I have some idea that sometimes publishers have swanky parties and invite their staff, best sellers and big authors. Is this real? Or did I see this in a movie lol
Oh, it's real. Though I'd say this was more of a thing back in the OLD days, pre-Pandemic, and a couple economic crises ago. :-/
The ones I have been to (and I have been to many) are usually for a reason, they aren't just random parties. Usually it's to promote new books to a specific audience, and they are often held during a conference or something like that so that a bulk of the people they are trying to reach will be there.
So like, for example, they used to do a lot of "Pre-Publication Tours" and take booksellers out to very fancy dinners with an author (and the publicist, and sometimes the editor). Or they might do something like a breakfast or dinner at ALA (for example) where they have several authors and a bunch of librarians, and each author gets to introduce themselves and talk about the book and spend some time at each table, and all the librarians get copies and they all have a chance to chit-chat over a nice meal.
When BookExpo/BEA used to be a thing (and actually even more so before that, when it was called the ABA), publishers would throw really grand parties and invite a number of famous authors with new projects coming, and invite a bunch of booksellers, and the party would be on a rooftop or some gorgeous venue. I went to one at ABC carpet where they took over a floor of the store and there were living flower walls. I went to one at Dylan's Candy Bar one year and there was an open bar where they had candy apple martinis and I got sick off em. I went to one IN the Library of Congress -- like the FANCY part -- and one in the main library in downtown LA at night, that was pretty spectacular.
I went to one on a rooftop in LA I believe and they gave us all t-shirts and we could go around to different tables and get autographs on the shirt from the authors, and Judy Blume was one of the authors, and I had a literal meltdown and cried on her and Libba Bray had to hold me up. (Judy Blume was very nice about it - she gave me a Kleenex and said, "don't worry, women your age always cry when they meet me" -- which was both reassuring and made me feel v basic lol).
I went to one on this like -- observation-area in a swank hotel in downtown NYC, and I was chit-chatting with John Green, and I had to go to the bathroom, so I went to the bathroom, and THE BATHROOM WAS ENTIRELY MADE OF GLASS INCLUDING THE FLOOR -- so to get to the toilet and pee you had to be like *hovering over empty space and anyone could see you???? I absolutely was not OK AT ALL and I think I just had to like, LEAVE to go to a real place with a real bathroom.
I still remember the ones my boss told me about -- one at PRINCE'S HOUSE where PRINCE PERFORMED, and one at the Playboy Mansion! -- I was not invited to those! *cryface*

I’ve been going back and watching/listening to SJM’s interviews and podcasts and noticed she doesn’t really talk about her mom like at all. She tells stories about her dad and grandmother and joshes family often but rarely ever mentions her mom lol I just thought that was very strange and was wondering if you know of any instances of her talking about her mom or siblings

第二十九屆（2021年1月26日─1月31日，維持線上書展與出版專業論壇）
2020年書展雖然停辦，但2021年書展被官方定為第二十九屆，不補上第二十八屆之缺號。
本屆書展原訂於2021年1月26日─1月31日��辦，但再次因COVID-19肺炎臺灣疫情與國際疫情嚴峻影響，1月20日文化部與台北書展基金會宣佈停辦實體書展，而線上書展及出版專業論壇則持續辦理。[96][97][98]
經過兩年停辦，由文化部主辦、台北書展基金會承辦「2021台北國際書展_精選主題館巡迴展」打破台北國際書展往例，首度以實體形式移師北部以外縣市，第一站台中場於2021年8月27日至9月12日「文化部文化資產園區」登場，第二站台南場於9月17日至10月3日「文創PLUS-臺南創意中心」，壓軸宜蘭場，則於10月8日至10月24日「中興文化創意園區」巡迴展出。

Today, it was announced that the book conferences #BookExpo (industry-facing) and #BookCon (reader-facing) are both no more. This is heart-breaking for me.
The privilege of going to BookExpo is what made me feel most immersed in the book community, and what helped me to feel truly connected to the publishing contacts and fellow bloggers who I only knew virtually. For three days, I would walk around New York City and feel intimately like I was part of this world. I met and grew closer to so many fellow writers and bloggers there—there are countless virtual friendships here and on twitter that became realer because we stood in line together, saved each other spots in line, went for drinks or coffee after a long day of hauling books.
I met N.K. Jemisin and Ann Leckie at BookExpo. I heard Leigh Bardugo, Charlie Jane Anders, and V.E. Schwab speak. I discovered books I may have never read otherwise, from Min Jin Lee's Pachinko to Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth to What if It's Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera to Salt Slow by Julia Armfield. I got books signed by icons and idols, from Philippa Gregory to Meg Cabot to Rosemary Wells to Jenny Slate. I snagged copies of highly anticipated reads early, from Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver to Téa Obreht's Inland to Morgan Parker's Who Put This Song On?
I was hoping that in 2022, BookExpo would resume. This is a huge loss for forging new bookish friendships and discovering new reads, for connecting reviewers and book writers to the larger publishing community.

js has no luck with managers. earn met js at bday party and disappeared. dew loved the boys, but they were unemployed. while doc was studying, sea could have gotten some solo work with the same makeup, but that didn't happen. it feels like no one knows what to do with them or where to put them. hey hello, you have a dermatologist with education and a clean face and a charming photogenic guy who can sell any product. what is your problem huh?
i apologize for answering these two messages together, i hope that's okay, you guys just both brought up the issue of jimmysea's managers and unfortunately that's not a subject i have much knowledge of ;;;;;; for example, i had no idea they changed four managers already!!!!! i mean i know GMMTV switch those often to better manage the schedules of the artists who are gonna work together in some way, but honestly four different managers in the span of three (?) years kinda seems A LOT to me
it's also kinda interesting to notice that in GMMTV there doesn't seem to be a separation between the roles of managers (usually have only one client, are not regulated, cannot arrange for casting calls, do handle media exposure and public relations) and of agents (have a roster of clients, are regulated, are legally permitted to negotiate contracts for work), which could definitely be an issue when it comes to promotions, but i have no idea how things work in the BL industry in particular so i don't want to say anything without the right informations
tho lbr we all know GMMTV treats jimmysea pretty poorly and criminally underuses them, so even the best manager/agent could only do so much if the production company itself doesn't give them opportunities.......
HOWEVER!!!!!! we have an event on october 4, the fan fest in japan on october 9, and now the bookexpo on october 22 to promote last twilight so at least that's SOMETHING. NOW THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO DO IS MANIFEST JIMMYSEA FOR GMMTV 2024!!!!!!!!!!

U.S. book publishing’s biggest trade show is being “retired,” show organizer ReedPop announced today. BookExpo, along with BookCon and Unbound, will not be held in 2021 after being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
ReedPop, the pop culture event–focused subdivision of Reed Exhibitions, said that, given the “continued uncertainty surrounding in-person events at this time,” the company has decided “that the best way forward is to retire the current iteration of events as they explore new ways to meet the community’s needs through a fusion of in-person and virtual events.”

Do your authors get lots of free books from the agency / their publisher? How common is it to get free ARCs and goodies? :)
They don't get "lots of free books" from the agency -- though if a client is a fan of another client, or just super-wants to read a certain book, and I happen to have an extra ARC or copy, and they ask me, I'm happy to send it to them.
(I usually get just a few physical ARCs, and sometimes none at all; I usually get between 5-10 physical copies of each finished book. I do use those copies for things myself, so while a lot of times I have extra, sometimes I don't.)
This goes for all the agents, too -- we'll often ask for books from one another, or if I have extra of something I think they/their kids will like, I'll send books to one of my colleagues or a client with a new baby or something like that.
Sometimes publishers/an editor will send a new author some books as like a 'welcome gift', or if an editor really thinks that an author might dig a certain book they worked on, they might send it along -- but that's sort of random.
Authors CAN start to get quite a lot of books once they start getting published -- publishers will send things the author might potentially blurb, or if they are a "big mouth" on social media or something they might get on some publicists mailing lists in the hopes that they'll post about the books -- and of course, if they are going to bookseller and librarian conferences, there are usually AMPLE opportunities to pick up piles of books and swag. (Of course, if they don't blurb, aren't on social media, and don't go to conferences -- probably they get much less!)
(Semi-related Sidebar: When I was a young bookseller with zero dollars, I would go to the now-defunct convention BEA/BookExpo -- though it was called ABA back in the day -- and I would get SO GIDDY at the freebies that I'd try and pick up LITERALLY EVERYTHING, pretty much breaking my back in the process -- I'd hide giant tote bags of free books under booths where friends were working and then pick them up at the end and stagger back to whatever hovel I was staying in. At this point in my life, when I go to ALA or something, I make it a point to pick up *as little as humanly possible* -- so I usually end up with just, like, a tote bag and maybe two books. MAYBE. Because my house is so full of books I already don't have time to read, I can't be adding more willy-nilly!)
