Hello all! For the Horizon Day of Service I decided to help out my native pollinators and maybe even some monarch butterflies! The solitary bees that frequent my garden LOVED my basil flowers when they went to flower last year, so I allowed all my basil to go to flower a bit early this year to help them out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two stacked planters filled with plants. The first is a green planter with calendulas, peppers, dwarf stock flowers, lanceleaf coreopsis, johnny jump ups, sweet alyssum, and basil plants which have gone to flower. The second is a tan planter with more flowering basil, marigolds, chamomile, squash, and a small melon vine. /end ID]
Then I planted even MORE basil so that when my first wave of flowers dies off, the bees have some more!
Tumblr media
[ID: three basil plants in a white pot. Each plant is about 5 inches tall. They have not flowered yet. /end ID]
I’ve been making a valiant struggle against the grass around where I planted the milkweed, but that darn stuff sure is tenacious! Hopefully they get a bit bigger soon, and return next year!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: two pictures of small milkweed plants, about 6 inches tall each. A hand is gently holding both plants, helping them to stand out against an army of grass trying to strangle them /end ID]
Finally, the bees really liked my nasturtiums in the late fall last year, so I’m starting some more sprouts to plant! Only one has sprouted so far, but I can see the others disturbing the soil! They should sprout soon.
Tumblr media
[ID: a small nasturtium plant in a seedling tray, an inch tall. It has two leaves, and a white tag labeling it as “regular nasturtium” stuck into the soil near it. It is very cute. /end ID]

crimson river [tmq prequel]
the origins of Talitha’s ship. it’s long, so most of it is under a cut <3
#
#
Talitha lifts the violin to her chin, and puts the bow to the strings. The music comes to her, easy as breathing; the melodies of childhood filling the clearing. She closes her eyes and lets the notes envelop her in sound. A memory rises, following the sound of the music. She’s taken back to when she first learned the song; calloused hand wrapping around hers, drawing the bow across the violin; chest pressed against her back.
The chest rumbles, and it’s Lyr’s voice that touches her ears; his breath ghosting across her skin in phantom memory.
He sings; pleasant baritone. Talitha doesn’t know the meaning the words he sings—she never asked, content to let the language stay a pleasant mystery. And as he sings, a glow flits on the edges of her vision. The pure, raw, unfiltered magic of Eldora becomes visible; shining bright under the hum of his voice and the melody of her violin. It dances and flickers like a thousand fireflies; like firelight; like glittering stars.
At fourteen, it’s the most beautiful thing she’s ever seen—even now, there is no sight that could ever compare to that one; the courtyard lighting up at midnight, to the tune of a song she could never understand.
She fell in love that night—with magic, with the unknown, with music… and maybe even with her best friend.
The song ends, and she opens her eyes.
Golden green eyes, wide and luminous, bore into her own—only inches from her face. Talitha cannot bring herself to be surprised. She smiles.
“Hello, Cala.” She doesn’t know where the name comes from—doesn’t know how she knows the name at all.
But the nymph, the same nymph who gave her the violin in the first place, smiles back; revealing pointed teeth. “Hello, pirate.”
“Why did you call me here?”
“You want to get off this island. And I and my sisters would like you to leave,” Cala said easily. But Talitha didn’t get the impression that she meant it maliciously. They were invaders, and they had not been invited. More than that, Talitha and her crew could not truly survive out here, cut off from the rest of the world. (And, Talitha thought, Lynette deserved better.)
“What do I have to do?”
Cala smiled. She gestures to the violin in Talitha’s arms. “You have all the tools you need. Music—and your voice. You have the memories. Think of Lyr, and the magic he showed you. The magic he taught you, intentionally or not.”
“Majaria is a Slaeyr’s magic,” Talitha protested. “It’s—I’m not… I’m not a Slaeyr.”
Cala scoffed. “The Slaeyrs appearance brought it into the world, but just as they can be born to any race—so too can any race use that magic. Not as powerfully… in most cases.” Cala gave her a pointed look, a strand of bark-brow hair falling into her eyes. “You, my dear, have the ability. So use it.”
“I don’t—I don’t know how.”
“Yes. You do.” Cala reached out and touched her cheek. “Open your eyes… and sing.” Cala’s hand, green-skinned, slides from her cheek and presses against her forehead. She pushes, and Talitha falls backward; her mouth opening before she sits bolt upright.
For a moment she sits there, staring into the dying embers of a campfire. She can hear Lark snoring, and Ana muttering in her sleep. The ocean laps at the shore, and the woods are full of sounds. The chirp of frogs; the hum of insects; the calls of birds. But… as she sits there, staring into the ashes, she hears… something else. A song. A melody, that she… had long forgotten. She remembers, playing it with her sister. Lynette on the harp, Talitha on the violin. Shrouded in peace. Talitha had never been happier, growing up, than she was in the music room with her sister.
Talitha sits up. She wipes the sand from her body and steps over her sleeping crewmates. Falon has fallen asleep on watch, head ducked into his chest and loud snores coming from him. Tomorrow, she might berate him about it. For now…
She has to see if her dream spoke the truth.
She stepped into the woods, pushing aside hanging vines and stray branches. The path is overgrown. Roots grow in her way; some arching high off the ground and others just protruding, hidden by moss and clover. Talitha walks steadily. The branches grow thicker; the foliage blocks out the light of the moon and stars. She summons a dim, twinkling magelight. Around her, she can feel eyes boring into her. The branches shake, and the leaves quiver as creatures race through them. Birds take off, their wings fluttering and their cries piercing the air.
Goosebumps raise on Talitha’s arms, and her heart races in her chest. But she continues on; determined.
The trees begin to grow closer together, their branches tangling. Talitha can no longer tell which tree the roots under her feet come from. Perhaps they are but sprouts; roots themselves, springing from a much larger tree.
She ducks beneath arched roots, and climbs over others. Bushes reach out with prickly branches to tear at her clothes and skin. They’re minor cuts and rips, and she can live with them. So she ignores them. It would be unwise to ruin or harm any of this forest—especially when she was so far from the beach.
Talitha pushes more vines from her view, and immediately finds herself squinting in the moonlight. She steps into the grove. The ground is covered in moss and clover, and in the center of the clearing is a massive tree. Talitha swallows in its presence. This is no ordinary plant. This is a tree descended from the World Tree—Talitha would bet her ship on it.
Or, well. She would if she had one.
Her eyes slide over the grove. Hanging lights float in the air. Some of them are fireflies. But others—they look like wisps. Or fairylights. Flowers grow; their perfume thick and heavy in the air. The forest is concealed by thick, hanging vines. The area is unnaturally still; the moon beaming above, and the stars glittering mysteriously. Talitha swallows. She keeps walking forward, waiting for the sensation that something is wrong to creep into her gut.
It never comes.
Halfway across the grove, she spots it. Sitting innocuously on one of the thick roots of the tree… it’s the violin from her dreams. Grey wood, the same color as the tree bark, with green patches as if moss was growing on it. A perfectly from bow sits beside it, and so too does a tiny seed. Talitha walks over, and very carefully picks them up.
It feels right in her hands. As if it was made just for her. She swallows. She reaches out, with the hand holding the bow, and touches it to the tree root. “Thank you,” she breathes.
A breeze blows across her skin. The trees whisper—or so it sounds, as their leaves rustle against one another. Talitha turns and leaves, heart in her throat. She pauses, once, at the threshold, to look over her shoulder. She swears that, across the clearing and to the left, she can see the faint, ghostly outline of Calla, the nymph from her dream.
#
#
Back on the beach, Talitha walks away from the campsite. She finds a far away spot, and plants her feet into the sand. She stares into the trees. After having traversed the grounds, the forest should seem less foreboding… but it doesn’t. Something about the shadows lurking between the trees sends her heart racing and her stomach twisting nervously.
There is something… wild, and alive about this place.
Calla was right. She needs to leave. They all do. This is not a place that they are welcome. Not now—perhaps not ever. There is a reason it was hidden in the middle of the Dead Sea.
Talitha plants the seed beneath the sand, and stands. She exhales.
She closes her eyes, and she pictures the Captive Queen. And then—she pictures every change that she would make. She breathes in and out, steady and deep. Her heartbeat slows, and the tension drains from her body. The ship builds in her mind. She sees the hull, grey and barklike in texture; like the violin she holds in her hands. There are patches of moss. She sees the sails, made of fibrous material, made from the plants of the forest. She sees the anchor, hewn from stone. It is bereft of weaponry—but that, she can buy. Somehow.
She sees the rooms. The bunks. She sees the hold, and the brig. She sees the masthead—fashioned to look like Calla. But she also sees intangible things. The magical layers of protection, hewn into its surface. The way it’s tied to her, the way it will respond to her every thought. This is not something she desires, but it is something that will happen, because that is the nature of the magic.
She sees how deep her influence goes—and watches as, in her mind’s eye, the ships sails not just the sea but through the sky, like the airships of home.
Talitha opens her eyes; takes a breath; and begins to play. The melody is a haunting refrain, sliding between hopeful, and mournful. Her feet trace patterns in the sand, as she whirls and dances in place, her movements copying the rise and fall of the tides; the ever-shifting motion of the ocean.
The trees begin to sway in an unnatural breeze. The sand lifts from the ground in whirls. Talitha’s clothes begin to flap. Her heartrate picks up again. Her blood flows faster; her fingertips and feet growing warm. The trees begin to creak and groan, an ominous sound, but to Talitha it is of no consequence. Words form on her tongue, her native language springs to her lips, and she sings. What words she says she does not know but it does not matter, for her intentions are clear in her mind. And she can feel the island itself. Its age, and its power—and its willingness to help, if only to make her leave.
Their roots of the seed begin to creep out and into the sand. They rise from the ground and reach out towards the ocean. The skeleton of a ship begins to form, slowly and yet all at once. The rooms fill the gaps in the skeleton. Halls and ladders connect them, and then the hull forms to protect them. It gleams with golden runes. Some pulled from her—others, formed by the trees. They are in a runic language Talitha does not know and were she of clear mind, she would crave their knowledge.
But she isn’t, and so her mind piques in curiosity, but it is swallowed by the ebb and flow of the music, and the words forming on her lips.
The masts rise from the deck. Plant fibers grow, forming themselves into sails. Below deck and in her cabin, she can feel them transforming into mattresses, and blankets. They won’t be the most comfortable things—but they’ll do, until more can be bought. Stones rise from below the earth; precious metals with them. A chain weaves its way through the walls, and an anchor comes to rest at the side of her ship.
Ropes are woven of vines, connecting to the sails and forming riggings. The crows nest opens at the top.
The last thing to form is the figurehead. The rendition of Calla breaks through the hull, looking like a mermaid rising, chest first from the water. Though her coloring matches the ship—she is just how Talitha last saw her. Curly hair cascading down her shoulders; sweet, open face and calculating eyes; bare, curvy body with arms outstretched. Her legs do not form, and Talitha does not envision them.
The ship is finished. The wind slowly dies down, and Talitha sinks to her knees, the violin limp in her hands. She breathes heavily and harshly in the night air… but she doesn’t feel exhausted at all. She’s energized—her heart still racing and her blood still pounding.
Too much extra power. The thought floats to her mind. It takes an eternity to place the words. Her teacher, back in school. Sometimes people draw too much magic from another mage, or from Eldora, and it overloads them. She has to—she needs to get rid of it.
She struggles to her feet. She knows where to go.
She walks to the edge of the forest. The violin falls from her grasp and lands on the ground. She stumbles forward; splays her palms against a tree. She closes her eyes and reaches outward.
The trees—they’re an interconnected network. It all leads back to one tree… but not the one Talitha visited, in the center. The forest must be made up of multiple interconnected root systems. She files the thought away for later, and instead—she focuses on pushing out. She channels that extra magic into the tree, and piles with it her gratitude.
Thank you, she repeats. Over and over again, until she sinks to the ground, palms scraping against the rough bark. Her trembling subsides. Her heart slows down. Her blood stops pounding in her ears.
She can breathe again.

An introduction on why I made this blog and how I chose the name.
I am a quiet artist that grew up legitimately starving beneath the poverty line as a child in the early to mid 2000s. We had only the food given to us by friends who knew and the only lunch I had through the week was the cheapest pbj and carton of milk that was refrozen an innumerable amount of times. Over the weekends I foraged in the woods on the edge of our rental and the only safe plants I knew at the time were oranges and hibiscus. In the midwest I can remember having probably a 4ft by 8ft plot on our patio, and every space we could reclaim without lifting too many stones to grow strawberries, sunflowers, tomatoes, and plenty of herbs. I can't remember the rest of that garden. When we moved to the south it all withered away in the sand soil, and my parents didn't know where to begin on finding a solution, or if there even was one. Besides, we were renting, and I was too young to understand the dominoes which kept falling in the direction of dependence on stores or pantries for food. I remember that for so long none of the seeds I planted grew.
Ever since I can remember I wanted to be an artist, but I also wanted to live in a hut in the woods like the skunks do, living off of the land and growing my own food. I wanted to live with the animals, collect bones and food, make art in my forested garden, dry herbs, harvest rainwater, and be "away" from things. In a way I got those things I dreamed of, just not the way I had expected or when I had expected them. We harvested rainwater to filter for our household tasks, foraged or bartered favors for food, and I was able to make friends with people who also dabbled in gardening and foraging. This gets me into my next explanation: the blog name.
Back when we were in high school, I worked with some friends of mine to organize a local art show. It was for our group and the old woman hosting us (another local artist and friend of ours) kicked us out and took our credit, took our name, and turned it into her side money. The blog name is a reclamation of what is collectively ours, and I want to share it with you years later.
Now as an adult, my dream has slightly changed since I've met the love of my life. My little single hut dream is more of a vibe than a literal hut, but I still want a garden full of native plants, trees, and food, and I want to make art in that space. I've experimented plenty with seed starting, soil amendments, composting and vermiculture, basic aquaponics, foraging, and even insect farming, and just keep adapting my growing choices and knowledge to containers in an urban setting, and it's been filled with plenty of mistakes and roadblocks while I relearn what it is the earth tells me to do.
I'm sharing this all because I probably notoriously overshare, but I also want people from similar backgrounds or less to know that they can do this too.
Everything I currently grow is just along the frontside of a screened in porch, and in just this year alone I've had 5 successful avocado trees, 2 mango trees, 6 jalapeño bushes just starting to fruit, 9 tomato plants, and 5 different herbs for cooking/tea/medicine during this difficult growing season. I've had plenty of failures too from the excessive heat and rain, so if you fail too just try to learn from it and adjust, be patient with it, don't give up.
Hang out with me and work toward your own gardening goals!

Backyard wildflowers 1/?
(A series of posts on wildflowers and volunteers in my backyard. I wanna share my flower and plant pics. My parents have been letting the garden go more this past year so I have lots of pics of the "weeds". I fought off so many mosquitos to take these.)
One of my favorite times of the year is now, when summer is on its way out and fall is scooching in. I love the weather and I love GOLDENROD!
Tumblr media
A member of the aster family, goldenrod is a huge variety of plants spanning over 100 species, most native to North America. They can be seen brightening fields, roadsides, and open woods in late summer to the first frost, depending on species and hardiness zone. Most species don't like to be disturbed much, so anywhere off the side is Free Realestate™️. They're often seen as a weed and blamed for seasonal allergies, but they are insect-pollinated as seen above, not air-pollinated - their pollen doesn't cause congestion or itchy eyes (unless you shove your face directly into the flowers). If you're interested in insects, watching over some goldenrod is sure to give you a nice variety of native pollinators to admire. You can literally watch pollen sacs fill up in bright yellow. Our patches often host bumblebees and other small native bees. Butterflies, too.
That being said, goldenrod doesn't play nice with others. It's an aggressive perrenial and spreads quickly and efficiently, using both aerial seeds and rhizomes to take over flowerbeds. It can be considered an invasive species if introduced to another ecosystem. Some species are less aggressive, but they're less likely to be the volunteers springing up on your property or by the railroads. Ime, it does better with other aggressive native plants. The phlox and black-eyed susans in our yard balance them fairly well. If you don't want them in yours, pull em up sooner rather than later. They're harder to uproot the older they get.
Scientific name: Solidago spp.
Common names: Aaron's rod, woundwort, goldruthe, goldenrod
Height: 2 - 6.5 feet (depending on species)
Uses: can be used to make pretty yellow dye, as well as herbal tea. The leaves of all species of goldenrod are edible, and can be used medicinally (WITH CAUTION). They are diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and can be found in a pill form (more reliable dosage and guaranteed food grade, so no worries about pesticides or roadside pollution) as an herbal supplement. Doctors are still studying it, and there is "insufficient data on its effectiveness". Please remember that even if a plant is "all natural", that doesn't mean it won't have side effects or that it won't negatively interact with other meds or herbal treatments. Even stuff like Tylenol. Consult a doctor or licensed herbalist who knows your medical history. I've never eaten ours cuz I already pee a lot (they're diuretic, remember), our leaves often have an unknown fungus on them, and I live in Chicago so contamination with neighbors' pesticides and stuff is possible.
Personal Associations: (YMMV) drawing things to you, liminality, joy, confidence, warmth, mutual support, abundance, meeting goals through more than one way/path, wishes (native alternative to dandelion seeds), determination/perseverance, if you want a spell to lodge its roots deep and grab hold hard and fast it's a good plant to recruit. This may make it harder to undo, tho. Goldenrod's worked with magic users and herbalists for a long time, so it tends to be easier to approach and work with.
Warning: MAKE SURE a plant is truly edible and you aren't allergic to it before harvesting. Goldenrod has DEADLY look-alikes. (I may do a post on em, tho I haven't found any near my house). DONT DIE. Harvest Responsibly, most golden rod are native species. Google how to do that.
Now that that's done:
Look at these fuckers
Tumblr media
These babes grow over 6ft tall. Called Solidago gigantea for a fuckin reason. (Ft. Some black eyed susans and a little pink phlox hiding back there). They prefer full sun
Tumblr media
Look how tiny those compound flowers are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serrated 3-veined alternating leaves, no branching stem, leaves tend to get slightly bigger further down the stem, no leaves at the base. Diameter of stem is almost an inch. Somewhat woody. Deep roots.
Tumblr media
The height on this dude is close to 5ft, but the way the flowers cluster and arc on it seems different from the S. gigantea species. Not sure, but possibly S. canadensis? Goldenrods make hybrids easily due to the large variety, so taxonomy is difficult. Local field guides can help. Couldn't get a closer look cuz the wild blackberry was stAbBIng mE.
Tumblr media
No idea what these pointy pyramid/mountain kids are either. Bugs like em tho. Its not a fluke, there's multiple of them in the more shady area of the yard. Seems to be comfy in partial shade. No leaf serration, single vein, alternating growth with leaf rosettes, couldn't see the base. I wanna say 4-5 ft tall?

Your thoughts on freaky Australian wildlife+sealife?
YES I LOVE IT.
I love it ALLLLLL.
Actually if you could see my bookshelves, there are so many like ‘frogs of Australia’ ‘mammals of Australia’ ‘birds of Australia’ ‘reptiles of Australia’ ‘insects of Australia’ ‘orchids of Australia’ etc. books. My house is basically a tiny Australian museum library when it comes to wildlife. I recently bought a book just on Australian Magpies by the CSIRO. It’s just like 150 pages on magpies. I’m SO HAPPY.
As for the things that can kill us, it’s funny you know, because all Australians seem to have this weird unspoken code to immediately tell strangers of all of the worst or freakiest stories we’ve ever had. Like ‘oh remember when we had that friend WHO DIED FROM A SNAKE IN THEIR BED’ or ‘REMEMBER WHEN we had that family member who got bitten by a redback and nearly DIED’ etc. Or ‘my friend got bitten by a shark’ etc. Everyone has those stories.
And it seems most Australians find strangers and immediately start talking about them. Idk what it is. Maybe we’re just that kid that really wants other people to find us cool? So we start collectively talking about really awful things while the other kids all back away with their hands up like ‘I...didn’t come here for this.’
I have those stories too. I’ve definitely been part of this bizarre trend. It’s like when you meet a Canadian and they just can’t resist telling you about their bear or raccoon or mountain lion encounters and then when you’re exclaiming in horror at bears, or protecting your bins, or how huge moose are or whatever, they then go ‘but haha it’s not like that all the time and we’re all used to it.’
The reality is that like...yes there are risks - as with any country (I’d prefer not to live in places where the main fear is guns and not fatal spiders though), but encountering them is minimal and you’re raised knowing the kinds of things to protect yourself without thinking about it. You shake your boots out before putting them not because you’re thinking ‘I’m gonna get bitten and I’m gonna die’ but because that’s just what you do. You stay on the path while bushwalking not because you think ‘shit there’s venomous snakes out there that could kill me in 1 hour with a bite’ but because that’s just what you do. It’s all very mundane and normal, and the world is built around that being easy to cooperate with.
Of course when you explain why we do these things to tourists, then they might start thinking ‘shit things are going to kill me.’ The irony is that if you just do those things - stay on the path, shake your boots out, and a few other things - well, no actually, you’re going to be fine. And if you’re staying in suburbia or the city, you’re going to be really fine.
I love our freaky wildlife. I love that we have birds (cassowaries), seashells (cone shells) and octopus (blue-ringed octopus) that are all lethal. I love that we have the weedy and leafy sea-dragons (not lethal, but weird), and like, many other strange things happening here. I love that we have trees that need to be smoked or set on fire to flower or fruit or seed, which means if you’re buying native plants for your garden, you need to check the label to make sure they don’t need ‘smoke germination’ or ‘smoking to assist with flowering’ lol. I love that we have lots of marsupials, a golden marsupial mole that lives in the sand and is blind etc. I love that we have antechinus that mate so violently they can both expect to die from the process (like what???), or our beautiful ant-eating numbats. I love that our swans are black. I love that we have whales migrating along the coast and bottlenose dolphins everywhere and incredible sea-life.
Actually back in the day I desperately wanted to be some kind of zoologist. I didn’t have the maths requirement (alas, I am not smart enough), and I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life studying Australian animals (and ecosystems, and geography, and flora). Now I still study it, I just didn’t go to university for it. I’m involved in a few groups that focus on conservation, and can identify local birds by song, local plants by sight and try not to be an obnoxious little shit about it.
And yeah, I’ve looked a lot into the deadly animals too. They’re badass! :D I actually mostly just post memes about them on Facebook, and on one of my Tumblrs under this tag.
tl;dr don’t ask me about this if you don’t want me to ramble excitedly about it because I am sadly one of those people where you’ll back away slowly with your hands like like ‘whaaaaat.’ (Also I love animals all over the world so...but anyway I can’t afford to buy all the ‘reptiles of Madagascar’ books that exist so anyway, I’m learning all the time! I mean I’ve drawn over 400 animals, and that’s what my job as a professional artist was - combining practical information with spiritual shit, so at any one time I am filled with absolutely useless trivia like: ‘did you know the collared aracari is an unusual toucan in that it roosts communally/soclally throughout the year?’ like, I’m sorry, lol. I usually just keep it to myself, but you opened the floodgates! *shoves everything back in*)
*
From the ‘your thoughts on’ meme.
