you are the only person who i see posting about britannia and like…i know you are a big diviscait fan (and how can i blame you they are great!). however….i can’t be the only one super fascinated by aulus and cait, right? light and darkness…his obsession with her…the red string of fate…
Honestly, I hadn't really thought about that dynamic, mostly because I don't see Aulus as being particularly... human, if you get my drift. I can't deny that the final shot of Season 3 on the balcony in Rome was a real showstopper, though, and made me wonder what their relationship had become. Was Cait now married to Aulus? Was she his ward? Had she drunk the Cool-Aid and become a card-carrying cult member? Sadly, we may never know the answer to that as I have not seen any indication that there will be a fourth season...

I just learned that Britannia was cancelled, leaving us with the unresolved cliffhanger from season three.
I can’t say I’m particularly surprised since I’ve seen no pop culture engagement or indication that it was popular, but I am a little disappointed we won’t get to see it lay out.
It definitely wasn’t High Quality TV. The story meandered quite a bit in seasons two and three, and I’m still confused at the decision to lean so heavily into straight fantasy instead of the Historical Fiction they originally presented. Maybe it would have succeeded if they’d had a better idea of where they were going after the first season and were able to keep a tighter focus.
Still, I’m sorry to see it go.

got inspired from a recommendation post so decided to make a list of movies and shows with female-centric stories/female protagonists. since i can't post all of the genres in one post, i'll split it into multiple posts and y'all can save or add to the list as you wish. (disclaimer: i have watched most of these, but i only know about the existence of others. not every movie/show on these lists will be my recommendation. my recommendations will be beneath the list with reasons. also some of these are way better than others in terms of storytelling/performance--which is why i'll list my faves separately):

PERSONAL NOTES:
The Buccaneers is pretty feminist and wholesome, although oftentimes childish and full of Netflix cliches (even though it's an Apple TV original). It tries very hard to be Dickinson and Little Women but is a far cry away from Dickinson's edge and fierceness and Little Women's maturity and realism. It's more interested in appealing to Bridgerton audiences and its worse for it. But it's still full of the nice stuff, like strong female friendships and sisterhoods. Ooh, and lesbians! It's adamantly female-centric.
As for Little Women, I prefer the 90s version with Winona Ryder, but Greta did more justice to the source material than Louisa May Alcott herself in the new version.
The Book Thief and The World to Come are also tragedies, so you know. Ammonite, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Summerland and The Favourite are lesbians and bisexuals in their full glory, although all of them have vastly different tones (The Favourite is a dark comedy, I believe).
Speaking of The Favourite, Mary & George is like that but it's men vying for the affections of the king. Don't get it twisted though, Mary, George's mom, is the protagonist and primary mover of the show. It starts and ends with her. Also, more lesbianism! (I don't get tired of pointing that out.)
Belle is one of the few autobiographical historical fictions of a black woman. My dad and I love it. It, however, does not surpass The Woman King. The Woman King is like . . . one of the best historical movies on African women I've ever watched! Or just in general! It gives so much agency to African people in the colonial age and tells the story with nuance and perspective--it is a decolonized view on the slave trade that places West African people at the center. It's pretty intense and gory, though. Like it's dark, but like the performances are insanely good, and so is the story. Real life Wakanda and all that!

Since we're both as unwell about him as we are I consider you to be someone who knows a fair amount and what do you genuinely think the real James Fitzjames would feel if he saw the Terror's depiction of him? (As in watching the whole show)
HUH good question. first of all i think he'd be a little discombobulated by the very experience of watching a tv show but personally i choose to believe he'd at least be happy he was made into one of the main characters?? and that so many cool and sexy insane people are obsessed with him now <3
having said that. as much as i love show!fitzjames they did nerf him down A LOT. they robbed him of the joyous whimsy that was such a characteristic trait of the real jokester supreme fitzjames (show!fitzjames also has little to no relationship with his irl lieutenant buddies which. sad.)
we also know now that. most probably. he was actually fully english so i can only imagine he'd be Not Pleased about the cairn scene to say it lightly lmao imagine you and your adoptive family making significant efforts throughout your whole life to disguise the fact of your illegitimate birth and then 150 years later some people make a high rating show where they babygirlify you not only spill your secret to the millions of people watching (or secrets, plural, and make you call yourself a fake as a cherry on top lol) but they also get it wrong and make it Even Worse (from a victorian englishman's perspective) like stop guys he's already dead lmfao
having said that. he would have loved the britannia costume and the your nails are a terror line. i know he would.

Here's a quote from mike myers: "Austin Powers is everything I watched (on TV in the late sixties). Every molecule of British culture that came across the Atlantic was tasted and worshipped." austin's "bad teeth" were a reference to the bad british teeth stereotype, and apparantly the dental tech who made them (gary archer) got his inspiration by visiting and taking photos of expats who frequented a british style pub in california. hes an encapsulation of the groovy swinging 60s of 'Cool Britannia', and a tribute to the most stupid tropes of franchises like james bond. better than james bond really though.
Jade:
Jade is a badass through and through. She, as a child, was willing to traverse rainy woods with the baby protagonist to save him from certain doom. In present day, she uses kick-boxing, spears, and/or claws to fight monsters alongside the protagonist and his friends. She is willing to abandon her life as a princess until she finds out what darkness rules the world and is readily willing to face her trauma with kindness to keep others safe.
