isn't required. In general just have fun!!! Don't be deterred and like I said I'm more than happy to help find things or whatever anyone needs! Since my partner has been more invested for longer than me, we both can do our best to help!!
Also a note from said partner ;
to my wife’s autism anon: i am also autistic . enstars has been my favorite thing in the entire world since the ripe and beautiful year of 2019. this source is beautiful , fun , indulgent , deep as all hell , and So So So much to unpack . there is no such thing as a background character in enstars . there are 50 characters who are all so deeply fleshed out and have so much content and backstory to them so i am absolutely certain you will find somebody that appeals to you . enstars can have some pretty heavy topics at times it’s not your run of the mill happy idol franchise, but if you like project sekai (which i also LOVE) you will Love enstars . the game is so much fun , the characters are so deep and interesting and real , the stories are engaging and silly and wonderful, you will love it. you Have to. for me . stan knights

How did you get into writing and how did u get into this "scene". you've made me get to know myself better and I love your stories so much so I was curious if there was a story for you or a life event that got you into this "kink"?? Sorry I don't know how to word this better. Also do you have any sapphic book recommendations or any story recs. Have a great day <3
Hey hey,
Interesting question! It's a long story, so buckle in.
I've always been kind of kinky. Even when I was little (think 6 or 7 years old) I'd have thoughts and daydreams about the older girls or teachers at school forcibly like, cuddling or kissing me, even when I'd refuse. Obviously, I didn't know what it meant at the time and it was mostly sort of innocent, I just knew that I found it exciting.
Anyway, fast-forward to when I found a way to get around the child lock that my parents put on my Internet access and I got unrestricted access at about 13 years old. I had started puberty and stumbled across erotic fiction on 'Literotica.' That's when I read this story for the first time: https://www.literotica.com/s/student-lesbian-bdsm
And it put into words all the things I'd fantasised about for ages. I wanted a relationship like Erica and Anna had. Now, obviously, I realise this story is awful BDSM etiquette and very abusive in a lot of senses. Still, at the time it was an eye-opener and I fell headlong into the world of lesbian BDSM erotic fiction.
Then, at around 15-ish, I started to write my own erotic fiction in my iPod Touch notes. These stories were absolute filth and were extreme self-inserts of a main character definitely modeled on me, and the love interests were modeled after teachers and various authority figures in my life. I recently found my iPod and read the stuff I used to write - it was actually very good and well-written, but obviously, some of the descriptions of how s*x felt weren't totally believable hahaha.
Anyway, fast-forward to when I was about 22. I'd had a lot more sexual experiences since being at university, but it wasn't necessarily always kinky. When I was doing my Masters, I got into a relationship with someone who was a lot older than me and into kink - we began a mildly D/s relationship that was pretty stable for the most part but I just wasn't in the right place for it. She taught me a lot about myself, kink, and sex. As a way to procrastinate doing my Dissertation, I began writing about made-up characters again - and I stumbled across AO3 for the first time and also the SwanQueen fandom. From there I just sort of incorporated some of the way my relationship ran between my then-GF/domme and myself.
That's the long and short of it really! I've been writing for a lot, lot, longer than I've been sharing my work with you guys.
As for fic recommendations - I have loads but I'll share my all-time favourite fics:
Sugar Baby by TheEvangelion
Sugar and Spice by ScribblingPunk
Make Yourself At Home by PrincessPestilience
Lady Beneviento and Her Gift by LadyV_writes
She Who Waits in The Dark by Lyris_Lionheart
Hope that answers your question!

how do you find so much music to listen to? i don't have any friends who like music as much as i do, so i end up getting all my recs from tumblr, but i feel like i'm perpetually lagging behind all my cool mutuals. also, i feel like it takes me a long time to listen to an album and form a conclusive opinion on it, but you seem like you can knock that shit out super fast (remembering that music rating project u did). any tips for broadening my library? thank u and have a great day
This has been in here forever but i never took the time to answer it, i'm sorry! Hopefully belated is better than not at all
Long story short, it's one of those things where the more music you listen to, the more you find to listen to, so once you get to a certain point it's a bit of a self-perpetuating thing. That said, i do have some tips, and a lot of them will be really basic but i'm writing this more as a general thing for people who want to listen to more / different music but don't know where to start:
something that really helps (and especially helped when i was first getting suuuuuper into music listening and criticism as a main hobby of mine (i used to write actual full length reviews instead of the tiny capsules i do on twitter lol)) is just lists! As bullshit as stuff like Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" or the p4k decade lists are, they're undoubtably great overviews of things from the perspective of each outlet that puts them out, and i definitely only got into certain bands or albums because they were canonized in some way or another. plus, if one outlet's lists seem to vibe with you consistently well (for example, Tiny Mix Tapes' decade and year end lists are so very much my shit that i'd listen to almost everything on them) you can follow that site and see what they're reviewing and liking now (RIP TMT for many reasons but losing this especially from them was a bummer for me)
in addition, more narrow lists are great for if you want to get into something specific but don't know where to start. a lot of times, if i want to check out a specific genre but don't know anything about it, i'll check out the RYM "top 5" of whatever that genre is (RYM has its own clear biases and limitations, but especially for smaller microgenres i find it a super helpful starting point) or i'll literally just google "best reggaton albums of all time" or something similar and check out the albums everyone is recommending. canonization is problematic, but by looking into what the majority of people have come to call the best of a certain style or genre or period of time can give you an idea of what the tropes and characteristics of something are, and you can branch out from there if you see yourself digging at least parts of it.
from there, once i have a good starting point, i will both look up smaller / more personal lists (individual people's "best of" lists are always way more interesting than ones multiple people voted on because there's nearly always a curveball or two) and dive deep on both "suggested" similar bands as well as looking into the label or people they made music with, other projects by the same creators, etc., and that can get you quickly off the mainstream road and into fun little sidestreets.
then, last but not least, i will literally just search bandcamp or a music torrent site (by which of course i mean a place where you completely legally buy music and never pirate it) for a specific tag or genre or year and download the ones with covers i like lol. this is way more likely to lead you to mediocre or bad music, but like, that fairy pop album by diana starshine i loved last year i found exactly by searching for i think "hyperpop" on bandcamp. i saw the cover, liked it, checked out a few tracks, and voila. it's shallow and doesn't pay off all the time, but honestly it's been surprisingly successful for me in the past (except when it comes to post 00's j-pop, for some reason many of the best j-pop album covers contain some of its blandest music).
idk if any of that helps but yeah

im becoming a fan bc of spiderverse and i love your blog <3 ive seen a couple wes anderson movies/scott pilgrim but are there any movies or shows you’d recommend? thank u!!
okay so fair warning, outside of the animated movies, the wes anderson ones, and spvtw, pretty much all jschwartz movies and shows are going to contain something mildly graphic at the least. usually it's weird sex which I think is awesome but I can't recommend viewing if you're a minor (most of my followers aren't tho so I'm not worried)
anyway, here are recs with my personal thoughts! (reading the little reviews is not mandatory but suggested? I guess if you want a better idea of what you're getting into)
Shopgirl (2005)
Besides Steve Martin's absolutely rancid performance, I'm actually a huge fan of this movie and I think it's so enjoyable. it's not a masterpiece, but there was clearly a lot of intent and thought put into the design choices and cinematography (I've written papers on the color symbolism!) and though the story isn't amazingly coherent because it was adapted from a much better written novella, it is still at least enjoyable. I love the atmosphere, and I think it's a very unconventional romance film that explores the unhealthy relationships that are glamorized in similar media as sexy and desirable (ray porter is a character that existed before, and yet still makes fun of toxic love interests like christian gray). and I like how it extremely accurately represents what it's like being a severely depressed lonely woman.
I'm inherently biased here because I watched this movie for the first time while I was in an abusive relationship and it still really resonates with me. most people luckily do not experience that so I'm a bit of an outlier here :')
2. I Heart Huckabees (2004)
I have no deeper reason for loving IHH I just find it delightful. it's weird, it's confusing, its kinda gross, it's shocking and you don't start understanding it unless you think about it really hard for a while. it's essentially a beginner's guide to different schools and concepts in philosophy, which I'm a big ol sucker for. lovely message that I believe is handled better than a lot of movies who go for the existentialism thing. not a fan of the director, but this movie is pretty enjoyable and leaves you with a lot to think about (if you're into that). LOVE the score.
3. Spun (2002)
INITIAL WARNING THIS MOVIE IS DISGUSTING. and I love it. it's so fun and experimental especially with the editing and cinematography, the pacing is insane, not to the mention the animation, the color correction, the everything... has one of the most amazingly satisfying closing shots in a movie, ever. but it's definitely not for the faint of heart, if you can't sit through watching someone snort meth off a urinal stall or a close up of someone injecting themselves with a needle, this is definitely not for you. (not to mention the sex, again).
4. Marie Antoinette (2006)
yayy finally an option that most people agree is good! unless you're French. I was almost named Antoinette after my French g-g-gma (got named after my French g-g-g-gpa Raymond instead), plus rococo is a huge interest of mine so I adore this movie. it was shot on location at Versailles, the costumes are GORGEOUS, and almost everything is accurate! it has a mixed classical-modern soundtrack and aesthetic that I find very effective in getting its message across. however I do tend to like this movie more than most because I know who everyone is and what's happening already! it's based on a biography by Antonia Frasier which is sitting next to me as I type this lol.
5. Funny People (2009)
HEAR ME OUT. OKAY. mark taylor jackson was my "ohhh shit this dude's hot" moment and this movie was The Beginning for me. YES, it's an Adam Sandler movie co-starring Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill. AND YES. I FIND IT TO BE AN EFFECTIVE DRAMA. I don't like drama in film in general, I find most to be very unrealistic and unrelatable for me so I get bored easily, but I do think this weirdly works? I love how it's kind of an introspective look at Adam Sandler's career, with liberties taken, and the characters seem to actually have some chemistry and realism to them, even in the sillier moments. jason schwartzman is super cute. need I say more.
6. S1m0ne (2002)
ok, admittedly jason isn't in this one too much. and yet it's still worth mentioning because it's an insanely underrated and likeable movie! if anything al pacino is hot, and the entire premise is so unsettling and dystopian in an ACTUALLY WELL HANDLED sci-fi manner (good sci-fi concepts tend not to be "what ifs" but allegories for things that are actually happening already). S1m0ne is a criticism of hollywood, celebrity culture, and mass media, and it's genuinely just so creative to me. another contender for the best ending shot in cinema. ALSO, very pretty cinematography and a very fun early 2000s feel to it. the writer/director also wrote the Truman Show iirc!
7. Bored to Death
saving TV for last. let me tell you one thing! if you're looking for jason schwartzman at his best, you need to watch this show. it is so funny, so entertaining, and best of all, every character in it is so terrible and fucked up and it's wonderful. it's crazy, but grounded in reality, which makes it even crazier. jason schwartzman plays a hopeless romantic author who's boredom and disappointing love life lead him to becoming an "unlicensed private detective" who accepts jobs through craigslist. also there are zach galifianakis and ted danson, who play the two other main characters. the entire premise of the show is these three guys getting high and solving mysteries together and it's phenomenal. there's an actual episode where jason runs down the streets of brooklyn in full leather bdsm gear. there's an episode about furry sex. It's so weird and perverted and SUCH a good comedy noir(?) I can't not recommend it, despite having the worst fucking ending out of anything ever cause it got canceled.
tldr: I like bad movies
there are a ton more I could go ok about but these are the ones I personally enjoy the most. good luck

this might be cliche... but who are your favorite authors/artists?? influences in general? aside from donna tartt?? your writing and the network of little references sprinkled in them literally make me want to tear out my wallpaper and eat it it's so good wtf do you put in it dear author?????
gosh so many things. if it's not glaringly obvious I am a huge media person so books/film/tv are all things I love and consume voraciously. I've always been a big big reader. I've made a list of some of my favorite book recs here as well as some of my favorite films here
I'm also a big lover of the ballet and the city I live in has a large company which I go to watch every chance I get, the last one I saw was swan lake and it was wonderful :) I've found it's a great source of inspiration when it comes to choreography on the page. when writing large amounts of physical scenes ie. sex or action or what have you physical descriptors and body placements become tedious and repetitive and I like looking to dance as a source for differentiation in my own written choreography. If you're a writer I'd definitely recommend for physical aspects!
I also obviously really love art and although I wouldn't say I'm very well studied or deeply knowledgeable on the subject I know what I like and have a clear grasp on my tastes. I'm endlessly scrolling Pinterest for visuals that inspire me, and I'm also a big museum person and as I travel a fair amount, whenever I'm traveling I go to lots of museums.
not to sound cliche as well but music is also obviously and of course a big influence in my work. when I was writing greener memories of better men I'd initially gotten the idea from this random Facebook post I'd seen but the true tone of the story came from the song The Weight by The Band. After writing several different versions of Joel's so in depth I've found now I'm worried about becoming repetitive in my characterization of him which is tricky because it's extremely extremely important to me that my iterations of him be true to his canon personality. I'm not a big fan of an OOC Joel and it's important to me to always stay true to who I think he really is in his original story personality wise, u know? but at the same time it becomes difficult navigating the inevitability of monotony when writing the same character over and over again. so I suppose what I try to do each time is provide a different view of the same man. for some reason that song brought that version of him I was trying to write very into focus for me at that moment. I don't know if that makes a lot of sense lol but sometimes inspiration or direction arises from strange places.
I feel like I've talked too much about Nabokov this year but I've been very slowly studying his work this year and I feel he's been a huge influence on my tone and cadence as I've progressed. I feel like he switches between having a very complicated way of saying very simple things and then saying very complicated things in very simple ways. he's also a master at sentence structure - again when trying to avoid monotony - I like studying the way he crafts these truly complicated sentences into a single monolith without ever actually breaking any rules of grammar or if he does it's in a way that doesn't seem wrong, if u know what I mean. he also comes up with he strangest metaphors for the smallest things. the last thing I read he describes a man's face as a "wet galosh" to tell us he was morose or sad or what have you and it's just soooo funny and interesting to me. I need my own mind to work in strange and creative ways like that, I'm trying to train it into doing so
if you're eating your wallpaper please make sure it isn't yellow, we don't want you getting trapped!

hai do u have any danmei recs? maybe with the reason why you like them?
haiiiiii hm well to say i don't would be a lie but truly i am very mainstream with the danmei i read so i doubt you haven't read them before
all of mxtx's stuff is really good and worth a try but tgcf is always going to be my favorite. there's a new revised version out by now i am pretty sure which is all the more reason to check it out. the plot beats are clever, xie lian is one of the most compelling main characters ever written, but i think the worldbuilding is what makes it so good. you can tell it was crafted very lovingly and the cultural aspects make it twice as interesting! hua cheng is also very jean-coded to me
i think mdzs needs no introduction but if you're into more somber stories it will definitely please you, the political intrigue is well written and all character dynamics are very compelling. i reread mdzs every few months and i always come out of it obsessed with a new character so i feel like, if you're coming from aftg, it will be the smoothest transition. that being said wangxian are VERY into cnc and i know it can be an issue for some people so i would suggest avoiding the extra if it's a total turn off for you. if it's no issue, i'd also say that if you read mdzs and end up not liking jin ling you will no longer be welcome in my page
qiang jin jiu/ballad of sword and wine is one of my favorites but it is VERY extensive and it goes really deeply into politics, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. the main characters are truly nasty to each other at first but their relationship develops into one of my favorite dynamics i've ever read, and their scenes together are pretty sweet and intimate. this novel also has a canonical lesbian couple in the bg, though i am pretty sure you only get more information on that in the extras, which is always nice :) again i am repeating that this one is famously heavy on the politics so be aware of that! also some pretty graphic scenes of gore torture and abuse
2ha/dumb husky and his white cat shizun is good but i will say that meatbun's specialty is not plot and you can tell. if you're reading 2ha you're most likely reading it for the character dynamics and the worldbuilding, which are always amazing, but the plot is convoluted and in desperate need of some heavier editing. yuwu/remnants of filth suffers from a similar fate but has the essential flaw of not having chu wanning in it so i don't recommend it as much, BUT there are two characters who are kevriko in another world for sure
i think that is all? i picked up stars of chaos recently for the milfisms and i do plan to finish it eventually but i can't say for sure if it's good yet

all of this trigun posting is making me interested... which version of the anime would you recommend someone watch first?
okay i took so long to answer this because i was trying to find my screencaps from the manga because in all honesty. u should read the manga. its so fucjing good i cannot stress it enough. trimax is fantastic
but as far as anime, id say you should watch trigun 98. its a bit of a different story than tristamp or trimax, but its told extremely well and really balances the goofiness with the tragedy. wolfwood specifically is different but hes fantastic. "its kind of a long story, although its kind of a short one" and "my cross is so big because its full of mercy" are definitely some of my favorite lines from him. highly reccomend tri98
tristamp is. not my favorite. i dont like it very much at all. the character designs bug the hell out of me and the story is rushed because theyre trying to fit the manga into ten episodes. but its not bad, i just really reccomend reading trimax instead. @trigun-manga-overhaul is a fan project to retranslate the manga including trimax, you shouldntotally check them out!!

Cam u give us some recs of Weird And Good Stuff? 👀
absolutely I can! I've been sitting on this ask for a few days because I wanted to give it the attention that it deserves and it's got me thinking a lot about the things that I personally consider "Good" and/or "Weird" stuff.
this is especially interesting to think about as someone who has Very Specific media tastes and did not exactly grow up exposed to the most mainstream stuff: I was raised by 90s hipsters, homeschooled, then went to an alternative school, and have only lived in one city/only worked at one institution my whole life--all of these were/have been great experiences for me, however I understand that this means I do not exactly have the best idea of what constitutes mainstream or popular media. I definitely have the tendency to lean towards pretentiousness/snobbery (as I have been told), in part because it seems to me that, by definition, the things that are part of the mainstream have less depth and heart to them than the obscure things; the things I have fallen in love with, by and large, are the obscure things. I have been confounded my whole life by the experience of coming across beautiful, meaningful works of art and then being baffled when nobody else is talking about them, as well as the mirrored experience of being exposed to the mainstream and being completely unable to understand what people are getting out of it. (are obscure and weird the same thing? something else to think about.)
that being said, I don't think any of these things are the Weirdest it gets. but they are certainly things beyond the general public "mainstream" consciousness, and they are defintely things that I think deserve more recognition as great works of art. just keep in mind I am aware that it does get a lot weirder and more obscure than this.
also, of course it's easiest to give recommendations if I already know the taste of the person I am recommending things to, so all of this will depend on your own personal taste, especially where music and books are concerned. but regardless, here are a bunch of my favorite Weird/Good things:
books:
-if you know me or have been following me at all, you already know about this but I'm gonna have to plug Skippy Dies. most perfectly constructed/researched/executed/painful book of all time. I will recommend it until my dying breath. this is one of those things that seems so exemplary of the genre that I absolutely cannot believe is not more well-known. however, I did also just read Paul Murray's third novel, the Mark and the Void, and that's something I can absolutely recommend as well. I think it's weirder than Skippy Dies, at least in that it heavily revolves around the metafictional and recursive idea that the author, Paul, has created a fictionalized version of himself as a character in the story who is himself trying to write the book that eventually will become the book itself. it's incredibly funny and smart and bizarre. also you will learn a lot about investment banking.
-I also must recommend the book that I was obsessed with before Skippy Dies, and though it wasn't to the same extent, it's still a wonderful novel that more people should read: Everything Matters! by Ron Currie Jr. it's similar in theme/message to Skippy Dies but much shorter and less complex. (the cover illustration was my first tattoo. I still love it, I just love Skippy Dies more. this book feels like my amicably divorced spouse.)
-Daniel Handler is well-known under his pen name Lemony Snicket as the author of the Series of Unfortunate Events, but his adult novels under his real name are fantastic, especially The Basic Eight. it's a kind of a satire of 90s true-crime tell-alls: think Heathers but self-referential and about snobby teenagers who are obsessed with poetry and theater. fantastic book. one of the best plot twists of all time. I also liked his book Watch Your Mouth: super weird story about incest and Jewish mysticism kind of told through the narrative of an opera.
-Steve Erickson is one of my favorite authors overall, and surprisingly few people know about him. his novels often have an element of surreal realism/magical realism, but it doesn't play too much into the plot; weird things are mentioned offhand and then not really treated as weird. there's a fair amount of historical fiction, and it's also common for his plot threads/characters to show up in multiple novels; he even does the metafictional thing of sometimes having himself appear as a character. my favorites of his are probably These Dreams of You and the Sea Came in at Midnight. But they're all lovely and most are interconnected in some way.
-Nancy Huston is another one of my favorite authors who people don't know about, though she seems to have more traction in Canada. I love her writing style and her stories are very character-focused, often about darkly intimate relationships and tensions between parents and children. these might be harder to find, but my favories are Instruments of Darkness and Slow Emergencies.
-Tom Robbins is fairly well-known, but if you haven't read him I highly recommend it. there's no one in the world writing like Tom Robbins; he's an excellent satirist without leaning into the cynical, and his novels are bizarre and hilarious while also seemingly to impart some kind of deep truths about humanity. Even Cowgirls Get the Blues is a classic, but they're all wonderful. I particularly liked Still Life With Woodpecker.
-George Saunders is also fairly well-known these days, but he's an excellent excellent writer. Weird funny true sometimes-satire. I recommend his short story collection Tenth of December.
-very well known but Geek Love (Katherine Dunn) is a masterpiece of the weird and disturbing. everything that AHS:Freakshow could have been.
-I really enjoyed Ben Lerner's recent book the Topeka School; like many things on this list, it's metafiction/autofiction, very strongly based on his life but through a fictionalized lens. it's a beautifully structured book, and you'll learn a lot about debate club and poetry.
-Jenny Offill's books Department of Speculation and Weather are both delicious little nuggets of insightful and concise observations. super short and super beautiful. they'll make you want to write more.
-Jamie Iredell wrote a small press book in the past couple years called The Fat Kid. I adored it. disturbing and surreal look into the ways that men destroy each other; an exploration of toxic masculinity without misogyny. highly reccomend.
-another gorgeous small press book: memoir called What About the Rest of Your Life by Sung Yim
-Amelia Gray writes wonderfully strange short stories. I love her collections Gutshot and AM/PM.
-Nell Zink is another recent author who I always jump at the chance to read. similar to Steve Erickson, her books always feel like a strange mix of surreal and realistic. I really liked Mislaid and Doxology.
-Maggie Nelson wrote a book called Bluets that I love, a meditation on being in love with the color blue. she also wrote the somewhat-more-well-known book the Argonauts, which is part memoir part queer theory. very good.
-Leni Zumas is one of the best weird authors around. her stories are always very visceral and surreal. all her stuff is good: her short story collection is Farewell Navigator, and her novels are The Listeners and Red Clocks
-Carmen Maria Machado has also gained some traction in the last couple years, and deserves it. she's an excellent horror writer; an expert at making normal things feel unsettling and threatening. she has a short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties, as well as a memoir, In the Dream House, which is about her experience being trapped in an abusive queer relationship. it's so fucking good.
(pro tip: get an epub reader on your phone. libgen.is your friend.)
music:
-They Might Be Giants have been good and weird since the 80s, and continue to be just as good and just as weird. they have a massive discography, so if you're unfamiliar with them, start with the album Flood. or just start from the beginning. it's literally all good.
youtube
-most of these fall into post-punk/indie rock; some of my favorite lesser known bands in this category include Mighty, Weatherbox, Krill, Hop Along, and Shoe
https://youtu.be/S1ZBkmA-kS4
https://youtu.be/iH7WqUBVRDs
https://youtu.be/iX3dItyNnyA
youtube
youtube
-Pile is a post-punk/post-hardcore band that never gets enough love. genius writing, beautiful riffs, some of the best screaming around. another one of my tattoos.
https://youtu.be/XSJ6xdhClVU
-Fat History Month is delightful and lo-fi, if that's your thing: https://youtu.be/RtsAP0fdOXE
-not particularly weird per se, but not enough people know about Sir Chloe. their new album is flawless. it's just good music.
https://youtu.be/3x554vRA9Ic
-Man Man is delightfully catchy and weird:
youtube
-the co-creator of one of my favorite shows (Venture Bros) is now the guitarist in a band called Pageant Girls, and their first album is great. minor-key 80s synth ballad rock.
https://youtu.be/Zd9H_9BXsYA
-WHY? is hard to describe--experimental indie alternative hip hop?--but it's definitely weird. start with the album Alopecia.
https://youtu.be/acJ3hiRxWUk
-mewithoutYou is another of my favorites; strange tempos and spoken-word vocals and excellent screaming. probably the best band ever to see live. every album is good, but probably start with Ten Stories
youtube
movies and tv:
-most of my favorite movies are indie slice-of-life dramas about someone slowly having a mental breakdown. Magnolia is the epitome of this. also: most surprising twist in a movie you will ever see.
-all of Charlie Kaufman's movies are fucking weird. Synecdoche New York, Being John Malkovich, and Adaptation are among the weirdest.
-well-known, but stil weird and good: Donnie Darko
-my favorite lesser-known filmmaker is Mike Mills. his movies are Thumbsucker, Beginners, and 20th Century Women (i think he has a newer one as well) and all are excellent if you like slow, poignant indie dramas as much as I do
-a pair of Amazon shows that I don't think get enough attention: I Love Dick and Patriot.
-Venture Bros is the best animated television show of all time, and not enough people know about it. you gotta stick through the first couple seasons but I promise it's worth it.
-Fargo (the show, not the movie) isn't really obscure but it is really good. every season is a different set of characters and set in a different time period, but they're all interconnected. mostly centered on organized crime and the interpersonal shenanigans that come with that. it really seems like tumblr would be more into this show. season 2 and season 4 are the best ones, but you can watch any of them in any order.
podcasts:
I could recommend podcasts literally all day but here are some of the weirdest ones:
-Love + Radio: interviews with some of the most interesting, strange and controversial subjects. the editing is also wonderfully bizarre. I recommend the episode
-Appearances is another one of those things which is a semi-fictionalized retelling. it's about a woman trying to find the right partner to have a baby with while also dredging through the family drama of her past. beautiful and emotional.
-the Memory Palace: short vignettes about history. will make you feel serene and deeply connected to your fellow humans
-the Ballad of Billy Balls: part memoir, part mystery(that actually has a satisfying conclusion!) iO Tillet Wright tries to find the body of his mom's first love who was murdered by the police. incredibly touching and wonderfully produced.
-all of Jamie Loftus' podcasts: My Year in Mensa, Aack Cast, Lolita Podcast, Ghost Church. (she also had a book come out recently, Raw Dog, which I haven't read yet but looks amazing)
video essay(ists):
-along with the more well-known video essayists like Contrapoints and Defunctland, I also gotta shout out CJ the X, who makes excellently researched and chaotic videos about a variety of topics. one of my favorites: https://youtu.be/JuKbDpPAooE
unfortunately I'm not a huge video gamer--I mostly just play pokemon ROM hacks on my phone, which I guess is weird--so I don't have many recommendations on that front. (but also everyone should play Wingspan.)
however, Twine is a wonderful (free!) program you can use to make html games and I know that itch.io hosts a lot of them. so if you're interesting in making games, definitely play around with that.
well. this is way long and maybe I should have made it into a few separate posts. let me know if you have trouble accessing any of this stuff. and tell me if you check any of it out! I want to talk about all of it! and thanks for sending this ask, I love to write about all the weird brilliant things that I like :)

hello! i've been seeing soo much of my favorite artists get into redacted audio and i just wanted to know where can i start listening or what character should be a good start for me to get into redacted?? i've been wanting to listen to him but idk where to start! thank u 😊
Hello friend! I've answered this before but I'll go ahead and do it again since my answer has changed just a little teeny tiny bit
I would recommend Freelancer Season 1 to start! There are a lot of posts on this website about everyone's recommendations, but I'd say probably Freelancer Season 1 because the main listener character is also just as new to the rest of the shared universe as a new audience member, and gets the basics of the mechanics explained pretty well.
Normally I'd also recommend Sovereign State Season 1 as a good starter too, but its finale episode(s) need a lot of context to really have the proper impact...
Unless of course you have plenty of time and don't mind a lot of information being dumped on you. In which case I recommend grabbing the "Everything" playlist! It's every narrative video he's made in the order of release, so the exposition is in the order that he gave it in. Which, honestly, can be very helpful, because watching things out of order can be confusing because some information will be casually mentioned like it's common knowledge while you're sitting there confused like "Wat?!" because that exposition was in a different series
But if the "Everything" playlist seems too long and daunting, character playlists for David, Asher, Milo, and Vincent (before the Inversion series) are a little easier to digest.
Also an important thing to note: everything is connected. Even if you don't think a certain storyline is connected to the rest of the universe for [reasons] when you first listen to it, I guarantee you, it's connected in some way.
Redacted also has a website with an official timeline but I don't recommend reading it until you've watched most (if not all) of the videos because reading a timeline is honestly more overwhelming and a lot less fun and interesting than just listening to the videos. Go to the timeline afterward for specific dates if you need them.
Also bear in mind that he deals with some heavy subjects sometimes and applicable content warnings will always be in the YouTube video description. If you're more sensitive to certain subjects, read the descriptions and make a judgment call from there. If you can handle pretty much anything, that's more than fine, but if not, this is your friendly advice from me to keep an eye on the video descriptions for any subjects you'd rather not hear about
I love the Imperium AU and Inversion but they can be too dark for some people and that's okay
I'm not trying to scare you off, I promise. I love this channel and its stories dearly and could not recommend his storytelling more highly. I just want you to be aware that heavy subjects can pop up
Redacted is an adult and writes stories mostly about adults, so mature topics and "spice" (as a euphemism) will pop up alongside the aforementioned "heavy" subjects
Another thing: trust in Redacted's storytelling. If something seems "bad," it is most definitely there to serve a greater purpose later down the line. Trust that he's going to service his story and the things that you may not like will lead to something so satisfying when its time comes
Anyway. TL;DR, start with either the "Everything" playlist and go in order of release for the "true experience" of having a seemingly random barrage of characters thrown your way, or start with Freelancer Season 1 for a decent rundown of the universe's rules and mechanics and magic system
Don't do what I did. Which was hop around randomly, cherry picking whomever's "title" seemed the most interesting at the time until I'd heard the whole channel and had to go relisten to things in some semblance of the right order in order to figure out wtf was going on. I ended up watching Elliott's playlist as the first playlist I watched and let me tell you, I was confused as hell. Don't do that. Freelancer Season 1, and the "Everything" playlist are my top recommendations for understanding the lore in the order it was released so you need fewer context clues on wtf is going on

As someone who hasn’t rlly played a BL game b4 do u think I’d still enjoy NTY
HMMM I’ve only played two routes out of four, so my advice is definitely incomplete!
That said… I think NTY is worth a read because it’s an interesting mystery/crime story and has really good characters!
However, it does contain standard bad yaoi conventions (like dubious consent/noncon) as well as general sexual wackiness, which may be uncomfortable, especially for those unaccustomed to BL as a genre. The protagonist likes to grope his male coworkers for fun, for example. But from the routes I’ve played, if you’re used to general yaoi fandom bullshit, you can probably handle it… I think!? The game is from 2013, which should give you a sense of how things are.
The other thing is that, as mentioned above, NTY is also a mystery/crime game, so it includes rather real-feeling dark content including drugs, violence, child abuse, and incest (not with the love interests)… off the top of my head.
Overall, I really like it! The characters are really a strong point and I feel that they’re written in a pretty realistic way. For example, because the love interests are all straight, not all of the routes end up in “romance”. (Though you do get to fuck. Multiple times even!) I think if you enjoy that sort of “more than friends, not quite lovers” relationship, you’ll enjoy NTY. The way the overarching plot is revealed was very gripping to me as well. You definitely need multiple playthroughs to understand the whole thing!
I think if you can handle yaoi bullshit and darker themes, you should definitely give it a try 🥰 If you’re not sure but still want to dip your toe in, I’d recommend “Lkyt.”, which is the third game from the same company! It is much more sombre in tone and has more explicit violence and gore (with visuals, though you can censor them via the settings), but importantly…! None of the noncon…! It also feels less dark somehow because it has a more fantastical setting. It’s also much shorter and simpler in gameplay!
I hope this advice helps a little anon!!! :D

i am about to go spend 4 mandatory days with my family so i went back through to make sure i didn't miss your book recommendation post. it looks like you haven't made it yet and NO RUSH and also NO PRESSURE but i AM looking forward to it and invested. thank u for your time
Expediting this list FOR YOU, SHANNON ❤️
These are unranked btw. A single tier that is "this was good so you should read it"
Even Though I Knew the End by CL Polk - this novella feels almost like it was cooked up in a lab specifically to appeal to me. I love 40s noir, I love urban fantasy, I love sapphic romance. This book delivers on all fronts. It follows a freelance magician as she investigates a series of brutal supernatural murders that have been plaguing Chicago. If she can find out who's behind the killings she can save lives - including her own. Aside from the great noir detective angle and the fun magic system, there's a beautiful romance at the core. If you read this and you like it, you should definitely also check out P Djeli Clark's Dead Djinn series of books for more stories in a similar vein.
Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky - another novella! This one's not gay, but it's got a great science fantasy premise. At what point is technology indistinguishable from magic? How much difference does it make? This story is a dual narrative - half of it follows the daughter of a royal so low down the succession chain that she's functionally useless embarking on a half mad quest to track down the ancient wizard of folk legends and secure his help in protecting her family's lands against attacks by monsters. The other half follows an anthropologist, the lone survivor of a research team dispatched to a backwater planet centuries ago, struggling to find a sense of purpose in his lonely existence, while the terms of his placement on the planet forbid him from engaging in the lives of the civilization he was sent to observe. Very fun and a brisk read.
Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield - this one's quite different in tone. It's a quiet, contemplative romantic drama about a married couple who planned to spend their whole lives together, slipping away from each other after a traumatic event. It's also a cosmic horror novel about the ocean - its secrets, its power, its ability to transform. Beautifully written but slow paced - if reading about the minutae of the relationship between two British lesbians and also Lovecraftian body horror both hold equal appeal to you as subject matter, it's a book you'll adore.
Echo by Thomas Olde Heuvelt - speaking of relationship issues! This one's gay and haunted in the other direction. It follows a couple after one of them suffers a horrible accident while mountain climbing and comes back different. I'm not sure how much you like scary books, Shannon - I'd say this one is scarier than Our Wives, but not like super terrifying. It's got some amazing ideas though - genuinely the most original haunting/possession story I've read in years.
The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman - this was SO much fun. I've struggled reading fantasy this year - I keep starting books and not finishing them. This is the title that finally broke my fantasy slump. It's easy to read, fast paced and not overly dense, with an interesting world and lore that's constantly fleshed out throughout the whole run of the book. Also, god, it was so refreshing to read a sword and sorcery fantasy book with wizards and goblins and shit and just have it be full of women? And the author isn't weird about it? It's narrated by a male character in the vein of the classic Irish trickster hero, but the supporting cast are mostly women. A scrappy apprentice witch, a stoic raven knight with magic tattoos, a magic assassin, a witch queen in exile who has to be restored to the thrown that was stolen from her - it's all happening! Honestly adored this book. Can't wait for the next entries in the series.
Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner - okay this is not gonna be for everyone. It's also the only straight up romance on the list - in my defense, I haven't read many this year. This is a book about what if you were a college senior moping about on your school's family weekend and you hook up with a hot older chick about it and then the next morning you find out your one night stand is actually your best friend's mom. No wait, keep reading! I actually found this book to have way less of the conflict you'd expect - there was some of the obvious friction, the conflict of interest, the secrecy demanded by the premise but the romance itself was very kind, sweet, generous, once it got going. This one is also very smutty. If a romance sounds appealing but this premise is a no-go, you might want to check out Meryl Wilsner's other book Something To Talk About! I'm very picky with romance, but they're two for two with me.
Good luck! Happy reading!

Genuine question, should I watch the Empires SMP? It seems fun and interesting by the posts you reblog/write, but I don't follow anyone who's part of it so Idk. I wouldn't even know where to start or who to watch
i WISH i had enough knowledge to help you out here but alas i only watch joel. but regardless i would say YES for sure. it's definitely more story-heavy than hermitcraft (unless u watch joel LOL), but even if that isn't really ur thing pretty much everyone on this server is an amazing builder and theyre all really good friends so you get a lot of fun shenanigans n pranks as well ^_^
as for how to get into it, if ur familiar at all with any of the creators i would start with them, it doesn't really matter who. you don't need to know ANYTHING about season 1 either. joel's pov is hilarious and also very fun and i would genuinely 100% recommend it to anyone. it's very similar to hermitcraft in that there's a good balance of really amazing builds and also lots of messing around with friends (plus u get to see joel attempting """lore""" for the first time in his entire career which is very entertaining and a little bit pathetic tbh).
from what i've heard pixlriffs is also doing something cool this season where instead of playing a character he's acting as the Keeper of Lore and basically building stuff that ties the world together and gives it history. i do have plans to maybe start watching fwhip and lizzie if i have time at some point as well just bc i like them
