Fairytales in French cinema
Now, I am cheating a tad bit, because the 1972 "The Pied Piper" movie is actually British... But I will still include it in the list of French fairytale movies because the man behind this project was Jacques Demy - yes, the man behind the famous Peau d'Âne movie. And in many ways Demy's Pied Piper movie is meant to be the complete antithesis to his Donkeyskin - one was meant to recreate a psychedelic Disney movie with a lot of humor and naivety ; this one is a dark, drab, cynical piece about corruption, greed, religious intolerance and antisemitism.

THE WOLVES OF KROMER (1998) dir. Will Gould Once upon a time in the village of Kromer lived two young wolves. Cocksure Gabriel takes newcomer Seth under his paw and helps reconcile him to the vilification associated with being a wolf. They fall head-over-heels in puppy love, playing together around picturesque waterfalls, secluded woodlands, and moonlit lakes. One day a wicked old crone and her goofy sidekick kill their mistress, frame the wolves, and incite a torch-bearing mob of religious zealots to seek vengeance on the hapless pair. But who will live happily ever after? (link in title)
