Her title of Yalodde (iyalode) is the highest honor that may be conferred upon a woman in those lands. It means “mother of nations.” Oshnn is the symbol of river waters, without which life in the earth would be impossible. In the same manner, she controls all that makes life worth living, such as love and marriage, children, money, and pleasure. In Santeria she is syncretized with Our Lady of La Caridad del Cobre, the patron of Cuba. The main reason for the syncretization is that in Nigeria, copper (cobre in Spanish) was the most precious metal in ancient times. Oshun is said to have been passionately fond of copper jewelry, and part of her ashe is deposited on this metal. Now that copper is no longer a valuable metal, her tastes have changed and now she is partial to gold, which is one of her attributes.
