Old fireplaces acquire new impact as the focus for fresh design ideas; new fireplaces lend a crisp sense of definition in clean-lined surroundings. Nevertheless, as many have discovered, it is particularly rewarding to restore an old fireplace to its former glory or install an appropriate design in an original setting.

Perfect bargain for the Gothic Victorian lover, this 1908 Queen Anne Victorian home in Shamokin, Pennsylvania is huge and only $350K. What potential, b/c it’s dark inside, ready to decorate, and is the former home of a wealthy coal baron.
The front porch overlooks a lovely garden.
That newel post is HUGE and look at the large light fixture on top. Love the bench seat- very convenient in an entrance hall.
They’re using this room as a dining area, but it has a large window seat and brick fireplace.
Stained glass and another window seat. Can you imagine putting your own touches to this?
Pocket doors with stained glass.
Carved built-in bench seats.
Another nice fireplace in this room, but look at what else it has.
The coal baron’s walk-in safe.
The kitchen update isn’t great, but the cabinets can be painted and there’s plenty space for open shelving.
Cozy breakfast room, also has a window seat.
This hallway has access to the 2nd fl. porch out front.
This home is huge- it has 8 bds.
4 full baths, but this one has a modern update that doesn’t match the style of the house.
This is a nice stained glass window for a bath, though. You can do it in a froggy theme.
This bath is much nicer- it has a great vintage feel.
It also has the original tile floors.
Look at the ceiling skylight.
This is a great vintage bath, too.
One of the bds. in the turret.
The 3rd fl. rooms have great angles and nooks.
Plus, there’s another safe up here.
Brick and stone construction.
The garden needs to be cut back a little, and there’s a porch on the 2nd fl. in the rear.
Love the rusty gothic fencing.
