Lost in Translation (2003)

Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, this comedy-drama film stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson as fading movie star Bob Harris and recent college graduate Charlotte, respectively, who meets and develop an unlikely friendship while crossing paths in Tokyo.
The supporting cast includes: Giovanni Ribisi (aka Frank Buffay Jr. on Friends) as Charlotte’s workaholic husband, a celebrity photographer, and Anna Faris as bubbly Hollywood actress Kelly.
Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson don’t just bring something extra special to the table, but they bring something very human as well. Bill Murray, apart from his wry comedic style, is able to take his character’s exasperated tone to a more tactful approach. Scarlett Johansson is both serenely mesmerizing and remarkably mature for her young age, rising instantly from teen actress to major film star.
The script (which won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay) is written in a way that finds the perfect balance between isolation and connection. In writer/director Sofia Coppola’s case, she has a way of taking two lost American souls and placing them in a foreign city through minimal dialogue and poignant cinematography. In other words, the film literally depicts the age-old existential questions of what we ought to be doing with our lives.
In terms of observing the key aspect of the film, the two main characters experience different crises in unfamiliar territory in which language barriers and cultural divides are evident (note: this film has been called out by some critics for its egregious stereotypes of Japanese people). Further complicating matters of communication is the story taking place at a time before Facebook or FaceTime existed. Bob Harris, whose marriage seems to have reached a dead end, is having a midlife crisis while promoting a whiskey commercial. Charlotte is struggling with an identity crisis as she deals with a mundane new marriage. Faced with insomnia (in part due to jet lag), Bob and Charlotte find solace in each other’s company. Together, they grab a few drinks at the hotel lounge, spend a rollicking night out in Tokyo and even sing in a karaoke bar (during which Charlotte dons a pink Louise Brooks wig). The only difference is Bob is completely lost in translation as the title suggests, whereas Charlotte is mostly lost in trying to find her true purpose.
This particular film is entirely focused on the kindred spirit of its central characters in contrast to the typical mainstream film that provides a structured plot. What’s more, the film distinguishes intimate friendship from sexual desire (in spite of the R-rated sexual content of the movie). For instance, we get an inside look at Bob and Charlotte through a different lens than what we’re used to seeing in a romantic comedy. Not only that, but they converse openly with each other about their thoughts and concerns in a casual atmosphere of low-key emotional tension.
The soundtrack contains a few tracks that mostly revolve around shoegaze and dream pop music. The track list includes: “City Girl” by Kevin Shields (vocalist of the Irish-English rock band My Bloody Valentine), “Too Young” by Phoenix, “Sometimes” by My Bloody Valentine and “Just Like Honey” by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Bill Murray even performs a rendition of the hit Roxy Music song “More Than This”.
Lastly, the message is the idea of discovering a whole new prospect in the face of complex emotional battles via a momentary but life-changing chance encounter. That said, I recommend this spontaneous, refreshingly simplistic portrait of love and connection to everyone.

My Top 50 Favorite Movies

Lost in Translation (2003)
Have you ever asked yourself, if you were a movie what would you be? It took me years to find this answer to a question I never asked myself until I saw Sophia Coppola's Lost in Translation. This is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen. There isn't a single moment, not scene, I mean moment as in seconds that I do not appreciate. It is 2 strangers in Tokyo, Japan that are there for their own reasons that eventually form a bond, unexpected and coincidental to both of them. They are both lost in life but during different stages between identity crisis that is Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and mid-life crisis in his older years, Bob (Bill Murray). Both phases in life are completely relatable and natural. The best medicine for these two in particular is that they are away in another world, out of their current element of reality and almost in a dream like scenario in Japan that is foreign in both language and culture. Their sudden friendship brings them even closer when they attend a party thrown by a friend of Charlotte's who goes by Charlie Brown. This is where the adventure element and some comedic relief is kicked in and makes us feel like we are in Japan enjoying life at it's absolute fullest, with no thoughts or burden. The serious moments are Bob's telephone conversations with his estranged wife and Charlotte's distant gap connection with her newly wed husband, both moments are great precursors to what follows, explained above. Just like any trip, Bob and Charlotte will need to say their good-byes and this where the movie's conclusion becomes pretty sad, knowing they'll never see each other again. What I love here is that, this movie is not romantic, it's an imaginative method of meeting your perfect counterpart in a perfect setting at a perfect time - and all of it was completely unexpected making the movie that much more relatable. Lost in Translation was filmed by using film which gives a grainy stock effect for the viewer and puts pictures in motion like a collage and just so happens to be instrumental to the movie's success. Filmed in 27 days, Bill Murray's all time favorite movie is also mine and Lost In Translation is a forever mood captured on screen and sits at number 1 comfortably.

Elvis' first LP cover 📀
A LITTLE BACKGROUND STORY ABOUT THE PICTURES USED AS COVERS FOR ELVIS' FIRST LP "ELVIS PRESLEY" RELEASED ON MARCH 23, 1956. All the pictures were taken in 1955.

Known as the "Tonsil Photo", the picture of Elvis holding his 1955 Martin D-28 guitar (with custom made tooled leather cover with his name "Elvis Presley" blazoned across the front), as used on the front cover for his first RCA LP, was taken on July 31st 1955 in Tampa, Florida, according to Tampa photographer William V. "Red" Robertson, who took the picture.
Colonel Parker hired quite a few different studios and photographers to photograph Elvis in the 50s for commercial purposes. Williams Vernon "Red" Robertson was one of the professional photographers hired by Parker, in his case to photograph a show with Elvis Presley on July 31, 1955. Robertson did field work for his Robertson & Fresh commercial photography studio, a firm active in Tampa from 1932 to 1960. Roberton's business partner, Harry Fresh, processed and printed the images. You can see some other pictures from Robertson & Fresh's studio in here (digitalcommons.usf.edu archives).
The "tonsil photo" since taken was extensively used in newspaper and print to promote future shows in the 50s, and due to its use in Elvis' first LP, specially, it's one of the most famous pictures of the King of Rock and Roll.

On November 30th 1955, Elvis and the Colonel flew to New York, where they register at the Hotel Victoria on Fifty-first Street.
On Thursday, December 1st 1955, Elvis and the Colonel met RCA executives, including president Larry Kanaga and publicity director Anne Fulchino, at the RCA's Twenty-fourth Street studio in New York.
JUST SO YOU KNOW: I think there isn't photos of Elvis with RCA's president Larry Kanaga (at least I haven't found one yet) but below is a photograph from another day (in the future) of EP and Anne Fulchino, publicist for RCA Victor's Pop Record Division. Back to December 1st, 1955: A photo shoot was arranged and pictures of Elvis and the Colonel, Elvis and Steve Sholes and Elvis and fellow RCA recording artist Eddy Arnold, who happened to be in New York for a session, were taken in December 1st 1955.

After the pictures with other people, Elvis was photographed by himself... a lot (I mean it). From all the pictures, four of them (posed action shots of Elvis) were used on the back of Elvis' first album.

Wandering the hotel, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) overhears the press conference for ditzy Kelly's (Anna Faris) new action movie with Keanu Reeves.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After making a striking directorial debut with her screen adaptation of The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola offers a story of love and friendship blooming under unlikely circumstances in this comedy drama. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a well-known American actor whose career has gone into a tailspin; needing work, he takes a very large fee to appear in a commercial for Japanese whiskey to be shot in Tokyo. Feeling no small degree of culture shock in Japan, Bob spends most of his non-working hours at his hotel, where he meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) at the bar. Twentysomething Charlotte is married to John (Giovanni Ribisi), a successful photographer who is in Tokyo on an assignment, leaving her to while away her time while he works. Beyond their shared bemusement and confusion with the sights and sounds of contemporary Tokyo, Bob and Charlotte share a similar dissatisfaction with their lives; the spark has gone out of Bob's marriage, and he's become disillusioned with his career. Meanwhile, Charlotte is puzzled with how much John has changed in their two years of marriage, while she's been unable to launch a creative career of her own. Bob and Charlotte become fast friends, and as they explore Tokyo, they begin to wonder if their sudden friendship might be growing into something more.

Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola, 2003)

Lost in Translation won Sofia Coppola an Oscar for best original screenplay and a nomination for best director, along with nominations for best picture and for Bill Murray as best actor. But I have to admit that it left me cold when I first saw it, and my opinion of it has warmed only somewhat since then. I grant its originality of concept and its effective use of Murray and co-star Scarlett Johansson, who was only 18 when the film was made, a major step in her career as a film actress. Murray and Johansson have a fine chemistry together that stops short of inducing the queasiness that might result from their age difference. Coppola effectively portrays the melancholy of these Americans lost in a lively, vibrant culture they can only glimpse superficially. But I can also sympathize with the Japanese critics who found its depiction of the people of Japan to be little short of caricature. I felt this most strongly in the scene, early in the film, in which someone sends a prostitute to the hotel room of Murray's character, and she demands that he "lip" her stockings. Much supposed hilarity ensues from the stereotype of the Japanese confusion of "l" and "r," which was funny when the Monty Python troupe performed "Erizabeth L," with such characters as "Sil Wartel Lareigh," but I think it falls flat here. Otherwise, Coppola evokes the experience most of us have felt in a country where we don't speak the language. Murray plays a film star, Bob Harris, in Tokyo to shoot a Suntory whiskey commercial with a Japanese director who gives complicated instructions that are reduced by a translator to little more than "turn and look at the camera." A New York Times article after the film opened revealed what the director is actually saying, but Coppola chose not to provide subtitles, leaving the non-Japanese-speaking audience as much in the dark as Bob Harris -- and in fact Bill Murray himself -- was. Coppola also subtly suggests what her characters might be feeling, without spelling it out for us, as when Charlotte (Johansson), who has been left on her own in Japan while her photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi) travels about, visits a Buddhist temple in Kyoto where a wedding is taking place. But Coppola's lapses in control of the film's tone, as in the scene with the prostitute, are sometimes needlessly jarring.
