Dry - Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman

I drank a lot more water than I normally do while I was reading this book. I’m usually in a state of semi-dehydration because I’m not good at taking care of myself. Reading a book about a bunch of dehydrated people while dehydrated yourself is not advisable. I spent the whole time with a knot in my stomach, because I could feel how urgent it was that the characters find water.

I don’t think I would have survived this book. I don’t think I would have been what Kelton calls “sheep”, but I just don’t have the survival skills to stay alive in a wasteland, let alone a wasteland without readily available resources. Neal Shusterman is one of those authors that makes you intensely aware of how fragile the world can be.

I love Neal Shusterman. I went into this with high expectations. And I can safely say that although the Unwind dystology has a special place in my heart as the only series to make me actually want to vomit, and although I await breathlessly for the next book in the Arc of a Scythe series, Dry was an excellent read.

The thing about Shusterman is that all of his books make you uncomfortable. Dry was more subtle than the other books of his I’ve read, but it was a more insidious discomfort. I loved the alternate take on a zombie apocalypse - “water-zombies” is one of the coolest ideas I’ve read in a while, particularly because it’s such an astute observation on how similar thirsty, desperate people are to the monsters of our imagination.

This book was also different from some other “post-apocalyptic” books because the characters don’t deviate very far from where they started. A lot of novels like this start with the main character realizing that they have some kind of crazy skill that they hadn’t had to use up until now, and going off on an epic adventure of survival, mowing down obstacles. In Dry, there’s a negotiator, a survivor, a delinquent, a caregiver, and a child, all of whom have different skill sets but work together to make it to their goal. And they don’t become murderers or theives on the way, they stay true to their personalities, which I appreciated. There weren’t any needless deaths or gratuitous violence. The story was full of dread, but not the kind of tropes one normally sees in books about social crises.

This is especially important at the end of the book, because society does manage to recover. I don’t think it’s possible for characters who go on such a wild personal journey to realistically reintegrate themselves into any society, let alone one that is recovering from a massive drought and water shortage. People are still rationing water. It’s still a commodity. So you can’t drop someone who’s totally lost their humanity back into that environment and expect them to do well. But I guess that’s how we get sequels.

For a fictional novel, this book felt very real, mostly because it’s so rooted in a serious problem that our planet is facing right now. I have to wonder what Southern California will be like when the drought does come. I recommend Dry, especially to people concerned about climate change. This one’s for you.

So, this was an interesting book for me. Whilst I really, really like the premise of Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman, I’m not a huge fan of the execution. When I read, I want to be able to look for the deeper meanings, if I choose to do so. I don’t always read to learn a lesson. Sometimes I just like to read a story for what it is. However, I felt like this book was slapping me in the face with its well-intended message. Climate change is an issue, whether one believes it or not. . Dry is set in sunny California in the near future when the water runs out - the taps run dry. As people begin to realise the depth and seriousness of their situation (albeit far too late), the state of California descends into chaos, a warzone of desperation. Alyssa and her young brother must stick together to survive in a situation that feels like a script from the movies. Dry is scarily believable and a very possible future for us all. Our natural resources can only last so long, given our demand of them. Whilst I believe that the conversations need to be had, I feel like Dry was a little too blatant in making me feel and think a particular way. Perhaps the Shusterman’s were aiming for a shock tactic… regardless, Dry didn’t live up to my Scythe/ Thunderhead expectations which I feel bad about however I loved them SO MUCH that I guess I hoped this would reach the same levels (feeling very harsh right now… but hey, gotta be honest about these things!). Nos enseña, además, hasta dónde es capaz de llegar el ser humano frente a la desesperación y la lucha por la supervivencia. Estoy deseando ver su adaptación al cine, me va a encantar seguro. Nicht morgen. Vielleicht nie mehr." von Neal und Jarrod Shusterman aus dem Fischer Verlag. Klappentext: Niemand glaubte, dass es so weit kommen würde. Doch als Alyssa an einem heißen Junitag den Wasserhahn aufdreht, passiert nichts. Es kommt nicht ein Tropfen. Auch nicht bei den Nachbarn. In den Nachrichten heißt es nur, die Bewohner Kaliforniens sollen sich gedulden. Aber als das Problem nicht nur mehrere Stunden, sondern Tage bestehen bleibt, geduldet sich niemand mehr. Und plötzlich kommt kein Wasser man aus dem Wasserhahn. Ganz Orange County ist stillgelegt, geradezu ausgetrocknet und das Mitten im Sommer. Alyssa und ihre Eltern nehmen das Problem noch nicht so ernst, es wird nur ein paar Stunden dauern, bis alles wieder reibungslos funktioniert. Doch sie irren sich. Der Tap out ist kein kleines, sondern ein großes Problem und bald schon fehlt nicht nur das Wasser zum Duschen, sondern vor allem die Flüssigkeit zum Trinken. Aus einer kleinen Unannehmlichkeit wird ein Kampf ums Überleben, den nur die Stärksten gewinnen können. Und dabei zeigt sich auch das hässliche Gesicht der Menschen gnadenlos.

 Neal Shusterman hat zusammen mit seinem Sohn Jarrod eine hochaktuelle Dystopie für Jugendliche verfasst. Im Zentrum steht eine Gruppe Teenager, die allein ums Überleben kämpfen müssen. Das Szenario wirkt dabei nicht nur glaubwürdig, sondern in Anbetracht aktueller Entwicklungen erschreckend real, so dass der Text nicht nur durch die Bedrohung, der die Gruppe ausgesetzt ist, sondern vor allem durch das Potenzial in der Wirklichkeit einen tiefen Eindruck hinterlässt.

 Neben der Grundproblematik und dem Überlebenskampf spielt die Geschichte auch mit Fragen um Freundschaft und dem Erhalt von Idealen und Werten in einer Krisensituation. Wie weit ist der einzelne bereit zu gehen, um sein Leben vor das der anderen zu stellen? Welche Gefahr geht man ein, um Verbündete zu schützen? Die Zweckgemeinschaft um Alyssa, ihren Bruder Garret und den Nachbarn Kelton fand ich in dieser Konstellation ergänzt um Henry und Jacqui, die später hinzustoßen, überzeugend und ausreichend facettenreich, so dass für viele Leser eine Identifikationsfigur zu finden sein dürfte. Die Handlung wird durch die über ihr schwebende Bedrohung immer weiter vorangetrieben, so dass sich die Jugendlichen permanent auf der Flucht und in neuen Krisensituationen befinden. Auch das fand ich insgesamt stimmig und überzeugend.

 Abzug gibt es für einen Punkt, der mir wirklich zu schwach war: keiner der Jugendlichen bricht zusammen oder gibt auf. Selbst als die Eltern spurlos verschwinden und sie davon ausgehen müssen, dass diese tot sind, wird kaum eine Träne vergossen. Nicht nur dass mir das sehr unrealistisch vorkommt, es unterstützt auch das falsche Ideal des immer starken Menschen, der alles aushält und keine Schwäche zeigen darf. Die Bindungen zu anderen sind offenbar so schwach, dass ein Schulterzucken genügt, um deren Tod zu verarbeiten. In herausfordernden Situationen funktionieren viele Menschen sehr gut und brechen erst später zusammen, dass dies in so einem Ausmaß aber Kindern gelingen soll, erscheint mir doch eher utopisch. Nichtsdestotrotz ein insgesamt überzeugendes Jugendbuch.
