Silver Heart (part 4)
Oikawa can't help the smile as he yells a Welcome home to Matsukawa later that night.
"Someone had fun. Did you finally read Yours Until Dawn? I told you that one is excellent," Matsukawa says as he drops the take out on the kitchen table.
"Nope! Something even better," Oikawa says, balancing precariously on a bar stool behind the granite counter as he watches Matsukawa take down plates and cutlery.
Iwaizumi hasn't messaged him yet. But he will, Oikawa is certain of it. They eat the Chinese, Matsukawa had brought, chatting about volleyball and the good old days. It's not until Oikawa is sitting on his bed, tending to his evening rituals, when his phone finally decides to ding with an incoming message. He wipes his hands clean on a small towel and hastily reads:
Iwa-chan: It was a pleasure meeting you today. I'm free Wednesday if you'd like to go for a sled ride? There should be enough snow for it now. Best, Iwaizumi
Oikawa grins. It had been slowly snowing ever since he'd left the palace earlier and getting back with more snow on the way tomorrow. He writes a quick Yes! and leans back into his cushions.
Wednesday arrives with a crisp winter sun and a bit after noon Oikawa walks across the frozen path with Iwaizumi at his elbow. He's dressed in a dark parka and looks way too good in the teal checkered scarf. The sled isn't far and Iwaizumi holds out his hand to help Oikawa up, the epitome of chivalry. They fill the air with talk, Iwaizumi about the history of the town and how beautiful it is in the summer when all the flowers bloom, Oikawa about his life and the team. There's a basket of sandwiches and mulled wine by their feet, keeping them warm with a small inkling of a buzz as the afternoon wears thin.
"I'd love to see you again," Iwaizumi says as they say goodbye.
Oikawa can feel the words tug . "I could be persuaded to see you again, I suppose," he says.
"Good. I'll message you later." And with those parting words Iwaizumi turns and makes his way back.
Oikawa watches him go, then turns, steps lighter than they have been in a long while.
Iwaizumi picks him up that Friday night. They drive to the city, Oikawa talking about the latest awful romance novel he'd been forced to read. They end up in a small restaurant, dark and private. The menu already picked out with small plates and dishes of a way higher quality than Oikawa is used to. He jokes about taking Iwaizumi to his favorite place in Tokyo, meat buns to die for. Iwaizumi nods and lets him talk, the food quickly disappearing off their plates.
When it is time to leave, Oikawa asks for the bill, but to his surprise the waitress just smiles and says it's already been taken care of. Oikawa follows her gaze to Iwaizumi and then back to her as she bows her head and disappears.
"You'll have to let me pay for one of these treats someday," Oikawa says as Iwaizumi starts the car,
"You're a guest," he says as he turns his head to reverse. He catches Oikawa's eye as he continues. "And it was my pleasure to do so."
Oikawa is glad for the darkness hiding the blush spreading across his cheeks. He knows this is just fun, but it certainly feels like a date when the other man says things like that, doesn't it?
Iwaizumi walks him to the door and lingers.
"I was hoping you would be free on the next Friday. It's the Winter Solstice ball and it--if you would like to go--" the smooth line turns into something not quite as smooth, but Oikawa can feel the delighted grin spread across his cheeks.
"I'd love to!" he says. "The one up at the palace? Is that allowed?"
"I have my connections," Iwaizumi says and his usual stoic expression melts into a small smile. He clears his throat and looks away. "Then I just want to wish you a good night."
Oikawa stops him with a hand on his arm. "Thank you for inviting me. And this past week."
The other man turns, an unreadable expression in his eyes before, "I--it was my pleasure," Iwaizumi says again and with a small bow of his head he descends the steps and walks back towards his car. Oikawa watches him go for a good few seconds before turning and unlocking the door.
The weekend rolls around again and Matsukawa is free to entertain. It's not like Oikawa isn't messaging Iwaizumi when the two of them go on an impromptu excursion to the capital, museums and a play on the itenary. Maybe a bit too much when Matsukawa goes and comments about it at dinner the first night.
"So, who is it you keep on messaging constantly? Your whole face lights up when you pick up your phone." There's a teasing under current to the words, but Matsukawa's smile is genuine. Oikawa knows his friend's been worried about him, not just Matsukawa, Hanamaki too in his own way.
"Just a local who's been showing me around," Oikawa replies and pockets his phone.
"Cute?" Matsukawa asks and pours more wine.
"Definitely." Oikawa nods. "Tall, dark and handsome. You know."
Matsukawa nods. "Yeah, I know your type."
"It's not like I have a type, per say." Oikawa tries but the look Matsukawa gives him let's him know his friend isn't buying it. "Okay, I might have a type but still. He's nothing like Tobio and it's not like it's anything serious anyway."
And the topic gets dropped as the first course comes. It's not quite as good as the hidden restaurant Iwaizumi took him to, but it does fill the stomach.
Oikawa sleeps off a hangover that Monday. He's surprised to see Matsukawa gone when he finally manages to get down for breakfast. There's a note on the table, but he ignores it for a glass of orange juice from the fridge.
He sprawls on the couch just as the door opens with a blast of cold.
Oikawa leans up just enough to see snow and Matsukawa.
"Holy shit, it's snowing," Matsukawa says as way of greeting.
Oikawa watches him take off his snow encrusted boots. "No work today?"
Matsukawa looks up, one boot in hand, the other still on his foot. "You didn't read my note? Blizzard coming in so can't take the risk. Went to buy some more gas for the generator in case we get snowed in and the power goes."
"That's a thing that can happen?" Oikawa sits up, suddenly wide awake.
"Welcome to the mountains, my friend."
Oikawa goes to turn on the tv and flipping through channels until he gets the news. Matsukawa glances back and comes to stand behind the sofa. "You know, you can just check online. We still have internet."
"I know--just," Oikawa is cut off as a very familiar face pops on screen. "Holy shit."
If he wasn't sitting down he would have fallen.
"Oh, look at that the prince," Matsukawa says, casually. Way too casually.
"Prince?" Oikawa tries, the word coming out a bit too shocked.
"Yeah, he's the crown prince of our fine land here." Matsukawa is about to turn when the news reporter says. "And today we found out that the Royal Book has a new added line! This hasn't happened since the Queen Mother met her husband almost seventy years ago."
"Holy shit. Everyone's gonna go nuts when they find out," Matsukawa comments as Oikawa just frowns as Iwaizumi's face changes to a book in a gilded glass case.
"The prince?" Oikawa tries again, but then the news reported says. "The words written were. And I quote: Unhand me you brute. I don't know what Prine Hajime has been doing, but it seems he's finally found his queen."
"Queen?" Oikawa repeats and swallows as the news move on to other topics.
"Yeah," Matsukawa says and circles the couch to sit next to Oikawa's frozen body. "They have this superstition here about the magic book." He air quotes the last bit. "So basically the first thing you say to your supposed soulmate or future spouse is written into the book which proves that you are destined to be together."
The way Matsukawa speaks makes it clear he doesn't believe a word of it, but Oikawa. Oikawa is having an internal panic attack.

So I finished Fionna and Cake and I've just been trying to unscramble my thoughts about the theme of Love in this 10 ep series because it's very interesting. It could be better, but what can you do with 10 eps. For what was given, it wasn't that bad. Under the cut will be rambles and vague spoilers so like read it at your own risk, it's a lot.
Anyway, Love in some of it's forms (platonic and romantic) - can be a fortune as much as it is a tragedy. Love can be a blessing or a curse. It can spiral you into madness, into sadness, into a cycle of always finding your soul mate in every universe, etc. Of course the main duo is Simon and Betty - where love becomes an obsession. Betty endured all of Simon's obliviousness, all of his decisions, all of his choices because to her, he was the best experience she could have. Love changed her and she let it. Love made her sacrifice everything and she was more than willing, regardless of if it was what Simon wanted. But with Simon, Betty was his everything and her sacrifice meant losing himself too and falling into madness and sadness because even as Ice King he was powerless to get her back. And based on every universe he went through, he was never meant to get her back which sure can drive a man further into depression when he feels like his only purpose is to get the love of his life back. Everything Betty did was for Simon and he realized that despite them both being equally obsessed, they were never on equal footing. What do you do when you love someone so much but in every reality your love ends in tragedy? You learn that you can't make one person your whole world. Loving one person can't be your everything but it can be a wonderful experience that you hold in your heart and your memory. Love is letting go so you can heal.
And then of course there's the smaller plot of Bonnie/Marcy + Gary/Marshall - They're two sides of the same coin where (queer) obsession can lead to destruction and (queer) love being the guiding light away from the abuse they started from. What is love if not taking a loved one away from their abusive home and telling them that you would love them despite it all, no matter what form they took and who they became. What is love if not mutually assured destruction, deciding that if the world will end, they will die together because they refuse to let the other die by anyone else's hand. If you are fated to find each other in every universe, wouldn't you want to make the best of it (whether that's toxic or not)?
But then there's the smaller moments that aren't highlighted as much - Fionna and Cake's relationship and how much they love each other. Multiple times Cake was willing to risk it all to save Fionna or keep them moving forward and every time Fionna would reprimand or stop her - not because the ideas were bad (more or less) but because Fionna didn't want to lose her best friend. Yes Fionna had been depressed for majority of the series (especially after the Winter King ep) but it's not until Cake lashes out does she actually just start bawling. There's so much loss and having the one constant at your side can have one mistaking love for control and not the desperation it really was for Fionna.
ANYWAY there are a lot of interesting moments in this series that I do wish were fleshed out more but again, what can you do about it. I've also typed myself in a circle and don't know if this makes sense but that doesn't matter. I know the vibe I'm getting at.
