Wood Engraving Wednesday
JOHN LAWRENCE
Once again we turn to the fanciful engravings of English illustrator and wood engraver John Lawrence (b. 1933), this time from a small (4.25" x 3") 1992 Folio Society edition of Robert Browning's version of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, printed at The Bath Press in Bath, England on Fabriano Ingres laid paper. The engravings themselves are only 3" x 2", but they are vivid and richly detailed.
John Lawrence, whose career spans nearly 70 years, is one of England's most-respected living wood engravers. He has illustrated well over 200 books and has taught his craft at the Brighton School of Art, Camberwell School of Art, and Cambridge School of Art from the 1960s to 2010. He has influenced generations of noted contemporary wood engravers, and was himself a student of Gertrude Hermes (view some wood engravings by Hermes we have posted).
Our copy of the Folio Society's Pied Piper is yet another donation from the estate of our late friend and colleague Dennis Bayuzick. The book was originally bound in full moire silk by Hunter and Foulis, but our copy was specially rebound in 2001 by English bookbinder Stephen Conway (see below).

Fairytales in French cinema
Now, I am cheating a tad bit, because the 1972 "The Pied Piper" movie is actually British... But I will still include it in the list of French fairytale movies because the man behind this project was Jacques Demy - yes, the man behind the famous Peau d'Âne movie. And in many ways Demy's Pied Piper movie is meant to be the complete antithesis to his Donkeyskin - one was meant to recreate a psychedelic Disney movie with a lot of humor and naivety ; this one is a dark, drab, cynical piece about corruption, greed, religious intolerance and antisemitism.

Since Ever After High is supposed to be a kids show the pied piper probably didn't kill the children of Hamelin and rather returned them (probably after the mayor gave him the money) so it must be terrible to live in Hamelin with the knowledge that there is going to be a huge rat infestation around every thirty years until the piper arrives and takes your children for some time until the mayor (who isn't supposed to be the nicest person) gives the piper their money

I really do find the concept of "The Piper" in tma really interesting; especially when considering the real life historical and mythological aspects. But what really gets me, is how the Piper in itself is warning.
In myth, The Piper led children away with his charismatic personality. In magnus we see him led Wilfred Owen astray, with his music and a pen. In reality, Wilfred Owen spoke out against political proganda and used is song/dance based imagery to paint the horrors of war for the world to see. In both fiction and fact, the thing he was describing led to his demise.
When looking at this, alot can be said about the Piper, we can talk about the literal metaphor, in which the drafting officers can be seen as the Piper, and the naive soldiers marching to their deaths become the dancing children following. Or we can look at it more abstractly, and understand that charismatic personalities are enough to led humanity to its end. Big parties and fact words can hide corruption political campaigns, big smiles and kind gestured can hide a monster. etc. So yes, the Piper is an interesting concept that represents political propganda movements vs media rebuttal.
But it's also the warning. When it plays its song, it shares with you the truth, it's up for you wether or not to listen and sing along.

What if the pied piper is one of the past incarnations of the control devil?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It just a weird theory I had but I can see the pied Piper having similarities with the control devil. The control devil had the ability to control animals and people just like how the Pied Piper control rats and children. The eyes of the control devil are yellow with multiple red rings within them alluding how the Pied Piper is often seen dressed in red and yellow in many stories. Control devil’s incarnations(including Makima and Nayuta) looks like humans in spite of not being human so it make sense for the pied piper to fit in this theory. If the pied piper is indeed one of the past incarnations of the control devil, the flute he play wasn’t really magic at all and was just a ploy for Everyone in Hamelin to hide his true nature as the control devil.

There he was, the one with many names. Some call him the "Rat-catcher of Hamelin" or "Der Rattenfänger von Hameln", others "The Pied Piper of Hamelin", or "The Pied Piper" for short. None of those names were his real name, however. It's not like he could tell them. Once he lured the children of Hamelin away from their hometown, taking revenge for not receiving the proper payment after luring the rats away the night before, the people of Hamelin cursed him, making him not only have a tail, but also unable to speak.
And now? He's a wanted criminal, roaming from town to town. He didn't choose to be this way, and didn't want to be, but he had to do what needed to be done to survive. Some children still claim to hear sorrowful flute music during the night, and know "The Pied Piper" is near, looking for a way to get back on the right path.
~~~
I've been wanting to make characters based on fairy tales, and started off with one of my personal favorites, the Pied Piper! Which fairy tale character should I cover next?
Searching for lost media: the Scary Tales documentary (2)
What is quite interesting is that we have actually small clips and extracts from the show itself! They were posted on the 3net Youtube channel eleven years ago - the channel called “3netTV”. More precisely we have the opening scene of two of the episodes.
The one of Hansel and Gretel / Cinderella:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQUB89rgjec
And the one of Pied Piper / Rapunzel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dx36QO5e0s
As you can see, these bear the mark of your typical Discovery Channel documentary. An alternate set of historian interviews and live-action reconstitutions of the subject - accompanied by occasional bad CGI and bad acting typical of such “documentary reconstitution scenes” of the 2000s (2011 being technically late 2000s). Though the sets are gorgeous, as you might have seen before, and will see below. 3netTV also has the opening scene of the “Little Red Riding Hood / Bluebeard” episode but it is... special. It is a 3D video. So if you do not have 3D glasses, it will just hurt your eyes.
However, what 3net also brings on Youtube is a scene from the reconstitution of the brothers Grimm fairytale “The Juniper Tree”. Mostly it is the famous scene of the boy being beheaded by his wicked stepmother. And... I have to admit I actually really like this scene. The documentary is all about digging the darkness, grim things and creepy details of fairytales, and this scene truly plays the darkness and borderline horror of the original tale - BUT it also deals with the lack of funds and means such a documentary has. It plays on what we do not see, on camera angles, lighting and the acting to convey the scene, and I really like how creepy the stepmother is depicted here, truly fitting the idea of a woman “possessed by the devil” as it is implied in the Grimm tale (or as we would put it today, a complete sociopath/psychopath). But you can see the scene by yourself there:
As I promised in my previous post, here is more of the set design pictures from Susannah Christine’s portfolio (right here: https://www.susannahchristinedesign.com/scary-tales.html )
Here are some of the “Hansel and Gretel” segment:
And a picture of what is either the Cinderella or Bluebeard segment:
There are many more pictures, but you can check by yourself over at the portfolio.
I think this is all worth posting for now. As I was notified in my previous post, the show was on Netflix for quite some times - and the Youtube comments under the videos confirmed the episodes could be seen on Netflix. However - like many other shows - it got removed one day, and so it cannot be looked at by Netflix anymore.
Does anyone know where this show can be seen today? Has anyone kept a copy of it somewhere? Are there links?
